IPL 2019: Keeping faith in match winners like Rishabh Pant is the key to Delhi's success, says Ricky Ponting

Mumbai showcased a dominant performance to defeat Delhi by 40 runs in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) here at the Feroz Shah Stadium on Thursday.

With this win, Mumbai has now moved on to the second place in the league standings whereas Delhi has slipped to the third place.

Chasing a score of 169, Delhi got off to a flying start as their opener Shikhar Dhawan hammered the visitors with regular boundaries.

He was at his fluent best, enabling the team to score 48 runs in the powerplay overs.

But Rahul Chahar cut short Dhawan's (35) innings as he sent him back to the pavilion in the seventh over of the innings, giving Mumbai the first breakthrough.

Delhi were further pegged back as Shaw (20), Colin Munro (3), skipper Shreyas Iyer (3) were sent back to the pavilion in quick succession.

Shaw and Iyer were dismissed by Chahar whereas Munro was clean bowled by Krunal Pandya.

Delhi was reduced to 63 for four and they required 106 more runs for the win from 58 deliveries.

Rishabh Pant, who did not get selected for the Indian World Cup squad also failed to leave a mark. Pant (7) was clean bowled by Jasprit Bumrah and with his dismissal, Delhi's hopes of a win crumbled.

After Pant's dismissal, no other Delhi batsman was able to stay at the crease for a long period of time.

Both Bumrah and Lasith Malinga executed yorkers in the death overs to ensure Mumbai's victory by 40 runs.

Earlier, knocks of 37* and 32 respectively, by Krunal and Hardik Pandya enabled Mumbai to score 168 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted twenty overs.

Mumbai too got off to a flying start on a sluggish pitch, Both the openers Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma took their time in getting adjusted with the pitch conditions but they started going after the bowling enabling the team to score 57 runs in the first six overs.

Amit Mishra gave Delhi their first breakthrough as he bowled a length ball on the stumps keeping a little low, Sharma (30) was playing inside the line and as a result, his stumps were rattled.

Ben Cutting (2) failed to leave a mark, as he was sent back to the pavilion pretty early as Axar Patel trapped him plumb in front, reducing Mumbai to 62 for two.

Mumbai suffered another big blow as the set batsman de Kock (35) was dismissed owing to poor communication between him and Suryakumar Yadav, which resulted in the former's run-out.

Delhi kept on bowling tight overs, not allowing the visitors to score freely and as a result, Mumbai had scored just 104 runs in fifteen overs.

Yadav and Krunal stitched a brief 30-run partnership before Rabada dismissed Yadav (26) as he had him caught at the hands of the wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant.

However, Krunal and Hardik were able to provide late flourish to Mumbai as they struck big blows in the death overs and they stitched together a partnership of 54 runs.

Delhi were not able to execute their yorkers and as a result, Mumbai posted 168 runs on the board in the allotted twenty overs. Hardik (32) was sent back to the pavilion by Kagiso Rabada whereas Krunal remained unbeaten on 37.

Mumbai scored 50 runs in the last three overs of the innings. On April 20, Mumbai Indians will play against Rajasthan whereas Delhi faces Punjab.

Rishabh Pant's exclusion from India's World Cup squad could prove to be a big gain for Delhi in the ongoing Indian Premier League, the franchise's head coach Ricky Ponting has said.

Dinesh Karthik pipped young Pant to the second wicketkeeper's spot in India's World Cup squad, which was announced on Monday.

With former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni the undisputed first-choice wicketkeeper, India's selectors preferred Karthik's experience to the raw aggression of the 21-year-old Pant.

"I had a quick chat with him (Pant) on Monday night, and he seems to have taken it quite well," Australia's former World Cup-winning captain Ponting told reporters.

"He is obviously disappointed as he would have loved to be in the squad as a lot of other players would have as well. But the thing with him that he has to remember and we all have to remember is that he is still pretty young.

"He will have the opportunity to potentially play in three or four more World Cups over the course of his career."

Famed for his swashbuckling batting, Pant impressed in the test series in England and Australia and is perceived as a long-term replacement for Dhoni when the 37-year-old decides to quit limited-overs formats.

Ponting advised Pant to take the World Cup snub positively and concentrate on scoring heavily for his IPL franchise.

"But what might be a negative thing for him to not get picked in the Indian team, might turn out to be a very positive thing for the Delhi Capitals as he can totally focus on playing his best cricket for us," Ponting said.

"Like I said a few games ago, he is a match-winner and I’m sure he will come back strongly to win more matches for us. It is important that he focuses on the little things on the field that make him a really good player for us.

"There is nothing he can do now to get into that World Cup team, but he can definitely help the Delhi Capitals win some matches in the coming days which will help him boost his confidence for the future as well."

Pant's team are currently second in the IPL standings with 10 points from nine matches while champions Chennai top the leaderboard with 14 from 10.

Vijay Shankar is three dimensional, looking at him for no 4: MSK Prasad after naming India's World Cup squad

11 players who can solve fourth-place conundrum in Team India's World Cup squad

Rishabh Pant must learn the virtue of patience to transform himself from an exciting match-winner to a crucial 'finisher' for India, according to former captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth.

Famed for his swashbuckling batting, Pant is expected to be the second wicketkeeper in India's World Cup squad, behind Mahendra Singh Dhoni, after impressing across all three formats.

Pant smashed a blistering 78 not out of 27 balls in an Indian Premier League match against Mumbai Indians last month but the former aggressive opener advised the Delhi Capitals player to shun risks early in his knock.

"I firmly believe that he is one cricketer in India who could win his side - be it Delhi Capitals or Indian teams - games from hopeless situations," Srikkanth wrote in a column in Friday's Times of India newspaper.

"This kid has it in him but from my observation I feel that he doesn't give himself enough time to showcase his talent in the middle."

"He goes too hard right at the start. He needs to play in the 'V' the first few balls, irrespective of the format, maybe push the ball towards long-on or long-off frequently and get his eyes in.

"He has great ability and a range of shots to make it up in the end," added Srikkanth, a member of India's triumphant 1983 World Cup team.

Delhi head coach Ricky Ponting also believes Pant needed to be patient to be able to inflict maximum damage on rivals in the final overs.

"With Rishabh in white-ball cricket, the issue is that he's such a competitor that sometimes that gets the better of him," Ponting said ahead of Friday's match with Kolkata Knight Riders.

"He wants to get things done quickly in the white-ball game. In the tests he doesn't so much because there's not as much scoring pressure in tests."

Ponting, however, would not ask the 21-year-old to change the way he bats.

"I'm not going to curb the way he plays, I'm not gonna tell him to slow down because if he plays his best he will win games for us," Ponting said.

"I want him to go out with pure freedom and with no other thought other than hitting the ball for a six. We saw in Mumbai, when it comes off, we're going to win."

Strength and weaknesses of Mumbai:

The magnificent Rohit Sharma, who has played some match-winning knock in past is the strength of the team.

And in the bowling department, pacer Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya are Mumbai's core.

And to add more strength, Mumbai have added legendary Yuvraj Singh to their squad.

IPL 2019: Squad analysis of Delhi

India's wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni (MSD) was replaced by young bloke Rishabh Pant in the fourth ODI against Australia. Pant gave a decent performance with bat scoring 34 off 26 balls but failed miserably with the gloves.

One of the reasons India lost the fourth game despite scoring a mammoth 358, was poor fielding, especially by Pant.

The youngster missing a few clear-cut chances, with one being trying to stump a batsman in Dhoni's no-look flick. His missed chance actually turned the game in Australia's favour.

His failure behind the stumps also drew an angry reaction from India skipper Virat Kohli.

Rishabh Pant's form is a "healthy headache" for India who are contemplating playing the 21-year-old wicketkeeper as a specialist batsman at this year's World Cup, chief selector M.S.K. Prasad has said.

Team India achieved the momentous Test series win on Australian soil since India started touring Australia in 1947-48. The Virat Kohli-led team clinched the series 2-1 after a 71-year wait.

After the fourth and final weather-affected match at the Sydney Cricket Ground finished in a draw, Team India accomplished what former Indian teams were unable to do. With a great performance in both batting and bowling departments, Team India justified their No-1 status in Test ranking.

Despite Cheteshwar Pujara's classic show throughout the series, the rising star was, no doubt, Rishabh Pant.

From on-field banters to hitting an unbeaten century, the 21-year-old gutsy Pant proved that he is the one for the future. Pant, who possesses a good sense of humour, enjoyed a colourful Test series and remained in the headlines.

This Test series will definitely be an important landmark in his career.

Pant scripted history when he became the first Indian wicket-keeper to score a century in Australia. He scored an unbeaten 159 off 189 balls at Sydney to record the highest ever score by an Indian wicket-keeper in an away Test. It was the highest score by an Asian wicket-keeper outside sub-continent. With a total of 350, he was also the second highest run-getter after Pujara in Australia.

Besides batting, Pant impressed with his gloves too as he broke the record for most catches - 20 - by an Indian wicketkeeper in a Test series.

When Indian lower batting order struggled to score runs, Pant came at the seventh spot, quickly got into the groove and struck some crisp shots to contribute crucial runs for the team lower down the order.

The type of game Pant has displayed Down Under, has inspired youngsters and fulfilled what is required to build a stronger team.

In his Test debut year, Pant has scored a Test hundred each in England and Australia within months and scored a total of 696 runs.

Apart from Tests, Pant has been outstanding so far in Indian Premier League (IPL) as he scored 1,248 runs in 38 matches with a strike rate of 162.71 and in T20 Internationals he has played 10 matches and amassed 157 runs.

However, Pant is yet to prove himself in the one-day format since he has played just three ODIs scoring 41 runs.

Moreover, he is the top contender to be India's permanent wicket-keeper in all formats of the game when MS Dhoni bids goodbye to ODIs having already pulled out from Tests.

Now, the real "test" for selectors is whether to pick Pant in the World Cup, maybe the upcoming ODI series against Australia and New Zealand will decide where Dhoni will be under the scanner.

May the best man win.

Rishabh Pant and Tim Paine's good-humoured on-field banter has been lapped up by the television viewers and the Indian described it as a way of maintaining intensity during long on-field hours.

The official broadcasters of ongoing India versus Australia series Fox Cricket has kept the stump microphone on and some of the interesting exchanges between Paine and Pant have been recorded.

Pant, whose picture of holding Tim Paine's son along with the Australian skipper's wife Bonnie went viral after the "babysitter" banter, didn't mind that stump mic is on.

Rishabh Pant explains importance of good-humoured on-field banter

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting praised young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, so much so that he called him "another" Adam Gilchrist after the Indian's blistering 159 in the fourth Test.

"He is a real talent and an incredibly good ball striker. He has got a really good game sense as well. I have been lucky enough to coach him at Delhi (Capitals)," said Ponting, who had worked with the Indian during his stint with Delhi franchise at the Indian Premier League.

"He has got to do a bit of work on his keeping and he will also become a better batsman.

"We talk about him in the commentary box and he is sort of like another Adam Gilchrist," Ponting told cricket.Com.Au.

Gilchrist, the legendary Australian wicket-keeper batsman, has played 96 Tests, scoring 5570 runs at an average of 47.6. He also represented his country in 287 ODIs, amassing 9619 runs at 35.89.
