Liverpool are under no additional pressure to claim their first league title in 29 years despite a recent blip that has allowed Premier League champions Manchester City to reclaim top spot, according to goalkeeper Alisson.

Frustrating 1-1 draws in their last two league games against Leicester City and West Ham United have left Liverpool on 62 points from 25 games and a spot behind City on goal difference, although Pep Guardiola's side have played an extra game.

"Our pressure is the same. We take things game by game without worrying about what our opponents are doing," Brazil international Alisson said ahead of Saturday's league clash against 10th-placed Bournemouth.

The 26-year-old said that Liverpool, who were nine points ahead of City at one stage in December, were not short of belief going into the home stretch of the season.

"We've shown in the past that we're good enough and we'll continue to show this in the games we've got to come," he said.

"Everyone wants to win this league but at Liverpool, our concern is winning games and not dropping points. We don't think about City, we think about ourselves. We only think about what we can do and how things are moving forward."

Manchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was named January's Premier League manager of the month on Friday after an unbeaten start to his tenure at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer, who replaced Jose Mourinho in December, becomes the first United manager to receive the award since long-time boss Alex Ferguson in Oct. 2012, during the season when the club last won the league title.

United claimed 10 points from a possible 12 in January, with victories over Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton and Hove Albion, as well as a comeback draw at home against Burnley.

"We want to move up the table and this is the start of it," said Solskjaer, who has closed the gap between United and the top four teams in the division to two points.

"You cannot be a good leader or a manager without good players... so ultimately it's how they respond to what we tell them and they've been fantastic, so all credit to them."

Argentine striker Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane crash last month, would have thrived in the Premier League with Cardiff City, the club's manager Neil Warnock said on Friday.

Sala joined Cardiff in January and was flying to the Welsh city from his former French club Nantes when his plane disappeared over the sea on January 21.

Authorities abandoned the search for the plane three days later but a privately-funded underwater search found the wreckage on Sunday and a body retrieved was formally identified on Thursday as Sala's.

"I always thought he was a type of player that would score 10 or 15 for me at the top level every year. But not just that, he would work hard as a team player," Warnock told reporters ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Southampton.

"He was at the prime, I felt, and he knew he had things to prove. He'd been in a comfort zone in France, he'd improved every year.

"I think he was ready, if a little bit fearful of the challenge ahead."

Warnock said Cardiff had asked the Premier League to wear shirts with a yellow daffodil to pay tribute to Sala and David Ibbotson, the pilot of the aircraft.

"When something like this happens it brings all the football family together. It's a loss to everyone in football," Warnock added.

"I know we're the closest, but when you see the response from world-class players and the amount of money they were able to raise (to resume the search for the wreckage) in the space of a few hours, it was amazing."

Clubs in France's Ligue 1 and 2, where Sala played for the majority of his career, will hold a minute's applause before this weekend's matches in his memory.

Liverpool posted a world record-breaking £106 million ($137 million) net profit last year even after spending £190 million on new players, according to financial results announced on Friday.

The club's profit before tax was £125 million -- up from £40 million -- with the club benefiting from increased revenue both on and off the pitch from a run to the Champions League final in Kiev, where they were beaten by Real Madrid.

Turnover increased by £90 million to £455 million in the 12 months to May 31 last year, with media revenue, commercial revenue and matchday revenue all up.

The previous record was set by Leicester (£80 million after tax) in 2016/2017, the season after they won the Premier League, when they reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

Liverpool still trail the two Manchester clubs in revenue terms. United declared their results for the 12 months to the end of last June in September, with revenues of £590 million.

Jurgen Klopp's side are level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League as they chase their first English top-flight title for 29 years.

The financial statement shows £137 million came from player transfers, the largest chunk being Philippe Coutinho's January sale to Barcelona in a deal that could eventually worth up to £142 million, during the accounting period.

The club invested heavily, signing Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andrew Robertson, Dominic Solanke and Virgil Van Dijk, who arrived as the world's most expensive defender at £75 million.

Since the end of the reporting period club owners Fenway Sports Group have spent more money on players, with Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker, briefly the world's most expensive goalkeeper, coming in at a cost of £165 million but those deals will be reflected in the current year's figures.

"Financial results do fluctuate depending on player trading costs and timing of payments but what's clear in these latest results is the further strengthening of our underlying financial footing and profits being reinvested in the squad and infrastructure," said chief financial officer Andy Hughes.

"Since the reporting period, which is now nearly 12 months old, we have continued reinvesting in the playing squad from those areas of growth. We're making solid progress right across the club."

Overall, the club’s social media platforms had a 14 percent growth rate and in May 2018, they had the highest viewing figures on YouTube ever for a Premier League club and third of any sports club globally.

In January, Liverpool climbed two places to seventh in Deloitte's Football Money League. The top-ranked English club on the Deloitte's list were Manchester United, in third. &nbsp;

Liverpool post £106 million world record net profit

Champions Manchester City went top of the Premier League with a disciplined 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday that saw them leapfrog Liverpool on goal difference.

Aymeric Laporte headed the opener just before the interval and substitute Gabriel Jesus sealed the victory deep in stoppage time for City, who returned to the league's summit for the first time since Dec. 8.

Both City and Liverpool have 62 points, but Pep Guardiola's side have played one game more than the Merseysiders, who have drawn their last two encounters and host Bournemouth on Saturday.

With Tottenham Hotspur on 57 points, the title race has turned into a genuine three-way tussle and while City rarely sparkled against Everton, it was a key win in a busy week in which they had already beaten Arsenal and host Chelsea on Sunday.

"Four or five days ago we could have been seven points behind, it is a lesson to never give up," said Guardiola.

"Now we have an incredible test on Sunday against Chelsea. I don't know how far we will get, maybe we will die in the road, but we are trying.

"We have played one more game than Liverpool, it's good to be top but Liverpool (still) has a game at Old Trafford," he added, referring to Liverpool's match at Manchester United on Feb. 24.

The game against Everton was a re-arranged fixture caused by City's advance to the League Cup final and highlighted the difficulties to come for a side still involved in four competitions as there were some signs of weariness in their display.

Everton manager Marco Silva left two of his main creative players, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison, on the bench and opted for three central midfielders -- a tactic that worked well as his side closed down City and limited their control of possession.

Yet after all that good work, it was Everton's sloppiness at set-pieces which cost them yet again.

David Silva curled in a free kick from the left and Laporte was somehow left unattended to head home from close-range.

The goal was the 17th conceded by Everton from a set-piece in all competitions this season -- prompting further questions about Silva's insistence on zonal marking.

After the break ninth-placed Everton, who had been well beaten at home by Wolves on Saturday, stuck at their task well, but for all their graft they rarely threatened City's lead.

The home side did get a sniff of an opening when Kyle Walker, deep in his own half, gave the ball away to substitute Richarlison, but the Brazilian's pass towards Cenk Tosun was over-hit and the danger passed.

It was a sign of City's strength in depth that their substitutes combined for the second goal deep in stoppage time with Kevin De Bruyne playing Jesus in on goal.

Although the Brazilian's shot was blocked by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, he reacted quickly to head home the loose ball.

"Everyone (helped) win the game," said Jesus.

"We know that it is going to be difficult. We want to play well in every game and at the end of the season we want the title," he said.

British investigators on Wednesday said they had recovered a body from the wreckage of the plane carrying <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/its-a-bad-dream-emiliano-salas-father-says-after-plane-recovered-194924">Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala</a> in the Channel.

But bad weather has forced the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) to abandon hopes of pulling the plane to shore.&nbsp;

The light aircraft was carrying the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/we-love-you-emi-nantes-players-pay-emotional-tribute-to-emiliano-sala-194536">28-year-old footballer </a>to his new Premier League team Cardiff City when it disappeared near the island of Guernsey on January 21, along with 59-year-old pilot David Ibbotson.

A shipwreck hunter hired by Sala's family with the help of funds donated by football stars such as Lionel Messi had found the plane wreckage on Sunday.

The AAIB who then took over the operation revealed on Monday that an unidentified body had been found at the site.

"In challenging conditions, the AAIB and its specialist contractors successfully recovered the body previously seen amidst the wreckage," the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said Wednesday.

"The operation was carried out in as dignified a way as possible and the families were kept informed of progress."

However, attempts to recover the aircraft during the underwater operation were unsuccessful.&nbsp;

"The weather forecast is poor for the foreseeable future and so the difficult decision was taken to bring the overall operation to a close," the statement added.

It said that extensive video footage captured by a remotely operated vehicle is expected to "provide valuable evidence for our safety investigation," adding that it intends to publish an interim report on the accident later this month.&nbsp;

The recovered body will be now be passed to the coroner for identification.&nbsp;

Sala was flying to join up with Cardiff from French team Nantes in what was the most expensive signing in the Welsh club's history.

The plane, a Piper PA-46 Malibu, vanished from radar around 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Guernsey, with pilot Ibbotson the only other person aboard.

After the official rescue team gave up their search, saying there was little chance of finding anyone alive, Sala's family raised more than 370,000 euros ($422,000) in an online campaign to pay for a private hunt.

"Had that not happened, I don't think anybody would have searched for the plane," said shipwreck hunter David Mearns, whose private company found the plane before calling in the AAIB.

The discovery of two seat cushions on the French coast last week revealed that the plane was broken, Mearns added.

Earlier this week Sala's father, Horacio Sala, acknowledged that there was no prospect of finding his son alive.

"There's no longer any hope," he told Fox Sports.

"We hope the two bodies are inside (the plane). It's over, the only thing I hope now is that they find them."

Fans of Liverpool and Manchester City are set to watch this season's Premier League title race from "inside the game", even through the eyes of Sergio Aguero or Mohamed Salah, thanks to the latest in broadcasting innovation.

Technology giant Intel has partnered with champions City, Liverpool and Arsenal to introduce its state-of-the-art True View system to the Etihad, Anfield and Emirates stadiums.

True View, used in TV coverage of Sunday's Super Bowl and also to bring fans courtside in NBA, will allow 360-degree replays of all the key moments.

The cutting-edge technology will also allow viewers to experience winning goals, flying saves or last-ditch tackles from the perspective of the players on the pitch.

Using 38 5K ultra-high-definition cameras to capture vast quantities of "volumetric data" -- or three dimensional pixels -- Intel's servers then crunch it all down to provide incredible 3D replays from every conceivable angle.

In 2018 technology investments into sports reached nearly $1 billion -- much of it to satisfy a seemingly insatiable demand for content across traditional TV platforms and social media.

True View, according to James Carwana, vice president and general manager of Intel Sports, is a step further than anything Premier League fans will have experienced before, whether watching host broadcaster coverage or through club websites.

"Immersive media experiences continue to create more opportunities for sports teams and leagues to put the fan experience first," Carwana said at the London launch.

Billy Hogan, Liverpool's chief commercial officer, said True View would offer fans a completely new experience.

"We have seen some similar types of examples where they use more of a video-game looking feel, but this is the real match in a way where fans can see what the player is seeing on the ball," Hogan told Reuters.

"The ability to feel like you are actually on the pitch is something really exciting for the broadcast experience.

"It's deeply engaging from a fans perspective and from our perspective it's 24-7, 365-day interaction with our supporters whether they are nearby or on the other side of the world."

Only three Premier League clubs have so far joined with Intel with True View set to be rolled out "later this year".

Six La Liga clubs already have it installed.

Manchester City's senior vice president of Partnerships Damian Willoughby said True View fits into the club's ethos for innovation which saw it offer free stadium wifi on matchdays and "tunnel cam" which offers fans a peek "behind the scenes".

"It's about how we enhance the fans' experience and give our global audience a deeper experience of the content around the game," he said. "For us this is a natural extension of us being the cutting edge of fan engagement.

"We're possibly just scratching the surface of what's possible."

"It's about how we enhance the fans' experience and give our global audience a deeper experience of the content around the game," he said. "For us this is a natural extension of us being the cutting edge of fan engagement. "We're possibly just scratching the surface of what's possible."

Argentine football star Emiliano Sala's father Sunday was awakened from a sound sleep to learn that <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/footballer-emiliano-salas-missing-plane-found-claim-investigators-194908">the plane in which his son was probably killed, has been found.</a>

"I can't believe it. It's a bad dream," Horacio Sala said when contacted by Cronica TV at his home in Progreso.

He was the only one to stay behind in Argentina when the family rushed to Nantes, France to try to help with the search.

"I talk to them every day. But since I don't have WhatsApp it's expensive to call them or for them to call me. But anyway, they kept saying days were going by, and that there had been zero word on Emiliano, or on the plane," his father said.

Sala was travelling from France to join up with his new club, Premier League side Cardiff City, in a light aircraft on January 21 when it went missing close to the Channel Islands.

Suspected debris from the plane washed up on the Normandy coastline in France last Wednesday.

Sala was flying in the Piper PA-46 Malibu plane after transferring from French team Nantes in a 17 million euro ($19.3 million) move.

Top footballers were among more than 4,500 contributors to a crowd funding page that raised over 300,000 euros ($343,000) to look for the wreck.

Sergio Aguero's hat-trick led Manchester City to a 3-1 win over&nbsp;Arsenal&nbsp;on Sunday and back into second place in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Liverpool.

The victory put the pressure on Liverpool ahead off their trip to West Ham United on Monday. Juergen Klopp's side have 61 points with champions City on 59 and Tottenham Hotspur on 57.

Aguero gave City the lead after 48 seconds with a stooping header after Aymeric Laporte had robbed Alex Iwobi and whipped in a cross.

City were dominant but the Gunners got back on level terms in the 11th minute when Nacho Monreal flicked on a Lucas Torreira corner and defender Laurent Koscielny headed in from two yards out.

Aguero struck again just before the break, tapping in a low cross from Raheem Sterling, who had combined well with Ilkay Gundogan in the build-up.

City's record scorer wrapped up the win with Sterling again the provider but as Aguero slid in to meet his low cross, the ball appeared to go in off his arm.

It was Aguero's 10th hat-trick in the Premier League, a record bettered only by Alan Shearer who scored 11. The Argentine striker has netted 20 goals in all competitions this season -- the sixth straight campaign he has reached that tally.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains unbeaten 10 games into his caretaker reign of Manchester United as the rejuvenated Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba combined to earn a 1-0 win at Leicester on Sunday to close in on the Premier League top four.

Rashford blasted home his sixth goal since Solskjaer took charge after taking an exquisite touch to control Pogba's lofted pass and United held out to move above Arsenal into fifth and within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea.

A 2-2 draw at home to Burnley in midweek is the only match Solskjaer has failed to win and much of that form is owed to the turnaround in both Rashford and Pogba's roles since Mourinho was sacked in December with United 11 points adrift of the top four.

Solskjaer again chose to leave Romelu Lukaku on the substitutes’ bench, with Rashford preferred as his centre-forward.

The England striker took just nine minutes to respond with the crucial goal, having already missed a good chance when he headed over when unmarked from Nemanja Matic's cross.

Rashford's confidence was clearly unaffected, as he took just four minutes to respond in style. Ricardo Pereira was the guilty party for Leicester with a dangerous ball that was intercepted by Pogba.

The Frenchman proceeded to display his deftness of his touch with a beautiful pass that was lofted over the Leicester backline for Rashford to run onto and he did the rest, taking a touch before drilling a low shot past a helpless Kasper Schmeichel.

"That pass by Paul Pogba is great and the control by Marcus better," added Solskjaer.&nbsp;

Leicester have now conceded in the first 11 minutes in each of their last five games.

"It's crazy. At the start we don't believe enough in our quality," said under-fire Leicester boss Claude Puel. "Afterwards we play with intent and we can hurt teams like United.

"It's a big disappointment because we found good quality in the second-half with a lot of chances to come back."

However, as is often the case on the road, United relied on goalkeeper David de Gea for all three points as a Leicester side that have often troubled the top six this season improved after half-time.

Twice the Spaniard stood tall to deny Jamie Vardy, but De Gea's best save came from Rachid Ghezzal's free-kick that arrowed towards the top corner.

"Leicester got in a few dangerous positions, David de Gea made a few great saves and blocks," said Solskjaer.

"We could have done better higher up the pitch in terms of defending but we deserved the three points I thought," he added.

A Ghezzal goal would have been rich vindication for Puel who was met with chants of "you don’t know what you’re doing" from his own fans for replacing James Maddison with the Algerian just after the hour mark.

Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire also failed to hit the target as the Foxes laid seige towards the United goal in search of an equaliser that never came to pile more pressure on the under-fire Puel.

His stock at Leicester remains on the slide but Solskjaer’s at Old Trafford continues to soar.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp says his team have shown they are mentally equipped to handle a title run-in, having acquitted themselves well in high-pressure situations over the past few years.

Liverpool, who are five points ahead of defending champions Manchester City at the top of the table, drew 1-1 at home to Leicester City on Wednesday, prompting questions about their ability to stay the course as tension mounts in the run-in.

"Yes, there is pressure," Klopp told Liverpool's official website ahead of Monday's league game at West Ham United.

"There was pressure last year, a lot of pressure when we played Manchester City away in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and we dealt with it.

"There was pressure (in the Champions League semi-finals) at Rome, there was pressure in so many moments in the Premier League. We had to win each game.

"Will there be nervous moments? Yes, for sure. Don't make them bigger than they are because there were nervous situations last year, two years ago, three years ago. That is part of football."

Liverpool could end a 29-year wait for the league title if they can hold on until the end of the season and Klopp knows the club's fans are likely to be feeling tense.

"This club has not been champions for 29 years, so how can people sit there and watch it like (they are watching) City?" he said.

"I don't know how often they have been champions in the last five or six years – 'Yeah, one more, why not? Whatever.'

"It's a different situation. We really, the people really, desperately want it, that is how it is, they really want it with all they have. I get that and we try with all we have. But there are no guarantees. I am not a nervous person."

Juergen Klopp dismisses talk of Liverpool crumbling under pressure

Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard described new signing Gonzalo Higuain as "unbelievable" in the box after the Argentina international scored twice in Saturday's 5-0 thrashing of the Premier League's bottom side Huddersfield Town.

Chelsea signed Higuain in January and bounced back from a disappointing 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth in midweek with a rampant performance against Town, with both Hazard and Higuain netting two goals each.

"We all needed that," Belgium international Hazard told Chelsea's TV channel. "We did well, so just happy with the result, the way we played today, especially after the game on Wednesday.

"It was hard but I think the manager wanted us to respond and we did."

Higuain worked under Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri at Napoli, scoring 38 times in their final season together at the Italian side in 2015-16.

Hazard said he had benefited from training with Higuain for the past 10 days and backed his new team mate to be a success in England.

"We've improved together," he said. "We've trained together now for 10 days. He's a great striker... he can hold the ball, he can play one touch, he's intelligent. In the box he's unbelievable, so he will score more goals, I think."

Next up for Chelsea is an away game against Manchester City, who host Arsenal in the league later on Sunday.

Hazard believes his team have a good chance of beating defending champions City for the second time this season.

Chelsea won the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge 2-0 at the start of December.

"We need to be focused," Hazard added. "It's going to be a different game than two or three months ago. I think they will have the ball, because it's City, they have these sort of players to play together.

"But we will defend well and then we will score one goal or two."

Manchester United confirmed the departure of midfielder Marouane Fellaini to Chinese Super League side Shandong Luneng on Friday, marking the end of the Belgium international's chequered career at the Premier League team.

United did not provide financial details of the transfer in a short statement where they thanked the 31-year-old for his services in five-and-a-half seasons at the club.

Fellaini's arrival in 2013 as a $35.99 million&nbsp;signing by his former Everton boss David Moyes was hardly greeted with enthusiasm by United fans, already underwhelmed by the choice of the successor to Alex Ferguson.

The tall midfielder was used as an auxiliary striker at times by former United managers Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho but has been out of favour under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fellaini, who signed a two-year deal with United until 2020 in June, departs having made 177 appearances in all competitions for the Old Trafford club.

He helped them win the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Europa League trophies. Fellaini's move brings an end to more than a decade playing in England, where he first signed with Everton from Belgian side Standard Liege in 2008.

Mauricio Pochettino is disappointed by Tottenham Hotspur's failure to sign any players in the January transfer window but the manager says his team will keep fighting to finish as high up the table as they can.

Spurs are the first team in the Premier League era not to sign a player in consecutive transfer windows but despite the lack of fresh faces they sit behind only Liverpool and Manchester City ahead of Saturday's home game against Newcastle United.

"Of course I wanted to strengthen the squad but if we cannot sign, I need to stick with the project of the club," Pochettino told his weekly news conference.

"Of course (I am) disappointed because we are in a very good position and maybe with a help from some players we can remove the excuse that we are not a real contender.

"But we are close ... and we will fight to the end to be as high as we can."

Spurs were linked with a move for Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi on transfer deadline day, but the 25-year-old joined Crystal Palace on loan in a deal announced after the window closed on Thursday.

Pochettino, who declined to comment on Batshuayi, said he would allow Dutch striker Vincent Janssen back into the first team after the player failed to secure a move away.

Janssen, who joined Spurs in 2016, had been training with the under-23 side.

"He is going to be involved with the first team from today, like another player with chances to be involved or play" Pochettino said.

"Before it was clear, he wanted to leave and was not in our plan. Now when you cannot achieve what you want, it's important for him to feel again he can be helpful."

Mauricio Pochettino disappointed as it's been a year since Tottenham signed anyone

Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock said some players did not want to join the Welsh club in the January transfer window after new signing <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/factbox-cardiff-city-striker-emiliano-sala-192054">Emiliano Sala</a>'s flight disappeared over the English Channel last week.

Cardiff's 28-year-old record signing Sala was en route from Nantes with pilot David Ibbotson when his plane disappeared on Jan. 21. He is <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/plane-carrying-cardiff-city-striker-emiliano-sala-goes-missing-191987">yet to be found</a>.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's Premier League encounter with Bournemouth, Warnock described the January transfer window as "difficult" in the tragic circumstances.

"One or two of the strikers we were talking about did not really want to come in the circumstances," Warnock told a news conference on Friday.

"They didn't want to come in after what's happened. So it's been a very difficult window."

Cardiff managed to sign Leandro Bacuna from Reading on Thursday's transfer deadline day and Warnock said he was pleased with what the Curacao international could offer.

"We were fortunate we managed to get Bacuna over the line. He's a player I like and I've watched over the last three years," Warnock added.

"He can play wherever the need is. I've seen him at right back, left back playing in central midfield and also on the right wing. He's versatile."

Cardiff are 18th in the table with 19 points from 24 games.

Manchester City, Liverpool look for fresh impetus after Premier League stumbles

Premier League spending in the January transfer window fell for the first time since 2012 after three of the top six clubs decided not to add players to the squad, according to a Deloitte report published on Friday.

Thursday's deadline day spending accounted for 50 million pounds ($65.49 million) -- bringing the month's spending to 180 million pounds.

That is less than half of January 2018 spending of 430 million pounds, which included Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for a world record deal fee for a defender.

The top six Premier League clubs - Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United - accounted for 43 percent of expenditure, lower than January last year when this figure stood at 62 percent.

Tottenham are set to play the entire 2018-19 campaign without recruiting players, having failed to add new faces over the last two transfer windows.

Liverpool, United, Everton and Southampton also chose not to sign anyone in January.

"With central distributions to clubs now likely to remain around current levels until at least the end of the 2021-22 season, clubs are potentially taking a more long-term view to their transfer strategies," Tim Bridge, director in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said.

January spending was at 225 million pounds in 2011 but fell to 60 million pounds in the following year.

This year's biggest transfer move of the January window came from Chelsea, who spent 55 million pounds for Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund.

For the first time since 2005, Newcastle United broke their transfer record to sign Paraguayan playmaker Miguel Almiron from Major League Soccer side Atlanta United for 20 million pounds.

Wolverhampton Wanderers completed the signing of Atletico Madrid full back Jonny Otto for 15 million pounds after a successful loan spell.

Defending champions Manchester City signed Hajduk Split midfielder Ante Palaversa for 7 million pounds and loaned him back to the Croatian side.

The Deloitte report also confirmed that clubs in the bottom six of the standings recorded spending of 20 million pounds, compared to 90 million pounds in the same period last year.

If more proof were needed of how unpredictable the Premier League can be it was provided on Wednesday as Liverpool blew a chance take a vice-like grip on the title race and Chelsea suffered their worst league defeat in 23 years.

After champions Manchester City's shock loss at Newcastle United on Tuesday and Manchester United's home draw with Burnley, Liverpool caught the bug at home to Leicester City.

Victory would have sent Juergen Klopp's side seven points clear of City with 14 games remaining but they could only draw 1-1 despite Sadio Mane giving them a third-minute lead.

Chelsea collapsed to a 4-0 thrashing at Bournemouth as the Premier League's supposed lesser lights continued to cause mischief at the top end of the table.

Liverpool, seeking a first title since 1990, have still increased the gap over City from four points to five but it was night of jitters at a freezing Anfield.

To make matters worse Leicester's scorer Harry Maguire had been fortunate to still be on the pitch after a professional foul on Mane with the score 1-0 to the home side.

Liverpool also had a strong penalty claim waved away in the second half when Naby Keita was fouled by Ricardo Pereira.

"If that is not a real chance and goalscoring situation, I do not know what is," Klopp said of Maguire's escape.

Of the penalty claim he said: "It was probably the clearest penalty situation we have had. The ref was in the best position on the pitch. You will have to ask him why he didn't give it."

Mane's opener came after a superb passing move but thereafter Liverpool's inspiration ran dry and Maguire scored from close range shortly before halftime after the hosts failed to deal properly with a free kick.

"We have a point more, not exactly what we wanted, but it is fine," Klopp said of the draw.

CHELSEA DRUBBING

Tottenham Hotspur looked as though they were also about to stumble but came from behind to beat Watford with late goals for Son Heung-min -- in his first game since returning from the Asia Cup -- and Fernando Llorente at Wembley.

It left Mauricio Pochettino's side just two points behind Manchester City and seven off Liverpool, opening up the possibility of a three-horse title race.

Perhaps of more importance for third-placed Tottenham, however, is the seven-point lead they have over Arsenal and Chelsea in the battle for fourth spot.

Chelsea's 4-0 drubbing at Bournemouth -- a second consecutive league defeat -- left the spotlight focussed on manager Maurizio Sarri who locked himself in the changing room with his players for 45 minutes after the game.

It was only the second time since the Premier League began in 1992 that Chelsea have suffered a four-goal defeat and the first since a 5-1 loss to Liverpool in 1996.

They had dominated the first half with Mateo Kovacic's header being touched onto the bar by Bournemouth keeper Artur Boruc. But even with Gonzalo Higuain making his first Premier league start, they lacked penetration.

The second half was a horror show as Joshua King scored twice either side of one for David Brooks with substitute Charlie Daniels completing the rout in stoppage time.

Bournemouth's win came a year after they beat Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

It was Daniels' goal that meant Chelsea slipped below Arsenal on fewer goals scored and with Manchester United only a further two points in arrears, Chelsea's top-four hopes are wavering.

Southampton and Crystal Palace remain too close to the relegation zone for comfort after a 1-1 draw at St Mary's in which Palace had goalscorer Wilfried Zaha sent off.

James Ward-Prowse secured a point for Southampton with a 77th-minute equaliser.

Leaders Liverpool stumble, Chelsea collapse

Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha has apologised to his team mates for getting sent off in his side's 1-1 draw with Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Zaha, who had given Palace a first half lead at St Mary's, was dismissed for sarcastically applauding referee Andre Marriner in the 87th minute, moments after being cautioned for tangling with James Ward-Prowse.

"All I can do is apologise to the team and the fans for my red card tonight because I could have cost us today," the 26-year-old Ivory Coast international wrote on Twitter.

"I will learn from it for sure."

Palace boss Roy Hodgson felt sympathetic towards Zaha, who was fouled multiple times during the match, but said he cannot "condone" the reaction that led to his dismissal.

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he will not be satisfied with a top-four finish in the Premier League as he targets success in two cup competitions in the second half of the season.

Sixth-placed United have won all six league games since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea from 11 points to three, while they are still in the FA Cup and Champions League contentions.

"For Man Utd you should always aim to win the league," he told reporters ahead of Tuesday's league clash against Burnley.

"We can't do that this year, but we have to get back to the challenge. We've got the Champions League, we've got the FA Cup, we can't just say we've got top four and that is it."

United's last trophy - the Europa League - came in 2017 but they have not won the Premier League since former coach Alex Ferguson's final season at Old Trafford in 2012-13.

Although Solskjaer admits a league title challenge is unrealistic this season, he backs the squad to catch Tottenham Hotspur, who are seven points ahead in third place.

"We are sixth at the moment, so we are a way off the top teams. We are challenging to be top three at the moment," the Norwegian added.

"It's about reorganising and just starting next season to be ready to challenge and get more points."

United will play defending champions Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round on Feb. 16, four days after they take on French champions Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League last 16.

Pep Guardiola: Need to let Liverpool 'feel we are there'

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has not played enough games in the past few seasons to warrant a new contract despite his invaluable contributions to the Premier League club's success, manager Pep Guardiola has said.&nbsp;

Kompany, whose contract ends this season, has missed numerous games due to muscle injuries in the past few seasons and Guardiola said a contract extension is something the club will have to discuss with the player and his agent.

"He's incredible, but the reality is in the last five years he's played few, really few," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Tuesday's league trip to Newcastle United.

"We don't have any doubts about his quality, we miss him when he is not able to play. He's important, he is our captain and on the field he gives us extra that few central defenders around the world can give us.

"That is the situation we have to put on the table and the club will discuss it with his agent and make the best decision for both."

Kompany has been at the club since 2008 and has won seven major trophies, including three league titles, but Guardiola said any decision to extend the Belgium defender's contract should not be made on sentiment alone.

"The club knows the sentimental issue is so important," Guardiola added. "It's not important for making decisions, but they have to feel, especially for the players who have been here a long time and helped us to build what we are right now.

Arsenal coach Unai Emery said their prime focus is the Premier League but also confirmed they will play the Europa League with "great motivation."&nbsp;

"Our focus now is very clear and it's the Premier League, it's our first (meaning main) focus," said Arsenal's coach Emery during a press conference.&nbsp;

"Tomorrow we need to impose and to adapt. I think they're going to play with a big motivation, also and finding a lot of duels against us.

"We need tomorrow to be concentrated for the three points like we were against Chelsea."

However, did not confirm if Ivan Perisic will join Arsenal despite Italian and British reporting that the 29-year-old Croatia international has handed in a transfer request to Inter Milan.&nbsp;

I cannot said exactly which players (will join us) but they are players who can help us, and that can play as right or left winger,'' said Emery when asked about possible arrivals to the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain, who will join the club on loan from Juventus until the end of the season, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.

Higuain joins Chelsea after his year-long loan spell with AC Milan was cut to less than six months. The deal reunites the striker with Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, who was manager of Napoli when Higuain was at the club.

"When the opportunity to join Chelsea presented itself I had to take it. It’s a team I’ve always liked that has a lot of history, a wonderful stadium and they play in the Premier League, a league I’ve always wanted to play in," Higuain said in a statement on the Chelsea website.

"I now hope I can give back that trust Chelsea have shown me out on the pitch. I can’t wait to start and I hope to adapt as soon as possible."

The deal, however, has come too late for him to face Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup semi-final, second leg on Thursday.

The 31-year-old did not sign before Wednesday's midday deadline and cannot therefore play against Spurs at Stamford Bridge in a match Chelsea trail 1-0 from the first leg.

Higuain's spell at Milan started with six goals in seven games but he has only scored once in his last 12 appearances.

Sarri hopes he will rediscover the form that saw him score 38 times in their final season together at Napoli in 2015-16.

"He has had some difficulties recently, but we're hoping we can raise him back to his best form," Sarri told reporters on Wednesday.

"He's still scored eight goals in a team that isn't at the same level as Juventus.

"He's a very strong striker. Especially in my first season in Naples. He scored 36 goals in 35 matches in Serie A. For sure, he is one of the best strikers in my career."

Difficult Market

Sarri was keen to boost his goalscoring options after dropping misfiring Spain forward Alvaro Morata and deploying playmaker Eden Hazard as a 'false nine' in recent games.

Asked if the arrival of Higuain was a sign that the club are behind him, Sarri said: "I hope so. I think the club agree with me when I told them my opinion about the team.

"The January market is very difficult, especially for a striker. It's very difficult in January to find one of the most important strikers in the world."

Chelsea are in the fourth and final Champions League qualifying spot in the Premier League standings, three points ahead of Arsenal who beat them 2-0 on Saturday.

Higuain moved to Milan from Juventus on loan in August in a complex three-way deal which also saw defender Mattia Caldara move from the Turin side to the seven-times European champions and Leondardo Bonucci move in the other direction.

Milan paid 18 million euros (16.03 million pounds) for a one-year loan with an option to buy when Higuain became surplus to requirements at Juventus following their signing of Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

After joining Juventus from Napoli in 2016, Higuain won Serie A and Coppa Italia titles in each of his first two seasons with Juve and netted 55 goals in 105 appearances in all competitions, including 40 in 73 Serie A outings.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview in October that he was "sent away" by Juventus and had not wanted to leave, although there were no hard feelings.

Deprived of the service he enjoyed at Juventus and previously at Napoli, he scored only eight goals in 22 appearances for Milan -- well below his usual prolific best.

Higuain has faced criticism that he fails to make an impact on the big occasion.

He is often remembered for the miss in the 2014 World Cup final against Germany where a mistake left him with only goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to beat and he fired wide of the goal. Argentina went on to lose the match 1-0 after extra time.

Rescuers end search for missing plane carrying football star Emiliano Sala

Real Madrid and Barcelona were the highest earning clubs in European football last season, knocking Manchester United off top spot, according to the latest Deloitte 'Football Money League' published on Thursday.

Deloitte based their survey of the top 20 earning clubs in Europe on the annual financial statements of the company or group running each club, or other direct sources, covering the 2017/18 season.

Real returned to top spot for the first time since 2014/15 with revenues of €750.9 million ($854.6 million). Their revenue increased by more than €75 million year-on-year as they secured their third successive Champions League title.&nbsp;

Deloitte said the rise was "primarily due to commercial growth of €54.8million&nbsp;including an uplift in sponsorship, merchandising and exploitation of increasingly lucrative pre-season fixtures."

Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte said: "Real Madrid’s outstanding financial performance in 2017/18 is built on their long history of success on the pitch, most recently three consecutive Champions League titles.

"This has enabled the club to continue to drive commercial revenue as the appetite to partner with Europe’s most successful clubs remains stronger than ever," he added.

Barcelona had earnings of €690.4 million, a rise from 648.3 million in the previous year.

Manchester United, who topped last year's table, saw their revenue calculation fall slightly to €666 million from 676.3 million but they are one of a record six Premier League teams in top 10.

Football finance expert Rob Wilson, of Sheffield Hallam University, said United's drop to third in the rankings was expected.

"This was predictable mainly due to the timing of commercial and sponsorship renewals. The big-ticket items; shirt manufacturing and shirt sponsorship being renewed and improving the overall position of a number of clubs.

"MUFC don’t go back to the negotiating table for a while yet. Expect them to stay off the top spot for a good few years yet, particularly with a possible reduction in matchday revenue if they miss out on qualification to the Champions League."

United's position was also affected by exchange rates as their actual revenue measured in pounds sterling rose slightly from 581.2 million to 590 million.

The club is rated the number one football brand by KPMG and the most valuable club by Forbes.

There are no Italian clubs in the top 10 with Juventus slipping to 11th place, while Bayern Munich are the sole German club.
