Eighty-five civilians were killed in a village in Nigeria's Kaduna State after an army drone was accidentally fired at them. According to a report by the news agency AFP on Tuesday (Dec 5), the army acknowledged that one of its drones aimed at armed groups had accidentally struck the Tudun Biri village as residents were celebrating a festival. The army did not give details about how many people died, but residents said that the death toll was 85. In a statement, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said, "The Northwest Zonal Office has received details from the local authorities that 85 dead bodies have so far been buried while the search is still ongoing." NEMA said that 66 people were injured and were being treated at a hospital. Most of the killed civilians were women, children, and elderly who had been celebrating Maulud — a Muslim festival. President Tinubu orders investigation On Tuesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered an investigation into the incident. "President Tinubu describes the incident as very unfortunate, disturbing, and painful, expressing indignation and grief over the tragic loss of Nigerian lives," the presidency said in a statement. AFP reported that the Nigerian armed forces often rely on airstrikes in their battle against militias in the northwest and northeast of the country, where jihadists have been fighting for over 10 years. The army said on Tuesday that its drone (which accidentally struck villagers) was on a routine mission. Speaking to AFP, resident Idris Dahiru said, "I was inside the house when the first bomb was dropped... We rushed to the scene to help those affected and then a second bomb was dropped." "My aunt, my brother's wife, and her six children, wives of my four brothers were among the dead. My elder brother's family are all dead, except his infant child who survived," Dahiru added. In the past, military bombing raids have accidentally hit civilians. In September 2021, at least 20 fishermen were killed and several injured in an attack in Kwatar Daban Masara on Lake Chad, when the military mistook them for militants. In 2017, at least 112 people were killed when a fighter jet struck a camp housing 40,000 people displaced by jihadist violence in the town of Rann. (With inputs from agencies)

Nigeria: Army drone strikes civilians accidently, kills 85; president orders investigation

The armed forces of Nigeria have acknowledged that a drone strike on Sunday unintentionally killed at least 85 people who were attending a Muslim festival in the northwest. Residents of Tudun Biri, in the state of Kaduna, had congregated for the Maulud celebration when, at approximately nine o'clock at night, they heard an enormous explosion followed by what sounded like an airliner.

Nigerian football has been thrown into shock after the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 home draw by Lesotho in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, with anger directed at Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro. Nigeria had to come from behind against Lesotho, ranked 153rd by FIFA, in the game played on Thursday in the southern Nigerian city of Uyo

Despite the absence through injury of star forward Victor Osimhen of Napoli, Nigeria had been expected to make a winning start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. Peseiro, 63, has been made the scapegoat. The well-travelled former Venezuela coach was never a popular choice to head the three-time African champions, but the decision to extend his contract till next year’s Africa Cup of Nations has drawn criticism. Nigeria had won all three head-to-head meetings against the southern Africans before Thursday’s draw.

Former Nigeria international defender Ifeanyi Udeze said he was enraged by the "unacceptable" result. "This was our first World Cup qualifier in front of the home fans and we couldn’t beat Lesotho. "This was a match not against Cameroon or the Ivory Coast or Ghana. This was a loss." Analyst David Mikel Okoye blamed the disappointing start by the Eagles squarely on Peseiro.

“That the Super Eagles will go nowhere with Jose Peseiro’s absolutely limited tactical nous is no secret,” he said. “The man does not know how best to utilize this team and he keeps picking the wrong personnel per game with a limiting formation."

Sports journalist Wale Ajayi said it was a mistake to renew the contract of the Portuguese coach. "Peseiro has to go, he's a bad coach," he said. "Renewing his contract was renewing disaster."

Peseiro himself blamed bad luck for the draw. "I am sad of course, disappointed by the result, but my team tried to do the maximum," he said.

Nigeria is gearing up for an "immediate" influx of multi-billion-dollar investments from Saudi Arabia following the signing of a landmark agreement.

Bloomberg reported that the agreement creates a corporate council that opens the door for Saudi Arabia to finance a number of Nigerian industries, including technology, telecommunications, energy, oil and gas, and agriculture.

Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Nigeria's Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, told Bloomberg, "We expect to see significant investment flow immediately" after a productive business round-table between Saudi and Nigerian officials.

The reestablishment of the Nigeria-Saudi Arabia Business Council, initially proposed in 2019 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, signals a new chapter in economic cooperation between the two nations.

Bagudu said that Saudi Arabia wants to make a successful investment, which might cost several billion dollars in Nigeria by means of this council, similar to how it did in India, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

Although precise numbers were not revealed, Bagudu emphasised undertakings from businesses such as the Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Co., who are looking to sign agreements in Nigeria before the year ends. The Saudi counterpart and executives from Salic met with the Nigerian Minister of Agriculture to reinforce collaborations.

Last week marked a milestone in Nigeria-Saudi Arabia relations, with the two nations sealing various investment and cooperation deals. Notably, Saudi Arabia pledged to invest in the overhaul of Nigeria's oil refineries and provide financial support for the government's foreign-exchange reforms.

The momentum continues as Saudi Arabia is set to unveil detailed investment plans within a week, with officials planning to close several deals during their visit to Nigeria by the end of December. The agreement to take action was reaffirmed at the business roundtable by Saudi Arabia's Minister of Trade and Investment, Kahlid El-Falih. "We are coming for implementation, it’s an action visit. It will be to sign and begin delivery on all agreements,” Bloomberg quoted him as saying.

Canada is investigating an explosion at its embassy in Nigeria that killed two people, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said on Monday, as Ottawa joined Washington and London in issuing a warning against nonessential travel to the West African nation.

"We can confirm there was an explosion at our High Commission in Nigeria. The fire is out and we are working to shed light on what caused this situation," Joly said on X.

"I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of the 2 people killed in this tragedy," she said.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu's spokesperson said that there were deaths and injuries in a fire on Monday at the High Commission of Canada but did not give any figures.

"President Tinubu prays for the repose of the departed souls and wishes all injured persons a rapid and full recovery," the statement said.

Canada's High Commission in Nigeria, without commenting on the explosion, said on social media that it had "temporarily suspended operations until further notice."

The embassy issued a travel advisory, warning against non-essential travel to Nigeria, including capital Abuja, "due to the unpredictable security situation throughout the country and the significant risk of terrorism, crime, inter-communal clashes, armed attacks and kidnappings."

Tinubu, preoccupied with fixing the economy, has yet to outline how he plans to tackle widespread insecurity across the country, including a long-running insurgency in the northeast and kidnappings for ransom in the northwest.

The United States and Britain had said on Friday there was an "elevated threat to major hotels in Nigeria's larger cities" and warned against travelling to Africa's most populous nation.

Western countries routinely issue warnings about travelling to Nigeria, which the Abuja government often dismisses as lacking merit.

Nigeria's Supreme Court on Thursday upheld President Bola Tinubu's election win, bringing to an end a legal challenge brought by his two main rivals, who argued that his victory was marred by irregularities.

The ruling will give 71-year-old Tinubu a clear mandate to govern Africa's most populous nation, which is grappling with double-digit inflation, foreign currency shortages, a weakening naira, widespread insecurity and crude oil theft.

The biggest opposition, People's Democratic Party (PDP), said it was "alarmed and disappointed" by the ruling, but Tinubu welcomed the judgment.

"We are all members of one household, and this moment demands that we continue to work and build our country together," Tinubu said in a statement.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has sustained a hamstring injury during national duty. Representing Nigeria in a friendly versus Saudi Arabia last week, the youngster suffered a hamstring issue and the development was confirmed by his club Napoli on Monday (Oct 16). Nigeria's friendly versus Saudi ended in a 2-2 stalemate on Friday (Oct 13).

As a result, the 24-year-old forward withdrew from the game around the 55th minute at the Portimao stadium in Portugal. After the match, a thorough injury scan was carried out and, thus, prompted Osimhen to miss Nigeria's following friendly game -- where they faced Mozambique in Portugal.

According to Sky Sports Italia, it is estimated that Osimhen's injury could take a healing period of about four to six weeks. Despite Nigeria being an OPEC member and one of Africa's major petroleum producers, efforts to combat illegal crude refineries have yielded little success over the years. Thousands of protesters rally in Lagos after Mohbad's death

Thousands of people marched across Nigeria on Thursday (September 21) over the mysterious death of Afrobeat star Ilerioluwa Aloba, better known as MohBad. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, MohBad, 27, died on September 12 in a hospital in Lagos after being admitted for an unknown illness. The Lagos police said his body was exhumed on Thursday in response to complaints about the unclear circumstances surrounding his death.

Protests were held in Lagos on Tuesday to demand justice for the pop star and they quickly spread across the country amid grief and several questions about what caused his death.

As per the report, police said they received complaints about MohBad's death, leading to the setting up of a criminal investigations team to “aggregate all allegations, suspicions, and insinuations from various sources on the death of the singer.”

On Tuesday, Lagos' Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said that those behind the pop star's death will be made to face the law after a thorough investigation. “I also appeal to all friends and fans of the deceased to stay calm and refrain from making inflammatory utterances and reaching prejudicial conclusions on this matter,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“Staying calm and following the process will be our most solemn tribute to the memory of the departed talent,” the governor added.

The death of the young artist has drawn people — and numbers — to his music. In one of his songs titled “Sorry”, the late star spoke about coming from a poor background and his struggles to earn a living through music. In another, “Peace”, he spoke of himself as a “survivor... money chaser — faster than a bullet.”

On X, #justiceformohbad has been trending since MohBad's death. According to a report by BBC, some tributes suggested that MohBad was bullied within the music industry.

Outrage has been particularly directed at Naira Marley, MohBad's former boss. The two had a feud following MohBad splitting up from Marlian Records last year. Marley himself has also called for a thorough investigation into MohBad's death, the report added.
