Netflix’s series 'The Fame Game' which casts her as a &nbsp;Bollywood superstar gone missing, finds Ms Dixit Nene in sparkling form.</p>

<p>The show's&nbsp;producer Karan Johar tells me Madhuri was the first and only choice to play the superstar, Anamika Anand.</p>

<p>It was in 2007, 8 years after Sanjay Leela &nbsp;Bhansali’s 'Devdas' when &nbsp;Madhuri quit Bollywood, &nbsp;that her comeback vehicle was planned by none other than Aditya Chopra. The film 'Aaja Nachle' had Madhuri playing the author-backed tailormade role of an NRI dancer returning home to find her roots.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tragically 'Aaja Nachle' &nbsp;bombed.</p>

<p>I had spoken to Madhuri after the film’s release. She was unfazed by its failure. “There's no fear of failure in me. I'm just happy that something different has been attempted in my comeback film. There's no hero in the film. But I won't call myself the film's hero. I'm the female protagonist. I remember when I met Aditya Chopra for the first time my first question to him was - do people still want to see me? He looked at me very strangely and said, 'Don't worry about that.' But I was really concerned.”</p>

<p>Coincidentally she &nbsp;did a &nbsp;lot of dancing in &nbsp;'Aaja Nachle' &nbsp;as she’s seen doing 'The Fame Game.' In both her choreographer is Vaibhavi Merchant.</p>

<p>About her mythical dancing skills, Madhuri had said, “It just comes naturally to me. Earlier, I had many of my best dances choreographed by Saroj Khanji. And she was the boss. I just listened to her when she cracked the whip. In Aaja Nachle I was working with Vaibhavi Merchant who's an ardent fan of mine. And she was quivering on the first day. I had to call Vaibhavi aside and warn her we could do no work if she was going to be so nervous about me. So, earlier Sarojji used to calm me down, this time I was calming my choreographer down. I was very impressed by her. We got along very well.”</p>

<p>There is no doubt that &nbsp;Madhuri Dixit is the last of our screen queens. But when was the last time we saw her wowing us? After Aaja &nbsp;Nachle she was seen in some further fiascos like Gulaab Gang, Total Dhamaal and &nbsp;Karan Johar’s lavish disaster Kalank, KJo’s own Razia Sultan, Kalank is referenced very prominently in The Fame Game when Madhuri’s screen daughter is seen watching Madhuri in Kalank and mouthing its lines.</p>

<p>In the all boys-no-sense atmosphere of &nbsp;'Total &nbsp;Dhamaal' &nbsp;Madhuri &nbsp;Dixit was as out of place here as a riff of gospel music in a rave party. Not much of a choice, really since her comeback in &nbsp;2007 was a bit of a damper. The Yash Raj film about an &nbsp;NRI returning to her roots and Indian classical dancing in &nbsp;'Aaja Nachle' was specially designed for her.</p>

<p>The film flopped and &nbsp;Madhuri hastily returned to her home in the &nbsp;US. But the itch to face the camera never leaves the movie star, &nbsp;unless she is Rajshri, Vyjanthimala or Suchitra Sen, the only three actresses &nbsp;I know who never looked back once they retired. For the rest, whether it was Mumtaz(and her disastrous comeback in &nbsp;Pahlaj Nihalani’s 'Aandhiyan') &nbsp;or Urmila Matondkar (her even more disastrous item number in last year’s &nbsp;'Black Mail'), they all want to return.</p>

<p>Jaya Bachchan and Sridevi made a spectacular comeback in 'Silsila' and 'English Vinglish', respectively. Dimple Kapadia returned to the camera after years of marriage and motherhood in 'Sagar'.</p>

<p>If only Madhuri Dixit were that lucky! After her failed attempt at a comeback in &nbsp;'Aaja &nbsp;Nachle' she again made a comeback 7 years later &nbsp;(that itch again!) &nbsp;in Abhishek Choubey’s &nbsp;'Dedh Ishqiya'. This time the critics were happy and the audience was tantalized as her character had shades of lesbianism in it. However, 'Dedh Ishqiya'&nbsp;was not a &nbsp;blockbuster and it did not open the floodgates for &nbsp;Madhuri’s second innings. During the same year, Madhuri was seen in another female-hero avatar in &nbsp;Gulab Gang which flopped resoundingly. No more was seen of Madhuri on screen for the next five years. During this period she was constantly in the news for various activities on television and the internet.</p>

<p>In 2018 she did her first Marathi film Bucket List which seemed inspired by Sridevi’s English Vinglish and &nbsp;Vidya Balan’s 'Tumhari Sulu'. 'Bucket List' was not the success it was meant to be although Ranbir Kapoor made a guest appearance as a return gift to &nbsp;Madhuri who did an item song(completely out of place) &nbsp;for Ranbir in 'Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani.</p>

<p>To see her prance in a trance in 'Total Dhamaal' to an imaginary comic rhythm was like watching Deepika Padukone play the lead in 'Gully Boy'. It was not becoming for an actress of Madhuri’s dignity and grace to be hopping and skipping in the Big Boyz Burlesque Club.</p>

'The Fame Game' first look: Madhuri Dixit all set to make her OTT debut

<p>As Kathak maestro Pt Birju Maharaj breathed his last on Sunday night, he left behind a legacy that will be emulated and imbibed for generations to come. Considered one of the most prominent classical dancers of India, Pt Birju Maharaj was one of the rare artists who was able to create a link between classical dance form and Bollywood.&nbsp;<br />
Guruji, as he was fondly called by his disciples, not only took Kathak outside of India but also created some beautiful songs in Hindi cinema- some of which are still remembered for their uniqueness and authenticity.<br />

Honoured with one of the highest Indian civilian honour, the Padma Vibudhan, Pandit Birju Maharaj was also awarded National Film Award for his choreography in the film 'Vishwaroopam'.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The maestro was 83 when he suffered a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/kathak-maestro-pandit-birju-maharaj-passes-away-at-age-of-83-says-relative-445281">massive heart attack </a>on Sunday, reportedly while doing what he knew the best- dance.&nbsp;<br />

<strong>Shatranj Ke Khiladi:</strong> Film maestro Satyajit Ray's only Hindi film 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi' was a period dramedy about two wealthy noblemen who while away their time playing chess instead of taking care of their area of rule. The film had Sanjeev Kumar and Saeed Jeffrey in the lead role. It also featured Amjad Khan as Nawab Wajid Ali Shah who was known as a connoisseur of arts. A portion had the Nawab enjoying a dance recital in his court. The sequence was choreographed by Pandit Birju Maharaj and featured his student Swati Sen who to date continues to be an integral part of his inner circle. Sen has over the years performed alongside Panditji in numerous shows across the world and even handles his dance schools across the world. Back when the film was shot, she was all of 20 and a relatively new disciple of Panditji but Ray apparently had seen her perform live and was adamant to bring her on board for this sequence. The song 'Kanha Main Tose Hari' was composed, sung and choreographed by Pandit Birju Maharaj.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Dil To Pagal Hai: </strong>Pandit Birju Maharaj and Madhuri Dixit had a long association in cinema together. Of the limited work that he took up in Indian cinema, most featured the actress who is known to be a gifted dancer. The duo first screen outing together was in Yash Chopra's 'Dil To Pagal Hai', which had a sequence of Madhuri, who played a dancer in the film, dancing to an instrumental piece- particularly the drums. The film featured the lead hero Shah Rukh Khan playing the drums while Madhuri Dixit danced to the beats. A beautiful fusion set, the sequence remains well-etched in everyone's mind.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Gadar: Ek Prem Katha: </strong>Birju Maharaj composed a sequence that featured in the second half of the film. The song 'Aan Milo Sajna' featured dancers from his dance school and did not have the film's leading heroine &nbsp;Amisha Patel dancing. Instead, it was a part of a backdrop featuring Amisha Patel struggling to break free from her family and escape to her husband Sunny Deol and her son.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Devdas:</strong> Pandit Birju Maharaj and Madhuri Dixit again teamed up for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Devdas'. A musical love story set in per-independent India, it had Madhuri playing a prostitute/courtesan Chadramukhi. Several elaborate dance sequences were part of this Bollywood blockbuster. Birju Maharaj choreographed composed music and was the male lead singer for the song 'Kahe Chhed Mohe'. The song was picturised on Dixit who emoted mostly through her eyes and facial expressions - a style in Kathak.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Vishwaroop: </strong>Pandit Birju Maharaj choreographed a song called 'Main Radha Tu Shaam' which features Kamal Haasan performing intricate steps of Kathak. The sequence has Haasan, playing a dance teacher and teaching his students. It's not a long sequence and Haasan particular struggles in some areas to copy the same style of Panditji but it's still a rare sequence that features an Indian leading hero attempting to perform a classical dance form. The sequence fetched Pandit Birju Maharaj a National Film Award in 2013.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Dedh Ishqiya:</strong> Pandit Birju Maharaj and Madhuri Dixit's final collaboration on-screen was a beautiful <em>thumri </em>(style of singing) called 'Jagaave Saari Raina' where Dixit reminiscing of her younger days, breaks into a dance. The song also has a portion recited by the maestro himself. Beautiful song with equally stunning choreography, it remains one of the highlights of this film.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Bajirao Mastani</strong>: Sanjay Leela Bhansali once again roped in Pandit Birju Maharaj for his film 'Bajirao Mastani'. The maestro choreographed 'Mohe Rang Do Laal' which featured the gorgeous Deepika Padukone dancing and serenading Ranveer Singh who played Bajirao. The song was a slow number and heavily depended on expressions and hand moves which Padukone performed beautifully. The song won him the best choreography Filmfare award.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Incidentally, Saroj Khan's last choreographed number also featured Madhuri Dixit. The duo worked together in Abhishek Verman's 'Kalank' where Khan choreographed Dixit in the song 'Tabah Ho Gaye'.</p>

<p>In 2019 IIFA awards, the actress had also honoured the veteran choreographer with the Lifetime achievement award and performed to a medley of the duo's hit number as a tribute to Khan.</p>

The actress was one of the early celebrities to tap into the potential of digital space when a few years back she started her dance tutorial videos ‘Dance With Madhuri’ on the digital space. Dixit credits her husband Dr Shriram Nene for being futuristic. “My husband is very good at technology and he believed in the potential of the platform long back. Eventually, all the screens are going to finally merge. Dixit, who has ruled Bollywood for nearly three decades, feels that the magic of watching a film in theatre will never fade away. “So I think a few things will change but a few things will always be there like the whole experience of watching a film in a theatre and watching it with everyone- laughing and crying with everyone- that has a different feel altogether.” “There will always be films made specifically for the big screen. Digital platforms are great for independent kind of movies, who want to tell stories their own way and in their own rhythm. When you release something on any of these OTT platforms, you reach out to a global audience immediately. And so you can make films the way you want to make them. The actress states that the idea of the song came before the pandemic hit the world. She had recorded the song in Los Angeles. “People used to always ask me, ‘how have you overcome all the troubles in your life and maintained a sense of balance?’ And so I thought I should sing about that - When you're faced with difficulties in life, you feel like nothing is working for you, one has to reach within oneself. You'll have to create that spark or flame, which can burn really bright and emerge stronger. So that was the spirit that I wanted to convey through the song.” Produced by Dixit and Dr Nene along with Narinder Singh (who also composed the song) and penned by Michael Ochs. “We associate a candle with peace, hope. It is a metaphor for positivity. The whole world is going through a sense of despair right now. And we thought maybe this is the when we can release a song and say, you know, that there is hope, please don't give up on hope, positivity, faith. The idea was to make people realise that it's okay. You know, we are going to come out of this stronger together. So, this song was conceptualised before the COVID crisis hit but the video was shot amid lockdown.” The video has Dixit singing with montage shots of health workers who are working round the clock to combat the deadly disease. “We were very clear that we wanted to pay our tribute to the frontline workers who are (in this case) the candles that are burning the brightest right now. They are risking their lives. They're staying away from their children, their family and working to keep us safe and healthy. Then, there daily wage workers who are also suffering a lot due to this pandemic -so these are the candles who are burning the brightest, and we paid an ode to them through this song,” the actress added. Commenting on the incidents of violence against healthcare workers in Indore a month back, the actress said that one needs to understand the plight of healthcare workers and their sacrifice for society. "They have to be respected.” Dixit revealed how her husband helped her in filming her portions in the video, at their Mumbai home. Her family, which includes her two teenage sons, often get into jam sessions. “My husband plays the guitar, my two sons know how to play the tabla and the piano. There is one more Marathi film in the pipeline, she reveals and states that she is not against the idea of producing a Hindi film in the near future. The actor had been suffering from heart ailments and been to hospitals several times for treatment during the past two years.&nbsp;A two-term MP from Krishnanagar and MLA from Alipore, he is survived by his daughter and wife.<br />

Paul remained away from films after CBI arrested him in the Rose Valley chit-fund scam in December 2016 and was given bail after 13 months.<br />

Paul had reportedly gone to Mumbai to visit his daughter. <p>In the last decade or two- the one name that comes to mind when one thinks of tragic love-dramas in Bollywood is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Bhansali, with his opulence, over-the-top dramas has made unrequited love look stunning on the big screen. So when the trailer of filmmaker Abhishek Varman's 'Kalank' first came out- one couldn't help but notice the Bhansali influence in every frame. But does 'Kalank' make for a Bhansali level of tragic love-story? Only in parts.</p>

<p>A story, which is loosely inspired by Yash Chopra's 'Trishul', is set in Husnabad, outside of Lahore in the year 1946. Its a time when India's is on the brink of partition and tension between Hindu and Muslim extremist is palpable. And amid this hate blossoms love between two uncanny people. Roop (Alia Bhatt) the rebellious woman trapped in a loveless marriage and Zafar(Varun Dhawan) an angst-ridden bastard who has grown up in the lanes of Hiramandi, the famous red-light area of Lahore. &nbsp;</p>

He only knows how to hate, and uses Roop initially to destroy Dev's father( Sanjay Dutt) but finds himself falling in love instead.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Roop and Dev's forbidden love is the core of 'Kalank' and the Hindu-Muslim riots form the backdrop of the story. With a huge budget (Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala are co-producers) Varman, who also writes the screenplay, presents a fictional world which is opulent and visually stunning. In Varman's version of Hiramandi, Ramleela spills out the streets in a very elaborate fashion, where Ravan is burnt by multiple Rams emerging from the water and where canals in Hiramandi are decorated by flower petals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Binod Pradhan does complete justice in capturing the grandeur on screen making scenes look beautiful and sets the tone of the film just right. Music by Pritam is hummable with the titke track standing out the most.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among the actors, Varun and Alia get the maximum screen time. Alia, who has in a short span of time proved her mettle as an actor, delivers a restraint performance as the strong-willed, stubborn, rebellious Roop. She is vulnerable in love but also angry at how her life has turned out. And Alia delivers these emotions well on screen. Varun, on the other hand, struggles a bit to show the angst that his character Zafar has. You have seen several prominent actors from Big B to SRK- play such flawed heroes on screen. So Varun has big shoes to fill. While the actor tries, it is the screenplay that lets him down. His anger for his parents is discussed to great length but somehow you are unable to connect to him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The other two love-stories, unfortunately, take a back seat. I wish writer Shibani Bhatija had invested more on Aditya-Sonakshi and Sanjay-Madhuri's track. Those two stories had so much more to explore. Aditya, in fact, is pitch perfect as the righteous, lonesome Dev who is stuck between his two wives- one of whom he dearly loves. Sonakshi too holds her own in the limited screen time that she has. It's a treat to watch Madhuri and Sanjay on screen together albeit for a brief period. Wish they had more scenes together! Kunal Khemmu makes an impressive cameo as well.&nbsp;</p>

Despite a stretched first half, the story fails to establish why Roop and Zafar are drawn towards each other. The second half redeems the film to a great extent where the story picks up with a very well shot climax.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The makers take copious amount of liberty in telling a period-saga where outskirts of Lahore have mountains, streams and rocky shores similar to Ladakh and where the state of Rajputana (erstwhile Rajasthan) has meadows and snow-capped mountains in the background. There is also a bizarre scene where Varun Dhawan takes on a bull in a arena in what appears to be in Afganistan!&nbsp;</p>
