<p>According to the officials, the incident took place at 11:40 am (local time) and the highway was closed off till 12:40 pm (local time). Meanwhile, the state highway police said that the accident took place on the expressway stretch between Lonavala and Khandala and that the tanker was heading towards Pune.</p>

<p>Currently, the officials are still trying to ascertain details of the ownership and operation of the tanker which exploded on the 94-kilometre-long expressway. Motorists were reported to have sustained injuries after the tanker caught on fire after the accident which led fiery balls of the chemical to fall on the vehicles below.</p>

<p>According to the Deputy Superintendent of Police Lonavla sub-division, Satya Sai Karthik, four people were killed while three others were "severely injured" due to the accident. It was previously also reported that the driver of the tanker was among those killed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Officials also said that four vehicles were also burned, including the tanker. Highway Safety Patrol, Pune in-charge Lata Phad said speaking about the incident the fire engulfed the tanker carrying chemicals "in which truck driver was killed and the cleaner was injured. Another woman passing under the bridge was also injured".</p>

<p>"We initially thought that it was an oil tanker. The probe has now revealed that it was carrying methanol. Of the four people who died, one was in the tanker cabin and the rest were in vehicles passing below the bridge," said Inspector Sitaram Dubal, in charge of Lonavala police station. He added, "Of the three injured, two were in the tanker cabin and one was on a vehicle below."</p>

<p>Emergency response teams from Highway Safety Patrol, Pune Disaster Management Cell, and fire brigades from Lonavala and Khopoli municipal councils were said to be on the scene, while the Indian Navy’s Lonavala-based training facility INS Shivaji also launched a relief operation. Traffic on both sides of the highway was closed for an hour or so after the accident while the officials said small vehicles were diverted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the accident "very unfortunate" and took to social media and wrote, "Three other persons were injured in the accident and are being treated in a local hospital. I pray for their betterment." Those injured have reportedly been taken to Pavana Hospital in Somatane Phata in Pune for further treatment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Emergency response teams from the state police force, highway patrol, INS Shivaji, fire brigade are at the spot and now the fire is under control. Traffic has been restored on one side, and the other side will also start soon. The state government is closely monitoring the situation," said the deputy CM, on Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The under-construction Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) will be India's longest sea bridge upon completion. It will also be the first sea bridge in India to have an Open Road Tolling (ORT) system. This means commuters will not need to slow down to pay toll charges.</p>

<p>MTHL is being built at a cost of more than USD 2 billion. When completed, the bridge will cater to about 70,000&nbsp;vehicles. Media reports say that 95 per cent of the work has been completed and the bridge will be ready before the year ends.</p>

<p>"Work on structures is almost complete. Tomorrow evening, at an event, we are going to connect the bridge to the mainland. The remaining work -- road laying, electrical, intelligent transport system (electronic tolling) -- will be done after the event. It is possible to achieve the target we set two years ago, to finish by December end this year," said SVR Srinivas, the commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Increased connectivity</strong></h2>

<p>This bridge will connect Mumbai and its satellite city Navi Mumbai. The commute time will just be 12 to 15 minutes. This is a significant decrease from the several hours it takes today. The bridge will connect Mumbai to the mainland.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media reports said that Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will visit the site on Wednesday evening.</p>

<p>A major road accident was reported on the Pune-Bengaluru highway in Pune Sunday night, injuring at least 30 people and resulting in a 48-vehicle pileup. According to local media, the brakes of an oil tanker failed near Navale bridge, before it rammed into several vehicles on the road.</p>

<p>The collision ended up spilling oil on the highway, making the road slippery and causing other vehicles to crash into the pileup. &nbsp;Rescue teams from the Pune Fire Brigade and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority were rushed to the spot immediately.</p>

<p>India Today reported that the Navale bridge area is prone to accidents due to the high slope of the road and the high speed of vehicles. Another incident occurred in the area on Friday where a speeding vehicle ran over a woman, resulting in her death.</p>

<p>News agencies reported that there are multiple damaged automobiles at the scene, where authorities are carrying out rescue operations including members of the fire department, police officers, and bystanders. NDTV reported that the vehicle pileup has caused massive traffic congestion on the road, with jams over 2 kilometres long being reported.</p>

<p>Five people, including two Indian Army soldiers, have been given a new lease of life after the organs of a young brain-dead woman were used for transplant. Reportedly, the woman was brought to Command Hospital Southern Command, Pune after suffering an unfortunate accident.</p>

<p>However, the doctors, after observation stated that there were no signs of life present. The family of the woman consulted the transplant team at the hospital and decided to donate the organs to patients in dire need.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Soon enough, the zonal transplant coordination centre (ZTCC) and Army Organ Retrieval and Transplant Authority (AORTA) were alerted about the organs. Kidneys were transplanted into the two soldiers while the liver was transplanted to a patient at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune.</p>

<p>Indian Army's Public Relations Office (PRO), Pune informed, “All the necessary clearances were made, later, the transplant team at Command Hospital Southern Command was immediately activated and the alerts were also sent to the Zonal transplant coordination centre (ZTCC) and Army Organ Retrieval and Transplant Authority (AORTA).”</p>

<p>Earlier in the day, Bajaj's mortal remains were kept at his residence in Akurdi near Pune for the last 'darshan'.</p>

<p>This work was led by Surajit Mondal, a PhD student working under the supervision of Professor Divya Oberoi, a faculty member at NCRA, along with Dr. Atul Mohan, his former student at NCRA, now at the Rosseland Centre for Solar Physics, Norway.</p>

<p>They have identified smoking guns for these small magnetic explosions and hence the first-ever evidence for their existence in explaining the long-pending coronal heating problem.</p>

<p>In their journey to unravel this mystery, scientists have already figured out that the extra energy heating up the corona must be coming from the magnetic fields of the Sun; but the methodology is not known yet.</p>

<p>The strength of the magnetic fields vary a lot from one place on the surface of the Sun to another, by more than a factor of 1,000, but the corona is hot everywhere.</p>

<p>So, this heating process has to work all over the corona, even in regions of weak magnetic fields. Until now the process of how this magnetic energy is deposited in the corona had remained a mystery.</p>

<p>"What made this breakthrough possible is the availability of data from a new technology instrument, the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), and the work which we have been doing for the past few years at NCRA to build the techniques and tools to make the most sensitive solar radio images from this data. The very weak radio flashes we have discovered are about 100 times weaker than the weakest bursts reported till now," said Professor Oberoi.</p>

<p>Surajit Mondal, the lead author of this work said, "What makes this really exciting is that these flashes are present everywhere on the Sun and at all times, including in the regions of weak magnetic fields, the so-called `quiet Sun` regions."</p>

<p>"Our preliminary estimates suggest that these tiny magnetic explosions should collectively have enough energy to heat the corona, which is exactly what is needed for solving the coronal heating problem," Dr. Mohan added.</p>

<p>"With this work, we have the strongest evidence till date that these tiny explosions, originally referred to as nanoflares in Professor Parker`s theory in 1988, can indeed be heating up the corona. It is just that they have turned out to be more than 1,000 times weaker than his prediction and it took us a long time to find them. This is an excellent example of how progress in technology enables progress in science," concluded Professor Oberoi.</p>

<p>The Sun is the brightest object in the sky and has been studied for hundreds of years. But it continues to hide some secrets which scientists from across the world are working hard to unlock. We all know that the visible Sun is extremely hot, at a temperature of about 5,500 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p>Surprisingly, on top of this sits a layer of gas which is at a temperature of almost two million degrees, over 300 times hotter than the surface of the Sun! We can get a glimpse of this layer of the gas during a total solar eclipse, called the corona because it looks like a crown.</p>

<p>What heats up the corona to two million degrees is one of the most challenging puzzles about the Sun and a reasonable answer has not been found till date.It is a fact that as we get closer to a source of heat, it becomes hotter. On the Sun, the source of heat is deep inside it. So, how is it that on top of the very hot surface of the Sun, there is a layer which is 300 times hotter? One efficient way of extracting this energy from the magnetic fields involves numerous tiny explosions taking place all over the Sun, all the time.</p>

<p>Individually these explosions are too weak, but collectively they have sufficient energy to heat the entire corona due to sheer numbers. Many attempts have been made to look for X-rays and ultraviolet light emitted by these explosions but none have been successful.It was concluded that if they exist, these tiny explosions were too weak to be detected by even the best instruments available today. These explosions are also expected to give rise to tiny flashes of radio lights, but till now there were no telescopes sensitive enough to detect them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Following the Supreme Court directives to states and Union territories to set up a panel to consider the release of prisoners on parole to avoid overcrowding in jails to check the spread of coronavirus, the state government had said that around 11,000 prisoners in Maharashtra, whose sentence period is less than seven years, would be released temporarily.</p>

<p>"The pre-lockdown population in the 60 prisons across the state was over 35,000 and so far we have released over 7,200 inmates temporarily to decongest the jails," an official from the prisons department told PTI.</p>

<p>In all, around 17,000 jail inmates would be released on temporary bail or parole, he said.</p>

<p>A high-powered committee appointed by the state government recently decided to release 50 per cent prisoners from various jails across the states and this figure is around 17,000, he said.</p>

<p>The committee's decision came after over 100 inmates and staff of central Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail tested positive for COVID-19.</p>

<p>The pre-lockdown population of Arthur Road Jail was 2300, of which around 700 prisoners were released, he said. There are 1572 inmates in the jail now, he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All accused have been booked under Section 302 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).</p>

<p>Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the people killed and also ordered an inquiry.</p>

<p>A three-member team has been formed to probe the wall collapse incident. Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil also announced that the NDRF will give compensation of Rs 4 lakh to families of 15 Bihar-based workers who lost their lives.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Bihar government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for kin of the victims and Rs 50,000 for the injured who hail from the state.</p>
