Rishabh Pant becomes first Indian wicket-keeper to slam century in Australia

Cheteshwar Pujara ground out a masterful 193 and Rishabh Pant smashed a magnificent unbeaten 159 as Australia's hopes of winning the match and saving the series were washed away by a torrent of Indian runs on day two of the fourth test on Friday.

Virat Kohli declared on 622 for seven an hour before the close of play when Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for 81 and Usman Khawaja (5) and Marcus Harris (19) ushered Australia to stumps on 24 without loss.

Pujara came up seven runs short of his fourth double century but there can be little doubt that his nine-hour, 373-ball knock will almost certainly deliver India's first test series victory in Australia.

After a beautifully crafted innings, Pujara went with a whimper rather than a bang before tea, scooping the ball back down the wicket to be caught and bowled by wily off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The 30-year-old's centuries in Adelaide and Melbourne went a long way to giving India a 2-1 series lead and there was relief as well as admiration in the standing ovation he received from the crowd when he finally headed back to the Member's Stand.

Once he had departed, Pant and Jadeja initially maintained his circumspection before throwing off the shackles and hammering home India's advantage with a partnership of 204.

Pant had a bit of a scare six runs short of his second test century when he was close to being run out but made his ground safely and reached the milestone off 137 balls with his eighth four - the first Indian wicketkeeper to do so in Australia.

Jadeja was soon twirling his bat in his trademark celebration of a half century, his 10th in tests, and for while it looked like Pant would overhaul Pujara with a maiden double century.

Australia's much vaunted pace attack were exhausted after two days' toiling for little reward in the Sydney heat and the wicket that finally precipitated the declaration came again from Lyon (4-178).

Jadeja stepped down the wicket to try and dominate the spinner but was deceived by the flight of the ball and bowled to end a 114-ball innings featuring seven fours and a six.

The hosts had started the day with hopes of making major inroads into India's batting order but were largely frustrated, even if Lyon removed Hanuma Vihari for 42 to break the 101-partnership with Pujara.

Pujara's almost chanceless innings -- he was dropped in the slips on 192 -- featured 22 fours and took his tally over the series to 521 runs at an average of 74.42.

Pant, whose innings featured 15 boundaries and one six, blotted his copy book in the final hour by dropping Khawaja behind the wickets but nothing was going to mar another dominant day for the tourists.

India vs Australia, 4th Test, Day 2: Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant put India in command of Sydney Test

The banter between Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and Australian skipper Tim Paine during the Boxing Day Test made several headlines.

However, the fans found the cheeky comments between the two to be interesting and laughable. In one such banter, Tim asked Pant if he is available to babysit his kids when he takes his wife out for a movie.

Pant didn’t sit back and gave it back to the Aussie skipper when he came to bat in the fourth innings and called him a ‘temporary captain’. Pant said, “We’ve got a special guest today…..have you heard of a temporary captain ever? You don’t need anything to get him out boys. He loves to talk, that’s the only thing he can do, only talking talking.”

But guess what, days later the incident, Paine's wife uploaded a picture on her Instagram where Pant can be seen holding one of her kids.

Bonnie Paine, Tim's wife, even called Pant as the 'best babysitter'.

Meanwhile, the fourth and final Test of the series will kick off on January 3 at Sydney Cricket Ground. India are leading the series 2-1 and will try to create history by winning a series on Australian soil.

India will be without the services of Rohit Sharma in this Test, who has flown back to India to be with his wife and new-born daughter. He is expected to be replaced by R Ashwin in the squad, keeping the pitch in mind.

If Ashwin is unfit for the match, then Kuldeep Yadav might be looked at for a place in the playing XI.

Australian skipper Tim Paine is gathering all kinds of attention in the ongoing India-Australia Test series apart from his wicketkeeping skills. On the third day of the Melbourne Test, Paine sledged Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and the conversation was recorded on the stumps mic.

When Pant was batting, Paine said, "Now that big MS back in the ODI squad, maybe he could play for the Hobart Hurricanes, this bloke [Pant]. We need a batter. Fancy that Panty, extend your little Aussie holiday? Beautiful town Hobart too. We'll get you a nice apartment on the waterfront, have you over for dinner."

He further added, "Do you babysit? I can take my wife to the movies while you watch the kids."

Pant and Mayank Agarwal not out as India built a 346 run lead as Australia were bowled out for 151 in their first innings, in reply to the tourists 443-7 declared.

Rishabh Pant 'happy' to help India win with world record 11 catches

Travis Head matched his highest Test score but missed out on a century as Australia moved to within 15 runs of India after the first innings, leaving the opening Test in Adelaide on a knife-edge Saturday.

Batting on his home ground, Head made 72 before nicking a Mohammed Shami delivery to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant after adding 11 to his overnight 61.

It signalled a quick end to the Australian innings, with the last wicket rapidly following and lunch called as rain came down before India's batsmen could get to the crease.

Australia made 235, in reply to India's 250. They started the day at 191-7.

After two days of stifling hot conditions, a change rolled in Saturday and play began 45 minutes late in gloomy conditions, with the ground's lights on.

It only lasted 3.4 overs before the drizzle began again and the umpires called the players off after Mitchell Starc was caught behind by Pant, getting a thin edge to a Jasprit Bumrah delivery.

He added seven runs to his overnight eight.

Play resumed after an hour with Nathan Lyon accompanying Head, who looked on track to better his previous best Test score against Pakistan in October.

But he was enticed into prodding at a Shami ball and was out to deny him the chance of a maiden ton in his third Test.

Josh Hazlewood came to the crease but was gone first ball, again to the Shami-Pant combination, leaving Nathan Lyon unbeaten after a quick-fire 24, including a six.

For India, Ravichandran Ashwin finished with 3-57 and Jasprit Bumrah had 3-47.

INDvsAUS, 1st Test, Day 3: Match on knife-edge with Australia 15 runs behind India

Australia's pacemen hit back with two late wickets after India's batsmen started positively to push Virat Kohli's team to 101-run lead at tea on day three of the first test on Saturday.

Josh Hazlewood had Lokesh Rahul caught behind for 44 after pace spearhead Starc dismissed Murali Vijay for 18 to end a 63-run opening stand at Adelaide Oval, after the home side were bowled out for 235 in the rain-hit first session.

Number three Cheteshwar Pujara was 11 not out, with captain Kohli on two, and an intriguing test match delicately poised under a cloudy sky.

Protecting India's first innings total of 250, Kohli's bowlers did well to carve out an initial 15-run lead, getting through Australia's final three wickets for the cost of 44 runs after the home side resumed on 191 for seven following a rain-delayed start.

India seamer Mohammed Shami was on a hat-trick after claiming the final two wickets of batsman Travis Head (72) and number 11 Josh Hazlewood (0) in successive balls.

Dismissed for two in the first innings to extend a lean run of scores, Rahul came out with positive intent and saw off Starc and Hazlewood's opening spell before taking to Pat Cummins.

He smashed a drive for six over deep cover off Australia's first-change bowler and another square drive for four in the same over.

The recalled Vijay was never quite so settled, however, and he was out for 18 chasing a wider delivery that was caught by Peter Handscomb at second slip.

Pujara, who scored a sparkling 123 to rescue India in their first innings total of 250, was given out after an appeal for caught behind off Lyon but over-turned the decision on review.

Australia's disappointment was short-lived, however, as Rahul threw away his wicket moments later with an ill-advised swipe at a Hazlewood which served only to send a nick flying through to wicketkeeper-captain Tim Paine.

Australia's pacemen hit back with two late wickets after India's batsmen started positively to push Virat Kohli's team to 101-run lead at tea on day three of the first test on Saturday.

1000 Test runs for @imVkohli in Australia. INDvsAUS, 1st Test, Day 3: India at 146-2 after 55 overs, lead by 161 runs

India captain Virat Kohli on Thursday reiterated that Mahendra Singh Dhoni remains an integral part of the ODI team and the veteran wicket-keeper batsman decided not to play the upcoming T20s only to make way for the much younger Rishabh Pant.

"I think the selectors have already addressed this if I'm not wrong. And he's been spoken to, firstly... So, I don't see any reason why I should be sitting here and explaining that. I think the selectors have come out and explained exactly what happened," said Kohli at the post-match press conference after guiding India to another series win at home.

"I was not part of that conversation so... It is what the selectors explained. I think people are putting too much variables into the situation, which is not the case I can assure you of that. He's still a very integral part of this team and he just feels that in the T20 format, someone like Rishabh can get more chances."

Dhoni has been dropped for the upcoming T20 series against the West Indies and Australia and there is a possibility that he never plays for India again in the shortest format.

"He anyway plays the ODIs for us regularly, so... From that point of view, he's only trying to help the youngsters; nothing that anything that other people are thinking and I as captain can certainly assure you of that," Kohli said.

On the positives from the West Indies series, which India won 3-1, Kohli said he was happy with the way Ambati Rayudu had played at No.4 and the manner in which young Khaleel Ahmed bowled.

The West Indies were hit by injury to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich early in the Indian innings, and replaced him with substitute Jahmar Hamilton behind the stumps.

WI vs Ind, 2nd Test, Day 2: Pant, Rahane give India control as India 308-4 at stumps

Dashing keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant forced his way into the Indian ODI set-up for the first time as the national selection committee got down to put in place a succession plan for the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Pant, who had scored 114 and 92 in his previous two Test appearances, has been a prolific white ball player who replaced the inconsistent Dinesh Karthik as Dhoni's cover.

The southpaw is expected to be one of the missing links in the Indian ODI team's middle order jigsaw puzzle.

Asked if Pant will be playing purely as a batsman, chairman of selectors MSK Prasad said: "Yes, definitely but if need arises he will be the backup keeper."

While Dhoni remains the first-choice keeper till the World Cup, Prasad indicated that young Pant is a long-term investment.

"It is no brainer who is our No 1 wicketkeeper. In search of the second wicketkeeper, we have given opportunities to DK and right now we are giving an opportunity to Rishabh Pant. At an appropriate time, we will take a call as to who is the best among the two."

Prasad indicated that they have now zeroed in on a couple of names for the two middle-order slots.

Another interesting inclusion was of Mohammed Shami, who last played an ODI in September last year. He will be looked at as a potential third seamer option.

"I have been telling this for a quite some time that we are just 18 ODIs away from now before we play the first game of the World Cup and so we need to figure out our fast bowlers and in this process, we have picked Shami," said Prasad.

It is learnt that skipper Virat Kohli, who was rested for the Asia Cup, returns to play all five ODIs while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah are set to come back during the second phase of the series.

The chairman of selectors also said that Dhoni will take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy knock-out phase, representing Jharkhand.

"He (Dhoni) will play the knock-outs. About Ambati Rayudu, I need to confirm."

He also gave a couple of injury updates with Hardik Pandya unavailable till the second week of November as he is suffering from an acute lower back injury.

About his future in red-ball cricket, Prasad said: "Well, it is a workload management program going on and it all depends on his recovery from the injury he has now. At an appropriate time, we can answer as and when he recovers from injury."

On Kedar Jadhav, it was learnt that he will be available for the last three ODIs as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Prasad also in his own way rubbished multiple captaincy theory which was doing the rounds since India's Asia Cup triumph under Rohit Sharma's leadership.

"Well, I would like to tell in 2015, Virat took over Test captaincy and subsequently in 2017, he took over ODI captaincy. He has excelled in all formats, led from the front and India are No 1 side in all formats (only in Tests).

We want all 15 players to think as leaders and we will be an unbeatable team. Rohit and Ajinkya (Rahane) has done well in that aspect but we want others to think like leaders and rise to the occasion," Prasad added.

Indian captain Virat Kohli, who is batting on 120, slammed his 24th Test ton on day two of the first Test against West Indies in Rajkot on Friday. He became the quickest batsman to reach 24 Test centuries after the great Donald Bradman.

Virat found a determined ally in 21-year-old Rishabh Pant, who missed out on century after a blistering 92-run knock, to put together 133 runs for the fifth wicket.

Despite Kohli's spectacle, the highlight of the session was Rishabh Pant who resumed at 17, went all guns blazing. His entertaining innings was laced with eight fours and four sixes.

Eying his second Test hundred in his fourth Test Pant attempted another six over mid-wicket, failed to pick the googly and top-edged it for a simple catch to Keemo Paul at backward point.

Ind vs WI, 1st Test, Day 2: Virat and Pant shine as India were 506-5 at lunch

Defending Champions Mumbai lost the last chance to book a play-off berth in the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League as they have been kicked out of the tournament by Delhi team at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium on Sunday.

Earlier, the host Delhi had won the toss and opted to bat in order to take the advantage of a dry pitch and put up a 175-run target for Mumbai.

While chasing, team Mumbai lost all the wickets in 19.3 overs and failed to reach the target eventually losing the match by 11 runs.

The opener Evin Lewis scored 48 runs to give a required start to the team but another opener Suryakumar Yadav did not contribute much as he scored just 12 runs before losing his wicket to star spinner Sandeep Lamichhane.

Ishan Kishan and Keiron Pollard too were ineffective in today's game as they scored just five and seven runs respectively.

Rohit Sharma, who suffered an injury in the first inning while fielding, scored just 13 runs off 11 balls. Also, allrounder Krunal Pandya scored just four runs.

Hardik Pandya and Ben Cutting tried to push the run rate but that was not enough to take the team through to the play-offs.

Hardik Pandya scored 27 runs before losing the wicket to Amit Mishra on the other hand bowler Harshal Patel outbowled Ben Cutting at the score of 37 runs. Ben's short inning included two 4's and three 6's. In the death overs, Mayank Markande (3) and Jasprit Bumrah (0) lost their wickets.

For Delhi, spinners were very economical as Sandeep Lamichhane and Amit Mishra took three wickets each to restrict the defending champions. Also, pacer Harshal Patel made a very crucial contribution in his 2.3-over spell by taking three wickets by giving 28 runs.

For a magnificent spell, Amit Mishra was awarded 'Player of the Match.'

Earlier, after losing first three wickets, Delhi's Rishab Pant rose to the occasion to help its team set a decent score of 174 runs on board.

The wicket-keeper batsman slammed 64 runs in 44 balls which included four boundaries and four huge sixes.

It is Pant's fifth half-century in this year's tournament.

Supporting him at the other end was Vijay Shankar, who smashed 43 runs in 30 balls. His unbeaten inning included three fours and two sixes.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer and opener Prithvi Shaw once again failed to contribute any big score and departed after making six and 12 runs, respectively.

While chasing, team Mumbai lost all the wickets in 19.3 overs and failed to reach the target and lost the match by 11 runs

Speaking after the toss, Iyer said,"Going to have a bat. No grass on the wicket, seems dry, so we will look to put a big score on the board. We have been batting first in the last few games as well so we are confident of putting up a good score."

"With regards to preparation and practice we have been spot-on and we will play this game like this is our last game and put everything into it. Liam Plunkett comes in place of Avesh Khan," he added.

Talking about their strategy for today, Rohit Sharma said," Nothing changes for us, we need to restrict them to as little as possible. We are aware of these conditions, so we just have to play good cricket for 40 overs now that we know that we are bowling first and we need to restrict them to as little as possible."

IPL 2018: Virat Kohli opts to bowl against Delhi

Virat Kohli-led Bangalore will take on the already-eliminated Delhi team at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium on Saturday.

On one side, Bangalore can't afford to suffer the loss in tonight's game but Delhi have got nothing to lose and they can definitely spoil Virat's plans.

Bangalore have won just three wins from 10 games, have to win their remaining four games to have any chance of making the play-offs and given their ordinary run so far in the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League, Bangalore doesn't evoke much hope even playing against a team which has already been eliminated.

Although, team Delhi is not in the play-off race but still they have improved their performance in the previous few games. In Delhi's previous encounter against Hyderabad, Rishabh Pant played a splendid inning and scored unbeaten 128 runs with a 200+ strike rate, he is also the orange cap holder at the moment.

Skipper Virat Kohli is the team's leading run-scorer with 396 runs at 49.50 but the team has failed miserably as they were unable to chase down a modest total of 147 runs.

The Bangalore have done alright with the ball and they would be hoping to maintain that at the high-scoring Kotla.

Pacers Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Siraj have impressed in the different occasions.

It will be interesting to see how both teams will set the playing XI and there are chances that Shreyas Iyer might include Nepal's spinner Sandeep Lamichhane and South African pacer Junior Dala.

On the other hand, Virat Kolhi's side is quite balanced they just need to focus on collaborative efforts and teamwork.

Playing XI (TBC):

Delhi: Prithvi Shaw, Jason Roy, Shreyas Iyer (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Vijay Shankar, Liam Plunkett, Amit Mishra, Harshal Patel, Trent Boult, Shahbaz Nadeem

IPL 2018: Match preview of Delhi vs Bangalore

Rajasthan celebrated their return to the 'fortress' with a 10-run win over Delhi in the rain-hit Indian Premier League contest here tonight.

Rajasthan overcame a shaky start and were on course to post a competitive total before heavy rain lashed the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, leaving them at 153 for five in 17.5 overs.

Intermittent rain led to a two and a half hour stoppage before umpires gave their go ahead for a shortened game. Rajasthan's innings eventually ended at 153 for five and Delhi were set a revised target of 71 runs in six overs as per Duckworth-Lewis method.

The visitors made a disastrous start with Colin Munro run out off the first ball of the innings following a mix-up with Glenn Maxwell (17 off 12).

Rajasthan's attack comprising pacers Ben Laughlin and Dhawal Kulkarni bowled well and kept the Daredevils batsmen guessing with their variations. Only two overs of Powerplay also hurt Delhi.

With Rishabh Pant (20 off 14) gone in the penultimate over, Rajasthan needed to defend 25 runs in the final over. Laughlin (2/20) did that pretty comfortably as Rajasthan recorded their first win of the season. It was a second straight loss for Delhi.

Earlier, captain Ajinkya Rahane (45 off 40) and Sanju Samson (37 off 22) staged the Royals' recovery before Jos Buttler (29 off 18) and Rahul Tripathi (15 off 11) provided entertainment towards the end.

Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem (2/34) made a significant impact in his first game of the season, taking two crucial wickets.

Rajasthan, playing their first home game at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in five years, were off to a wobbly start.

Big Bash star D'Arcy Short (6) was run out for the second game in a row after a mix up with Rahane over the second run.

The hosts were dealt another blow in the fifth when their costliest buy Ben Stokes (16) was dismissed by Trent Boult with a beauty that moved away to just enough to take the outside edge.

There was not much that Stokes could do about that ball but he looked ominous in his brief knock that comprised a crisp hit off Chris Morris over square leg.

Rahane and the talented Sanju Samson then got together to revive the innings.

Samson, just like in the team's opener against Sunrisers, showed sublime form. He smashed Boult for a four and six over square leg to get going. Especially, the front foot pull off the New Zealand pacer for a maximum was a treat to the eye.

The two Indian batsmen shared a 62-run stand for the third wicket, taking the team to 84 for two in 10 overs.

However, Nadeem found the stumps of Samson in the following over before removing Rahane in the 14th over, making it 112 for four.

The quick dismissals got England wicket-keeper batsman Buttler and Rahul Tripathi together and they both attacked the Daredevils from the word go.

Buttler hammered two fours and as many sixes in his entertaining knock before being bowled off a slower-ball from Shami.

The 17th over bowled by Morris leaked 18 runs, turning out to be the most expensive over of the innings.&nbsp

The 17th over bowled by Morris leaked 18 runs, turning out to be the most expensive over of the innings.

IPL 2018: Rajasthan make winning return to 'fortress', beat Delhi by 10 runs

After an embarrassing loss to Sri Lanka in the opening game of the Nidahas Twenty20 Tri-Series, Team India put together a much better show and thumped Bangladesh by six wickets at Colombo last night in their second match of the tournament. A lackluster Bangladesh was very underwhelming with the bat, scoring only 139-8 in their 20 overs, and India cruised to the target with eight balls to spare.

India would be delighted that they finally opened their account in the series as the defeat in the previous game must have shaken them up. The victory was achieved largely through a good display by the bowlers and another scintillating half-century by opener Shikhar Dhawan who seems to have hit a purple patch. The Indian seam bowlers had been tonked ruthlessly in the last match against Sri Lanka. But this time around, even though they were a tad erratic at times, they bowled better lengths and used good variations to trouble the opposition batsmen.

Jaydev Unadkat, although a bit expensive, was the most successful and scalped three wickets for 38 runs. Shradul Thakur, who had a horror show in the last game, was much improved last night and went for only 25 runs in 4 overs. All-rounder Vijay Shankar, making his international debut, picked up two wickets for 32 runs and was pretty impressive with the way he contained the batsmen with his variations. He was adjudged the Man of the Match and hopefully, this confidence booster would help him perform better in the coming games.

Another bowler who made a notable impression last night was young Washington Sundar. The 18-year-old off-spinner opened the bowling once again and gave away only 23 runs in his 4 overs. The youngster has been extremely impressive in whatever little chances he has got and utilised the slow surface of Colombo brilliantly last night.

Bangladesh was listless and batted without any plan. They swung their bats around and lost their key wickets at vital moments that ultimately derailed their batting completely. In the absence of Shakib-Al-Hasan, their batting suddenly looked very fragile and they would need to pull up their socks if they harbour hopes of progressing in the tournament.

For India, apart from the bowlers, Shikhar Dhawan’s fluent 55 off 43 balls was another bright spot. Camoes by Suresh Raina (28) and Manish Pandey (27*) made things easier in the relatively easy chase. However, India would be disappointed with the mode of Rishabh Pant’s dismissal. The talented, young wicket-keeper batsman was promoted to the No.3 spot yesterday. It was an opportunity for Pant to exhibit the skills he had shown in domestic cricket. Unfortunately, Pant simply swung the bat around wildly on every ball and was dismissed for just 7. Perhaps the team management needs to talk to him and make him understand that while playing the natural game is good, one needs a lot of patience and prudence to survive in international cricket. Hopefully, Pant would come into his own very soon.

Captain Rohit Sharma was good in handling his recourses. Although he would be disappointed at the erratic bowling at times as India gave away as many as 11 wides and two no-balls. India dropped a few catches on the field as well and a few players looked a bit scratchy. Also, Rohit failed with the bat yet again, scoring just 17, and would really like to get his form back before it’s too late.

India’s next game is on the 12th of March against Sri Lanka and before that, the team needs to sort a few issues out. Tightening the bowling and fielding would be on high priority as this format is cruel and better teams would really punish them for any indiscipline on the field. And if the likes of Pant and the other youngsters in the team can be more consistent, then this new-look Team India can be a force to reckon with in the tournament.

Although India finally opened their account in Nidahas T20 series, tightening the bowling and fielding should be a cause for concern to perform better in upcoming matches.

Delhi's Rishabh Pant slammed a 32-ball century in Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy against Himachal Pradesh, making it the fastest ton by an Indian and second fastest in T20's history.

The wicketkeeper-batsman scored an unbeaten 116 runs off just 38 deliveries at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground, leading his team to a thumping 10-wicket victory on Sunday.

His thriving knock included 12 sixes and eight fours.

Chris Gayle still holds the record for the fastest century in the format when he clubbed 100 off just 30 deliveries against Pune Warriors in an Indian Premier League match back in 2013.

Pant, who was retained for Rs 15 crore by Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Daredevils, had veteran batsman Gautam Gambhir in partnership but the latter only played the watching game as the youngster kept smashing the balls all around the park.

The two chased down the target of 144 in just 11.4 overs.

Pant, who batted with a phenomenal strike rate of 305.26, also took four catches behind the wicket.

It is interesting to note that Pant was sacked from state captaincy for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign despite leading the team to the Ranji Trophy final.

The decision was taken after the coach and selectors felt that captaincy was affecting Pant’s batting.
