Both security troops in Imphal East and Churchandpur avoided shooting events between the two communities, when some armed individuals opened fire and fled to higher ground, according to the Army. However, there were no reports of injuries, and more efforts were underway.

There have been deadly communal confrontations in Manipur as a result of the Manipur High Court (HC) ordering the State to follow a 10-year-old recommendation to award Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the non-tribal Meitei population.

Manipur has suffered ethnic violence, with Chief Minister N Biren Singh announcing earlier this month that around 60 people had died. Houses have also been burned amid the rioting, with additional cases reported from various sections of the state.

The chief minister urged people to stay calm, stating that operations had been carried out against armed militants in numerous regions on the state's outskirts.

Efforts are being made to undertake peace discussions with all segments of society, and the government has been meeting with various peace committees constituted in response to the current situation in Manipur, he noted.

He also urged people not to engage in violent activities and not to trust or circulate false information and rumours that might cause animosity between various communities. He asked the public for&nbsp;support for the government's attempts to restore normalcy.

In light of the scenario, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit the state for three days.

At least 40 armed militants responsible for setting ablaze houses and killing civilians in violence-hit India’s northeastern state of Manipur were killed, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said on Sunday.

The CM said that the casualties were a result of fresh encounter&nbsp;between the security forces and the militants across different parts of the state. A few of the armed rebels were arrested as well.

“In retaliatory and defensive operations against militant groups who are using sophisticated arms against the civilian population, around 30 militants have been killed in different areas. A few have also been arrested by the security forces,” the chief minister said.

The army personnel were deployed in the state to neutralise the warring tribal communities in order to restore peace in the land.

However, some casualties also arose from the civilian side after two persons were killed and 12 injured in different instances during clashes between militants and security forces since the early hours of the day.

At Phayeng in Imphal West district, one person died and another sustained bullet injuries suspected militants from the Kuki tribe opened fire at them, police officials said.

"According to our information, firing has been reported from Sugnu in Kakching, Kangvi in Churachandpur, Kangchup in Imphal West, Sagolmang in Imphal East, Nungoipokpi in Bishenpur, Khurkhul in&nbsp;Imphal&nbsp;West and YKPI in Kangpokpi," an official told PTI news agency.

There is heavy army and paramilitary presence in the state, particularly in areas seen as sensitive.

The root cause of the violence is said to have arisen out of the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status, which the Gauhati High Court supported.

The hill tribes in Manipur feel it would be unfair to grant the majority Meitei community ST status, and would impinge on their right to jobs and education.

The violence has impacted the daily life of the residents as essential prices of commodities have been reportedly rising owing to the conflict.

This comes after miscreants had torched abandoned houses and cars and also shot three people, earlier this week. In light of these incidents, the district authorities have cancelled the curfew relaxation.&nbsp;

As per media reports, citing local officials, a 29-year-old man, Toijam Chandramani was shot dead after armed youths had raided a few villages in Bishnupur district. The victim was said to be in a critical state and was transferred to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.&nbsp;

The curfew was previously relaxed for the day from 5:00 am to 4:00 pm (local time) excluding a few areas in the Imphal East district was stopped&nbsp;while the curfew was re-imposed in Bishnupur district.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This comes as the state has witnessed sporadic incidents of violence since the ethnic clashes between the tribal Kuki and the non-tribal Meitei communities first broke out, earlier this month. According to the media reports citing officials, some 10,000 personnel from the Indian Army and Assam Rifles and at least 7,000 from the CRPF and Border Security Force (BSF) have been deployed in the violence-hit state where over 70 people have lost their lives.&nbsp;

The latest flare-up was reported in many parts of the state on May 21, with the capital Imphal city facing the brunt of it. Miscreants torched abandoned houses and cars and also shot three people. The injured were admitted to a nearby hospital and said to be safe.

A group of Indian armed forces— the Army &amp; Assam Rifles regime—were deployed to the scene to maintain law and order.

PTI news agency reported that no casualties have been recorded due to the arson.

"Three Army/ Assam Rifles columns were launched in response to input of four armed suspects threatening the shopkeepers at New Chekon area and then subsequently moving to New Lambulane area of Imphal East district. The area was quickly cordoned by the joint team of Army, Assam Rifles, police and Rapid Action Force (RAF),” a statement by the Indian Army read.

&nbsp;“Swift action resulted in immediate control of crowd which gathered and consequently, three suspects along with two single barrel 12 bore guns were apprehended and handed over to the police."

Chief Minister Biren Singh confirmed the developments and asserted that strict punishment would be meted out against those involved.

According to reports, three people, including a former MLA, were taken into custody on Monday for their alleged involvement in violence.

Local media reports stated that Monday’s incident took place in the New Checkon market area of New Lambulane in Imphal East district around 2 pm.

Some miscreants torched the houses of those who fled the violence that erupted earlier this month.

Before the arson, a clash had erupted in the main market in New Checkon—an area said to be the home to a mix of Kuki, Meitei and other ethnic groups.

<h2>Former MLA among three held</h2>

On Sunday morning during relaxation in curfew, a group of people armed with firearms and led by the former MLA allegedly asked traders belonging to a particular community to close their shops.

Due to the violence, the Manipur government&nbsp;extended the restrictions on internet services for another five days till 3 pm on May 26.

Around 10,000 Army and Assam Rifles jawans are currently deployed in the state. Security forces are conducting aerial surveillance by unmanned aerial vehicles and Cheetah helicopters, PTI news agency reported.

Though internet services remained suspended since the violence started, it is reported that the warring Meitei and Kuki community people living outside the state are spreading hatred in their social media posts.

“We need to engage in talks by sitting together to bring in normalcy and restore peace,” the chief minister said.

Nearly 73 died and around 250 were injured as a result of the&nbsp;ethnic violence that broke out in Manipur on May 3.&nbsp;Thousands of men and women have taken shelter in the neighbouring districts of Mizoram and Assam. Moreover, heavy security presence was witnessed in many areas as army troops, rapid action force, and central police forces were visible in all major areas and roads, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the paramilitary forces continued with their anti-militant operations as five hill-based ultras were killed and two India Reserve Battalion jawans were injured in two separate encounters in Churachandpur district on Friday night, police said.

An encounter ensued at Saiton in Churachandpur district between the security forces and the militants in which four militants were gunned down, the police said.

It was reported that the militants opened fire at security forces at Torbung forcing them to return the fire. In the exchange of fire, one militant was killed and two IRB jawans were injured, the police said.

So far, 13,000 people have been rescued and shifted to safe shelters, a defence spokesperson said, adding that the army brought Churachandpur, Moreh, Kakching, and Kangpokpi districts under its "firm control".

"In the past 12 hours, Imphal East and West districts witnessed sporadic incidents of arson and attempts by inimical elements to establish blockades. However, the situation was controlled by a firm and synergised response," the defence official said on Friday night.

PTI quoting sources claimed that the fighting between communities left scores of people dead and nearly a hundred injured. But the officials are yet to confirm this.

"Prompt response by security forces led to rescuing of civilians of all communities from various minority pockets of areas affected by violence. As a result, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Moreh, and Kakching are now under firm control with no major violence reported since yesterday night," the spokesperson added.

How did the violence unfold?

As per a senior police official, thousands took to the streets and participated in the rally after which clashes turned violent between tribal and non-tribal residents.

As the violence grew to more regions in the state, internet services were suspended to curb the spread of hate speech and video messages by the anti-social elements.

The Manipur government issued a statement saying that the internet services in the Indian state have been suspended for five days "amid the incidents of fighting among youths, and volunteers of different communities as a rally was organised by All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) Manipur in protest against the demand for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST category." 
&nbsp; 
"Some anti-social elements are using social media extensively for the transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public. Social media has also become a handy tool for rumour mongers and is being used to incite the general public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the State of Manipur," the statement read.

<h2>Administration imposes curfew</h2>

In view of the situation, a curfew has been imposed in non-tribal-dominated Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Jiribam, and Bishnupur districts, and tribal-dominated Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal districts.

"A report has been received from the Superintendent of Police, Churachandpur that there is a breach of peace, disturbance to public tranquility and grave danger to human lives and properties within the revenue jurisdiction of Churachandpur district. It is desirable that any breach of peace and disturbance to public tranquillity and danger to human lives and properties should be immediately prevented," read the statement by the district administration of Churachandpur.

"It is considered that movement of any person outside their residence is considered likely to cause a breach of peace, disturbance to public tranquillity and grave danger to human lives and properties," the statement further added.

On the evening of April 4, the government of Manipur issued shoot-at-sight orders to "maintain public order and tranquillity."

The order, passed by the Governor of Manipur, said, "The Governor of Manipur is pleased to authorize all District Magistrates, Sub-Divisional Magistrates and all Executive Magistrates/ Special executive Magistrates detailed by the District Magistrates to issue Shoot at sight orders in extreme cases whereby all forms of persuasion, warning, reasonable force, etc. had been exhausted under the provisions of law under CrPC, 1973."

Suspended mobile internet and broadband services services&nbsp;

Mobile services in the state were suspended across the state on Tuesday for five days with immediate effect but broadband services were operational till May 4. As the violence grew to more regions in the state, the governor issued a notice to suspend the broadband services as well for the next five days.&nbsp;

What led to violence in Manipur?

The violence in the state supposedly started because of CM Biren Singh’s recent drive to remove illegal immigrants from settlements in reserve forest areas. On the other hand, the Manipur High Court’s recent direction to the State Government to consider the inclusion of Meitei in ST has led to an outburst from the tribal communities.

The Meties make up 53 per cent of the state’s population, which accounts for a tenth of the former princely state’s land area. They claim they are facing problems in view of “large-scale illegal immigration by Myanmarese and Bangladeshis”.

Demands of the Metei community

The entire movement is spearheaded by one organisation, the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM), which is demanding the inclusion of Meties in the ST category. They said the demand is being made merely for reservation in jobs, educational institutions, and tax reliefs but “more to protect our ancestral land, culture and identity” which they claimed was being “threatened by illegal migration from Myanmar, Bangladesh and by people from outside the state.”

Mary spoke to the news agency ANI and said, "The situation in Manipur makes me unhappy... earlier I could not even imagine this much violence. Since last night it has become more frightening."

Evacuation of critically injured is in progress but bad weather and fresh landslides are hampering rescue operations, the North-East Frontier Railway CPRO said in a statement.

The Indian Army has been dispatched to join the search, but officials were not optimistic.

The chances of the remaining people surviving are very thin considering the fact that the landslide occurred around 2 am, Haulianlal Guite, District Magistrate of Noney district in Manipur, told Reuters by telephone.

This month unprecedented rains have lashed India’s northeastern states and neighbouring Bangladesh, killing more than 150 people.

“We're working hard but because of rains &amp; other factors, this happened. It is the main Tulum station where train was supposed to stop. Maybe because of heavy on-going work, some seismic disturbance may have taken place. 13 bodies yet taken out,” DGP P Doungel told ANI news agency on Wednesday evening.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited the affected site to take stock of the situation and assured to press more personal for the rescue operation.

“Visited Tupul to take stock of unfortunate landslide situation. I’m thankful to Hon’ble HM Shri Amit Shah Ji for calling me to assess the situation &amp; assured all possible assistance. A team of NDRF has already reached the site for rescue operation," tweeted Singh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is in touch with the minister and is constantly monitoring the situation.

"Spoke to Manipur CM N Biren Singh and reviewed the situation due to a tragic landslide. Assured all possible support from the Centre. I pray for the safety of all those affected. My thoughts are with bereaved families. May the injured recover soon," Modi tweeted.

As per an official of the Archaeological Survey of India,&nbsp;Artefacts&nbsp;dating back to 1600-2000 BC including weapons made of copper and pieces of pottery have been found&nbsp;in the Mainpuri district of&nbsp;India's Uttar Pradesh, reported PTI.

According to&nbsp;Raj Kumar Patel,&nbsp;ASI's Superintending Archaeologist of Agra Circle, the location where the objects were found in the&nbsp;Ganeshpura village of Kurawali tehsil belonged to the&nbsp;chalcolithic period, also known as the&nbsp;copper age.

&nbsp;A&nbsp;farmer had found&nbsp;the ochre colour pottery, anthropomorphic figures and the copper weapons in a field on June 10.

"Initially, he tried to hide these thinking that he got some precious objects," PTI&nbsp;quoted the official from the Archaeological Survey of India.

The official also added that&nbsp;police and the local administration recovered the objects from him later.

Patel told PTI, "We stayed for about eight days in the village and carried out a scientific investigation of the field from where the objects were found. It was found that the weapons and other objects found are 3800-4000 years old and belong to the chalcolithic or copper age. The weapons are of made pure copper."

The weapons included some swords measuring close to one metre long and harpoons of multiple&nbsp;types. Among the ones found, one&nbsp;of the harpoons has four edges.

Experts claim that according to the size of the objects, the weapons were seemingly used by&nbsp;warriors or the army.

According to Vasant Kumar Swarnkar, spokesperson of the Archaeological Survey of India, "such artefacts are typically&nbsp;found in the Ganga-Yamuna doab."

"Our investigation is on and only after proper investigation, we would be able to speak more on the findings," PTI quoted Swarnkar.
