Among the 41 workers who were safely extracted out from the collapsed Uttarakhand tunnel after 17 days of rescue operation on Tuesday (Nov 29), the last one to emerge from the dark hole was Gabbar Singh Negi.

Negi, who had emerged as a strong leader and helped the other 40 workers to stay calm, said that since he is the senior-most, he will be the last one to step out.

Negi was born 260 km away in Pauri Garhwal district and unfortunately was trapped in the the collapsed tunnel.

In the 400 hours spent by the workers nearly 200 feet inside the ground, Negi taught yoga and meditation to his colleagues to help them stay mentally and physically active, and ensured that they were rescued safely by committing that he would be the last to come out.

"I am senior-most... I will be the last to come out...', this is what he told me," said his relieved and happy brother Jaymal Singh Negi, while speaking to NDTV, hours after 41 men were taken out from the tunnel and provided extensive medical check-ups for ensuring that they have no injuries or illness.

It is now being said that Gabbar Negi's efforts have helped all 41 survive the disaster with few injuries and keep the catastrophic situation under control.

Uttarakhand tunnel rescue Day 12 updates: Operation to resume Friday, CM Dhami to stay overnight

After an exhaustive 70-hour rescue mission in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, officials expressed optimism that all 40 trapped labourers under a collapsed tunnel will be evacuated by Wednesday (Nov 15). The operation, however, faced setbacks on Tuesday (Nov 14) due to a fresh landslide, triggering a stampede-like situation and injuring two workers.

Over 160 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were mobilised urgently to reach the stranded workers.

What's the plan?

To facilitate the evacuation, eight pipes of 900-millimetre diameter and five pipes of 800-millimetre diameter, each six metres long and made of mild steel, have been deployed.

The strategy involves sequentially pushing these pipes through the rubble using drilling equipment, creating a pathway for the trapped workers.

The insertion process, termed shotcreting, involves spraying concrete on the debris to stabilise loose material.

Uttarakhand tunnel mishap: How will a 3-ft pipe rescue trapped labourers?

Anurag Maloo was atop the 10th highest mountain in the world, the 8,091-metre Mt Annapurna in Nepal, when he faced the most fateful day of his life. While descending, the mountaineer from Kishangarh city of India's northern Rajasthan state chose the wrong rope. And this mistake led the 34-year to fall disastrously into a deep crevasse on April 17. He remained in the snow-clad mountains for three days, waiting for rescue. A rescue team could take him out safely on April 20, 2023, a turning point in Maloo's life. After spending six months in India's AIIMS hospital undergoing numerous surgeries, Maloo is back at home in Rajasthan's Kishangarh. Maloo joined WION'S Heena Sharma for a quick chat.

Firefighters backed by the army were rescuing hundreds of people Saturday in villages in central Greece blocked off by floods that have claimed at least 10 lives.

"More than 2,850 people have been rescued since the beginning of the bad weather," fire department spokesman Yannis Artopios told broadcaster Mega on Saturday.

"There are still many people in the villages around Karditsa, Palamas and toward Trikala. They are not missing, they are trapped," he said.

Greek civil protection authorities said Saturday evening that seven people were officially listed as missing, including an Austrian couple visiting the area around the picturesque peak of Pelion in the Thessaly region of northeastern Greece.

Several houses remain under water in the village of Palamas and rescue workers were trying to reach marooned people, an AFP journalist said.

"It was truly hellish," said 54-year-old Palamas resident Eleni Patouli.

"We were stuck without help or information for hours. The (emergency services) 112 message to evacuate arrived just as we were facing up to the flooding and we had no means of escape," she told AFP.

The situation also remains worrying near the city of Larissa, a few kilometres to the east.

"We are having great difficulties with the Pinios river, next to the city of Larissa, which has overflowed and reached a height of 2.5 metres (eight feet) on the outskirts of Larissa," Artopios said.

The flooding has laid waste to thousands of hectares of rich agricultural land and farmers have also lost substantial livestock numbers.

'Extreme' weather event

"We are devastated. More than 1,500 pigs have drowned -- 70 percent of our farm suffered damage," said 58-year-old Thomas Kasos.

In the port city of Volos, the water supply has become a problem, since pumping stations and a large part of the supply network were damaged. The health ministry has warned that the water is not suitable for drinking.

"Gastroenteritis cases have appeared and there is a risk of that increasing if people don't have enough water. Authorities need to distribute at least two litres of drinking water to everyone," Elena Riza, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Athens School of Medicine, told public broadcaster ERT.

Traffic also remained challenging Saturday with the highway connecting Thessaloniki, the country's second largest city, and the capital Athens cut off in several places.

The storm, named "Daniel", struck the central coastal region of Magnesia on Monday and Tuesday before hitting other towns such as Karditsa and Trikala further inland on Wednesday.

Experts have described the event as "extreme in terms of the amount of water falling in a space of 24 hours".

The heavy rains and flooding follow devastating fires in Greece this summer that killed at least 26 people.

As the world warms, the atmosphere contains more water vapour which increases the risk of heavy precipitation in some parts of the world, notably in Asia, Western Europe and Latin America.

Combined with other factors such as urbanisation and land-use planning, these more intense rainfall events contribute to flooding.

Severe flooding in neighbouring Turkey and Bulgaria this week left 12 people dead.

Rescues underway in Greek towns cut off by floods

A pickup truck driver came out alive after spending an astonishing five days trapped at the bottom of a treacherous 100-foot ravine in Southern California. The rescue operation was conducted in Kern County, situated approximately 170 kilometres to the north of Los Angeles.

The terrifying plunge

On August 29, 2023, tragedy struck as the driver's vehicle careened off the winding Comanche Point Road. The impact was severe, rendering the driver immobilised amidst the rugged terrain of Kern County's Tehachapi Mountains. Located between the towns of Arvin and Stallion Springs, this remote area became the setting for an awe-inspiring tale of survival.

On the morning of September 2, a passerby made a startling discovery. He spotted the badly damaged pickup truck nestled at the base of the sheer ravine. The Kern County Fire Department received the alert just before 11 am, sparking a chain of events that would lead to an incredible rescue mission.

In two hours, emergency crews rescued Wyatt Kauffman after he fell off the cliff on Tuesday and plunged almost 100 ft (30 meters) at the Bright Angel Point trail, said authorities.

The officials airlifted Wyatt to a Las Vegas hospital for treatment of a ruptured spleen, a concussion, a collapsed lung, nine broken vertebrae, a dislocated finger and a broken hand.

“I was up on the ledge and was moving out of the way so other people could take a picture,” said Wyatt, while speaking to Phoenix television station KPNX.

“I squatted down and was holding onto a rock. I only had one hand on it. It wasn’t that good of a grip. It was kind of pushing me back. I lost my grip and started to fall back," he added.

Rescue crews moved down the cliff and helped the injured boy get out of the canyon in a basket.

“I just remember somewhat waking up and being in the back of an ambulance and a helicopter and getting on a plane and getting here” to the hospital, stated Kauffman, who lives in Casselton, North Dakota.

Miraculous escape

A national park service search and rescue team established a rope rescue down to the narrow and steep trail and brought the boy back safely to the rim.

“Team members implemented a high-angle technical rope rescue and were able to safely extract him,” said the national park Service in a statement.

For further care, Wyatt was then taken to a pediatric trauma centre. Father of the boy, Brian Kauffman was in North Dakota when he was informed about the fall and rescue of his son.

“We’re extremely grateful for the work of everyone. Two hours is an eternity in a situation like that,” Brian Kauffman stated.

He stated that Wyatt and his mother had gone on a trip to visit national parks when the Grand Canyon fall incident took place.

Brian Kauffman said that the hospital discharged his son on Saturday. “We’re just lucky we’re bringing our kid home in a car in the front seat instead of in a box,” said Brian Kauffman, while speaking to KPNX.

Video: 5 killed and 8 missing after building collapses in Brazil's Pernambuco

A heartwarming video captures the touching moment when Vanilla, a chimpanzee who survived a harrowing laboratory experiment programme, witnesses the sky for the first time in her new sanctuary home.

Vanilla, a 29-year-old chimp, arrived at the sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida, where she finally found solace and contentment after enduring years of confinement and mistreatment, reported the Mirror.

Vanilla's previous life was marked by suffering at the Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates (LEMSIP) in New York, which housed numerous chimpanzees and monkeys until its closure in 1996. Advocates for animal welfare, such as Project R&R, reveal that chimps like Vanilla were deprived of outdoor access and confined to small cages.

Vanilla, along with her family group, embarked on a cross-country journey to Florida, facilitated by the FedEx Cares program and Pero Family Farms.

Vanilla, the chimp finds happiness

Vanilla's new home, a three-acre island, welcomed her with open arms and a warm embrace from alpha male Dwight. The pair developed a playful relationship, with Vanilla even playfully stealing food from Dwight. Dr. Andrew Halloran, a primatologist from Save the Chimps, shared that Vanilla's new enclosure represents a significant improvement compared to her previous living conditions in California. He described her settling in well, exploring the island with her fellow chimps and often perching atop a three-story climbing platform to survey her new world.

Save the Chimps, a sanctuary dedicated to providing refuge for primates rescued from various backgrounds such as exotic pet trade, roadside zoos, laboratories, and the entertainment industry, currently cares for 226 chimps. Vanilla's island is home to 18 other chimps, with whom she has formed positive relationships.
