<p>The women were later rescued by the police and when they were on their way to the police station, a mob of men ambushed them and took the women around two kilometres away from the police station.</p>

<p>The youngest woman’s father was killed on the spot, while the two women were forced to remove their clothes and stripped naked in front of the mob.</p>

<p>They also alleged that her brother was killed when trying to help her.</p>

<p>The women were later able to escape to the adjoining hill district of Tengnoupal and are said to be in relief camps.</p>

<p>The resolution denounced “in the strongest terms nationalistic rhetoric deployed by leading members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)”.</p>

<p>Hours later, India sharply slammed the European leaders, and asked them not to interfere in its internal matters and added that proper steps are being taken to ensure peace in the northeastern state.</p>

<p>The debate on the Manipur clashes was added to the parliament agenda on Wednesday to discuss about cases of breaches of human rights, democracy and the rule of law during its ongoing plenary session in Strasbourg, France.</p>

<p>The resolution said that there have been concerns about “politically motivated, divisive policies that promote Hindu majoritarianism in the area”.</p>

<p>“Whereas violence in India’s Manipur state has erupted along ethnic and religious lines between the mainly Hindu Meitei community and the Christian Kuki tribe, leading to a cycle of violence with over 100 people killed, over 40,000 displaced and the destruction of property and places of worship,” the resolution said.</p>

<p>“Whereas Manipur has previously faced secessionist insurgencies in which serious human rights abuses were committed. Whereas, in the latest round of violence human rights groups have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government in Manipur and nationally of implementing divisive ethno-nationalistic policies which oppress in particular religious minorities.”</p>

<p>The remarks came during the Supreme Court's hearing of the matter after two petitions were filed.</p>

<p>The first plea was filed by the Manipur Tribal Forum Delhi seeking the protection of the Kuki tribe by the Indian Army.</p>

<p>The second petition was filed by the Chairman of the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Dinganglung Gangmei, challenging the direction of the Manipur High Court to consider the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list, which provides for reservation in educational institutes and jobs.</p>

<p>It was this issue of adding the Meitei community to the ST list that triggered the riots in the state.</p>

<h2><strong>‘State-sponsored violence’</strong></h2>

<p>The hearing witnessed a brief heated moment after the lawyer of one of the petitioners, senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, alleged that the unrest in Manipur is "state-sponsored violence".</p>

<p>This invited a sharp retort from Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud who said, "We do not want this platform to be used for further escalation of violence in the state."</p>

<p>While responding to a plea asking for SC’s intervention to stop the violence, the two-judge bench said, “We can only monitor the steps being taken by the state and pass certain orders if there are additional measures that can be taken. But we can't run the security apparatus."</p>

<p>While submitting the updated status report on Monday, government’s counsel Tushar Mehta said, “We, on this side, are for the public...The matter may be taken up by the petitioner with the utmost sensitivity because any misinformation may aggravate the situation in the State. Things are returning to normalcy after a lot of efforts from the central and state government.”</p>

<p>After observing the report, CJI Chandrachud asked Gonsalves, who is representing the Manipur Tribal Forum, to “have a look at the status report”.</p>

<p>“Come here with concrete suggestions, we will give them to the SG (Mehta), and have them consider the same. Formulate them by tomorrow."</p>

<p>&nbsp;The Manipur government submitted the latest status report on the situation while the hearing on the same will resume on Tuesday.</p>

<p>The court will hear the matter next tomorrow.</p>

<p>Garcetti's comment drew a sharp response from Indian National Congres (INC) leader Manish Tewari, who said it was perhaps the first time he has&nbsp;heard a US envoy make a comment of such nature.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“To the best of my recollection going back atleast 4 decades in Public life I have never heard an US Ambassador making a statement of this nature about the internal affairs of India. We faced Challenges in Punjab, J&amp;K , North East over the decades and surmounted those with sagacity &amp; wisdom," Tewari said in a tweet.</p>

<p>“There is gun violence in the US &amp; several people are killed. We never told the US to learn from us as to how to rein that in. US faces riots over racism. We never told them that we will lecture them… Perhaps it is important for the new Ambassador to take cognisance of the history of India-US relations," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Indian consulate attacked</strong></h2>

<p>While Garcetti talked of US intervention in India's internal affairs, the Indian consulate in San Franciso was attacked for the second time in under four months by Khalistani extremists with the authorities failing to nab the suspects.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Asked about the situation, Garcetti gave a diplomatic answer saying the Biden administration was&nbsp;doing 'everything' to ensure the safety of Indians.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"As a diplomat myself, we take any breaches seriously. People cannot be attacked or see acts of arson at places where they work. The US will do everything to protect them and their families with the help of law enforcement agencies. We will have this investigated," said Garcetti.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I called the police chief when the attack in San Francisco took place and asked him to take immediate action. We will not leave any stone unturned to avoid future instances of violence," he added.&nbsp;</p>

India: Demand for president's rule in Manipur after woman fatally shot outside school

<p>A mob allegedly attacked a camp of the Indian Reserved Battalion (IRB) in Manipur's Thoubal district and tried to loot weapons. The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday (July 4). The incident led to a clash with the security forces in which a 27-year-old man was killed and jawans of Assam Rifles were shot at. The mob reportedly tried to storm the camp of the 3rd IRB battalion in the Khangabok area.<br />

Besides,&nbsp;a man, identified as David Thiek was killed and beheaded in Langza, which is a Hmar-Kuki village in Churachandpur district. The incident had&nbsp;taken place on Sunday, said reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The armed forces tried to bring the situation under control and used teargas shells and rubber bullets. Press Trust of India has reported citing officials that the armed mob opened fire at the soldiers and the forces retaliated the&nbsp;firing.</p>

<p>The mob also blocked the roads leading to the camp at multiple locations to prevent reinforcements from reaching there, but the forces moved through, they said.</p>

<p>The mob attacked a team of the Assam Rifles that was on the way to the camp. They fired on the Assam Rifles personnel, in which a jawan was injured, and torched their vehicle, officials said.</p>

<p>The jawan was shot in the leg, they said.</p>

<p>The clashes&nbsp;saw a man, identified as Ronaldo, getting shot. He was first taken to the Thoubal district hospital and later to a hospital in Imphal. His condition was critical and officials said that he died on the way to the state capital.</p>

<p>Ten others were also injured in the clashes, they said.</p>

<p>The situation is under control at present, they added.</p>

<p>The incident took place a day after Manipur insurgent groups, United People's Front (UPF) and National Organisation (KNO), decided to lift the blockade at Kangui (Kangpokpi) on NH2 with immediate effect to ensure an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities in the violence-hit state.</p>

<p>UPF spokesperson Aaron Kipgen and KNO spokesperson Seilen Haokip said, "Notwithstanding the anger and anguish of the Kuki Zo people, keeping in view Amit Shah, Union Home Minister's deep concern to restore peace and harmony in the State and alleviate the plight of people in general, the United People's Front and Kuki National Organisation have decided to lift the blockade at Kangui (Kangpokpi) on NH2 with immediate effect to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities in the State. The decision was taken after wide-ranging consultations with Civil Society organisations, village chiefs, youth, and women's leaders on several occasions."</p>

The ongoing conflict has disturbed the traditional communal harmony in the state of Manipur. The Kuki Zo people have suffered immensely from continued offensives by miscreants and have urged the authorities to protect their lives and properties," said the statement.</p>

<p>"We appreciate that central forces have been deployed in most of these areas as assured, and the process is in progress. Once the deployment of Central Forces is completed in all vulnerable areas, we will ensure that our volunteers are withdrawn from these areas to help restore peace and tranquility. It is expected that the concerned authorities will take every measure to maintain peace and ensure the supply of essential commodities to the needy, particularly in the hill districts. We also take this opportunity to appeal to all peace-loving organisations and citizens in the State of Manipur to reciprocate our gesture and take steps towards peace and communal harmony in the State," said the press statement issued by UPF and KNO.</p>

Manipur: Kuki militant group leader's house burnt down by miscreants day after blockade on highway lifted

<p>The violence in the northeast Indian state of Manipur continues. At least three “village volunteers” were killed and five others injured after an exchange of fire with unidentified gunmen in the Bishnupur district, said the police, on Sunday (July 2). Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh went to the spot where the incident occurred to take stock of the situation.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What do we know about the recent incident?</strong></h2>

<p>The shooting incident, as per the local police, took place on Saturday night when “village volunteers” were guarding the area in a makeshift bunker, reported PTI. The recent incident took place in the Khoijumantabi village. Initially, the police found two bodies while the third one was recovered sometime later.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, some of the five were injured due to the shootout which is said to have lasted for hours. Some people who were also reported to be in serious condition were taken to a hospital in Imphal. Meanwhile, an association of the Hmar community said that one of those killed by “terrorists” were from their tribe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hmar Students’ Association, in a statement, said, “We request the central government to provide increased security measures and support to the Kuki-Hmar-Zomi-Mizo community.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as the state has been facing one of its worst ethnic flare-ups in recent decades which broke out between the valley-majority Meitei and the hill-majority Kuki tribes nearly two months ago. More than 100 people lost their lives due to the fighting.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Kuki groups withdraw roadblocks on Manipur NH 2</strong></h2>

<p>In what is being described as a major development in the state, United Peoples’ Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO), two prominent Kuki umbrella organisations, on Sunday, announced that they are lifting the roadblocks on National Highway 2 in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a joint statement, the organisations said that given India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s “deep concern to restore peace and harmony in the State and alleviate the plight of people in general,” they have decided to lift the blockade with “immediate effect to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities in the State.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>They added, “The decision was taken after wide ranging consultations with Civil Society Organisations, village chiefs, youth and women leaders on several occasions.” &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Manipur CM visits the site of the incident</strong></h2>

<p>CM N Biren Singh who had offered to resign, earlier this week, visited the site of the incident, on Sunday to take stock of the situation as well as interact with the locals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hitting out at PM Modi, Ramesh said, "But what of its much-celebrated former Pracharak, who now controls the administrative machinery at the Centre and in the state? Has he outsourced the public appeal to the organisation that moulded him? When will Mr Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, say something, do something on Manipur? Is he only a Prachar Mantri and not Pradhan Mantri?"</p>

Manipur violence: Indian Army soldier injured in firing in Imphal west

<p>Fresh violence broke out in the conflict-torn Indian state of Manipur on Friday night as reports emerged of automatic weapons firing from Kangvai in Churachandpur district and Kwakta in Bishnupur district and intermittent bursts of firing took place on Saturday morning, stated police and army sources.<br />

There were also reports of mob build-up and attempted arson and vandalism. State police and joint forces of the Army, Assam Rifles, and Rapid Action Force undertook a Flag March in the Imphal East district late at midnight.</p>

<h2><strong>Two civilians injured in mob dispersal</strong></h2>

<p>According to the report, arson was attempted at the Palace Compound near Advance Hospital. Last evening, a mob of around 1,000 people congregated and attempted vandalism and arson.</p>

Around 200 to 300 people had collected near Thongju at 10.40 pm local time and tried to vandalise the local MLA's residence.<br />

A column of the RAF dispersed the crowd. Last night, another mob attempted to vandalise Iringbam Police Station in the Imphal West district. At 11:40 pm local time, 300 to 400 people gathered outside the police station and tried to ransack it. The RAF dispersed the crowd.<br />

According to the sources of the Army, the office of the country's ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was surrounded by a mob of 200 to 300 people around midnight at Sinjemai, and the crowd was dispersed by an Army column.<br />

The mob gathered also tried to vandalise state BJP president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi's residence in Imphal West at midnight, however, their efforts were foiled by the Army and RAF. According to the Army, the crowd was dispersed.</p>

<p>Despite the presence of nine security escort personnel, five security guards and eight additional guards, the mob power prevailed. Fortunately enough, Singh wasn't at his house and nobody got injured when the arsonists threw 'petrol bombs' and started the fire.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Second attack on ministers' house</strong></h2>

<p>"We couldn't prevent the incident as the mob was overwhelming and we couldn't control the situation. They threw petrol bombs from all directions - from the bylane behind the building and from the front entrance -&nbsp;so we simply couldn't control the mob," L Dineshwor Singh, Escort Commander, said.</p>

<p>Commenting on the violence, Singh said it was 'unfortunate' that such incidents&nbsp;were taking place in his home state.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am currently in Kerala for official work. Thankfully, nobody got injured last night at my Imphal home. The miscreants came with petrol bombs and damage has been done to the ground floor and first floor of my home," Singh was quoted as saying by ANI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is very sad to see what is happening in my home state.&nbsp;I will still continue to appeal for peace. Those indulging in this kind of violence are absolutely inhuman."</p>

<p>Notably, this was the second instance when the minister's home was targetted by the rioters, according to <em>The New Indian Express</em>. In May, a similar attack was thwarted when the security personnel fired in the air to disperse the mob. The attack followed a recent meeting, chaired by Singh, with&nbsp;a group of intellectuals from&nbsp;Meitei and Kuki communities to discuss how to bring peace to the violence-hit northeast state.</p>
