Nigeria's presidential election tribunal on Wednesday rejected an opposition challenge to Bola Tinubu's win in February's disputed vote, following a pattern seen in previous election years in Africa's most populous country.

No legal challenge to the outcome of a presidential election has succeeded in Nigeria, which returned to democracy in 1999 after three decades of almost uninterrupted military rule and has a history of electoral fraud.

Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who came second and third respectively, had asked the court to invalidate the election, alleging irregularities.

Judge Haruna Tsammani, reading out a lengthy ruling on behalf of the tribunal's panel of five justices, rejected Obi's petition point-by-point. He was due to move onto Abubakar's petition next, which was also expected to be dismissed.

European observers had said in June the elections were marred by problems including operational failures and a lack of transparency that reduced public trust in the process.

However, the elections came and went with little sign of any groundswell of popular opposition, and Tinubu has been accepted by the international community as Nigeria's legitimate leader. As the tribunal was giving its ruling, he was in India preparing to take part in the G20 summit there.

Nigerian election tribunal rejects challenge to Tinubu's presidential poll victory

Nigeria on Wednesday said it received investment pledges worth $14 billion from Indian investors and is seeking to sign an economic cooperation agreement with the South Asian country.

The Nigerian government said that India’s Jindal Steel and Power has agreed to invest $3 billion in Nigeria’s steel industry and Indorama Corp. will invest an extra $8 billion to expand its petrochemical facilities there.

Jitender Sachdeva, the founder chairman of Skipperseil Ltd., and Bharti Enterprises have offered $1.6 billion over four years to construct power plants and $700 million in Nigeria, respectively, according to the government.

Separately, Nigeria authorised a $1 billion collaboration agreement with the Indian government to support the Nigerian Defence Industries Corporation in achieving 40 per cent local manufacturing and production self-sufficiency in defence equipment manufacture within three years, according to Ngelale.

President Bola Tinubu met with Indian business representatives as part of the Nigeria-India presidential roundtable and conference to mobilise international funding for infrastructure development. He will attend the G20 summit in New Delhi later this week as a guest country.

India, which presently holds the rotating presidency of the group, invited Tinubu to attend.

“We are ready to give you the best returns for investment possible, there’s nowhere else like our country,” Tinubu said in the statement.

Instead of relying on borrowing, the government of Africa’s top oil producer aims to promote investments in order to finance the creation of jobs and the construction of urgently needed infrastructure, such as railways, roads, and power plants.

With his largest reforms in decades, Tinubu has done away with a well-liked but expensive petrol subsidy and lifted restrictions on foreign exchange trading. With record debt, sluggish growth, unemployment, and double-digit inflation, he has vowed to revitalise the economy.

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is considering to join the G20 as the second member of the continent after South Africa and is seeking advice on the advantages and disadvantages of doing so.

Police in Nigeria said on Tuesday (August 29) that they raided a gay wedding in the southern Delta state. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the police in Delta stormed a hotel in Ekpan where the wedding was being held. Initially, 200 people were arrested, but later 67 of them were detained after initial investigations, state police spokesperson Bright Edafe told reporters. Edafe said that homosexuality would never be tolerated in Nigeria. "The amazing part of it was that we saw two suspects, and there is a video recording where they were performing their wedding ceremony. We are in Africa and we are in Nigeria. We cannot copy the Western world because we don’t have the same culture," the police spokesperson further said and pointed out that the suspects would be charged in court at the end of the investigation. In a live broadcast of the suspects' parade by the police, one of the arrested said they were not attending the wedding ceremony and were at the hotel for another engagement. Another suspect said he does not identify as a gay person and was arrested while on his way to a fashion show. Amnesty International condemns arrests Amnesty International's Nigeria office condemned the arrest and called for an immediate end to this "witch-hunt." “In a society where corruption is rampant, this (same-sex) law banning same-sex relationships is increasingly being used for harassment, extortion and blackmail of people,” Isa Sanusi, Amnesty International's director in Nigeria, told the Associated Press. Nigeria is among the African countries which has enacted laws criminalising same-sex relationships. Arrests of gay people are common in the country with a prison sentence of up to 14 years under the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act. Accomplices face 10 years in prison. In the past, activists have accused the Nigerian police of using the same-sex prohibition law to carry out mass arrests that sometimes include straight people. The French African empire has ended only in political terms. But economically, even to this day a total of 14 African nations have their economies tied to the French Central Bank. These nations must deposit half of their foreign exchange reserves with the French treasury. What this effectively means is that 14% of the African population that lives on over 965,000 square miles of land, that represents about 12% of the African continent's GDP has no financial sovereignty.

England scraped into the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup when they beat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties in Brisbane on Monday. Despite Nigeria having the better of the chances throughout, the European Champions -- reduced to 10 players after 87 minutes -- snuck home in front of 50,000 spectators after the match had finished 0-0 at the end of extra time.

England held on after playmaker Lauren James received a red card for a needless stamp and will know they have to improve if they want to add the World Cup to their European crown. They will face Colombia or Jamaica on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals. England got off to a terrible start in the penalty shootout when Georgia Stanway fired wide, but Desire Oparanozie couldn't take advantage and missed with an almost identical effort.

Beth England made no mistake, but Nigeria's Michelle Alozie shot way over top to give England an advantage they never surrendered, sealing the win when Chloe Kelly calmly converted. The Lionesses, who last year won the European Championship at a packed Wembley Stadium in London, were expected to win comfortably against the world's 40th ranked team.

The Nigerians, however, have shown in this World Cup that they have the game to challenge anybody. They stunned hosts Australia in the group stage, taking advantage of their speed in the transition to score a 3-2 win. And they employed the same tactics against England, whose back three were regularly exposed by the Nigerian attack.

England had started the match strongly and rattled Nigeria in the opening skirmishes as the Lionesses found plenty of space out wide. They also controlled possession, completing 173 passes in the first half to Nigeria's 83. But it was the Nigerians who looked the most dangerous and they gave the European champions a real fright on a number of occasions.

England-born Ashleigh Plumptre had two golden chances to open the scoring, the first coming in the 16th minute when a strike from outside the box crashed into the crossbar. A minute later she forced a fine diving save from Mary Earps. The Nigerians had eight shots at goal in the first half, three more than England, whose best chance fell to Alessia Russo in the 23rd minute.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first, England dominating possession but Nigeria looking the more dangerous. England had a golden chance to seal the match with 15 minutes left only for Chiamaka Nnadozie to pull off a fine save from Rachel Daly's powerful header.

The game inevitably went to extra time and again Nigeria looked most likely, Michele Alozie and Oshoala both going close, but neither team could break the deadlock.
