The air hostess was identified as Maryam Raza, who landed in Canada's Toronto on PIA flight PK-782 from Islamabad on Monday. <p>The allegations against the jail authorities were also levelled by Mashal Yousafzai, a lawyer and a spokesperson for Bushra Bibi.</p>

<p>Yousafzai said a chemical substance was added to her food which led to the deterioration in health.</p>

<p>This development comes at a time when India is seeking Hafiz Saeed’s extradition from India, who is believed to be one of the main masterminds behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks.</p>

<p>On Hafiz Saeed, the MEA said, “We have conveyed a request, along with relevant supporting documents, to the government of Pakistan to extradite him to India to face trial in a particular case.’’</p>

<h2><strong>Pakistan&nbsp;denies requests, says no extradition treaty&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>As expected, Islamabad denied India’s request, citing the lack of any bilateral treaty governing such extraditions.</p>

<p>Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said, “Pakistan has received a request from the Indian authorities, seeking extradition of Hafiz Saeed in a so-called money laundering case.”</p>

Citing government data, a report by the Dawn on Monday (Jan 1) said, Pakistan saw 1,524 violence-related deaths and 1,463 injuries from 789 terror attacks and counter-terror operations, including nearly 1,000 deaths among civilians and security personnel. Overall deaths were at a record six-year high since 2017, a <strong><a href="https://crss.pk/pakistans-violence-related-fatalities-mark-a-record-6-year-high-56-surge-in-violence-recorded-in-2023-crss-annual-security-report/">report by the Center for the Research and Security Studies (CRSS)</a></strong> said on Sunday.</p>

<p>While in 2022, violence in the country had surged to&nbsp;56 per cent - an unprecedented escalation in the last 10 years. Militant attacks increased by six per cent. "Moreover, the country saw a surge in violence for the third consecutive year with an uptick recorded each year beginning from 2021," the report added.</p>

<h2><strong>Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan primary centres of violence</strong></h2>

<p>The CRSS report said that the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were primary centres of violence, accounting for more than 90 per cent of all deaths and 84 per cent of attacks. "Punjab and Sindh were relatively peaceful as together, both these provinces suffered only 8pc of all fatalities in 2023," the report said.</p>

<p>Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded the highest number of militant attacks and resultant deaths last year. Citing data from PICSS, the Dawn reported that there were 419 militant attacks in the province in which 620 people were killed and 977 others were injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Balochistan, meanwhile, faced at least 170 militant attacks in which 285 people were killed and 388&nbsp;were injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"65% of all violence-related fatalities recorded in 2023 resulted from terrorism, while the remaining 35% from the security forces operations against the outlaws," the report further said.</p>

<h2><strong>Who is behind the attacks?</strong></h2>

<p>According to the CRSS report,<strong>&nbsp;</strong>Pakistan reported 586 terror attacks this year, with only 17% of them claimed by the banned terror outfits such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Daish (Islamic State Khorasan) and others. Security forces carried out 197 operations against outlaws leaving 537-545 of them dead.</p>

<p>"The number of terrorist and insurgent attacks surpassed security operations against outlaws by almost three times, resulting in a higher number of casualties among both civilians and security personnel compared to the casualties among outlaws. In addition to three major types of violence – security operations, terror attacks, and insurgency – two other manifestations of violence stemming from political turmoil in the country have also contributed to casualties," the report said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The agency pointed out that one of the major causes of the escalation of fatalities of civilians and security personnel was suicide bombers. "There were 853 casualties from 31 suicide attacks (287 lost their lives while 566 were wounded)," it said.&nbsp;</p>

According to the CRSS report, Pakistan reported 586 terror attacks this year, with only 17% of them claimed by the banned terror outfits such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Daish (Islamic State Khorasan) and others. Security forces carried out 197 operations against outlaws leaving 537-545 of them dead. "The number of terrorist and insurgent attacks surpassed security operations against outlaws by almost three times, resulting in a higher number of casualties among both civilians and security personnel compared to the casualties among outlaws. In addition to three major types of violence – security operations, terror attacks, and insurgency – two other manifestations of violence stemming from political turmoil in the country have also contributed to casualties," the report said. The agency pointed out that one of the major causes of the escalation of fatalities of civilians and security personnel was suicide bombers. <p>Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) had intimated via a letter that Qureshi was part of the political party responsible for its involvement in "anti-state activities" and causing damage to public and private property.</p>

<p>He was detained due to his alleged role in civil unrest that erupted on May 9 after the arrest of ex-PM Imran Khan.</p>

<p>The development came as a big blow to Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Qureshi’s release could have significantly boosted PTI’s election campaign.</p>

<h2><strong>Imran and Qureshi received relief in the cipher case</strong></h2>

<p>Both Imran and Qureshi are currently locked up in Adiala jail, with the ex-PM always facing detentions in one case or another.</p>

<p>Pakistan’s top poll body, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) late Friday (Dec 15) issued the election schedule for the upcoming general polls to be held&nbsp;on February 8, 2024.</p>

<p>The schedule was released hours after a ruling from the country’s Supreme Court that quashed an observation from the Lahore High Court (LHC) which stated that bureaucrats can’t be appointed as returning officers (ROs) and district returning officers (DROs).</p>

<p>The apex court had also ordered the ECP to release the schedule as early as possible.</p>

<p>The polling process in the country will now start on December 19, when the returning officer (RO) will issue a public notice, while the ECP will also resume training for the ROs and district returning officers (DROs).</p>

<h2>Lahore High Court vs Supreme Court in Pakistan</h2>

<p>Earlier on Wednesday (Dec 13), while responding to a plea filed by ex-PM Imran Khan’s PTI party, the LHC had halted the appointments of bureaucrats to act as DROs and ROs for the upcoming general elections.</p>

<p>Subsequently, the ECP suspended a notification regarding the appointment of DROs, ROs, and AROs, that raised concerns over potential further delays in the election process, which is already running overdue by two months.</p>

<p>But on Friday (Dec 15), the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Esa summoned the Election Commission and discussed the situation following the high court’s decision.</p>

<p>Terrorists&nbsp;attacked a police station and army base in Pakistan's northwest on Tuesday (Dec 12), killing at least 25&nbsp;people and injuring&nbsp;others, reported AFP.</p>

<p>Earlier it was reported that three police officers were killed in the attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Many of them were killed while they were sleeping and in civilian clothes so we are still determining if they are all military personnel," an official was quoted as saying by AFP.</p>

<p>A suicide bomber carried out the attack along with other militants&nbsp;who&nbsp;stormed the compound&nbsp;in explosive-laden vehicles in the Draban area of Dera Ismail Khan district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to agency reports.</p>

<p>The terrorists also used bombs and guns in the attack, the reports said. Soon after the attack, troops were rushed to the scene to take control of the situation.</p>

<p>In a statement, the Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP), which has emerged recently, said its militants carried out the attack aimed at the Pakistani army, but the target was not verified by officials or the military.</p>

<p>The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Pakistan later released a detailed statement, which said a counter-operation led by the army resulted in the death of 27 terrorists.</p>

<p>"An intelligence-based operation was conducted in general area Darazinda on reported presence of terrorists. During the conduct of operation, terrorists' hideout was busted and seventeen terrorists were sent to hell," the ISPR said.</p>

<p>️"In another intelligence-based operation in general area Kulachi, own troops effectively engaged terrorists’ location as a result of which four terrorists were sent to hell," the statement added.</p>

<p>The statement added that an additional group of six terrorists tried to attack and take over a&nbsp;security forces' post in general area Daraban; however, the move was thwarted&nbsp;which forced the terrorists to ram an explosive-laden vehicle into the post, followed by a suicide bombing attack.</p>

<p>"The resulting blasts led to the collapse of the building, causing multiple causalities; twenty-three brave soldiers embraced shahadat (martyrdom), while all six terrorists were effectively engaged and sent to hell."</p>
