World Earth Day 2023: Every year on April 22, we observe World Earth Day to spread awareness and support the environmental protection this planet needs. The first-ever Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970. The theme for this year is a continuation of last year's "Invest in Our Planet" and "Get Inspired. Take Action." On this day a few committees organise events across the world. April 16 to 22 is named as "Earth Week," dedicated to educating people about climate change this planet experiences and steps against it and being a part of the green revolution. However, despite such initiatives, IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) underlines that we still are off track in meeting targets.

Earth Day 2023: History

Earth Day was initially founded in 1970 to educate people about environmental issues. The day began as a "national teach-in on the environment" by Senator Gaylord Nelson, the brainchild behind the idea.

On the first Earth Day in 1970, thousands took part in rallies held in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and many American cities, Environmental Protection Agency reported. It was effective at raising awareness about environmental issues and transforming public attitudes.

Earth Day 2023: Theme

The theme for this day is "Invest in Our Planet," as per EarthDay.org (EDO), the global organiser for this event. It highlights the crucial role of investment in driving positive change and addressing the current environmental challenges that we face today.

The theme calls on all individuals, communities, governments and businesses to prioritise and take actions towards protecting and preserving our planet.

Earth Day 2023: Significance

The first success of this day back in 1970 led to the creation of the EPA or Environmental Protection Agency in the United States initiated several key environmental issues such as Endangered Species Act, Clean Air Acr and the Clean Water Act.

Steps for you to save Earth:

The first step to prevent Earth is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Plant trees. Planting more trees is the most caring method for the environment as it will help to reduce carbon emissions.

Travel Smart. Choose to walk, ride a bicycle or take public transport whenever possible, as it will help to reduce gaseous emissions.

Conserve Water by fixing loose taps and leaky pipes.

Interesting facts about Earth:

Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is the four largest terrestrial planet. It is the only planet in the solar system where water can be present in all three states- solid, liquid and gas.

Earth has formed some 4.54 billion years ago. It is much larger than Venus. It is the only planet that supports life. It is the only planet in the solar system that has tectonic plates underneath its surface.

Earth receives between 100 and 30 metric tonnes of cosmic dust every day.

As we all know Earth is made up of more than 7- per cent of water, but the water accounts are actually less than one per cent of Earth's mass.

About 95 per cent of Earth's oceans are still unexplored.

More than 100 people were killed in a military airstrike by Myanmar's Junta on the 11th of April. This is the deadliest attack on civilians by Myanmar's armed forces. Since the military Junta overthrew the democratically elected government in February 2021. Human rights activists see these systematic attacks as part of a pattern to silence the opposition. Schools, health clinics, even entire villages have been bombed to smithereens to quell the resistance. With strict media censorship, it is difficult to ascertain the scale of violence that is unfolding in the country.

Nine people were killed in northern Ecuador on the 11th of April ...in an indiscriminate shootout that has been described as a territorial fight between criminal gangs. Ecuador's Interior minister Juan Zapata said that the attack was due to payment of 'protection money' to a rival gang. The next day, six inmates were found hanging at the notorious Guayaquil prison. Both Guayaquil and Esmeraldas have witnessed a recent surge in violence. A state of emergency had been declared on the 3rd of March by President Guillermo Lasso to crackdown on the criminal gangs. But despite this ... criminal gangs have managed to carry out their killings with almost complete impunity. So why is the government failing to crackdown on the narco-criminal gangs?

Menace of mass shooting has reared its ugly head once again in the United States. At least four were killed and nine wounded at a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky on the 10th of April. The attacker, a 23-year-old employee of the bank, livestreamed the attack over the internet. He was later shot down by the responding law enforcement officials. Bafflingly, Monday's mass shooting in Louisville was the 146th of the year. In addition to this, two more attacks took place over the past week in the United States. Three were injured and shoppers evacuated from a Delaware mall on 8th of April and four people were shot outside a funeral home in the capital, Washington D.C. on 11th of April. What explains these frequent mass shootings?

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan in Damascus on Tuesday in the most significant step yet towards ending Syria's decade-long regional isolation, and at a time of wider rapprochement in the region.

It was the first visit of a top diplomat from Arab powerhouse Saudi Arabia to Damascus since ties were ruptured following Assad's deadly crackdown on protesters in 2011 - violence that escalated into a decade-long civil war.

The meeting discussed steps needed for a political solution to Syria's conflict that would preserve its Arab identity and return it to "its Arab surroundings", Saudi state media said.

Assad said the kingdom's "open and realistic policies" benefited the region, Syria's state news agency reported.

The statements made no mention of an Arab League summit that Riyadh is due to host next month. On Friday, Gulf Arab foreign ministers and their counterparts from Egypt, Iraq and Jordan discussed Syria's possible return to the body at a meeting in Saudi Arabia, but no agreement was reached.

Following the security forces' crackdown on demonstrators in 2011, Syria's membership in the Arab League was suspended and several Gulf states - including Saudi Arabia - began backing rebel groups fighting to oust Assad from power.

Assad, with the help of his main allies Iran and Russia, later regained control over much of Syria. Saudi Arabia has said in recent months that isolating him was not working.

The two sides agreed to resume diplomatic ties, and sources had earlier told Reuters that bin Farhan would travel to Damascus to invite Assad to the Arab League summit.

While some countries like the United Arab Emirates have also mended ties with Damascus, others such as Qatar remain opposed to normalisation and to readmitting Syria to the Arab League in the absence of a political solution to the conflict.

Syria's foreign minister, who recently visited Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Tunisia, has said his country's return to the Arab League would be "almost impossible before correcting bilateral relations".

The thaw in relations between Riyadh and Damascus is part of a wider trend that has seen Saudi Arabia and main rival Iran agree to restore ties in a regional realignment aimed at easing tensions as economic priorities take precedence for Gulf states.

In spite of being ousted as a pathological liar, disgraced Republican politician George Santos has announced that he will once again be running for reelection in 2024. He will be representing the New York district for a second term. The congressman recently admitted to fabricating parts of his resume during his successful bid for a seat in the House of Representatives.

"Since the left is pushing radical agendas, the economy is struggling, and Washington is incapable of solving anything, we need a fighter who knows the district and can serve the people fearlessly and independent of local or national party influence," said Santos in a statement.

"Good is not good enough and I am not shy about getting the job done," he remarked.

According to The Guardian, Santos announced his re-election bid with his typical forthrightness. However, he did not address the various scandals that have surfaced in the US media; lying about being a producer for a Spider-Man musical on Broadway, puppy theft, and falsely claiming to have lost family members in the Holocaust.

Fourteen months into the Russia-Ukraine war and a few months after President Vladimir Putin announced the partial military mobilisation of Russian citizens, Moscow is taking drastic steps to catch those evading the nation's compulsory military draft. As per a report by Russian state-owned news agency TASS, Moscow authorities are using the nation's vast system of facial recognition to track down young men eligible for serving in the military.

"To determine the place of residence of the conscript, video surveillance systems in the city of Moscow are being used," said Moscow's chief enlistment officer Maxim Loktev while talking to TASS.

In 2017, Moscow's Department of Information Technologies announced that more than 3,000 surveillance cameras in the city had been connected to a facial recognition system.

This comes as just last week Putin signed a law tightening restrictions on draft evaders and made it so that call-up papers can be delivered electronically instead of in-person delivery by an enlistment officer or employer.

As per Reuters, facial recognition will make life harder for thousands of 18 to 27-year-olds who every spring and autumn do their best to dodge recruitment. Alongside those called up for service in the Ukraine war, these young men try their best to dodge recruitment officers trying to force them to do their year of compulsory military service.
