Kerala Rains: Death toll reaches 9

An elderly woman could be seen running from one person to another screaming through the rain swept roads in this high range hamlet, located at the foothills of Western Ghats mountain ranges, on Sunday morning.

"I have lost everything...Everything in my life...Where should I go? Who will give me a shelter?" the woman, clad in a tattered saree, asked aloud crying and running here and there.

The unexpected torrential rain, which pounded the village on Saturday, washed away every penny of her life time earnings and made her homeless all of a sudden.

"I begged our Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan sir to give me two cents of land to construct a 'koora' (hut). I have nowhere to go. My daughters' houses are also submerged. Now I am going to the church to see whether I will get a place there," she told the journalists gathered at the place.

It was the story of many hapless families in Koottickal, located in Kottayam district of Kerala which suffered severe destruction and human casualty due to a series of landslips triggered by heavy rains yesterday.

When the extreme rains showed a slight dip this morning, a large number of people in this village could be seen as displaced and became the inmates of rehabilitation campus.

Many elderly villagers said it was for the first time in their decades-old life that they were seeing and experiencing such severe rainfall.

A local shop owner here pointed to his new car, which can be seen as destroyed and partially hanging with its back wheels stuck on a broken wall in his house compound.

The situation was not different in Kokkayar, a hilly hamlet in Idukki district as well, which also witnessed a series of landslips and human casualty on Saturday in incessant rains.

A shocked Rajamma, a woman villager, was yet to believe that a four-member family including children, who was seen engaged in some construction activities near her home on the foothills of hill, swept away by flood waters in front of her eyes.

The elderly woman said she advised the family to move away from the place when water was seen coming down from the hill tops in a small scale.

Can you imagine a cat-sized dinosaur? The answer is most likely a 'no'. When someone says dinosaurs, all we can imagine is a scary creature the size of a building eyeing for round two of its brunch. Movies haven't helped change this perception.

Dinosaurs ruled the pre-historic world but their beginnings were very humble. They were literally the size of a cat. But they gradually grew in size and reached scary proportions within 2 million years. And a super long rainy spell in this period helped.

And what caused this rain? Scientists say continued volcanic activity.

Researchers who carried out the study have published their findings in journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The scientists studied sediments at the bottom of an ancient lake crater in China (Jiyuan basin) and concluded that between 234 and 232 million years ago, earth experienced what are called 'pulses' of volcanic activity. This increased amount of carbon dioxide in the air. This increased temperature and intensified hydrologic cycle.

This resulted in long spell of rain and made the atmosphere humid. This environment created favourable conditions for large amphibians and reptiles (dinosaurs) to thrive and for the latter, increase in size immensely.

Rain poured on the highest point of the Greenland ice sheet for the first time in recorded history in August.

It didn't even make the news.

However, rain in a country known for its severe cold foreshadows a future that would alter global coastlines and submerge entire towns.

The US Snow and Ice Data Center stated that rain was seen for many hours on August 14 at a measurement site more than 3,000 metres (9,800 feet) above the sheet.

"This is an extreme event as it may never have happened before. This is probably a sign of global warming.," Martin Stendel, a researcher at the Danish Meteorological Institute, said.

Only nine times in the past 2,000 years have temperatures at the pinnacle of the sheet reached above freezing. Three of those incidents have occurred in the last ten years, although there was no rain on the prior two occasions, in 2012 and 2019, he said.

Temperatures must be above or just below zero degrees Celsius for the rain to fall, indicating the danger that rising temperatures pose to the world's second-largest ice sheet, behind Antarctica.

Outside of Antarctica, the Greenland ice sheet has four times the amount of ice as all other glaciers and ice fields combined.

Greenland, the world's largest island, is more than 36,000 times the size of Manhattan and is covered in ice that is thousands of feet thick in many areas.

The ice sheet disintegrates as carbon dioxide and methane collect in our atmosphere, causing our planet to heat (the last six years have been the warmest on record).

In the last decade, Greenland has lost more ice than it did in the previous century.

In a paper published two years ago in Nature, a respected scientific publication, a group of climate scientists estimated that if Greenland continues to melt, tens of millions of people might face annual floods and displacement by 2030 – less than nine years from now.

By the end of the century, when Antarctica, which has far more ice than Greenland, begins a phase of catastrophic melting, the number of people at risk of flooding might have risen to about half a billion.

Experts warn first-ever rain in Greenland ice sheet shows risks of climate change

Heavy rains delayed flights and disrupted traffic in India`s capital New Delhi on Saturday, inundating several places including the forecourt of Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Delhi has received a 46-year high 1.0 metre (3.3 feet) of rain this monsoon season, said the Indian Meteorological Department. The season runs until the end of the month.

Vistara, SpiceJet Ltd, IndiGo and other airlines issued travel advisories, asking passengers to check the status of their flights.

"Due to waterlogging on account of heavy rains in Delhi, traffic congestion is expected. Customers travelling are advised to allow more time for their journey to the airport," Vistara tweeted.

Airport authorities later tweeted that they had drained the water "and the issue has been resolved".

Social media users posted videos of waterlogging of streets and the airport, as well as stranded busses.

The rain caused major traffic disruption and severe flooding in low-lying areas of the city, said the weather department, suggesting people stay indoors. It has issued an orange alert, indicating authorities should be prepared to take action.

It predicted thunderstorm with "heavy to very heavy intensity rain" in Delhi and neighbouring areas, that could case partial damage to vulnerable structures, plantations and standing crops, among others.

The Delhi Traffic Police tweeted information to commuters about the stretches hit by rains and suggesting alternative routes.

At least 8 people, including two children, were killed after Hurricane Grace pummelled eastern Mexico on Sunday, causing floods, mudslides, and wrecking homes.

The storm, blowing at maximum sustained winds of 125 miles (200 kilometres) per hour, made landfall in Mexico for the second time near Tecolutla in Veracruz state.

The state government said among the eight people killed, 6 belonged to a single-family. Among the deceased include a young girl who was killed by a mudslide that hit her home.

While an adult was killed by a collapsed roof in Poza Rica city, further north in the state, Veracruz governor Cuitlahuac Garcia told a news conference.

“The state of emergency has not ended," Reuters quoted Garcia as saying.

Local television showed severe flooding in Xalapa, with coffins from a local business floating down a waterlogged street. The nearby River Actopan burst its banks, shutting down a local highway, the officials said.

Some flights were cancelled at Mexico international airport due to the hurricane. The Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) national power utility reported 565,000 electricity users were affected by outages.

However, Grace fizzled quickly as it moved inland over the central highlands.

Earlier in the week, Hurricane Grace battered Mexico's Caribbean coast, downing trees and resulting in power outages for nearly 7,00,000 people. However, no loss of life was reported, authorities said.

Tropical Storm Henri was set to make landfall on the US east coast Sunday, with millions in New England and New York's Long Island preparing for flash flooding, violent winds and power outages. The US National Hurricane Center said in its 11:00 am (1500 GMT) advisory that Henri was 15 miles (25 kilometers) southeast of Montauk Point in New York state.

The storm, earlier downgraded from a hurricane, was heading east towards Rhode Island where it was due to hit land early afternoon, the center said. Forecasters warned of heavy rainfall and the risk of surging seas as the storm churned in the Atlantic, packing maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour, down from 75 mph earlier.

"There's still a lot to worry about. We're not out of harm's way," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told reporters Sunday morning. As the surface layer of oceans warms due to climate change, cyclones are becoming more powerful and carry more water, posing an increasing threat to the world's coastal communities, scientists say. Storm surges amplified by rising seas can be especially devastating and forecasters warned Henri could bring surges of up to five feet in coastal areas.

A swath of the northeastern coastline, including New York City, was under alert as the storm approached. If Henri is upgraded again then it would be the first hurricane to hit New England in 30 years. On Long Island, home to the plush Hamptons villages where wealthy New Yorkers retreat in summer, some residents made last-minute rushes to boarded-up convenience stores to stock up on water and other supplies. But roads were generally quiet as residents prepared to ride out the storm at home.

"We know we're going to get tail-whipped by this thing," said Amy Pedatella, a 46-year-old property manager who spent Saturday securing seaside homes in the Hamptons. Nasty weather that preceded Henri late Saturday forced New York City to halt a star-studded Central Park concert billed as a "homecoming" for a metropolis hard hit by the pandemic.

The approaching then-hurricane had prompted Cuomo to announce a state of emergency and the deployment of 500 National Guard soldiers in anticipation of response efforts. Henri was anticipated to miss New York City by several miles, but still caused tropical storm conditions overnight. The National Weather Service said 1.94 inches of rain fell on Central Park between 10 pm and 11 pm Saturday, the wettest hour on record in New York City. An announcer cut off pop legend Barry Manilow mid-song to urge revelers to proceed swiftly but calmly to the nearest exit.

"I guess for safety it makes sense. I mean I can hear the thunder," said attendee Maria Fuentes.

'Dangerous'

The NHC warned of "a dangerous storm surge, hurricane conditions and flooding" in areas of southern New England and Long Island. Henri is expected to produce three to six inches of rain (7.5 to 15 centimeters) across the region, with isolated maximum totals near 10 inches, the NHC warned.

The heavy rainfall "may result in considerable flash, urban, and small stream flooding" as well as river flooding. High winds are expected to knock out electricity for hundreds of thousands of people across the region and delay countless flights. Officials in New England -- which includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont -- have warned people to get ready.

The last hurricane to make landfall onto New England was Hurricane Bob in 1991. That storm killed at least 17 people. It has been almost a decade since such severe weather threatened the region. "The last time we had hurricane watches issued for the area was for Hurricane Irene, back in late August of 2011," tweeted the National Weather Service in New York City. The last hurricane to make landfall in Long Island was Gloria in 1985. The warnings have reignited memories of Hurricane Sandy, a more powerful storm that knocked out power for much of Manhattan and flooded subways in 2012. The US PGA Tour postponed the final round of the Northern Trust tournament in suburban New York to Monday because of Henri.

Tropical Storm Henri was set to make landfall on the US east coast Sunday, with millions in New England and New York's Long Island preparing for flash flooding, violent winds and power outages.

Global warming and the buzz around it is not new. But when we get constant reminders how it is affecting our planet, it becomes a scary thing. Nature itself sends these reminders our way. Sometimes they are in the form of tornados or melting ice caps.

Rain is generally a good thing. But when it rains where it usually should snow, alarm bells ring. At the summit of Greenland, it rained for the first time on record. The precipitation at the summit is usually in the form of snow. But thanks to global warming, another warning has come our way. The rain means that Greenland is warming up fast.

As per a report on CNN, temperature at the summit rose above the freezing point for just third time in the decade. The warm air fuelled the extreme rain event. This resulted in 7 billion tons of water falling in the form of rain. The report quotes a scientist as saying that this was "unprecedented"

A major United Nations climate report released earlier this month that Greenland's ice has been melting for the last two decades because of burning of fossil fuels.

A study published in the journal Cryosphere says that Earth has lost 28 trillion tonnes of ice since the mid-90s

Torrential rain lashed much of Japan on Sunday, flooding roads and buildings in the western part of the country, while three people were feared dead after a landslide in central Nagano prefecture.

Large parts of Japan, particularly the southernmost main island of Kyushu, have seen record levels of rainfall, causing rivers to overflow and triggering landslides.

While the rain had stopped in much of Kyushu as of Sunday morning, Tokyo and other parts of the country were pounded by the downpour.

Japan "will continue to face conditions in which a large-scale disaster could occur at anytime, anywhere," Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said at a ministerial meeting on Sunday. He called on local municipalities and relevant organisations to cooperate and act with speed on rescue missions and aid.

"We must be on high alert even in areas where the rain has tapered off," Suga added.

In Takeo, a city in Saga prefecture in Kyushu, entire roads were submerged as rescue workers in wetsuits dragged inflatable boats and surveyed the damage. Local residents carried broomsticks and buckets and waded knee-deep in water.

"I've experienced three floods like this so far, but this is the worst," said Toshimi Kusumoto, a 68-year-old doctor whose clinic was flooded.

Kusumoto waited out the rain with his family on the second floor of his house, he said, located just behind the clinic.

The water reached his house, too, meaning most of the appliances on the ground floor would have to be replaced. His garage was bent out of shape, presumably from the pressure of the water.

His son Daigo said their family was prepared for the flooding but was concerned over the frequency at which torrential downpours were pummelling the area, and was considering re-building his house to raise the ground level.

He had re-built the house only four years ago and it had seen two floods already.

"It's a bit much if it happens this frequently," Daigo said, as he hosed down the mud in front of the house.

In 2019, Takeo city was hit by a record downpour that killed three people. The government at the time estimated that such a deluge would only happen once every few decades.

"But what can you do?" said Toshimi, with a slight shrug.

Takayuki Haraguchi, 68, who works as a caretaker at a local sports centre, had come to survey the damage briefly when it was raining on Saturday.

"It looked no different from the sea," he said as he recalled what he saw on Saturday morning.

Hitomi Fuchino, 41, evacuated on a boat to a local middle school in Takeo city on Saturday morning after her house and second-hand clothes shop were immersed in water.

Her children lounged on a makeshift cardboard bed at the evacuation centre, while a pair of shorts were hung to dry in front of a fan.

Fuchino was not sure when she would return to her house given that more rain was being forecast.

"We can't really move at this point," she said wearily.

Elsewhere in Saga, 113 patients at a local hospital and 69 nursing home residents at the same site were evacuated to higher floors after flooding, public broadcaster NHK said. On Saturday, rescue workers in the prefecture had airlifted four residents using a helicopter in areas where the flooding was intense.

After a landslide hit a house in Okaya city in central Nagano, three people including a boy aged under 10 were found without vital signs while two others were injured, NHK said.

Separate to the Okaya case, NHK reported that as of midday on Sunday three people were confirmed dead nationwide due to the rains and four others were missing.

Virat Kohli communicated his disappointment after the India-England Trent Bridge Test finished in a draw, with the last day getting washed away because of a downpour. He said his side had their chances. Pursuing 209 to go one up in the five-match series, India were 52 for one at stumps on Day 4, requiring 157 additional to win on the last day. With nine wickets in hand, India had their odds of a win, however, that was at last not to be, as there was no play conceivable on the last day.

“We were expecting rain on days three and four, but it chose to come on Day Five. It would have been enjoyable to play and watch, but it’s a shame. This is exactly what we wanted to do - start strong. On Day Five, we knew we had our chances," said the Indian skipper in the post-match presentation.

“We certainly felt like we were on top of the game. Getting that lead was crucial, but it’s a shame we couldn’t finish day five. Getting to fifty overnight was important. It wasn’t just about survival. It was about getting the boundaries when we got the chance,” he added.

India were in a tricky situation in the first innings of the Test, losing four wickets with just 112 on the board after a 97-run opening stand. The lower order suddenly came great and contributed indispensable runs. The last three players contributed 41 runs to help India acquire a key 95-run first-innings lead.

“It’s the hard work of three-odd weeks. They were in the nets regularly, and we got a lead of 95 purely from their efforts. Those runs were gold dust. I think they did a tremendous job with the bat,” he said.

Talking about the combination for the remainder of the series, Virat Kohli said that the Indian team is probably going to continue with four pacers and one spinner in the leftover four Tests.

“Most likely, it will be a template going ahead, but we’ve always been adaptable as well, to the conditions and pace of the wicket. It’s going to be an exciting series to be a part of, as India-England always is," he concluded.

The second Test of the series begins at Lord's on August 12.

The military blasted open a dam to release floodwaters threatening one of its most heavily populated provinces, as at least 25 died in torrential rains in central China.

Those who died include a dozen passengers trapped in a flooded subway.

The dam was blasted late Tuesday night in the city of Luoyang, just as severe flooding overwhelmed the Henan provincial capital of Zhengzhou, trapping residents in the subway system and stranding them at schools, apartments and offices.

President Xi Jinping described the situation as "extremely severe" with flood control measures entering a "critical stage", state media reported.

Approximately 200,000 residents were evacuated in Zhengzhou, local government officials said.

Terrible #floods also in #Henan, China. 😢#ClimateCrisis. Chinese soldiers blast dam to divert floodwaters as record rains kill 25

Heavy rains and flooding have forced thousands of people to evacuate in China's southwestern province of Sichuan, with authorities on Sunday, urging citizens across the country to brace for more downpours.

In Sichuan, torrential rain since Friday, has raised the water levels of 14 rivers, swept away boats and bridges and forced the evacuation of more than 4,600 people, state media reported.

While no casualties have been reported, state media said the rain and flooding have affected more than 120,000 people, forced the cancellation of some train services and caused more than 176 million yuan ($27 million) worth of damage. About 27,000 homes in the city of Bazhong, Sichuan were reported to be without power.

About 900 km (560 miles) to the northeast in the city of Xinzhou, Shanxi province, state media photos showed cars driving through inundated streets. Jincheng city, also in Shanxi province, raised its heavy rain signal to red, the highest level.

On Sunday, China's National Meteorological Centre renewed an alert for rainstorms across the country, forecasting heavy rainfall across wide swathes of north and central China.

The Beijing Meteorological Observatory said accumulated rainfall in the capital is expected to reach 60 to 100 millimetres on average between 5 pm on Sunday and 8 am on Tuesday, while the city's flood control authority warned of the heaviest rains in three years.

The city typically records around 600 millimeters of rain annually.

In Hebei province bordering Beijing, heavy rain and thunderstorms left airplanes temporarily unable to take off and land at the airport in Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital, a local news portal reported.

Murky skies and drizzle could not dampen the enthusiasm of spectators arriving on Monday for the start of the 134th Wimbledon Championships which were cancelled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

COVID-19 protocols mean this year`s tournament will look and feel a little different -- but one old Wimbledon tradition remained firmly intact with rain delaying the scheduled 1000GMT start on the outside courts.

Fittingly for the eagerly-awaited return of the tournament, Andy Murray will resume his role as flag-bearer for the home nation with a prime time engagement later on Centre Court.

Whisper it quietly, but it almost feels like old times.

Not quite, though, like Wimbledon, being used as a government-approved "pilot event", will be missing some old favourites.

The iconic "queue" for daily entry will not form, Henman Hill will be sparsely populated and fans will not have the thrill of bumping into famous players strolling to the grounds from plush rentals in the Village.

Players will all be staying in a central London hotel to minimise the risks of COVID-19 infections.

Crowds will be thinner too with attendances limited to 50% of ground capacity, although hopefully rising to full houses on Centre Court for the men`s and women`s finals on July 10-11.

But after last year`s cancellation, the first since the Second World War, excitement is brewing for a fortnight of grasscourt drama, even if there are notable absentees.

Spaniard Rafa Nadal, whose 2008 final win over Roger Federer is part of Wimbledon folklore, is not playing. Neither is reigning women`s champion Simona Halep nor Japan`s four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka.

POSITIVE TEST

British number one Johanna Konta withdrew on the eve of the tournament after a member of her entourage tested positive for COVID-19 -- a worrying start for nervy organisers.

But a high-quality cast has assembled in the biosecure bubble and women`s top seed Ash Barty summed up what Wimbledon means.

"You walk through the gates here at the All England Club and you`re instantly filled with gratitude," the Australian said.

"It was a tournament that was sorely missed last year. Every time you get to walk through these gates, it`s a feeling that you can`t take for granted."

For Murray, who ended a 77-year drought for British men when he won the 2013 title and triumphed again three years later, Wimbledon represents a return to some kind of normality.

The former world number one has not played a singles match at the All England Club since a quarter-final defeat by Sam Querrey in 2017 -- after which his body began to fail and his career appeared to be hanging by a thread.

"I know it`s not normal, but it feels somewhat normal now..., with all the players around and practising, knowing that... we`ll be playing not in front of a full crowd but in front of a lot of people," Murray said.

The 34-year-old will close the schedule on Centre Court against Georgian 24th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Men`s defending champion Novak Djokovic is due to open proceedings on Centre Court against British teenage wildcard Jack Draper as he begins his quest for a record-equalling 20th Grand Slam title.

Two-time women`s champion Petra Kvitova is next up against former U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens in the pick of the women`s first-round action.

Vaughan is known for engaging with Indian fans in the past. The former England skipper was trolled for predicting that Australia will clean up India in the Test series, whereas, the Men in Blue ended up winning a thriller. He also was trolled for questioning the Indian pitches used during England's Tour of India.

Earlier, Vaughan had predicted that Kane Williamson and Co. will be victorious in the inaugural World Test Championship final.

The juggernaut clash between India and New Zealand was set to kick-off at 3 PM (IST), however, heavy downpour, kept delaying the match. After losing more than three hours on an opening day, the play has finally been called off.

The Day 1 of the highly-anticipated was abandoned without a toss. With this, all hopes rely on the reserve day set by ICC on June 23 that will be used to make up for lost overs and time due to rains.

Team India announced their playing XI, a day ahead of the clash, but could make changes as the toss did not take place.

A glance at the conjecture for Day 1 of the India versus New Zealand WTC last doesn't make for charming perusing taking everything into account. There is a forecast for a downpour just as notice for rainstorms. The overcast cover is the gauge to be a high 94% while the temperature will be cool, at around 16 degrees Celsius.

The climate for the excess four days of India versus New Zealand WTC final is additionally not unreasonably encouraging, with the reliable expectation of downpour and industrious overcast cover.

The forecast for Day 1 isn't encouraging. In what is terrible information for fans, a downpour is probably going to unleash destruction in this match, with showers.

Various cricketers, analysts, and locals from Southampton have shared visuals from the stadium.

A parched swath of Central California is set to receive welcome rounds of rain and snow over the next week, but the forecast is raising concerns about flash flooding and mudslides in areas that endured a treacherous wildfire season last year.

Starting Friday, weather systems will bring a mix of rain and snow to parts of Northern and Central California through the middle of next week, with much of the snow expected in higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada. Between 5 to 10 inches of precipitation are expected, though some areas could receive up to 15 inches in the next two weeks, said Greg Carbin, head of the forecast operations branch at the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center.

“These areas have been unusually dry,” Carbin said. “In fact, much of California has had well below normal rainfall and precipitation for many months on end, which had led to the dramatic wildfire activity that we’ve seen as well.”

A group of fires known as the LNU Lightning Complex stretched across Napa County and surrounding areas starting in August, burning more than 360,000 acres. It was 100% contained by early October, but the charred terrain it left behind is more susceptible to rainfall runoff, according to the National Weather Service.

“If you have too much rain in an area that the vegetation has been burned off from wildfire activity, that can cause a problem with debris flow, mudslides and some flash flooding,” Carbin said.

Mountainous and hilly terrain could be vulnerable to flash flooding and landslides, particularly where there are burn scars — charred, barren areas scorched by wildfires. In 2018, at least 17 people died in mudslides in Montecito, in Southern California, after a storm hit hillsides that had been stripped of the vegetation in the Thomas Fire.

The weather systems affecting Central California are not out of the ordinary as the state receives the majority of its rainfall during the cooler months, particularly the period from January through March. But the forecast is notable for a region where rainfall and snowfall “have been so far below normal” in recent years, Carbin said. (Parts of Central California and the Sierra Nevada region are currently experiencing extreme and severe drought, according to the National Drought Mitigation Center.)

California’s 2020 “water year” — the 12-month period that ended on Sept. 30, 2020 — was rather dry for the state’s northern region, the state’s Department of Water Resources reported.

The Sierra Nevada can receive anywhere from about 70 inches of precipitation to more than 100 inches in an average year, Carbin said. According to the Western Regional Climate Center, the state’s North Central and North Coast regions received more than 50 inches of precipitation in 2017.

Typhoon Haishen on Sunday drew closer to Japan's southern mainland. According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), authorities urged evacuation for over 100,000 households in the southern region of Okinawa, Kagoshima, Kumamoto, and Nagasaki. Over 3,000 houses have witnessed power cuts in Okinawa and over 8,000 homes in Amamioshima, according to national broadcaster NHK. FDMA reported two injuries despite advising the highest levels of caution for a typhoon. "Areas where the typhoon passes are expected to see record high winds and waves," a meteorological official told a nationally televised news conference on Sunday. "I am urging everyone to take the utmost caution, follow local authorities' instructions and protect your own life. Once you enter an area of high wind, you may not be able to move to a safer place." The wind speed of the typhoon is forecasted to be up to 252 km (157 miles) per hour by Monday, the meteorological agency said. Typhoon Haishen follows Typhoon Maysak, which made landfall on the Korean peninsula on Thursday, leaving at least two dead and thousands temporarily without power. (Inputs from Reuters)

Heavy rain in Nepal triggered landslides on Monday that killed eight labourers at a construction site and two members of a family, taking the toll in floods and landslides to 177 since late May.

Elsewhere in South Asia, the annual rainy season brought more misery with at least 135 people killed in Bangladesh since late June in the longest-running floods there in more than two decades, while floods have killed nearly 120 people and displaced millions in the Indian states of Assam and Bihar.

Nepali government official Murari Wasti told Reuters that the labourers were sleeping in a tin-roofed shelter near the capital, Kathmandu, when the landslide hit.

"Rescuers dug through the mud and took out all eight bodies," Wasti said. One injured labourer had been taken to hospital.

A second landslide nearby killed a woman and her husband.

Wasti said 57 people were missing and 111 injured in floods or landslides caused by the May-September monsoon rains.

The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan has also been hit with four soldiers killed there last month while rescuing villagers trapped in floods, officials said.

The conditions have complicated the poor region's efforts to fight the novel coronavirus, especially in densely populated Bangladesh, which has reported 240,746 infections with 3,154 deaths.
