Smalling's previous deal ran out at the end of the season.

United manager Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to buy another centre-back, but welcomed the news of Smalling's stay.

"I am very happy Chris has signed a new contract," said Mourinho in a club statement.

Crystal Palace moved five points clear of the bottom three in the Premier League when Luka Milivojevic scored to give the south London club a 1-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday.

Roy Hodgson's side had suffered a nightmare spell in the top flight, winning just one of their previous 11 Premier League games, but they broke the Wilfried Zaha curse by triumphing for the first time in 14 games without their influential forward.

Leicester had the ball in the Palace net after 27 minutes but Jamie Vardy's effort was disallowed.

The former England striker made the most of a poor touch from Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita on his Premier League debut and slotted the ball into the back of the net but he was adjudged to have fouled the keeper.

Leicester were made to pay as Milivojevic put Palace into the lead after 39 minutes with a stunning strike.

The Serbian midfielder picked up the ball 25 metres from goal and fired a powerful shot which flew past Kasper Schmeichel into the top left-hand corner.

Another Vardy shot was kept out after 79 minutes. Kelechi Iheanacho fed the ball into the path of the Leicester forward who, from a tight angle, looked to have equalised but his effort was pushed on to the inside of the post by Guaita and back into the arms of the Palace keeper.

Crystal Palace beat Leicester City to earn crucial points

Liverpool may be top of the Premier League but Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said that it is trophies in the cabinet that count ahead of the sides' showdown at Anfield on Sunday.

Klopp's side remain the only unbeaten team in the league this season, but the German has yet to clinch an honour in his three years on Merseyside.

United languish 16 points behind their rivals in sixth place, but Mourinho led the Old Trafford outfit to Europa League and League Cup victories in his first season in Manchester in 2017.

"I think trophies matter, it matters, especially when you have the potential to fight for trophies and especially when you clearly say the objective is to win the trophy," the Portuguese told a news conference on Friday.

"I think Juergen told already they want to win the Premier League, is their objective," he added.

United travel to their rivals with a depleted squad after their injury list grew in their 2-1 defeat by Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Marcos Rojo was forced off at halftime, joining the likes of Victor Lindelof and Alexis Sanchez on the sidelines.

Defenders Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling, Matteo Darmian and attacker Anthony Martial were all due to be assessed in training on Friday having missed the trip to Spain. Yet the manager has said that Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young are all set to start at Anfield.

United's last two trips to Anfield have resulted in goalless draws after Mourinho adopted an ultra cautious approach, yet the Portuguese said his side are capable of fighting for victory despite their injuries.

"We know that we are going to play against the leaders, against a team on a high, but we have our qualities, we have our potential," he said.

"Even with the problems we have and the doubts in terms of team choice, of tactics, approach, philosophy, we have doubts about everything.

"We are going to arrive with the players we have available and going to have a team capable of going there and fight for the victory."

Liverpool are looking to pick up a sixth successive victory in the league. However, Klopp has yet to get the better of Mourinho's United having not beaten them since the Portuguese took charge in 2016, drawing three and losing once.

The fixture is never short of drama and Mourinho usually enjoys the big occasion as an underdog, as he showed in last month's impressive 2-1 victory over Juventus in Turin.

Trophies matter, insists Jose Mourinho ahead of Liverpool clash

The alleged racist abuse of Manchester City's Raheem Sterling by Chelsea fans has rekindled bitter memories for his club mate Ilkay Guendogan, who suffered similar treatment during the World Cup earlier this year.

Sterling was shouted at by supporters behind the goal in City's 2-0 Premier League defeat last Saturday and Chelsea later banned four fans from matches pending a police investigation.

Guendogan, who is of Turkish descent, said he can empathise, having faced jeers in warm-up games ahead of the World Cup after he and former international team mate Mesut Ozil were photographed with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

Ozil quit international soccer in July following Germany's group-stage exit in Russia citing "racism and disrespect", but Guendogan has continued to play for the national team.

"It's not easy because I lived it in the summer as well. I know how that feels and it hurts," Guendogan told reporters.

"This is obviously something that doesn't belong anywhere in the world ... we have no other choice but to stay strong and try to go through that period and try to do our best on the pitch. Yeah, to keep being successful, that's what matters."

Sterling, however, did not take the alleged abuse lying down and posted a statement on Instagram last Sunday in which he said newspapers were fuelling racism in soccer due to their negative portrayal of young black players.

His comments were echoed by the Professional Footballers' Association and former players.

"I think he (Sterling) got a lot of support this week," Guendogan said. "I think the way Chelsea reacted was good.

Ilkay Guendogan feels Man City team mate Sterling's pain

Maurizio Sarri has described the alleged racist abuse of Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling by Chelsea fans as "disgusting" and condemned discrimination in any form in his first public comments on the incident.

Chelsea said on Monday they had banned four supporters from their matches pending a police investigation into the incident which occurred during City's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.

"First of all, I want to say that I condemn any form of discrimination, of course. I think that I have to stop here," the Chelsea manager told reporters ahead of Thursday's Europa League match against Vidi in Budapest.

"Because there is an investigation so I think it's better not to say something more. Of course, my opinion is that I condemn every sort of discrimination.

"It was disgusting. You know very well my opinion, the opinion of the club, but now we have to go on."

Sterling posted a statement on Instagram last Sunday in which he said newspapers were fuelling racism in soccer due to their negative portrayal of young black players in comparison to their white counterparts.

His comments were echoed by the Professional Footballers' Association and former players.

One of the Chelsea supporters who has been banned admitted directing abuse at Sterling but said the vitriol was 'not racist in nature'.

Sterling's England teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek said a strong response was needed to rid the sport of the problem.

"It doesn't happen a lot in England, but obviously still happens. Most people don't like this and it needs to be out of the game as quick as possible," Loftus-Cheek said.

"He (Sterling) was right to say what he said. I don't think it should be in the game or anywhere. Him speaking out was the right thing. If it happened to me I would do the same."

Alleged racist abuse of Raheem Sterling 'disgusting', says Maurizio Sarri

The Professional Footballers' Association said Monday it stood "shoulder to shoulder" with Raheem Sterling after the Manchester City player suffered alleged racial abuse during his side's defeat against Chelsea.

Chelsea and the police are investigating the incident at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, which was highlighted on social media.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, Sterling accused British newspapers of helping to "fuel racism" with the way they portray young black footballers.

Simone Pound, PFA head of equality and diversity, said: "Football is a microcosm of society and incidents such as this highlight the current political climate.

"Raheem has made a stand by speaking out and we stand shoulder to shoulder with him against the discrimination of which he speaks."

A statement from the organisation on Monday added: "The PFA condemn, in the strongest terms, the increase in racial abuse our members have been receiving from the terraces.

"We encourage all clubs to take the strongest possible action for fans found guilty of racially abusing players.

"We commend Raheem for his professionalism during the incident and the statement he made via Instagram on Sunday," it added.

"We stand with him in calling for the press to consider the coverage of all footballers carefully, and to end their imbalanced coverage aimed at young, black players."

In his Instagram post Sterling, 24, referred to a story from January about City teammate Tosin Adarabioyo reportedly buying an expensive house despite never having started a Premier League match.

"The young black kid is looked at in a bad light. Which helps fuel racism an(d) aggressive behaviour," Sterling wrote.

"So for all the newspapers that don't understand why people are racist in this day and age all I have to say is have a second thought about fair publicity an(d) give all players an equal chance."

The PFA was also critical of the media's portrayal of Sterling, who has previously faced negative publicity, often for non-football issues.

"We have been aware for a few months of the targeting Raheem faces in the press -- it is evident that he is often singled out and treated more harshly than his colleagues," its statement said.

"As such, these stories are fuelling racism within the game, as reports of racist abuse continue to rise."

Former England and Liverpool player John Barnes was the victim of persistent racism during his playing days, including monkey chants and having bananas thrown at him.

The 55-year-old feels prejudice and discrimination extend far beyond football and stems from "hundreds of years of indoctrination".

"When people talk about, 'Oh isn't that terrible what happened to Raheem Sterling?', you speak to black people in the inner cities and they say 'this is what we go through every single day'," Barnes told the BBC.

"It's not a surprise to us. It's prevalent in society as you go into the inner cities and see how disenfranchised and what a lack of opportunities there are for members of ethnic minorities."

Be champions not 'invincible': Pep Guardiola urges City after Chelsea defeat

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he was "delighted" with his side's performance despite a first Premier League defeat of the season in a 2-0 loss at Chelsea on Saturday.

City dominated possession early on at Stamford Bridge, but could not find a way through a well-organised Chelsea defence and were hit on the break just before halftime as N'Golo Kante netted Chelsea's first shot at goal.

David Luiz's header in the second half sealed City's first Premier League defeat since April as they were knocked off the summit by unbeaten Liverpool.

Guardiola, however, still liked what he saw, believing Chelsea simply took their chances at key moments.

"The way we played in the first half was incredible," Guardiola said. "They had minimum chances and scored and in the second half we were there until the end.

"If they have one chance they will score one goal because the opponents are so good and determined.

"That is what's going to happen in the future on the biggest stages but the way we played today was incredible. I`m delighted. We were outstanding except for five to eight minutes.

"We try to be champion. Everyone wants to beat us. Now it is recovery for the Champions League."

Chelsea, second only to City in terms of average possession per match in the Premier League this season, were happy to absorb City`s pressure in the first half.

Despite having over 62 per cent possession, City mustered just one shot on target before the interval and were forced to chase the game in the second after Kante`s goal.

They looked unusually ineffective though and never really looked likely to salvage anything after Luiz`s late header.

After defeats by Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers in their last three matches after going unbeaten in their opening 12 league games, it was a return to form for Chelsea after the first serious questions had been asked of new manager Maurizio Sarri.

"We know very well that the ball possession is usual for us, today was a problem and so we knew very well that maybe there were more spaces for counters.

"We defended very well and then we started to press better and after the first goal the match changed and we played well in the first 20 of the second half, and in the end we deserved to win and I am happy with it. "It's not easy to win against Man City."

He said the change of emphasis from a possession-based game to a counter-attacking style had been key against City.

"That is what's going to happen in the future on the biggest stages but the way we played today was incredible. I`m delighted. We were outstanding except for five to eight minutes. "We try to be champion. Everyone wants to beat us. Now it is recovery for the Champions League." Chelsea, second only to City in terms of average possession per match in the Premier League this season, were happy to absorb City`s pressure in the first half. "It's not easy to win against Man City." He said the change of emphasis from a possession-based game to a counter-attacking style had been key against City.

A Chelsea spokesman said: "We're aware of reports and video footage. We will investigate the matter and take the strongest possible action where necessary."

The Metropolitan Police said no arrests had been made but they were also looking at the incident.

Chelsea launch investigation into racist abuse aimed at Raheem Sterling

Manchester City have fallen out of first place in the Premier League after suffering a 2-0 loss here Saturday to Chelsea in Matchday 16 action.

The Citizens controlled possession early on at Stamford Bridge and created a handful of chances, but Chelsea goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga corralled a shot by Raheem Sterling in the ninth minute and blocked an attempt by Leroy Sane shortly after the half-hour mark.

Chelsea then stunned the visitors with a goal shortly before halftime by N'Golo Kante, who fired a shot into the roof of the goal off a pass from Belgian star Eden Hazard.

City continued to control possession in the second half but could not break down Chelsea's well-organized defense, a situation that only worsened when David Silva limped off the field with an injury.

The visitors ceded the reins of the contest after the Spanish midfielder's exit and ended up allowing the second goal at the 78-minute mark on a header off a corner kick by David Luiz.

Manchester City fall from top spot with 2-0 loss to Chelsea

Lucas Torreira scored with a bicycle kick in the 82nd minute to earn Arsenal a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town in a scrappy Premier League game on Saturday.

The Uruguayan leapt to volley the ball from a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pass across the face of goal, securing all three points for the Gunners who otherwise only distinguished themselves by having three players booked for diving.

The first half was a comedy of errors for Arsenal, with strikers Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette missing clear scoring opportunities and midfield lynchpin Granit Xhaka frequently passing the ball straight to the opposition.

Referee Paul Tierney dished out seven yellow cards in the half, and nine in the whole match. Arsenal's Xhaka, Shkodran Mustafi and Matteo Guendouzi were all booked for simulation.

Lacazette appeared to break the stalemate just before halftime, latching on to a sloppy backpass and sidestepping keeper Jonas Lossl to slot the ball into the net, only to be ruled offside. Lossl then tipped a Torreira shot from outside the area just over the bar.

Huddersfield, who have not beaten Arsenal since 1971, were unable to register a shot on goal.

In the end, it fell to a moment of acrobatics from the little Uruguayan to rob the visitors of a much-needed point.

Arsenal climbed to third in the table ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur's matches later on Saturday, while Huddersfield slipped back into the relegation zone, in 18th place.

Arsenal beat Huddersfield after Lucas Torreira's stunning goal

Manchester United earned their first Premier League win in five games with a comfortable 4-1 victory over bottom side Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday.

With record signing Paul Pogba on the bench once more, United wasted no time in finding their rhythm, as Ashley Young scored his first goal in all competitons for United since 2017 to break the deadlock in the 13th minute.

Juan Mata stroked home a second to score his 50th Premier League goal in the 28th minute, before Romelu Lukaku scored his first home goal since March to make it 3-0 before halftime.

Coming into the encounter with a negative goal difference, United were in need of a confidence-building performance and a contest against the Premier League's most porous defence was just what the doctor ordered.

Fulham remained under the cosh after the break but managed a consolation through Aboubakar Kamara's penalty.

But Andre-Frank Anguissa was sent off for Fulham before Marcus Rashford scored a fourth late on to complete a miserable afternoon for Claudio Ranieri's strugglers.

A first three points in the league since early November ensured United climbed to sixth, seven points off the top four, with Chelsea in fifth not in action until later on Saturday.

Fulham remain bottom, three points from the safety zone.

"The players have shown they can be a better team than they are," manager Jose Mourinho said. "At times it was beautiful football. The first half was perfect. We were really good. We needed it."

Lukaku's inclusion was one of four changes to the side that drew against Arsenal in midweek, meaning Mourinho has made 50 changes to his starting line-up already this season.

One of those other changes, Young, got the ball rolling, nutmegging his marker to slot home, before an equally fine finish from Mata saw him reach his goalscoring half century.

Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico was then called into a action once more, keeping out a fierce Rashford strike, before Mata cut the ball back for Lukuku to score his first Old Trafford goal in 997 minutes in all competitions.

"The first half was only Manchester United with powerful qualities," Ranieri said. "Second half was much better. We had the desire to do our best."

After the break, Ander Herrera missed a glorious chance to make it four, before the Spaniard felled Kamara in the box to concede a penalty, which Kamara converted with ease.

Anguissa's red card after earning his second yellow made things yet more difficult for Fulham, before Rashford completed the rout eight minutes from time, squeezing his effort in at the near post.

Manchester United crush Fulham for first league win in five games

Burnley earned a badly-needed three points to move out of the Premier League relegation zone with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

On a rainy, windy afternoon at Turf Moor, nothing was going to wipe away the smiles of manager Sean Dyche and the Burnley fans as James Tarkowski's goal late in the first half proved decisive.

"I think it is a bit of relief, and enjoyment," Dyche, whose side had lost their last three fixtures at Turf Moor while conceding nine goals, told the BBC.

"It was a hard-earned and hard-fought win. We never thought it would come from being free-flowing. We thought we would have to dig in and we have done that today."

Though the goal was credited to Tarkowski, it was Jack Cork who was responsible for the 40th-minute breakthrough when his shot deflected off the England defender's midriff into the net.

It was a scruffy goal but Dyche was not complaining.

"A goal is a goal. When you find wins and clean sheets hard to come by, 1-0 is a very pleasing result," he said.

"Performances have been suggesting we were getting back to that hardy edge we know we have got. We created chances but it wasn't about that. It was about fight and spirit. We know we can get better but sometimes you've got to grind."

The goal was only what Burnley deserved, though, after they took control in the second part of the opening period with Chris Wood and Robbie Brady, who had also volleyed narrowly over, forcing fine saves from Mat Ryan.

Burnley also felt they should have earned a second-half penalty when Yves Bissouma's extravagant bicycle kick in his own box caught Phil Bardsley.

Yet on a special day for Burnley's Joe Hart, who was making his 400th league appearance in English football, the former England goalkeeper proved his quality as the home side held on under increasingly severe pressure.

Brighton's manager Chris Hughton, whose side lie 11th in the table, felt the Seagulls deserved more.

"I thought we were the better side. I thought we had the better chances in the game," he said.

Burnley out of relegation zone with win over Brighton

West Ham United continued their fine recent form with a 3-2 come-from-behind derby win at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

Palace came into the contest having won once in their last 10 league games but got off to a perfect start with James McArthur breaking the deadlock with six minutes on the clock.

However, the introduction of striker Andy Carroll at halftime revitalised West Ham, who turned the match on its head with goals from Robert Snodgrass -- his first in the league for the club -- and Javier Hernandez.

Close-season signing Felipe Anderson fired a stunning third in the 65th minute -- his fifth goal in his last six league games -- to calm the nerves around the London Stadium.

But the hosts had to hang on for their third successive win -- the first time they have done so since December 2016 -- with Jeffrey Schlupp getting Palace back in it with 14 minutes left.

West Ham climbed to 10th while Palace's woeful run of form leaves them 16th, two points above the relegation zone.

"It is the third game in a row where we score three goals and that reflects what we are trying to do," West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini said.

"I always say to the players we must have a winning mentality."

Good Fortune

Injured Austria striker Marko Arnautovic was missing for West Ham, but it was defence that was their undoing early on, with McArthur stealing in unmarked from a set piece to break the deadlock.

The hosts really struggled to create any openings of note in response, and were fortunate not to fall further behind when Luka Milivojevic thundered an effort against the bar on the stroke of halftime.

That good fortune proved to be a turning point, as West Ham came out for the second period with added impetus, and levelled through a fine Snodgrass goal, before Hernandez pounced to put his side in front in the 62nd minute.

In-form Anderson then found the net three minutes later to put the hosts in control, before Schlupp ensured a nervy finish.

"After they equalised we started to play better and had good control but after the free kick and strike from Anderson we find ourselves 3-1 down," Palace manager Roy Hodgson said.

"We continued to ask questions but the two goals after the equaliser did for us."

Chelsea bounced back from the disappointment of losing at Wolves in midweek as they defeated Manchester City 2-0 in Premier League's Matchday 16 action on Saturday.

City dominated the first half but failed to profit with Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane missed big chances.

Despite the victory, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri complained about his side's level of motivation.

While interacting with media, Sarri said, "I think that we have a team with some difficulties to be motivated and in this kind of match, it is easy to have great motivation, a very good level of determination, the right level of aggressivity."

"But then during the season, you will also have to play against the small teams."

Sarri had lost all of his previous three meetings against Guardiola and was growing increasingly frustrated at his side's inability to hold possession as the visitors dominated the first half.

Chelsea players have 'some difficulties to be motivated': Maurizio Sarri

Liverpool maintained their best start to a season as Mo Salah, back at his dazzling best, scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Bournemouth that took them, temporarily at least, to the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Salah set them on their way in the 25th minute, latching on to the rebound after Roberto Firmino's 30-metre shot was palmed into his path by Asmir Begovic, even though television replays showed the Egyptian to be marginally offside when he pounced.

There was no argument about his second strike straight after the interval when Firmino again freed him to maraud on goal and fire into the corner, with the help of the slightest nick off Nathan Ake's heel.

After the unfortunate Steve Cook diverted Andy Robertson's cross past Begovic for an own goal, Salah worked his real magic, outmuscling Cook to get to Adam Lallana's through ball before dancing nimbly around Begovic and slotting home late on.

Salah's treble at the Vitality Stadium put him on 10 league goals this season, matching Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the top of the scoring charts that he dominated last season.

Against tough, seventh-placed opponents, Juergen Klopp's side went a 17th straight league match unbeaten, equalling their club record set 10 years ago, and emulated the 4-0 thrashing of the Cherries in the corresponding fixture last season.

It put them a point clear of Manchester City at the summit on 42 points, though Pep Guardiola's men have the chance to regain top spot later when they visit Chelsea.

Amazing Career

It was a splendid afternoon for Liverpool's James Milner to celebrate becoming only the 13th player to make 500 top-flight appearances in the Premier League era.

Salah even gave his own man-of-the match award to his 32-year-old team mate to mark his achievement.

"He's had an amazing career. I have to congratulate him on an amazing career -- he deserves this today," Salah told Milner on Sky Sports. "I will not take it."

As he clutched the match ball after his second Liverpool hat-trick, the Egyptian added: "It wasn't a bad way at all (to get back among the goals)...I enjoyed the last one the most. I was calm."

Now getting back into his most imperious stride after a slow start to the campaign, Salah added: "My expectations are very high.

"I know everyone else's expectations of me are also very high but the most important thing is for us to win each game and be top of the table."

For Milner, it was a special afternoon after 16 years of excellence in the Premier League. "It's the perfect way to celebrate it (the 500th appearance)," he said.

"It wasn't our best performance of the season by any means but we were efficient, got the job done and this fella (Salah) is unbelievable... He can win you a game on his own."

Amazing Career It was a splendid afternoon for Liverpool's James Milner to celebrate becoming only the 13th player to make 500 top-flight appearances in the Premier League era. Salah even gave his own man-of-the match award to his 32-year-old team mate to mark his achievement. "He's had an amazing career. I have to congratulate him on an amazing career -- he deserves this today," Salah told Milner on Sky Sports. "I will not take it." As he clutched the match ball after his second Liverpool hat-trick, the Egyptian added: "It wasn't a bad way at all (to get back among the goals)...I enjoyed the last one the most. I was calm." Now getting back into his most imperious stride after a slow start to the campaign, Salah added: "My expectations are very high. "I know everyone else's expectations of me are also very high but the most important thing is for us to win each game and be top of the table." For Milner, it was a special afternoon after 16 years of excellence in the Premier League. "It's the perfect way to celebrate it (the 500th appearance)," he said. "It wasn't our best performance of the season by any means but we were efficient, got the job done and this fella (Salah) is unbelievable... He can win you a game on his own."

Mesut Ozil has missed Arsenal's last four matches and it is expected that he might be absent when the Gunners host Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Arsenal coach Unai Emery gave an update on the fitness of attacking midfielders Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey.

While speaking to media, Emery said, "He had backache and now he is working with one physio. We are going to look when he can come with us."

Ozil is being treated for a back problem and manager Unai Emery has hinted that he could be passed fit on Friday if he comes through sessions with the club's physiotherapist unscathed.

He said, "Tomorrow is the training, the last training before (Saturday's match), today, this morning, he was working with a physio, but on the pitch, running and touching the ball. And tomorrow is the decision."

Ozil's absence mattered little as the Gunners' unbeaten run simply carried on without him.

Emery called on the club's supporters to get behind the team, to help finish off a series of three games in seven days with seven points following the 4-2 victory in the North London derby last Sunday and the 2-2 draw at Manchester United on Wednesday.

Naby Keita has started to show he can add creativity to Liverpool's midfield but Jurgen Klopp may question his squad's strength in depth despite securing two Premier League wins in four days.

Klopp is likely to revert to his tried-and-trusted first choices at Bournemouth on Saturday, having been a little lucky on Wednesday to emerge with a 3-1 win at Burnley after making seven changes to his line-up.

There were good reasons for so many changes - the match came hot on the heels of Sunday's dramatic late derby victory over Everton, at the start of a frantic month that features home games against Napoli, Manchester United and Arsenal.

In addition, full-back Andy Robertson and forward Sadio Mane were injured, and so Klopp would have had to shuffle his players around even if rotation had not been on his mind.

Yet Liverpool were second-best for the opening hour at Turf Moor against opponents without a victory since September 30, and only turned the match around in the final 30 minutes, when Klopp brought on Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

It was evidence of just how important Salah, Firmino and Sane are to the Liverpool cause, even if they have not necessarily been at their best this season.
During Liverpool's struggles on Wednesday, though, the performance of Keita did give Klopp reason to be positive.

The Guinea midfielder's impact has been restricted by injury problems since his arrival from RB Leipzig in July but he is starting to look at home in the English game.

His creativity is likely to be crucial, given that Liverpool have been short of such a player following the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January and because of the long-term knee injury suffered by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in April.

Keita makes his case

Of the seven players brought into the starting line-up by Klopp at Burnley, Keita made the strongest case to retain his place at Bournemouth, where there will have to be at least one change, with defender Joe Gomez sidelined for up to six weeks after fracturing his leg.

At Turf Moor, Keita showed he was willing to fight for the ball but also provided forward impetus once he got it, almost scoring with a shot that Joe Hart saved brilliantly.

"He started the season brilliantly and obviously then getting an injury set him back a little bit. But you can see how good a player he is," said captain Jordan Henderson.

"That shot with the left foot and the save from Hart was fantastic. In his overall play he is comfortable on the ball and he helps build up play from the back. He drives the ball forward, which is big for us. I thought he was outstanding."

As a whole, though, Liverpool lack the strength in depth of Manchester City, the team they will have to surpass in order to become champions of England for the first time since 1990.

City had a rather more comfortable night at Watford on Tuesday, despite only winning 2-1, as Pep Guardiola rotated his squad.

It raises the question as to whether Liverpool can afford to go full out for both the Champions League and Premier League. Fail to get the right result against Napoli in their final European group-stage game next Tuesday, and the decision will be made for them.

Henderson, though, is remaining positive.

"The games are coming thick and fast, a lot of games in a short space of time but we showed we can use the squad and still perform to the level we know we are capable of and win games - and that's a big plus for us," he said.

Brighton and Hove Albion's top-scorer Glenn Murray is a doubt for Saturday's Premier League trip to Burnley due to a shoulder injury, manager Chris Hughton said on Thursday.

Murray scored his eighth goal of the season with a penalty in Brighton's 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Tuesday but the 35-year-old sustained the injury in a fall and was substituted in the first half.

"We'll assess Glenn in the morning -- today it wasn't as bad as we thought -- we'll give him every opportunity to be fit," Hughton told a news conference.

"He went over on his shoulder but it's not dislocated. It's a bit sore but better than what it could have been."

Murray's replacement Florin Andone also scored in the win over Palace and the Romanian forward is expected to lead the line again on Saturday.

Winger Jose Izquierdo could also miss the game at Turf Moor with a knee problem while defender Shane Duffy is suspended after picking up a red card in the last game.

Brighton are 10th in the table with 21 points while Burnley are second from bottom on nine points.

Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri said that he is "very worried" after losing 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday as the Blues lost more ground in the Premier League title race.

During the post-match interview, Sarri said, "I don't know why but I am very worried, not for the result, but for the fact that we didn't react of the first goal of the opponent. We didn't react at all."

Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota scored goals in a four-minute span around the hour mark to condemn Chelsea to a second loss in three games, after a recent 3-1 defeat at Tottenham.

Southampton have appointed Austrian Ralph Hasenhuttl as manager on a 2-1/2-year contract after firing Welshman Mark Hughes, the struggling Premier League club said in a statement on Wednesday.

The 51-year-old former RB Leipzig coach will take charge on Thursday, the day after Saints play Tottenham Hotspur in the league at Wembley.

Southampton sacked Hughes after a 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United last weekend left the south-coast club in the relegation zone with one win from 14 league matches.

Hasenhuttl guided newly-promoted Leipzig to second place in the Bundesliga in the 2016-17 season before leaving last May after a dispute over a new contract.

Former Austria forward will be Saints' fourth manager in two years with Claude Puel and Mauricio Pellegrino also being sacked since Ronald Koeman left for Everton in 2016.

"This manager change offers us a fresh start and, very quickly, Ralph emerged as our ideal candidate," Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger said in a statement.

"As a coach, he embodies the passion, structure, communication skill set, work ethic and appetite for growth that we strive for in our Southampton Way."

Saints Radar

Krueger said Hasenhuttl had been on Southampton's radar since he was at FC Ingolstadt and took the German side up to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2015.

"As soon as we met, Ralph’s enthusiasm for football was contagious and his hunger to take on a new and challenging job in the Premier League was evident," added Krueger.

"In our discussions, he very quickly aligned himself with the values and the vision of the club."

Southampton said he would be supported by existing first team assistant coach Kelvin Davis, head of goalkeeping Dave Watson and head of sports science Alek Gross.

The change of manager has been welcomed by many Southampton supporters who were frustrated at Hughes' inability to get the most from a talented squad.

The Welshman helped Saints narrowly avoid the drop last season by finishing 17th in the table, but this term they sit 18th in the standings after seven defeats.

Their only league win this season came against Crystal Palace in September and success-starved fans have seen Southampton win only one league match at home in the past 12 months -- a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth in April.

Forgotten man Divock Origi snatched a dramatic last-gasp 1-0 win for Liverpool over Merseyside rivals Everton in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday.

Everton looked to have done enough to secure a point but a horrendous error from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford gifted the ball to Origi, who headed it home in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Chasing a first win at Anfield since 1999, Everton created the better of the openings in the first half, but found Liverpool goalkeeper Allison in inspired form.

Liverpool upped the tempo after the break and twice went close through Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Origi, who came off the bench for his first league appearance of the season, saw an earlier close-range effort come out off the post, before he grabbed the headlines with the bizarre winner.

The goal sparked wild celebrations at Anfield with manager Juergen Klopp running on to the pitch. The win allowed second-placed Liverpool to close the gap on league leaders Manchester City to two points.

Forgotten man Divock Origi snatches dramatic derby win for Liverpool

Manchester City maintained their unbeaten run with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table as Manchester United fought back to salvage a 2-2 draw at Southampton on Saturday.

City top the standings by five points from Liverpool who face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday after Tottenham Hotspur, who are third, face north London rivals Arsenal.

Crystal Palace beat Burnley 2-0 to end a run of eight matches without a win and there were victories for Leicester City, West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion.

City were without Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez at the Etihad but normal service resumed as they took the lead against Bournemouth after 16 minutes through Bernardo Silva.

The visitors went into halftime level, however, thanks to a header from in-form England striker Callum Wilson.

Bournemouth's hopes of a stunning upset were dashed as the champions struck again with goals by Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Guendogan.

"Bournemouth are a good side, so strong up front, so we could not press," City manager Pep Guardiola said. "They played long balls, attacked the channels. They were taller than us and stronger than us.

"In the last 20 minutes we were flat and that is why I am delighted to win in that way."

Guardiola's side are 16 points ahead of neighbours United whose poor season continued with a draw against struggling Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.

Southampton's Stuart Armstrong fired an unstoppable shot past David de Gea after 13 minutes and the Spanish goalkeeper was beaten again by a curling Cedric Soares free kick into the top corner.

Southampton let a two-goal lead slip against Fulham last week and United quickly hit back through Romelu Lukaku who was set up by Marcus Rashford.

The goal was the Belgian striker's first for his club since the middle of September, a drought lasting 981 minutes.

Ander Herrera equalised before halftime to bring United fully back into the contest but the match petered out into a draw, a result that will not please either manager much.

"We did so well in the last 10, 15 minutes of the first half... good spirit, good fight, good comeback from 0-2 to 2-2 and great examples of players fighting to the limits," Mourinho told BT Sport.

"Positive examples include Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones and many others showing that respect for the shirt and showing respect for the club. Not the result we wanted but a performance that had positive things."

Huddersfield Town looked set to continue their recent upturn in form by scoring after 58 seconds at home to Brighton, Mathias Jorgensen heading in the fastest goal of the Premier League season.

However, the hosts were reduced to 10 men after half an hour when Steve Mounie was sent off for a high challenge and Brighton took full advantage with goals by Shane Duffy and Florin Andone.

PALACE JOY

Palace leapt above Huddersfield in the standings by beating Burnley at Selhurst Park to lift the pressure on manager Roy Hodgson.

Strikes in each half from James McArthur and Andros Townsend were Palace's first goals from open play at home all season. Burnley remained in the relegation zone having slipped down to 18th after Cardiff City's 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.

Leicester recorded their first home win in the league since September with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Watford.

Jamie Vardy opened the scoring with a penalty after 12 minutes before James Maddison netted a brilliant volley to move Leicester up to eighth.

West Ham striker Javier Hernandez scored twice and Felipe Anderson grabbed another as the London side won 3-0 win at Newcastle United, halting the recent momentum of Rafa Benitez's side.

Man City extend lead at top, Man United salvage draw

Arsenal came out on top in the north London derby on Sunday, sinking rivals Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 in a scintillating match at the Emirates and leapfrogging them to go fourth in the Premier League table.

A brace from Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and strikes from Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira helped overhaul goals from Eric Dier and Harry Kane, who notched his eighth in eight derbies.

Aubameyang gave the home side the lead from the penalty spot in the 10th minute after a clumsy handball by Spurs` Jan Vertonghen, who flung his arm up to knock a corner kick off course and prevent Shkodran Mustafi from heading the ball goalward.

Arsenal come from behind to beat rivals Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has played down his side's Premier League title chances ahead of the north London derby at fierce rivals Arsenal on Sunday, despite his side rising to third in the standings.

Pochettino's side impressed last weekend, inflicting a first defeat of the season on Chelsea with a 3-1 win at Wembley, which took them above Maurizio Sarri's team in the league table, five points off leaders Manchester City.

Spurs were last English champions in 1961 but have not finished lower than third in the Premier League in the last three seasons.

Pochettino said, however, that Spurs were not at the same level as their top-four rivals especially as the north London side made no signings in the close season compared to the heavy investment made by others.

"I can't say we're a title contender. I think Manchester City is in a different level. Clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea, (Manchester) United and Arsenal make a bigger investment to us, a different level," the Argentine told a news conference on Friday.

"They are the contenders, more than us. But we’re there. If we’re capable in the last few months of the season to be in a good position in the table we’re going to try."

Sunday's game at the Emirates will see Pochettino once again lock horns with Arsenal's coach Unai Emery. The two faced each other seven times from 2009 to 2012 when the Argentine was coaching Espanyol and Emery was in charge of Valencia.

Since succeeding Arsene Wenger, Emery has led Arsenal to fifth in the table with eight wins out of 13 league matches.

"I have a very good relationship with Unai, he is a great manager, he's doing a fantastic job there," said Pochettino.

"Of course Arsenal have always been a good team with very good players and unbelievable management from one of the greatest managers ever.

"Now it is a completely different culture with a manager who is Spanish. It will be tough because they are doing a good job from the beginning of the season and signed very good players too."

Spurs may be without Erik Lamela as he is being assessed after injuring his ankle in the 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Right back Kieran Trippier is close to return from a groin injury while midfielders Victor Wanyama (knee), Mousa Dembele (ankle) and defender Davinson Sanchez (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.

Spurs also announced on Friday a familiarisation event at their new stadium on Dec. 16 for around 6,000 season ticket holders as the completion of their long awaited venue appears to be getting closer.

Supporters will enter a ballot to be given access to the single tier south stand and surrounding areas.

"It makes me feel very, very happy. It makes me feel we are close to compete there. It’s an important thing for the fans to show our new home," Pochettino said.

The new 62,000 stadium on the site of the old White Hart Lane was due to be opened in August but has been delayed until next year.

Spurs are not title contenders, says Pochettino ahead of derby

Manchester United's Marouane Fellaini struck a controversial stoppage-time winner to bring blessed relief to Old Trafford after a laboured 1-0 win over Young Boys edged them into the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

United's struggles at home and their fans' disenchantment had looked set to continue as it seemed that, for the first time in their history, they were going to fail to score at their own ground in a European tie for three matches in a row.

Yet, after largely dominating the match while being betrayed by a blunt edge up front, Belgian Fellaini turned to shoot home in the 91st minute, despite the ball appearing to come off his hand as he swivelled to strike it.

"For me it was not a handball," he told BT Sport. "If it touched my hand, it was not on purpose."

United, though, were also grateful for the right hand of goalkeeper David de Gea, who made a truly remarkable second-half save at full stretch from a deflected Ulisses Garcia strike, clawing the ball off the line at full stretch.

It was so brilliant that it even prompted United manager Jose Mourinho to hail the Spaniard as "the best goalkeeper in the world."

The save came as the Swiss champions grew in confidence in the second half, encouraged by the prosaic efforts of United, who struggled to create chances and squandered the few they did fashion.

Marcus Rashford, one of their livelier players, was also their most wasteful, missing five opportunities, including an outstanding one in the opening five minutes.

The relief around Old Trafford when Fellaini turned to fire his effort through the legs of defender Loris Benito was so pronounced that an emotional Mourinho even picked up and hurled the pitchside drinks holder furiously to the ground.

The late win after another sub-par performance at least ensured United qualified from Group H as they moved on to 10 points, two behind leaders Juventus who beat Valencia 1-0 to eliminate the Spaniards who have five. Young Boys are on one.

"The most important thing is to qualify and for some of my lovers, and those that like stats, I am 14 seasons in the Champions League and 14 times my teams have qualified through to the group stages," Mourinho told BT Sport.

"The season I was not in the Champions League, I won the Europa League."

On a wet night at Old Trafford enlivened by the sight of 3,000 visiting fans all in yellow rain macs cheering on the underdogs, United began brightly, even with Mourinho having left Paul Pogba on the bench and omitted Alexis Sanchez.

The Frenchman scored twice in the corresponding fixture in Berne when United won 3-0 and it looked from the start, as Rashford chipped over when one-on-one with keeper David von Ballmoos, as if it could be a comfortable night for the hosts.

Rashford forced another sharp save from Von Ballmoos on the quarter-hour and fired one wide 10 minutes later with his exciting approach play betrayed by poor finishing as United began to perform in now-familiar stodgy fashion.

Young Boys created barely an opportunity but could have sneaked the lead just before halftime had it not been for Djibril Sow's attempt at an over-elaborate back-heel finish.

Rashford's profligacy continued after the break when he sliced wide with his left foot before Fellaini hoiked another volleyed opportunity skywards.

It all encouraged the visitors to come out of their shells and Garcia forced the incredible stop from De Gea as the Swiss side looked increasingly dangerous.

"We're thankful for David pulling off an unbelievable save but we dug in there, kept going and, okay, it wasn't pretty but we won the game." said United defender Phil Jones.

"It takes the pressure off going to Spain but we need to finish the group strongly."

Manchester United qualify after controversial late Fellaini winner

Tottenham Hotspur ended Chelsea's unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a breathtaking display of attacking football at Wembley that saw them seal an emphatic 3-1 win and refresh their title challenge on Saturday.

The win moved Spurs up to third but unbeaten Manchester City still looked in a class of their own at the top as Leroy Sane scored twice in a 4-0 stroll over West Ham United at the London Stadium.

It put City onto 35 points from 13 matches but nearest pursuers Liverpool, also still unbeaten, remained just two points behind the champions, keeping up the pressure with a 3-0 win at Watford.

Much had been made of the unbeaten runs of City, Liverpool and Chelsea but Spurs had, quietly, made an impressive start to their own campaign and were at their brilliant best at a raucous Wembley.

After City and Liverpool had won, the writing was quickly on the wall for Maurizio Sarri's men in the day's late fixture as Chelsea went 2-0 down inside 16 minutes to goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Spurs added a sensational third when Son Heung-min carried the ball from inside his own half, beat two men with ease before finishing neatly.

Substitute Olivier Giroud added a late consolation for Chelsea but Spurs' win moved them on to 30 points, now two points clear of their London rivals.

"We created a lot of chances. If we had been more clinical we could have scored more, it was a great performance by everyone," Alli told BT Sport.

Sane's double along with goals from David Silva and Raheem Sterling helped Man City record their eighth consecutive victory.

Worryingly for the rest of the league, City manager Pep Guardiola felt his side could have played much better.

Spurs end Chelsea run as Man City, Liverpool forge on

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was disappointed with his side's performance after a goalless draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday in the Premier League clash. He accused his players of not playing "from the heart" at Old Trafford.

"It was not enough from the heart. You must play with brain. You must play also with heart. I think not enough heart," said Mourinho during the post-match press conference.

He further said, "We should also blame ourselves for the results because we started really well. We did the most difficult thing, apart of score, which is to find the spaces to play against the team that is very closed."

"We played the game like one more game (like just another game). I don't think the game is one more game, I think it is a game that we really need to win."

The result left United in seventh place on 21 points from 13 games, 14 adrift of leaders Manchester City and six behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

"You must play also with heart"

Adding to that, he said, "Probably I have to make certain choices based on heart, and then probably I will blame myself because I will think heart is not enough and I'm missing here some quality."

He credited Palace for their performance which allowed them to snap their six-match losing streak against the Red Devils.

"I think they, Crystal Palace, they deserve the credit. They deserve, because they come for this. And they got it, and they fought for it, and they gave everything for it. So I think they deserve their credit," he concluded.

Manchester United didn't play 'from the heart' against Crystal Palace: Jose Mourinho

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has signed a new long-term contract with the Premier League giants, the club announced on Thursday.

The 26-year-old joined Jurgen Klopp's side from Southampton in June 2016, and has scored 40 goals for Liverpool, forming a deadly frontline alongside Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

"I am very happy, very happy to extend my time at Liverpool," Mane said. "It is a great day for me and now I am looking forward to everything –- to helping the team, to helping the club achieve our dreams and, especially, to win trophies.

"For me, I have made the best decision in my career."

The length of his new deal was not disclosed by Liverpool.

"This is a big boost for everyone and another demonstration of how the players we have at this club are committed, not just to our present but our future also," said Reds manager Klopp.

"I can't think of a single club anywhere in Europe that wouldn't want a player like Sadio available to them, so the fact he wants to remain with us says something about where we are currently.

"He is a such an important member of our team and squad. He radiates joy and I think this is reflected in his performances and impact on the pitch."

The Anfield club put their unbeaten record in the league this term on the line against Watford on Saturday.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes the competitive nature and sheer unpredictability of the Premier League has presented him with the biggest challenge of his career.

Prior to his move to Manchester, Guardiola collected three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies with Barcelona, before leading Bayern Munich to three consecutive Bundesliga crowns in competitions dominated by very few teams.

However, the Spaniard said it felt like he needed to learn a whole new set of skills after arriving in England in 2016, forced to cope with heavy fixture congestion and a title challenge from five other contenders.

"I am a better manager than I was in Germany, and I am a better manager now than I was in Barcelona by far, just for the fact of being there," he said at the Peers Annual Lecture at Liverpool University.

"Now, I feel being here I am a better manager too, because I learned to handle this incredible league in many circumstances.

"It is the toughest one, for the amount of games, for the weather and the referees saying: 'play (on), play (on), play (on)' and the competitors, there are many. It is the only country that five or six (teams) can win the Premier League."

Guardiola led City to the Premier League title in record-breaking fashion last season, finishing on 100 points and 106 goals in 38 matches.

City also lifted the League Cup and Community Shield this year to take Guardiola's tally to 24 major trophies, with the Spaniard admitting that transferring his skills to the international stage could one day come to fruition.

"Sooner or later, it will happen because every three days I would like to be involved, but a little bit more calm, play more golf," he added.

"If I have a chance and some international team wants to come 'knock knock'. We will see."
