Not helping Ukraine 'target' Russian generals: Pentagon

<p>Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia's invasion of his country has destroyed hundreds of hospitals and other medical institutions, leaving doctors without cancer medications or the ability to do surgery.</p>

<p>Many locations in eastern and southern Ukraine, where the main battlegrounds are, lack even basic antibiotics, according to Zelensky.</p>

<p>"If you consider just medical infrastructure, as of today Russian troops have destroyed or damaged nearly 400 healthcare institutions: hospitals, maternity wards, outpatient clinics," Zelenskiy said in a video address to a medical charity group on Thursday.</p>

<p>He described the condition in Russian-occupied areas as "catastrophic."</p>

Russian troops fight for control of last Ukrainian stronghold in Mariupol

<p>United Nations and Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday (May 4) that Russian soldiers were allegedly raping men and boys in Ukraine.</p>

<p>“I have received reports, not yet verified… about sexual violence cases against men and boys in Ukraine.” said Pramila Patten, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict.</p>

<p>She underlined challenges male survivors of rape would face in reporting the crime. She said that while it was hard for women to report sexual violence due to the social stigma, it may be even harder for men to admit and openly report that they had been sexually assaulted.</p>

<p>Reporters Without Borders, often known by its French acronym RSF said in a report that unregulated online content has helped spread disinformation and propaganda that have in turn led to widening of political divisions and even caused international tension contributing to Russian invasion of Ukraine.</p>

<p>The media watchdog presented its findings in the 2022 edition of its annual World Press Freedom Index</p>

<p>The report said that democratic societies are increasingly being fractured by disinformation spreading social media while mainstream media pursues a "Fox News model". This is a reference to US right-wing television network.</p>

<p>The report noted that autocratic regimes were tightening control on information within their societies. This leverage, is in turn used to wage "propaganda wars" against democracies and fuel divisions within them.</p>

<p>Such polarisation is becoming more "extreme," worldwide, RSF's director of operations and campaigns Rebecca Vincent told a news conference in London.</p>

<p>Vincent pointed to deaths of journalists in Netherlands, Greece and also mentioned case of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange who is facing an extradition and trial in US for publication of millions of secret documents.</p>

<p>The report showed how Russia, where state-run media overwhelmingly dominates and independent outlets are largely stifled, waged a propaganda war before its invasion of Ukraine.</p>

<p>Evgeniya Dillendorf, a correspondent for the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper, said the main reason for lack of media diversity in Russia "is not pressure but lack of independent business which would finance it, and the lack of independent judicial system that would defend it".</p>

<p>Novaya Gazeta has suspended publication for the duration of Moscow's military intervention to avoid being shut down.</p>

<p>"The creation of media weaponry in authoritarian countries eliminates their citizens' right to information but is also linked to the rise in international tension, which can lead to the worst kind of wars," RSF Secretary-General Christophe Deloire said.</p>

<p>The "Fox News-isation" of Western media also posed a "fatal danger for democracies because it undermines the basis of civil harmony and tolerant public debate", he added.</p>

'Ghost of Kyiv' killed in fighting, has shot down 40 Russian jets

<p>Ukraine's foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba on Sunday (May 1) asked China to provide security guarantees against Russia.</p>

<p>In a lengthy interview, he told Xinhua news agency that "Ukraine is currently studying the possibility of acquiring security guarantees from permanent members of the UN Security Council, including China, and other major powers."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We propose that China becomes one of the guarantors of Ukraine's security, this is a sign of our respect and trust in the People's Republic of China," Kuleba was quoted as saying by Chinese state media.</p>

Russian reconnaissance plane violates Sweden's airspace

<p>A Pentagon official said on Friday that Russian campaign to seize Donbas in Eastern Ukraine was behind schedule and was moving slowly. The official, quoted by Reuters, said that stiff resistance from Ukrainian soldiers and Russia's failure to capture Kyiv resulted in "slow and uneven progress" in Donbas.</p>

<p>"We believe that essentially what they're doing is continuing to set conditions for a sustained and larger and longer offensive," the official said.</p>

<p>The official said that this included a "doctrinal" approach of launching airstrikes and then artillery strikes at Ukraine positions, and only then attempting to move forward on the ground.</p>

<p>However, such strikes have not been as successful as Russians had hoped, according to the official. And this in turn has led to slow progress on ground.</p>

<p>In addition, "they're still a little wary of getting out ahead of their supply lines. They don't want to make the same mistakes that they've made in Kyiv," the official said.</p>

<p>Consequently, the official said, "We do believe in the sense that they're behind schedule and what they were trying to accomplish in the Donbas."</p>

<p>Thousands of people have been killed or injured as a result of Russia's two-month invasion of Ukraine, which has turned towns and cities to rubble and driven more than 5 million people to escape abroad.</p>

Ukraine war: Russia shouldn't get away cost-free: US military chief Mark Milley

<p>The World Bank has warned that price shocks in food and fuel prices due to Russian invasion of Ukraine will be felt at least till the end of year 2024. This, said that bank, raises the risk of stagflation. The World Bank has expressed its observation in its latest Commodities Market Outlook report.</p>

<p>The report is World Bank's first comprehensive analysis of the war's impact on commodity market. The bank has said that the world is facing biggest commodity price shock since the 1970s.</p>

<p>It is being aggravated, it said, by restrictions in food, fuel and fertiliser trade that are exacerbating already elevated inflationary pressures around the world.</p>

<p>"Policymakers should take every opportunity to increase economic growth at home and avoid actions that bring harm to the global economy," said Indermit Gill, the World Bank’s Vice President for Equitable Growth, Finance, and Institutions.</p>

<p>Russia is the world's largest natural gas and fertiliser exporter, and second largest crude oil exporter. Together with Ukraine, it accounts for nearly a third of global wheat exports, 19% of corn exports and 80% of exports of sunflower oil exports.</p>

<p>There has been a disruption in export and production of natural gas, fertilisers, crude oil and other commodities since Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24 this year.</p>

<p>The bank said commodity prices will only retreat slightly and stay well above the most recent five-year average for the medium term.</p>

<p>"In the event of a prolonged war, or additional (Western) sanctions on Russia, prices could be even higher and more volatile than currently projected," it said.</p>

<p>An image of children huddled inside a bunker stared at me this morning. All around ten years, approximately my age, hiding in Ukraine to save from their enemy, Russia. Why are Russia and Ukraine enemies? I asked and googled. I gathered, Russia claims a part of Ukraine as theirs and wants the country to surrender. But, if they believe that a part of the country belongs to them then why are they bombing themselves?</p>

<p>The children in the image wore Covid-19 masks, sadness visible in their eyes. Evident, that they were separated from their families. When would they get together again? Would everyone be alive? Their houses would remain? The children looked pale and scared. I felt, they were waiting to be free and hug their loved ones.</p>

<p>Did I see in their eyes, the fear of getting orphaned? I remember reading Oliver Twist, an orphan who was ill-treated and abused, living in constant fear of doing something unapproved and getting beaten up. Oliver had escaped. Would there be an Oliver in these children?&nbsp;</p>

<p>Was the bunker hygenic? Did they get their food? If any of them would get high fever, would a doctor attend? How long would it take for them to get back to school – I wondered sitting inside my classroom that had just opened after the long COVID situation. Would their schools still be there? Or would they be destroyed! I pray for them, hoping they’d return to their comfort and safety soon.</p>

<p>I spoke to my parents about wars. They are as clueless as I am.</p>

<p>The other day I saw a clip of people fleeing from Afghanistan. They climbed on either side of the airplane and even on top, legs dangling out of the door, desperate to run from their own country, to be able to live a life of their choice. How would they resettle, where would they find dignity,are amongmany unanswered questions of mine. I started reading about wars. I wish I didn’t. War is all about blood and death, disability and trauma. The India-Pakistan disputes have led to many wars in the past. We were once the same country, now separated. The relationships between countries are not as simple as mine with my best friend. We disagree and eventually one of us lets go. We choose to be friends because that makes us happy. Why don’t countries want to be happy?</p>

<p>People kill each other in a war. Many soldiers return disabled, some never return.</p>

<p>But still, wars happen.Countries become enemies.Two beautiful geographies that can offer tourism to each other, where people come to learn and experience art, choose the path of destruction instead.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I remember reading books with stories of wars. 'The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank' introduced me to the fears and loneliness of a thirteen-year-old during World War II when the Germans were killing the Jews. The Franks were hiding in a secret annex above the father’s office, sharing space with another family, cut off from the world outside.After two years of hiding, they were betrayed and the family was arrested. Anne Frank’s diary ended abruptly; so did her life. The children in the bunker reminds me of Anne Frank. I feel uncomfortable.</p>

<p>Another book,' Wonder' by R. J. Palacio briefly touches upon a grandmother’s childhood when Germans came to France and Jews were fleeing. A young boy with deformed legs sarcastically called Tourteau, helped her to escape when Jew children – crying, pleading, frightened – were being taken hostage. She kept in hiding for two years and never saw her mother again. For how long would the children in Ukraine have to stay inside the bunker?&nbsp;<br />
<br />
John Boyne’s 'The Boy in Striped Pyjamas' showed the life of the prisoners living in severe conditions – under-fed, overworked and subjected to extreme cruelty. This book, I don’t want to think about.</p>

<p>In my school, we don’t talk about the war. I hear about it at home. On my mother’s WhatsApp, I find people sending jokes and memes about war. They must not have read these books or seen the images. I heard from my father about the news correspondents reporting from the war front, going out and taking cover at regular intervals, telling the world what is happening there. I hope and I pray that their work ends at the earliest. I also wait for them to declare that the bunker is empty now and the children have been sent back home.</p>
