Niger coup: Nigerian President Bola Tinubu writes to Senate seeking support for military intervention

Four Nigerian travellers miraculously survived a harrowing two-week voyage across the Atlantic Ocean while precariously sitting on the rudder of a cargo ship.

During their perilous journey spanning 5,600 kilometres (3,500 miles), the Nigerian men managed to survive despite running out of food and drink after 10 days. They even resorted to drinking sea water splashing beneath them, to survive for another four days.

Their incredible survival story came to an end when Brazilian federal police rescued them upon the ship's arrival at the southeastern port of Vitoria.

Nigeria: Aircraft crash forces Lagos to activate emergency response plan

Nigeria advanced to the Women's World Cup knockout stages for the third time in their history after a 0-0 draw with Ireland in their final Group B match on Monday, with the African side finishing second in the group behind hosts Australia.

Nigeria started the game top of the standings and only needed to avoid defeat to reach the last 16, regardless of the result in the other Group B match in Melbourne where Australia thrashed Canada 4-0 to leapfrog the Africans. Nigeria will have to wait until Tuesday to discover who their last-16 opponents will be next week in Brisbane, but they side are likely to play European champions England who are favourites to top Group D.

"I don't think anybody, before we got here, believed that we could get out of this group and go through it without losing a match," Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum said. "So I'm so proud of them and the effort they put in and so happy for them that they're getting to experience this."

Both teams were playing in their away kits to avoid an all-green clash. But Brisbane's Lang Park was a sea of green in the stands, with plenty of support for Ireland despite their early elimination. After Irish skipper Katie McCabe flashed an early effort wide, Nigeria came closest to taking the lead in the first half through striker Asisat Oshoala when they pounced on an errant pass from Louise Quinn.

Oshoala was set through on goal with just the keeper to beat but the Barcelona striker fired wide to give Ireland a reprieve.

I dropped back and I knew I needed to make a special save on the line, so I just kind of threw my body out," said Brosnan. "I wanted to keep us in it. I knew we deserved something from today, so I'm really happy with that."

Brosnan came to Ireland's rescue again when Nigeria attempted to break through the defence with a clever set-piece routine before the Everton keeper rushed off her line to snatch the ball.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie saved a penalty to help Nigeria secure a valuable 0-0 draw against Olympic champions Canada in their Women's World Cup opener on Friday in a result that threw the group wide open.

Nnadozie denied Christine Sinclair from the spot in the 50th minute with a low dive to her left as the Canada skipper missed out on becoming the first player to score in six World Cups in front of 21,000 fans at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. At the end of a scrappy, bruising contest, Nigeria were down to 10 via a late red card and both teams earned a point to trail Group B leaders Australia by two following the co-hosts' 1-0 win over Ireland on Thursday.

"We've got to move on very quickly, you know, you can get lost and be really down on that," said Canada coach Bev Priestman, whose team next faces Ireland in Perth on Wednesday. "Of course the team and I am devastated. We didn't get three points. But at the end of the day we got one and we took two from another team."

Both sides had their chances but 40-year-old Sinclair, who came off ashen-faced in the 70th minute, was perhaps the most frustrated, having also missed a good opportunity when she fired wide in the ninth minute. Nigeria, the lowest-ranked team in the group, defended desperately to hold out the Canadians, and a roaring Nnadozie slumped to her knees, pumping her fists in celebration after the final whistle.

"I’m probably going to embarrass her, but I think she’s one of the best young goalkeepers in the world today," said Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum. "I think Chiamaka's save really kind of lit the fire and made us realise there's still something to play for."

Sinclair, however, found space on the edge of the area early and blasted wide of the right post, with Jordyn Huitema heading well wide later in the first half. The Africans also struggled on attack, but Ifeoma Onumonu forced goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan into a diving save at the far post after unloading from long range in the 23rd minute.

Sheridan came close to gifting Nigeria the lead when she charged off her line 10 minutes from the break, missing the ball with her attempted clearance. But Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala's cross at the near post was blocked and both teams went to the break frustrated.

Canada's frustration spiked after the interval as Sinclair was brought down in the box by Francisca Ordega, the penalty awarded by VAR. Nnadozie blocked Sinclair's tepid shot and later denied substitute Evelyne Viens, who latched onto a header in the area and volleyed straight into the keeper's arms.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has courted controversy for riding in a presidential convoy of more than a hundred vehicles. This development came just weeks after Nigeria abolished subsidies on fuel. This is exactly why the president of an impoverished African nation is facing criticism of 'squandering' public money and being insensitive towards the country's needs.

Local media has also taken on the president for what it described as 'flaunting' the 'opulence' which would be unusual even for those countries which lend money to Nigeria.

The president rode in a convoy of more than 100 cars in Nigeria's Lagos after returning from abroad. The videos were shared on social media.

Calls to cut costs

Tinubu is gearing up to announce ministerial appointments. He is facing calls from the people for cutting the cost of governance.

The government's decision to abolish fuel subsidies has caused a dramatic increase in fuel prices. This has reportedly doubled the cost of transport and food prices in Nigeria. Additionally, the government has imposed new taxes on diesel and car ownership.

The situation has led to many demanding curbs on the expenses of the government.

“The government is too big; we need a limited government,” said Olisa Agbakoba, a senior advocate of Nigeria, in an interview on Arise TV recently.

Some analysts however described this as bad optics. Calls to cut costs Tinubu is gearing up to announce ministerial appointments. In an inaugural lecture for Tinubu last month, Akinwumi Adesina, the president of the African Development Bank, criticised the high cost of governance. Nigerian workers shine as second-most hardworking globally, one spot behind Mexico

With time, trends change, and in this digital age, every day a new scam comes to light. The latest scam to shock the world is called "sextortion" and the victims are young men. These scams are happening on social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram.

Here's all you need to know:

What is 'sextortion'?

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines 'sextortion' as a "serious crime" in which a perpetrator threatens to make public their victim's private information, images, videos or other data. This includes nude images, and more often than not, is done as a way to extort huge sums of money.

In a conversation with Fox News, a former Snapchat employee, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "The potential harm, especially as it relates to minors, is severe."

He revealed that "We've seen thousands of reports this year. But … the ratio of reported to not reported is pretty high." He alleged that probably less than 5 per cent of the cases actually get reported.

Reportedly, on Snapchat, the issue began popping up more frequently around the beginning of 2021.

How does 'sextortion' work?

It's a financially motivated fraud. Do you remember the "Nigerian Princes" who around 20 years ago would email people asking them for "small help"? These days, those emails, and messages from bad actors posing as Nigerian royalty are nothing more than meme material and something that can be used to poke fun at the older generation.

Similarly, sextortion is the latest fraud. In it, similar bad actors target young, gullible men. Posing as attractive young women from the United States or Western Europe, these fraudsters send their victim friend requests.

Also read | Previously undocumented effect of IVF uncovered; helps 1-in-5 women conceive naturally second time around

Over time, they establish trust and eventually start requesting nudes. Once the victim sends the personal images, these "sextortionists" threaten to post these images online.

Threatening to expose the victims' nudes, they extort money.

As per the Fox News report, the former Snapchat employee told them that in some cases, the scammers paste their target's nude images on fake "FBI Most Wanted" posters. They list them as sex offenders, paedophiles, child rapists and murderers.

Incidentally, as per him, these new scams also mostly originate from Nigeria. However, he says, "It's pretty much understood that when we report this stuff, it's not going anywhere. The FBI doesn't have enough leverage with Nigerian authorities. Nigerian authorities don't have enough resources to do it, anyway."

Why target young men?

Simply put, "Young men are not used to this at all."

As per the former Snapchat employee, "They're targeting young men because young men are most likely to fall for this type of scheme."

He further remarked, "Also, young men are not used to being targeted like this."

According to the Fox News report, compared to young men, young women are not so easy to scam through this method. As young girls, they are taught to be cautious while talking to strangers online.

In cases where they do become a victim of sextortion, it is mostly about sexual content. They are mostly forced to send more sexually explicit content. However, young men face fraud where money is demanded from them.

Such abuse can have a huge devastating impact on young victims, especially teenagers, who do not know what to do or who to turn to for help.

Extreme, tragic steps by victims

In some cases, victims of such sextortion scams end up taking extreme steps. Fox News reports that, in some cases, young people have been known to resort to self-harm and suicide.

Last year, Jordan DeMay, a 17-year-old teenager from Michigan, took his own life after falling prey to sextortion. On 25 March 2022, the high school student was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On Instagram, he was approached by scammers posing as a young woman under the account alias "dani.roberts".

As per Fox News, the account was real, and it belonged to the real Dani Roberts, but was hacked. DeMay's nudes were used to leverage money, but once the young boy found himself unable to cough up any more money, he chose to end his life.

In another similar case, Gavin Guffey, the 17-year-old son of South Carolina state representative Brandon Guffey, killed himself after falling prey to a sextortion scam.

Back in July 2022, the young man was tricked by blackmailers posing as a young girl. After sending a nude picture, he faced extortion.

17-year-old Gavin Guffey (2nd from right) with his family. Image: ClickActu/Twitter

As per a report by UK-based Independent, the recent high-school graduate ended up sending the scammers $25 by Venmo. This was all the money young Gavin Guffey had in his account.

He reportedly begged the blackmailers for time to raise extra money but was only pushed. Under pressure, the teenager chose to kill himself with a self-inflicted gun wound.

Even after his death, the sextortionists reportedly kept up their efforts to extort his family. As per a CNN report from May 2023, Representative Brandon Guffey reported that the messages started just weeks after the 17-year-old's funeral. On August 20, the day young Gavin Guffey would've turned 18, the blackmailers sent his father a message which said, 'Did I tell you your son begged for his life,' with a laughing face emoji.
Explained: 'Sextortion', the new 'Nigerian prince' scam on Snapchat and Instagram

In Nigeria, “wastepreneurs” are providing an answer to this by taking waste straight from the dump, transforming it and redefining its purpose.

Nigerian parents pay school bills with recyclable waste

Nigeria’s newly elected President Bola Tinubu has wasted no time in implementing a series of much-needed reforms aimed at realising the potential of Africa's largest economy, after a decade-long swing between slowdown and inflation.

Nigeria economic reforms: What do Tinubu’s reforms entail?

The reforms have been cited as bold and comprehensive.

They include the elimination of a costly fuel subsidy, the replacement of the country's central bank governor, and the initiation of a deep overhaul of Nigeria's power industry described as chronically inadequate in recent memory.

Nigeria economic reforms: What do they mean?

The measures have garnered a positive response, with Nigeria's dollar bonds experiencing a rally and stocks reaching a 15-year high as per a Bloomberg report. The economic reforms have been reported as Nigeria’s shift towards economic orthodoxy – unconventional leadership decisions taken with an aim towards overall betterment of the economy in the face of scarcity.

Also read | 'Nigerians have chosen well': President Muhammudu Buhari hails successor Tinubu

While there remains skepticism on overall implementation of the reforms given the country's tumultuous history of leaders failing to scale through the initial economic optimism, investors view these policy changes as the beginning of a broader economic transformation.

The shift also aligns Nigeria with other countries like Turkey and Colombia, where similar policy changes have generated market enthusiasm after authorities signaled a departure from investor-unfriendly economic practices.

In a Bloomberg report, Amaka Anku, Africa director at Eurasia Group, commended the swift implementation of challenging reforms during the initial period of Tinubu's presidency.

This demonstrates determination and creates momentum and goodwill, which in turn boosts both domestic and international confidence and encourages investment, he noted.

Nigeria economic reforms: Ordinary Nigerians face burden

Meanwhile, the negative effects of these adjustments are primarily affecting the currency and the Nigerian population itself. The currency naira has significantly depreciated against the dollar since Tinubu assumed office, while the price of petrol has tripled.

This combination is expected to burden ordinary Nigerians, who are already grappling with widespread unemployment and soaring inflation.

Consumer inflation rate could climb as high as 29.8 per cent in June, from 22.4 per cent in May, as rising gasoline prices lift the cost of food and transport, according to Rand Merchant Bank analysts cited in Bloomberg.

This could force the central bank to raise its policy rate to 22 per cent in the second half, from 18.5 per cent, they said.

Nigeria economic reforms: Stocks rise after firing of central bank governor

Nigerian stocks and Eurobonds have continued to rise since the ousting of Godwin Emefiele, the former head of the Central Bank of Nigeria, on June 9.

Investors interpret his dismissal, along with his subsequent arrest, as an indication that President Tinubu will adopt a more market-friendly approach compared to his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.

Also read | Explained: The political life of outgoing Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari

Buhari's multiple exchange rate regime, which hindered the economy, was largely attributed to Emefiele, making him unpopular among the new president's allies.

Gordon Bowers, an analyst at Columbia Threadneedle Investments, described that the removal of the fuel subsidy and foreign exchange reforms will positively impact Nigeria's fiscal and external accounts, reducing long-standing distortions.

These reforms were considered essential minimum requirements, allowing Tinubu to shift his focus to growth-oriented and productivity-enhancing reforms that can substantially raise Nigeria's potential growth rate.

Nigeria economic reforms: Where would the currency settle?

The ultimate settling price for the naira under the new administration remains uncertain. But a pre-election report from a Tinubu advisory committee suggested a target range of 550-600 naira per dollar, with commercial banks acting as primary dealers through a willing-buyer-willing-seller model.

Experts anticipate further depreciation of the currency before it stabilises at a significantly weaker level.

Nigeria’s newly elected President Bola Tinubu has wasted no time in implementing a series of much-needed reforms aimed at realising the potential of Africa's largest economy, after a decade-long swing between slowdown and inflation.

Also read | 'Nigerians have chosen well': President Muhammudu Buhari hails successor Tinubu While there remains skepticism on overall implementation of the reforms given the country's tumultuous history of leaders failing to scale through the initial economic optimism, investors view these policy changes as the beginning of a broader economic transformation. Nigeria economic reforms: Ordinary Nigerians face burden Meanwhile, the negative effects of these adjustments are primarily affecting the currency and the Nigerian population itself. Nigeria economic reforms: Stocks rise after firing of central bank governor Nigerian stocks and Eurobonds have continued to rise since the ousting of Godwin Emefiele, the former head of the Central Bank of Nigeria, on June 9. Investors interpret his dismissal, along with his subsequent arrest, as an indication that President Tinubu will adopt a more market-friendly approach compared to his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. Also read | Explained: The political life of outgoing Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Buhari's multiple exchange rate regime, which hindered the economy, was largely attributed to Emefiele, making him unpopular among the new president's allies. Let’s focus on Nigeria's currency woes as the Naira takes a sharp dive, reaching a record low against the US Dollar. with heavy demand for US Dollars, the central bank recently auctioned dollars at a significantly weaker exchange rate, raising concerns about a potential devaluation as a result, the naira hit a record low, creating a ripple effect across the economy.

Nigeria's Naira hits record low

Nigeria's currency, the Naira, has reached a historic low following the recent dollar auction conducted by the central bank, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. The auction conducted by the central bank saw dollars sold at a naira rate nearly 30 percent weaker than the tightly controlled official market rate. This has fueled speculation of an imminent devaluation, adding to the concerns raised after the inauguration of Nigeria's new president last month.

The impact of the currency's depreciation was felt immediately, as the Naira slipped by 0.7 percent - the steepest decline in nearly six months - in official trading on the Nigeria Exchange. It eventually settled at 467.04 naira to a dollar, marking an unprecedented low point in the history of the Nigerian currency.

Nigeria's dwindling dollar earnings and reserves, coupled with the high demand for foreign currency from industries and importers, have compelled the government to manage supply and demand through multiple exchange rates. However, this system has resulted in a significant portion of the population resorting to the black market, where the Naira is approximately 40 percent weaker than the official rate.
