India's T20 skipper Rohit Sharma, who is all set to embark upon a new journey in his cricketing career, recalled treasured memories of his interaction with the newly-appointed head coach of the Indian cricket team, Rahul Dravid.&nbsp;

Swashbuckling batter Rohit, who was named the captain of India's T20 side after Virat Kohli stepped down from the post citing workload management, will lead the team against New Zealand in a three-match T20I home series, which is scheduled to kick start from Wednesday (November 17).&nbsp;

Ahead of India's first T20I match against New Zealand, scheduled to be played at Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Rohit and Dravid got an opportunity to talk about one of their memorable interaction.&nbsp;

Rohit made his debut against Ireland in an ODI in 2007 and the incident they mentioned is also from the same series as Dravid, during the pre-match press conference, said, "We were talking about it yesterday on the bus. I guess time flies, doesn't it? I actually remember Rohit even before the Ireland series when we were playing a challenger in Madras."

"We all knew that Rohit was going to be special. We could just see that he was a very special talent. That I would so many years later be working with him that I never thought about or envisaged... but honestly, the way he has grown as a leader, as a person over these last 14 years now. What he's achieved both as an India player and as a leader for the Mumbai Indians has been phenomenal," he added.

"Having to carry the legacy of obviously Mumbai cricket and Indian cricket is not an easy one and he's done it with a lot of grace and class," Dravid added. &nbsp;

Rohit Sharma mentioned what had happened as he said: "It was way back in 2007 when I was selected, but the first time I had the opportunity to interact with him was in Bangalore at a camp. It was a very brief chat and I was actually kind of very nervous and I never used to talk so much even with my age group people so leave alone these guys at that point," Rohit said.

"So, I was just quietly doing my things and getting a move on with my game. But yeah, in Ireland the first time when he came and told me that you will be playing this game. I was over the moon that, obviously felt like a dream to be part of the dressing room. It's been a long way since then. I have cherished all the moments that I've spent playing for India and also for my franchise, Mumbai Indians. And we look forward to many more," Rohit added.&nbsp;

Team India's new head coach Rahul Dravid has asserted he will be prioritising players' mental health and workload management as he begins his stint with the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand. Dravid said he is not looking at building different teams for different formats but will rather effectively manage the workload of the players to ensure they are fresh for each major tournament.

Dravid has replaced Ravi Shastri at the helm of affairs for Team India after their disappointing exit from the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2021. India failed to qualify for the semi-finals as they bowed out of the T20 World Cup from the group stages after two losses and three wins in their first five matches.

The Indian team has picked up some new faces in the T20I squad for the New Zealand series that gets underway from Tuesday (November 17) but the management is not looking for a major overhaul. The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel and Venkatesh Iyer have been roped in after their brilliant performances in the IPL while Deepak Chahar, Shreyas Iyer and Yuzvendra Chahal among others have been recalled to the squad which will be led by newly-appointed T20I skipper Rohit Sharma.

Dravid said while there will be no separate teams for each format, he will always be in conversation with players to ensure their physical and mental being is taken care of.

"So we are not at that level, looking at separate teams for separate formats. Of course, there are certain players who only play a particular format. We need to have conversations with the players. Players' physical and mental health is the most important thing in these times. I will always be in conversation with them. The likes of head coach Ravi Shastri, pacer Jasprit Bumrah and others had pointed out how playing excessive cricket and not getting a deserved break between IPL 2021 and T20 World Cup was one of the reasons behind India's poor show in the tournament.

Echoing their sentiments, Dravid said players are not machines and workload management is an important aspect of cricket.

"Workload management is an important aspect of cricket. We see that in football as well. The mental and physical well-being of players will be a priority. We need to do a balancing act, have to work towards having players fit for the big tournaments," said the legendary batter.

India vs New Zealand 1st T20I Preview: Men in Blue look for 'fresh T20 template' in Rohit-Dravid era

Rahul Dravid has taken over as the new head coach of the Indian men's cricket team and is all set for his first major assignment with the Men in Blue. India will take on New Zealand in a three-match T20I series at home starting from November 17 (Wednesday) which is all set to be their first big challenge under Dravid's guidance.

While Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the captain of the T20I side after Virat Kohli stepped down as captain in the shortest format, KL Rahul will be his deputy. The newly-appointed vice-captain of the Indian T20I side said he has been fortunate enough to know Dravid for a long time and is looking forward to working with him.

Rahul, who plays for Karnataka in the domestic circuit and has been on India A tours in the past, lauded Dravid for being a team man and creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable. He also said Dravid has a great understanding of the game and can help the current members of the Indian team become better cricketers in the future.

India legend Rahul Dravid has finally applied for the post of head coach of the Indian men's cricket team. Dravid is considered as one of the front runners to replace Ravi Shastri at the helm after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 in Dubai. Shastri's contract with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will expire after the showpiece event in UAE and Oman.

Dravid is expected to bring in his own backroom staff once he takes over from Shastri, however, current batting coach Vikram Rathour will retain his position and remain in charge as the batting coach, as per ANI's source.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly on Friday (October 22) confirmed that Rahul Dravid's appointment as the new head coach of the Indian men's cricket team is not imminent yet. Ganguly revealed Dravid has asked for some time to decide whether he wants to replace Ravi Shastri or not and that there is no confirmation on his appointment yet.

Recently reports had stated that Dravid had agreed to become the new head coach of the Indian cricket team and will take over from Shastri, whose contract is set to expire post the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE and Oman. However, Ganguly said Dravid, who had earlier said he was not interested in the role, is yet to make his final call.

Dravid is currently the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is expected to step down from the post if he decides to apply for the India head coach position. Ganguly said the batting legend, who has previously coached the India A and India U-19 teams, will apply if he wants to.
