Manchester City topped Liverpool 2-1 in a thriller but City boss Pep Guardiola admitted that his clubs's title challenge could have come to an end on Thursday.

Sergio Aguero put City in front just before the break only for Roberto Firmino to level midway though the second half before Leroy Sane struck the winner in the 72nd minute.

After winning the match, Guardiola hailed his "incredible" squad as the champions cut the gap at the top to four points.

"It's a good moment to congratulate, to say thank you to these incredible players for what they have done in 16 months, and today they show(ed) for everybody how good they are, which hurt they play, against an incredible team," he told reporters.

He further added, "I think it was a good spectacle and both teams played to win, and nothing - so it's not a final, it was a final for us because losing today (the title race) was almost over, and winning today we are already there so now the Premier League is tight again so we'll see what happens in the future, relax, rest because in three days we have another big test in the FA Cup."

Pep Guardiola's reaction after Manchester City defeat leaders Liverpool 2-1

The 11-centimetre portion of the ball that Manchester City defender John Stones kept from crossing the goal line on a Liverpool chance in the first half turned out to be decisive here Thursday as the Premier League defending champions defeated the current leaders 2-1.

The match at Manchester's Etihad Stadium had the atmosphere and intensity of a final.

For Liverpool, it was not only the first loss of the Premier League season but it was also their first time conceding more than one goal.

City, meanwhile, delivered a brilliant performance after losing three of their last five Premier League matches and dropping to third place behind Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

The result lifts City to second place with 50 points, 4 behind the Reds and 2 ahead of Spurs.

The play that may have decided the contest came in the 18th minute, as Mo Salah found Sadio Mane in the area with a deft pass and the Senegal international went for goal.

Mane's strike bounced off the post, but Stones' attempt to clear collided with goalkeeper Ederson and the ball bounced back toward the goal as Salah was closing in.

Stones somehow managed to get his foot to the ball before it completely crossed the line. The goal-line technology system found that all but 11cm of the ball made it over the line.

Five minutes before the break, Sergio Agüero scored from a seemingly impossible angle to give City a 1-0 lead and set off pandemonium at the Etihad.

Roberto Firmino brought the visitors level in the 64th minute, heading in unmarked from the far post on a cross from Andrew Robertson.

A re-energized Liverpool looked set to take command until the 72nd minute when a City counter led to a beautiful goal by Leroy Sane to put the hosts ahead to stay.

Manchester City's hopes of retaining the Premier League title will not be over even if they lose to leaders Liverpool on Thursday, according to captain Vincent Kompany.

City are currently in third place with 47 points, seven points behind table-toppers Liverpool, and a defeat would give the Merseyside club a 10-point advantage in the title race.

"It's easy for everybody to assume that everything rests on this game," Kompany told the British media.

"I'm probably one of the only ones that disagrees, for the simple fact that we only had three games that we were below standard."

Liverpool are unbeaten in the league so far while City have lost three games with all defeats coming in December. The champions have lost against Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

"When you are 10 points behind... if there are not many teams between you and first, it only takes one team to start having a bad month and you will be back in," he added.

City came from behind to overhaul rivals Manchester United and win the title in 2011-12 season, even though they were eight points behind after 32 games.

"We overcame eight points in six games in the past," he added. "To be honest, I don`t live with that scenario in my head, of what happens if we lose.

"The moment I have to face the situation, at that moment I`ll see what the options are."

Samir Nasri has joined Premier League club West Ham United after returning from a year-long doping ban.

Nasri has agreed to a deal with West Ham to the end of this season with the option to extend beyond June 2019.

The 31-year-old has returned to the Premier League after spells with Arsenal and Manchester City. In total, he made 215 PL appearances, scoring 36 goals and providing 38 assists.

"Following a successful period of training at Rush Green, the French midfielder has joined the Hammers on an initial contract until the end of the 2018-19 season, with the option to extend his stay in east London," read a statement on the West Ham website.

He will also reunited at London Stadium with Manuel Pellegrini, who managed him when he and City claimed their second PL title.

"Samir will give us another dimension in our attacking play," the West Ham manager said.

Nasri's original six-month ban for a drip treatment that contravened World Anti-Doping Agency rules was increased to 18 months in August after an appeal by UEFA's ethics and disciplinary inspector.

The former France international joined Spanish side Sevilla on a season-long loan in 2016 before sealing a permanent switch to Antalyaspor, who he left by mutual consent.

N'Golo Kante insists he is finally growing into his new role in Chelsea's midfield as the France star prepares for Wednesday's clash with Southampton.

Kante earned a reputation as the world's best defensive midfielder after playing a key role in Chelsea and Leicester's Premier League title triumphs, as well as France's World Cup victory.

But the 27-year-old has had to adapt to a change of position this season under new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri.

Sarri, who replaced Antonio Conte in the close-season, brought Jorginho with him from Napoli to play the pivotal midfield role in front of the defence that used to be Kante's domain.

Sarri believes Jorginho's superior passing makes him more suited to launching Chelsea's attacks than Kante, who is now operating in a slightly more advanced role on the right of midfield.

Kante has sometimes looked out of sorts in his different position this season, but he showed signs of getting to grips with it on Sunday, scoring the winner at Crystal Palace with a well-timed run and cool finish.

"This role is something I am enjoying and in a game I try to make that run sometimes," Kante said.

"David (Luiz) gave me a good ball and I am happy to score with my left foot and give something to the team."

Away wins at Watford and Palace made it a happy Christmas for Chelsea.

But with the Blues still trailing 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, their title ambitions have been put on the back burner as they focus on securing a place in next season's Champions League via a top four finish.

Currently in fourth place -- five points ahead of fifth placed Arsenal -- Sarri's side will be expected to consolidate that position against a Southampton team struggling to avoid relegation.

Yet Chelsea shouldn't be complacent after some inconsistent displays of late, including a surprise 1-0 defeat in their last home match against Leicester.

Work in progress

They could be hampered by fitness problems, with Olivier Giroud, Cesc Fabregas, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Pedro and Callum Hudson-Odoi all suffering injuries over Christmas.

Sarri has questioned Chelsea's mental strength and cutting edge at various times this season and it would be no surprise to see new faces arrive in the January transfer window.

Blues defender David Luiz admits Chelsea are still a work in progress, but he believes Sarri's philosophy is starting to take hold.

"It's the connection, training together every day, understanding the philosophy and trying to improve," Luiz said.

In their first match of 2019, Chelsea are keen to banish the spectre of anti-semitic chants from a section of their support after they were criticised for an offensive song about Tottenham fans during recent matches.

Sarri slammed the "stupid" people involved and the club have vowed to take action against the offenders.

The chant has a long history with Chelsea supporters and the issue is complicated by Tottenham fans also singing the offensive word themselves.

Southampton are outside the bottom three only on goal difference after losing successive home matches last week.

They will be without suspended captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at Stamford Bridge after his red card against Manchester City.

"We will miss him, he's our best midfielder at the club," Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said.

N'Golo Kante growing into new role with Chelsea

The re-born Paul Pogba scored twice, for the second time since Jose Mourinho's departure from the club, as Manchester United beat Bournemouth 4-1 to make it three wins in a row for caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After emphatic wins over Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, the manner of the victory was further evidence of the return of attacking football under Solskjaer and of the liberated way in which the players are performing.

None seem to be relishing their football again more than World Cup winner Pogba, who has netted four of the 12 goals that rejuvenated United have scored in the three matches since their former Norwegian striker took the reins.

It took Pogba just five minutes to strike for sixth-placed United, sliding the ball in at the back post after a wonderful piece of dribbling and a precise low cross from Marcus Rashford.

The Frenchman, who scored twice against Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day, then burst into the box to head home an Ander Herrera cross from deep to make it 2-0.

"It is different, we still won games with the old manager but it is just a different style of playing," said Pogba.

"We are more offensive and we are creating more chances and that is how we want to play. I always want to do more, but I want to play for the team and play simple."

Not only was Pogba appearing in more advanced positions but he looked back to his confident self on the ball, strutting while in possession and constantly looking to create.

There was real class about United's third, in the 45th minute, as Anthony Martial delivered a low cross with the outside of his boot and Rashford guided it home off the outside of his outstretched foot.

Bournemouth pulled a goal back in stoppage-time at the end of the first half though when David Brooks skipped around the United defence and placed a cross on the head of Nathan Ake who nodded past David De Gea.

Romelu Lukaku made it 4-1, two minutes after coming on as a 70th-minute substitute, latching on to a Pogba through ball and hooking the ball past the advancing Asmir Begovic.

Pogba was inches away from a hat-trick with a low drive from 20 yards out that struck the post.

The relaxed and positive mood was slightly undone by a wild lunge in the 79th minute from United defender Eric Bailly on Ryan Fraser, with the Ivorian rightly being shown a straight red card.

"In the first half we attacked the game with a high tempo and high energy but the response to their goal was great. We managed the game much better than against Huddersfield," said Solskjaer.

"We are still looking for a clean sheet - you can't switch off for one second in this league.

"It's a very very good performance, the crowd was enjoying it but now Newcastle, the next one, is a different kind of test."

Paul Pogba doubles again as Solskjaer extends perfect start

Manchester City showed they are willing to accept the challenge of Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title with a 3-1 win away to Southampton on Sunday.

Following shock defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester, reigning champions City cut the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Liverpool to seven points ahead of their meeting with the Merseysiders at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

But they allowed a limited Southampton side back into the game after a dominating start, which suggests there are still frailties for Liverpool to exploit.

David Silva put City ahead after 10 minutes but they passed up a number of chances to add to the lead and gifted Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg an equaliser in the 37th minute.

For a period, Pep Guardiola's side looked fragile, but a James Ward-Prowse own-goal and a header by Sergio Aguero just before half-time restored their confidence.

Saints' frustrations boiled over with a red card for Hojbjerg after a wild challenge on Fernandinho late in the game.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl sprang a surprise in his team selection by giving a debut to 18-year-old former Chelsea starlet Kayne Ramsay at right-back.

City should have gone ahead in the fifth minute when Jack Stephens allowed Raheem Sterling to steal possession and set up David Silva.

But the City man tried to be too deliberate, with his shot blocked by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

But Saints could also have taken a more surprising lead after eight minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi's clever flick over the City defence sent Charlie Austin clear.

Austin's first touch, however, was dreadful and sent the ball into Ederson's grateful arms.

Instead of being a goal up, the home side were behind within a minute.

The left side of their defence was opened up with ease by a simple one-two, leaving Bernardo Silva clear of full-back Matt Targett and free to advance down the right. He had all the time he wanted to pick out the unmarked David Silva, who hit the ball first-time past McCarthy.

Riyad Mahrez then shot wide after a move that began with City playing a series of passes inside their own penalty area.

And Aguero squandered an excellent chance in the 25th minute, hitting his shot against McCarthy after Sterling had accelerated past the hapless Targett.

But overplaying at the other end almost proved City's undoing.

Ederson was nearly caught by Austin before dribbling round the striker. But he showed a mastery of the more conventional goalkeeping arts on the half-hour with a diving save to keep out Austin's glancing header from a corner by Ward-Prowse.

City did not heed the warning and Saints were level after 36 minutes.

Oleksandr Zinchenko was slow to see Hojbjerg closing in on him and the Southampton captain robbed the Ukraine defender and strode forward before lashing the ball in from 15 yards.

City double stuns Saints

Zinchenko could count himself lucky that referee Paul Tierney did not see his barge on Ward-Prowse after 44 minutes as a penalty.

And the home crowd were still complaining about that decision when City retook the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Sterling forced his way down the left and fired in a low cross that hit the foot of Ward-Prowse and zipped between the surprised McCarthy and his near post.

And the crowd's disbelief was complete three minutes into first-half stoppage time when Aguero rose unchallenged by Jan Bednarek to nod Zinchenko's cross under McCarthy.

In the second half both sides went through the motions. City had the points they needed and Southampton were happy to avoid further damage to their confidence and goal difference. But even then City could have had three or four more goals.

Sterling shot straight at McCarthy, Aguero hit the angle of the post and crossbar, and Mahrez blasted straight at the goalkeeper.

Frustration got the better of Hojbjerg, who launched into a scissors-style challenge on Fernandinho and was rightly sent off.

Manchester City stop the rot against Southampton

Chelsea kept up their pursuit of the Premier League's top three clubs with a 1-0 win away to London rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday, thanks to a strike by N'Golo Kante early in the second half.

Chelsea had to work hard to break down Palace who had taken seven points in their previous three matches, including a shock win over champions Manchester City, but seemed content to allow their visitors most of the possession.

After a sterile first 35 minutes, Willian smacked the post with a swinging free-kick and Ross Barkley hit the same upright soon afterwards with an acrobatic overhead effort.

Kante broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when his darting run into the Palace penalty area was spotted by defender David Luiz who fed the France World Cup winner to score from close range.

Palace substitute Connor Wickham spurned the hosts' best chance of the game when he toe-punted a shot over the bar in the dying minutes.

Chelsea remain in fourth place in the Premier League, one point behind Manchester City -- who were playing later on Sunday -- and two points adrift of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, but 11 behind leaders Liverpool. Crystal Palace remain in 14th spot.

The win also gave Chelsea an important five-point cushion over Arsenal, their nearest challengers for the fourth Champions League spot who were hammered 5-1 by Liverpool on Saturday.

"It is never easy to play here or control it here especially when they (Palace) play long balls but we did well. We could have scored early but they also did a great match defensively which is why it was so difficult," Chelsea's Luiz told reporters.

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud had two goals ruled out for offside and then was forced off injured.

Coach Maurizio Sarri said the Frenchman had an ankle problem which looked set to rule him out of Wednesday's game against Southampton and adds to the team's fitness problems, particularly in attack with Pedro, Cesc Fabregas and Ruben Loftus Cheek also currently sidelined.

"We played against a dangerous opponent so we had to have possession, we played well in the first 45 minutes and even better in the second half, the only thing I didn't like is that we didn't kill the match off," added the Italian.

"That meant it was hard to defend the match in the box in the final minutes."

"After our goal, I think we started well. At the beginning we are good positioning, but after our goal they push it and when they push it here, they play with great determination and they have players to make the difference in all the pitch, but especially in our box.

Emery added, "They scored two, three quick goals and it's a difficult moment for us but we spoke in the dressing room, it's another experience for us. Bad experience, to learn."

Liverpool thrash Arsenal 5-1 to widen lead in Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur's status as Premier League title chasers was seriously harmed on Saturday as they fell to a first defeat in seven league games, losing the lead to go down 3-1 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Harry Kane fired a largely unimpressive Spurs side in front midway through the first half, picking the ball up from deep out wide, cutting inside and finding the top corner from outside the area with a sumptuous strike on his weaker left foot.

The goal was Kane's fourth in three league games but was not enough to see off the dogged visitors, who have taken points off some of the biggest teams such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United in their return to the top flight.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side levelled in the 72nd minute with a towering header from a corner from French defender Willy Boly after a period of sustained pressure around Tottenham's area.

Mexican forward Raul Jimenez then gave them the lead in the 83rd minute on the break, squeezing a perfectly struck shot under the diving Hugo Lloris and into the bottom corner. Helder Costa sealed the win with another counter-attack goal in the 87th.

A first home defeat since late October leaves second-placed Tottenham six points adrift of Liverpool, who can widen that gap when they host Arsenal later on Saturday. Manchester City could move second if they win at Southampton on Sunday.

"We decided the game was over"

Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino criticised his side for easing off in the second half and assuming they had the victory wrapped up.

"In the second half we decided that the game was over and when you start to think that you run into problems," he told a news conference.

"We dominated possession in the first half then we missed that freshness to kill the game, instead we tried to manage it at 1-0. We know from experience that if you aren't at 100 percent in every game this can happen, it's not enough to play well for 60 or 70 minutes, you have to do it for 90."

Wolves coach Nuno said he would have been happy to settle for a draw but praised his side for their hunger in searching for the win.

"We had a lot of belief after the equaliser, I would have said a draw was a good result, but I cannot control the emotions of the boys if they see space in front of them," he said.

"It is good for the dressing room but to play like this at Wembley, the home of football, is the big thing."

Mauricio Pochettino dismisses Spurs title talk after Wolves defeat

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has urged the club to "solve the problem" of Eden Hazard's future, amid speculation that the Belgian winger will leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Hazard, who has one-and-a-half years remaining on his Chelsea deal, said he will not make a decision on his long-term future until the end of the campaign, which did nothing to stop the persistent rumours linking him to Real Madrid.

Asked what he thought Hazard would do, Sarri told a news conference on Friday: "I don't know. I speak to him only about the position on the pitch. But I think that it's time to decide.

"I think we have to solve the problem. If we want to plan the future, we have to solve this problem."

Hazard boasts a hand in 19 Premier League goals this season, more than any other player, and was again on the scoresheet with a brace in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Watford on Boxing Day.

While Hazard prefers to play on the wing, Sarri has used him in a central "false-nine" role during the last few matches and may do so again for Sunday's trip to Crystal Palace.

With strikers Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata struggling to score on a regular basis, the Italian manager expects Hazard to shoulder most of the goalscoring responsibility.

"He played four matches as false number nine, and he scored three goals and two assists," Sarri said.

"I am really very happy with him in this position, because he's very able to score, first of all, but he's very able to open spaces for the team mates, to come and play with the team mates.

"But in the future he can also play as a winger of course."

Sarri also ruled out Pedro for at least 10 days with a hamstring problem.

The Spanish forward picked up the injury in the first half at Vicarage Road and was replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has been nursing a hamstring problem of his own and was taken off in the 85th minute.

"We have two problems, the first more serious with Pedro," Sarri said. "A hamstring injury and I think that he will have to rest for about 10 days.

"The second problem was Odoi, it's not as serious but I don't think he will play in the next match."

A superb brace by Felipe Anderson gave West Ham United a 2-1 comeback win at Southampton in a pulsating Premier League match on Thursday.

The result lifted West Ham to ninth in the table on 27 points from 19 games while Southampton stayed 16th on 15 points, three above the relegation zone after suffering their first home defeat in five matches.

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini was delighted to see his team in the top half of the standings midway through the campaign after starting with four defeats.

"All the credit (to the players)," he told the BBC.

"We played a very good game from the first minute to win it and we were very balanced. We worked mostly in the opposition half and we defended very well.

"December has been a good month for the team, not just for me, for the team. I think one of the most important things is that we play the same way away as at home."

The game sprung to life when Southampton forward Nathan Redmond bundled the ball home with his shoulder in the 50th minute after visiting keeper Lukazs Fabianski parried his initial shot and Oriol Romeu's rebound.

In the absence of first-choice strikers Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, West Ham lacked cutting edge until Brazilian midfielder Anderson turned the match on its head.

Anderson equalised in the 53rd minute with a stinging first-time shot from 20 metres and completed West Ham's comeback in the 59th when he buried the ball into the top right corner from 13 metres to cap a lightning break by the visitors.

Fabianski had kept out a long-range effort by forward Stuart Armstrong at the other end and marshalled his defence superbly in the closing stages as the Saints threw men forward in search of an equaliser.

The West Ham keeper clawed out Mario Lemina's shot while livewire Anderson twice went close for West Ham in a see-saw last 15 minutes, with Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl left to rue a missed chance to steer clear of the bottom three.

"If you give it away like we did then you don't deserve to (win)," he said.

"We were not so fresh and not so speedy, sharp to win the second balls. The way we lost today was too easy."

I think one of the most important things is that we play the same way away as at home." The game sprung to life when Southampton forward Nathan Redmond bundled the ball home with his shoulder in the 50th minute after visiting keeper Lukazs Fabianski parried his initial shot and Oriol Romeu's rebound.

Eden Hazard took his goal tally for Chelsea to triple figures, scoring twice in a 2-1 win at Watford on Wednesday as the Blues stayed fourth in the Premier League.

After a home loss to Leicester on Saturday, Chelsea bounced back with a well-deserved win at Vicarage Road, where they dominated possession, though Watford were not without their chances.

Chelsea remained 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool, while Watford slipped to ninth on 27 points.

The match, however, was overshadowed by the injury suffered by Watford defender Christian Kabasele, who crashed into a goalpost early in the game.

Despite appearing to suffer a rib injury in the collision, he tried to continue but ended up being carried out of the ground on a stretcher while being given oxygen.

Hazard said after hitting the century mark of goals his ambition was to become a Chelsea legend.

"A hundred and 101 goal with this amazing club is something I would never forget," he told Sky Sports.

"I want to score more goals for this club and then try to be a legend (like Frank) Lampard, (John) Terry, (Didier) Drogba."

It was not, however, a perfect performance by Hazard, who somehow failed to score from point-blank range in the 32nd minute when he could not connect with a sublime low cross from full back Cesar Azpilicueta.

But the Belgian made amends by opening the scoring in first half stoppage time when he rounded Watford 'keeper Ben Foster and slotted home after being put through with a pass by Mateo Kovacic.

Watford equalised moments before the break with a well-worked corner to Argentine midfielder Roberto Pereyra, whose superbly-timed volley from the edge of the box rocketed into the net for his sixth Premier League goal of season.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty early in the second half when Hazard was brought down by Foster, who received a yellow card.

Hazard converted from the spot for what proved to be the winner.

"I think we played a good match with a good level of determination and attention for 90 minutes," said Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri.

"It was dangerous for us when they conceded, but we reacted well and we didn't stop playing our football."

Watford boss Javi Gracia lamented his team's inability to make it three wins in a row.

"We knew it would be difficult for us but after going behind in the first half and to draw level, we were playing better in the second half," he said.

"We were dominating the game, had more possession and then conceded the goal. It was tough from there and difficult to keep pressing."

Hazard brace gives Chelsea 2-1 win at Watford, Kabasele injured

Manchester City stumbled to the most unexpected defeat of the Premier League season on Saturday before neighbours Manchester United began their brave new world under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a glorious reminder of long-forgotten attacking swagger.

After City's sensational 3-2 reverse against Crystal Palace at their Etihad fortress, United seemed liberated and re-energised after Jose Mourinho's midweek sacking as they romped to a 5-1 win at Cardiff City -- the first time they have hit five in the league since the final match of the golden Alex Ferguson era in 2013.

A remarkable 30-metre thunderbolt from Andros Townsend adorned Palace's comeback from a goal down in the rain as Pep Guardiola's champions City saw their 100 per cent league home record this season shattered.

So, what recently looked like an imperious title defence now looks problematic as City lie four points behind leaders Liverpool, who had thrown down the gauntlet with a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.

There was more good news for the Reds as fourth-placed Chelsea also squandered their unbeaten home record with a 1-0 defeat by Leicester City.

Arsenal kept up their pursuit in fifth, thanks to a double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a 3-1 home win over Burnley that put the Gabonese striker top of the league's goalscoring charts.

After 18 matches, Liverpool are now the only unbeaten side left in England's top four divisions on 48 points, with City on 44 and Tottenham Hotspur, who visit Everton on Sunday, third on 39. Chelsea and Arsenal both have 37, while United are on 29.

On a remarkable, rain-sodden afternoon at the Etihad, Manchester City, who had lost their season's unbeaten record at Chelsea two weeks ago, seemed predictably dominant when striding into a first-half lead through Ilkay Gundogan.

But Palace responded quickly with a Jeffrey Schlupp strike and three minutes later a wondrous volley from 30 metres from the mercurial England international Townsend, an early contender for goal of the season.

Luka Milivojevic put the visitors further clear with a penalty after the break before Palace survived a late onslaught that saw Kevin De Bruyne score five minutes from time.

"It's complicated but we fight until the last second. We are in December and we will try and recover and try and win games again," shrugged Guardiola, conceding that his side needed to "recover mentally and recover physicality".

UNITED REBORN

In stark contrast, after a traumatic week which saw the end of Mourinho's two-and-a-half-year reign, Manchester United seemed mentally and physically re-born, playing with verve, pace and attacking intent that reflected the smile of their still fresh-faced caretaker boss and old club hero, Solskjaer.

He was beaming after three minutes when Marcus Rashford's free-kick put United ahead and further goals before halftime from Ander Herrera and Anthony Martial -- after a dazzling passing interchange -- and a second-half double from Jesse Lingard made it a perfect start for the Norwegian.

United, with Paul Pogba back in the fold, poured forward in a free-spirited manner rarely seen under Mourinho as Solskjaer lifted the gloom of United's worst start in 28 years.

"Football is easy if you have good players. This is such a great group of players. The quality is just unbelievable," the modest Solskjaer said, as both his team and ex-United players, headed by Wayne Rooney, all praised the instant 'Ole effect'.

Chelsea's loss at Stamford Bridge seemed almost as unlikely as Manchester City's with Leicester facing the prospect of a third straight defeat but Jamie Vardy's first-time finish soon after the break brought much-needed relief for the Foxes' manager Claude Puel.

At the Emirates Stadium, the predatory Aubameyang took his tally of league goals to 12 with his double in the win over Burnley, one more than Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

Fulham earned a goalless draw at Newcastle United but remained bottom of the table on 10 points alongside Huddersfield Town, who were beaten 3-1 by a Southampton side that look rejuvenated under new Austrian manager Ralph Hasenhuettl.

Watford moved into seventh place with a 2-0 win at West Ham United, thanks to goals from Troy Deeney and Gerard Deulofeu.

Five-star Manchester United rediscover their swagger but City are stunned

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made an instant impact as Manchester United caretaker manager with Paul Pogba to the fore in a transformed performance from the final days of Jose Mourinho's reign in a 5-1 thumping of Cardiff on Saturday.

Solskjaer has been put in charge until the end of the season after Mourinho was sacked on Tuesday and could not have asked for a better start in the Welsh capital thanks to Marcus Rashford's third-minute free-kick.

The visitors also had a slice of fortune when Ander Herrera's strike deflected in to double their advantage.

But United shrugged off Victor Camarasa's penalty, awarded for a dubious handball call on Rashford, with the sort of free-flowing play that appeared so scarcely under Mourinho as Anthony Martial started and finished a fine move also including Pogba and Jesse Lingard.

And Lingard struck twice more in the second half to secure United's biggest win of the season so far.

As well as getting Solskjaer off to a flying start, victory also sees United crucially close the gap on the Premier League top four to eight points thanks to Chelsea's 1-0 home defeat by Leicester earlier in the day.

Pogba was forced to watch the full 90 minutes from the bench last weekend as Liverpool inflicted the final blow to Mourinho's time in charge with a 3-1 win that left United 19 points off the top after just 17 games.

The French World Cup-winner was restored from the start for the first time in four league games and looked far more like the player United splashed a then world-record £89 million ($113 million) on in 2016 than the one that clashed with his former boss off the field and disappointed on it for much of the past two seasons.

Rashford gives United perfect start

It was Pogba who was felled on the edge of the Cardiff area early on and he stepped over the ball for Rashford to take aim with a dipping effort that deceived home goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and nestled in his bottom left-hand corner.

Solskjaer won only three of his 18 Premier League games in charge of Cardiff during an ill-fated spell that ended with relegation in 2014.

But a winning return to Wales rarely looked in doubt thereafter as the visiting fans enthusiastically chanted the Norwegian's name throughout.

The travelling hordes were enjoying their side moving the ball around with a speed and accuracy more reminiscent of Solskjaer's days as a player at Old Trafford when United dominated English football.

Pogba was at the heart of it and his intelligent pass picked out Herrera, whose shot flicked off Greg Cunningham to loop over the helpless Etheridge.

If Solskjaer's side were fortunate then, it was Cardiff who got a break nine minutes later when the assistant referee adjudged Rashford to have handled rather than control the ball with his shoulder inside the area.

Camarasa's perfectly-taken penalty could have sparked a collapse for a team short on confidence in recent times.

Instead, United responded resoundingly with a fantastic team goal as a quick interchange of passes between Pogba and Lingard freed Martial to score his ninth goal of the season.

Lingard took responsibility from the spot just before the hour mark after another soft penalty was awarded for a foul by Sol Bamba on the England international.

And the England international was the beneficiary of another defence-splitting pass from Pogba a minute from time as he rounded Etheridge and slotted into an empty net.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes instant impact as Manchester United thrash Cardiff

Liverpool will spend Christmas on top of the Premier League after goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk earned them a 2-0 win at Wolves on Friday, opening up a four-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.

City can reduce the gap back to a point with a win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, but Juergen Klopp's unbeaten side will now enjoy their Christmas dinner perched in first place.

Only two teams -- Chelsea in 2005-06 and City last season -- have had more points after 18 Premier League games in a season than Liverpool's 48 and the January 3 clash between Pep Guardiola's side and Klopp's men promises to be an epic.

It was by no means a vintage display from Liverpool in driving rain but this was a game which, coming after the high of Sunday's triumph over Manchester United, could have been a stumbling block for Klopp's side.

"It was clear that the whole game would be difficult. Everybody wants to press. We want to be compact but wide as well which makes it difficult. We defended it pretty well. The heavy rain was difficult for both teams tonight. It was a big fight. We knew that we needed to be ready," said Klopp.

"It was brilliant -- both goals. It was perfect football, especially on a night like tonight when it was difficult to play proper football," added the German.

On a foul night at Molineux, Wolves began brightly, the promoted side showing why they are in seventh place and Moroccan midfielder Romain Saiss forced Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker into an early save.

But Liverpool grabbed the lead in the 18th minute with a beautifully-worked goal. After a clever exchange with Sadio Mane, Brazilian midfielder Fabinho's pull-back was exquisitely turned in off the outside of his foot by Salah.

Adama Traore, Jonny and Matt Doherty all had chances saved by Alisson before the break, suggesting that Wolves, who had won their last three games, were still very much in the game but it was the visitors who extended their lead in the 68th minute.

Salah drifted a ball into the box towards Van Dijk and the towering Dutch defender calmly slotted past Rui Patricio from close range for his first Premier League goal.

Klopp had rotated his squad ahead of the festive fixtures with Georginio Wijnaldum starting on the bench and Jordan Henderson given the start in central midfield while Adam Lallana made an appearance in the second half as a substitute for the injured Naby Keita.

Klopp said Keita had suffered two separate cuts in his leg and foot from challenges but did not expect his injuries to keep him out of action.

The second goal killed off Wolves, whose inability to convert chances was highglighted again when substitute Morgan Gibbs-White shot into the side-netting near the end after a slip-up from Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk strike as Liverpool defeat Wolves

Manchester City suffered their first home Premier League loss in eight months as a shock 3-2 defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday left Pep Guardiola's champions trailing leaders Liverpool by four points.

City, who had won all nine home games in the league this season, are in second place on 44 points with Liverpool, who won 2-0 at Wolves on Friday, on 48.

Two defeats in three games for City, who lost at Chelsea a fortnight ago, have given Juergen Klopp's Liverpool the upper hand in the title race and turned the Jan. 3 clash between the sides at the Etihad into a real showdown.

City, sorely missing injured midfielder David Silva, looked ragged and panicked at times, but Palace and their manager Roy Hodgson deserve huge credit for a magnificent performance which included a brilliant goal by Andros Townsend.

Many teams better than Palace have been unable to find the recipe for beating Guardiola's side but the London side took their chances and defended resiliently to secure a victory that belies their 14th place in the table.

"Obviously, the result is a setback. We have lost but we are only looking at ourselves game to game," said City captain Fabian Delph.

"We had a few chances which we have put away in the past, but fair play to Crystal Palace - they were stubborn and organised.

"It's hard to analyse and we will go back to the drawing board and look at it," added the England full back.

It seemed to be business as usual for City after German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan nodded them in front in the 27th minute, meeting a Fabian Delph cross from deep with a firm, downward header.

But Jeffrey Schlupp brought Palace level with a low diagonal shot into the bottom corner and Townsend stunned the Etihad Stadium with a sensational volley that will surely be a goal of the season contender.

Bernardo Silva's header out was met first time by Townsend who blasted his volley from 30 metres past helpless City keeper Ederson who could do nothing about the perfect combination of technique and power from the former Spurs and Newcastle player.

The air of surprise at the Etihad turned to panic in the 51st minute when Palace went 3-1 up through a Luka Milivojevic penalty after Kyle Walker brought down Max Meyer with a wild challenge.

Guardiola brought on substitutes Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne and it was the Belgian midfielder who gave the home side hope with a cross-shot in the 85th minute that caught out Palace keeper Vicente Guaita.

Gabriel Jesus missed a stoppage-time chance when he headed over a De Bruyne cross from a promising position but City were left to taste their first home league loss since the Manchester derby on April 7.

Roy Hodgson's Palace had picked up just one point from their last six away games and had not won at City since 1990.

Manchester City stunned by Crystal Palace, trail Liverpool by four points

Chelsea suffered their first home defeat since April as Jamie Vardy fired Leicester to a shock 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Maurizio Sarri's side paid the price for failing to convert their chances when Vardy netted early in the second half to hand the Blues their first defeat in five games.

Chelsea's disjointed display surrendered an 18-match unbeaten run at the Bridge dating back to Tottenham's victory in April.

Sarri has insisted he does not expect Chelsea to challenge for the title this season, the Italian rating Liverpool and Manchester City as "two steps ahead" of the Blues.

This was further evidence to support Sarri's concerns, with Chelsea left trailing 11 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Chelsea almost took the lead in bizarre fashion after just two minutes when David Luiz launched a long ball towards Willian.

Luiz's pass bounced on the edge of the Leicester area, prompting Foxes keeper Kasper Schmeichel to rush off his line, but when neither he or Willian could make contact, the ball bounced just wide of the empty net.

Pedro was inches away from putting Chelsea in front when he met Willian's corner with a glancing header that flashed wide as Luiz stretched in vain to turn it in.

Jamie Vardy strikes as Leicester stun Chelsea

Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with two goals in Saturday's 3-1 home win over struggling Burnley, returning his side to winning ways after two straight defeats.

The Gabon forward gave Arsenal the lead in the 14th minute, knocking in a pass from Sead Kolasinac after a classy ball from Mesut Ozil. He then smashed high into the net in the 48th to complete an impressive counter-attack from Unai Emery's side.

Burnley, 18th in the table and without an away win since September, hit back with a scrappy goal from Ashley Barnes having spurned a good chance to take an unlikely lead at the start of the game when Ashley Westwood was denied by the feet of Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Substitute Alex Iwobi restored Arsenal's two-goal cushion with a simple finish in stoppage-time, helped by another clever move from German playmaker Ozil, who was left out of the team for Wednesday's 2-0 League Cup defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

Aubameyang's brace moved him on to 12 goals for the season, leapfrogging Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as the league's top scorer and taking fifth-placed Arsenal on to 37 points, level with Chelsea who play Leicester City later.

Arsenal's 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions was halted on Sunday with a 3-2 defeat at Southampton and they were knocked out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage with a painful home loss to north London neighbours Tottenham.

Aubameyang brace gives Arsenal win over Burnley

Arsenal manager Unai Emery says playmaker Mesut Ozil is needed at the club and would be part of their squad to face Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.

Ozil, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then-record 42 million pounds ($53 million), has been left out of the side regularly in the last two months, at first due to a back sprain and then - according to Emery - because of the physicality of some opponents.

The 30-year-old was not in the squad for the 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday when Emery repeatedly refused to say that he wanted to hold on to the German playmaker when questioned about his future.

The Spanish coach was more positive about Ozil in a news conference on Friday, however, with fifth-placed Arsenal looking to rebound from the Spurs loss and a 3-2 defeat by struggling Southampton in the league last weekend.

"I want every player with a good mentality to help us and give us their characteristics and quality. We need Mesut Ozil," Emery said, before adding that the player has a future in the team.

"Every player wants to play and be okay to help the team when we need. The frustration is the same for everybody when they didn’t play in a match," he added.

"But I spoke with him and with the regularity in the season, I am telling him what we need from him and he has the commitment to help us and the quality and the characteristics to help us when the team needs his moments in the pitch in one game.

"Tomorrow he is in the 18 players, in the squad."

Ozil's contract is due to run until 2021, yet British media have reported the club may let him leave in January. The midfielder is one of the most expensive players on the payroll, earning a reported 350,000 pounds a week.

Arsenal have three matches before the transfer window opens as the packed festive schedule gets underway.

After their home match against Burnley, they visit Brighton & Hove Albion on Boxing Day before travelling to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool three days later.

Ozil could get his big chance to impress Emery against Burnley as the manager revealed Armenian attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan will not be fit for the clash. Left back Sead Kolasinac is available after he recovered from a thigh injury.

Juergen Klopp said his Liverpool side may need to surpass Manchester City's record points total to win the Premier League after a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday guaranteed them top spot at Christmas.

Goals by Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were enough to take Liverpool four points clear of champions Manchester City who face Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Liverpool, who have topped the Premier League table on three previous occasions without winning the title, have 48 points from 18 games and only two teams -- Chelsea in 2005-06 and City last season -- have had more points at that stage.

City won the title last season with a record 100 points but such has been the pace at the top this season that Klopp believes even more might be needed this time.

"Everybody asks me about the situation, first in the table and all that stuff and that the last four times a team was first in the table at Christmas they won the league, but was it ever such a tight race?" Klopp said.

"So far it looks like a really special season, 48 points before Christmas is crazy.

"But there are other teams. Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, they will probably win, then they will have 40-something points, nobody is dropping points from one down to five.

"You will probably need 105 to be champions, you don't know!" he added.

Tottenham Hotspur, in third place, have 39 points ahead of this weekend's clash with Everton, while fourth-placed Chelsea are on 37 before their home clash with Leicester City.

Liverpool's title challenge has been built on a rock-solid defence which has been breached only seven times in the League so far this season with Van Dijk outstanding.

The Dutchman even proved effective at the other end of the pitch on a rainy night in the Midlands as he scored his first Premier League goal to double Liverpool's lead.

"I'm more happy that I'm keeping clean sheets with my team and winning games," Van Dijk told Liverpoolfc.com.

"Obviously scoring a goal is a bonus and obviously a very proud moment and hopefully there's more to come, but I’m more focussed on winning games."

We might need 105 points to win title, says Juergen Klopp

Manchester United's caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Thursday that he wanted to "get the players enjoying their football" after he returned to Old Trafford following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

United have turned to their former Norway international striker Solskjaer on a deal until the end of the season to inject some life into what has been a fraught campaign.

The club parted company with Mourinho on Tuesday with the club in the sixth spot in the Premier League having made their worst start to a season for 28 years, culminating in a limp 3-1 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Mourinho's final few months in charge were dominated by media reports of his falling out with the club's 90 million pounds ($114 million) France midfielder Paul Pogba while his side laboured on the pitch playing dull defensive football.

Solskjaer, who as a player was part of United's era of dominance under Alex Ferguson and scored the goal that secured an unprecedented treble almost 20 years ago, wants to return a feel-good factor to their under-performing squad.

"I am just going to be myself... get the players enjoying their football and looking forward to seeing the supporters again," Solskjaer, 45, told MUTV on Thursday in his first interview as caretaker boss.

"We are in a results business and we want to win games and that is my job. We just want to see them play the football they can."

Solskjaer, who has left his role as manager of Norwegian club Molde, said the busy upcoming schedule of matches would give all of his squad a chance to impress him.

Their game on Saturday at Cardiff City, where Solskjaer was briefly manager in 2014, begins a run of five in 15 days.

“The amount of games coming up is no problem because we’ve got an amazing squad, we’ve got 23-24 players,” Solskjaer said.

“They are all quality and they’ll all get a chance now with the amount of games coming up. They’ve got a chance to show they are Man United players.”

Solskjaer's place in United's folklore means he is likely to receive a rapturous welcome when they play their next home match against Huddersfield Town on December 26.

The Norwegian, who was the hero on one of the club's most famous nights when got the winner in stoppage time as United completed a 2-1 comeback triumph over Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final, said he would relish his time in charge.

"As a player I gave everything I have and now walking out and leading this team and being part of this team. Playing for pride, history, it will be very special."

Arsenal said Thursday they have identified a man they suspect of throwing a plastic bottle at Tottenham's Dele Alli during Spurs' 2-0 League Cup quarter-final victory over their bitter North London rivals.

The England midfielder - who scored a delightful goal to put Spurs 2-0 up at the Emirates - was hit on the head as he took a throw-in in the second half.

Arsenal said in a statement that the club had been "embarrassed" by the incident, promising the individual concerned would face a lengthy ban.

The club statement said that the suspect left the stadium immediately after throwing the bottle at Alli in the 73rd minute of the match but an image of him has been found by analysing CCTV footage of the crowd.

"We are liaising with the Metropolitan Police and investigations continue in order to apprehend the culprit," the club added.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino praised 22-year-old Alli for the control he showed during the incident.

"It was an amazing reaction," he told reporters on Thursday.

"In another country the player was going to be down on the pitch. Dele behaved really well. Arsenal should be grateful to him because the player could have gone down and created a massive problem."

And the Spurs boss said he did not think Arsenal should be punished.

Earlier this week a Tottenham fan was handed a four-year football banning order after throwing a banana skin towards Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when the teams met in an acrimonious clash at the Emirates on December 2.

Arsenal and Tottenham have both been fined by the Football Association for failing to control their players in that Premier League derby, which Arsenal won 4-2.

Both sets of players were involved in a fracas after Eric Dier celebrated his goal in front of Arsenal's substitutes.

Spurs have been fined £50,000 ($63,000), with Arsenal receiving a £45,000 ($57,000) sanction.

Two second-half goals from substitute Xherdan Shaqiri gave Liverpool a 3-1 Premier League win over Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday as Juergen Klopp's side regained top spot with a pulsating performance in the North West derby.

Unbeaten Liverpool have 45 points from 17 games with champions Manchester City, who beat Everton 3-1 on Saturday, a point behind.

United are 19 points adrift of Liverpool in sixth place -- the biggest gap between the clubs at this stage of this season for 46 years -- and a daunting 11 points behind the top four.

Jose Mourinho's side's 26 points is their lowest return after 17 games in the Premier League era and the defeat, which could have been even more emphatic, is sure to re-open questions about the manager's future.

Here are five talking points from the weekend's action:

SHAQIRI COMPLETES LIVERPOOL

While much of the focus has been on Manchester United's dire play, it should not be overlooked just how good Juergen Klopp's Liverpool are playing right now.

The unbeaten league leaders had 36 shots on goal and dominated possession throughout the emphatic win, their passing at times seeming to force United's players to twist and contort in circles.

It was the introduction of Xherdan Shaqiri after 70 minutes that really turned the screw, as the Swiss forward showed why he could be the missing piece of the puzzle for Liverpool to go from Champions League runners-up last season to trophy winners.

NEW BOSS BEER BOUNCE AT ST MARY'S

Southampton's new manager Ralph Hasenhuettl had quite a task to rescue a side without a win since the beginning of September, although he put that to bed quickly with a thrilling 3-2 win over Arsenal on Sunday.

After defeats in his first two games, it was the Austrian's opening match at home that got his Southampton project up and running, as he opted for a 3-4-3 formation made to get the best out of strikers Danny Ings, Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond.

Charlie Austin came on to replace Redmond and grabbed the winner late on to lift Saints out of the bottom three, on goal difference at least.

Perhaps the new manager bounce at St Mary's was not just about what was on the pitch, as Hasenhuettl had sent drinks vouchers to season ticket holders before the game in order to lift spirits.

SPURS LATE SHOW

The story goes that Spurs often crack under pressure. Yet Christian Eriksen's stoppage-time winner against Burnley on Saturday was the fourth time in nine games in all competitions they have scored a decisive goal within the final 10 minutes of a match.

Indeed, the strike was almost identical to the Dane's winning goal against Inter Milan at Wembley last month that rescued their Champions League hopes.

Eriksen and Heung-min Son both came off the bench to help break down a dogged and ultra-defensive Burnley side who had frustrated their more talented opposition.

But Spurs did not panic and, as is becoming part of the narrative now in north London, bided their time to find the crucial breakthrough in manager Mauricio Pochettino's 100th Premier League victory.

REFEREE QUESTIONS

Watford and Cardiff City could dominate the goal of the month contenders all on their own after the 3-2 victory by the Hornets at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

But Cardiff manager Neil Warnock was aggrieved at some of the decisions by referee Andrew Madley, who was officiating only his second Premier League game of his career and his first of the season.

"When I've got Andre Marriner (fourth official) beside me and I've got a young referee, first game of the season, I don't understand that at all, me," Warnock said.

"Whether it's because it's only Cardiff City, 'we'll let someone have an experiment today.' We've got one of the best referees (Marriner) at the side of me. I'm flabbergasted."

Warnock's frustrations may hint at a wider problem in the English game, that the level of top-class officials is dropping off and younger blood has to be brought in quickly to fill the widening gaps.

GOAL GAP

Worries of a growing chasm between the top sides in the Premier League and the rest are highlighted by the fact that only six sides have a positive goal difference while 10 have all conceded more than they have scored.

Bottom side Fulham have already shipped 42 goals, just a few less than the top four, combined, have conceded this season. Not that it is just a problem for Fulham, as the four teams directly above them all have a goal difference of more than minus-10.

Five talking points from the Premier League weekend

Manchester United had not lost to Liverpool in the Premier League for eight games and over four years prior to Sunday's 3-1 defeat, but the current chasm between the two sides was exposed as Jose Mourinho's men fell 19 points behind the league leaders at Anfield.

Match-going United fans have been reluctant to turn on Mourinho, instead often pointing fingers at executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's reluctance to back the manager in the transfer market this summer or the club's American owners, the Glazer family.

However, by the end of proceedings on Sunday, as two deflected Xherdan Shaqiri strikes in the final 17 minutes sealed a thoroughly deserved victory for the hosts, it was Liverpool fans who sarcastically sang "don't sack Mourinho".

The Portuguese coach said he accepted responsibility for a fifth defeat of the season that leaves the 20-time champions of England 11 points adrift of even a top-four finish.

But he also pointed the finger at what he described as "permanently injured" players and claimed both sides played "in relation to their qualities".

That does not say much for Mourinho's management as despite Liverpool spending more than any other Premier League club this summer to mount a title challenge, United's transfer spend under Mourinho in recent years still dwarfs that of any side other than champions Manchester City.

"Not one of the United midfielders can pass a football," said former United captain Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

"Not one of them. I find it staggering. United were awful."

Wasted millions

The wasted millions that have led United to this position were laid bare at Anfield as Paul Pogba, who cost a then world-record £89 million ($112 million) in 2016, was left on the bench for the full 90 minutes.

Another near £100 million of attacking talent in Juan Mata and Anthony Martial also started on the sidelines, while £50 million close-season signing Fred did not even make an injury-hit matchday squad.

"If you came down from the moon today and knew nothing about football you'd say United are an average Premier League side," said another former United captain Roy Keane in a withering assessment of the Red Devils' predicament.

"They are Manchester United of the 1980s, they can be a decent cup team."

Liverpool dominated United, England and most of Europe in the 80s, but have not won a league title since 1990.

An end to nearly three decades of hurt could be in sight, though, as victory took Jurgen Klopp's men back to the top of the table, a point clear of City.

As Klopp bounded onto the field to hug his players and rouse the home fans in one final celebration after the final whistle, the German epitomised the differing mood at the two clubs personified by their managers.

Mourinho had successfully parked the bus to come away from Anfield with 0-0 draws in each of the two previous seasons.

Yet, this United side are not even capable of mastering that gameplan anymore with a defence that has conceded 29 goals in 17 Premier League games.

United must now watch their two fiercest rivals battle it out for the title, while already a top-four finish looks like a tall order for Mourinho's men.

Ultimately, it was failure to qualify for the Champions League that cost Mourinho's predecessors Louis van Gaal and David Moyes their jobs.

The same fate is likely to meet Mourinho, despite extending his contract to 2020 earlier this year.

"Will Mourinho leave? I think it will happen," added Neville, who reserved much of the blame for Woodward and the board.

"Nobody above him can handle him. They don't know what to do with him, they don't know what to say to him. They don't know what he's going to say at every press conference.

"It will cost a fortune to lose him now."
