<p>The EU Parliament in early July adopted a motion that blamed “Hindu majoritarianism” for the ethnic clashes, in an attempt at painting the conflict in religious colours.</p>

<p>The EU resolution denounced “in the strongest terms nationalistic rhetoric deployed by leading members of the BJP party.”</p>

<p>It reflects the intellectual bankruptcy of EU lawmakers. Anyone who claims Manipur violence is a direct result of BJP’s ‘Hindu nationalistic policies’, is either unaware of history and facts or is being driven by vested interests.</p>

<h2><strong>Manipur: A history of violence</strong></h2>

<p>To begin with, tribal clashes in Manipur date back to the pre-colonial era, when Nagas and Meitei would often rise up against each other and vie for dominance. Interestingly, it was the Europeans who further complicated the ethnic equation in Manipur during the colonial era.</p>

<p>Britishers came in and sided up with the Meiteis, who primarily used to live in the valley area. The colonialists would help Meiteis defend against Nagas, who used to live up in the hills.</p>

<p>Then in the later years, Britishers came up with a plan to resettle Kuki tribals from neighbouring Burma (Now Myanmar) in the foothills of Manipur, who would act as a shield for the valley-dwellers Meiteis and absorb all hostilities of the Nagas.</p>

<p>So, thanks to the British rulers, Manipur’s already-fragile ethnic structure was further complicated to serve interests of imperial Britain. Now, the state had three tribes—Nagas, Meiteis and Kukis—who hated each other, would often fight armed rebellions and vie for control over the region.</p>

<h2><strong>Continuing rivalries​</strong></h2>

<p>Recent ethnic clashes in the Manipur state stem from tensions between the Meiteis and Kukis. Meiteis are primarily Hindus, who make up 53 per cent of the state’s total population but live only in 10 per cent land area in the valley. On the other hand, the Kukis constitute 28 per cent of Manipur’s population but live in 90 per cent land area in the hills.</p>

<p>Indian constitution acknowledges the Kuki community as one of the country’s most disadvantaged groups, a status which gives them special governmental benefits such as quotas in jobs and education.</p>

<p>However, Meiteis are now demanding the same benefits, as they fear increasing immigration of the Kukis from Myanmar following the 2021 coup there would make them a minority in their own state. This has led to the eruption of deadly violence among Meiteis and Kukis, which has so far claimed more than 150 lives.</p>

<p>While it is understandable that the state administration could have done a better job at curtailing the violence in the state, blaming BJP’s so-called majoritarian policies for violence is sheer ignorance.</p>

<h2>What is Indian govt doing to quell violence in Manipur?​</h2>

<p>In fact, the union government has taken a slew of measures since the violence broke out in the state on May 3.</p>

<p>On May 3 itself, the central government swiftly took action by engaging with Manipur's top leadership and deploying available Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) units.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An additional 124 CAPF companies and 184 Indian Army/Assam Rifles columns were deployed to reinforce security and maintain law and order.</p>

<p>Delving deep into history is a prerequisite for one to understand the complexities involved in such cases of ethnic clashes, especially when talking about one of the most diverse countries on the planet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Issuing sweeping statements would only diminish public understanding of the matter, which may further aggravate the law and order situation on the ground.</p>

Opposition MPs from INDIA alliance reach violence-hit Manipur to assess ground situation

Manipur is reeling from the ethnic violence for almost about three months now. The Kuki and Meitei tribes are fighting each other on a whole host of different issues. The quest is to gain and preserve political representation and economic opportunities for the group and this is what launched the hard violence. An estimated 160 people so far have been killed. The months-long unrest has seen Humanity at its worst in this state. The security forces within the state have been unable to restore peace and security.

<p>AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday (July 28) called out&nbsp;Indian Home Minister Amit Shah for reportedly questioning the release time of the sexual assault video of two Kuki women in the northeastern state of Manipur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shah said on Thursday (July 27) that a probe into the sexual assault of two&nbsp; women in the crisis-hit state, who were paraded naked by a group of men, will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shah said a total of seven cases linked to the violence in Manipur will be handled by CBI. The Centre has also requested the Supreme Court to shift these trials outside the state.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Media reports citing sources said that the one who allegedly recorded the video has been arrested and the mobile phone was also confiscated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The delegation of more than 20 opposition MPs will visit Manipur this weekend and will take a first-hand account of the situation in the state, Congress whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore told PTI.</p>

<p>Sources said that one MP each from parties of INDIA bloc or their representatives are expected to be part of the delegation.</p>

<p>The delegation will visit both the valley and the hill regions of the state and meet different communities there. They will also visit some relief camps.</p>

<p>TMC's Sushmita Dev, JMM's Mahua Maji and NCP's Vandana Chavan are likely to be part of the delegation.</p>

India: Delegation of MPs from opposition bloc INDIA to visit Manipur

<p>A fresh spell of violence was reported in India’s northeastern state of Manipur early Wednesday as an intense gunfight between security forces and armed groups turned the town of Moreh into a war zone.</p>

<p>A raging mob in the Indian town located on the Myanmar border burnt down 30 houses and shops that were left abandoned since ethnic violence in the state emerged initially in the early days of May.</p>

<p>Times of India reported that the mob gathered in the area at 9:30 am IST, and they spent their next three hours torching and burning down the houses and shops. Even a guest house owned by the Forest Department was damaged.</p>

<h2><strong>CM N Biren Singh condemns violence</strong></h2>

<p>Chief Minister of Manipur state, N Biren Singh condemned the violence later on Wednesday while speaking at a Kargil Vijay Diwas function in the capital city of Imphal.</p>

<p>He claimed that the tensions began when the authorities started cracking down on drug cartels operating at the border.</p>

<h2><strong>What Amit Shah said</strong></h2>

<p>As per an NDTV report, during a brief address in Lok Sabha, Amit Shah urged the Opposition leaders to permit a debate on the matter, emphasising the importance of revealing the truth about the Manipur incident.&nbsp;However, the House was adjourned thrice due to the ongoing protests over the Manipur situation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the beginning of&nbsp;the Monsoon Session of Parliament, seeking a discussion on the situation in Manipur, at least 15 Opposition MPs reportedly&nbsp;submitted adjournment notices.&nbsp;While the central government has agreed to discuss the matter, it has faced chaos over a technicality.</p>

<h2><strong>Opposition demands and the discussion dilemma</strong></h2>

<p>The Opposition MPs demand&nbsp;that the matter be discussed under Rule 267, which calls for the suspension of all businesses in the House to focus on a specific matter. In the Rajya Sabha, 27 MPs even presented notices to raise discussion under the said rule.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the Centre said it&nbsp;was only willing to participate in a discussion under Rule 176&nbsp;—&nbsp;which provides for a short-duration debate.</p>

<p>A two-month-old video from India’s Manipur, showing a mob of men parading two women naked and sexually assaulting them, recently went viral, triggering massive outrage on social media. Now, it turns out that the two women were not the only ones who were sexually molested and raped on the same day in the state.</p>

<p>Recent media reports suggest that two more women from Manipur’s Kangpokpi district were sexually assaulted, and then murdered on May 4, at a site nearly 40 km away from where the other viral video incident took place. Both ladies, aged 21 and 24, were targeted by a mob of men and women.</p>

<p>Astonishingly, some women in the mob reportedly encouraged the men to sexually assault the girls, whom they had abducted from a nearby car wash centre.</p>

<h2><strong>FIR registered on May 16th</strong></h2>

<p>NDTV reported that the identities of the victims were initially kept hidden due to fear of stigma; however, a Zero FIR report was eventually registered with police on May 16.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Their dead bodies are not yet recovered, and their whereabouts are also not known till date," the FIR read. It also mentioned that the mob consisted of nearly 200 persons, including men and women.</p>

<p>However, police have so far failed to make any arrests in this&nbsp;case, which has also been brought to the notice of the National Commission for Women (NCW) by two women rights activists and the North American Manipur Tribal Association.</p>

<h2><strong>Opposition to hold protests in Parliament</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile the Members of Parliament (MPs) from India’s opposition parties will hold protests on Monday near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the parliament complex, reported&nbsp;the&nbsp;Indian Express.</p>

The official media handle of Manipur Police on Twitter&nbsp;said,"6 (six) including 1 (one) Juvenile Arrested/Apprehended. As regard to the viral video of 2 (two) women on May 4, 2023, another accused was arrested today. Altogether 6 (six) persons including 5 (five) main accused and one juvenile have been arrested and apprehended in the case so far."<br />

Emerging from the state, these horrifying events are the latest testament to a tragedy that has unfolded, claiming the lives of at least 125 people and leaving over 40,000 displaced since the outbreak of violence on May 3rd.</p>

<p>The visuals of a man's head being chopped off have surfaced from&nbsp;the ongoing ethnic conflict in northeast India's Manipur. The latest video has surfaced barely two days after the footage of women being paraded naked before one of them was gangraped by members of a rampaging mob.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident reportedly occurred on July 2, when the man, part of a group of volunteers keeping guard was hacked to death by a rampaging mob.</p>

<p>The man has been identified as David Theik, a resident of Lamza village in Churachandpur district and until the pandemic, was working as a waiter at a hotel in Mumbai. His father is physically disabled while his mother died when he was young. David was reportedly planning to go back to Mumbai but was stuck in the ethnic conflict that gripped the state since the beginning of May.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a report in Hindustan Times, Theik was first shot, then his body was severed, and one of his eyes gouged out.</p>

<p>The chopped head was then placed atop a bamboo fence.</p>

<h2><strong>Manipur violence: Police begins efforts to maintain calm</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, Manipur police have made fifth arrest in connection with the case of two women being paraded naked on May 4. A manhunt continues to track down a dozen suspects who could be seen in the viral video with Chief Minister N Biren Singh stating that he is personally monitoring the search operations.</p>

<p>Raids are being conducted at many suspected hideouts, the state government said, amid an atmosphere that continues to be tense and&nbsp;volatile.</p>
