The marquee India vs. Pakistan clash in the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2023 has been called off on Sunday due to rain. The reserve day, added especially for this game, will now come into action as the contest will resume on Monday, with India beginning the day at 24.1 overs.

For the second time in a row, India-Pakistan game got interrupted by rain, as earlier during the Group Stage match on September 2 in Kandy, the game suffered a similar fate, disappointing millions of cricket fans all across. However, considering the peak monsoon season in Sri Lanka, especially in the capital city, the ACC, in coordination with the PCB – the original host of the tournament and the BCCI, decided to add a reserve day for the India-Pakistan Super Four tie in Colombo.

As everyone thought, the rain again played a spoilsport as the game got called off on Sunday. With no match possible on the given day, the reserve day was activated, and now both teams will resume proceedings on the next day at the same venue. India, who batted first after losing the toss, was on top of Pakistan, scoring 147 for two in 24.1 overs.

Captain Rohit Sharma and his fellow opener Shubman Gill hit respective fifties, while Virat Kohli (8*) and returning KL Rahul (17*) were at the crease when the game got paused due to rain.

Rain washes away thrill in Colombo

Eight days after arch-rivals faced off for the first time since that epic clash in Melbourne last year, the tensions were high as the Indian batters took on the best bowling line-up in the tournament for the second straight time. After what they had gone through during the first clash, getting reduced to 66 for four at one stage, the Indian openers upped the ante and unlocked the counter-attack strategy to gain an early advantage.

Taking down Shaheen Afridi was their best trick, but a tight spell from Naseem Shah kept them on bay inside the Powerplay. Rohit changed gears when Shadab was introduced to the attack, taking him to the cleaners.

Although both stitched a 121-run stand for the first wicket, Rohit and Gill returned to the pavilion in consecutive overs.

Virat Kohli looked composed, while KL Rahul didn’t disappoint on his first India outing in several months.

Meanwhile, with both teams now aware of the situation at hand, changing strategies before cricket resumes on Monday can benefit both.

The cricketing world cannot wait for the blockbuster game between two arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, to get underway in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 on Saturday, September 2. However, there is a threat that looms over this blockbuster clash. The latest reports suggest thunderstorms could play a spoilsport during the marquee clash.

Considering it’s been raining in Kandy for the past two days and the forecast on D-day - September 2, predicts a 90% rain possibility, the India vs. Pakistan game could get washed out.

Since these Asian giants face each other only in ICC-related tournaments and the Asia Cup, a possible washout here would be a disaster for cricket fans from all over.

Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka, especially in Pallekele, Kandy, the board avoids scheduling matches during the August-September window because of monsoon; however, with the BCCI refusing to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023, Sri Lanka got roped in as an additional host at the last moment. It meant selected grounds got slated to host several games during the tournament, with India-Pakistan penned for September 2 in Pallekele.

Looking into history, Pallekele, in the past, has hosted 33 ODIs, with only three matches played during the monsoon season.

While Pakistan will host only four matches, Sri Lanka will host the remaining nine games, including all India matches and the final on September 17.

Pakistan begin Asia Cup in dominant fashion

With all eyes on the India-Pakistan match on September 2, the Men in Green began their six-team tournament campaign on a high by beating minnows Nepal by a whopping 238 runs. Captain Babar Azam and middle-order batter Iftikhar Ahmed scored respective centuries.

Shadab Khan returned with four scalps, while seamers Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf picked two wickets each.

Pakistan, India and Nepal were drawn in Group A.

India look to settle middle-order debate ahead of marquee clash

The Indian Cricket Team has an issue at hand – the middle-order issue, which further got into the limelight after returning makeshift keeper-batter KL Rahul got ruled out of the first two clashes, meaning he will miss India’s opening game of Asia Cup 2023 against Pakistan.

In his absence, Ishan Kishan is sure to play in the XI, as Sanju Samson, another keeper-batter, is part of the travelling reserves and hasn’t been added to the main squad yet.

With Kishan getting roped in, it would be interesting to see if India plays him in the top or middle-order, or if he will be used as a floater, depending on the match situation.

China is currently battling with record rainfall with the capital city Beijing and northern parts of the country drowning in floods. Typhoon Doksuri, which tore through the Pacific last week, still continues to wreak havoc triggering thousands of evacuations.

On Tuesday, when the intense rainfall eventually halted, most parts of the Chinese capital were spared, but the water was directed elsewhere.

This move by the government further flooded the neighbouring city of Zhuozhou in Hebei, which had been making extensive efforts to fight its own intense flood situation after a levee broke and a local river overflowed.

Slovenian army deploys rubber boats, helicopters for evacuation

China is currently battling with record rainfall with the capital city Beijing and northern parts of the country drowning in floods. Typhoon Doksuri, which tore through the Pacific last week, still continues to wreak havoc triggering thousands of evacuations.

The situation is so intense in the second most populous country in the world that the weather service officials released a statement on Tuesday saying that the Chinese capital Beijing had received the "heaviest rainfall in over 140 years", since the inception of record-keeping.

"The maximum value of rainfall recorded during this storm, which was 744.8 millimetres, occurred at the Wangjiayuan Reservoir in Changping," the Beijing Meteorological Service said.

The torrential rains, up until Tuesday (August 1), had claimed the lives of at least 20 people while 27 people were still missing.

As per reports, more than 52,000 people have been evacuated from Beijing and moved to safer areas since the extreme rains battered the city in late July.

In the Fangshan district, power to some 60,000 homes was knocked out.

Doksuri, which is the most powerful typhoon to hit China this year and the second-strongest to hit the southeastern province of Fujian since 2016, has prompted the authorities to use a flood storage reservoir in Beijing for the first time since it was first built, over 25 years ago, after the rivers in the country swelled up to record levels.

What caused the extreme downpour?

As per Chinese meteorologists, besides the remnants of Doksuri, warm and humid air-flows and water vapour brought by Typhoon Khanun slowly moving in the Western Pacific also created the conditions for the heavy rains.

The meteorologists say that as the residual circulation of Doksuri's rain clouds headed north, a subtropical and continental high-pressure system in the atmosphere also barricaded their north and eastward passage, which further lead to the continuing conjunction of water vapour that acted like a dam storing the water.

Another factor that contributed to the extreme weather condition was the topographic features. As large amounts of vapour gathered in northern China, it was then lifted up by a low-altitude wind, shifting precipitation east of the Taihang mountain range, where the worst-hit areas, including Beijing's Fangshan and Mentougou districts, are located.

Meanwhile, a series of convective clouds gathered over the area, which lead to heavy rainfall for a lengthy period of time, further worsening the damage and problematising rescue operations.

The damage caused by rains

In the urban areas of the capital city of Beijing, several roads were flooded which forced the closure of parks and tourist spots.

The city's two major airports witnessed delays or cancellations of flights. Some subway lines and trains were also suspended.

The impact of rainfall was more evident in the city's western suburbs. In Mentougou and Fangshan districts, raging water rushed down roads, sweeping away cars. Villages in mountainous areas were completely cut off due to the extreme weather situation which further prompted the authorities to deploy helicopters to drop off food, water and emergency supplies.

Hebei's Zhuozhou, a city with more than 600,000 people to the southwest of Beijing, was half-immersed, with about 134,000 residents affected and one-sixth of the city's population evacuated.

Similar weather events in the past

The extreme weather conditions witnessed by Beijing currently are unusual for its surroundings. Previously, the Chinese capital has observed at least 12 incidences of significant rain brought by typhoons since authorities started keeping records, as per the state media.

Typhoon Haitang and Ampil both spilled over 100mm of rain on Beijing in the years 2017 and 2018 respectively. One of the most significant rain events was caused by Typhoon Wanda in the year 1956, which discharged more than 400mm of precipitation in the densely populated city.

On Friday (August 4), China released a statement saying that natural disasters had claimed the lives of at least 147 people, with several missing in the month of July after record rainfall hit the country's capital. China's Ministry of Emergency Management said that 142 of the deaths or disappearances recorded in the month of July were caused by flooding or geological disasters. The remaining five deaths or disappearances were due to other natural disasters such as drought. Extreme rainfall According to reports, since Saturday, the amount of rainfall that has been pouring has breached many local meteorological records. A precipitation reading of 744.8mm (29.3 inches) was recorded by a reservoir in Beijing's Changping district between Saturday and Wednesday, which is the most to be logged in the city in over 140 years. The previous record of 609mm was set in the year 1891. In Hebei, 1,003mm of rain was recorded by a local weather station for a three-day period, i.e. from Saturday to Monday. Such an amount is usually witnessed over a year and a half. Also read: Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, wife Sophie announce separation after 18 years of marriage What caused the extreme downpour? The damage caused by rains In the urban areas of the capital city of Beijing, several roads were flooded which forced the closure of parks and tourist spots. Similar weather events in the past The extreme weather conditions witnessed by Beijing currently are unusual for its surroundings. The rainy weather heavily affected IndiGo's operations, as around 55 per cent of its flights got delayed. Air India also delayed 27 flights on Sunday. According to the aviation analytics firm Ciruium, around 1,155 commercial passenger flights were scheduled from the Delhi airport on Sunday. However, the affected airlines, like IndiGo, Vistara, Air India, SpiceJet, and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), did not state anything about the delays or cancellations. Torrential rains severely affected several parts of north India on Sunday. According to the reports, at least 15 people died in landslides and other rain-related accidents. Most rivers in north India, including Yamuna in Delhi, were in spate. Heavy showers affected all forms of commuting, including airways, roadways, and railways. Civic systems were unable to hold in the face of record rains. Roads and residential areas of Delhi and various other north Indian cities were submerged in knee-deep waters. On July 4, Tuesday, three flights were diverted from the Delhi airport to Lucknow due to the bad weather. Meanwhile, Vistara introduced a 'Monsoon Sale' for a limited period. The airline will provide domestic flights starting from ₹1,499 and international flights from ₹11,799. It will cover travel dates from July 2023 to March 2024 (terms and conditions apply). Delhi: Rains cause severe damage to property Besides flight delays and inundated roads, torrential rains caused heavy damage to life and property. In India's national capital Delhi, 15 houses collapsed, leaving two dead and seven injured. Delhi Fire Service Director Atul Garg told ANI news agency that they received 15 calls regarding house collapse incidents due to heavy and extensive waterlogging. "We received 15 such calls, the most in a single day. Some old, decrepit houses and some under-construction buildings couldn't sustain the heavy rainfall and collapsed. Further, on account of severe waterlogging, we had trouble reaching the spot," Garg told ANI. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Torrential rain in southwest Japan claimed the lives of at least two people, on Monday, with fears that the death toll could rise as several residents were asked to evacuate their houses.

A week of steady rain in the country has prompted the rivers to burst their banks and waterlogged earth to break into deadly landslides, including one that claimed the life of a 77-year-old woman.

As per the news agency AFP, a landslide in Kurume city, Fukuoka region, engulfed 10 people. Nine out of those survived, but a local man, aged around 70, lost his life in the incident, said the city's disaster management official.

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun and national broadcaster NHK, separately a male body was also found in Kurume, next to rice fields near a flooded river.

The Yomiuri said that in Hirokawa town in Fukuoka, the body of an elderly male was found inside a flooded vehicle trapped in an irrigation channel.

According to the officials, another woman was feared dead after she was last seen sticking to a car in rising floodwaters in the neighbouring Oita region.

By Monday afternoon, rain in the region slowed or stopped. But earlier in the day, more than 420,000 people were put under a top-level evacuation warning stating: "Your life is in danger, you need to take action immediately."

Around two million more in Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Saga, Yamaguchi and Oita were under a lower-level warning, urging them to evacuate if they were in hazardous areas.

Japan has five levels of evacuation orders, but people cannot be forced to leave their homes.

"Rain and wind gusts were very, very strong. There was lightning. It was so horrible," Takashi Onizuka, 62, of Tachiarai town near Kurume in Fukuoka told AFP.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) released a statement saying that the heavy downpours risked flooding and landslides across Fukuoka and Oita.

"This is the heaviest rain ever experienced" by the region, Satoshi Sugimoto of JMA's forecast division told reporters.

"The situation is such that lives are in danger and safety must be secured," he added.

Japan PM Fumio Kishida's office releases statement

The prime minister's office said a task force had been set up in order to coordinate a response to the heavy rains.

"We have received reports that several rivers have flooded... and that landslides have occurred in various parts" of the country, top government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters.

"The government is doing its best to get a complete picture of the damage and taking measures under a policy of 'people's lives first'," he added.

He warned torrential rain was forecast across much of the country on Tuesday.

"If you feel your life is in danger, even just a little, don't hesitate to act," he said.

According to the officials, in Fukuoka's Asakura City, the rain was thought to have reached a peak point but there were still fears about flooding.

According to scientists, climate change is heightening the risk of heavy rain in Japan and elsewhere, because a warmer atmosphere holds more water.

The weather agency said it had already been raining for more than a week in the region.

"The area is very wet due to intermittent rainfall for over a week," Yoshiyuki Toyoguchi, land ministry official in charge of rivers, told reporters.

At least seven people died as incessant rains battered Pakistan’s Lahore city on Wednesday, breaking a 30-year record.

The city received 291mm of rain, and over a dozen areas recorded more than 200mm of rain, Commissioner Lahore Mohammad Ali Randhawa said, Geo News reported.

Randhawa said that this is the first time that a large amount of rainfall is being witnessed in such a short amount of time, something that has not been seen for the past 30 years. He attributed the sudden downpours to climate change and strong monsoons.

Last year, 238mm of rainfall was recorded while 288mm was received in 2018, he said.

"Three people were electrocuted, two died after roofs collapsed, and a child drowned after rainwater accumulated," Punjab interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi told journalists in Lahore.

In an update on his official Twitter handle, the interim CM said the death toll had risen to seven.

Lahore to witness another bout of rain

He said that the record-breaking rain has caused flooding in urban areas and the canals are also overflowing.

“We have dispatched teams across the city to clear main roads and drain water from submerged areas.”

“All the cabinet members and administration are in the field to clear the water. I am also monitoring the situation in the field and getting updates from all over Lahore continuously,” the chief minister said as he visited the city to oversee relief operations.

The interim CM said that the city will likely witness another spell of rain at 9 pm and added that the authorities were taking appropriate measures to tackle any weather-related incidents.

The Met Office also predicted that intermittent showers would continue to batter Lahore for the next 24 hours.

The heavy downpour is in line with the predictions of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) last week which warned that moist currents from the Arabian Sea would penetrate the upper parts of the country, and a westerly wave was also likely to enter the upper parts of the country on Monday, causing heavy rainfall from July 4 to 7 across the country.

The Met officials have issued a warning of high-level flooding in the Chenab River due to heavy downpours.

It also said that the upper catchments of Rivers Sutlej and Ravi could also swell due to widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Koh Samui, a popular tourist destination located off the east coast of Thailand is facing an acute water shortage. Located in the Chumphon archipelago, authorities are working overtime to ensure that the island, famous for its white sandy beaches, scenic temples and luxury resorts - does not become a 'disaster zone'.

Lack of rain and a large influx of tourists are being dubbed as the primary reasons for the precarious situation. Sutham Samthong, a deputy mayor of Koh Samui has urged the public to use supplies sparingly to get through the difficult period.

“I would like to ask people to save water, use it sparingly. If we help each other, we can go through this,” said Samthong.

“We are not complacent. We are trying to solve the situation. We don’t want the provincial or upper [administration] to announce that Koh Samui is a disaster zone,” he added.

There has been a drastic reduction in the water levels of the Phru Na Muang and Phru Krajud reservoirs and the Hin Lard waterfall, which has contributed to the current predicament. If the water supplies are not sorted quickly, the island only has enough local freshwater supplies for residents for just 30 days.

Currently, the locals are being forced to shell out as much as 250 to 300 baht ($7-$8.5) for about 2,000 litres of water for daily use.

Samthong states that the island needs 30,000 cubic metres of water a day. The authorities are working to bring 24,000 cubic metres through an underwater pipeline from Surat Thani on the mainland, while reservoir supplies would be used for the remaining amount. An additional 30,000 cubic metres is also expected to be brought in the boost the supplies, according to Provincial Waterworks Authority.

Despite authorities fetching water from different sources, the problems could compound due to the El Nino phenomenon, which may lead to even less rain for the island.

The tourist spot has welcomed over one million foreign tourists in the past five months. The water supply crunch could put the entire hospitality industry in jeopardy which had only recently started to recoup the losses suffered during the pandemic.

Popular Thai island Koh Samui facing existential crisis as water runs out

A new study suggests, high-altitude regions will get more extreme rain than previously thought, making floods and landslides more likely.

Climate change is turning snow to rain, raising risk of floods

A recent study has exposed the alarming consequences of climate change with the findings suggesting that as the planet heats up it will result in extreme precipitation with snowfall turning into rain in high-altitude regions, a phenomenon which will in turn increase the risk of landslides and floods, media reports said.

The study was published in the journal Nature and reveals how mountain regions will experience more intense rainfall than previously anticipated in earlier research. This heightened precipitation poses greater risks, such as floods, landslides, and soil erosion, in comparison to the risk of snowfall.

Climate change impact

While scientists have studied the overall increase in extreme precipitation due to climate change, the study breaks down the proportion of extreme precipitation that falls as snow versus rain. The distinction is crucial because rain tends to have more adverse effects on human lives.

The study, led by Mohammed Ombadi, an environmental data scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the US state of California, found that for every one degree Celsius increase in global temperature, higher elevations can expect a 15 percent rise in extreme rainfall.

This increase is nearly double what climate scientists had previously estimated for both rain and snow combined. It specifically applies to regions above approximately 2,000 meters or 6,500 feet in elevation, as per media reports.

Implications for human populations

Approximately one-quarter of the global population resides in mountain regions or directly downstream from them. While landslides mainly affect local areas, floods have more widespread impacts on people downstream.

Additionally, soil erosion can undermine agricultural lands, natural ecosystems, and exacerbate the risks of floods and landslides. These threats add to the challenges posed by melting glaciers in the same mountain ranges and river valleys.

Analysing historical data and climate projections

Dr. Ombadi and his colleagues analysed historical data from 1950 to 2019, along with climate change projections till 21st century. They focused on temperate and Arctic regions in the Northern Hemisphere, as data from the tropics and the Southern Hemisphere were limited. Their modeling of various global warming scenarios revealed a consistent increase in extreme rainfall for each degree of warming.

The impact of elevation on rainfall increase

The researchers discovered that the higher the elevation, the greater the increase in extreme rainfall. Unlike the relationship between rising temperatures and precipitation, this change wasn't linear.

They observed a larger increase in rainfall as they analysed higher elevations. Additionally, different mountain ranges in the Northern Hemisphere exhibited slight variations in the risk of extreme rainfall, which researchers are still working to understand.
