Maharashtra on Saturday (September 26) declared drought in 265 of 358 tehsils, covering around three-fourths of the state. The announcement comes as the state has experienced prolonged rainfall deficits and dry spells that have affected crops across large parts of Maharashtra this year. The declaration prompted an immediate assessment of crop losses and a series of relief measures for farmers that include waiver of land revenue, restructuring of crop loans and a stay on recovery of agriculture-related loans. However, the state will announce the financial assistance for crop damage separately after the assessment is completed, according to a report by the Indian Express. The move comes two days after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, following his tour of rain-deficit areas, assured of issuing a formal drought notification. The Government Resolution states that the Agriculture Commissioner’s report identified a drought-like situation in 265 talukas from June onwards, attributing this to rainfall shortfalls and other contributing factors. These regions have been found to meet the criteria for Trigger 1, defined as a continuous dry spell of at least 21 days without meaningful rainfall during the monsoon season. Also read: Jailed gangster Dhilla granted 12-hour parole to marry Cambodian partner amid heavy security
DC directs to initiate crop loss assessments
District Collectors have been instructed to promptly initiate crop loss assessments through panchnamas. A 24-year-old Mumbai businessman has found himself at the centre of a security breach investigation after allegedly posing as a Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) official to enter a high-security venue in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Rohan Premal Parekh, a resident of Khar, was arrested by Mumbai Police along with his bodyguard, Dilip Rajaram Kunde, after the duo allegedly attempted to enter Jio World Plaza on Monday, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to attend the Global Fintech Fest in BKC. Police have clarified that the incident has no connection with PM Narendra Modi’s scheduled event.
Who is Rohan Parekh?
According to police and court proceedings, Parekh is a 24-year-old businessman and the son of a diamond merchant. He has a graduate degree in mathematics and physics from a university in the United Kingdom. Parekh is also reported to have an interest in drone technology. His family has business links to the diamond trade, while his uncle reportedly operates a drone equipment business. Police allege that Parekh identified himself as a PMO official when he arrived at Jio World Plaza with two other men.He reportedly showed a digital identity card on his phone claiming to be issued by the PMO. The group was stopped after security personnel noticed that one of the accompanying men was carrying a firearm.
How did the security breach unfold?
The incident took place on Monday evening, when security arrangements were being tightened in BKC ahead of PM Modi’s visit.According to investigators, Parekh arrived at Jio World Plaza at around 4:50 pm in a Mercedes along with two men, his bodyguard Dilip Kunde and his associate Prathamesh Bagul. Kunde, a former serviceman, was carrying a licensed revolver and six live cartridges. He allegedly claimed to be associated with the Special Protection Group (SPG). The suspicious identity claims triggered further verification. CCTV footage was examined and police traced the Mercedes to Parekh, eventually leading investigators to his Khar residence. Parekh and Kunde were subsequently arrested, while Bagul remains wanted, according to police. Both arrested accused have been remanded in police custody until September 11.
Did Parekh really believe he worked for the PMO?
This is one of the key questions now being investigated. Parekh’s lawyer has told the court that her client may himself have been the victim of a fraud. According to the defence, Parekh was allegedly contacted around two years ago by a man identified as Tarun Kapoor, who offered him a PMO-related job with a monthly salary of ₹68,000. The lawyer claimed Parekh was provided with an offer letter, a digital identity card and a letter purportedly signed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was allegedly told that he would work on defence policy. The defence has argued that these documents convinced Parekh that he had genuinely been offered a government position.Police, however, are investigating the authenticity and origin of the documents and the circumstances in which Parekh allegedly used the identity card to gain access to a sensitive location.
What happens next?
The case has now been transferred to the Mumbai Crime Branch’s Crime Intelligence Unit for further investigation. Investigators are examining CCTV footage, the alleged PMO identity card and other material recovered during the probe. Police are also searching for Prathamesh Bagul, the third person allegedly accompanying Parekh and Kunde. The investigation will focus on whether Parekh knowingly impersonated a government official or whether, as his defence claims, he was himself deceived by individuals who allegedly supplied him with fraudulent documents. For now, Parekh remains in police custody, and the allegations against him are yet to be established in court.

Three newborn babies have died after a fire broke out in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the District Women’s Hospital in Amravati in the early hours of Monday. The incident occurred at around 3:30 am, triggering a frantic evacuation operation inside the hospital. According to the latest reports, 39 newborns were admitted to the SNCU when the fire broke out. Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff rushed to the unit and began evacuating the babies from the affected area. Medical equipment was disconnected and the newborns were moved to safer locations. Three infants died after suffering severe burns and smoke inhalation. Six critically affected newborns were shifted to a nearby Super Speciality Hospital for further treatment. The condition of the remaining babies is being monitored as authorities assess the full impact of the incident.
What caused the fire?
The exact cause of the blaze is yet to be officially established. Initial reports said the fire may have followed an electrical fault, while the latest reports indicate that a ventilator reportedly exploded in the neonatal unit. An investigation is expected to establish whether an electrical malfunction, equipment failure or another factor triggered the blaze. The incident has once again brought hospital fire safety into focus, particularly in neonatal units where many patients are premature, critically ill or dependent on equipment for basic life support.
Amravati has witnessed a similar incident before
Monday's tragedy is particularly significant because the same Amravati hospital witnessed a fire-related emergency in September 2022. At that time, a fire broke out in the NICU of the government-run hospital, where 37 newborns were being treated. Twelve infants who were on ventilator support were among those rescued. Hospital staff and firefighters managed to evacuate the babies safely, and there were no reported deaths in that incident. There was also a fatal neonatal fire in Amravati in May 2017. Four newborn babies lost their lives after a short circuit reportedly triggered a fire involving an incubator at Punjabrao Deshmukh Hospital and Medical College. The incident was part of a series of neonatal-unit fires reported in the Vidarbha region.
Maharashtra's history of deadly neonatal fires
The latest tragedy also recalls the devastating Bhandara hospital fire of January 2021, when 10 newborn babies died after a fire broke out in the Special Newborn Care Unit of the district hospital. Seventeen infants were inside the unit at the time, and seven were rescued. Reports said several of the babies died from smoke inhalation and burns. In Amravati, authorities are now expected to investigate the precise cause of Monday's fire, assess whether all mandatory fire-safety systems were functional and determine whether any lapses contributed to the deaths. The investigation will also be crucial in establishing accountability and preventing another tragedy in a unit meant to protect the hospital's most vulnerable patients.

Hospital staff succeeded in evacuating several infants from the ward, with six of them subsequently moved to a super-speciality facility for continued care. Police arrived at the scene and began an initial investigation, though the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Maharashtra has earmarked 203 pending cases for trial across 23 designated courts, encompassing not just violations under the Centre’s Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, but also cases filed under the state’s Maharashtra Prevention of Malpractices at University, Board and Other Specified Examinations Act, 1982. Maharashtra is one of the first states to set up dedicated fast-track courts for exam-related offences. This decision considerably expanded the range of cases to be heard by the special courts. A review of the identified cases reveals they span beyond paper leak cases, covering a wide range of examination-related offences, from cheating during Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams to alleged malpractices in recruitment tests for government positions, including those for the police and municipal bodies. These cases have been filed under a combination of laws: the 1982 state legislation, the 2024 central act, relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code or Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the Information Technology Act. Senior NCP (SP) leaders Jitendra Awhad and Jayant Patil met Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at his official residence in Mumbai, Maharashtra, on Thursday night (July 16, 2026). The development bolsters speculation that the opposition party was close to aligning with the NDA. Reports indicated that people aware of the matter said the closed-door meeting between the three leaders lasted for about an hour. Shinde has also postponed his departure to New Delhi for an NDA meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to meet both leaders in Mumbai. The meeting took place a day after NCP (SP) national working president Supriya Sule said the party could back a constitutional amendment bill on women's reservation and delimitation if the Centre agreed to its demands. She, however, stressed that the party had not yet taken an official stand on the matter. Also read: Prominent political and business leaders join family to pay respects as Nand Kishore Goenka's last rites held in Hisar
Jayant Patil visits Devendra Fadnavis' residence
On Tuesday evening, Jayant Patil visited Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' residence, where senior leaders of the rival NCP faction, Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare, were also present. Pune Rural Police have filed a non-cognisable (NC) offence against an unknown individual after an objectionable poster was found at the historic Sinhagad Fort's entrance in Maharashtra, claiming that "Muslims were not allowed to enter", a police official confirmed on Wednesday (July 15, 2026). A senior Pune Rural Police official claimed that the poster was noticed near the main entrance of the fort near the parking area on Wednesday, early in the morning. The poster was affixed to an old metal board, which was later removed quickly after officials were informed. A poster written in Marathi was found at the fort "belongs to Hindus" and that "Muslims are not allowed to enter." It also included the words "by order," allegedly to make it appear as an official directive. However, police clarified that no government department had issued such an order. A non-cognisable (NC) has been registered against an unidentified individual, and an investigation is underway to trace those responsible for putting up the poster. Also read: 'I am strong...': Sonam Wangchuk breaks silence as health deteriorates; Cong's Shashi Tharoor urges him to end fast
ATS found Pakistani connection
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Tuesday questioned 66 people from Pune district who were found to have been in contact with Pakistani gangster Shehzad Bhatti. The questioning was carried out at multiple locations with assistance from the Pune City Police Commissionerate, Pune Rural Police and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate. According to an official press release, the exercise began at 7 am. The action was initiated over suspicions that Bhatti had been using social media platforms to influence and encourage young people to participate in anti-national activities. On July 10, Maharashtra ATS began a statewide operation questioning 102 people found with suspicion of having a connection with Bhatti through social media. The exercise was launched by 58 ATS teams across the agency's 14 regional units in Maharashtra. According to the ATS, initial findings and inputs received from multiple agencies indicate that Bhatti and his associates reportedly used multiple or fake accounts on platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and WhatsApp to establish contact with Indian youth. The agency alleged that the network sought to exploit religious and other socially sensitive issues to fuel resentment and radicalise young people. It further claimed that unemployed and financially vulnerable youth were allegedly enticed with monetary incentives to take part in anti-national and anti-social activities. According to investigators, the network is also suspected of gathering sensitive information, facilitating drug smuggling, transporting illegal arms and establishing sleeper cells or local operatives to carry out activities that could threaten national security. The ATS has advised citizens, especially young people, to refrain from interacting with unknown or suspicious individuals on social media and urged parents to keep a close watch on their children's online activities. It also warned that stringent action would be taken against anyone found involved in activities that endanger the country's security.

In response to the poster, a non-cognisable (NC) has been registered against an unidentified individual, and an investigation is underway to trace those responsible for putting it up. The poster was affixed to an old metal board, which was later removed quickly after officials were informed.

Three individuals have been apprehended in connection with the assault on doctors and medical staff at a Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) hospital in the Thane district of Maharashtra. As a result, the incident has triggered outrage among the medical fraternity and political circles. The arrested individuals have been identified as Ramesh Pawar, Akshay Karande and Shailesh Nikam. All three were reportedly present along with Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Sukrya Mhatre when the assault took place at the civic-run Shastri Nagar Hospital. Police are also expected to record the statement of another victim as the investigation continues. The development comes after a video of doctors being assaulted at the hospital surfaced online quickly. The incident occurred on Monday evening at the KDMC-run Shastri Nagar Hospital in Kalyan after doctors Srishti Bawiskar and Vaibhav Salunkhe advised a newborn's family to shift the infant to another hospital because no beds were available in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), according to several media reports. According to police, the family allegedly contacted corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who arrived at the hospital with several associates. The group allegedly verbally abused and assaulted the two doctors, leaving Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe injured. A video of the incident, purportedly showing the corporator attacking the doctors, later circulated widely on social media, triggering widespread outrage. KDMC Medical Health Officer Dr Deepa Shukla, along with hospital staff, contacted the police late on Monday night. But even after approaching, no FIR was registered immediately, triggering protests from hospital employees due to the delay. They staged a “work-stop" agitation seeking action against those responsible. Meanwhile, Mhatre denied allegations that he assaulted women doctors or nursing staff, asserting that the CCTV footage may have given a misleading impression of the incident. “I express regret over the incident of assault that took place. Investigators are expected to rely heavily on forensic evidence and toxicology reports to establish the sequence of events leading up to Gangurde's death. Questions are likely to be raised regarding crowd management, availability of medical assistance, monitoring of alcohol consumption and emergency response protocols at concert venues. The tragedy comes weeks after the high-profile drug overdose deaths case linked to a music event at Mumbai's NESCO Exhibition Centre in Goregaon. In that case, two MBA students died after allegedly consuming ecstasy (MDMA), leading to multiple arrests and a wider investigation into a suspected drug supply network operating around music festivals and concerts. While police have not indicated any connection between the two incidents, the latest death is expected to intensify scrutiny of nightlife events and music concerts in the city. Awaiting Forensic Reports Officials have urged against speculation until the medical reports are available. The post-mortem examination and toxicology findings are expected to provide clarity on whether alcohol, drugs, a medical condition or any other factor contributed to the young man's death. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected once the forensic findings are submitted to the police.

A man arrested for reportedly attacking two security guards after asking their religion in the Thane district of Maharashtra had also studied maps of Mumbai's sensitive areas. The 31-year-old accused, identified as Zaib Zubair Ansari, was apprehended nearly an hour after he stabbed the guards at an under-construction building site in the Mira Road area, after they failed to recite the 'Kalma' or 'Kalima', on Monday. Ansari had lived in the United States with his parents from 2000 to 2020 before returning to India after his work permit expired. According to media reports, he had been viewing radical content and studying maps of sensitive locations in Mumbai, along with tactical guides related to “lone wolf” attacks. An individual has been arrested in Maharashtra's Amravati for allegedly sexually exploiting at least 180 minor girls and recording over 350 obscene videos. Action was taken after a BJP MP filed a complaint. The accused, identified as Mohammad Ayaz, also popularly known as Tanveer, a resident of Paratwada city, reportedly lured the girls into a "love trap," took them to Mumbai and Pune, and filmed obscene videos. These footages were allegedly used to blackmail the girls and compel them into prostitution. In a memorandum submitted by Rajya Sabha MP Anil Bonde to Superintendent of Police (Rural) Vishal Anand, it was revealed that this footage was widely shared online, too. He also warned of staging protests in front of the SP's office on Wednesday morning if a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is not formed, according to NDTV.
Accused associated with AIMIM in past
Meanwhile, members of the Muslim community also approached the police, urging strict action against the accused and emphasising that such incidents should not damage the community’s reputation. The accused, Mohammad Ayaz, was reportedly associated with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen in the past. Visuals shared on his social media showed him receiving a letter from party figures and creating reels at rallies. However, several of these posts were deleted after the case surfaced. Police acted quickly, arresting Ayaz and presenting him before a court, which remanded him to seven days of police custody. His mobile phone has been seized, and officials say it contains multiple objectionable videos. Investigators are now examining whether the videos have been shared by the accused with his friends or a criminal syndicate. Six children who had performed at their school's annual function in Dindori on Friday night were dead by midnight, along with three adults who had attended the event. The tragedy occurred when the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a well while they were returning home, about 20 km from Nashik in Maharashtra. All the deceased were from the Durgade family, who were transported by three ambulances to Indore village in Dindori, where relatives conducted the last rites. The accident affected four families, all connected through two sets of brothers, according to a report by the Indian Express. Ajay Durgade, the 14-year-old cousin of one of the girls who performed, remains in shock. He said the children had danced to the popular song “Mauli Mauli” from Lai Bhaari, along with other songs inspired by the army. “We were all sitting together after the dance performances. That is the last I saw of them,” says Ajay with a blank expression. “Once the last rites are over and the family recovers from the trauma, we will be asking the police for answers and what they have done. Self-styled Godman Ashok Kharat booked in 8 cases across Maharashtra

In a move aimed at making daily commutes easier for working women, the Maharashtra government has introduced a new “Come Early, Go Early” scheme for women employees in government offices across Mumbai. The initiative is designed to offer flexible working hours so that women can avoid the peak-hour rush while travelling to and from work. The decision was announced by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who said the initiative is part of the state government’s broader effort to improve workplace conditions and support women in the workforce. The scheme will apply to women employees working in government offices under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation as well as other state government departments in the city. Under the new policy, women employees will have some flexibility in their reporting time in the morning. Those who choose to arrive earlier than the standard office time will also be allowed to leave earlier in the evening after completing their required working hours. The aim is to give women the option to plan their commute in a way that helps them avoid the heavy rush typically seen during peak hours in Mumbai. For many working women in the city, commuting during peak hours can be physically exhausting. Mumbai’s suburban trains, buses and roads are often extremely crowded during office hours, particularly in the morning and evening. By allowing employees to shift their work timing slightly, the government hopes to reduce travel stress and make commuting safer and more manageable. Officials say the initiative could benefit thousands of women employees across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, especially those who travel long distances every day. The move is also expected to help working mothers and women who juggle professional responsibilities along with household duties. The scheme was announced around the time of International Women’s Day and is being seen as part of the state government’s broader push towards women’s empowerment and workplace support. Government officials say the idea is to create a more supportive and flexible work environment that recognises the challenges faced by women in large urban centres like Mumbai. Also read: J&K launches valley-wide drive to identify, demarcate properties of displaced Kashmiri Pandits

‘Come early, go early’: Maharashtra govt eases commute for women employees

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday informed the state legislature that more than 90 per cent of people reported missing in Maharashtra are eventually traced by the police, underlining the efforts taken by law enforcement agencies to address one of the state’s persistent social concerns.Responding to questions in the assembly, Fadnavis said that while the police have been able to locate the majority of missing individuals, a small percentage of cases still remain unresolved.According to the Chief Minister, the government is aiming to push the tracing rate even higher to around 96 per cent through improved coordination, technology and specialised search operations.Missing persons cases — particularly those involving women and children — have remained a major concern in a large and densely populated state like Maharashtra.Every year, thousands of people are reported missing across cities and rural districts, prompting police to strengthen investigation mechanisms and monitoring systems.Government data shared in the legislature indicates that tens of thousands of women and girls were reported missing in the past few years.According to the Government data, in 2025, over 45,000 women had gone missing out of which approximately 36,000 were traced. In case of minor girls, 12,000 had gone missing out of which 10,000 were traced. While most were eventually traced and reunited with their families, officials admit that the cases that remain unresolved continue to worry authorities and families alike.Police officials say many missing cases are linked to domestic disputes, migration for work, family conflicts or teenagers leaving home without informing their parents. However, authorities also remain alert to the possibility of more serious crimes such as trafficking or exploitation, especially in cases involving minors. To improve recovery rates, the Maharashtra Police have launched targeted initiatives such as Operation Muskaan and Operation Shodh, which focus on locating missing children and women across the state. These operations involve coordinated searches, verification of shelters and institutions, and the use of digital databases to track individuals across districts.Special Missing Persons Cells have also been created at several police stations, often led by women officers, to ensure that cases receive immediate attention and follow-up. Senior police officials regularly review these investigations to prevent delays.Experts say the first few days after a person goes missing are crucial for locating them safely. Quick reporting by families, efficient police response and better inter-state coordination can significantly improve recovery chances.

A tragic incident from Kalyan in Maharashtra has brought attention to the silent toll that fear and anxiety can take on a person’s mental health. A 30-year-old bank employee from the Tisgaon Naka area allegedly died by suicide days after being bitten by a stray dog. Police officials said the man had become deeply anxious about the possibility of contracting rabies following the incident. According to investigators, he was bitten on the leg by a stray dog earlier this month. Like many people aware of the deadly nature of rabies, he grew increasingly fearful about the infection. Family members told police that although he had taken an anti-rabies injection, he did not complete the full course of vaccination recommended after such bites. In the days that followed, his behaviour reportedly changed. He appeared tense and withdrawn, often speaking about his fear that he might develop rabies. Those close to him said he was constantly worrying about symptoms and appeared unable to shake off the thought that something was seriously wrong. Police said a note was recovered in which he mentioned his fear of the disease. An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered, and further investigations are underway. Medical experts emphasise that while rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms begin, it is entirely preventable if treated in time. Immediate washing of the wound, completing the full anti-rabies vaccination schedule, and taking immunoglobulin when advised are critical steps that significantly reduce the risk of infection. Doctors also point out that fear around rabies can be overwhelming, especially given its fatal reputation. However, timely medical care offers strong protection, and counselling can help those struggling with anxiety after traumatic incidents such as animal bites. Authorities have urged citizens to seek prompt medical advice after animal bites and to reach out for help if fear or anxiety becomes unmanageable.

In a major step toward integrating climate action with economic growth, Maharashtra on Tuesday launched its Climate Finance Access and Mobilisation Strategy (CFAMS) at the opening of Mumbai Climate Week. The strategy aims to mobilise large-scale investments to help the state transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy, even as it works toward its ambitious goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2027-28. CFAMS has been developed by the State Climate Action Cell with support from WRI India and the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA). Officials said the framework provides a structured roadmap to identify, access, mobilise and effectively allocate funds for climate-related initiatives across sectors. The move aligns with Maharashtra’s revised State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC 2.0) and its long-term vision document, Viksit Maharashtra 2047, which complements the Centre’s Viksit Bharat 2047 mission of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047. State officials acknowledged that public funds alone will not be sufficient to meet the scale of investment required. Maharashtra estimates that nearly Rs 3 lakh crore will be needed between 2024 and 2030 to implement climate actions under SAPCC 2.0. “As Maharashtra moves toward its goal of becoming a USD 1 trillion economy, climate action must be seen as an economic priority, not just an environmental one,” said Praveen Pardeshi, CEO of MITRA and Chief Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister. He stressed that diversified financing sources and better coordination between planning and budgeting processes will be critical to achieving long-term, climate-resilient growth. Alongside the strategy, the state also announced plans to develop a Maharashtra Climate Finance Dashboard. The proposed online platform will track climate-related expenditure across government departments, support informed decision-making and improve transparency. Officials believe it will also help attract domestic and international capital by providing clearer data on climate investments. Abhijit Ghorpade, Director of the State Climate Action Cell, said the success of Maharashtra’s climate plan depends heavily on timely and efficient access to finance. “CFAMS is designed to bridge climate finance gaps by unlocking diverse funding sources and turning policy priorities into investable projects,” he said. Madhav Pai, CEO of WRI India, added that the strategy proposes setting up a Climate Finance Facilitation Desk to streamline processes and crowd in private capital through blended finance and risk-sharing instruments. With climate risks increasing, Maharashtra’s latest initiative signals a clear attempt to place sustainability at the centre of its economic growth story. Also read: India eyes major Rafale expansion deal amid Macron-Modi meeting: Check top agenda on table
