February saw deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon and the fragile Cerrado savanna hit record highs. As per the latest figures released by the Brazilian government on Friday, last month 322 square kilometres (or 124 square miles) of forest cover were destroyed in Brazil's share of the world's biggest rainforest. This is 62 per cent higher that the previous record established in&nbsp;February 2022. The data based on the national space agency's DETER surveillance programme shows the extent of challenges faced by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in his quest to reverse surging environmental destruction.

In Cerrado, satellite data showed 558 square kilometres of destruction. This is up 99 per cent from February 2022 and nearly double the February 2020 record of 283 square kilometres.

At least two dead, 28 missing as Gabonese ferry sinks; 121 rescued

The outgoing president of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), David Panuelo, in a letter has accused China of "political warfare" in the Pacific nation and of bribing Palikir officials. Just two months before his presidency comes to an end, Panuelo said, "China is seeking to ensure that, in the event of a war in our Blue Pacific continent between themselves and Taiwan, that the FSM is, at best, aligned with the PRC [China] instead of the United States, and, at worst, that the FSM chooses to ‘abstain’ altogether."

These revelations come as China seeks to ramp up its efforts to influence the Indo-Pacific region, by creating a war battle with the US and its other allies.&nbsp;

Most of Panuelo’s letter was dedicated to castigating Beijing for its current activities in the FSM.

Further in his letter to the FSM's Congress and state governors, he suggested on switching the country's diplomatic recognition from Beijing to Taipei, even naming a price to do so, which is $50 million.

Panuelo said he met Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, back in Feb to solicit from Taiwan what their potential assistance to the FSM could look like if they switch their diplomatic relation to support them instead of Beijing.&nbsp;

"I was transparent with foreign minister Wu; we project we need an injection of approximately $50 million to meet our future needs. We can and will receive this, over a three-year period, if and when we establish diplomatic relations with Taiwan," he said.&nbsp;

United States Representative Lauren Boebert expressing her gratitude revealed that her eldest son is expecting a baby boy with his girlfriend this year in April. The 36-year-old US lawmaker shared the news publicly during a 'Moms for America' event on Tuesday. Boebert said she and her husband, "are so excited to welcome this new life into our family." As per her Twitter account, Tyler, the oldest of her four boys, turned 17 on March 21, 2022.&nbsp;

Her early life

Lauren herself was a teen mom. During the event, she&nbsp;said, "I was a brand-new mom, I had to make hard decisions on successfully raising my child, or getting to high school biology class. And I chose to take care of my child."&nbsp;

After dropping out of high school, she took a job as an assistant manager at McDonald's in Rifle.

She then got married to Jayson Boebert in 2007 and started working&nbsp;for job filing for a natural gas drilling company and then became a pipeliner, a team member that builds and maintains pipelines and pumping stations.&nbsp;

Later in 2020, she earned a GED certificate, a month before her first selection primary.&nbsp;

'The MOM Talk'

Boebert told the audience of the event that she had a conversation with her son when she learned about the pregnancy.&nbsp;

Her son asked her, "Well, didn’t you make granny a 36-year-old granny?" to which Boebert replied "Yes."

Warranting some laughs among the audience during the event, she said that she told Tyler that him becoming a father at 17 is "hereditary."

Boebert's &nbsp;take on abortion

The US Congresswoman said that she is completely against "abortion." She went on to explain that although the pregnancy rate throughout the country is the same, the rate of abortion is high in urban areas, while the number of teen moms is much higher in rural areas.&nbsp;

She said that the rural conservative communities are special because their teenage girls who become pregnant tend to "value life" and the preciousness of life that is about to be born.&nbsp;

A backlash for Lauren&nbsp;

This big announcement comes days after the woman leader received criticism for speaking against funding "comprehensive sex education " in public schools during a Conservative Political Action Conference event.&nbsp;

According to the interview clip posted on Twitter, she spoke on her belief that schools shouldn't teach students how to have or enjoy intercourse, regardless of their relationship. However, she did not mention if she thinks "prevention or abstinence" should be taught to students or not.

Giving an update to Genesis fans on Phil Collin's health, Mike Rutherford, the band's former guitarist and bassist during an interview with BBC Breakfast said he's 'more immobile' than he used to be. The famous drummer, songwriter, producer and actor has been experiencing health issues for the last 16 years after a spinal injury in 2007, which damaged the vertebrae in his upper neck and also left him with nerve damage. This injury impacted Collins's ability to perform, as last year during the last ever show of Genesis where Collins performed the show in a wheelchair. Here's everything you need to know about Phil.

His career with Genesis :

Philip David Charles Collins born on January 30, 1952, was the drummer and later lead singer of the rock band Genesis. He joined the band in 1970 and signed the Charisma Records and recorded their second album Trespass but suffered a setback after drummer John Mayhew and guitarist Anthony Philips left the band.

He became the lead vocalist during the recording of their album 'A Trick of the Tail,' which was a commercial and critical success, reaching number 3 in the UK and 31 in the US. &nbsp;

Health update:

During the interview, Mike said, "as you know, Phil is a bit...He's much more immobile than he used to be, which is a shame, but at the tour, he was in good spritis." He added that Collins is doing fine now at home, and is enjoying life.&nbsp;

Further talking, Mike said that Phil's son Nic will be playing the drums and he also played the drums for their farewell tour, as Phil cannot even hold a drumstick now due to nerve damage. Mike referred to Nic's talent as a skill clearly running their family.&nbsp;

For the last few years, Collins has also been walking but with a cane and uses a wheelchair mostly.&nbsp;

Phil is father to five children including Nic and Emily in Paris star Lily Collins.&nbsp;

The Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), one of the leading lenders in the United States has sparked a wave of panic in the country and brought down banking shares across the world. The development comes as the SVB announced a share sale to shore up its finances, but the plan did not go well on the Wall Street as investors went on a sell-off spree, triggering a crash in its shares.

As concerns over the bank's financial position spooked the market, a person familiar with the matter said Greg Becker, the SVB Financial Group Chief Executive Officer held a conference call around 11:30 am with the bank's advising clients including its venture and capital investors for 10 minutes and urged them to 'stay calm' and to support the bank like they had been doing for the past 40 years. Now to understand what happened with one of the US's oldest lenders, it's important to look at why did it happen and what's next. Here's everything you need to know:

When and how did the crisis begin?

As per Google Finance, SVB's stock fell 60 per cent ($106.04) on Thursday and its bond posted record declines.

Back in 2021, the bank saw a massive influx in its deposits which jumped from $61.67 billion to almost $189.20 billion. As its deposits grew, it failed to generate its loan book fast enough to generate the yield it wanted to see on the deposited capital. To tackle this, the bank purchased a large mortgage-backed security (MBS) worth $80 billion for its hold-to-maturity (HTM) portfolio. Over 95 per cent of these MBS were for over 10 years, with an average yield of 1.56 per cent.&nbsp;

However, with the rise in Fed rates, the value of SVB's MBS decreased, as the customers could buy "risk free" bonds from the Fed at a 2.5x higher yield, meaning,&nbsp;with the rising value of the Fed, the value of existing bonds fell.&nbsp;

Who are the SVB's clients?

The United States' leading lender is deeply connected to startups, as its focuses on trade in Silicon Valley and tech startups only.&nbsp;

As per the bank's website, it does business with over 50 per cent of all US venture capital-backed startups and almost 45 per cent of US venture-backed tech and healthcare companies.

The SVB announced that it had sold $21 billion of its Available For Sale (AFS) securities at a $1.8 billion loss and was raising another $2.5 billion in equity and debt.&nbsp;

This came as a surprise for its investors, who thought that the bank won't sell its AFS securities. Prominent venture capitalists advised businesses and startups to withdraw their money from the bank.&nbsp;

According to Bloomberg, a high-profile VC firm, Founders Fund, asked its portfolio companies to move their money. Union Square Ventures and Founder Collective also advised their portfolio companies to pull their funds from the bank.&nbsp;

What could happen next?

With the ongoing crisis at the SVB, analysts have raised their respective concerns.

According to a founding engineer at Glean, Debarghya Das if tech companies and startups continue to pull their money out of the bank, the SVB might go bankrupt, and tech companies would be wiped out, raising the chances of recession. &nbsp;

The Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), one of the leading lenders in the United States has sparked a wave of panic in the country and brought down banking shares across the world.

Here's everything you need to know: When and how did the crisis begin? As per Google Finance, SVB's stock fell 60 per cent ($106.04) on Thursday and its bond posted record declines. Back in 2021, the bank saw a massive influx in its deposits which jumped from $61.67 billion to almost $189.20 billion. As its deposits grew, it failed to generate its loan book fast enough to generate the yield it wanted to see on the deposited capital. To tackle this, the bank purchased a large mortgage-backed security (MBS) worth $80 billion for its hold-to-maturity (HTM) portfolio. Over 95 per cent of these MBS were for over 10 years, with an average yield of 1.56 per cent. However, with the rise in Fed rates, the value of SVB's MBS decreased, as the customers could buy "risk free" bonds from the Fed at a 2.5x higher yield, meaning, with the rising value of the Fed, the value of existing bonds fell. Who are the SVB's clients? The United States' leading lender is deeply connected to startups, as its focuses on trade in Silicon Valley and tech startups only. A new study has revealed that plastic pollution in the world's oceans has reached "unprecedented levels" since 2005, urging for a legally binding international treaty to stop the harmful waste.

The study published in the journal PLOS One on Wednesday found that there are almost 170 trillion pieces of plastics, mainly microplastics on the surface of the world's oceans. As per experts, the amounts were much higher than what was anticipated and the rate of plastic entering the oceans can increase severely in the coming years if left unchecked.&nbsp;

Ocean plastic pollution is a persistent problem across the globe which makes animals consume plastics, which eventually is consumed by humans.&nbsp;

For this, researchers took plastic samples from more than 11,000 stations around the world mainly focusing on a 40-year period between 1979 and 2019. The researchers claimed that the sources of pollution are numerous.&nbsp;

In 1950, only two million tonnes of plastic waste was there.

The study examined samples from the North Atlantic, the South Atlantic, the North Pacific, the South Pacific, and the Indian and Mediterranean oceans.

The research was produced by Economist Impact and The Nippon Foundation.&nbsp;

Lisa Erdle, one of the contributing authors told AFP, "we see a really rapid increase since 2005 because there is a rapid increase in production and also a limited number of policies that are controlling the release of plastic into the ocean."

According to the report, as per current trends, plastic use will nearly get double from 2019 across the G20 countries by 2050 by reaching 451 million tonnes each year.

Indonesia is all set to move its capital from Jakarta to Borneo over environmental issues such as&nbsp;being congested, sinking into seawater, and being prone to earthquakes.&nbsp;

Officials said the new metropolis city will be a "sustainable forest city," that puts the environment at the heart of the development and will be carbon neutral by 2045, Associated Press reported.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo envisions the construction of the new capital as a "nostrum for the problems in Jakarta, which will also allow the country to start afresh."&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/an-indonesian-court-sentence-two-officials-for-negligence-during-a-stampede-that-killed-135-people-570260">Also read |&nbsp;Indonesian court jails two officials for negligence over stampede that killed 135 people</a>

Why is Indonesia moving its capital?&nbsp;

Jakarta, home to&nbsp;10 million people has been described as the world's most rapidly sinking city which is estimated to be completely submerged by 2050. &nbsp;

Officials claimed that the main reason behind moving the capital&nbsp;is uncontrolled groundwater extraction which has been exacerbated by the rising Java Sea due to climate change. Although it's just not water issues only, the air is also heavily polluted, and it floods regularly due to clogged roads, and the estimated&nbsp;congestion cost is around $4.5&nbsp;billion a year.&nbsp;

This prompted the president to plan for a new capital, which he wants&nbsp;to establish as the city of 'Nusantara,' that will allow the construction of government buildings and housing from scratch.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/indonesia-to-start-building-new-capital-city-worth-34-billion-in-august-see-pics-491055#the-new-capital-491044">Also read |&nbsp;Indonesia to start building new capital city worth $34 billion in August - see pics</a>

Environmentalists, however, are&nbsp;not happy with the decision and have been raising their concerns as this plan will cause massive deforestation and will pose threat to the habitat of endangered species like&nbsp;orangutans.&nbsp;

An Indonesian non-governmental organisation, Forest Watch Indonesia had in its 2022 report warned that most of the forested areas in the new capital are&nbsp;production forests, which means that&nbsp;they could be permitted for forestry and extractive activities which&nbsp;would cause deforestation.&nbsp;

According to AP, at least five villages with over 100 Balik people are relocating because of the construction.&nbsp;

Till now, no status regarding the protection of the remaining natural forests in the new capital has been mentioned.

China now has an advanced fifth-generation fighter jet J-20 because it&nbsp;copied&nbsp;US military tech and could pose&nbsp;more challenges for the American military in future if necessary steps aren't taken to safeguard weapon information, US defence experts claimed.

Japan is known for its technology, especially in its restaurants where dining is all high-tech. But recently several videos went viral, where one showed a teenager licking the open top of a soy sauce bottle and rubbing saliva on passing food at a kaitenzushi restaurant, raising hygiene concerns.

Police in central Japan have&nbsp;arrested three people for taking part in the pranks.&nbsp;“We hope that the recent arrests will allow the public to recognize that actions which undermine our trust-based structure for our customers is a ‘crime,’”&nbsp;Kura Sushi, one of the restaurant chains, said.

The hi-tech sushi dining industry is currently struggling to keep up with its reputation and might remove its main attraction: the conveyor belts.

As of data from 2021, Tokyo's kaitenzushi industry is worth an estimated ¥740 billion ($ 5.4 billion). It has been hit hard by a spate of viral videos showing pranksters licking communal sauce bottles, &nbsp;spraying sushi with hand sanitiser and even snatching plates of food destined for other tables, The Guardian reported.

Choshimaru, which operates restaurants in the capital city said its conveyor belts would possibly halt, forcing its staff to deliver orders by hand, after a video showed a cigarette in a container of pickled ginger.

In response to the video, staff at the chain started taking utensils and condiments to tables every time a new group of clients took their seats.

The 45-year-old ex-employee worked as a senior director in product design for the microblogging site. The Iceland-based entrepreneur sold his company, Ueno, a creative design agency to Twitter in 2021 and became a full-time employee at the microblogging platform.&nbsp;

The conversation went viral, with Musk wading in with some replies. He criticised Halli saying that he is an independently wealthy man who actually did no actual work and claimed his disability as an excuse that prevented him from typing, yet was simultaneously tweeting up a storm.

Musk added that he can't say if he has a lot of respect for that.

However, hours later, Musk took to the platform to apologise after&nbsp;former Lonely Planet CEO Daniel Houghton vouched for the designer and tweeted that he had directly worked with him. Musk also offered&nbsp;Thorleifsson his job back.

"I would like to apologise to Halli for my misunderstanding of his situation. It was based on things I was told that were untrue or, in some cases, true, but not meaningful."

"He is considering remaining at Twitter," he added.

After being fired, Halli told BBC that HR remained unresponsive to his queries about whether he was fired or not, following which he had to take up with Musk on Twitter.

"My theory is they made a mistake and are now looking for anything they can find to make this a "for cause" firing to avoid having to fulfil their contractual obligations," he said.

The UK government will unveil a highly anticipated yet controversial bill on Tuesday aimed at stopping illegal migrant crossings across the English Channel. It would ban those making the perilous journey using small boats from claiming asylum in the country and will deport them swiftly. If passed, the draft law will also prevent those deported from re-entering the UK and ever claiming British citizenship. The home secretary will have the duty to carry out these deportations, according to reports. The proposed legislation has been heavily criticised by rights groups who claim it is unworkable and unfairly targets refugees. Ministers from PM Rishi Sunak's government, however, claim it is necessary.&nbsp;

Tackling the migrant issue was one of five key priorities outlined by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in January. His party, which as per Reuters is languishing in polls, is under severe pressure to handle the issue and the PM is even facing pressure from within his party to come up with an appropriate solution.

AFP reports that the new law comes days before a summit with French President Emmanuel Macron. The Friday summit reportedly has cooperation&nbsp;to "stop the boats" high on its agenda.

The UK government will unveil a highly anticipated yet controversial bill on Tuesday aimed at stopping illegal migrant crossings across the English Channel. It would ban those making the perilous journey using small boats from claiming asylum in the country and will deport them swiftly. If passed, the draft law will also prevent those deported from re-entering the UK and ever claiming British citizenship. The home secretary will have the duty to carry out these deportations, according to reports. The proposed legislation has been heavily criticised by rights groups who claim it is unworkable and unfairly targets refugees. Ministers from PM Rishi Sunak's government, however, claim it is necessary. Global progress on women's rights is "won over decades (is) vanishing before our eyes" said United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Monday. He warned that gender equality remains a distant goal. Speaking during a speech ahead of International Women's Day on March 8, he said, "Gender equality is growing more distant. On the current track, UN Women puts it 300 years away."

Ticking off a litany of abuses like maternal mortality, child marriage, girls being denied education and more, that women face, he said that "women's rights are being abused, threatened, and violated around the world."&nbsp;

Mentioning the dire conditions in Afghanistan, he remarked, "women and girls have been erased from public life."&nbsp;

While he did not name other countries, Guterres stressed that "in many places, women's sexual and reproductive rights are being rolled back (and) in some countries, girls going to school risk kidnapping and assault."

"The patriarchy is fighting back. But so are we," remarked Guterres, adding "the United Nations stands with women and girls everywhere."
