A recording had since emerged of a fearful voice message Sala apparently sent in which he expressed concerns about the single-engine Piper Malibu aircraft he was flying in.

The 28-year-old Argentina-born forward was en route from Nantes in western France to make his debut for Welsh team Cardiff City.

On Thursday, the authorities said they were resuming their search efforts.

Guernsey police resume search for missing footballer Emiliano Sala

Premier League club Cardiff City's record new signing, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/plane-carrying-cardiff-city-striker-emiliano-sala-goes-missing-191987">Emiliano Sala</a>, is missing presumed dead after a light aircraft he was travelling in disappeared over the English Channel, with a search to find the plane being called off on Tuesday.

The Argentine striker, signed on Saturday from French club Nantes for a reported fee of 17 million euros ($19.3 million), was flying to Cardiff aboard the plane that disappeared from radars around 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of the island of Guernsey on Monday night.

The search continued throughout Tuesday before being suspended for the night, with police on the British island warning that survival chances were "slim" if the aircraft landed on water.

A 15-hour search covering a 1,155 square-mile (3,000 square-kilometre) area in the Channel spotted "a number of floating objects in the water", Guernsey police added.

"We have found no signs of those on board. If they did land on the water, the chances of survival are at this stage, unfortunately, slim."

French civil aviation authorities had confirmed that 28-year-old Sala "was on board the plane". It is thought there was one other passenger on the aircraft.

Police on Guernsey, which sits just off the north coast of France, said the pilot had requested to lower his altitude shortly before air traffic control in neighbouring Jersey lost contact with the plane.&nbsp;

'Fearing the worst'

One of the rescuers searching for the missing plane earlier admitted they were "fearing the worst", thoughts echoed by Sala's father Horacio.

"Sadly we are fearing the worst...the sea temperature is so cold at the moment," John Fitzgerald, Chief Officer of Channel Islands Air Search, told AFP.

A tearful Horacio Sala told the press in Progreso, where the player's family lives, that as "the hours go by and I don't know anything, it makes me fear the worst".

"I don't know anything. Nobody spoke to me, not a call from the embassy, the club, nobody," he said. "All I want is for you to find him."

The player's mother, Mercedes, claimed in an interview with Argentine television channel C5N that the plane belonged to the Cardiff chairman, Mehmet Dalman.

Sala, who had been at Nantes since 2015 and had scored 13 goals in all competitions this season, had signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with relegation-threatened Cardiff subject to receiving international clearance.

"We were very shocked upon hearing the news that the plane had gone missing. We expected Emiliano to arrive last night into Cardiff and today was due to be his first day with the team," the Premier League club's executive director Ken Choo said in a statement.

"We continue to pray for positive news."

Cardiff called off a training session planned for Tuesday morning, and stunned supporters gathered outside the club's ground to lay flowers and scarves.

With his former teammates in shock, Nantes had their French Cup tie against third-tier side Entente Sannois Saint-Gratien postponed from Wednesday until Sunday.

Fans hold vigil&nbsp;

Meanwhile, hundreds of fans of his former team gathered for a vigil in the western French city on Tuesday evening, placing flowers, scarves and flags on the water fountain and chanting the striker's name at Place Royale.

"I still have hope, he is a fighter," said Nantes president Waldemar Kita in a tweet published by the Ligue 1 club.

When he put pen to paper at relegation-threatened Cardiff on Saturday, Sala, who also has Italian nationality, said in a statement: "I'm very happy to be here. It gives me great pleasure and I can't wait to start training, meet my new team-mates and get down to work.

"For me it feels special (to be the club's record signing). I have come here wanting to work and to help my team-mates and the club."

Sala's last post on Instagram showed him surrounded by players from Nantes. "La ultima ciao (the last goodbye)," he wrote.

The accident, if confirmed, comes only three months after Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the Thai billionaire owner of Leicester City, died in a helicopter crash that shocked the club and supporters around the world.

Sala began his footballing career at French club Bordeaux, who he joined in 2010, and had loan spells at other French clubs including Orleans, Niort and Caen.

He joined Nantes in 2015 for one million euros and had scored 42 Ligue 1 goals in three and a half seasons at the Stade de la Beaujoire.

Factbox: Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala

After their defeat by title rivals Manchester City earlier this month, Premier League leaders Liverpool could ill-afford another slip-up at home to Crystal Palace but trailing 1-0 at the break they had to face up to that possibility.

Former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson had set Palace up perfectly to do a similar job to the one the south London side delivered in their victory at Manchester City last month.

A deep back-four protected by a defensive five-man midfield was disciplined and designed to frustrate but the ever dangerous Wilfried Zaha and the under-rated Andros Townsend offered a threat on the counter-attack.

The pair combined for Townsend's goal to put Palace 1-0 up and leave Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp with some work to do in the dressing room at the break.

Whatever he said certainly had an impact -- it took 47 seconds for Mo Salah to get Liverpool level and, even after Palace levelled the game at 2-2, the Egyptian was on hand to profit from keeper Julian Speroni's error and put them 3-2 up.

“We talked to each other (at halftime) that we had to be strong mentally because this is a tough time," said Mohamed Salah.

“This is the most important time for us, when you are struggling you have to be strong in mind, so we talked together and the manager also gave us information and we played well and we deserved the game," he said.

NO COMPLACENCY

The 26-year-old added that there was no question of Liverpool, whose performance was far from their best, being complacent against lowly Palace.

“We expected before the game that it was going to be very difficult," said Salah, who has now reached the milestone of 50 Premier League goals in 72 appearances.

“First half they played well and they played well also (in the) second half but they were staying (close) to the box and it was a tough game. But in the end the most important thing for us is the result and we got a good result.

“We conceded three goals, it’s hard a little bit but we have to accept it. This is football and we have to live with that," added the league's top scorer with 16 goals.

Klopp expected to see a fighting approach from his side, who mvoed a provisional seven points clear at the top.

"Nobody should be surprised by the character of the boys. If something was here before I came in, it was character.

"Outstanding character and the work rate was always there and we have to mix it in with a few more elements. The boys are ready to fight for all. It was not the first moment we had to show it but it was pretty special," he said.

Liverpool showed 'mental strength' says goal hero Mohamed Salah

Angry Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri accused his players of lacking determination and being "difficult to motivate" after watching their lacklustre 2-0 defeat away to London rivals Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.

When he eventually emerged from the dressing room the Italian insisted on delivering his post-match comments in his native language in order to fully express his bitter disappointment with his team.

"I prefer to speak Italian today because I want to send a message to my players and I want it to be very clear," the 60-year-old former Napoli coach began before switching to Italian.

The translation would not have made pleasant listening for his players who despite bags of possession at the Emirates were blunt in attack and casual in defence and could have conceded more in a first half dominated by Arsenal.

"I have to say that I'm extremely angry because this defeat was due to our mentality," he said through a translator.

"We played against a team that mentally was far more determined than we were and this is something I can't accept.

"We had the same issue as this at Tottenham and we spoke frankly about that particular loss. I thought we had managed to overcome this issue. But it seems we have an issue of having the right amount of determination and being mentally strong.

"The fact of the matter is I'm finding that this group of players is extremely difficult to motivate."

Chelsea remain in fourth place but are only three points above Arsenal and Manchester United after goals by Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny condemned his side to defeat.

'MORE DETERMINED'

With Liverpool and Manchester City battling for the title, it leaves Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and United scrapping for third and fourth places. Sarri appeared to question whether his side have the stomach for the dogfight.

"Today I could see that one team was quite obviously more determined than the other," he said. "It was not about tactics. From a technical point of view the two teams were pretty much on the same level today. But their higher level of determination was pretty obvious, particularly in both penalty areas.

"(Arsenal) were clinical and we weren't strong enough in defence. Don't get me wrong we could have lost this game anyway but I feel we lost it because of a lack of determination."

Asked if he could change the mentality of his team, Sarri did not sound convinced.

"That's a difficult question," he said. "It seems that as a group of players they are not particularly aggressive from a mental point of view and they don't have the kind of ferocity and that's to do with their characteristics.

"That could take a long time to change. By the same token it could be changed by a new player coming in or one of the old heads assuming responsibility and driving them forward."

With a 1-0 deficit to overturn against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup semi-final second leg on Thursday, Sarri hopes some hard truths can be expressed this week.

"They cannot be afraid to face up to their own responsibilities," he said. "They should be able to come and talk to the coach about mistakes that have been made or issues that have arisen. If any player is afraid of that then they should not be playing at this level.

"I'm very aware that this team will never be known for its battling and fighting qualities, but what we need to be is a team that can adapt and suffer, then play our football."

Furious Maurizio Sarri says Chelsea players lack motivation

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane will be out of action until March after suffering an ankle injury in the weekend's Premier League defeat by Manchester United, the north London club said on Tuesday.

England captain Kane, who is Tottenham's top scorer with 20 goals in all competitions this season, hobbled away from Wembley on Sunday after picking up a knock towards the end of the 1-0 defeat by United.

"Following preliminary assessments, we can confirm that Harry Kane has damaged ligaments in his left ankle," Spurs said in a statement.

"The striker will continue to be monitored by our medical staff as he commences rehabilitation and is expected to return to training in early March."

Kane's absence looks a major blow for Spurs, who are currently third in the league, with their totemic striker now set to miss key derbies in the league as well as big cup ties at home and in Europe.

Kane will be out of the League Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next week, which Tottenham are leading 1-0 thanks to his goal at Wembley in the first match.

He is also likely to miss both legs of the Champions League last-16 clash against Borussia Dortmund.

With Son Heung-min jetting off to represent South Korea at the Asian Cup, manager Mauricio Pochettino's goalscoring options will be tested in the coming weeks.

Spurs, who are nine points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, could also be without Kane when they face top-four rivals Chelsea (Feb. 27) and Arsenal (March 2).

It leaves Pochettino with Lucas Moura and Fernando Llorente to call upon as replacements up front, as the manager has already confirmed the club are not looking to sign players in the January transfer window.

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech to retire at end of season

French midfielder <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Paul+Pogba">Paul Pogba</a> says <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Ole+Gunnar+Solskjaer">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a>'s arrival as interim manager at Manchester United has not only sparked his return to form but also put a smile back on his face.

The 26-year-old -- an integral figure in France's World Cup triumph last year -- has shown the sort of form that United paid a club record £89 million ($114.5 million) in 2016 since Solskjaer arrived last month to replace the sacked Jose Mourinho.

Pogba's relationship with the volatile Mourinho had been pretty much toxic all season -- having already degenerated in the previous campaign -- and he found himself relegated to the substitutes bench.&nbsp;

"Before the coach (Solskjaer) arrived I was in the shadows, on the bench, and I accepted that," he said after the impressive 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

"It is a pleasure to play again. Now I am always smiling."

Solskjaer, who The Sun reported on Tuesday is in pole position to get the job permanently as he has impressed the board and has the unaninmous support of the players, has won six from six since his arrival.

Pogba -- who had been linked with a move away if Mourinho had stayed -- says a lot of that can be put down to the fact Solskjaer knows the club inside out having played for them and then been on the coaching staff.

Pogba was at United in his first spell at the club in 2010 when he first encountered Solskjaer, who had moved on from playing to become reserve team coach.

"It's a pleasure to be reunited with him," said Pogba.

"I knew him from the academy and the reserves, when his nickname was 'Supersub'.

"He is doing a really good job. As a player he knew the mentality of this club. He has come back to help us and it is going very well."

French midfielder Paul Pogba says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's arrival as interim manager at Manchester United has not only sparked his return to form but also put a smile back on his face.

French midfielder Paul Pogba says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's arrival as interim manager at Manchester United has not only sparked his return to form but also put a smile back on his face. The 26-year-old -- an integral figure in France's World Cup triumph last year -- has shown the sort of form that United paid a club record £89 million ($114.5 million) in 2016 since Solskjaer arrived last month to replace the sacked Jose Mourinho. Pogba's relationship with the volatile Mourinho had been pretty much toxic all season -- having already degenerated in the previous campaign -- and he found himself relegated to the substitutes bench. "Before the coach (Solskjaer) arrived I was in the shadows, on the bench, and I accepted that," he said after the impressive 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. "It is a pleasure to play again. Now I am always smiling." Everton avoided a third consecutive Premier League home defeat as Kurt Zouma's header and a late goal by Dominic Calvert-Lewin earned them a flattering 2-0 victory over Bournemouth at a rainy Goodison Park on Sunday.

There were grumblings of discontent from the home fans as Everton were outplayed before the break but Marco Silva's side improved after the interval to move back into the top half of the table.

Bournemouth have now lost six successive away league games.

"I think the result is really harsh on us today, we competed in a really tough game and we had some chances we didn't take but the scoreline doesn't reflect the performance," Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said.

"The fighting spirit and determination was on show, we pressed well and we nullified their threats for large spells."

It was hard to disagree with Howe's assessment, especially before the interval when his eye-catching side dominated.

Young Welsh striker David Brooks was a thorn in the Everton defence and he struck a shot against the base of the post in the 14th minute after being played in by Junior Stanislas, who himself nearly embarrassed England keeper Jordan Pickford with a free kick.

Bournemouth also had two penalty shouts ignored before Everton gradually roused themselves, with defender Michael Keane heading against the crossbar shortly before halftime.

Everton began to click after the break and Richarlison's shot was cleared off the line by Nathan Ake.

The hosts took the lead with only their second effort on target in the 61st minute.

Lucas Digne did well to keep a ball in play and his hoisted cross was headed home powerfully by defender Zouma for his first Everton goal since joining on loan from Chelsea.

Everton's second in stoppage-time, struck home excellently by Calvert-Lewin after great work by Ademola Lookman, was harsh on Bournemouth who will wonder how they went home unrewarded.

Everton boss Silva was especially impressed by the performance of 21-year-old midfielder Lookman who is being linked with a move away from Goodison Park.

"It was a fantastic performance and we know he is at that level, but he will improve more and more," Silva said.

"Even if 2-0 is a tough result to take for them, we deserved the points and our players showed big personality and character as a team."

Bournemouth, who had 16 goal attempts, remained in 12th spot with 27 points from 22 games, nine points above the bottom three. Everton moved into 10th spot on 30 points.

Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri has requested a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/cesc-fabregas-joins-monaco-from-chelsea-189695">replacement for Cesc Fabregas</a> after his side's 2-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle on Saturday.&nbsp;

Spanish midfielder Fabregas has completed the transfer move to French club AS Monaco on Friday.&nbsp;

The move has left Jorginho as the only player Sarri considers capable of playing at the pivot position in his preferred 4-3-3 formation.&nbsp;

While speaking to media, Sarri said, "As you have seen today, today Jorginho was in trouble and on the bench there wasn't a player for that position, so I need a player for that position. I need an option for Jorginho."

Sarri also added that he has "no idea" when the club will get a suitable replacement. &nbsp;

"The club knows very well my opinion. I need a player there, so it depends on the club decision I think. I cannot do anything more," Sarri added.&nbsp;

Apart from talking about the transfer activities, Sarri has warned his Chelsea players to improve their mentality after Willian's sublime strike sealed a hard-fought win over struggling Newcastle.&nbsp;

He told reporters, "Today we started very well I think, for 10 minutes, but after the goal, I think we thought 'now it's easy,' but it wasn't. And so we slept for 20-25 minutes and at the end of the first half, we were in trouble."&nbsp;

"Better in the second half but we need to improve in the mental reaction because, after our first goal, something happened," added Sarri.&nbsp;

Fourth-placed Chelsea extended their advantage over fifth-placed Arsenal to six points.&nbsp;

Declan Rice's first goal for West Ham United earned his side a deserved first home victory over Arsenal for 13 years on Saturday -- the youngster's 48th-minute strike securing a 1-0 win at the London Stadium.

Arsenal began brightly and then had a flurry of chances after falling behind but West Ham were good value for the three points as they put a dent in Arsenal's top-four hopes.

Former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri, rebuilding his career at West Ham after a doping ban, was at the heart of much of their best work on his Premier League debut for the club.

It was the Frenchman's neat lay-off that allowed 19-year-old midfielder Rice the space to curl a superb shot past Bernd Leno.

The victory pushed West Ham into eighth place, before the rest of the weekend's fixtures, and after a difficult start manager Manuel Pellegrini appears to be turning West Ham into a side capable of challenging for the European places.

The Chilean, who steered Manchester City to the title, was happy with his former player Nasri who was given a resounding ovation when he was substituted midway through the second half.

"It was a good performance by Samir, he kept the pace for 65 minutes," Pellegrini told Sky Sports. "I've spoken to him and told him I'm sure he can be the player he was."

Rice had already headed wide before halftime but the 19-year-old was lethal the next time an opportunity arrived.

Felipe Anderson's surge down the right and cross saw the ball land at the feet of Nasri who had the vision to shift it to Rice who finished like a top-class striker -- celebrating his big moment wildly with his teammates.

Special Moment

"I can't really put it into words," said Rice ahead of his birthday on Monday. "Usually I would pick a pass but I was in the box so I thought why not take it on? It went in the top corner and we beat Arsenal so it's a special moment for me."

Striker Alexandre Lacazette had a double chance for the visitors early on, forcing a save from former Arsenal keeper Łukasz Fabianski before firing the rebound over the bar.

West Ham then took control with Nasri dragging a shot wide and then setting up influential Brazilian midfielder Anderson to fire a daisy-cutter just past the post.

At the other end, Matteo Guendouzi's 25-metre effort flew just wide but Arsenal struggled to exert any sustained pressure.

After Rice's goal Arsenal did manage to raise the tempo with Alex Iwobi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang going close but West Ham weathered the storm and were worthy winners.

Fifth-placed Arsenal failed to score for the first time in 21 league matches and have now lost consecutive away games. They could find themselves six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea by the time they host their London rivals next weekend.

"We didn't impose ourselves on the game but we had enough (quality) players to win the game," manager Unai Emery said.

Watford substitute Tom Cleverley volleyed a brilliant 74th-minute winner as they came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.

Palace survived two shots against the same post in the third minute and went ahead seven minutes before halftime with a Craig Cathcart own goal in a goalmouth melee following a corner.

Defender Cathcart equalised in the 67th minute when he beat his marker James Tomkins to the ball at a corner and headed past substitute goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey at the far post with Watford’s first effort on target.

Cleverley then stunned Palace with the winner seven minutes later, volleying Tomkins’s clearance into the top corner.

Watford moved up to seventh on 32 points while Palace are 14th on 22, four points above the relegation zone.

Watford could have gone ahead after three minutes when Gerard Deulofeu hit the far post with a low shot from the right that beat Vicente Guaita’s dive and Roberto Pereyra hit the same upright with a follow-up shot from the left.

Palace were left to rue poor finishing when James McArthur failed to turn in Wilfried Zaha’s cross from the left when he was almost on the line in the 70th minute.

Ben Foster made decisive saves to frustrate Zaha and Luka Milivojevic.

Tough Defeat

Goal-line technology was needed for the opener to be given, with the ball having gone in off Cathcart’s thigh, handing Palace a lead that had manager Roy Hodgson believing another victory was on the way.

"Tough to lose any game especially at home," Hodgson said. "I was hoping we could get that elusive third straight victory.

"We started the second half brightly. The game evened out and while the game was still in the balance Tom Cleverley scored that wonderful volley."

Zaha should have doubled Palace's advantage just after halftime but saw his effort saved and that proved costly as Watford turned the match on its head.

Cathcart’s header made amends for his own goal before Cleverley’s first Premier League strike since October 2017 earned Watford the points.

"After conceding the first goal it was more difficult but we knew this team were conceding more goals in this period and it was our moment," Watford manager Javi Gracia said.

"We created enough chances to win the game."

Watford come from behind to beat Crystal Palace

Burnley beat Fulham 2-1 at Turf Moor on Saturday thanks to two own goals to make it three straight league wins for Sean Dyche's side and leave the visitors deep in relegation danger.

The Clarets won without a single shot of their own on target and rode their luck in a typical scrap between two teams fighting against the drop, played in cold, windy and wet conditions.

German international Andre Schurrle put Fulham, without an away win this season, ahead in brilliant fashion in the second minute, bringing down a long ball from Denis Odoi and blasting, first time, past Tom Heaton.

But Burnley got back on level terms in the 20th minute when Jeff Hendrick's low drive was turned into his own net by Fulham defender Joe Bryan.

Three minutes later and Hendrick had forced another own goal -- his drive headed in by Odoi to put the Clarets 2-1 up.

Fulham defender Calum Chambers headed against the bar just before the break -- a sign of what was to come from Claudio Ranieri's side in the second half.

Burnley defender James Tarkowski had to clear a Luciano Vietto drive off the line shortly after the interval and Fulham had most of the pressure after the break without creating many clear-cut chances.

Aside from some moments of quality from teenage winger Dwight McNeil, Burnley relied on hard work and long balls. The three points mean they move up to 15th place, while Fulham are next to bottom on 14 points, five points from safety.

"This period is very strange. We play well, we deserve minimum a draw," said Ranieri.

"The second half we play much better, move the ball quickly. They shoot at goal two or three times and one time they save on the line. These episodes change the music," added the Italian.

"There are good moments and bad moments. We never give up, we continue to believe that at the end we will be safe."

Dyche conceded his side had been lucky but felt they were due some good fortune.

"We have had a bit of luck today with the own goals but we haven't had much this season," he said.

The nine points from three games, including wins over West Ham and Huddersfield, has changed the mood at Turf Moor even if Dyche's side are still far from clear of trouble.

"It brings a feeling. There are no guarantees but it is a big shift for us. There is still more work to be done. Every game is important in the Premier League, no matter who you are playing. Usually you have to play on right until the last game," he said.

Fulham sunk by two own goals at Burnley

Liverpool went seven points clear at the top of the Premier League and bounced back from two successive defeats in all competitions after a Mohamed Salah penalty gave them a 1-0 win at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion on Saturday.

The result put Liverpool on 57 points from 22 games, seven ahead of closest rivals Manchester City who are at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday. Third-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have 48 points, host Manchester United on Sunday.

Manager Juergen Klopp was pleased with the outcome and the performance which he described as a "really nice song if not an opera of football".

"We learned from the first half and the second half was better," Klopp told the BBC.

"It was a mature performance from my side. This season it is quite a new skill and I'd like us to keep that.

"It was very hard but that is how it is. Everyone knows how difficult it is to go to Brighton."

Liverpool were clinical if unimpressive on the south coast, having lost 2-1 at City in their previous league outing before being beaten by Wolves in the FA Cup third round by the same scoreline.

After a dour first half, Salah produced a moment of trademark individual skill to win the spot-kick he converted five minutes into the second half after Pascal Gross had fouled him following the Egyptian's neat footwork in the penalty area.

Xherdan Shaqiri, who got a rare start on the right flank in a reshuffled 4-2-3-1 formation, missed Liverpool's best chance in the opening half when he headed just wide after Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross.

As Brighton threw men forward in the closing stages, Liverpool twice came close to scoring again with the home team's goalkeeper David Button parrying Roberto Firmino's effort before Salah misfired wide from five metres.

Klopp singled out Alexander-Arnold, who picked up an ankle injury in the warm-up but played through the pain for the full 90 minutes.

"It was a shock in that moment," said the German. "It was the last situation of the warming up. He wants to play so he doesn't say immediately.

"On the way in we thought he couldn't play so James Milner did a warm-up but it was a brilliant decision from the medical staff and Trent. He played well."

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery said that the team "lost a very great opportunity to take three points" after his side <a href="http://cms.wionews.com/sports/declan-rices-first-west-ham-goal-enough-to-sink-arsenal-189930">lost 1-0 at West Ham</a> in the Premier League on Saturday.&nbsp;

Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas has completed his move to French team AS Monaco from Chelsea, the clubs said on Friday.

The 31-year-old, who played for Arsenal from 2003-11 and Chelsea from 2014, won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.

“Cesc Fabregas has today completed a permanent transfer to Monaco,” Premier League Chelsea said on their website as Monaco confirmed he had signed with them until June, 2022.

Fabregas won two league titles with Chelsea and one Spanish La Liga crown during his 2011-14 stint at Barcelona.

“We thank Cesc for his wonderful service and wish him the very best of luck for the next chapter in what has been a fantastic career,” Chelsea said in a statement.

Fabregas scored 22 goals for the London club in 198 appearances.

Monaco, managed by Fabregas's former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry, are struggling second from bottom of the Ligue 1 standings ahead of a crunch game against neighbours Olympique de Marseille on Sunday.

"It is a great pleasure to join Monaco, it is a new project for me. It is a quality squad with young players and a young coach," said Fabregas, referring to former France striker Henry.

“I am looking forward to starting, we have a big game against Marseille on Sunday. I am very excited.”

Paul Pogba will be fit to return from injury for Manchester United's Premier League match at Tottenham this weekend, interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Thursday.

The France midfielder linked up late with his team-mates for a warm-weather training camp in Dubai this week after being injured in a challenge by Jonjo Shelvey during the 2-0 victory at Newcastle on January 2.

Pogba missed last Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup victory over Reading as a result of the knock, but trained well in the United Arab Emirates, according to Solskjaer.

"He looked OK towards the end, so he will be fit. He did have some problems but he came through last couple of sessions well, so he should be OK," the Norwegian said.

Solskjaer has made a perfect start as United's coach since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho on December 19, winning each of his first five matches in charge.

The former United striker, who is on loan from Norwegian club Molde until the end of the season, has made clear since his return to Old Trafford he would love the manager's job on a permanent basis.

However, his opponent on Sunday, Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino, is believed by many observers to be the likeliest person to get the United job.

Solskjaer praised the Argentinian and justified the reports.

"He has done a very good job. That speculation is there for a reason -– because he has done well -– but it's not my job to rate managers. My focus is on me and my team."

Tottenham test

The interim boss, though, has rejected the idea that this match represents his first serious challenge in charge of United, following wins over Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Reading.

"We've had tests. Newcastle away is a test and the first game was a test as to how everyone reacted. The first home game with the crowd is a test," he said.

"We are not going to get as many chances to attack against these as we had before so when we have the ball we have to be ready to play well with it and we have to use the whole pitch because Wembley is a decent size pitch as well," he added.

One of United's biggest test will be containing the threat of Tottenham striker Harry Kane, the joint-leading scorer in this season's Premier League, with 14 goals.

"He's not bad is he? He is a fantastic goal scorer and one of the best in the world, but I have got a couple that I'm happy to work with," Solskjaer said

"He is a top professional. Sure, whoever plays with him and trains with him can talk more about him, but from the outside he is a fantastic finisher," the 1999 treble winner said.

Solskjaer, meanwhile, revealed defender Marcos Rojo has returned to his native Argentina as he continues to recover from a leg injury that has kept him out for a month.

"He has gone back to Argentina for a while because of his injury. How long will he be out for? How long is a piece of rope? For him it was mentally important to go away and come back fresh again."

Stoke City have appointed Luton Town coach Nathan Jones as their new manager after the sacking of Gary Rowett, the Championship club (tier-two) said on Wednesday.

Jones led Luton to promotion from the fourth division last season and the club are in the hunt to go up again this year, sitting second in League One.

The 45-year-old Welshman will take over from Rowett, who was dismissed on Tuesday after a run of one win in six matches across all competitions for the club relegated from the Premier League last season.

"Nathan is an incredibly driven and passionate individual and we are delighted to have secured his services for Stoke City," Stoke owners John Coates and Peter Coates said in a statement.

"We have been following Nathan's career for some time and when we met him were hugely impressed with his clear vision as to how he will achieve success at Stoke."

Before taking over at Luton, Jones worked as assistant manager at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion under Oscar Garcia and first-team coach under both Sami Hyypia and Chris Hughton.

Jones arrives at the bet365 stadium after the Stoke agreed a compensation package with Luton.

The Staffordshire-based club were expected to make a swift return to the Premier League having spent the last 10 seasons in the top division, finishing ninth for three straight seasons from 2013-14.

However, the poor form that saw Stoke relegated has spilled over in the second division as they slipped to 14th in the standings after eight wins in 26 matches.

Jones' first game in charge at Stoke will be a league trip to Brentford on Saturday.

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Manchester+City">Manchester City</a> coach <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Pep+Guardiola">Pep Guardiola</a> has defended his side's youth development record after academy graduate Brahim Diaz left for Real Madrid, saying he only wants to work with players who are committed to the club.

The 19-year-old Diaz completed a move to the Spanish capital on Monday, following in the footsteps of English winger Jadon Sancho, who left City in 2017 for Borussia Dortmund to make a huge impact in the German Bundesliga.

City failed to keep both players at the Etihad Stadium due to a lack of first-team opportunities but Guardiola said youngsters must be patient if they are to make a breakthrough at any of the Europe's elite clubs.

"They win the opportunity (to play) on the field but you have to take a look at all the big clubs in Europe how many young players are in the first team," Guardiola told a news conference ahead of City's League Cup semi-final first-leg against Burton Albion on Wednesday.

"The young players need time. David Silva, for example, was loaned to others before he became what he is right now, before he came us. Some have patience, some trust what the club want to do, and some don't."

England under-21 playmaker Phil Foden committed his long-term future to City last month, having received a public backing from Guardiola this season.

"Like I said many times, I don't want people that don't want to stay here," the Spanish coach added.

"We did with Brahim everything we have done with Phil (Foden) and with Jadon - important players and we did absolutely everything. The only one who decides to stay is Phil."

Foden is set to feature against Burton with Guardiola having almost his full squad available to cope with the demands of the Premier League and domestic cup competitions this month.

Guardiola said French full back Benjamin Mendy, who is on the sidelines with a knee injury, could return to first-team action in two-to-three weeks.

"He's training alone," Guardiola added. "Two weeks, three weeks maybe (until he returns). Everybody else is fit."

City will return to league action against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday as they continue to chase Liverpool, who are four points clear at the top of the table.

Premier League leaders Liverpool paid the price for fielding a weakened side as they were knocked out in the third round of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

The Merseysiders fell behind to a Raul Jimenez goal on the break in the 38th minute, the Mexican firing home confidently after Diogo Jota robbed James Milner.

Belgian forward Divock Origi brought Liverpool, seven-times FA Cup winners, level in the 51st minute with a well-placed effort from the edge of the area.

But Wolves grabbed the winner four minutes later when Ruben Neves struck a superb low drive from 30 yards out.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp fielded a much-changed line-up, including two teenage debutantes in midfielder Curtis Jones and full-back Rafael Camacho.

The line-up was further weakened in the sixth minute when central defender Dejan Lovren had to go off with a hamstring injury and was replaced by 16-year-old Dutchman Ki-Jana Hoever.

Clearly disappointed with Lovren's injury, especially given he has two other central defenders Joe Gomez and Joel Matip currently sidelined, Klopp said: “I am not sure what you all would have said if immediately from the beginning if our centre-half situation was Fabinho and Ki-Jana; then probably a few very smart people would tell me that I don’t respect the competition or whatever."

Xherdan Shaqiri went close to an equaliser for Liverpool in the 69th minute but his curling free-kick was pushed on to the post superbly by Wolves keeper John Ruddy.

A minute later Klopp brought on Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah but Wolves were able to hold firm and maintain their lead.

The reward for Wolves is a fourth round tie against the winner of the replay between Shrewsbury Town and Stoke City.

Wolves's Portuguese manager Nuno Espirito Santo was delighted with the way his team, ninth in the Premier League, had handled Liverpool.

"I am very pleased, the team performed very well in a tough game. We took our chances," he said.

Stoke City have sacked manager Gary Rowett with immediate effect after eight months in charge, the English Championship (second-tier) club announced on Tuesday.

The decision comes from the Stoke hierarchy after a run of one win in six matches across all competitions.

Rowett left Derby County to join Stoke in the close-season as the club eyed an immediate return to the Premier League having been relegated after 10 years in the top division, where they had mostly been a comfortable mid-table team.

However, instead of dominating England's second-tier, Stoke's struggles have continued as they have won just eight of their 26 league fixtures.

"Stoke City have terminated the contract of manager Gary Rowett," the club said in a statement.

"Members of his immediate coaching staff have also left the bet365 Stadium.

"The club would like to thank Gary and his staff for their efforts over the past eight months.

"A new managerial appointment will be made as swiftly as possible but in the meantime Rory Delap, Kevin Russell and Andy Quy will take charge of first-team affairs."

Gary Rowett sacked by Stoke City after poor run of results

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is unsure whether midfielder Cesc Fabregas has played his last game for the club but he feels the Spaniard must leave for the good of his career.

Fabregas appeared to say goodbye to Chelsea after Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge, where he applauded all sides of the ground.

The 31-year-old's contract expires at the end of the season, with British media reporting the player is close to securing a move to AS Monaco this month.

"I don't know if he is able to play tomorrow because in the last match he had cramp in the calf so he needs to rest I think," Sarri told reporters ahead of Chelsea's League Cup semi-final first-leg clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

"Yesterday he had a free day for the injury but I don't know (if he is going to Monaco). I can say only my opinion, I don't know the decision of the club. In my opinion he needs to go."

Fabregas, who has won two Premier League titles since joining Chelsea in 2014, has struggled for first-team opportunities under Sarri, making six appearances in the league this season.

"You know very well the situation and in our club there is a rule, the renewal for players over 30 is usually for a year," Sarri added.

"He has an offer for two years and I don't want a very important player like Cesc to be unhappy."

Sarri ruled out Ruben Loftus-Cheek from the Spurs clash at Wembley Stadium after the midfielder was substituted against Forest with a back injury.

The Italian coach said the club will look to boost their midfield options if Fabregas leaves this month.

"Now with the midfield we are in trouble because I don't know about the situation with Loftus-Cheek, if it's serious or not," Sarri added.

"Without Cesc we only have five so we need a replacement."

Chelsea's Maurizio Sarri backs Cesc Fabregas exit amid talk of Monaco switch

Liverpool manager <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Jurgen+Klopp">Jurgen Klopp</a> admits the "outstanding" Naby Keita has yet to reproduce the form that persuaded him to sign the midfielder -- but says he has a bright future at Anfield.

The 23-year-old started his Liverpool career brightly and has made 18 appearances so far this season but he has failed to feature in the past three matches for the Premier League leaders.

However, Klopp is prepared to give the Guinea international, who arrived from RB Leipzig during the summer, time to adapt.

"I spoke to Naby. Everything is fine. I am completely happy with Naby," said the Liverpool boss.

"Could he be a bit more confident in the games? Yes. Is he exactly the player in his best time at Leipzig? No. He is still adapting, that's how it is.

"Everyone saw at the beginning of the season how brilliant he played."

Klopp said minor injury problems had held the player back but he was a welcome addition to the squad.

"It is so good and I am looking forward to our common future," he said. "You see it every day, wow, there is so much to come and there is so much influence he can have on each game."

He added: "There is really no doubt about the boy, he is an outstanding player."

Keita is likely to get a start in the FA Cup tie at Wolves on Monday as one of a number of players in need of pitch time.

Another of those is Adam Lallana, who has also had his struggles with injuries.

"I can tell you it is a good opportunity for all the players," added Klopp. "Adam is actually in outstanding shape. It's unbelievable. It was close in the last game whether we started him or not. He is really, really good."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits the "outstanding" Naby Keita has yet to reproduce the form that persuaded him to sign the midfielder -- but says he has a bright future at Anfield. "Everyone saw at the beginning of the season how brilliant he played." Klopp said minor injury problems had held the player back but he was a welcome addition to the squad. "It is so good and I am looking forward to our common future," he said. "You see it every day, wow, there is so much to come and there is so much influence he can have on each game." He added: "There is really no doubt about the boy, he is an outstanding player." Keita is likely to get a start in the FA Cup tie at Wolves on Monday as one of a number of players in need of pitch time. Another of those is Adam Lallana, who has also had his struggles with injuries. "I can tell you it is a good opportunity for all the players," added Klopp. "Adam is actually in outstanding shape. It's unbelievable. It was close in the last game whether we started him or not. He is really, really good."

Naby Keita still adapting to life at Liverpool, says Jurgen Klopp

Premier League champions Manchester City began their FA Cup campaign with a 7-0 thrashing of Rotherham on Sunday but Fulham, battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League, were beaten 2-1 by fourth-tier Oldham.

Barnet ensured there would be a non-league presence in the fourth round with a 1-0 win away to second-tier Championship club Sheffield United. &nbsp;

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola may have made eight changes from the team that beat Premier League leaders Liverpool on Thursday but still fielded a strong side for the visit of Championship club Rotherham, with Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus all starting as playmaker Kevin De Bruyne returned from injury.

De Bruyne played in Sterling for a 12th-minute opener and City then scored twice in the closing stages of the first half.

Phil Foden, the England Under-21 international, got on the end of a cross from Ilkay Gundogan in the 43rd minute before Rotherham defender Semi Ajayi turned the ball into his own net.&nbsp;

Jesus made it 4-0 early in the second half before Mahrez, Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane added further goals.

Denis Odoi put Fulham ahead in the 52nd minute at Craven Cottage but Sam Sturridge drew Oldham level with a penalty before Callum Lang's header two minutes from time sealed a comeback win.

Daniel Iversen compounded Fulham's misery by saving an Aleksandar Mitrovic penalty just moments earlier.

Elsewhere, Barnet beat Championship high-flyers Sheffield United thanks to Shaquile Coulthirst's 21st-minute penalty.

Watford manager Javi Gracia changed his entire starting side from the team that drew 3-3 at Bournemouth, with Venezuela forward Adalberto Penaranda making his Hornets debut against non-league Woking.

But hopes of Woking, 110 places adrift of the Hornets, enjoying a shock win suffered a setback when Will Hughes curled in a 13th-minute shot from the edge of the area.&nbsp;

Watford made it 2-0 16 minutes from time when Troy Deeney scored from close range.

Millwall came from a goal down to beat Championship rivals Hull 2-1, substitute Shane Ferguson scoring twice inside the closing eight minutes.

QPR beat Championship leaders Leeds by the same scoreline, Jake Bidwell scoring a 75th-minute winner for the west London club.

Fourth-tier Newport County are at home to Premier League Leicester in Sunday's 1630 GMT kick-off.

On Saturday, FA Cup holders Chelsea cruised to a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in what seems certain to have been Cesc Fabregas's final match for the Blues.

It was the same scoreline as Manchester United beat Reading to make it five wins out of five under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Arsenal, the record 13-times FA Cup winners, won 3-0 at Blackpool, West Ham beat Birmingham 2-0 but Everton had to work hard to see off Lincoln 2-1.

Saturday also saw Championship club Bristol City beat top-flight basement club Huddersfield 1-0.

Elsewhere, in an all-Premier League clash, Brighton won 3-1 away to south coast rivals Bournemouth.

Second division Derby, managed by former England midfielder Frank Lampard, came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Premier League strugglers Southampton.

Newcastle were also held to a draw, 1-1 against second-tier Blackburn.

Premier League leaders Liverpool will complete a third round that started with Tottenham's 7-0 thrashing of Tranmere on Friday when they travel to top-flight rivals Wolves on Monday.

Manchester City score seven in FA Cup stroll, Oldham knock out Fulham

Dele Alli has admitted his Tottenham Hotspur team were guilty of complacency in the shock defeat by Wolves that derailed their Premier League title bid.

But the England midfielder has insisted there will be no repeat of that error as Mauricio Pochettino's team chase silverware on four fronts in 2019.

That task will be made harder by the impending loss of in-form South Korean international Son Heung-min, who will be absent for a month as he represents his country at the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

But having ended 2018 with that shock 3-1 home loss to Wolves in the league, Spurs responded with a 3-0 victory at Cardiff and Friday's 7-0 FA Cup success at fourth-tier Tranmere Rovers.

That performance on Merseyside suggested Alli and his team-mates had learnt a painful lesson from the Wolves defeat.

"I don't think the manager needed to say too much after that, to be honest, as players we were disappointed," he said.

"We had been in great form before that and maybe we got a little bit carried away with ourselves.

"They're a fantastic team and maybe we just thought we would win the game. But you can't do that if you want to win things and be a top, top team.

"You have to be clinical and ruthless in every game and you can't afford to take your foot off the gas and we all had a look at ourselves after and we know we can't let that happen."

In the short term, Tottenham move onto a League Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Tuesday and also have the Champions League last 16, against Borussia Dortmund,

to look forward to next month.

'Unbelievable' Son

But after a Sunday, January 13th, home league game with a revitalised Manchester United, Spurs will face that schedule without Son who was inspirational at Tranmere where he scored one and set up two goals in a nine-minute spell at the start of the second half.

"'Sonny' leaving any team would be a great miss because he's a great player but, at the same time, we've got players that have been working hard and are ready to come in," said Alli.

"He's obviously in great form and it will be sad to see him go but he will be back and we just keep going." Alli added: "I think seeing him every day in training, playing with him in games, you can see the quality he has.

"He's an unbelievable player, with both feet, and has an eye for goals and he can produce magic out of nothing. So no one's really surprised to see him in this form because he is a fantastic player and has amazing qualities.

"But who knows? Lucas (Moura) is a fantastic player as well, or whoever the manager decodes to put in. It will change for different games, the team always does, and everyone has been working hard."

Alli's own form heading into the new year capped off a memorable 2018 in which he emerged as one of the biggest stars of the English game -- a year he is keen to build upon in 2019 as he attempts to end Spurs' decade-plus wait for a trophy.

"As players you want to get as far into the cup as we can, hopefully win it. We want to win trophies, that's our aim and we've been playing well, we've been getting quite far in recent years without quite having the finishing product at the end and not getting over the line," he said.

"But it's about time for us, as players, we need to start winning things." As for his individual aims, Alli said: "I want to keep improving as a player and as a person as well but I'm not going to stop.

"I'm going to keep learning and try to be better than I was last year and the year before that."&nbsp;

Dele Alli vows Spurs 'won't get carried away again' as Son absence looms

Huddersfield Town have signed midfielder Jason Puncheon on loan from Crystal Palace for the rest of the season, the Premier League clubs said on Friday.

Puncheon has struggled for game time at Palace this season, making five substitute appearances in the league and starting three League Cup games, but Huddersfield manager David Wagner backed the versatile 32-year-old to hit the ground running.

"It's important our additions in January have the ability to arrive and make an immediate impact in our team, which I'm sure Jason can," Wagner said.

"He's played in this division for nearly a decade now and knows what it takes to be successful... as well as being a very good player, he's a great character."

Huddersfield are bottom of the standings with 10 points from 21 matches and Wagner believes the former Southampton, Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers player will add much-needed experience in their quest to remain in the top division.

"He's been the captain of Palace and is a real leader in the dressing room, which is something we wanted to add too," the German manager added.

"He's now totally fit after the knee injury that he suffered last season and he's been very keen to come here and show that he is still capable of performing at the top level, which is great news for us."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested he will be judged on playing style rather than trophies if he is to land the Manchester United manager's job on a full-time basis.

Solskjaer, appointed as interim boss last month to replace the sacked Jose Mourinho, has made clear that he would love to stay at Old Trafford beyond the end of this season, when his temporary arrangement is set to expire.

The former United striker, on a managerial loan from Norwegian club Molde, has not spoken to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward about a longer stay.

However, he feels that the key to being seen as a success is to return to the attractive, attacking football that the club played for much of Alex Ferguson's near 27-year reign as manager.

Ferguson won 38 trophies before retiring in 2013 but his United team were also renowned for their positive football, which many fans felt went missing in the final year of Mourinho's reign.

Solskjaer, when asked what would constitute success and improve his chances of getting the job permanently, said: "If we get to the summer and people are talking about the way Manchester United are playing.

"If the style we're playing, it reminds us of Sir Alex's team, if it reminds us of the successful times."

Solskjaer said he is keen to win trophies this season but suggested that the style, for now, was more important.

"It has to start with the way we play because results you cannot control," he said. "You can control how you approach the game and how you play.

Trophy hunt

"And of course, it's about trophies -- if you can get to the final of the FA Cup and get a trophy. Let's see in May if it's a success or not."

Solskjaer has won his first four matches at the helm, including a 2-0 victory at Newcastle on Wednesday, and hopes to extend that run when Championship strugglers Reading visit Old Trafford in the FA Cup on Saturday.

However, he expects there to be setbacks as he attempts to improve United's Premier League position from sixth over the second half of the season.

"When you win games of football, you're happy," he said. "There will be tougher times coming, there will be tougher games coming up, we know that.

"I thought the Newcastle game was a great example of us not just getting the first goal and sitting back to counter. We had to work for it and defend."

One of Solskjaer's priorities is to improve the players' fitness, something he plans to work on when he takes his squad to Dubai for a warm-weather training break after the Reading match.

The former United striker said that high-intensity fitness training was a key part of United's success under Ferguson, allowing them to build momentum late in the season when chasing trophies.

"We can get fitter and we have to do that through the training sessions here but Dubai is a good chance because now is the first time we get a week of work together," he said.

"I still have pictures in my mind every January, the gaffer (Ferguson) with the stopwatch timing us -- all of those runs," he added.

"That stood us in good stead towards the end of the season, so it is a time to work hard. Even though we've got plenty of games, we need to work."

Things we learned from Manchester City vs Liverpool

The four-point lead Liverpool have at the top of the Premier League even after a 2-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City on Thursday was still impressive given their lack of title-winning experience, according to manager Juergen Klopp.&nbsp;

The match in Manchester was billed by many as an early title decider, where a Liverpool victory would have given them a 10-point lead at the top with 17 games to go, having played City home and away.&nbsp;

However, goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane, either side of a Robert Firmino equaliser, ended Liverpool's unbeaten Premier League season and moved City to within touching distance of top spot.

"I have so much faith in players you cannot imagine," Klopp said. "If somebody would have said after both games against Man City that we would have had a four point lead I would have paid good money for this, as I thought it was not possible.&nbsp;

"If we would have won the title five times in the last 10 years, then things would be different. We don't have the experience like this. We are still in a very good position so I have happy for this.

"I knew that City could beat us, that is not new. They beat us 5-0 last year. It did not have anything to do with mental strength on one side or the other. It was just unlucky."

Klopp was also unhappy with one decision that did not go his side's way, when City captain Vincent Kompany received only a yellow card for a lunge at Mohamed Salah, a decision Klopp was not in agreement with.

"I loved him (Kompany) already when he was at Hamburg," Klopp added. "But situations like this happen. A player goes to ground, and he took the risk. If Mo (Salah) is on his feet, not jumping, then we all know what happen. Mo can go through. I don't blame anybody.

"We were here last season there was a red card (against Mane), and nobody thought about it. Yes it was red card, but did he want it? He did not even see him? Kompany saw him, hit him, and you can make your own opinion."
