The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed the development of La Nina weather pattern for the third consecutive year in the Pacific, upping the risk of rain and floods in different parts of the world.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, a UN agency, it is for the first time in this century that La Niña has returned for three consecutive years.

"It is exceptional to have three consecutive years with a La Nina event," WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a statement.

La Niña weather pattern is one of the three phases of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO).

It refers to the unusual cooling of the tropical eastern Pacific. La Nina, which means The Little Girl in Spanish, represent periods of below-average sea surface temperatures across the east-central Equatorial Pacific.

Under this weather pattern, the atmospheric circulation across the tropical Pacific is set up so that warm waters to Australia's north-east and strong trade winds pump moisture into the atmosphere along Australia's east coast.

When the right systems come along, they then tap into that moisture, bringing about heavy rains and flooding.

The bureau, in its fortnightly update of Australia’s climate drivers, said that key atmospheric and oceanic indicators of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (Enso) showed “an established La Niña”.

“Tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures have been cooling since June and are now at La Niña thresholds,” the bureau said.

“Models indicate this La Niña event may peak during the spring and return to neutral conditions early in 2023,” it added.

Impacts of La Nina across the globe

La Nina tends to bring milder winters in Northern Europe, especially UK, and colder winters in southern and western Europe, leading to snow in the Mediterranean region. It reduces the number of autumnal hurricanes across Europe.

It is in the American continent where the extreme climate conditions due to La Nina are felt the most.

In the Pacific, stronger winds arrive along the equatorial region. While it leads to favourable conditions for hurricanes in the Caribbean and central Atlantic area. In various states of US, frequent tornados are observed.

In Australia, Indonesia and other parts of Asia, La Nina brings heavy rainfall and can even cause more lightning activity in the Gulf of Mexico and along the Gulf Coast and increase the number of hurricanes and tropical cyclones, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The condition is reversed in South America, where La Nina causes drought, especially in countries of Peru and Ecuador.

The situation is the same in East Africa as well. The fourth season of failed rains is currently causing one of the worst droughts East Africa has seen in decades.

According to the UN’s World Food Programme, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are on the brink of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, and up to 20 million people are at risk of severe hunger.

Heavy rains in New Zealand's northern and central regions eased after four days. The near-constant downpour has already forced hundreds of people from their homes. There were 100 new evacuations overnight.

Nelson, the city in the South Island of the country is the worst affected due to the rain. Hundreds of homes have been evacuated over the week. The lashing from rain has rendered some of the homes uninhabitable. In the North Island, towns have been cut off due to roads and homes being submerged under water.

"Things going forward look quite different from this past week," the Metservice weather forecaster said in a Twitter post. "Most of the rainfall activity is still mainly in the west, but with much lower accumulations."

Earlier, it had said warnings and watch alerts were lifted after rain eased in northern and central areas.

On Saturday, more evacuations took place in Nelson. Kieran McAnulty, the emergency minister thanked those who assisted in the rescue effort. However, McAnulty added that area's recovery would be a "long and difficult" process.
"States of emergency remain ... in Nelson-Tasman, Marlborough and West Coast," he said on Twitter.

There were about 100 new evacuations overnight, the New Zealand Herald said.

In the Tasman district neighbouring Nelson, a total of 508 homes had been evacuated, emergency authorities said, and the figure could grow.

"That looks set to increase even more," Nelson Tasman civil defence officials said on Facebook.

California, which accounts for a quarter of the world’s tomato output, is facing its worst crisis. Lack of adequate rainfall is forcing farmers to brace for a water crisis that’s undermining the crop cultivation.

As a result, the low production is having an impact on the prices of tomato-based products.

According to Bloomeberg, gains in tomato sauce and ketchup are overtaking the rise in US food inflation, which is at its highest in 43 years.

With weather agencies predicting hotter and drier conditions in the upcoming months, the outlook for farmers remains uncertain.

“We desperately need rain. We are getting to a point where we don’t have inventory left to keep fulfilling the market demand,” Mike Montna, head of the California Tomato Growers Association, was quoted as saying.

Moreover, the authorities have limited groundwater usage, and rising labour costs, fuel and fertilizer are making it difficult for producers to grow tomatoes.

“It’s real tough to grow a tomato crop right now,” Montna said. “On one side you have the drought impacting costs because you don’t have enough water to grow all your acres, and then you have the farm inflation side of it with fuel and fertilizer costs shooting up.”

Rick Blankenship, vice president of farming operations, Woolf Farming, said it now takes $4,800 an acre to grow and harvest a tomato crop compared with $2,800 a decade ago. Much of the rise has been witnessed in the last two years.

Data by the US Department of Agriculture indicated that the crop has been below the recent production peak of 14.4 million tons in 2015 for the past six years, and 2022 is continuing with the trend.

Weather updates today (July 11): Know about weather conditions in Amarnath, Mumbai, Himachal, Delhi and more

Climate change is affecting us all. There is an urgent need to address the issue facing humanity otherwise our very existence on the only planet we've got will be in jeopardy. In the latest sign that we are headed for a grim future, a study has found out that parts of Spain and Portugal are drier than they have been than in last 1200 years.

The drier climate has the potential to severely affect wine and Olive production in these two countries.

The Azores High is an area of high atmospheric pressure that moves clockwise over the Atlantic region. It is called "gatekeeper" for rainfall in Europe. The winter rain in Europe is caused by the Azores High. It sends westerly winds inwards into the continent and causes winter rain.

The study of this phenomenon was carried out by researchers in the United States and was published in journal Nature Geoscience.

The study has found that Azores High, the high-pressure system "has changed dramatically in the past century and that these changes in North Atlantic climate are unprecedented within the past millennium".

A climate model simulation was used in this study. The simulation had climate data of the last 1200 years fed to it. The simulation showed that high-pressure system began to grow in last 200 years as greenhouse gas emissions increased.

In 20th century, it expanded even more dramatically as climate change. The scientists have said that as Azores High expanded, western Meditarranean countries have become drier.

Authors of the study say that data trends point towards rainfall decreasing by as much as 10 to 20 per cent by the end of the century. This has the potential of making Iberian peninsula "some of the most vulnerable in Europe".

Parts of Europe are now drier than they have been in thousand years: Study

India's annual monsoon rainfall has finally arrived. It covered more than half of the country and conditions are for it to advance into central, northern and western regions this week, the weather department said on Monday. Monsoon will help people to get a relief from the scorching heat especially in Delhi NCR, as well as it will benefit farmers. Monsoon will accelerate the production of crops. Sowing of cotton, soybean, corn and paddy has lagged in key producing states, but could accelerate now, according to experts. The monsoon has covered all of southern and eastern India and most of the central state of Madhya Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement. "Monsoon has revived. This week many regions in southern and central India would get heavy rainfall", an IMD official said. According to a Reuters report, the monsoon which accounts for nearly 70 per cent of India's annual rainfall and is the lifeblood of its 2.7 trillion dollars agriculture-dependent economy arrived on the coast of southern Kerala state on May 29, two days ahead of usual. Its progress later stalled for over a week.

The India Meteorological Department confirmed the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in Karnataka on Tuesday while the government said it has already prepared a checklist to deal with emergencies. Karnataka is likely to witness “normal to above normal” rainfall, which is about 82 per cent. In the week ending June 14, the state recorded a 66 per cent shortage in rainfall it received just 14mm of rain as against a normal of 42mm.

Monsoon is very important for India, mainly because of its large agricultural dependence. However, Monsoon has started to slow down in some states, including Karnataka, which may lead to slowing down of the production of crops. Not only for agriculture, but Monsoon also helps people to get relief from the heat. Some areas are also experiencing floods due to heavy rains like Assam and even in Bangladesh. People hope that the weather remains pleasant and they can enjoy going out.

Weather update: Monsoon 2022 arrives in India, know about monsoon in your city

Monsoon-triggered torrential rains have caused massive flooding and landslide in northeastern states in India and Bangladesh, leaving more than 6 million people marooned and killing at least 18 people in both the countries, according to reports. The authorities say that the situation could get worse in the upcoming days.

More than 3 million people were affected in India’s Assam state, where at least 63 people have lost their lives so far, including eight reported dead on Saturday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called up Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take stock of the situation. The CM also visited a few relief camps sheltering affected people in Kamrup and Darrang districts.

The toll in the current second wave of floods and landslides in the state has increased to 63 as two deaths each were reported from Barpeta and Karimganj while one each died in Darrang, Hailakandi, Nalbari and Sonitpur districts.

Speaking to media persons, Sarma said that the district administration is ready to face any exigency and to help the flood-affected people.

''The administration has been directed to ensure relief supplies and evacuate people from vulnerable areas to relief camps. The Army is ready to provide assistance and the deputy commissioners have been asked to take their help when required. NDRF and SDRF personnel are evacuating affected people to safer places,'' he said.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) bulletin on Saturday stated that the river Kopili is flowing above 'High Flood Level' in Nagaon district, while other rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Jia-Bharali, Puthimari, Pagladia, Manas, Beki, Barak and Kushiara are flowing above the danger level at different places.

A population of over 3.1 million have been affected in 32 districts, according to a report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Saturday.

In Tripura state, over 10,000 people have been left homeless due to inundation since Friday but there is no report of any human casualty, according to reports.

Meghalaya's Mawsynram and Cherrapunji also received its highest rainfall since 1940.

In neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, water from river Subansiri has submerged a dam that was under construction for a hydroelectric power project, news agency PTI reported.

In Bangladesh, at least 15 people have been killed in eight districts due to lightning strikes since Friday, and four people were killed in landslides, police officials said.

The flooding in Bangladesh, described by a government expert as potentially the country`s worst since 2004, was exacerbated by the runoff from heavy rain across Indian mountains. Rain continued on Saturday, with more forecast over the next two days.

"Much of the country`s northeast is underwater and the situation is getting worse as heavy downpour continues," Reuters news agency quoted Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, chief administrator of Bangladesh’s Sylhet region.

Bangladesh and India have experienced increasing extreme weather in recent years, causing large-scale damage. Environmentalists warn climate change could lead to more disasters, especially in low-lying and densely populated Bangladesh.

The worst-hit Sunamganj district in Bangladesh is almost disconnected from the rest of the country, Hossain told Reuters, adding that authorities helped by the army were focused on rescuing those trapped and distributing relief.

"There is a shortage of boats, which makes it harder to move people to safer places," he said. "Today the navy is joining us in rescue efforts."
