Multiple passengers have been disembarked from flights by immigration staff at airports to curb the rising numbers of Pakistani nationals being involved in begging in Middle Eastern countries, according to a report by Dawn.

Multiple passengers have been disembarked from flights by immigration staff at airports to curb the rising numbers of Pakistani nationals being involved in begging in Middle Eastern countries, according to a report by Dawn. There's growing dissatisfaction in Middle Eastern countries about the increased number of Pakistani beggars, which has prompted authorities in Pakistan to use enhanced screening methods for passengers travelling to those countries, a senior Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) official told Dawn. As per the report, these people disguise themselves as tourists to reach countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Iran, Oman, and Turkiye. Also read: Statue depicting Pakistan Army’s 1971 surrender to India vandalised in Bangladesh Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis was told that around 90 per cent of the beggars arrested abroad were Pakistani nationals. The increasing number of Pakistani beggars overseas is raising concerns among government officials. The Interior Ministry of Pakistan has allegedly disembarked 44,000 people over similar suspicions in less than three years, according to the report. Groups of individuals, often posing as religious tourists, primarily come from districts in South Punjab and use Multan airport for travel, FIA sources told Dawn. In addition to the strict actions by Pakistani authorities, UAE officials are also enforcing stringent measures. According to travel agents, they are denying visas to Pakistanis who cannot demonstrate sufficient funds in their accounts to prove they are “genuine visitors.” Also read: Afghanistan's Taliban rulers score diplomatic wins, consolidate power Multiple foreign embassies, particularly from Western and African countries, handle their visa services for Pakistan through the UAE. Travel agents are concerned that stricter scrutiny could impact travellers needing to visit these countries, as they must attend interviews in the UAE. Although the authorities have taken measures on their part, they have also requested that Middle Eastern and Gulf nations enforce stricter visa policies. A senior FIA officer said that these countries should review their visa processing systems instead of solely urging Pakistani authorities to prevent potential beggars, criminals, and illegal immigrants. The FIA official mentioned that these nations should ask for bank statements, property records, and tax documents with visa applications to confirm that travellers can financially support themselves during their stay like Western countries do. “Academic pressure, family disputes, and lack of economic opportunities, highlighting the cumulative stress young people face. Cyber bullying, excessive social media use, and substance abuse are to blame for,” said Dr. Syed Usman Hamdani, Founding Director, Global Institute of Human Development-Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University (GIHD-STMU, during a debate.

The debate titled “Mapping Youth Mental Health Landscapes: Insights from Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia and Vietnam,” was organised by the GIHD-STMU at Shifa College of Medicine.

According to the mental health landscape analysis conducted in Pakistan, stress, anxiety, depression, drug abuse, suicidal ideations, aggression, hopelessness, helplessness, and lack of confidence are some of the most pressing mental health issues faced by the youth in Pakistan.

Pakistan grapples with a disturbing trend as there are estimated 50-55 suicides every day, with 70% of victims being young people between the age of 15 and 29 years. Mental health experts warn that suicide has become the fourth leading cause of death among this age group. The experts quoting the World Health Organisation (WHO), said 19,331 suicidal deaths were reported in 2019 in Pakistan, of which 14,771 were males and 4,560 were females. The Pakistan Peoples Party has not yet decided on whether to go ahead and join the Federal Cabinet or not, party insiders have revealed. They also maintain that there is a lot of pressure from both, within the party leadership and government allies to join the government. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who recently met Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was offered and rather insisted upon to join the federal government formally, at the earliest. Bilawal, who has in the past maintained a position consequent to the decision by his party’s Central Executive Committee(CEC) to not join the federal cabinet, had reportedly avoided an affirmative answer, a party leader on the condition of anonymity said. “Shehbaz Sharif is elder to Bilawal Bhutto, its not in our culture or tradition to misbehave with the elders the reason Mr Bilawal avoided a commitment or a comment when he was offered by the Prime Minister, what else would he had done, he couldn’t go on to fight”. Watch: Saudi Crown Prince likely to visit Pakistan in his third in-person meet between Pak PM & MBS × The meeting was said to be held in a very positive and constructive environment where Bilawal was asked to join as the Foreign Minister. The Prime Minister insisted that PPP join the Federal Cabinet, preferably before the budget is presented, which is due to be laid before the parliament in the first week of June. It is pertinent to mention that in the past, Bilawal Bhutto and his party have declined the offer to be the Prime Minister in the run-up to the government formation, following the February 8 General Elections in Pakistan. Also read: Exclusive: Saudi Crown Prince likely to visit Pakistan in second week of May His party said that they took a principled position on the matter and that it would support the PMLN-led government on issue-to-issue basis. Party leaders insisted that while there is no decision, the PPP chairman remains under immense pressure from the government and his own party leaders to review the party’s stance and rather join the government and that the decision of the party’s CEC should be reviewed by convening another CEC meet given the circumstances. No meeting of the Central Executive Committee of the Pakistan Peoples Party(PPP) has been called as yet.

A young woman from Karachi, Pakistan, and her family were given a new life through an Indian heart, following a transplant procedure at Chennai's MGM Healthcare. The doctors and hospital did the treatment for free, thanks to the city-based Aishwaryan Trust, news channel NDTV reported. Ayesha Rashan, the transplant recipient, is 19 years old and was admitted with severe heart dysfunction. Her family stated that they could not have funded the procedure without the trust's and Chennai physicians' assistance. "I feel good after the transplant," Rashan told NDTV. The recipient's mother expressed gratitude to the doctors, hospital, and medical trust. Rashan's condition is stable, and she can go back to Pakistan. She experienced heart failure and was placed on ECMO, a type of life support for persons suffering from a life-threatening disease or accident that impairs the function of their heart or lungs. But that did not help because her heart pump developed a leak in a valve, needing a complete heart transplant. Also read: Are men weaker than women according to medical science? Experts break it down The cost of a heart transplant can go over ₹3.5 million, which would have been hard for her family to cover but Rashan's fee was covered by both doctors and the trust. Dr KR Balakrishnan, Director (Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant), and Dr Suresh Rao, Co-Director (Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant) told NDTV that Rashan received the heart swiftly because there were no competing claims; otherwise, a foreigner cannot obtain an organ. Currently, Tamil Nadu is the leading state in India in terms of organ donation and transplantation, due to proactive steps implemented decades ago. Additionally, the physicians appealed to the government for a better policy, citing reports from other states that multiple viable donated organs were being discarded due to the excessive cost of the transplant. Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Pakistan PM Imran Khan, has allegedly fallen sick after consuming ‘poisoned’ food given by jail authorities. Currently, she is locked up in the Adiala jail where she is serving imprisonment in two separate cases. Bushra Bibi's sister, Maryamn Riaz Wattoo, claimed before the media that her life was in danger in jail.
