Blending ancient practices with modern science: Significance of traditional medicine centre in India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Joe Biden held virtual talks on Monday (April 11) and discussed a range of issues. However, the main topic remained the Russia and Ukraine war.

PM Modi said, "Today, our interaction is being held at a time when the situation in Ukraine is a matter of concern. A few weeks back, over 20,000 Indians were stranded in Ukraine, most of them were young students."

Calling for the de-escalation of the Russia-Ukraine situation and progressing toward a path of peace, PM Modi said, "I have spoken with Presidents of both Ukraine and Russia over the telephone, several times. I not only appealed to them for peace but also suggested President Putin hold direct talks with the Ukrainian President."

PM Modi also said that India has sent medicines and other relief materials to Ukraine and other neighbouring nations. Further, on the demand of Ukraine, the Indian government is sending another consignment of medicines soon.

PM Modi also said that detailed discussions over the Russia-Ukraine conflict were held in the Indian Parliament, where the reports of killing innocent citizens in Bucha city were immediately condemned. He said that India had supported an impartial probe.

Meanwhile, US President said, "I am pleased to have this opportunity to speak to you virtually today and with two of your ministers and your ambassador."

"We take same concerns about the global challenges we faced during Covid-19, advancing health securities and tracking economic crisis," Biden added.

The Biden-Modi meeting will precede a meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, the White House said.

Biden told Modi he is looking forward to seeing him in Japan "on about the 24th of May."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended good wishes to Team Australia, who will be playing in the final of the ongoing ICC Women's ODI World Cup.

PM Modi's statement came during the signing of a massive historic trade deal with Australia aiming to boost economic ties between the two countries.

"I would like to congratulate and wish all the best to Australia's women's team, who will be playing the final of ICC Women's ODI World Cup tomorrow," PM Modi said.

Despite having won 10 of the previous 11 World Cups between them, England and Australia will face off in an ICC Women's Cricket World Cup final for the first time in 34 years.

The Hagley Oval in Christchurch will play host to the showpiece event of the 2022 tournament as Australia go in search of a record-extending seventh title, while England look to defend their crown.

The two sides started their campaigns together almost a month ago in Hamilton and will end them together, one holding the trophy, the other looking on.

Australia have lost only one World Cup final but it was not too far away from the setting for Sunday's finale.

Back in 2000, just down the road from Christchurch at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln, Australia lost the closest final the tournament has ever seen, defeated by New Zealand by just four runs.

That year, England recorded their worst-ever World Cup finish of fifth before fighting back to take the trophy from Australia in 2009.

In doing so, they would go on to have a remarkable year also claiming their first, and only, T20 World Cup as well as an Ashes victory.

It is something that Australia are hoping to match 13 years later, they already hold the T20 trophy having secured that on home soil in 2020 before the Ashes were wrapped up with two games to spare in February, but the one-day World Cup evades them.

Vice-captain Rachael Haynes already has a winner's medal from 2013, and she is well on her way to a competition record, the opening batter sits on 429 runs for the tournament, 27 behind Debbie Hockley of New Zealand's all-time best set in 1997.

That is not the only record that could be broken on Sunday, Sophie Ecclestone has the chance to surpass Australian Lyn Fullston, whose haul of 23 wickets in 1982 remains the mark to beat.

Ecclestone sits on 20 wickets having taken her maiden international five-wicket haul in the semi-final against South Africa ending on six for 36, the best figures by an England bowler in a World Cup as the 2022 edition continues to be bigger and better than anything we have seen before.

The left-arm spinner is emblematic of England's journey throughout the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2022 in that she is peaking at exactly the right time.

Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is likely to visit India for a three-day trip on April 1.

This will be his first official bilateral visit since he assumed the Prime Minister’s office in July last year.

However, there has not been any official announcement from either side.

As per sources, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Nepali PM will jointly inaugurate the Kurtha-Jaynagar Railway on April 2 in New Delhi.

The train service would cover a distance of 35 kilometres from Jayanagar in India's Bihar state to Kurtha in Janakpur, Nepal.

The Department of Railways in Nepal told WION that they have not received any information on the visit of the prime minister.

Director-general of the department Deepak Kumar Bhattarai said, “Our department has not received any information on the visit but the preparation for the inauguration has been underway since long and we are hopeful that in near future the railway will come into operation."

Speaking on the benefits of the railway line for Nepal, Bhattarai said, “Nepal Railway Company Limited will manage the operation of the railways. All form of transportation is important for Nepal. India's railway network is among the largest in the world, and is benefiting people from all walks of life. This railway line will do the same for Nepal and will complement all modes of transport.”

Earlier, India’s Konkan Railway Corporation Limited had handed over two modern diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) trains to the Nepal Railways as per the agreement signed between the Konkan Railways Corporation Ltd and Nepal government, which cost Nepal NPR 850 million.

India has borne the cost of the construction of the tracks and stations, Bhattarai said.

“Built as part of Government of India’s commitment of NPR 8.77 billion for Jaynagar-Bijalpura-Bardibas rail link, it passes through the historical city of Janakpur and will further boost people-to-people connectivity between India and Nepal,” Indian Embassy in Nepal had earlier said in a tweet.

The new railway line is being constructed under the India-Nepal Development Partnership programme, with financial grants being provided by the Government of India. It covers a total distance of 69-kilometres between Jaynagar-Janakpur-Bardibas. Construction work on this project started in 2014.

As per the plan, the railway track for this project is being constructed in three phases. Construction of the first phase of the project of 35-km links Jaynagar and Janakpur/Kurtha.

The second phase covering a distance of 17-km that links Kurtha/Janakpur to Bhangaha is almost completed and the third phase of 17 km linking Bhangaha to Bardibas is still under construction

The 35-km rail link connecting Jayanagar and Kurtha will come into operation after the joint inauguration of the prime ministers. It will take one and a half hours to reach Jaynagar to Kurtha.

The train would take a halt at eight stations and can carry 1,350 passengers at a time.

“Initially, the train will run once a day from Kurtha to Jayanagar on a regular basis. It is expected that the Nepal Railways Company Limited will increase the frequency gradually”, another official at the department told WION.

“Railway fare for the 35-kilometre section is Rs 90 (US $1) per person in ordinary class and five times more will be charged per person in the AC class,” the official added.

It is expected that the railway line will increase the trade between the two countries.

Since February, Nepal has been conducting dry tests of the railways and the ‘results have been satisfactory’.

India will also send 26 technical personnel, including drivers and engineers.

With the operation of the Jaynagar-Janakpur section of the Nepal Railway, religious tourism is likely to boom as many people from India would get an opportunity to visit Janakpur, which happens to be the holiest place for the Hindu pilgrims of the world as Goddess Sita, wife of Lord Ram, was born there.

Over the years, Nepal has been receiving active cooperation from India for the development of its infrastructural facilities, like roads, airports, and Integrated Check Posts at the customs offices.

In this effort, the Jaynagar-Janakpur train service has added a new milestone in Nepal-India relations.

Apart from this, Director-General Bhattarai said a study of a railway line from Raxaul, India, to Kathmandu is also underway which is being funded by India.

"The study is being funded by India, but there is no confirmation if India will be part of the implementation of the project."

The initiation of the visit was exchanged between the two countries in October last year, as per sources, but the visit was later cancelled due to increasing Covid cases.

India and Australia on Monday firmed up a series of new initiatives in the areas of critical minerals, clean energy, mobility of students and tax benefits for investments in sovereign funds at a virtual summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison.

The Australian side unveiled a total investment of around Rs 1,500 crore in certain key sectors as the two sides vowed to further energise their ties including in the Indo-Pacific region.

The two strategic partners decided to set up a young defence officer exchange programme to boost military cooperation and announced the setting up of a task force to examine whether the two sides could recognise the same educational qualifications.

The exchange programme has been named after India's first Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, who was killed in a helicopter crash in December.

Underlining the importance of unlocking untapped potential in bilateral trade and investment, Modi and Morrison agreed that the two sides should attempt to conclude the proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) at the earliest.

The two sides also announced establishing a mechanism of annual summits between the two countries that is aimed at creating a structural system for regular review of the relationship.

At a media briefing, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by India's Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL) and Australia's Critical Minerals Facilitation Office will facilitate establishing a framework for joint investments in Australian projects to mine critical minerals.

"This is an important area for both our countries and this agreement will give us the opportunities to both invest in Australia's critical minerals sector and get Australian expertise in this area," he said.

India has been looking at boosting cooperation with Australia in areas of critical minerals with that country having a significant source of lithium, cobalt and vanadium, considered crucial for the manufacturing of critical electronic components.

The two sides also firmed up a letter of intent to work towards a migration and mobility partnership agreement.

A separate letter of arrangement was inked for examining the educational qualifications recognition.

Another MoU was signed for cooperation and collaboration on broadcasting between Prasar Bharati and the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) of Australia.

In his opening remarks, Modi said remarkable progress has been made on CECA in a very short time.

"I am confident that the remaining issues will also be agreed upon soon. The early completion of CECA will be crucial for our economic relations, economic revival and economic security," he said.

"There is also good cooperation between us in Quad. Our cooperation reflects our commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific. Quad's success is very important for regional and global stability," Modi said.

Morrison said an "interim" CECA will help to unlock new opportunities and benefits for the countries. "It will bring us closer to a full agreement as soon as I hope we can achieve that."

Australian High Commissioner Barry O'Farrell on Sunday said the interim or the early harvest trade pact will be inked by end of this month.

Modi said that overall ties witnessed significant progress in the last few years.

"Trade and investment, defence and security, education and innovation, science and technology -- we have very close cooperation in all these areas. Our collaboration has grown rapidly in many other areas such as critical minerals, water management, renewable energy, and Covid-19 research," he said.

A statement by the Australian government said the two countries will establish a task force to develop "qualifications recognition arrangements" for Australia and India to enhance two-way mobility.

"The task force, announced by Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, will address the recognition of online and blended learning, joint degrees and offshore campuses," it said.

Australia's acting minister for education Stuart Robert said the task force would consult with stakeholders to identify opportunities for the recognition of Australian and Indian higher education qualifications and to make recommendations to improve arrangements based on best principles and practices in recognition.

Shringla said the two sides also agreed to increase cooperation between India's National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and Australia's Future Fund, which is a sovereign wealth fund.

"We are willing to match the tax benefits Australia gives to its sovereign and pension funds once they invest in India," he said.

In his remarks, Modi also welcomed the announcement of the establishment of the Centre of Excellence for Critical and Emerging Technology Policy in Bengaluru.

"It is imperative that we have better cooperation between us in cyber and critical and emerging technologies. It is the responsibility of countries with similar values like us to adopt appropriate global standards in these emerging technologies," he said.

The visit comes at a time when both countries are celebrating 30 years of establishment of diplomatic ties.

India and Israel established full diplomatic relations on January 29, 1992, and earlier this year a commemorative logo was launched to mark the occasion.

The logo features the Star of David and the Ashoka Chakra and forms the numeral 30 depicting the 30th anniversary of bilateral relations.

February saw the iconic buildings in India— the Gateway of India in Mumbai and the Teen Murti Haifa Chowk in Delhi—and Israel’s Masada Fortress being lit up in Indian and Israeli flag colours.

The Ukraine crisis will likely be discussed during the visit. Indian and Israeli PMs have engaged with Russian and Ukrainian leadership over the crisis.

PM Bennett was in Moscow in a surprise visit, while PM Modi and Russian President Putin have spoken three times since February 24, the day Moscow's invasion of Ukraine started.

Relations between India and Israel have been strengthened under PM Modi's government.

Last year, several high-level dignitaries visited Israel, including External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar (October 2021), Indian Army Chief Gen MM Naravane (Nov 2021) and the former Air Chief RKS Bhadauria (August 2021).

PM Modi had visited Israel in 2017, during which the relationship was upgraded to a strategic partnership.

In response, the then prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, visited India in 2018.

Indian President Pranab Mukherjee paid a state visit to Israel in October 2015 while Israeli President Reuven Rivlin was in India in November 2016.

Defence, agriculture, and trade, among others, have been the key pillars of the relationship between the two countries.

Indian forces have participated in the multilateral airforce exercise ‘Blue Flag 2021’ held in October in Israel.

Both countries have restarted negotiations for the free trade agreement, which is expected to conclude by mid-2022. India is Israel's third-largest trading partner in Asia and the seventh-largest globally.

The visit comes amid a number of high-level visits to New Delhi as Covid crisis abates.

The Japanese Prime Minister Fumio is currently in Delhi, and a number of ministers from other countries, including Austria, Oman, Greece, the UK, and Mexico, will also land in Delhi.

India and China are discussing to facilitate the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

India’s Modi and Japan’s Kishida discussed China and Ukraine conflict: Shringla

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Saturday announced a 5 trillion yen ($42 billion) investment in India over the next five years during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

"We (Kishida and Modi) confirmed any unilateral change to the status quo by force cannot be forgiven in any region, and it is necessary to seek peaceful resolutions of disputes based on international law," Kishida told reporters after meeting Modi in New Delhi.

The two leaders were meeting to strengthen security amid the Ukraine crisis and improve economic ties between the two nations.

Japan in recent years has supported India's urban infrastructure development and the high-speed railway based on its bullet train technology.

A joint statement pointedly "underlined that the Quad must remain focused on its core objective of promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region".

Kishida's office quoted him saying before meeting Modi that "Russia's aggression against Ukraine is an outrage that undermines the very foundation of the order of the international community, including Asia".

"Such unilateral changes to the status quo are also absolutely unacceptable in the Indo-Pacific region. During this overseas trip (to India and Cambodia) I will engage in exchanges of views with my counterparts about the situation in Ukraine and other matters and urge them to take action," Kishida's office tweeted.

India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is more like to respond to the Pakistan military’s real or perceived provocation than in the past, an annual threat assessment report by the US intelligence community told the US Congress.

The report released by the Office of Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) said that the crisis between India and Pakistan was of particular concern "because of the risk – however low – of an escalatory cycle between two nuclear-armed states."

"Pakistan has a long history of supporting anti-India militant groups; under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is more likely than in the past to respond with military force to perceived or real Pakistani provocations, and each side's perception of heightened tensions raises the risk of conflict, with violent unrest in Kashmir or a militant attack in India being potential flashpoints," the ODNI report said.

The report also acknowledged the growing strain in relations between India and China in the wake 2020 border clash, saying that there is a growing risk of armed confrontation between the two Asian giants.

"We assess that the expanded military postures by both India and China along the disputed border elevate the risk of armed confrontation between two nuclear powers that might involve direct threats to US persons and interests and calls for US intervention. Previous standoffs have demonstrated that persistent low-level friction on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has the potential to escalate swiftly," the report noted.

The tensions between New Delhi and Beijing escalated following a deadly clash in Galwan Valley on June 15, 2020.

So far 14 rounds of talks have taken place to resolve the situation along the friction areas in eastern Ladakh, but with little success.

According to reports, India and China will be holding the 15th round of Corps Commander-level discussions on March 11 to try and resolve the issues.

As of now, China has a platoon-sized strength of troops on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) at Hot Springs.

Chinese troops are blocking Indian soldiers from accessing their traditional patrolling limits in Depsang Plains, which is close to India’s strategic Daulat Beg Oldie base in the north.

I would love to debate with Narendra Modi, says Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck India in early 2020, global experts predicted that the second most populous country in the world would face a tsunami of cases.

Everyone had written off India, saying that its "weak health infrastructure" wouldn’t be able to cater to the huge masses.

But India, under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, proved every doomsday prediction wrong with its effective response to the rising challenge.

Be it the oxygen cylinder crisis or the shortage of essential medicines due to the unavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) from China, India rose to every occasion and dealt with each problem with its swift decision making.

Priyam Gandhi-Mody, in her book 'A Nation to Protect: Leading India through the COVID Crisis', provides a definitive account of how India emerged from the deadly crisis under the strong leadership of PM Modi.

In an interview with WION, she talked about her experience and what motivated her to write the book.

WION: How did this book happen? What was your biggest motivation to write it?

Priyam Gandhi-Mody: When COVID-19 had spread to several parts of the world, India was pegged to be the next hotspot with doomsday predictions to the tune of dead bodies piling up on the streets. Some even said that because of India, the global fight against the virus will take a few steps back. It was no secret that due to decades of negligence, we had inherited a weak health infrastructure and lacked almost all the tools which any nation would need to fight a global pandemic. But as time went on, the Prime Minister led the country from the front and citizens, bureaucrats, and leaders lined up to follow his directives.

India’s response began to strengthen, taking us to a point where we can confidently say that we have managed the response far better than most wealthier nations who were far better equipped. This ‘India story’ needed to be told.

WION: In your words, can you describe how was India's Covid response different from other countries?

Priyam Gandhi-Mody: Decisive leadership by the prime minister. His insistence on involving states, all chief ministers and ‘all of government’ approach is what set us apart.

When he made decisions, he never went back on them, never flip-flopped and kept a direct channel of communication with the people open, building trust.

WION: Can you share something about the writing process and how long did it take you to compile this work?

Priyam Gandhi-Mody: For about six months I have been speaking to various people who have led the country’s response, from the government to private folks, experts and industry leaders. I have tried to include all those opinions and responses to strengthen the story.

WION: Your thoughts on the Indian government's collaboration with private organisations to combat COVID-19

Priyam Gandhi-Mody: If it wasn’t for extensive effort on this collaboration we would still be relying on other nations for our essentials – masks, tests, PPE kits, ventilators and vaccines. This pandemic has shown us the value of ‘aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliant) and how it can bring us independence, security and strength.

WION: Your thoughts on India's vaccination drive compared to other countries

Priyam Gandhi-Mody: The backbone of our vaccination drive has been our COWIN platform, which has ensured equality, appropriate mobilization of vials and meticulous management of the administration. While western nations were issuing flimsy paper pieces for proof of vaccination, we were issuing a QR coded, fool-proof certificate on the mobile phone.

GoI operated with the knowledge that our vaccine supply was going to be back-loaded, meaning our suppliers would be providing a significantly large amount of doses in the second half of 2021. This is why, we secured our most vulnerable populations first. In fact, even the Prime Minister waited his turn to get vaccinated, pumping in discipline into the effort.

WION: Having worked closely with PM Modi, can you tell us a bit about your interactions with him?

Priyam Gandhi-Mody: Just like most other people, I had made certain assumptions about him because of how sections of the media portray him – authoritarian, someone who makes unilateral decisions, intimidating etc. However, all those were quickly shattered when I saw that he is as much human as all of us – replete with the same emotions.

His answers were detailed, eye-opening and certainly played a huge part in putting the entire information that everyone else was giving me in context.

WION: What are your future plans? Any new book we should look forward to?

Priyam Gandhi-Mody: There are a bunch of things in the pipeline but we’ll see where they go. Too early to speak about them at this point.

India proved every cynic wrong with its swift action against COVID-19: Priyam Gandhi-Mody

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that India's rising capability in the drone sector will give the world a new leadership, as he flagged off 100 'kisan drones' in different parts of the country for spraying pesticides and other farm materials.

Modi launched the drones on Friday with officials describing it as a "very novel and exciting initiative" for farmers.

In his speech, the prime minister said a new culture of drone start-ups is getting ready in India. Their numbers will soon be in thousands from over 200 now, leading to the generation of employment opportunities on a massive scale.

He said his government will ensure that there is no impediment in the sector's development and has already undertaken several reforms and policy measures to facilitate its rise. This is an example of how high the country can fly if policies are right, Modi said, noting that drones were mostly associated with the defence sector until a few years back.

This is a new chapter in providing modern farming facilities in the 21st century, and not only will it prove to be a milestone in the development of the drone sector but also open infinite possibilities, he said.

The prime minister said his government did not waste time on apprehensions about opening up the drone sector but trusted India's young talent and moved ahead with a new mindset. He said his government has given priority to technology and innovations in the Budget and policy measures.

Noting that drones have diverse usages, Modi said, they have been used in the 'Swamitva Yojana' aimed at creating a record of land ownership in villages and transporting medicines and vaccines.
