<p>Nearly a year after Fawad Khan confirmed his presence in Marvel's new series 'Ms Marvel', the Pakistani actor made his first appearance in the fifth episode of the show on Wednesday and got a thunderous welcome online.&nbsp;<br />
Khan had a blink-and-miss appearance earlier in episode four but fans were in for a treat as the new episode that dropped on Wednesday featured mostly the back story of Kamala Khan's great grandparents Hasan and Ayesha, played by Fawad Khan and Mehwish Hayat respectively.&nbsp;<br />

Ahead of the episode, Disney+Hotstar gave a sneak peek to the fans on what to expect in the coming episode and featured Fawad and Mehwish. In the show, Mehwish plays Ayesha, Kamala's great-grandmother from whom she has inherited the magical bangle that has given her the superpowers and Fawad plays Hasan, a freedom fighter living in pre-independent India, who dreams of freedom from British rule.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The six-part series sort of paves way for the young avenger Kate Bishop who has idolised Hawkeye since childhood as a superhero. But Renner feels that his character's biggest superpower is not archery but the fact that he is 'palatable and accessible'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The series opens with Barton visiting New York City with his three kids just before Christmas and watching an Avengers musical. &nbsp;Renner plays a doting father in the series which he feels is his character’s biggest strength.&nbsp;</p>

Instead, MCU takes a giant leap of faith and presents newer heroes who come with their own set of problems some of which are very complicated. It's no children play anymore for Marvel as Eternals are far more superior in might, power and intellect than the Avengers. Naturally, the adrenaline rush of watching Eternals takes a while to come when compared to previous superhero films from MCU. &nbsp;But that is a good thing.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
At 155 minutes, Eternals takes time to establish the plot and the thrill is only in the second half. That's when the real action begins. So you don't find yourself rooting for any superhero much. There is no obvious favourite either.&nbsp;</p>

It has Marvel's first sex scene, a gay kiss, a deaf and mute superhero, and even a South Asian superhero disguising as a Bollywood hero and even acknowledges mental health. Marvel takes the inclusivity conversation to an all-new level-it's of course not always accurate but hey, it's a start.&nbsp;</p>

At 155 minutes, Eternals takes time to establish the plot and the thrill is only in the second half. That's when the real action begins. So you don't find yourself rooting for any superhero much. There is no obvious favourite either. It makes you think. Eternals also has many firsts for a Marvel film. It has Marvel's first sex scene, a gay kiss, a deaf and mute superhero, and even a South Asian superhero disguising as a Bollywood hero and even acknowledges mental health. Marvel takes the inclusivity conversation to an all-new level-it's of course not always accurate but hey, it's a start. Eternals also often refers to the Avengers for relatability, even refers to rival DC hero Superman and Star Wars to create a wholesome film. Zhao also lets veterans Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie take a back seat and lets newer talents like Madden, Chan, and Nanjiani take lead. Madden and Chan are credible in their roles and it would be interesting to watch their characters grow in the subsequent films. Kit Harington plays the most endearing character in the film and his character is the one to watch out for in the sequel. <p>Admittedly one of the lesser-known players in the comic company’s roster, Shang-Chi, aka the Master of Kung Fu, wasn’t even familiar to many of the creators hired by Disney and Marvel Studios a couple of years ago to bring the character to cinematic life.</p>

<p>Destin Daniel Cretton, director of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which premiered Friday, had never even heard of the character when he was growing up. Nor had Canadian actor Simu Liu (“Kim’s Convenience”), who plays Shang-Chi in the film.</p>

<p>When screenwriter David Callaham, a longtime Marvel fan, was first approached about the project and told it would feature an Asian superhero, he figured it had to be Amadeus Cho, aka the Korean American Hulk, who made his first comic book appearance in 2005. When Callaham learned it would be Shang-Chi, “I said, ‘I don’t know what that is.’ ”</p>

<p>Many people didn’t. For the creators, this gave them a lot of freedom in crafting “Shang-Chi,” which stars Liu as a young Chinese American hotel valet — and unbeknown to even his closest pals, “the world’s greatest martial artist” — trying to get out from under the thumb of his overbearing dad.</p>

<p>Known property or not, the movie is a cause for celebration: It’s Marvel’s first and only superhero film starring an Asian lead, with an Asian American director and writer, and based on a character who was actually Asian in the original comic.</p>

<p>But oh, that comic! When “The Hands of Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu” was first published in 1974, the series was very much a product of its time — with its ’70s hairstyles and nods to Fleetwood Mac — and of even earlier times, with source material that dated to 1920s England. It was also one of Marvel’s most racially problematic, with Asian faces rendered in garish oranges and yellows unseen in nature, and Orientalist characters like Shaka Kharn (a reincarnated Genghis Khan knockoff); the monosyllabic Chankar (aka “the unstoppable sumo”); and Moon Sun (a Chinese “ancient one” accompanied by his “most lovely and honorable” daughter, Tiko).</p>

<p>Its star spent much of his time shirtless and shoeless, spouted fortune-cookie platitudes in stilted English, and hung out with British guys with names like Black Jack Tarr and Sir Denis Nayland Smith.</p>

<p>And then there was his dad. Shang-Chi’s father wasn’t just any overbearing Asian patriarch who wanted his son to follow him in the family business, but Fu Manchu, the “Yellow Peril” archvillain created by the British novelist Sax Rohmer in 1913. Long of nail and mustache, Fu Manchu dreams of world domination. In a 1932 film starring Boris Karloff in garish yellowface, he orders his followers to “kill the white man and take his women.” When reviving a series with that sort of legacy, what was Marvel to do?</p>

<p>Ditch Fu Manchu, for starters. “Fu Manchu was problematic for a billion reasons,” Callaham said.</p>

<p>Even so, Cretton said, adapting the series seemed daunting. “When I first met with Marvel, truthfully, I really just went in there to put my voice in the room and say, can you guys please avoid this, or try not to do that?” said Cretton, who’s better known for “Short Term 12” and other dramas. “I never thought in a million years I’d end up booking the gig.”</p>

<p>Even without Fu Manchu, Marvel wanted to preserve the family relationship at the core of the story, but with a father figure that would appeal to an eminent actor. “When they asked who we should get to play the father, the first name out of my mouth was Tony Leung,” Cretton said. “But I also said there’s no way we would get him.”</p>

<p>In many ways, getting Leung, who won the 2000 best actor award in Cannes for his role in “In the Mood for Love,” was a signal to just about everybody that Fu Manchu wouldn’t be in the movie, in any form. One of Hong Kong’s most beloved and gifted actors playing a racist, anti-Chinese stereotype?</p>

<p>This latest martial arts tale is chock-full of Asian faces, including veteran Hong Kong stars like Leung and Michelle Yeoh, and Asian American actors like Awkwafina, Fala Chen and comedian Ronny Chieng.</p>

<p>“I grew up in Hawaii, and all of my friends are some mix of Asian American or Pacific Islander,” said Cretton, who is Chinese American. “I wanted Shang-Chi to be surrounded by a group of young people who reminded me of my friends and felt like my friends.”<br />

The creators were so conscious of all the preconceptions they were up against that they even made a list of Hollywood stereotypes about Asians that they hoped to dispel. In their movie, the comedy would come &lt;em&gt;from &lt;/em&gt;the Asian characters, not be directed at them. “We were also very interested in portraying Shang-Chi as romantically viable, as an Asian man,” Callaham said, “and simultaneously also very cognizant of the opposite stereotype of Asian women, where they’re oversexualized or fetishized.”<br />

“Shang-Chi” also features mystical creatures; a sly swipe at the racist pasts of both Fu Manchu and Marvel’s Fu Manchu-like character, the Mandarin; and martial arts heroines galore. But for Callaham, one of the most memorable moments in creating the movie had nothing to do with monster-filled mayhem or martial arts stunts.</p>

<p>“I was writing a sequence where Shang-Chi’s in San Francisco, and he’s hanging out with his friends, living a lifestyle that is not entirely dissimilar from what I have lived in the past,” he said.</p>

<p>“I suddenly felt myself overwhelmed with emotion,” he continued. “Generally I’m hired to write a movie-star role so that we can attract a movie star, and typically those have not been Asian faces. It’s usually a beautiful white man named Chris or something. And all power to those guys, but I’ve always had to put myself in a position of imagining what it would be like to be somebody else. This was the first time in my life I’ve been able to sit back and not have to imagine it anymore.”</p>

<p>Canadian-Chinese actor Simu Liu takes on the mantle of Marvel's first Asian superhero in Destin Daniel Cretton's film which is the first solo film that introduces a new superhero into the already eclectic universe that Marvel has created in the past decade.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Complete with humour, jaw-dropping action stunts merged with Asian mysticism, &nbsp;'Shang-Chi' is the perfect film to watch on the big screen after a long hiatus thanks to the pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the centre of the film is Shaun or Shang Chi, a Chinese-American youth who has a chance encounter with a group of bad guys on a bus who are after his pendant. The group, which includes a man with a razor for his arm, manage to get his pendant after an elaborate action sequence in a moving bus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shaun and his best friend Katy(Awkwafina) then head to Macau as he thinks his sister is in danger. Turns out the goons were sent by his father and now they are after the sister Xu Xialing (Meng'er Zhang) who also wears a similar pendant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two are no match to their father's army of warriors and soon the two are taken to their home in Macau. Their father Wenwu(Tony Leung) has been the keeper of the Ten Rings for thousands of years and wields immense power thanks to it. He now wants to use the rings to burn down a village Ta Lo- which has mystical powers and safeguards the universe from evil forces. Wenwu believes that the village has held his wife Ying Li captive- who is long dead. Wenwu brings back his estranged children to bring his family together.&nbsp;</p>

From the very beginning on that show, they kept giving me the same questions on diversity and what’s it like to be in the first Asian Canadian sitcom, etc. I went through an evolutionary process of learning to have a voice and how to use it, knowing when to step in. I don’t always get it right, for sure. However, it’s better to speak your mind than hold your tongue and wish you had said something," he told TOI.</p>

When quizzed about his knowledge of Bollywood and its actors, Liu replied saying, "I like Shah Rukh Khan and Irrfan. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is so beautiful and, of course, Priyanka Chopra Jonas. <p>By making another version of Loki a hero, the series itself is acting as a variant. In general, Marvel has been using its latest Disney+ shows to deviate from the often wearying, even oppressive, timeline that the films have established. These side stories open up the world to more subtle, interesting narratives: “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” allowed their heroes to develop in terms of both superhero abilities and emotional depth.</p>

<p>But whatever their divergences, these stories always end up leashed to the main MCU narrative: Marvel’s own inviolable timeline, which often yields an awkward result. “WandaVision” used its classic TV parodies to cleverly explore the contours of grief and emotional escapism until its “Avengers” adjacency apparently demanded a requisite explosive ending. Sam Wilson (Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) wrestled with trauma and its consequences, but the specter of Captain America and the question of whether Sam would ultimately take up the shield took over the story in the end.</p>

<p>In “Loki,” the Asgardian discovers that everything is predestined, even his identity. Loki is supposed to be a villain, and he is supposed to lose. There are no other options. What the series asks is, how does a character whose purpose is simply to accentuate, by way of contrast, the strengths and flaws of others lead his own story?</p>

<p>Marvel risks undercutting itself with “Loki” and with each bit of narrative chaos introduced by its latest shows. How can anything have emotional stakes when there is always a loophole or deus ex machina around the corner? (Indeed, “Loki” takes place in a closed loop, which by the series’s end has reset.) And at what point does narrative consistency fall apart and give us an indecipherable jumble of contradicting events?</p>

<p>The franchise wants to subscribe to both a traditional mode of storytelling and a bit of narrative chaos in the form of time travel, multiple universes and nonlinear shifts in time and space — all of which allow for deviations from the main storyline. But the more variant stories we get, the more unstable and convoluted the whole structure becomes.</p>

<p>“Loki” is a fun touch of chaos for Loki fans, myself included, but it makes me wonder how much longer the relative order of the MCU franchise’s central chronology can sustain the backpedaling and jumps and reversals, even within their own pockets of time. The vast megaverse that is Marvel already hosts countless characters and stories, and yet having one in which Loki is still alive is infinitely more fun.</p>

<p>But as delightful as “Loki” is conceptually, to me it felt like simply a fun, diverting experiment. What Marvel will do with the results of this experiment is another story. This season’s cliffhanger ending means that the full measure of the series’s success and impact is still to come, whether in the second season promised in the finale or in the broader MCU.</p>

<p>Is “Loki” truly a variant within the MCU? Will it introduce reverberations throughout the films and TV shows going forward, or will it be essentially isolated in its own playful thought bubble? If the former, I suspect Marvel won’t be able to sustain the full heft of the master narrative, with all of those branches, forever — that is, unless Marvel fully embraces chaos and lets the MCU fracture into separate multiverses without such a restrictive overarching timeline. After all, if the god of mischief has taught us anything, it’s that a little bit of chaos can go a long way.<br />
