According to the United Nations World Fertility Report 2024, Pakistan&rsquo;s fertility rate has significantly declined over the past three decades, dropping from six live births per woman in 1994 to 3.6 in 2024.
In spite of this downward trend, the country is still on track to become the third most populous nation by 2050, overtaking the United States, Indonesia, Brazil, and Russia. Pakistan&rsquo;s population, which stood at 31 million when it gained independence in 1947, had risen to 241 million by the 2023 census.

The UN projects that Pakistan&rsquo;s population will exceed 380 million by 2050. Meanwhile, the fertility rate is expected to decline further, reaching 2.5 by 2054.
The report also pointed out that Pakistan, along with Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, will contribute to 43 per cent of the world&rsquo;s births in 2024.
&ldquo;Three other country examples &hellip; had fertility levels still above six live births per woman in 1994, declining by 2024 to 3.6 in Pakistan, 3.9 in Ethiopia and 4.4 in Nigeria,&rdquo; the report said. It also forecasts a continued decline in fertility rates globally, although countries like Pakistan will maintain levels above replacement rates.

"Reducing growth in the numbers of live births in the future would allow governments and families to allocate resources more efficiently to invest in children and adolescent health and well-being," the report said.
Additionally, the UN has called for measures such as ending child marriages, improving access to sexual and reproductive healthcare, and enhancing maternal care for young mothers. "Governments should also strengthen laws and enforcement mechanisms to protect the rights of girls and women," the report added.

Pakistan has been trying to address population growth with family planning initiatives, distribution of contraceptives, and education campaigns in rural areas.

An FIR has surfaced 13 hours after Matiullah Jan went missing and what his family defines as abduction. The FIR by Islamabad police maintains that Matiullah Jan was under the influence of drugs when he rammed into a police barrier, snatched the gun from the policeman on duty and pointed the gun at him.

Matiullah’s Family maintains that Matiullah went missing from the parking of PIMS hospital in Islamabad on November 27 at around 11 pm just before midnight. It is also pertinent to mention that for someone who has been alleged to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the claimed attack, Matiullah Jan does not even smokes, he has been a strong opponent of the use of any sort of drugs or tobacco.

Mati’s son in a video statement confirmed that his father had gone missing from the parking of PIMS in Islamabad alongside another journalist just before midnight on November 27. The other journalist, Saqib Bashir, also a court reporter for a prominent Pakistani TV network was later released in one of the farther sectors of Islamabad.

Saqib could not describe the event much saying that both were blindfolded.

Meanwhile, sources in Islamabad police said that Matiullah was at Margalla police station but refused to divulge details of the charges and case against him.

Lawyers of Matiullah Jan, Imaan Mazari and Abdul Hadi Chatta said that “after quite a lot of back and forth and struggle, we did manage to get inside the Margalla police station to see our client but he was taken away from the police station before we could see him”.

Matiullah is likely to be presented before an Anti Terrorism Court later today on charges that are&nbsp; unknown yet.

Matiullah had been reporting from the ground on PTI’s protest and the reported use of excessive force. He had also been&nbsp;investigating the claims of deaths of PTI supporters&nbsp;as a result of the violence that ensued during clashes between protesters and the law enforcement agencies.

That order from Islamabad High Court had cited the visit of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and a new public order law as the reasons for disallowing mass gatherings over the weekend. But PTI held protests in different parts of the world and, on Monday, started a march to Islamabad from the outskirts of the capital.

Ahead of the protest, Bushra Bibi said, "This is not just about my husband; it is about this country and its leader."

Addressing PTI workers at a rally from atop a container placed by security forces to prevent the protests, Bibi vowed to fight for Khan's release 'until her last breath'.

"Until Imran Khan is with us, we will not end this protest. I will remain here until my last breath, and I ask all of you to stand by us. This isn’t just about my husband. It’s about the future of our country and the leadership we deserve," The Express Tribune quoted her as saying.

Bushra's political baptism by fire came at the end of a series of court cases and imprisonment. Earlier&nbsp;having carefully avoided the spotlight, she was thrust into action as Khan, ousted in a no-trust motion in 2022 that followed an election which brought PML-N back to power, continues to languish in jail.

In the latest, Bushra and Khan were booked for terrorism in connection with the protest held on November 24.

<h2>Who is Bushra Bibi?</h2>

Described as a spirtual guide, faith healer, and 'witch' depending on where you look at for info on her, Bushra Bibi is the third wife of cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan, after Britain's Jemima Goldsmith and Pakistani journalist Reham Khan.&nbsp;

Around 50 years of age, she was known earlier as Bushra Maneka, having been married into a prominent Pakistani political family before meeting Khan.

Soon after their marriage, stories circulated in local Pakistani media about her mystical powers.

Bushra had already made a name for herself as a faith healer and spiritual adviser.

At the time, it was said that marrying her brought Khan good fortunes.

It was even reported that Bushra, who was still married to her first husband, saw a dream that Khan could become Pakistan PM only if she married him. In a rare, and till then the only TV interview in October 2018, she dismissed this as bunkum.

Just six months into the marriage in a very low-key ceremony, Khan was catapulted to the top position, but it had been a rough ride for the couple since then.

After a flurry of court cases that followed his ouster, Khan and Bushra were sent to jail in a corruption case linked to 'toshakhana' or state gifts. They were also fined $2 million each.

Bushra is reported to be a follower of Sufism and was a mother of five when she met Khan at a Sufi shrine.

Bushra is also being pursued in court by her ex-husband Khawar Maneka.

Son of a former minister in Benazir Bhutto's cabinet, Maneka made the infamous "fraudulent marriage and fornication" complaint against Bushra with whom he was married for 28 years. While the fornication claim was rejected, the court case continued on fraudulant marriage complaint, as Muslim women cannot remarry for a few months after their husband's demise or in case of divorce. Maneka's case alleges that she did not follow the observance of this period.

Bushra and Khan were entangled in a flurry of legal cases since his ouster, estimated to number around 200.

Born into an influential family in Pakistan's Punjab province, Bushra is a follower of sufi mystic poet Baba Farid. 
 
She married Maneka in 1989, and got&nbsp;divorced in 2017. She has three daughters and two sons from that marriage.

The operations come a day after Pakistan witnessed one of the deadliest attacks on its soil this year. Militants launched a gun attack on passenger vans in KP’s Lower Kurram area, killing at least 42 people and injuring 30 others. The convoy of more than 200 vehicles was moving from Parachinar to Peshawar when it came under heavy gunfire.

Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement said Friday that the IBOs were launched in Bannu District in the early hours of November 22 on the “reported presence of khwarij”.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Wednesday (Nov. 20) granted bail to imprisoned former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in the Toshakhana-II case.

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb green-lighted the bail and ordered Khan’s immediate release on surety bonds of one million Pakistani rupees ($3,600).

Imran and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were arrested in the case on July 13 after the couple was granted bail in a separate Iddat case the same day.

Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Friday approached the Supreme Court and sought the constitution of a judicial commission to probe alleged suppression and targeting of workers of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party by state authorities in collusion with “unknown persons”.

Headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and consisting of two senior judges Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar, the judicial commission should look into political and non-political interference in the functioning of state authorities and the violation of the oaths taken under the Constitution by the functionaries, said the petition filed by PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja.

The petition asked the apex court to issue orders to ensure the protection of the fundamental rights of citizens, including the rights to life, freedom of assembly, expression, movement, information and fair judicial redress as guaranteed by the Constitution.

The petition also sought a direction from the Supreme Court against the denial of the no-objection certificate (NOC) for holding the upcoming political gatherings by the PTI, preferably on November 24.

At least 16 people were killed and one woman was injured Tuesday when a bus carrying wedding guests fell into the Indus river in Pakistan's mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan region, police said.

The incident took place at the Diamer district. The bus was travelling from Astore to Punjab's Chakwal district when it fell from the Telchi bridge into the river, the Dawn newspaper reported.

Diamer Senior Superintendent of Police Sher Khan confirmed that 16 bodies have been recovered, with search efforts ongoing for the remaining victims.

“Sixteen dead bodies have been recovered from the river, while the search for the remaining persons continues,” Khan was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

He added that a woman, who was the bride, sustained injuries and was receiving treatment at a hospital.

However, rescue officials said that 22 people drowned, while one person was saved.

Sharing details of the accident earlier, Rescue 1122 spokesperson Shaukat Riaz said the bus coming from Astore fell into the Indus River from Telchi bridge in the limits of Diamer district in the afternoon.

“The vehicle was part of a wedding procession heading towards Punjab's Chakwal district,” he said.

He said the passengers who were on board the bus have been identified.

Pakistan has seen an increase in militancy since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021, with Islamabad claiming hostile groups are now using the neighbouring country for shelter.

"Among the five injured personnel, the condition of three is critical, and they have been transferred to a local military hospital," the police officer said.

Pakistan criticised the move by US lawmakers to urge President Joe Biden to press Islamabad for the release of Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister on Thursday (October 25). Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stated the action was “contrary to inter-state conduct and diplomatic norms.”

Speaking at her regular press briefing, Baloch addressed questions about a recent letter from Democratic members of the US House of Representatives to President Biden, which called for his intervention in Pakistani politics. Over 60 Congress members requested that the US leverage its influence with Pakistan to facilitate Khan’s release from prison.

"Pakistan values its bilateral relations with the United States. We believe in constructive dialogue and engagement to address any concern," Baloch said, adding, "However, comments on Pakistan's domestic affairs are contrary to inter-state conduct and diplomatic norms. We believe such letters and statements are counter-productive and not in line with positive dynamics of Pakistan-US bilateral relations."

Imran Khan has been in detention since August last year, following his conviction in the Toshakhana criminal case and other cases as Pakistan approaches its February 8 elections—a conviction he contests.

In their letter, the Democratic lawmakers urged Biden to focus on human rights as part of US policy towards Pakistan. They wrote, "We write today to urge you to use the United States' substantial leverage with Pakistan's government to secure the release of political prisoners including former Prime Minister Khan and curtail widespread human rights abuses."

They also appealed for US embassy officials to visit Khan, who is currently held at Adiala Jail.
