Cristiano Ronaldo broke his goal drought to score Manchester United's opener in a 2-0 defeat of Brighton & Hove Albion that lifted them into the Premier League's top four on Tuesday.

Ronaldo, without a goal since December and dropped to the bench by interim manager Ralf Rangnick in some recent matches, answered his critics five minutes after halftime with a superb finish after being played in by Scott McTominay.

Brighton had been the better side before halftime with United again looking disjointed and lacking spark.

But their hopes of responding after falling behind were damaged when Lewis Dunk was sent off after a foul on Anthony Elanga, an initial yellow card being upgraded to red.

Even then United were unconvincing and Brighton's Jakub Moder curled an effort against the crossbar before former United striker Danny Welbeck headed over a late chance.

Bruno Fernandes gave the scoreline a flattering look with a well-taken solo goal in stoppage time as United moved above West Ham United into the fourth spot with 43 points from 25 games.

The opening 45 minutes were tough to watch for United fans with Brighton looking the more polished side.

But for a sensational save by David de Gea to deny Moder's header, the boos at halftime would have been louder.

Ronaldo changed the mood, however, after the break.

He had gone six games without a goal, his driest spell at club level since a run of seven games without scoring between December 2008 and January 2009.

Some have even suggested his second spell at United was fizzling out but his goal against Brighton was vintage Ronaldo.

When Brighton lost possession and McTominay fed Ronaldo he swerved away from three defenders and with minimal backlift, smashed a shot past Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez.

"An amazing goal," Rangnick said. "Not only an important one but an amazing goal and I think overall it was a good performance by Cristiano.

"Energetically, he was always trying to help teammates and I think in the last weeks definitely the best performance by him and a very, very important goal for us."

Brighton got themselves in trouble again soon afterwards trying to play out from the back and Dunk was too casual, losing the ball to Elanga who he then dragged back.

Despite being down to 10 men Brighton continued to cause United problems and it was quite a relief for the hosts when Fernandes broke away from the halfway line and sat Sanchez down before tucking away a fine goal.

It was only ninth-placed Brighton's second away league defeat of the season and manager Graham Potter could only marvel at Ronaldo's quality.

"Punished by a world-class finish from a world-class player," he said.

Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen said he is determined to prove that he is the same player as before he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch last year, as he nears a return to action with Premier League side Brentford.

Eriksen was unveiled as a Brentford player on Friday, nearly eight months to the day since he collapsed on the pitch and received life-saving treatment during Denmark's Euro 2020 clash with Finland.

The Dane joined West London side Brentford in January and is now fitted with a special heart-starting device known as an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD).

He was forced to terminate his contract with Inter Milan in December because footballers fitted with an ICD are not permitted to play in Serie A, but having been given a chance by Brentford, he is determined to grasp it with both hands.

"Of course I have not forgotten how to play football and my body is still the same and my vision and my ability will still be the same," he told a news conference on Friday. "That has not changed.

"I want to show that I am still the same player as before. My ICD is here for my protection. It is in because, if anything would happen to me, there is no need for a defibrillator because I will have my own. It is really just extra security.

"And that is how I feel. I feel very protected with it. I feel normal. I don't feel it in any annoying way. Only going through the airport, I have to go around instead of going through a scanner."

Coach Thomas Frank also said on Friday that Eriksen is impressing in training, but does not believe he is quite ready to play for Brentford against Crystal Palace this weekend.

Eriksen is not just eager to return to club football.

"My aim is I want to be fit for the World Cup (in December)," Eriksen added. "It is about building up in training and getting some minutes on the pitch under my belt.

"There are a lot of months to go until the World Cup starts, and I will be doing everything I can to make sure I am there."

A shareholders' meeting on Thursday (February 10) has decided that English Premier League will remove a number of emergency measures related to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The United Kingdom was one of the countries that faced the wrath of the Omicron variant as Covid cases continued to rise in the UK after the 'variant of concern' was first detected last year in November.

In December and January, more than 20 Premier League games were called off due to COVID-19 outbreaks at several clubs. More than 100 cases were reported over the Christmas period as the teams didn't even have enough players to fulfil fixtures.

Liverpool closed the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City to nine points as Diogo Jota`s doubled earned Juergen Klopp`s side a 2-0 victory over Leicester City on Thursday. After City`s 2-0 win over Brentford on Wednesday extended their advantage at the top, second-placed Liverpool needed to issue a response, edging in front in the first half at Anfield thanks to Jota`s close-range finish.

Mohamed Salah came off the bench to rapturous applause to make his first appearance since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, with the Egyptian striker curling a sumptuous effort against the post as Liverpool pressed for a second.

That second did not look like it was going to come as chances continued to come and go, but Jota remained ruthless in the penalty area, drilling home the game-clinching goal three minutes from time.

The win moved Liverpool onto 51 points from 23 games, with leaders City having played one game more, while Leicester`s poor season continued as they remain languishing down in 12th in the standings.

"I always like to get into those spaces," Jota told BT Sport. "I was lucky enough to be in the right place and to score.

"There was obviously an established front three (at Liverpool before he joined) but we have more options now and that is good for the team."

Another of those attacking options is Luis Diaz, who was handed his Premier League debut by Klopp after signing for Liverpool during the January transfer window, with the Colombian showing off his skills to get fans off their seats early on.

Trent Alexander-Arnold forced Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel into a fine save, before Andrew Robertson almost got on the end of a low cross at the back post.

When Liverpool finally made their pressure pay, the goal came via a familiar source, with Jota reacting quickest to Schmeichel`s save to keep out Virgil van Dijk`s header from a corner.

Leicester beat Liverpool in the reverse fixture between these teams earlier in the season, but they never looked like getting back into the game at Anfield.

Salah`s introduction re-energised the hosts, with Liverpool`s top goalscorer twice denied by Schmeichel, before then hitting the woodwork.

The dazzling Diaz was then next to be denied by Schmeichel, before Jota made one count, squeezing his 12th league goal of the season home to put the game to bed.

Jay Rodriguez`s second-half goal gave Burnley what could be a valuable point in their battle against relegation in the Premier League as they claimed a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Turf Moor on Tuesday. Man Utd dominated the first half and after Raphael Varane`s goal was ruled out for offside, they went ahead on 18 minutes when Luke Shaw found Paul Pogba, who placed his shot into the corner.

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen said joining Premier League club Brentford offers him the opportunity to return to a "normal life" as he seeks a comeback seven months after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Eriksen, who collapsed during a European Championship match against Finland in Copenhagen and was given life-saving CPR treatment in front of shocked fans and teammates, signed for Brentford last month as a free agent for the rest of the season.

The 29-year-old is now fitted with a special heart-starting device known as an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). Inter Milan terminated his contract in December because the ICD device is not permitted in Serie A.

"The challenge was more overcoming what really happened. You want to get back to normal, but for me, normal was getting back to playing in Italy but I wasn`t allowed to do this," Eriksen said in a club interview late on Monday.

"So for me, the normal had to change. We have the chance to get back to a normal life at Brentford."

Eriksen has not played a competitive match since his collapse, although he trained with his former club Ajax Amsterdam to build up his fitness.

"I feel very good, been doing a lot of running so condition and strength-wise, I am in a very good place. It`s only the football touch that needs to come back. The training and game minutes to get up to speed," he added.

"I`m excited to show that you can, with an ICD, and if you have had a cardiac arrest, if you do the proper tests and everything is OK you can play again. I am happy about it."

Premier League sides can apply for a fixture postponement only if they have a minimum of four positive COVID-19 cases in their squads, the league said on Wednesday following a meeting of representatives of all 20 clubs.

A total of 22 games have been called off this season due to COVID-19 outbreaks and the subsequent unavailability of players, with the league being criticised by some clubs for their handling of the crisis.

Earlier, a match could be postponed if one of the teams did not have 13 available outfield players -- and one goalkeeper -- "either from its squad list or its appropriately experienced Under-21 players".

Anthony Martial has denied refusing to be in Manchester United`s squad for Saturday`s Premier League game against Aston Villa after interim manager Ralf Rangnick said the Frenchman did not want to be involved.

The 26-year-old forward has started only two league games this season and has not featured since a 3-2 win over Arsenal on Dec. 2. Martial`s representative has said he wants to secure a move in January to get more game time.

United are struggling for players due to injuries, COVID-19 and the Africa Cup of Nations but Martial played no part in the 2-2 draw with Villa.

"He didn`t want to be in the squad," the coach told a news conference. "He would have been in the squad normally, but he didn`t want to and that was the reason why he didn`t travel with us yesterday."
However, Martial refuted Rangnick`s comments.

Manchester City took a major step towards retaining their Premier League title with a 1-0 win over second-placed Chelsea on Saturday, opening up a 13-point lead at the top of the table for Pep Guardiola`s side.

Kevin De Bruyne`s 70th-minute strike means that City have 56 points from 22 matches with Chelsea on 43 points. Third-placed Liverpool, who have two games in hand, including Sunday`s match at home to Brentford, are on 42 points.

City extended their winning run in the league to 12 games, and deservedly so after another display of their controlled possession football.

But it was a disappointing effort from a Chelsea side which rarely threatened, displayed scant ambition and little reaction after De Bruyne`s goal.

There were surprises in both team line-ups, with Guardiola leaving central defender Ruben Dias on the bench and Thomas Tuchel making the same choice over midfielder Mason Mount.

It was a fine solo goal from De Bruyne which settled the outcome, the Belgian riding a challenge from N`golo Kante before beating Kepa Arrizabalaga with a curling shot into the far corner.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said there are additional COVID-19 cases at the club following last week`s outbreak as they prepare to take on second-placed Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Guardiola, who missed Friday`s 4-1 FA Cup third round victory over Swindon Town after returning a positive test, did not specify whether the new cases were among players or members of staff while the number of cases was also not mentioned.

Last Thursday, City confirmed Guardiola and his assistant Juanma Lillo were among seven first-team players and 14 backroom staff who were isolating for COVID-19 related reasons.

"We have some new cases, they want privacy so I can`t say," Guardiola told reporters on Friday, adding some players who missed the Swindon game will remain unavailable after continuing to return positive tests.

"We played Aston Villa with 11 first team players. The last six, seven games there are four or five academy players on the bench. We are in the same situation as all other clubs.

"Before we tried to plan the next few days but what we`ve learned is to take it day by day, take decisions a few hours before a training session or game because we can be okay and then in four or five hours we have positive cases."

Aston Villa have signed Brazilian international Philippe Coutinho on a loan deal until the end of the season from Barcelona, the Premier League club said on Friday. He will be reunited with former captain Steven Gerrard, with the pair playing together at Anfield from 2013-15 and Gerrard now managing Villa.

Coutinho, who has won two league trophies and two Copa del Rey titles with Barcelona, has played 16 times for the club this season in all competitions and scored two goals.

The 29-year-old previously spent six years in the Premier League playing for Liverpool, where he made over 200 appearances and scored 54 goals. Gerrard heaped praise on Coutinho on Thursday.

The agreement, subject to a medical and a work permit being granted, includes the option to make the transfer permanent, Villa said.
Coutinho joined Barcelona in January 2018 for approximately 142 million pounds ($192 million) but has not been able to establish himself in the first team at Camp Nou and he spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Bayern Munich.

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly considering leaving the club at the end of the ongoing 2021-22 season. Ronaldo had joined United from Juventus ahead of the start of the ongoing season and has had a fine start to life at Old Trafford. He has so far scored 14 goals in 22 appearances for the club across competitions.

However, his on-field exploits have not been enough for the club to solidify their spot in the top four of the Premier League points table as United continue to struggle for consistency. The Red Devils suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Wolves in their last Premier League outing and are currently placed seventh with 31 points from 19 matches this season.

It had been a fairytale return to United for the Portuguese icon after a nightmarish season at Juventus. However, Ronaldo's time at Old Trafford can end soon as he is reportedly considering leaving the club amid poor results and his unhappiness over interim manager Ralf Rangnick's tactics and training methods.

As per a report in Daily Star, Ronaldo's future at Manchester United depends on who will the club appoint as their permanent manager once Rangnick's tenure as the interim boss is over at the end of the current season. The report also states that Manchester United's new executive officer Richard Arnold will be under pressure to deliver the right managerial appointment.

Ronaldo might not have had set the season on fire for United in the Premier League but he has been among the goals. The Portuguese icon is currently sitting 4th on the list of highest goal-scorers this season with eight goals to his name in the league.

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettinho's name has been doing the rounds for a while now to become the next manager of Manchester United. However, the likes of Erik Ten Haag, Brendan Rodgers and others are also said to be in consideration. It remains to be seen who will United appoint as their full-time manager at the end of the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Manchester United? CR7's future at Old Trafford depends on new manager - Report

Chelsea fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Liverpool in a breathless encounter between the two title chasers at Stamford Bridge on Sunday but the stalemate left Manchester City 10 points clear at the top.

The draw meant Chelsea remained second on 43 points from 21 games, one point ahead of Liverpool, who have a game in hand, and leaders Manchester City who have 53 points from 21.

With both sides weakened by key absences - and Chelsea dropping striker Romelu Lukaku after he criticised the tactics of coach Thomas Tuchel - Liverpool quickly seemed to have the game in their grip after goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah before they depart for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mane capitalised on an error by Trevoh Chalobah to open the scoring in the ninth minute and Salah doubled the lead 17 minutes later when he ghosted past Marcos Alonso to lift the ball over goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from a tight angle.

But the Blues clawed their way back into the game in the 42nd minute when Mateo Kovacic majestically volleyed in off a post from the edge of the box after a punched clearance by Liverpool reserve keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Four minutes later, Chelsea were level when Christian Pulisic latched onto a pass by N'Golo Kante that beat Liverpool's offside trap and the American forward coolly lifted the ball over Kelleher into the net.

Both sides went close in the second half with Mendy and Kelleher pulling off good saves.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel will hold talks with Romelu Lukaku on Monday to discuss recent comments by the Belgian that were critical of the coach`s tactics and which cost the striker his place in Sunday`s 2-2 home draw with Liverpool.

Lukaku, signed from Inter Milan in the close season for a club-record 97.5 million pounds ($131.74 million), had told Sky Italy https://sport.sky.it/calciomercato/2021/12/30/lukaku-sky-intervista-speciale?itm_source=parsely-api he was unhappy with Tuchel`s system, adding he would like to return to Italy at some point in his career.

Tuchel declined to reveal what he would say to Lukaku in Monday`s meeting or whether the 28-year-old will be back in the side for Wednesday`s League Cup semi-final, first leg at home to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

"I cannot tell you what I want from a meeting that is happening behind closed doors tomorrow. I cannot speak out publicly and I will not," Tuchel told reporters.

The German said Lukaku had been dropped to avoid distracting the team from Sunday`s encounter with Liverpool.

"The noise was too big," Tuchel added. "It was too much noise, we lost totally the focus for the match and we took the decision to delay the decision."

The coach said deferring the discussion with Lukaku would "protect Romelu from a rash decision.

"We need to speak to him, we need to read the full interview and stay calm and not lose our head. He is our player and will stay our player. We will always protect our player.

"And when we make certain decisions like these, we need to evaluate the situation and not listen to the media or pressure but understand what he said, why he said (it) and this is the meeting tomorrow. From there we will take the decision."

Tuchel said Sunday`s draw with Liverpool had been "a brilliant game of football" and his side had been unlucky to find themselves two goals down before claiming a point.

"Coming back from 2-0 was immense," he said.

The draw meant Chelsea remained second on 43 points from 21 games, one point ahead of third-placed Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Leaders Manchester City have 53 points from 21.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will meet dropped Romelu Lukaku to discuss striker's comments

Romelu Lukaku was dropped from the Chelsea squad for a crucial Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday (January 2) and his future with the club looks uncertain.

The star striker was omitted by coach Thomas Tuchel after he revealed that he is unhappy at the club during his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

"Physically I am fine. But I'm not happy with the situation at Chelsea. Tuchel has chosen to play with another system," the Belgium international said in the interview with Sky Sports Italia.

"I won't give up, I'll be professional. I am not happy with the situation but I am professional - and I can't give up now," he added.

Not just that, the 28-year-old player admitted that he would like to return to Inter Milan in the near future. He said, "I really hope in the depths of my heart to return to Inter, not at the end of my career, but at a still good level to hopefully win more."

But what's next for Lukaku? Back to Inter as he mentioned also or another door of opportunity will open for him?

Uncertain Chelsea future: What's next for Romelu Lukaku after being dropped for Liverpool clash?

A stoppage-time goal from midfielder Rodri gave Premier League leaders Manchester City a 2-1 win at Arsenal on New Year's Day as the home side finished a thrilling encounter with 10 men following the sending-off of defender Gabriel.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta missed the game due to a positive COVID-19 test, but his side cast aside any lingering memories of their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of City in August as they pressed high up the pitch from the first whistle.

Their early pressure looked to have paid dividends when playmaker Martin Odegaard was upended in the box by goalkeeper Ederson, but neither the referee nor VAR deemed the challenge worth of a penalty.

The Gunners eventually took a deserved lead in the 31st minute when Bukayo Saka finished a sweeping move by rifling home Kieran Tierney's pass, and they closed out the first half without allowing City a single shot on target.

Seeking their 11th Premier League win in a row, City were not prepared to give up and they flipped the script in the second half to claw their way back into the game.

'CHAMPION PERSONALITY'

The visitors levelled from the spot through Riyad Mahrez early in the second half when Granit Xhaka was adjudged to have fouled Bernardo Silva in the box after a VAR review.

Gabriel Martinelli missed a glorious chance to put Arsenal back in the lead moments later before Gabriel was sent off for his second yellow card, picked up for a foul on Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal held their shape but they failed to deal with a high ball into the box in stoppage time and it fell to Rodri, who drilled it home to grab all three points with only their second effort on target in the game.

The win extends City's lead over Chelsea, who take on third-placed Liverpool on Sunday, to 11 points, while Arsenal are fourth on 35 points.

"They did a great game, but fortunately we saw our personality, our champion personality," goalscorer Rodri told broadcaster BT Sport.

Arsenal were annoyed that the incident involving Odegaard was not studied more closely by referee Stuart Attwell. In contrast, he reviewed the footage before awarding Manchester City their penalty.

"I don't know why the referee is told to see one and not the other. It is there for a reason, go and use it. It is the inconsistency, the whole point is to help the game out," said Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

A stoppage-time goal from midfielder Rodri gave Premier League leaders Manchester City a 2-1 win at Arsenal on New Year's Day as the home side finished a thrilling encounter with 10 men following the sending-off of defender Gabriel.

'CHAMPION PERSONALITY' The visitors levelled from the spot through Riyad Mahrez early in the second half when Granit Xhaka was adjudged to have fouled Bernardo Silva in the box after a VAR review. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to miss crucial Chelsea fixture due to suspected positive COVID-19 test

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes his side's crucial match against Chelsea will go ahead on Sunday despite three new coronavirus cases in his camp as another Premier League fixture was called off.

Klopp refused to name the players on Friday as they were awaiting test results but forward Roberto Firmino and goalkeeper Alisson Becker were absent from pictures released by Liverpool of a club training session.

Both sides will regard the match at Stamford Bridge as a must-win game as they seek to keep pace with defending champions Manchester City, who are eight points clear at the top.

"We have three new Covid cases in the team and a few more in the staff so it's not so cool at the moment," Klopp said at his pre-match press conference.

"I'm not able to say who it is because we have to do the whole process, get a proper PCR (test), but you will see the day after tomorrow on the team sheet -- it will be pretty clear who is affected or infected."

The German, whose side are third in the table, a point behind Chelsea, added: "We never had this proper outbreak where 15 to 20 players had it. For us it is every day, another one, stuff happens more and more often.

"It's like a lottery in the morning, waiting for the result. It is pretty much day-by-day, always one case, then another one.

"In this moment (we will) probably not (ask for a postponement) but we don't know how it will look in a few hours."

In addition to the three Covid cases, the injured Takumi Minamino and Thiago Alcantara will miss the trip to Chelsea.

Klopp's comments came as Southampton's Premier League match at home to Newcastle on Sunday was postponed due to Covid cases in the visitors' camp.

The game at St Mary's is the second in Premier League matchweek 21 to be postponed, following the announcement on Thursday that the New Year's Day clash between Leicester and Norwich was off.

Arteta absence

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he was frustrated to miss Saturday's match against City as he isolates following a second positive test.

"It will be very strange," said Arteta, whose team are fourth in the table. "I will need a big room so I can walk and move a little bit, because I won't be able to stand on my sofa."

The Spaniard, who also had coronavirus in March 2020, added: "It is a big, big game for us and it is a very frustrating thing to not be able to be there helping the team.

"But I will do my best from here, with everything that I can do, and we have prepared for every scenario possible and they know what we have to do."

Wolves boss Bruno Lage admitted even his players were unsure if they would be fit to face Manchester United on Monday after a virus outbreak forced the postponement of this week's trip to Arsenal.

"After 10 days without playing, in your mind, to be ready to play is difficult," said Lage. "Today I was talking with a player and I asked 'are you ready to play?'

"He said: 'I really don't know'. After 10 days without playing and training you are slow to take the right decisions."

Chelsea recorded a loss of 153.4 million pounds ($207.34 million) for the year ending June 30 2021, with the Premier League club saying that the COVID-19 pandemic had a "severe impact" on their ability to generate revenues.

Chelsea's turnover increased to 434.9 million pounds from 407.4 million the previous year after their Champions League triumph and due to amounts being carried forward from the extension of the 2019-20 season into the 2020-21 financial year.

Their matchday income fell to 7.7 million pounds from 54.5 million last year, while commercial revenue dropped from 170.4 million pounds last year to 153.6 million as most of the Premier League games were held behind closed doors due to COVID rules.

"Had it not been for the match-day impact of the pandemic, we are confident we would have achieved record turnover this year," chairman Bruce Buck said in a statement

"The strength, stability and long-term approach of our financial operation means our revenue streams remain strong, however COVID-19 will continue to have an impact going into the next financial year as our commercial operations resume normal activities."

Chelsea said the only revenue stream that has shown a year-on-year increase is broadcasting revenue which has jumped from 182.5 million pounds to 273.6 million.
