Security forces foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir by killing two militants, a defence spokesperson said on Sunday.

Based on specific inputs from intelligence agencies and J-K Police of likely infiltration in the Uri sector by heavily armed terrorists from across the LoC, troops were put on a high alert, and the counter-infiltration grid was strengthened, Srinagar-based defence spokesperson.

Taking advantage of bad weather marked by incessant rainfall and poor visibility, a group of armed terrorists attempted to infiltrate across the LoC, he said.

At around 3 pm on Saturday, the group was intercepted by alert troops resulting in a heavy exchange of fire. Intense firefight continued till last light resulting in the elimination of two terrorists, he added.

The spokesperson said the balance terrorists withdrew to the enemy side of the LoC along with the bodies of dead terrorists.

The area was kept under surveillance throughout the night.

On Sunday, a thorough search of the incident site was conducted leading to the identification of tell-tale signs and recovery of heavy war-like stores including two AK series rifles, six pistols, four Chinese grenades, blankets, and two blood-stained bags containing Pakistani and Indian currency notes, Pakistani medicines and eatables, the spokesperson said.

“As per own assessment, recovery of two blood-stained bags confirms that at least two terrorists were grievously injured forcing them to shed their load and flee across the LoC. Due to inclement weather conditions, search operation is suspended, which will resume on opening up of weather,” he said.

India: Infiltration bid foiled in J&K’s Uri sector; two militants killed

India is celebrating its 76th anniversary of Independence Day and security forces on the line of actual control have been put on high alert near border areas. In North Kashmir security forces have inputs that terrorists might try to sneak in from across the border to disrupt peace in Jammu and Kashmir here's a report.

India: Security forces are on high alert in Kashmir

India is celebrating the 76th anniversary of its Independence from the British rule, and security forces on the Line of Control have been put on high alert across the border area of North Kashmir. Security forces have inputs that terrorists might try to sneak in from across the border to disrupt peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the last one month, around a dozen infiltration bids have been foiled by the security forces on the LoC and International border. Half a dozen terrorists have been killed during these infiltration attempts.

In North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the whole of LoC is covered with dense forest giving an edge to the terror groups to infiltrate into the Kashmir territory and this district sees the highest number of infiltration attempts by terrorists from across the border.

Border security forces posted on one of the forward posts in North Kashmir have been guarding the borders day and night and making sure that no such infiltration attempt is successful. And to guard the higher reaches of the Line of Control, Border Security Force trains soldiers not only to acclimatise with the environment but also to become agile in the Himalayan mountain ranges.

WION’s team reached the border area to get a first-hand account of the training provided to the soldiers of BSF. The training includes how to tackle an attack, ambush, encounter, hostage situation and infiltration from across the border.

“We are always ready to deal with the enemy. We have got the latest surveillance technology here and everything is in place to neutralize any threat that comes our way,” said Udham Kuhad, Commanding Officer, BSF, Kupwara, North Kashmir.

The Border Security forces deployed at the forward locations close to LoC are keeping a continuous vigil to secure the borders. Apart from using the new high-tech surveillance equipment, patrolling is done four times during the day in these higher reaches.

Cordon and aearch operations are carried out to sanitise the areas close to LoC. The smuggling of narcotics is also one of the major challenges for the security forces in North Kashmir. The money which is being generated via the drug trade is used to fuel terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

To keep the troopers motivated and physically and mentally fit in war-like situations is one of the toughest tasks. And at this location, BSF has found a way, the troopers are undergoing a rigorous morning training session every day which keeps them physically fit and mentally strong. While one group are engaged in activities the other one cheers for them. The BSF soldiers also want countrymen to be at peace as they are protecting the borders.

The security forces posted in Jammu and Kashmir, many a time face hostage situations during encounters and attacks. And special training is being given to the soldiers of the BSF to tackle the situation without harming the hostages.

“I want to tell my countrymen to have faith in us and we will deliver. We want all the countrymen to live without fear and just work on making India's economy better and rest we will take care of,” said Udham Kuhad, Commanding Officer, BSF, Kupwara, North Kashmir.

The government has provided the security forces with the latest and best equipment. The soldiers are training with these latest arms and ammunition too. In an 80 mm mortar shelling launcher, they just have to push in the coordinates of the location which they want to blast and with just a push button, they can carry out the attack. It has a range of around 5km, and training soldiers with accuracy is done on a daily basis as well.

India: LoC put on alert ahead of Independence day celebrations

Kashmir was always famous for places like Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, but with the opening of areas close to the line of control, a huge number of tourists are visiting and exploring these areas. Along with the beauty of these mountain ranges, tourists are excited to see a border that divides the two countries.

The guns have fallen silent on the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan for over two years now. And after these peaceful years, the government of Jammu and Kashmir, along with the department of tourism, have opened many areas close to the LoC for tourists and visitors.

The people living on the line of control are finally living a peaceful life and are ready to welcome tourists from across the country and world. The areas close to LoC in North Kashmir include Keran, Gurez, Tangdhar, Machil and Bangus that have been added to the new list of tourist places in the valley.

"We have been promoting the border areas. We don’t want haphazard development; we want to maintain our ecology. It was very difficult to come to these places few years ago but after the abrogation of article 370, we are opening border areas and tourists are loving it. Tourism is the back bone of the valley and this will help in building the economy of these areas. The response has been fantastic, people are so excited," said Raja Yaqoob Farooq, Director, Tourism, Kashmir.

The department of tourism has prepared a plan to build infrastructure in these areas while keeping the environment in mind. They are also providing employment and generating economic opportunities for the local people of these areas.

“Keran is a very important tourist destination among the bordering areas open for tourists. We are trying to provide the infrastructure. You can apply for an e-pass. Within 24 hours, you get the pass to visit. The biggest gain will be for the locals. Tourism can provide employment, it can help in building infrastructure, it will boost the local economy,” said Ayushi Sudan, DC Kupwara.

With breathtaking views of hills and rivers, these places are being promoted as adventure tourism destinations. And what is exciting is waving at people from across the border. People from various parts of the country come to witness these visuals.

“I am extremely happy; I had seen this on the social media and I came to see the place with my family. It looks better than what I saw on social media. Looking at Pakistani people from so close is also very nice and exciting. I will tell everyone to come here. It’s without fencing border and is amazing" said Raju J, a tourist.

Significantly, Kashmir has witnessed record breaking tourist arrivals in the last four months. With all the major tourist destinations of the Kashmir Valley like Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg fully booked for most of the season. The government says that promoting these sites will also help in meeting the huge influx of tourists visiting the Kashmir Valley.

"When there used to be ceasefire violations, we used to run for our lives. It’s so peaceful now. Nothing happened in last 70 years, but in the last four years, things have changed drastically. Our roads are better, our water and electricity is better. I congratulate the central government and Indian army for their exemplary work. It’s a beautiful scene when people from both the countries wave at each other," said Mumtaz Khan, a local.

The Indian Army has played a major role in opening these areas to the public. The entire security system in these areas is under the Indian Army and they are not only protecting these areas but also promoting them as tourist destinations. The local people of the area say that without the Indian Army, it would not be possible to welcome tourists in these areas.

We used to live in bunkers earlier and we are hoping that we don't see those days again. We don't have money to invest in making hotels. That's why we have made homestays. The security forces in Jammu and Kashmir are trying hard to finish terrorism in the Valley. And this winter, there is a shift in strategy of forces. Security agencies are focussing on neutralising foreign terrorists mostly Pakistanis in the coming three months.

Security forces see foreign terrorists as the biggest challenge. These terrorists are highly trained and also recruit young Kashmiri boys into the terror outfits. The security forces say that foreign terrorists also run training camps in the valley for the local Kashmiri boys to join the terror ranks.

''If one foreign terrorist comes in the valley, it means he will be recruiting 4 local boys into the terror ranks. And that's why we are focussing on foreign terrorists and want to neutralise all of them soon. Mostly to stop the recruitment of young boys into these terror outfits,'' said Vijay Kumar, IG Kashmir.

The security forces believe that winters are the best opportunity for them to neutralise these foreign terrorists. As the higher reaches are completely covered in snow, these terrorists come down to plains during the harsh winter months in the valley and that's when security forces want to strike against them. And the new strategy has already been implemented on the ground. Six foreign terrorists have already been killed in the first two weeks of January 2022.

The foreign terrorists are not only well trained but also laced with most sophisticated arms and ammunition. Security forces have recovered many M4 assault rifles from these foreign terrorists.

''We have always seen that terrorists during the snowfall leave the higher reaches and come down to plains and villages. They go back to these higher reaches in summers. So, the months of January, February and March are the time we need to utilize to the fullest. We along with security forces want to neutralise as many foreign terrorists as possible. '' said Vijay Kumar, IG Kashmir.

The new strategy has been put in place by security forces as they have received information that foreign terrorists numbering around 85 in Kashmir have been directed by the Pakistani handlers to recruit as many locals and train them in the valley only. This comes after the tight security vigil on the LoC which has led to the least number of infiltrations in the last one years. And this seems to have frustrated the terror handlers from across the border as they are not able to push terrorists and arms into the valley.

Security forces recently claimed that there are less than 200 militants present in the Kashmir valley for the first time in 30 years and with this new strategy in place, security agencies believe they will be able to bring down the numbers further.

Pakistan must cease fire on all fronts, not just along the Line of Control (LOC), India's Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat told WION in an exclusive interview.

He was referring to the practice of Pakistan dropping weapons and drugs using drones and quadcopter into the Indian side of the international border.

"Pakistan must understand that if they want a genuine ceasefire, they must ceasefire on all fronts," General Rawat told WION's Executive Editor Palki Sharma.

India's CDS said he wanted Pakistan should "cease fire on the borders, ensure no support to terrorism in the hinterland," and make sure that "war-like stores" are not delivered.

Otherwise, he warned, "our armed forces are always ready to retaliate in a befitting manner."

"Any instance of the violation of the ceasefire or any attempt at infiltration along the Line of Control, they will get a befitting reply from our troops."

He said India is not lowering its guard while exercising utmost caution, "but in no way will we allow Pakistan to take advantage of the ceasefire."

Asked if the recent peace overture from Pakistan is a lull before the storm, General Rawat said the demand for ceasefire may have come from civilians in Pakistan living in the border areas in Pakistan, along with the military casualties they suffered.

He also noted that the other reason may be that Pakistan's western border with Afghanistan has become very active. "So we have to wait and watch as to how the Afghanistan situation evolves" and how long the ceasefire lasts.

Pakistan sending "war-like stores" across the border is vitiating the atmosphere and does not augur well for the continuation of the ceasefire, the Indian CDS said.

"If it happens repeatedly," he warned, "then there may be a change in strategy on our side as well."

"When we talk about the ceasefire, it does not only mean engaging with weapons, but if we want Pakistan to take a serious view of the ceasefire, then I think even sending these drones across, especially with weapons which will foment insurgency in the hinterland, that's something that must stop. Otherwise, this could again lead to escalation."

On February 24, India and Pakistan had agreed to “strict observance of all agreements, understandings and cease firing along the Line of Control and all other sectors”.

In the past few months, there have been several incidents of firing across the border by Pakistan, sometimes leading to civilian casualties.

Ceasefire violations along the India-Pakistan border were highest in 2020 at 4,645, or nearly 12.7 violations a day.

Between January 1 and February 16 this year, there were 524 violations which is more than 11 violations a day, according to an Indian government reply to a Right to Information(RTI) query.

On the International Coffee Day, the Indian army dedicated a newly-opened coffee shop to the locals of the Gurez area in Bandipora District near the Line of Control (LoC). It is the first coffee shop to open in the area for tourists and locals. Gurez was thronged by lakhs of tourists and people this year. The Log Hut Cafe, overlooking the Habba Khatoon Mountain range, is a perfect spot for the bikers, trekkers and locals to stop for a cup of coffee. The main purpose to start the cafe was to create a space for the locals to socialise among themselves, as the youth of the area had no such place.
