Controversy erupts over Pakistan's first Miss Universe contestant Erica Robin. Here's why

<p>Pakistan's new Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa ruled on Wednesday (Oct 11) that the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Act 2023, a law that was enacted by the Pakistan Parliament to regulate the CJI's powers, is constitutional.</p>

<p>It was a big upset for petitioners who opposed the law, deeming it an attempt by the government to decrease the authority and powers of Pakistan's chief justice.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While backing both legislative and judiciary arms, he asked, "Why do we see each other's institutions negatively? Why can't it be said that one institution legislated for the betterment of another?"&nbsp;</p>

<p>The law was sustained with a majority vote of 10-5.</p>

<p>Delivering the verdict, Pakistan's recently sworn-in CJI said, “Subject to paragraphs 2 and 3 below by a majority of 10-5 (Justice Ahsan, Justice Akhtar, Justice Naqvi, Justice Ayesha and Justice Shahid Wahid dissenting), the SC Practice and Procedure Act 2023 is sustained as being in accordance with the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and to this extent, the petitions are dismissed."</p>

World Cup Cricket: Pakistani presenter Zainab Abbas deported after anti-India posts surface: Reports

World Champions England face Bangladesh in their second match of the 2023 ODI World Cup. England began their title defence with a drubbing at the hands of New Zealand and will once again be without all-rounder Ben Stokes. England haven't quite hit the panic button but need to get back on track against the Tigers. 1996 World Cup winning-coach Dav Whatmore sets up the clash on Wion World of Cricket.

Can England bounce back after opening loss?

The outfield at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala has come in for much criticism. England Captain Jos Buttler has termed it poor and questioned if the integrity of the game is being compromised. The ICC rated the outfield as average after Saturday's Bangladesh-Afghanistan game but the body says its on-ground officials have no problems with the surface for Tuesday's game. Buttler termed the outfield as poor but Sri Lanka have no such issues and have backed the ICC"s decision to play on. WION's Cricket pundit and 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore weighs in on the controversy on WION World of Cricket with Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

Pakistan bowled out for 286 against Netherlands in Hyderabad

<p>Netherlands shocked Pakistan in the second game of the ODI World Cup 2023 as they claimed three early wickets in Hyderabad on October 6 after electing to field first. The Men in Green, however, dug deep afterwards with a partnership of 120 runs for the fourth wicket between Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The partnership was broken by Aryan Dutt in the 29th over when he sent back Saud Shakeel for a personal score of 68 and the team total of 158. Dutchman Bas de Leede then took wickets in the same over - a brilliant bowled to dismiss Rizwan (68) and getting Iftikhar Ahmed (9) out caught behind. The twin strikes undid all the work done by Rizwan and Shakeel, leaving Pak six down for less than 200 and 18 overs to go. Have a look at the wicket here:</p>

Netherlands shocked Pakistan in the second game of the ODI World Cup 2023 as they claimed three early wickets in Hyderabad on October 6 after electing to field first. The Men in Green, however, dug deep afterwards with a partnership of 120 runs for the fourth wicket between Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel. The partnership was broken by Aryan Dutt in the 29th over when he sent back Saud Shakeel for a personal score of 68 and the team total of 158. Have a look at the wicket here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × The Pak innings was then given some support by Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan who added 64 runs for the seventh wicket. de Leede once again came to the fore as he clean bowled Khan (32) before trapping Hasan Ali LBW on the very next ball. These twin strikes came in 44th over with Pakistan eight down for 252. China vying to control Pakistani media with the help of proposed 'nerve centre': US report

<p>The Pakistan government on Tuesday (Oct 3) announced a 10 per cent processing fee on items imported under the Afghan transit trade agreement in order to evade smuggling and ensure proper taxation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The government said that the latest measure has been taken over suspicion that certain goods are illegally rerouted back into Pakistan even though they are destined for Afghanistan.</p>

<p>The notification states that 17 types of cloth were banned from passing through the Afghan transit trade and all types of tyres were banned.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the notification, the shipment of three types of tea through the Afghan transit trade has also been banned, and also dry fruits, almonds and fresh fruits.&nbsp;</p>

The Pakistan government on Tuesday (Oct 3) announced a 10 per cent processing fee on items imported under the Afghan transit trade agreement in order to evade smuggling and ensure proper taxation. Amid the growing chasm between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the announcement becomes significant as it aims to curb the illegal entry of goods into the country. The government said that the latest measure has been taken over suspicion that certain goods are illegally rerouted back into Pakistan even though they are destined for Afghanistan. Also read: China vying to control Pakistani media with the help of proposed 'nerve centre' The caretaker government has also banned 212 items of Afghan transit trade, with the Ministry of Commerce issuing a notification for the same, Bol News reported. The notification states that 17 types of cloth were banned from passing through the Afghan transit trade and all types of tyres were banned. As per the notification, the shipment of three types of tea through the Afghan transit trade has also been banned, and also dry fruits, almonds and fresh fruits. All types of cosmetics and dozens of items used as toiletries have been banned. The notification further states the ban on refrigerators, air conditioners, juicers, mixers, blenders, flasks, and others. Also read: Who is Mahbouba Seraj? Afghan woman activist nominated for Nobel Peace Prize A report by DAWN mentioned that the Customs Department notification (SRO1381 of 2023) noted that the fee, calculated as 10 per cent ad valorem based on the original value of goods, must be paid in advance during the declaration process for Afghan transit commercial goods entering Afghanistan via Pakistan. Notable, the goods declarations filed before Oct 3 will not be subject to these new provisions, according to the notification. As quoted by DAWN, an official said that the cargo volume has surged recently. "Despite Afghanistan's transit trade demand being $1bn to $2bn per year, we have observed a significant rise. This fee is expected to deter those involved in illicit trading," the official said.
