Nepal Flood Horror: Flash floods have struck central Nepal, leaving five people missing after a landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha district. At least 82 people, including nine foreign nationals, have been rescued from the affected areas.

The floods swept away around 12 houses and two suspension bridges, while a highway bridge and a hydroelectric project camp also suffered damage. Authorities have urged residents across five districts to evacuate to safer locations as army and police teams continue rescue operations and monitor the situation.

No roof, no hope: Displaced families in Nepal demand resettlement after devastating floods

Severe flooding in Nepal has renewed concerns over the growing threat of glacial lake outburst floods across the Himalayas, with nearly 300,000 people potentially exposed to the risks. Rising temperatures and melting glaciers are increasing pressure on fragile mountain environments, raising fears that glacial lakes could overflow or suddenly release massive volumes of water.

‘Not just a local tragedy’: Nepal PM Shah warns UN of growing climate threat, says Nepal floods were 'a warning to the world'

A new study has blamed human-induced global warming for the catastrophic Nepal floods, saying the rising temperatures had thawed permafrost and thinned glacier ice that had been holding the mountainside together for centuries. Led by the World Weather Attribution (WWA), the study states that decades of warming had weakened the slope that collapsed on August 26, setting the stage for a disaster that went beyond the capacity of the existing disaster adaptation systems. They also found during their course of the study that the freezing line in the Himalayas has been moving up by 100 metres every decade. This is the point above which the ground remains permanently frozen. After the devastating floods killed over 1,300 people in Nepal and Tibet, scientists have been trying to understand what transpired on the day. Every study done so far has blamed climate change for it. Glaciers are melting in the Himalayas, which can cause similar floods in the future. "Climate warming, as a result of humans burning fossil fuels, is melting ice and snow in the Himalayas, decreasing glacier coverage and thawing permafrost," which destabilises the mountainsides, Bethan Davies, professor of glaciology at Newcastle University, said.
Mechanism of Nepal floods similar to Chamoli disaster
They stated that even though the scale of the disaster was unlike anything seen before, the signs of an imminent threat were always there. Walter Immerzeel, a mountain hydrologist at Utrecht University, told reporters, “The mechanism of the disaster is comparable to what happened in India in Uttarakhand, which is called the Chamoli disaster.” Comparing the two disasters, the team further said that in the Chamoli incident, the material that flowed down was only a fifth of what was seen in Nepal and the impact was much less, making the Nepal tragedy “unprecedented.”
2015 earthquake could have been a reason as well
They also presented another possibility. In 2015, a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck the Langtang Lirung mountain on Nepal's northern border, where the glacier collapse occurred this year. This may have weakened the slope that gave way in August. The intense shaking of the ground probably damaged the bedrock and increased the number of fractures. However, there is no proof that this happened, Immerzeel said. He added that these two factors combined may have had an impact, although they are sure that the changing climate was definitely responsible for the Nepal disaster.
Hotter monsoon months before Nepal tragedy
The researchers further stated that climate change had increased the temperatures in the months of July and August, which were the highest ever recorded in the region. During the monsoon, it was 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer, and the annual temperature had spiked by nearly 2 degrees Celsius. Professor Friederike Otto of Imperial College London said that even though they did not run a specific attribution model on the Langtang Lirung glacier's thinning, glacier thinning is the only cause of the tragedy that unfolded on August 26.

Thinning glacier, thawing permafrost and an earthquake that struck the mountain in 2015 likely together set the stage for the Nepal floods, a study has found. Scientists say the freezing line in the Himalayas has also moved up, revealing the gravity of the situation.

Nepal has witnessed its worst natural disaster in a decade. A glacial collapse and ice-rock avalanche near the country’s border with Tibet has claimed over 1,300 lives, leaving thousands missing and trapped in mudslides and debris. Yet, amid the devastation, the Himalayan nation has reported miraculous rescues, most notably that of Chandika Kumari Shrestha. News of her survival arrived just as her loved ones were preparing for her symbolic final rites. After days of waiting, many families had filed missing person reports and begun accepting the slim chances of survival. With heavy hearts, residents across the disaster-struck region chose to perform symbolic rituals for the peace of the departed. https://www.wionews.com/videos/nepal-floods-experts-call-floods-a-man-made-disaster-1788952832370/embed According to news agency Reuters, Shrestha survived inside a narrow air pocket under the rubble of her collapsed home in Betrawati village. We often hear stories of individuals overcoming natural disasters and extreme adversity. While willpower alone doesn't guarantee survival, the body's innate biological mechanisms work in tandem with mental resilience." While such miracles may seem rare against the backdrop of widespread devastation, Kannan pointed out that these stories demonstrate how biology and human spirit are intertwined: under extreme pressure, physical survival and the drive for meaning blend together. While prayers were likely offered for Shrestha’s safety, it is rare to see news of death and survival converge in a way that brings such profound joy. Remaining still in a protected air pocket helps conserve energy and slow the metabolic rate. However, prolonged entrapment still poses severe risks, including extreme dehydration, low blood pressure, acute kidney injury, infections, and muscle damage." Framing the ordeal through the lens of logotherapy, the existential psychotherapeutic framework developed by Viktor Frankl, Krishnaveni explained, "Frankl, a psychiatrist who survived Nazi concentration camps, proposed three core ideas: freedom of will, the will to meaning, and meaning in life itself. He argued that even when a person loses control over their physical environment, they retain the freedom to choose how they relate to their suffering. That search for meaning can become a powerful reason to endure when everything else is lost." In the end, while any good news is welcome, this story of survival was nothing short of a miracle.

Nepal Floods 2026: With roads and bridges destroyed and helicopters heavily engaged in search and rescue operations, the Nepal Army is turning to drones to deliver essential relief supplies to displaced communities.

At least 1,367 people have been confirmed dead and more than 5,000 remain missing following the devastating floods triggered after a Himalayan glacier broke off near the Nepal-China border in late August.

The army is using drones to transport food, medicines, fuel and other essentials to communities that remain difficult to reach by conventional methods. The drones can operate across distances of around 3 to 4 kilometres and carry up to 60 kilograms of supplies in a single trip.

The Nepal Army is currently making around 10 to 16 aid deliveries each day using four DJI FlyCart 100 drones donated by China as part of a recent aid package.

Nepal's flood catastrophe keeps deepening. The death toll from the devastating flash floods near the China border has climbed to 1,341-1,344, while nearly 5,000 people, including 589 foreign nationals, remain unaccounted for nearly two weeks after the disaster struck. Nepal's Foreign Ministry has set up an emergency control room to trace missing citizens and foreigners as DNA sampling continues for unidentified bodies.

Nepal death toll rises: 1,355 killed, rescue operations continue

The Nepal floods have exposed the threat posed by glacial lakes in the Himalayas. Now a study has warned that between nine and 12 lakes in Himachal Pradesh are at a "critical" stage. This means that all these lakes could burst as the rising heat breaks down the barriers, creating the threat of similar floods. Researchers at IIT Mandi conducted a study of 2,000 glacial lakes and found that the risk from melting glaciers is rising. The research states that besides the melting glaciers and the expanding glacial lakes, permafrost loss has also destabilised the terrain. Climate change has triggered conditions to change rapidly under the Himalayan glaciers. With permafrost also melting, the mountain region has become increasingly unstable. Several of the glacial lakes studied by the IIT Mandi scientists have expanded over a decade, with 30 to 60 per cent of them today bigger than what they were 10 years ago.
Four main lakes flagged
Glaciers are bearing the brunt of rising tourism, pollution and dust deposits, all of which have accelerated the melting. The National Disaster Management Authority has identified four lakes that require immediate attention: Ghepan Lake, Vasuki Lake, Kashang and a lake near Baspa. The threats have expanded due to human-induced changes in the region. Also Read: Beginning of the end? New Delhi: Singapore’s prime minister and former premier have condemned a wave of racist online comments targeting the country’s Indian community, warning that prejudice must not be allowed to take root. Singapore probes ‘shameful, nasty’ anti-India racist remarks after Nepal floods

Nepal continues to battle the devastating aftermath of the August 26 glacial collapse and flash floods, with the death toll surpassing 1,300 and thousands still missing. Rescue teams are searching through debris, damaged settlements and hydropower tunnels for survivors.

In a major breakthrough, a Chinese national was rescued alive after spending 10 days trapped inside a hydropower tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 project. He was found around 225 metres inside the tunnel and was reported to have stable vital signs, though he showed signs of mild hypothermia.

A 64-year-old woman, Chandika Shrestha, was also rescued alive after 11 days after being buried beneath debris in Nuwakot. The dramatic rescues have renewed hopes that other missing people could still be alive.

NEPAL FLOODS | Nepal’s devastating floods and glacial collapse have killed more than 1,300 people, while over 5,600 remain missing as rescue teams continue a desperate search for survivors.

Twelve days into the disaster, rescue operations are continuing across some of the worst-hit regions. In the Chile area, an Indian-Nepali rescue team is searching for people believed to be trapped inside a hydropower tunnel.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, an approach road for heavy machinery is being constructed to speed up rescue operations. A three-ton excavator has been transported to Syru Bessi, where it will be assembled before being moved toward the tunnel once the temporary route is ready.

In Rasuwa, a Chinese national was rescued alive from inside a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project. The survivor had no visible injuries and stable vital signs but showed signs of mild hypothermia. Officials say this is the third person rescued alive from the tunnels.

In surprising detail, a 30-year-old worker rescued from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project in Nepal after nine days claimed that he kept chanting the ‘Hare Krishna’ mantra while trapped, with the expectation of being saved. He was trapped in the tunnel during the devastating floods that claimed thousands of lives. “I was chanting Hare Krishna mahamantra for the past nine days,” Sah said after he was rescued safely. A video has also been released by the Nepali Army displaying Sah being carried on a worker's back, with his face covered with mud.

However, by the time he tried to escape himself, it was too late. He then spent nine days trapped in darkness inside the tunnel. He said he was able to stay in contact with three or four nearby workers, either by speaking or making sounds. Sah added that additional people might still be trapped further inside the tunnel, possibly near the powerhouse. “Not everyone may have been able to escape. The tunnel is very long,” he said, and added that the force of the floodwater could have carried people further inside. The other rescued worker, 45-year-old mechanical supervisor Kabir Maharjan, was airlifted to Nepal Army Hospital in Chhauni, Kathmandu, for treatment due to health complications, while Sah was taken to a local hospital in Trishuli. Security officials said his condition was stable. Sah and Maharjan are the first workers rescued from the hydropower project since the disaster struck, though a small group had earlier managed to escape from a different tunnel shortly after the incident. Search and rescue efforts, led by the Nepal Army using specialised equipment, are ongoing.

Two hydropower workers were pulled alive on Friday from a tunnel buried by debris in Nepal, a rare ray of hope on the tenth day of rescue efforts after catastrophic Himalayan flooding. Rescuers cheered as one man was pulled through a muddy opening.
He was helped to his feet by rescuers, and later carried on the backs of the emergency workers, raising his hand as they rushed him towards a helicopter. Rescuers called it a "miracle" after the August 26 glacial and mountain collapse on the China-Nepal border killed at least 1,325 people and left more than 5,500 missing.

Nepal on Monday increased the number of deaths to 1,259 and missing to over 4,747 following the devastating flood that swept through a northern of Nepal bordering Tibet (in southern China) last week, according to the latest update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). The latest figures reflect an increase of 115 deaths and more than 1,700 new missing persons from the previous count on Nepalese soil alone.

Nepal flash floods: Death toll rises to 1,259

Catastrophic floods triggered by a glacier collapse have devastated Nepal, leaving more than 1,200 people dead and thousands missing. Rescue teams continue a massive search operation as survivors struggle amid widespread destruction and humanitarian crisis.

Nepal flash floods: Deadly flash floods kill over 1,204; Thousands still missing

Nepal’s deadly floods have raised difficult questions about climate change, disaster preparedness and accountability. While PM Balendra Shah is calling for international action, Nepal must also confront its own role in managing risks across the fragile Himalayas.

As India continues to be among the first responders in times of crisis, the disaster also highlights a larger reality: the Himalayas do not follow political borders, and disasters upstream can affect communities across the region.

NEPAL FLOOD LIVE: Nepal is still counting the dead and searching for thousands of missing people, five days after a devastating wall of mud and water tore through the Himalayan border region. The official death toll has climbed to 788, while around 2,500 people remain unaccounted for.

Rescue teams are battling thick debris, damaged roads and swollen rivers across affected areas along the Trishuli and surrounding river systems. New images show buildings destroyed, roads washed away and infrastructure reduced to rubble after the powerful flood surge swept down from the Tibet region.

A major focus of the rescue operation is now on hydropower projects, where workers are feared trapped inside tunnels. More than 100 workers could still be alive across several tunnels, while Nepal’s disaster management authorities have reported around 933 hydropower workers missing since the floods struck.

Rescue teams are drilling access points, pumping air through pipes and sending cameras underground in an effort to locate survivors.

Nepal is also facing a growing humanitarian and identification crisis as morgues fill and some victims become difficult to identify. Authorities have temporarily buried unidentified bodies after collecting DNA samples and other evidence. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has said the samples will be preserved to help identify victims and eventually return them to their families.
