"It's my belief that this is a humanitarian issue -- and as such, it demands a multi-stakeholder response from advocacy voices, members of the media, academic researchers, and both government and civil society leaders," he added.

The prince is likely to bring his own experiences of media coverage of his life to the commission.

Harry's father, Prince Charles, made his first public appearance today. He was asked about the interview. He did not say anything. You can walk away from a question. Even the British prime minister couldn't avoid the subject. He chose to defend the queen's role, in a public statement. As for the rest, all other matters to do with the royal family, I've spent a long time now not commenting on royal family matters and I don't intend to depart from that today," Boris Johnson said. All of this is happening over one interview. A former royal couple chose to reveal their family feud. Some have called them brave. Others say they're just attention seekers. Whatever they are, they're at the centre of a storm now. They may have wanted to make a splash. They ended up with a tsunami. What's the role of the British Monarchy? Which countries still have kings and queens? To do what? If there's one thing that Meghan Markle's interview has done, it has raised questions on the role and conduct of the British Monarchy. Is it unaccountable, is it racist? What purpose does it serve? Except maybe boosting the soft power of Britain? It attracts media attention, tourism, international students, maintains political good-will. And sometimes helps secure trade deals. But is it a meaningful and relevant institution in today's world? One family gets taxpayer-funded grants, lives in lavish palaces, gets special protection from the justice system. And wields political influence. Why? Because they were born royal!!! But pause for a moment. And ask yourself: Does the world still have a place for such an antiquated system of governance? Or is it time to abolish the British monarchy? Here's our case. A child born in the United Kingdom today can become anything he or she wants to. An actor, a footballer, a prime minister, but not ahead of the state, no matter how intelligent or talented they are. Because Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy. The head of the state is a position given to a royal as a birthright. A monarch is born superior, while the rest of the people are the monarch's subjects, not British citizens. The monarch is also the sovereign of 15 countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. The monarch cannot be prosecuted, cannot be made to pay taxes either. Can drive without a license, can travel without a passport, has the power to form governments, and the power to dissolve governments even in Australia. These are all powers every monarch inherits at birth. But should they? Members of the royal family are in no way biologically superior to anyone else. They have nothing that sets them apart except maybe jewels and magnificent clothes. Their lifestyle is incredibly expensive. Accounts for the sovereign grant -- which funds the queen and her household expenses show that the monarchy cost the British taxpayer 67 million pounds between 2018 and 19. A 41% increase from the previous financial year. To add to this, the royal prerogative gives extensive and unaccountable power to the royal family. The monarchy can exercise its judgement to influence government policy, political debates, the appointment of the next prime minister and the dissolution of the British parliament. The parliament, on the other hand, is simply prohibited from questioning the conduct of the royal family or discuss the future of the monarchy. The monarchy also undermines the proper recognition of merit as the hereditary head of state. The queen is the governor of the Church of England, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and the 'fount of justice’ the head of the British judiciary. The monarchy says these are all ceremonial powers but according to a report by The Guardian, there have been at least 1,000 instances when the queen has been given a chance to shape draft legislation to suit her private wishes. In fact, in February this year, a report revealed how the queen had lobbied for changing a law to hide her wealth. The monarchy also makes it impossible to separate the church and state. For all its claims of being a multi-cultural and secular society, the Church of England discriminates in favour of one religion above all others. Because the queen is both the head of the church and the state, making it impossible to disconnect the two. Of course, the United Kingdom is not the only one. There are currently 43 monarchies globally. But only a few are constitutional monarchies. And even fewer insist on claiming the moral high ground of being a democracy. So should the UK abolish the monarchy? If Britain can leave the European Union in the name of sovereign rights, then why not? There's no other way to put it: Britain is in its worst shape since World War 2. This time, the enemy at the gates is invisible: the Wuhan virus. The pandemic continues to grow in the UK. More than 4 million cases and 124,000 deaths. The UK is the worst-affected country in Europe. Hundreds are still dying from the virus every day. And just as the vaccines emerged - so did a new variant, a more potent and more contagious mutation. Britain's response was more lockdowns. But that came at a cost. The country is going through its worst economic slump in three centuries. Jobs are disappearing, small businesses have been decimated. It will take at least two years before the economy reaches pre-pandemic levels. And we're not done listing Britain's economic woes just yet. The government has been on a borrowing spree since last year. The budget deficit is at its highest since World War 2. What Britain needs right now is some Churchillian steel to channel the guts of the greatest generation. The generation that braved the barrage of Nazi bombers, 70 years back. Instead, they're busy talking about an interview. At the outset - let's make one thing clear. We are not trivialising Meghan Markle's struggles. Her allegations are serious. The palace must be held to account for its actions. But does a family squabble qualify as public interest? At what point does fascination become an obsession? It's an unnecessary distraction, even for the government. The prime minister has to field questions about it. Even the White House has released a statement. We are in the middle of the world's largest vaccination drive. The pandemic is the only thing world leaders should be focusing on. But in Britain-- this has always been the case--daily life is shaped by royalty. Britons are urged to speak the Queen’s English. They gather under the flag and sing God Save the Queen. That's the British national anthem. They line the streets and go gaga over royal weddings. The same ones that they, the taxpayers, end up paying for. The monarchy is embedded in every Briton's DNA. But why? After all, the family doesn't do much. Other than wave and smile a lot. The royals have managed to convince the country that it needs them. That Britain would disintegrate without a king or queen. There's a common saying among royalists: Politicians may come and go, but the family remains. Humans love a sense of continuity. The idea of something that exists for posterity. The monarchy preys on this. It also explains all the pomp and show. Hundreds of years back - the British monarch was considered God's representative on earth. People aren't naive enough to believe that today. But the divine narrative remains. All the traditions, the coronation with holy oils, it's all part of the larger-than-life image. Royalists believe the monarch is endowed with God's mandate to rule. It's an unequal and unjust mandate. The family has its reasons for defending the monarchy. But why do people stick with it? The queen serves as a reminder of Britain's golden days. When it ruled the seas and had colonies on every continent. In other words, the monarchy is Britain's biggest colonial hangover. Many countries were ruled by monarchies in the middle ages. I, for one, watched this tell-all with Oprah Winfrey while texting with many of the same Black women with whom I watched their wedding in 2018. Back then, we shared OMG emojis because we were pleasantly surprised by the way Black culture was so powerfully celebrated and Markle’s African American identity so thoughtfully integrated into their ceremony at St. George’s Chapel.

Now, we were aghast at the couple’s allegations that racism toward Markle and its various consequences were a primary reason they fled their home to find freedom in sunny California.

Based on Markle’s deep commitment to women’s rights and the interview’s promo clip — Winfrey asks her, “Were you silent or were you silenced?” — I went into this assuming it would be a feminist revision of the couple’s fairy tale romance.

“The latter,” Markle responded in the interview. Later, she’d compare her life as a royal to Princess Ariel losing her voice after falling in love with a human in “The Little Mermaid.” In that analogy, this interview is the final breaking of that spell, with Markle now fully in control of her voice. It reminded us that she never needed a Prince Charming to rescue her, while showing us that their very modern marriage is what saved and ultimately liberated them both from the trappings and the trap that it is the Crown.

But therein lies the true catalyst for their radical reinvention: Harry’s racial awakening. Here, I do not just mean the accusations from the couple about the deep anxiety some royals had about the potential skin color of their son, Archie — which resulted, they said, in him not being offered the traditional rituals of the royal hospital picture, the title “Prince” and the security that comes with that status. Rather, the second hour of the interview was a culmination of a process that Harry had been undergoing since their first date in 2016, when he was becoming more clear-eyed, confrontational and emboldened to take on the British monarchy into which he was born, and the white privilege that holds it up and has benefited him his entire life.

Typically, we see racial awakenings as a tragic rite of passage for Black people. In slave narratives and early 20th-century African American autobiographies and novels, there is often a moment in which a Black child realizes she is not only different from her white peers but that her darker skin or African American parentage makes her inferior to them. Literary critic Henry Louis Gates Jr. once described it as a “scene of instruction.” In books like W.E.B. DuBois’ collection “The Souls of Black Folks,” from 1903, or Nella Larsen’s novel “Passing,” from 1929, this traumatic rupture is always intimate and severe, the first and most formative experience in a lifetime of racist insults.

As Black parents, we try to prepare our children for these inevitable encounters with The Talk, the sage advice and survival strategies we hope might blunt the damage of these betrayals. But every Black person I know has had such a moment. Mine was my senior year in high school when my white classmates charged that the only reason I had been admitted to the University of Pennsylvania was because of affirmative action, an insinuation that equated being Black with being underqualified, and an injury that has caused me to obsessively overachieve in almost every aspect of my professional life.

I’ve rarely heard white friends discuss their parallel experiences of first realizing their privilege. In fact, this past summer was unprecedented in the sheer number of public figures and predominantly white organizations that released statements or tweets acknowledging their role in perpetuating systemic racism. In private, I and many of my Black friends received more sympathetic emails or Black Lives Matter solidarity texts from our white colleagues than ever before. It seemed, suddenly, white people too were having their own version of The Talk.

And in popular culture, these awakenings are appearing with more frequency. In this season of NBC’s “This Is Us,” Randall’s white siblings, Kate and Kevin, are, as a result of the Black Lives Matter protests this past summer, slowly coming to terms with how much their own white household, and their ongoing refusal to deal with racism, has harmed their African American brother, who was adopted.

Without such recognition by our white family members and friends, racial inferiority is merely thrust onto Black people as a unique burden that we must bear, disprove of and reject. This innocence is at the core of white privilege, and by extension, white power.

Back in 2005, when Harry wore a Nazi uniform to a costume party, it would have been impossible to predict his trajectory. By last fall, however, his awakening was well underway, with him talking about how his marriage to Markle immediately changed his understanding of race.

“I had no idea it existed,” he said of unconscious bias in British GQ. “And then, sad as it is to say, it took me many, many years to realize it, especially then living a day or a week in my wife’s shoes.”

Sunday night, he took it a step further. First, he noted how “the race element” distinguished the tabloid frenzy surrounding Markle from others in the past.

“It wasn’t just about her, it was about what she represents,” he said. Next, he indicted his family for not taking on the racist attacks hurled at their own, and then linked their institutionalized reticence or refusal to intervene to Britain’s much longer history of imperialism.

That the couple landed in the United States during a pandemic that has disproportionately harmed African American and Latino families, and in a period of racial protest and rising white nationalism, feels a bit like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

But maybe that’s the point.

Freed from the constraints of not being able to confront racism head-on might mean that he will dedicate his life to dismantling it, not just out of necessity but also as a way of writing a new chapter in his family’s history and bequeath his children a legacy of anti-racism.

And if that is the case, it really will be better than any fairy tale ever imagined.

Prince Harry finally takes on white privilege: His own

Some 17.1 million Americans watched Oprah Winfrey`s bombshell television interview with Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, broadcaster CBS said on Monday. 
 
CBS said Sunday`s two-hour interview, in which Harry and Meghan accused the royal family of racism and of failing to protect them from negative media coverage, drew the biggest audience for any entertainment special since the Oscars telecast in February 2020, which was watched by 23.6 million viewers. 
It was also the most-watched non-Super Bowl event on a Sunday in prime time in over a year, CBS said. The National Football League`s Super Bowl regularly draws an audience of around 100 million and is the highest-rated TV event in the United States. 
 
Sunday`s interview was the first given by the couple since they stepped back from the British royal family a year ago. Meghan spoke of feeling suicidal while Harry said his father, Prince Charles, had let him down. 
 
The interview will be broadcast in Britain on Monday night. Buckingham Palace has yet to comment on their remarks.

As the couple stepped back from their “royal duties” last year, Meghan revealed how baby Archie, before he was born, raised concerns among the royals of how dark his skin will be and whether they will consider making him a prince. Without naming anyone, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/meghan-markle">Meghan</a> said royals had “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he is born.”

“In those months when I was pregnant ... we have in tandem the conversation of ‘He won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title,’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” she said.

The comments were made to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/prince-harry">Harry</a> who then told her. When asked if she could identify them, Meghan said, “I think that would be very damaging to them.”

It all left a toll on Meghan’s mental health who revealed in the interview that she was suicidal. She had contemplated suicide prior to the couple’s break from the royal family. “I was really ashamed to say it at the time, ashamed to have to admit it to Harry — especially because I know how much loss he’s suffered. But I knew if I didn’t say it, that I would do it. I just didn’t want to be alive any more. That was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought. I remember how he just cradled me.”

Harry also said he has been cut off financially from his family since the first quarter of 2020. It’s only after that they signed deals with Netflix and Spotify. “That was never part of the plan,” Harry said. Financially, he said, he is dependent on the inheritance left to him by his mother, the late Princess Diana, who was similarly hounded by tabloids and paparazzi before her untimely death in 1997 at the age of 36.

Harry was cut off from father Prince Charles for the longest time when he “stopped taking calls”. However, the couple have good relations with Queen Elizabeth.
