A policeman was killed and three others were injured in an explosion on Sunday while escorting a convoy of foreign dignitaries on Malam Jabba Road in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the police, as reported by Dawn.

Pakistan grapples with a disturbing trend as there are estimated 50-55 suicides every day, with 70% of victims being young people between the age of 15 and 29 years.&nbsp;

Mental health experts warn that suicide has become the fourth leading cause of death among this age group.

The experts quoting the World Health Organisation (WHO), said 19,331 suicidal deaths were reported in 2019 in Pakistan, of which 14,771 were males and 4,560 were females.

“Academic pressure, family disputes, and lack of economic opportunities, highlighting the cumulative stress young people face. Cyber bullying, excessive social media use, and substance abuse are to blame for,” said Dr. Syed Usman Hamdani, Founding Director, Global Institute of Human Development-Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University (GIHD-STMU, during a debate.

The debate titled “Mapping Youth Mental Health Landscapes: Insights from Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia and Vietnam,” was organised by the GIHD-STMU at Shifa College of Medicine.

Experts said that in low and middle-income countries like Pakistan, up to 90% of young people’s mental health needs are unmet due to a lack of resources.

According to the mental health landscape analysis conducted in Pakistan, stress, anxiety, depression, drug abuse, suicidal ideations, aggression, hopelessness, helplessness, and lack of confidence are some of the most pressing mental health issues faced by the youth in Pakistan.

Former SAPM Dr. Zafar Mirza said, “Pakistan in addition to political and economic crisis, questioning how youth could be mentally healthy when 40% of children are malnourished and stunted, while millions of children are facing social media crisis.”

Dr. Abdul Wahab Yousafzai, head of psychiatry at Shifa International Hospital, said in Malakand division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone, over 1,600 people died by suicide between 2018 and 2021.

“As per my research, around 340 people committed suicide in first quarter of 2018 in Malakand division, while in Chitral, 700 people died by suicide in three years. Mostly were adolescents who ended their lives,” Prof. Yousafzai added.

Mental health experts from Indonesia, Egypt, and Vietnam shed light on the challenges faced by young people, alongside efforts undertaken by public and private institutions to address these concerns and improve mental health support systems.

She experienced heart failure and was placed on ECMO, a type of life support for persons suffering from a life-threatening disease or accident that impairs the function of their heart or lungs. Government prosecutor Mohazib Awais stated that Aasiya Bibi, a woman arrested in 2021, faced blasphemy charges following accusations from residents that she had burned pages of the Quran, leading to her arrest. 
Awais said the judge announced the verdict Wednesday (March 20) in the eastern city of Lahore. He said Bibi, who has the right to appeal, had denied the charge during her trial.

It may be mentioned here, a Christian woman with the same name was acquitted of blasphemy in 2019 after she spent eight years on death row in Pakistan. Later, she moved to Canada to escape death threats from Islamic extremists upon her release.

Awais said the judge announced the verdict Wednesday (March 20) in the eastern city of Lahore. He said Bibi, who has the right to appeal, had denied the charge during her trial. It may be mentioned here, a Christian woman with the same name was acquitted of blasphemy in 2019 after she spent eight years on death row in Pakistan. Later, she moved to Canada to escape death threats from Islamic extremists upon her release. Wednesday’s case involved a different woman. Ex-Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has reportedly backed Pashtun-khwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the opposition’s presidential candidate against Asif Ali Zardari, the joint candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP).

Both PML-N and PPP have agreed to form a coalition government in the centre. The decision to nominate 75-year-old Achakzai as presidential candidate was taken by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), backed by Khan.

Achakzai emerged victorious from the NA-266 constituency in Balochistan's Kila Abdullah-cum-Chaman in the recently held general elections, marred with irregularities and allegations of rigging by the opposition parties.

It must be noted that all Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed candidates, who were barred from using the electoral symbol 'bat' and contesting under the PTI banner on February 8, have now joined SIC.

On Saturday (Mar 2), nomination papers for both candidates were filed before Islamabad High Court (IHC)&nbsp;Chief Justice Aamer Farooq - the presiding officer for the presidential polls. Farooq H. Naik and Saleem Mandviwala filed Zardari's papers while PTI leaders Sardar Latif Khosa and Omar Ayub Khan filed the papers for Achakzai before Chief Justice Aamer Farooq.&nbsp;

<h2>Imran Khan’s appeal</h2>

According to local media reports, Imran Khan, who remains locked up in Rawalpindi's Adiala jail, has urged PTI’s lawmakers to support Achakzai in the upcoming presidential elections, slated to take place on March 9. A notification regarding the same was issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday (Mar 1).

Under Pakistani law, the president is elected by members of the National Assembly, Senate and four provincial assemblies.

Generally, Chief Justices of the High Courts act as the presiding officers for presidential elections. Justice Amer Farooq has assumed the role of presiding officer for the upcoming election.

Earlier this week, a meeting took place between a PTI delegation, led by party leader Asad Qaiser and Achakzai and Balochistan National Party (Mengal) chief Akhtar Mengal. The two sides had met to formulate a strategy to voice their resentment against ‘rigging’ in the general elections.

Asif Ali Zardari was unanimously declared the joint candidate by PML-N and PPP after they announced their coalition as none of them managed to reach the majority mark on their own.
