<p>Following the fire, the sacristy — a place for sacred objects has been meticulously renovated in anticipation of the cathedral's grand reopening in 2024.</p>

Notre Dame treasures shine at Louvre Museum exhibition

<p>Six airports across France were evacuated, on Wednesday (Oct 18), after the authorities received an email of "threats of attack", news agency AFP cited a police source as saying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is the latest threat in a spate of such incidents reported in the country.</p>

<p>The evacuations at Lille, Lyon, Nantes, Nice, Toulouse and Beauvais airports near the French capital Paris would allow authorities to "clear up any doubts" if the threats were real, the source said.</p>

<p>As per AFP reports, France's DGAC aviation authority spokesman also confirmed the evacuations made over the bomb threats at Lille, Lyon, Toulouse and Beauvais but did not give any further details immediately.</p>

<p>The DGAC's online dashboard displayed noteworthy delays at Lille, Lyon and Toulouse airports respectively.</p>

<p>Nice Airport also took to its official X account and shared a post saying that after "an abandoned baggage item... a security perimeter was set up to allow the usual checks. The situation has now returned to normal".</p>

<p>The French government denounced "unacceptable violence" on Saturday (September 23) that broke out at a protest headed by the hard left against police brutality, as officers were reported to be trapped inside the police vehicle after the attack, reported an AFP correspondent.<br />

The nationwide protest took place around three months after a youth was shot point-blank by a policeman at a traffic check outside Paris which sparked around week of rioting in the French capital city and elsewhere.<br />

Hundreds of people, who were wearing black hoods, walked out of the main march of many thousands of people in Paris. They then broke the windows of a bank branch and attacked a police car, which was stuck in traffic, with objects, said an AFP reporter.<br />

Paris police stated that the congregation of people attacked the police car with a crowbar and the vehicle was only released after an anti-riot police unit intervened.</p>

A police officer got out of the car and brandished the assailant's service weapon, but did not fire it back and sat inside the vehicle.<br />

"We see where anti-police hatred leads," wrote Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on X, formerly Twitter, as he denounced the "unacceptable violence" against the police.</p>

France to permit sale of fuel below cost to combat inflation

<p>On the same day Apple launched its flagship devices at its annual event in Cupertino, California, the French regulators ordered the company to halt sales of its older iPhone 12 models. Radiation watchdog ANFR&nbsp;demanded the halt saying the Apple devices emitted too much electromagnetic radiation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jean-Noel Barrot,&nbsp;France's junior minister for the digital economy told the newspaper Le Parisien that ANFR had&nbsp;carried&nbsp;out tests which showed the&nbsp;smartphone's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) to be slightly higher than what's legally allowed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The watchdog said&nbsp;accredited labs found absorption of electromagnetic energy by the body at 5.74 watts per kilogram during tests when the smartphone was being&nbsp;held in the hand or kept in a pocket. Interestingly, the European standard for the&nbsp;specific absorption rate is 4.0 watts per kilogram&nbsp;in such tests.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>As a result, ANFR says it "ordered Apple to remove the iPhone 12 from the French market from September 12".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Concerning phones already sold, Apple must in the briefest of delays take corrective measures to bring the affected phones into compliance. Otherwise, Apple will have to recall them," the watchdog added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starting Wednesday (September 13), the watchdog said its agents will be on the lookout, verifying if the company had halted the sale of devices or not.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Barrot said a software update would be sufficient to fix the radiation issues.</p>

<p>The letter was published on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by Yonathan Arfi, who is the president of the &nbsp;Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (CRIF). It is an umbrella organisation representing French Jews.</p>

<p>&nbsp;"This important decision honours Paris and the city's ongoing commitment against anti-Semitism," he wrote.</p>

<p>Abbas, 87, claimed Jews had been murdered in the Holocaust because of their "social role" and not religion, saying it was "not true" that "(Adolf) Hitler killed the Jews because they were Jews".</p>

<p>Echoing anti-Semitic tropes, he claimed Europeans "fought (the Jews) because of their social role, and not their religion. Because of usury and money".</p>

<p>His remarks came during a speech late last month in front of senior members of his Fatah party in the city of Ramallah. A video of the event surfaced this week.</p>

<p>A teenager lost his life late on Wednesday (September 7), after a collision between his motorbike and police vehicle west of Paris, said the police sources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 16-year-old is reportedly accused of failing to comply with police officers, said a police source, further adding that he was being "followed at a distance" by a police car through Elancourt, a town around 30 kilometres (almost 20 miles) outside Paris.</p>

<p>He banged into "another police vehicle" at an intersection, the source added, as per news agency AFP reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The collision between the vehicles took place at around 6:40 pm (1640 GMT), said a second police source, according to AFP.</p>

<p>Prosecutors said that initially, the teenager was revived from respiratory and cardiac arrest by first responders and brought to the hospital, but later, he succumbed to the injuries that he sustained in the crash.</p>

<p>The prosecutors further added that they were investigating the allegations levelled against the deceased by the police and also the involuntary homicide at the wheel.</p>

<p>They also said that two police officers were held in custody pending a manslaughter probe and were being interrogated.</p>

<p>As per AFP reports, extra police force was deployed in Elancourt, a town of 25,000 people, to thwart any probable unrest.</p>

<p>Government spokesman Olivier Veran said the investigations would determine the "exact circumstances" of Wednesday's collision.</p>

<p>"Obviously I am calling for calm.... I am calling for restraint and careful consideration," he said on France Inter radio.</p>

<p>"Regardless of how dramatic a situation is, it needs answers that we do not yet have."</p>

<p>Wednesday's incident came almost a month after a 17-year-old boy was shot by a police officer in the Paris suburb of Nanterre for fleeing a traffic check which triggered massive riots in the country.</p>

<p>A man was arrested on Thursday (August 17) after he jumped off Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower with a parachute on, said the monument's operator and the police.</p>

<p>The man, who as per news agency AFP was an experienced climber, entered the monument's perimeter shortly after 5.00 am (0300 GMT), well before its official opening.</p>

<p>According to the site's operator Sete, even though the guards immediately noticed the man, he was quick enough to get to the top of the tower before anyone could catch hold of him, carrying the parachute in a backpack.</p>

<p>The moment he got around the top of the 330-metre-high structure, he jumped.</p>

<p>Police said that the man landed in a nearby stadium where he was arrested for putting the lives of others in danger.</p>

<p>"This kind of irresponsible action puts people working at or below the tower in danger," Sete said in a statement.</p>

<p>Heavy rainfall in the French capital has dwindled Paris' plans on testing the readiness for swimmers to take a dip and participate in a race in the River Seine at next year's Summer Olympics.</p>

<p>On Friday (4 August), a training session, that was planned for swimmers who were aiming to take part in a race this weekend in the river, was called off due to the declining water quality which dropped below acceptable standards, said the international governing body of swimming announced.</p>

<p>That can most likely happen when rains cause overflows of untreated waste into the Seine.</p>

<p>The French government is set to spend around $1.6 billion on the Seine regeneration project.</p>

<p>According to the officials, the water-management projects will make the pollution issues caused by storms less frequent.</p>

<p>World Aquatics released a statement saying that after days of rains, “The water quality in the Seine has currently fallen below acceptable standards for safeguarding swimmers’ health,” as per AP reports.</p>

<p>It further said that a call on whether the Open Water Swimming World Cup, which was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, will follow more water-quality tests.</p>

<p>The competition, which will be among a raft of events, has been organised to test Paris’ Olympic plans.</p>

<p>Banned for almost 100 years due to filthy water, three Olympic and Paralympic events, triathlon, marathon swimming and Para-triathlon will take place in the river and by the year 2025, three open-air swimming areas will be accessible from the quayside.</p>

<p>The water quality of the river drastically declined in all these years due to industrial sewage and the sanitation demands of the growing population in the French capital.</p>

<p>The declining water quality affected the aquatic life to a point where in the 1960s only three species of fish were recorded in Paris.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Swimming in the Seine was banned in the year 1923.</p>

<h2><strong>Three swimming areas to open on the Seine</strong></h2>

<p>Over the last 20 years, the advancements that have been made have resulted in a sharp decline of faecal bacteria entering the river.</p>

<p>"But the difficulty has been in eradicating those last few percentage points to ensure it can be officially classified as clean," the BBC quoted Samuel Colin-Canivez, chief engineer for sanitation at Paris city hall as saying.</p>

<p>The government is now building a huge reservoir underground that will help in storing run-off in times of heavy rainfall.</p>

<p>"Up to now, the Seine has been the safety valve for the sewage system. If we didn't occasionally allow wastewater into the river, it would have backed up into people's homes," Colin-Canivez added.</p>

<p>"Now a tunnel will bring the overflow to the reservoir, where it can be stored for a day or two - the time for the system to settle down again. Then it will be drained as normal to the treatment centres," he further said.</p>
