Following a series of diplomatic escalations against Pakistan post the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 27 civilians, the Indian Navy has deployed its first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, near the Karwar coast in the Arabian Sea.
This deployment, evokes memories of one of the most decisive maritime episodes in the subcontinent’s history—the sinking of PNS Ghazi in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war.

1971: The battle beneath the waves

During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, Pakistan launched a covert operation to eliminate India’s pride, the aircraft carrier called INS Vikrant. The Indian aircraft carrier, at the time was under repair and maintainance. The Pakistani Navy dispatched its most advanced submarine, a US-leased, PNS Ghazi, with a dual mission: to destroy Vikrant and establish dominance in the Bay of Bengal.
While Pakistan believed INS Vikrant to be anchored off Visakhapatnam, the carrier had been secretly redeployed to the Andaman Islands, away from harm. In its place, the Indian Navy had dispatched its INS Rajput, an ageing yet tactically capable destroyer, to patrol this coastline.

The sinking of PNS Ghazi

On the night of 3 December 1971, INS Rajput detected an unusual underwater activity near the Visakhapatnam harbour. Depth charges were deployed in suspected zones and within hours a massive underwater explosion was recorded. The following morning, wreckage of PNS Ghazi was found drifting and scattered near the harbour entrance.
Pakistani military, however, maintained that an accidental internal explosion was the cause, Indian naval accounts and subsequent analysis credited INS Rajput with neutralising the threat through deliberate action.

History echoes in 2025

Today, as ceasefire violations escalate and the spectre of cross-border conflict looms once more, the Indian Navy has mindfully deployed the latest INS Vikrant in the Arabian Sea. Though officially unlinked, its presence is a subtle message: India remains vigilant and ready to defend its sovereignty at sea.

Instead of denouncing the brutal terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, carried out by terrorists backed by Pakistan or acknowledging responsibility, Pakistan’s former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari delivered a provocative speech, threatening India with violence over the suspension of Indus Waters Treaty.

As tensions between India and Pakistan escalate following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, both nations have taken drastic measures. India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, prompting Pakistan to nullify the 1972 Shimla Agreement, signed after the 1971 war. With Pakistan breaching the Line of Control (LOC) ceasefire on Thursday, revisiting the 1971 war underlines India’s military prowess and its historical significance.
Spanning just 13 days, it culminated in the creation of a new nation, Bangladesh.

1. The Trigger

The seeds of the war were sown in, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), where a brutal crackdown by the Pakistani military on the Bengali population led to widespread atrocities. Operation Searchlight, launched on March 25, 1971, resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands and spurring the nationalist sentiment in the region.
As the crisis led to a burgeoning refugee problem in West Bengal and Assam on the Indian side, the Indira Gandhi government decided to support the resistance movement.

2. Formation and Support of Mukti Bahini

Indian intelligence and military agencies trained and armed Mukti Bahini, allowing them to launch guerrilla attacks that softened Pakistani positions in the east. This proxy phase of the war destabilised Pakistani control and set the stage for India’s formal military intervention.

3. Swift and Decisive Military Campaign

India launched a full-scale military offensive officially on December 3, 1971, in response to pre-emptive Pakistani airstrikes on Indian airbases. What followed was a meticulously coordinated three-pronged attack on East Pakistan from the north, west, and east, led by Indian Army generals like Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora. In less than two weeks, Indian forces had surrounded Dhaka, Pakistan's eastern capital. The Indian Navy simultaneously blockaded Pakistani ports and the Indian Air Force established air superiority.

4. Historic Surrender: The Fall of Dhaka

On December 16, 1971, Lt. Gen. A.A.K. Niazi, the commander of Pakistan’s Eastern Command, surrendered to Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora of the Indian Army in Dhaka. In one of the most iconic moments in military history, 93,000 Pakistani soldiers laid down their arms, making it the largest surrender since World War II. The formal signing of the Instrument of surrender marked the birth of Bangladesh and a humiliating defeat for Pakistan, both militarily and politically.

5. Naval and Air Dominance, with INS Vikrant and INS Rajput

The Indian Navy, led by INS Vikrant, blockaded East Pakistan, launching over 300 airstrikes on Chittagong and Khulna, crippling supply lines. INS Rajput sank PNS Ghazi off Visakhapatnam, protecting Vikrant by acting as a decoy. The Indian Air Force grounded Pakistan’s number 14 squadron, while operations like the Karachi harbour bombing ensured India’s control.

The Simla Agreement (1972)

After the war, India and Pakistan signed the Simla Agreement on July 2, 1972, in the hill town of Shimla. A year later, on July 2, 1972, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistani President Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto signed the Simla Agreement. An official copy of the agreement published by the Ministry of External Affairs said that it sought to reverse the consequences of the 1971 war. The pact was aimed at restoring peace and normalising relations.

A day after India’s measures against Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan announced on Thursday it would hold all bilateral agreements, including the Simla Agreement, in abeyance. The agreement signed after the 1917 war was a significant breakthrough

The Pahalgam terror attack has led to dark clouds not just over India-Pakistan cross-border relations but also on the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 proceedings. After a horrifying terrorist attack in India’s ‘Mini Switzerland’ that killed at least 27 innocent people, India and Pakistan took dire steps to cut down any ties between them. It reached the cricket arena with uncertainties looming over PSL 2025 after reports suggested that the PCB has decided to deport a dozen key Indian broadcasters for the tournament.
After India’s robust response to the deadliest attack on its soil since the 2019 Pulwama bombing that killed 40 CRPF personnel, Pakistan retaliated, immediately suspending the roles of around a dozen Indian broadcasters in their premier T20 tournament underway in the country.

Per the latest reports, the Pakistan Government directed its cricket board to send back any Indian national working on PSL’s broadcast production. Following the orders, at least 12 Indian working nationals aligned with a foreign production company handling the tournament’s live telecast would leave the country sooner.
The decision, however, could hamper PSL’s broadcast proceedings with several matches left in this edition. This move could disrupt the league’s broadcast operations as the Indian crew, asked to leave, was a key part of their production setup contracted through a third-party international company.
Besides, the National Security Council of Pakistan has announced that all Indian passport holders shall leave the country within the next 48 hours. Also, FanCode, India’s streaming platform for PSL, has immediately suspended the tournament telecast effective April 24.
