Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Tuesday denied expelling leading Venezuelan opposition figure Juan Guaido but accused him of entering the country illegally.

On Monday, Guaido claimed to have been thrown out of Colombia, hours after he arrived in Bogota for a conference on his&nbsp;crisis-torn country hosted by Petro.

"Mr. Guaido was not expelled and it is better that this lie does not appear in politics," wrote Petro on Twitter.

"Mr. Guaido has an agreement to travel to the US. We allowed it for humanitarian reasons despite the illegal entry into the country."

Neither Guaido, recognised in 2019 by more than 50 countries as Venezuela's de facto leader nor Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro were invited to attend Tuesday's conference.

Petro organised it in a bid to restart negotiations between Venezuela's government and the opposition that began in Mexico City in 2021 but reached a deadlock in November.

Venezuela's opposition, backed by many countries including the United States, did not recognise Maduro's 2018 re-election in a vote widely dismissed as fraudulent.

The next year, Washington ramped up sanctions against Caracas, which were first imposed in 2015 over the brutal repression of anti-government protests a year earlier.

Last month, a Venezuelan official said free presidential elections in 2024 were dependent on the lifting of sanctions.

Guaido said in a statement Monday he had walked across the border from Venezuela to Colombia.

"I have just arrived in Colombia, in the same way as millions of Venezuelans before me -- on foot," he said.

"I hope the summit can guarantee that the Maduro regime will return to the negotiation table in Mexico and that a credible timeline can be agreed upon for free and fair elections to be held as a solution for the conflict."

Guaido later posted a video on Twitter that he appeared to have filmed from inside a plane.

"After 60 hours on the road to get to Bogota, escaping the persecution of the dictatorship, defying the Maduro regime, they are taking me out of Colombia," he said.

Colombia's foreign ministry said Guaido, who arrived in Bogota in an "irregular manner", was taken to the capital city's El Dorado airport for a "departure on a commercial airline to the United States during the night."

"The ticket had already been purchased by him," the statement added.

Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva claimed Guaido had slipped over the border without Colombian authorities knowing.

"Here, we have not closed the doors to anyone, this is not a country that expels, it is a country that simply seeks to have its constitution and law complied with," said Leyva.

Under Petro's predecessor, right-wing president Ivan Duque, Colombia had been Guaido's main regional backer, breaking diplomatic ties with Maduro's government.

The left-wing Petro reversed this decision, taking up instead a leading role in a process aimed at ending Venezuela's crisis through negotiations.

Even though he was not officially invited to attend the conference, Guaido had hoped to hold talks with visiting officials on the sidelines of the meeting.

The conference brought together nearly two dozen delegations from countries in Latin America, North America and Europe in an attempt to unfreeze negotiations between the government and opposition.

Guaido has also called for a protest to be held on Bogota's Plaza de Bolivar square, a short walk from the palace where the conference will take place.

Guaido, who led a symbolic interim government from 2019 until January this year, has rejected calls by Colombia's Petro for sanctions against Venezuela to be lifted.&nbsp;

Venezuela's divided opposition disbanded the interim government in January.

In order to remove its citizens from Sudan, where there has been fierce fighting as a result of a power struggle between the Army and the paramilitary force, India has now started Operation Kaveri. About 534 Indians arrived in Port Sudan, and more are on their way, according to Dr. S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs for India. He also gave the assurance that Indian ships and aircraft are prepared to fly Indians back to their country.

An elementary school in the US state of Vermont has issued a circular stating it will no longer be using words such as 'male', 'boy', 'girl' and&nbsp;'female' while teaching fifth-grade students about human reproductive systems and puberty.

Sara Jablonski, principal of the Founders Memorial School sent a letter to parents last week where she announced the removal of the said words and adopting a 'gender-inclusive' language.&nbsp;

As foreign governments move forward with the evacuation of their citizens, civilians continue to escape the capital Khartoum and other conflict areas.

Operation Kaveri | India evacuates 278 civilians from Sudan

Change is slow in Japan. To nudge the country towards legally recognising same-sex marriage, on Sunday crowds of cheering, flag-waving crowds in Tokyo came together for the nation's first full Pride parade in four years. The Pride parade comes ahead of next month's Group of Seven (G7) summit.

Japan as per Reuters is the only G7 industrial power that does not recognise same-sex marriage.&nbsp;

However, growing support from the nation's top business lobby and major companies is putting pressure on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's government and his conservative ruling party to change that.

As per organiser estimates, around 10,000 people marched in Sunday's Pride parade in Tokyo's Shibuya district.

"Japan is really far behind ... We will fight until the entire country has same-sex marriage," said Himama, one of the participants to Reuters.

The traditional nation's constitution refers to marriage as being between "both sexes" and mentions "the equal rights of husband and wife".&nbsp;

For Japan to allow same-sex marriage, an amendment to its civil code would be required.

However, ahead of the summit, some lawmakers have vowed to pass a law promoting "understanding of LGBTQ". Activists and business leaders have called this a good step, but say that it falls short of Japan's last year G7 commitment to ensuring equal rights and anti-discrimination measures for LGBTQ.

Reuters reports that in Japan, the number of municipalities allowing same-sex couples to enter partnership agreements has increased significantly from 26 to around 300 since the last pre-pandemic Pride parade in 2019, covering roughly 65 per cent of the population.&nbsp;

However, these agreements do not grant partners the right to inherit each other's assets or parental rights to each other's children, and hospital visits are not guaranteed. Despite this, it is considered a positive development in a country where LGBTQ+ rights have been slow to progress.&nbsp;

A district court in Japan's Sapporo in March 2021 ruled the nation's ban on same-sex marriages unconstitutional. The Sapporo court argued that laws or regulations that deprive same-sex couples of the legal benefits of marriage are discriminatory and violate Article 14 of the Japanese Constitution. The court also ruled that Article 24 of the Constitution, which defines marriage as "based only on the mutual consent of both sexes", does not prohibit the recognition of same-sex marriages. However, in June 2022, another district court, this one in Osaka, upheld the constitutionality of the ban on same-sex marriage.&nbsp;

Japan as per Reuters is the only G7 industrial power that does not recognise same-sex marriage. However, growing support from the nation's top business lobby and major companies is putting pressure on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's government and his conservative ruling party to change that. As per organiser estimates, around 10,000 people marched in Sunday's Pride parade in Tokyo's Shibuya district. Also read | Indian child rights activist claims same-sex marriage denies kids one parent's love "Japan is really far behind ... We will fight until the entire country has same-sex marriage," said Himama, one of the participants to Reuters. The traditional nation's constitution refers to marriage as being between "both sexes" and mentions "the equal rights of husband and wife". Reuters reports that in Japan, the number of municipalities allowing same-sex couples to enter partnership agreements has increased significantly from 26 to around 300 since the last pre-pandemic Pride parade in 2019, covering roughly 65 per cent of the population. Also read | Are men responsible for 'Motherhood on Ice' a.k.a., women freezing their eggs? However, these agreements do not grant partners the right to inherit each other's assets or parental rights to each other's children, and hospital visits are not guaranteed. Despite this, it is considered a positive development in a country where LGBTQ+ rights have been slow to progress. A district court in Japan's Sapporo in March 2021 ruled the nation's ban on same-sex marriages unconstitutional. The Sapporo court argued that laws or regulations that deprive same-sex couples of the legal benefits of marriage are discriminatory and violate Article 14 of the Japanese Constitution. The court also ruled that Article 24 of the Constitution, which defines marriage as "based only on the mutual consent of both sexes", does not prohibit the recognition of same-sex marriages. However, in June 2022, another district court, this one in Osaka, upheld the constitutionality of the ban on same-sex marriage. Ahead of G7 summit, Japan's LGBTQIA+ community demand legalisation of same-sex marriage

Former United States president Donald Trump's infamous tape boasting about his sexual aggression toward women will be permitted at the forthcoming civil trial in New York. A federal judge ruled that the tape can be used by columnist E Jean Carroll in her lawsuit accusing Trump of rape. The tape, which came to light in 2016, caught Trump in conversation with Billy Bush, an Access Hollywood TV show personality. In it, the businessman, in a very graphic manner, boasts about how celebrities like him can grope women without waiting for consent.

Judge Lewis Kaplan in his order wrote, "In this case, a jury reasonably could find, even from the Access Hollywood tape alone, that Mr Trump admitted in the Access Hollywood tape that he in fact has had contact with women’s genitalia in the past without their consent, or that he has attempted to do so."

The trial in question is scheduled to begin next month. However, it is yet to be specified whether it includes Carroll's defamation claims or will only be about the rape accusations she formally made against Trump.&nbsp;

She made these accusations in November after New York state temporarily changed laws to let adult rape victims sue their abusers over decades-old abuse.

Apart from the tape, the judge said he will also allow jurors to hear statements from two other women who have accused the businessman&nbsp;of sexual misconduct.

In the tape, Trump said that sometimes when he sees beautiful women: "I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait."

He further added, "When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything … grab them by the p***y." The last part of this particular sentence soon went viral, and later Trump had to offer a public apology. He then termed these comments as "locker room banter".

Donald Trump’s ‘grab them by the p***y’ tape to be used in civil rape trial

As India debates whether same-sex marriage should be allowed legally, a child rights activist has come out against the move, and has said that such marriages will infringe upon the rights of the children and would deprive them of "at least one parent."

Talking to IANS, Kumar V Jahgirdar, founder and president of the Child Rights Initiative for Shared Parenting (CRISP) told IANS that "It is natural for any child to have a natural father and mother," and that with the proposed law India is "heading to the creation of a fatherless or motherless society."

He said that in a same-sex marriage, one person will be 'acting' as though they are "a father or mother respectively," but that in fact a child "raised by a same-sex couple is deprived of at least one parent."

He labelled&nbsp;this "a human rights violation that the same-sex marriage movement will never address."

As per Jahgirdar, "this will have a devastating effect on the psychology of the child and is also a violation of child rights as per a UN convention to have two different genders as parents. It is set to become a fashion to speak about LGBTQ rights and nobody is bothered about child rights. The child rights and same sex rights can't go in the same boat."

"I hope the apex court takes this seriously and does not hamper child fundamental rights," he added.

The child rights activist also predicted that "children in same-sex marriage may feel a stigma that may end in drugs or school dropouts or land up in jail as a teenager."

Jahgirdar claimed&nbsp;that the legalisation of same-sex marriages will further add confusion to the Domestic Violence Act that "is meant to protect women against men."

He also said that if the law is passed, rules regarding the custody of the child post-separation or divorce of the parents must be laid out. The custody of children and shared parenting in cases of separation must be ensured, he added.

Indian child rights activist claims same-sex marriage denies kids one parent's love

Donald Trump may soon have another 'title' added to his name, that of a rapist. This week, former advice columnist and author E Jean Carroll will finally get her chance to speak in court about the alleged ordeal she had to bear at the hands of the former US president.

Carroll sued Trump under a recent New York state law that opened a one-year window for adult victims of sexual assault. It allows them to file civil cases after the expiry of the statute of limitations. She alleges that sometime in late 1995 or early 1996, Trump sexually assaulted her in a New York department store.

As per the Guardian, jury selection for the case is set to begin in a Manhattan court on Tuesday.

The former columnist claims that Trump raped her in the dressing room of Bergdorf Goodman, a New York department store. She claims that she was shopping in the store when Trump recognised her and asked her for help in choosing a present for a woman.

The businessman then led her to the lingerie section, where he "grabbed up from the counter a little see-through bodysuit and told me to go try it on," said Carroll.&nbsp;

"And that’s where I got into trouble, because we went into the dressing room and he closed the door and that was it."

As per the lawsuit, Trump initially pinned Carroll against the wall and forcibly kissed her, but "then he pressed her against the wall once more, pulled down her tights, and forcibly raped her for several minutes until she managed to push him off and fled the store."

Carroll claims that following the ordeal she did not file a police complaint because she "was in shock and did not wish to think of herself as a rape victim."

However, in the following days, she confided in two friends: Lisa Birnbach and Carol Martin. Both of them have corroborated Carroll's account and will do so when they testify during the trial.

As per the complaint, Carroll chose to forego going to the police because one of her friends "stressed that Mr Trump was powerful and would ‘bury’ Ms Carroll if she came forward."

However, when the businessman was elected President and the #MeToo movement gained traction, she chose to break her silence. She even wrote a book, 'What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal,' detailing different kinds of abuses by a number of men, including Trump.

In 2019, she also filed a defamation case against Trump denying her accusations, saying she was lying and was only trying to sell her book that should "should be sold in the fiction section."

Trump, however, denies the allegations and claims he has never met the author, although a picture of them along with their spouses exists.

His team is expected to accuse Caroll of a politically motivated attack. This case comes as Trump recently faced the court over another case in which criminal charges were slapped against him.

However, Trump says he will not attend the hearing because he doesn't want to disrupt New York traffic with his motorcade.

Donald Trump may soon carry title of 'rapist'

Bushra Bibi, the wife of ex-prime minister Imran Khan, has warned the Punjab caretaker government's authorities against any operations on her Zaman Park residence during the Eid al-Fitr holidays. The former Pakistan first lady warned caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that their offices will be responsible if an operation is carried out.

As per an Express Tribune report, in a nine-page letter sent to the authorities via her counsel Azhar Siddique, Bushra under articles 9, 14, 15, 16 and 17 of the Constitution, Bushra asked the PM and CM to "refrain the authorities from conducting any operation without adopting the due process of law."&nbsp;

The letter referred to a police raid conducted on March 18 without the presence of a female police officer — against court instructions. Bushra said she is currently working on the "rehabilitation" of Zaman Park, and expressed her apprehension that the police are planning another operation during Eid al-Fitr holidays.

She warned the CM and PM that if any such operation is carried out, it would be a violation of articles 10-A, 4, and 5 of the Constitution. The letter also warned that appropriate actions or remedies would be taken in due course of law, and the PM, CM, and other officers would be held responsible for any violation of fundamental rights.

This letter comes after the Lahore High Court dismissed a petition filed by her to "halt police action" at the residence. In it, the PTI party chief's wife had Bushra's petition had nominated the Ministry of Interior, the Punjab inspector general of Police and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) as respondents.

Imran Khan, too, has expressed his apprehension about such an attack. Owing to his fears, during the hearing of a separate case at the Lahore High Court earlier this week, the court directed the police not to "harass" the former Pakistan PM.

Pakistan: Bushra bibi warns authorities against another operation on Zaman Park during Eid al-Fitr holidays

Japan on Friday approved an abortion pill — its first ever. The pill comes amid calls for progress in women's reproductive rights and gender equality and would serve as an alternative to surgery. The decision is still pending the final approval of the nation's health minister. As per Japan's health ministry, to reach this decision, a secondary panel conducted a review of 12,000 public comments collected online.

The pill called Mefeego pill pack by British drug manufacturer Linepharma as per Japan Times was submitted for approval more than one year back, in December 2021.
&nbsp;&nbsp;
Abortion pills have been around for a while. In many parts of the world, they've been in use for almost three decades or 30 years. While around 80 nations have abortion pills available, Japan, a highly traditional nation, has long been criticised for lagging behind in this aspect.

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-supreme-court-in-a-split-decision-preserves-abortion-drug-access-584958">US Supreme Court preserves abortion drug access amid legal battle</a>

Kumi Tsukahara, director of the Reproductive Health Rights Literacy Institute, said that the decision was a positive step towards putting a spotlight on issues like limited access to safe abortion. However, she warned that the drug could be inaccessible to some.

She suggested that the government should come up with a system to train medical practitioners on how to communicate about abortion without any stigma and help them assess the risks.

"It’s important that they help patients understand what is safe and what is not, enabling them to make their own decision," said Tsukahara.

The pill pack is to be administered at medical institutions. It consists of two oral drugs, two types of drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol and is to be taken within the first nine weeks of pregnancy. The government is yet to create guidelines for physicians and offer the public information on the drug.

Earlier, in January, an initial advisory panel at the health ministry had approved the production and sale of the abortion pill pack.

In Japan, abortion requires spousal consent under the Maternal Health Act; this can limit access to the procedure. This law will also apply to abortion pills, according to the country's health ministry.

Currently, for abortion, Japan allows surgical procedures in the early stages of pregnancy. These, as per Japan Times, cost around cost ¥100,000 to ¥200,000 (around $730 to $1,500).&nbsp;

Mefeego, the abortion pill will not be covered under Japan's national health insurance, and as per estimates may cost more, which as per Tsukuhara is behind its accessibility for all. Despite this, she said the approval can be seen as a first step.&nbsp;

She suggested that the government should come up with a system to train medical practitioners on how to communicate about abortion without any stigma and help them assess the risks. "It’s important that they help patients understand what is safe and what is not, enabling them to make their own decision," said Tsukahara. Currently, for abortion, Japan allows surgical procedures in the early stages of pregnancy. These, as per Japan Times, cost around cost ¥100,000 to ¥200,000 (around $730 to $1,500). Mefeego, the abortion pill will not be covered under Japan's national health insurance, and as per estimates may cost more, which as per Tsukuhara is behind its accessibility for all. Despite this, she said the approval can be seen as a first step. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Sri Lanka, a series of historic paintings were unveiled by the Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, Meenakshi Lekhi. The paintings were presented by the Sri Lankan High Commissioner, Milinda Moragoda, and depicted the arrival of King Ashoka’s son, Mahendra, and his daughter, Sangamitra, to Sri Lanka. The High Commissioner was accompanied by a group of senior monks from Sri Lanka, led by the Most Venerable Waskaduwe Mahindawansa Mahanayake Thero. Abhijit Halder, Director General of the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) was also present on the occasion.

During the event, Minister Lekhi highlighted the close historical, cultural, and traditional relationship between India and Sri Lanka, particularly in the context of the Buddhist connection. She emphasised the importance of strengthening this relationship further for future generations over centuries. Minister Lekhi said that the "paintings have been presented by monks who have travelled all the way from Sri Lanka. They brought two&nbsp;paintings which are replicas of two original paintings available in a temple near Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo."

The Sri Lankan delegation was in Delhi to take part in the global Buddhist Summit 2023, organised by the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) and the Ministry of Culture. The delegation expressed elation over the Minister's decision to do something more concrete on the Buddhist network between Sri Lanka and India in the coming months and years.

The presence of the Sri Lankan Buddhist monks was significant, given the deep historical and cultural connections between Buddhism and both India and Sri Lanka. The paintings presented by the Sri Lankan High Commissioner served as a poignant reminder of the longstanding ties between the two nations, cemented over the years through shared culture and history.

The two murals, which were painted by the eminent Sri Lankan painter Solias Mendis in the Kelaniya Rajamaha Vihara, depict the commencement of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE. The murals depict the arrival of Arahat Bhikkhu Mahinda, son of Emperor Ashoka, delivering the message of the Buddha to King Devanampiyatissa of Sri Lanka upon arriving on the island. The second mural depicts the arrival of Theri Bhikkhuni Sanghamitta, the daughter of the emperor, bearing the sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi tree under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment.

Hassan Diab, a 69-year-old sociology professor has been sentenced to life in prison for the 1980 Paris synagogue bombing. The ruling by a Paris court was made in absentia and follows the prosecutors' request for the maximum possible punishment. The decision as per AFP was met with silence in the court.

Diab, a Lebanese-Canadian sociology professor, and a resident of Canada, speaking to the press in Ottawa called the verdict "not fair" and labelled it "Kafkaesque" i.e., something that has&nbsp;"a nightmarishly complex, bizarre, or illogical quality"&nbsp;— incidentally the same phrase was used by former UK Deputy PM Dominic Raab, who was recently forced to resign following allegations of bullying.

"We'd hoped reason would prevail," Diab said as per AFP. He also said that he expects Canada not to send him back to France to serve the sentence.

Prosecutors, however, in their closing arguments said there was "no possible doubt" that Diab — who happens to be the only suspect — was behind the attack.

The 1980 Paris Synagogue attack was the first deadly attack against a Jewish target on French soil since World War II. It claimed the lives of four people and injured 46 others.

On October 3, 1980, explosives placed on a motorcycle detonated close to a synagogue on the Rue Copernic in Paris's chic 16th district.

Police suspected a splinter group of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine for the attack, but no organisation claimed responsibility. In 1999, French intelligence accused&nbsp;Diab of making the&nbsp;10-kilogramme (22-pound) bomb&nbsp;used in the attack. Evidence included his likeness to police sketches, handwriting analysis confirming him as the buyer of the bike used in attack, and a passport with his name and entry/exit stamps from Spain, where the attack plan is believed to have originated.

However, in the subsequent investigation, judges were unable to prove Diab's guilt, and in 2018 he was released. He left France for Canada, a free man. Three years later, this decision was overturned and a French court ordered that he must stand trial on charges of murder, attempted murder and destruction of property in connection with a terrorist enterprise.
