Bangladesh may have lost the second ODI against New Zealand but their two returning batsman Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah played a decent knock of 44 and 49, respectively. The knock, although scratchy, should put some faith in dressing room come World Cup next month.

Tamim, who made headlines in July after retiring and then making a U-turn a day after, hadn't batted since then due to a back injury. The batsman said after that match that he was nervous while batting.

"I was nervous today (match day). I will be lying if I said it was just another game," he said. "Whatever has happened in the last couple of months, I had nerves going out to bat. But after the first over, it came down. It was nice to hit the balls again. I think it was good to be out there but there's certainly still a lot of discomfort in my back. The physios are trying to overcome it."

Speaking about Mahmudullah, who hasn't been in the team since March, indicating a move on from the batsman by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Tamim said the batsman was excellent.

"I thought he was excellent. I was in a small partnership with him. His intent looked really good. I didn't feel he was out for six or seven months. He looked good. He fielded well," said Iqbal.

Talking about the match, Tamim said that the target was achievable and that the batsmen got out on not very good deliveries.

"This run chase was gettable on this wicket. I think we could have restricted them around 210-215. But this was a good wicket. I don't think we got out to really good deliveries.

"We have to look into (losing four wickets early) very seriously going into the World Cup. We can't win a lot of games if we lose four or five wickets quickly. We lost early wickets but there were good patches today. But to win any game, you have to stop this (collapse). We have to look to minimise back-to-back wickets. The coach and captain aren't the only ones in charge of this, the responsibility is among all of us," said Tamim.

With first match being washed away and loss in second ODI, Bangladesh now trail 0-1 in the three-match series with third ODI scheduled for September 26.

Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal says 'he was nervous while going to bat' against New Zealand in second ODI

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is considering introducing a stringent proposal that would ban the next generation from ever being able to buy cigarettes, a report in The Guardian has claimed.&nbsp;

Sunak, who is said to "hate" smoking, has shown interest in bringing a law, much like the one imposed by the New Zealand government under former prime minister Jacinda Ardern last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Under the&nbsp;first-of-its-kind anti-smoking laws passed by the Ardern regime, those aged 14 and younger cannot buy&nbsp;cigarettes ever in New Zealand, thereby outlawing the deadly habit for the next generation entirely.&nbsp;

According to The Times, Downing Street has already instructed civil servants&nbsp;reporting to Professor Sir Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer, to chalk up a proposal for tobacco control that seeks to implement Sunak's vision.

“Sunak is personally very exercised about smoking.&nbsp;Both from the point of view of the impact on young people and the NHS," a government source was quoted as saying by the publication.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Notably, last year, a government-ordered review proposed a host of measures to&nbsp;hit a target of having fewer than five&nbsp;per cent of people smoking by 2030, down from 14 per cent.

"We want to encourage more people to quit and meet our ambition to be smoke-free by 2030, which is why we have already taken steps to reduce smoking rates," a government spokesman said.&nbsp;

Former Barnardo’s chief Javed Khan who proposed the idea, also batted for a ban on&nbsp; smoking in outdoor spaces to create a “social norm” and a prohibition on some council housing tenants from smoking in their homes. However, former PM Boris Johnson rejected the proposals&nbsp;

Apart from cigarette smoking, Sunak is also&nbsp;considering banning disposable vapes, cartoon packaging and flavours that appeal to children.

<h2>What does the law say in New Zealand?</h2>

The new laws introduced in New Zealand that kicked in 2023 include a complete ban on selling tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009 and implementing an annually rising smoking age.

The ban which will remain in place for a person’s whole life is also punishable by a fine of up to NZ$150,000 ($ 95,910). These laws are introduced in a bid to make New Zealand “smoke-free” by 2025.

Furthermore, the law also moves to reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in smoked tobacco products as well as minimising the number of tobacco-selling retailers in the country by 90 per cent. However, these restrictions do not apply to vapes which reportedly some New Zealanders have switched to after the ban.

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck the South Island of New Zealand around 0914 local time (2114GMT)&nbsp;on Wednesday (September 20), according to&nbsp;news agency AFP.&nbsp;

The epicentre of the quake has been reported to be 11 kilometres below the Earth's surface, 124 kilometres west of Christchurch. Preliminary reports suggest there is no tsunami warning and no reports of damage on the New Zealand mainland.&nbsp;

According to the Geonet website, around 15,000 people reported to have felt the earthquake.&nbsp;

"Felt that one in Dunedin," said one user on X (formerly known as Twitter), while another added: "That was way too close for comfort! Peel Forest pretty close to epicentre- whole house shook, cupboard doors swung open, flashbacks to the ChCh quakes."

"There's no damage here, but I thought it was thunder for a start. The house lifted up for a bit," Sarah Hussey, a farmer close to the epicentre described the earthquake, saying it was the strongest she remembered.&nbsp;

In a big blow to New Zealand's squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, veteran fast bowler Tim Southee has suffered a thumb injury, putting his participation in the quadrennial tournament in doubt. Southee suffered the injury during the last ODI of four-match series against England on September 16 at Lord's.

Southee was fielding at first slip when he suffered the blow to thumb while trying to take a catch to dismiss Joe Root. He immediately let his discomfort known and was escorted off the field with a medical team member. He didn't take any further part in the game and Trent Boult replaced him as a substitute fielder in the match.&nbsp;

The pacer will now head home after initial scans showed that he fractured and dislocated a bone in his right thumb. Speaking about the injury, New Zealand skipper Tom Latham said that more will be revealed about the extent of Southee's injury in coming days.

"It's not ideal for Timmy," Latham said. "He's a massive leader amongst the group and obviously he'll be assessed over the coming days when we get back home to see how bad it is, but we do have a bit of time leading into those first couple of games, so we'll know more over the next couple of days."

"He's a pretty resilient character, so I'm sure he'll be doing all he can to be on the plane, ready for that first game. But it's hard to know at this point what the timeframe will be. Once he gets home and has a few more scans, we'll know the extent of what's going on."

The Kiwis, meanwhile, lost the game by 100 runs and conceded the series 3-1 to England. They next play Bangladesh in a three-ODI series starting from September 21 before facing England in World Cup opener on October 5 in Ahmedabad.

Tim Southee's ODI World Cup participation under doubt after suffering injury in Lord's ODI against England

A climber who plunged 600 metres (nearly 2,000 feet) down from the side of one of New Zealand’s most dangerous mountains, “miraculously” survived and only sustained minor injuries after landing on snow. New Zealand police&nbsp;on Monday (September 11) said that the man fell from Mount Taranaki on the North Island and was saved by the recent spring weather which softened the snow and broke his fall.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened?</h2>

In a statement, the police said that the man, who was not identified, was part of a group of climbers approaching the snow-capped summit of Mount Taranaki, on Saturday (Sep 9) when he lost his footing and slipped.&nbsp;

“Having watched their fellow climber slide down the mountain and out of view, another member of the group climbed down to try and locate them,” it added.&nbsp;

The police were alerted about the incident on Saturday around 12:00 pm (local time). The climber had sustained minor injuries during his fall, said senior constable Vaughan Smith, adding that he had lost his ice axe and crampons during the fall.&nbsp;

“Thanks to recent spring weather, the ice had softened, and the snow caught the climber’s fall. He is exceptionally lucky to be alive,” said the police.

There have been multiple deaths on Mount Taranaki over the years. The climber on Saturday slipped in the same area where two other mountaineers fell to their deaths back in 2021. Some five years prior to that incident, a French climber died after plummeting from the same peak.&nbsp;

The New Zealand police also warned and said that climbing Mount Taranaki requires “experience, knowledge and properly fitted and correct equipment.” It added, “Failing to be properly equipped could result in a very different ending to Saturday’s story.”&nbsp;

McDowell’s report came after the initial investigation conducted by Te Whatu Ora Auckland claimed it had not failed to “exercise reasonable skill and care” towards the patient and claimed that her findings were influenced by “hindsight and outcome bias”.&nbsp;

However, McDowell found that the Te Whatu Ora Auckland is in breach of the code of patient rights. “There is substantial precedent to infer that when a foreign object is left inside a patient during an operation, the care fell below the appropriate standard,” she stated in the report. “It is a ‘never’ event”.&nbsp;

An AWR, a device used to draw back the edges of a wound during surgery, was left in her abdomen following her C-section, said the report. One of the nurses present during the operation told the commission that a count of all surgical instruments used in the procedure did not include the AWR.&nbsp;

But this could be because the AWR doesn’t go into the wound completely, unlike other tools, said the nurse. It was also found that a ‘large’ AWR was used during surgery but the surgeon found the tool insufficient and replaced it with an ‘extra-large’ AWR.&nbsp;

While the surgical instrument is typically removed after the incision is closed and the skin sutured, in this case, it was forgotten.&nbsp;

An extra large AWR described as “about the size of a dinner plate,” is designed to retract incisions up to 17 centimetres in diameter. The tool was removed from the patient’s abdomen, in 2021, around 18 months after the initial procedure after multiple appointments with her doctor.

Reportedly, on one occasion, the pain was so severe that she visited the emergency department at the hospital. The tool was only discovered after the patient underwent an abdominal CT scan since it was invisible to an X-ray.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Serious deviation’</h2>

McDowell acknowledged that the theatre staff involved was genuinely concerned and apologetic after listening to what the woman had gone through, but her scathing report was directed at Te Whatu Ora’s claims.

“Te Whatu Ora pointed to a lack of expert evidence to support the conclusion that [the code] had been breached and referenced known error rates,” McDowell wrote.&nbsp;

While she accepted that Te Whatu Ora was not aware of the risk an AWR could pose when surgically retained, McDowell had “little difficulty concluding that the retention of a surgical instrument in a person’s body falls well below the expected standard of care.”

“I do not consider it necessary to have specific expert advice to assist me in reaching that conclusion,” said McDowell calling the breach a “serious deviation” from the standard of care.&nbsp;

A woman in New Zealand who suffered chronic pain for over a year after undergoing a caesarean section was found to have a surgical instrument the size of a dinner plate left inside her abdomen. The incident has since resulted in a scathing report by the country’s health watchdog following an investigation. The report by New Zealand’s Health and Disability Commissioner Morag McDowell was published on Monday (September 4), with this being the second case of the same surgical tool being left in a patient’s body in just two years. ‘A never event’ An Alexis wound retractor, or AWR, was left inside the patient, a woman in her 20s, who had undergone a scheduled C-section at an Auckland city hospital in 2020. New Zealand: Surgical tool ‘size of dinner plate’ left in woman’s body after operation

Wildlife observers in New Zealand are celebrating a major conservation victory. The Takahē bird, which was formally declared extinct in 1898, is gradually increasing its presence in the country’s woods.

Takahē bird is hailed as one of the world’s rarest creatures. Their population nosedived during the late 1800s when European settlers came along with their animal companions— stoats, cats, ferrets and rats.&nbsp;

By the end of the 19th century, they were declared extinct, but only until they resurfaced in 1948. Since then, the government along with community tribes and conservationists has undertaken a slew of measures to help them reclaim their past habitat.

<h2>Conservation efforts</h2>

At first, conservationists collected and artificially nurtured the eggs to prevent them from being consumed by predators. As the eggs hatched, workers adorned with sock puppets resembling the distinctive red beaks of the birds cared for and raised the chicks.&nbsp;

Later on, the Department of Conservation (DOC) gradually introduced the birds to select island sanctuaries and national parks. This endeavour involved substantial investments in trapping and pest eradication to safeguard the bird population.

Thanks to these efforts, their numbers currently stand at approximately 500, with an annual growth rate of about 8 per cent.&nbsp;

<h2>Birds being gradually reintroduced to the wild</h2>

Just last week, eighteen of these birds were reintroduced to the Lake Whakatipu Waimāori valley in New Zealand's South Island, a mountainous region they hadn't visited for nearly a century.

Should the recently released pairs adapt successfully to their new environment, the plan is to release an additional seven birds in October and potentially up to 10 young takahē in the early months of next year.

“After decades of hard work to increase the takahē population, it’s rewarding to now be focusing on establishing more wild populations, but it comes with challenges – establishing new wild native species populations can take time and success is not guaranteed,” DOC Takahē recovery operations manager Deidre Vercoe was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

The Women's World Cup gave the sport a huge boost in co-hosts New Zealand where new attendance records were set, the head of the country's football governing body said. Spain's thrilling 2-1 semi-final victory over Sweden on Tuesday was watched by a sellout crowd of 43,217 at Auckland's Eden Park -- equalling the highest attendance for a men's or women's match in New Zealand.

With the remaining Women's World Cup games taking place in Australia, football officials reported more than 700,000 fans attended the 29 matches staged in New Zealand. "This tournament has seen a colossal change in the way football, and particularly women's football, is seen in New Zealand," said Andrew Pragnell, chief executive of New Zealand Football.

The attendance record was first broken on the opening day of the tournament when 42,137 saw New Zealand beat Norway in Auckland.&nbsp;It was surpassed when Spain's last-16 win over Switzerland and Sweden's quarter-final victory over Japan both drew capacity crowds of 43,217 to Eden Park, a figure matched at Tuesday's semi-final.

"From the historic opening game at Eden Park which saw the Football Ferns beat Norway, this tournament has set a new standard for the FIFA Women’s World Cup," said Pragnell. The country also hosted women's cricket and rugby World Cups in 2022 proving, Pragnell said, that New Zealand can "deliver world-class major events".

The second semi-final will take place on Wednesday (August 16) between arch-rivals England and Australia in Sydney, Australia. Before the clash, Aussie coach&nbsp;Tony Gustavsson stated of expecting a close match but is banking on the crowd support.&nbsp;"If you look at rankings they're favourites, if you look at where their players play, they have starting players in top clubs in top leagues all over the world," Gustavsson told reporters on Tuesday.

He added, "Not just the starting 11, down to 15, 16. We have bench players in those teams. We have players playing in mid-table teams in Sweden. So if you look at all that and you look at resources, financially, obviously they are massive favourites going into this game. But the one thing that we have that they don't have is the support and belief from the fans. That in itself is going to be massive tomorrow."

FIFA Women's World Cup creates history, sets crowd records in New Zealand

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) said on Friday (August 11) that it was aware of intelligence activity linked to China in and against New Zealand and the Pacific region.

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) said on Friday (August 11) that it was aware of intelligence activity linked to China in and against New Zealand and the Pacific region. In its report "New Zealand's Security Threat Environment 2023," the NZSIS said this was a complex intelligence concern for Wellington. The intelligence service's report was made public for the first time as part of a government shift to better inform New Zealanders about risks the country is facing, and comes two months before a general election where foreign policy is being pushed into the electoral spotlight. "This report highlights the activities of three states in particular: the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia," the report said. "NZSIS has detected interference activity from several foreign states. Most notable is the continued targeting of New Zealand’s diverse ethnic Chinese communities. We see these activities carried out by groups and individuals linked to the intelligence arm of the People’s Republic of China (PRC)," it added. 'International security environment more challenging' The NZSIS report further said that the international security environment in which New Zealand is operating is now more challenging and less predictable than has been the case in recent decades. "Strategic competition is contributing to this unpredictability, evident in both a growing assertiveness from China and in international reactions to that assertiveness, as well as through largescale conflicts such as Russia’s illegal military invasion of Ukraine," it added. 'Strongly dissatisfied with report': China The Chinese embassy in New Zealand said that it was strongly dissatisfied with the NZSIS report, adding Beijing was conducting normal exchanges with overseas Chinese citizens by international law. In a statement, the embassy said China hoped that relevant countries could create an open, inclusive and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese citizens overseas and local Chinese. The Russian embassy, meanwhile, criticised New Zealand's "interference" in Russian internal affairs by commenting publicly on the imprisonment of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. Aware of China-linked intelligence activity in New Zealand: Wellington

The Labour government in New Zealand said on Friday (August 11) that it plans to make it compulsory for large companies to publish gender pay gap data. The step has been taken in an effort to ensure that woman in the country get equal pay as that of men.

The government is due to face election in October this year. Currently, the Labour government is trailing in opinion polls. The elections will take place on October 14. In order for the gender pay gap policy to be legislated, the government will need re-election or gain bipartisan support after the polls.

The government has said that it initially plans to require 900 public sector companies to report their gender pay gap. These companies employ more than 250 employees each. After four years, the government plans to make the rule compulsory for all companies that have more than 100 workers in their employment.

“Countries we compare ourselves to including Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom have already successfully introduced gender pay gap reporting. We need to ensure we’re staying in line with international standards,” said Minister for Women Jan Tinetti.

“The reality is that women have different experiences in the workplace than men, and change is needed. Requiring companies to publish their gender pay gap will encourage them to address the drivers of those gaps and increase transparency for workers,” she added.

According to the data from New Zealand's Public Service Commission, the gender pay gap in the public service was 7.7 per cent as of June 30.

The governing Labour Party is currently lagging in opinion polls. A poll by the Taxpayers’ Union and Curia Market Research released on Thursday finds that the centre-right parties of National and ACT will have enough support to form a government.

CNN quoted a 2021 household survey done by New Zealand government and said that for each dollar&nbsp;a non-ethnic New Zealander male professional earned, his female counterpart earned 89 cents. The inequality is more in certain ethnic minorities. In case of ethnic Maori population, the women earned 81 cents to the dollar a man earned. In Pasifika population, women on an average earned 75 cents as compared to a dollar a man for the same community earned.

The New Zealand government is reportedly going to consult the public on the legislation. It hopes to seek feedback on reporting pay gaps in employees from ethnic communities.

According to CNN, the legislation is yet to be drafted. Considering there are only three weeks of parliament session remaining until general election in October, it is likely that a new government will have to take decision on implementation of the provisions.

New Zealand government to make companies publish gender pay gap data

A New Zealand supermarket chain created an AI-powered app to generate meal plans. The app produced some bizarre dishes – recommending customers recipes for “poison bread sandwiches” and "mosquito-repellent roast potatoes". Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: AI's bizarre recipe suggestions

Cooking can be a relaxing activity, but also a task. Sometimes deciding what to cook, especially with a limited pantry, can be the toughest thing you can do. To help people in such a scenario, a New Zealand supermarket has come up with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based app.

The app called 'Savey Meal-bot' which was created by supermarket chain Pak 'n' Save asks users to enter in the various ingredients they have and auto-generates a meal plan or a recipe. But, the scenario has proven to be too good. The AI is suggesting people the weirdest, downright poisonous recipes.

<h2>Move over Cinderella's poison apple</h2>

You've heard of poison apples, but this is a new one. The app is suggesting out of the box recipes like 'Poison bread sandwiches' and 'mosquito repellent roast potatoes'.&nbsp;

These "unique" experiments came up when customers began experimenting with entering a wide range of household shopping products into the apps.&nbsp;

One recipe that was dubbed "aromatic water mix" was the recipe for chlorine gas, which, as per the bot, was "the perfect non-alcoholic beverage to quench your thirst and refresh your senses."

It recommended that the users should "Serve chilled and enjoy the refreshing fragrance."

Chlorine gas when inhaled can cause lung damage or death.

<h2>How it came to light</h2>

The curious bot and its weird recipes were shared on X, formerly Twitter. This prompted other New Zealanders to experiment and share their own results on social media.

One shared a recommendation for a bleach "fresh breath" mocktail, ant-poison and even glue sandwiches, "bleach-infused rice surprise" and "menthol bliss" a turpentine-flavoured French toast.

<h2>What the supermarket said</h2>

A supermarket spokesperson chalked it up to a "small minority" using the bot inappropriately. He said they were disappointed to see "a small minority have tried to use the tool inappropriately and not for its intended purpose."

In a statement, the supermarket said it was "fine-tuning" the controls of the bot to ensure that it was safe and useful for the users.

In a warning notice, they warned users that the recipes were "not reviewed by a human being" and that the company cannot guarantee "that any recipe will be a complete or balanced meal, or suitable for consumption."

"You must use your own judgement before relying on or making any recipe produced by Savey Meal-bot," said the company.

Move over Cinderella's poison apple You've heard of poison apples, but this is a new one. The app is suggesting out of the box recipes like 'Poison bread sandwiches' and 'mosquito repellent roast potatoes'. Also read | Scientists identify 248 million-year-old lizard-like creature that survived what dinosaurs couldn't These "unique" experiments came up when customers began experimenting with entering a wide range of household shopping products into the apps. One recipe that was dubbed "aromatic water mix" was the recipe for chlorine gas, which, as per the bot, was "the perfect non-alcoholic beverage to quench your thirst and refresh your senses." It recommended that the users should "Serve chilled and enjoy the refreshing fragrance." Chlorine gas when inhaled can cause lung damage or death. How it came to light The curious bot and its weird recipes were shared on X, formerly Twitter. This prompted other New Zealanders to experiment and share their own results on social media. Also read | Pope points out 'disruptive possibilities' of Artificial Intelligence, calls for responsible use of technology One shared a recommendation for a bleach "fresh breath" mocktail, ant-poison and even glue sandwiches, "bleach-infused rice surprise" and "menthol bliss" a turpentine-flavoured French toast. What the supermarket said A supermarket spokesperson chalked it up to a "small minority" using the bot inappropriately. He said they were disappointed to see "a small minority have tried to use the tool inappropriately and not for its intended purpose." In a statement, the supermarket said it was "fine-tuning" the controls of the bot to ensure that it was safe and useful for the users. In a warning notice, they warned users that the recipes were "not reviewed by a human being" and that the company cannot guarantee "that any recipe will be a complete or balanced meal, or suitable for consumption." "You must use your own judgement before relying on or making any recipe produced by Savey Meal-bot," said the company. New Zealand recall veteran pacer Trent Boult for England tour ahead of ICC ODI World Cup

As China strives to increase its influence in the Pacific, New Zealand announced it will invest in a "combat-capable" military force and defend its interests there.

New Zealand to boost defence expenditure to protect interests in Pacific

New Zealand is boosting its defence capabilities in a bid to protect its interests in the Pacific as China seeks to assert more influence in the region. Releasing policy documents in Wellington that set out the government's new defence schools and strategies Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Defence Minister Andrew Little said that New Zealand is facing more geostrategic challenges than it has in decades.

New Zealand to boost its defence and security

New Zealand's National Party, led by Christopher Luxon, has unveiled an audacious proposal to construct a NZ$24 billion (US$14.6 billion) road network, a cornerstone of its election manifesto aiming to revitalise public infrastructure.

However, the initiative has drawn both admiration and skepticism, with particular focus on the funding source — China.

Luxon remains undeterred by criticism, arguing that the project could pave the way for a modernised transportation system and economic upswing, reported the South China Morning Post.

<h2>Pioneering a grand vision: NZ's multibillion-dollar road network</h2>

In a strategic bid to address mounting traffic congestion and bolster economic prospects, the National Party has championed a transformative vision to construct an extensive network of expressways and transport systems.

The proposition, embedded within their election manifesto, promises to allocate NZ$24 billion to this ambitious endeavour.

Christopher Luxon, the driving force behind this proposal, envisions a well-connected nation with enhanced trade and mobility.

<h2>Chinese investment: A double-edged sword?</h2>

Luxon's unwavering stance on seeking foreign investment, particularly from China, has raised eyebrows among critics who fear potential debt dependence.

Luxon argues that numerous sovereign wealth funds have expressed keen interest, and he remains open to Chinese financing.

He stresses the urgency of modernising New Zealand's infrastructure and maintains that a robust road network is vital for the nation's growth.

<h2>The national infrastructure agency's role</h2>

Central to the National Party's strategy is the establishment of the National Infrastructure Agency, tasked with evaluating partnerships and financing options for these grand projects.

The question of employing Chinese labour to construct the road network remains on the table, with Luxon deferring the decision to this agency.

He asserts that collaboration and prudent financial choices will be paramount to the success of these endeavours.

<h2>Luxon's global investor outreach</h2>

Christopher Luxon's outreach to potential investors spans beyond China, encompassing Canadian and Australian pension funds.

Reports indicate his proactive engagement in seeking diverse sources of funding for the envisioned infrastructure overhaul.

This approach aims to bolster the credibility and sustainability of the financing model.

<h2>Political friction and public reaction</h2>

Luxon's bold vision has sparked spirited debates within New Zealand's political landscape.

Prime Minister and Labour leader Chris Hipkins dismissed the proposal as fantastical and criticised its financial feasibility. Meanwhile, public opinion remains divided, with social media platforms echoing concerns about foreign influence, debt vulnerability, and potential long-term consequences.

New Zealand opposition party dismisses concerns of Chinese debt trap risk in road network plan

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday (July 27) that New Zealand can engage with the AUKUS weapons development and procurement project anytime it wants as the door was open.&nbsp;

Blinken has raised the possibility of New Zealand and other partners engaging or joining this elite grouping. A pack which angered China that termed it 'destabilising' for the region.&nbsp;

"The door's very much open for New Zealand and other partners to engage as they see appropriate going forward," Blinken said.&nbsp;

"We've long worked together on the most important national security issues. And so as we further develop AUKUS, as I said, the door is open to engagement," he added.&nbsp;

Blinken's notable remark came a day after New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said Wellington was "open to conversations" about a possible role in AUKUS.&nbsp;

New Zealand has been nuclear-free since the mid-1980s and Hipkins said that they would consider it so long as it did not relate to the development of nuclear-powered submarines.&nbsp;

Instead, officials appear to be eying cooperation on defence technologies such as cyber, artificial intelligence and hypersonic weapons, which fall under the AUKUS agreement's so-called "pillar two".

Blinken was in New Zealand for just over a day. His arrival in the island nation was part of a three-country visit to the Pacific.&nbsp;

He met with New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta and will further travel to Australia on Thursday where the largest Australia-U.S. military exercise is due to begin.

Recently, accusations were made against New Zealand of giving importance to its trading relationship with China ahead of its friendships with fellow Five Eyes spy group members the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia.&nbsp;

At least two people were killed and six others wounded in central Auckland on the 20th of July. The attack by a 24-year-old gunman took place at a construction site barely hours ahead of the opening match of FIFA women's world cup. The attacker, believed to have a history of mental health issues, was shot dead by law enforcement officials. Incidents of gun violence are rare in New Zealand especially after sweeping gun laws were introduced after the 2019 Christchurch mosque massacre. Mohammed Saleh brings you this report.

New Zealand's justice minister resigned on Monday (July 24) after police filed charges related to driving over the legal alcohol limit. The now-former minister reportedly went over the legal alcohol limit and crashed into a parked car in Wellington.

The incident involving Kiri Allan is the latest in a series of embarrassments and scandals involving government ministers ahead of national elections three months later.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said Allan was involved in the crash soon after 9 pm Sunday in Wellington. Allan was also detained at the central police station for about four hours, Associated Press reported.

Prime Minister Hipkins added that Allan’s breath test showed she was over the legal alcohol limit.

Allen, however, was not charged with drunk driving. Police said they issued Allan an infringement notice in relation to the breath test.

If found guilty, Allan could face a fine and a suspension of her driver’s license.

Once considered a rising politician of the Labour Party, Allan had recently taken time off for her mental health after a publicised split with her partner.

Hipkins said he spoke with Allan on Monday morning and told her he thought she was not in a fit state to remain a minister.

She agreed and resigned from her ministerial roles, Hipkins said.&nbsp;

New Zealand justice minister resigns after crashing car under influence of alcohol

Wallabies coach Eddie Jones admitted on Saturday that his flailing team were "massive underdogs" against the "red hot" All Blacks next weekend, but said it could work in their favour.

Australia head into the Melbourne Cricket Ground clash in a hole after consecutive Rugby Championship defeats to South Africa and Argentina, leaving the former England boss with back-to-back losses since taking over.

In contrast, New Zealand romped to victory over the Springboks and Pumas, making them heavy favourites to win again as they build up to the World Cup in France.

"In this situation this week we're massive underdogs," Jones said on a Zoom call from Australia's training base in Queensland. "But that creates an opportunity for us.

"We know that if we can put pressure on a&nbsp;team that is red hot favourites, sometimes that pressure can turn into increased pressure on them and stress in the team, and that's our aim.

"If you look at Australia at the moment, probably no one outside our immediate squad thinks we've got a chance of winning, which sometimes can drive a bit more closeness within the team, a bit more purpose about what we're doing," he added.

Jones was brought in to replace the axed Dave Rennie this year after the team lost nine of 13 internationals last season.

But it has been a rocky start to his second stint in the job, crashing 34-31 to Argentina on the back of a 43-12 thrashing by world champions South Africa.

He admitted they&nbsp;had fallen short of expectations, but suggested it could prove beneficial for the September-October World Cup, as the "teething problems" had been identified now.

"I've got no doubt we're not as clear about how we want to play as we want to be. The only problem I see with that is we're not performing as we'd like to perform," he said.

"But in a build-up to a World Cup these sorts of teething problems are sometimes the best problems to have.&nbsp;

"And sometimes you find out more about your team in these situations than you do when you think things are going along swimmingly. And they're not getting along swimmingly."

Jones is still experimenting, trying to determine the best squad to take to the World Cup, with backs Tom Wright and Reece Hodge among those dropped for the All Blacks match.

He noted that the team lacked alignment in defence and attack around the breakdown against Argentina.

"That's part of the issues we've got at the moment," he said. "It's an understanding issue -– understanding what we need, what decisions need to be made by the players."

Co-captain Michael Hooper missed the Pumas match with a calf injury and is racing the clock to be fit.

"Calf injuries, we tend to be more careful with their rehab than other injuries so medical staff are being pretty careful with him," said the coach.

"And sometimes you find out more about your team in these situations than you do when you think things are going along swimmingly. And they're not getting along swimmingly." Jones is still experimenting, trying to determine the best squad to take to the World Cup, with backs Tom Wright and Reece Hodge among those dropped for the All Blacks match. He noted that the team lacked alignment in defence and attack around the breakdown against Argentina. "That's part of the issues we've got at the moment," he said. "It's an understanding issue -– understanding what we need, what decisions need to be made by the players." Co-captain Michael Hooper missed the Pumas match with a calf injury and is racing the clock to be fit. "Calf injuries, we tend to be more careful with their rehab than other injuries so medical staff are being pretty careful with him," said the coach. Hakyung Lee, the South Korean woman, who was accused of murdering her two children, can be named for the first time. The bodies of the children were found in abandoned suitcases last year. The exact year of the murders is not known.

In a report published by Radio New Zealand (RNZ), it was mentioned that the 42-year-old has lost the fight to keep her name secret and had pleaded not guilty to two charges of murder.

Today, the Court of Appeal denied Lee's request for name suppression to be extended until the end of the trial, which is set to commence in April of next year.&nbsp;

While concluding, Justice Cull stated that the evidence did not meet the standard required to prove that publication would cause Lee great hardship or jeopardise her safety.&nbsp;

The bodies of the two young children, aged five to ten years, were discovered in suitcases&nbsp;in Auckland, New Zealand, in August 2022. The woman, the mother of the children, was arrested and will stand trial in 2024.&nbsp;

The bodies were hidden in suitcases for several years before an Auckland family purchased the bags in an online auction held by a storage facility. They carried the baggage home in early August before discovering them and notifying authorities.&nbsp;

NZ Herald reported that Lee's lawyer, Chris Wilkinson-Smith, argued that the publication of her name could result in extreme hardship or endanger the woman's safety, and could also affect her ability to engage in court proceedings or medical assessments.&nbsp;

However, the news report mentioned that Crown Prosecutor Gareth Kayes and lawyer for NZME Tania Goatley disagreed. They have submitted that there was no evidence that publication sufficiently heightened the defendant's risk profile.&nbsp;

Criminal trial over White Island volcanic eruption starts in New Zealand

On Tuesday (July 12), a trial opened over New Zealand's 2019 White Island volcanic eruption. The eruption and subsequent explosion had engulfed tourists, leading to deaths of 22 people and leaving several others with burns.

nearly 50 tourists, mostly from Australia, were vacationing on White Island, also known as Whakaari, when burning ash and steam exploded from a volcanic vent in December 2019. The accident off the coast of the country's North Island prompted a massive rescue and medical operation.

"This volcano eruption involved a massive explosion," prosecution barrister Kristy McDonald told Auckland District Court.

It resulted in a flow of "burning hot ash, scalding hot sea, poisonous volcanic ashes and rocks projected across the crater floor," she added.

"The pyroclastic current engulfed all those who were on the volcano with estimates of speeds of approximately 60 kilometres per hour," AFP news agency quoted her as saying.

Six parties, including two tour companies and the island's owners, Whakaari Management Limited, have been charged with violation of health and safety regulations that led to the horrific incident. They deny any wrongdoing.

McDonald said the family owners of the island were making around NZ$1 million (US$620,000) a year before disaster struck.&nbsp;

"They profited from every single tourist taken to Whakaari," she told the court.

<h2>Island's management failed to make adequate risk assessments</h2>

McDonald argued that though the island's management denied any wrongdoing, it failed to make necessary risk assessments, provide personal protective equipment or ensure evacuation routes.

"The end result was that tourists and workers went to the crater of an active volcano without being properly advised of the risks," McDonald added.

According to the news agency AFP, the video footage of the incident played in the court showed people trying to flee a cloud of volcanic ash.

In one video clip, the guide spotted the eruption and shouted at the tourists to "move, quick" back to their boat. Some struggled in their desperation to flee.

The charges don't carry the threat of prison time but the parties, if found guilty, could face fines of up to NZ$1.5 million.

The trial is expected to last for several weeks.

On Friday, another six firms already pleaded guilty to health and safety charges, including three helicopter tour operators that entered 11th-hour pleas.

Trial opens over New Zealand's 2019 White Island volcanic eruption incident that killed 22

New Zealand has expressed confidence in the advice of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), regarding Japan's plan to release treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean.

On Monday, the nation said it has "full confidence" in the nuclear watchdog's advice.

<h2>What New Zealand said about discharge of treated 'nuclear' water from Fukushima plant</h2>

New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Nanaia Mahuta, met with IAEA director general Rafael Grossi in Auckland to discuss the IAEA's report on the proposed release.

As per AFP, during the meeting, Mahuta commended the IAEA's science-based approach and emphasised the need for meaningful engagement with the Pacific region due to its history with nuclear testing.

In a statement, the minister said: "I reiterated New Zealand's full confidence in the IAEA's advice and commended their science-based approach."

"I also felt it was important to draw attention to the Pacific's traumatic experience with nuclear testing and asked directly that meaningful engagement continues with the Pacific region on the proposed release," she added.

The nation itself has a strong nuclear-free policy and does not have any nuclear power stations.

<h2>What 'advice' did the nuclear watchdog give?</h2>

Last week, the UN nuclear watchdog gave the green light to a years-long project that looks to discharge treated water from the Fukushima plant, which was devastated by an earthquake and tsunami which hit the eastern coast of Japan in 2011.

The IAEA stated that Tokyo's scheme to release accumulated water from the nuclear plant and into the sea over the coming decades would have a "negligible" radiological impact on people and the environment.

As per the agency, the discharge is "consistent with relevant international safety standards" and "the controlled, gradual discharges of the treated water to the sea... would have a negligible radiological impact on people and the environment."

News agency AFP reports that at the Fukushima nuclear plant, approximately 1.33 million cubic metres of water, including groundwater, rainwater, and cooling water, have accumulated since the 2011 tsunami caused multiple meltdowns. The plant operator treats the water to remove most radioactive elements, except for tritium, and intends to dilute it before discharging it into the ocean over several decades.

<h2>Criticism by other nations</h2>

While New Zealand supports the IAEA's stance, Japan's plan has raised concerns among neighbouring countries. North Korea has criticised the IAEA for supporting the scheme, and China has announced that it will place a ban on certain Japanese food imports. Additionally, public concern has also grown in South Korea.

New Zealand backs UN nuclear watchdog's approval of Fukushima water release

Scientists uncovered the remains of the smallest extinct penguin species ever found which are said to have waddled their way around New Zealand around three million years ago. The study related to the findings was published, last month, in the Journal of Paleontology.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the scientists find?</h2>

The two fossils were discovered by Karl Raubenheimer in the three-million-year-old sediments in the southern Taranaki region of New Zealand’s North Island. According to the study, the fossilised skulls are said to belong to the newly discovered species, named Wilson’s little penguin (Eudyptula wilsonae).&nbsp;

The fossils were analysed by a team led by the Massey University of New Zealand and found that the nearly complete skulls belonged to an adult and a fledged juvenile who determined that they appear to be a part of the little penguin (Eudyptula minor) lineage.&nbsp;

The skulls are remarkably similar in both size and shape to little penguins which exist today and are the smallest living species of penguin. The researchers were unsure about how small the extinct penguins were since they did not find any other bones, however, the living penguins typically grow around 35 centimetres and weigh 0.9 kilograms.

<h2>What did the researchers say about the discovery?</h2>

In a statement, the researchers said that the findings help confirm the Zealandian origin of the little penguins as well as their presence during the Neogene period. Currently, little penguins and their four subspecies live across New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania but very little was known about their origins.&nbsp;

Scientists also wrote about how the recent findings have helped fill the gaps in this ecosystem’s history as well as provide insights into other extinct and living species from the country. “These newly discovered fossils show little penguins like kororā have been part of coastal ecosystems of Zealandia for at least three million years,” said Dr Daniel Thomas, a zoologist at Massey University in New Zealand, in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “This is important when thinking about the origins of these penguins, the evolution of the seabird diversity of Aotearoa and the dynamic environment in which they live.” This comes as in June 2022, over 500 little penguins mysteriously washed up dead on beaches in New Zealand, reported Live Science.&nbsp;

While the researchers were unsure of what killed them, it was speculated that climate change may have played a role. It was also found that most of the dead seabirds were significantly underweight which had been attributed to the hotter ocean surface temperatures, caused by climate change, that might have driven the little penguins’ prey further away from their reach.&nbsp;

“The rising temperature means more species will find Aotearoa habitable, so it’s important to learn as much as we can about the species that lived here during the last warm-world phase,” said Dr Thomas.&nbsp;
