Liverpool's Mohamed Salah highlights Egypt's squad for Africa Cup of Nations

Arsenal ensured they will spend Christmas Day on top of the Premier League as they held title rivals Liverpool to a pulsating 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta's side took an early lead through Gabriel Magalhaes, but Mohamed Salah hauled Liverpool level before the interval.

A draw was arguably the right result after both sides flexed their muscles to show why they have emerged as the leading contenders to win the title.

Chasing a first title since 2004, Arsenal sit one point clear of second placed Liverpool heading into the festive period.

The team that has topped the Premier League at Christmas has gone on to win the title in six of the past 10 seasons, but the draw on Merseyside was also a boost to the chasing pack.

Third placed Aston Villa are level on points with Liverpool, fourth placed Tottenham are three points further back, while champions Manchester City are six points adrift of the leaders with a game in hand.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their past 11 games against Arsenal at Anfield.

However, coming a week after their goalless stalemate against Manchester United, this was another frustrating result for Jurgen Klopp's team.

"Oh my god, how strong are they? The good news is we are good as well," Klopp said.

"We pass instead of shoot, four or five times we do that, it's a lesson. But generally the game is great."

Arsenal weren't completely satisfied either.

Last season they led 2-0 at Liverpool but ended up drawing 2-2, a result that started their collapse in the title race.

Their failure to hold on this time should not have such a damaging impact, but it was still a missed opportunity.

"Proud of the performance but the final pass went astray a few times. That's where the frustration lies," Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka said.

Klopp had urged Liverpool fans to give Arsenal the "proper Anfield experience" after saying he was unhappy with the atmosphere during Wednesday's 5-1 rout of West Ham in the League Cup.

But Arteta was well aware of the maelstrom lying in wait, likening the visceral Anfield experience to being thrown around in a "washing machine".

<h2>Red wave</h2>

Responding to Klopp, the Liverpool faithful bellowed their 'You'll never walk alone' anthem as loudly as ever before kick-off, but Arsenal took just 30 seconds to show they were unfazed.

A flowing move cut open the Liverpool defence and ended with Gabriel Jesus's shot deflecting just over.

It was a warning and Arsenal took the lead after only four minutes.

Martin Odegaard delivered a perfect free-kick into the Liverpool area and Gabriel rose to thump his header past Alisson Becker from eight yards.

The Brazilian defender celebrated by cupping his hands to his ears in front of the Kop.

Anfield was stunned but not silenced. Falling behind was nothing new to Liverpool, who had trailed in eight other Premier League games this season and only lost one of them.

Liverpool were controversially denied a penalty by VAR when Odegaard handled in the area after slipping under pressure from Salah.

Salah took it upon himself to ensure Liverpool weren't left to rue that debatable decision as the Egyptian conjured a superb 29th minute equaliser.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's raking pass picked out Salah down the right flank and he glided away from Oleksandr Zinchenko into the area before smashing a fierce strike past David Raya at his near post.

A thrilling half concluded with Arteta holding his head when Gabriel Martinelli shot wide moments after Saka ran through on goal but failed to finish.

Klopp's men had the momentum after the break and Joe Gomez rifled inches wide, while Harvey Elliott's long-range strike deflected onto the post.

They should have been in front in the 73rd minute when a break from an Arsenal corner climaxed with Salah teeing up Alexander-Arnold, but the ball took a slight bobble and his shot cannoned back off the crossbar with just Raya to beat.

As the relentless Red wave kept surging toward the Kop, Gomez's effort drew a good stop from Raya, but Arsenal held on.

Premier League: Arsenal play draw with Liverpool at Anfield, remain on top of table at Christmas

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has cast doubts over his side’s Premier League title credentials as they get ready to face Arsenal on Saturday (Dec 23). The clash at Anfield will be decisive in the Premier League title race as a win for Liverpool will see them go top of the league before Christmas while a draw will see Arsenal maintain their top spot. Interestingly, defending champions Manchester City are not in action over the weekend which could provide a perfect platform for Arsenal and Liverpool to extend the gap at the top of the Premier League standings.

Premier League: Liverpool legend casts doubts on team's title credentials ahead of crunch Arsenal showdown

Mohamed Salah scored his 200th goal for Liverpool before Harvey Elliott's last-gasp winner sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace that sent the Reds to the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's side were in danger of a damaging defeat in the title race after Jean-Philippe Mateta's penalty put Palace ahead in the second half at Selhurst Park.

But Palace's Jordan Ayew was sent off with 15 minutes left and Liverpool took full advantage to erase a previously spluttering performance with a blistering finale.

Salah's 14th goal this term made him the fifth player to score 200 for Liverpool in all competitions after Ian Rush (346), Roger Hunt (285), Gordon Hodgson (241) and Billy Liddell (228).

In his 247th Premier League appearance, the Egypt star also reached 150 goals in the competition, including two scored for Chelsea, putting him in the all-time top-10 list level alongside Michael Owen.

Despite Salah's landmark, a point would have been a disappointing result for Liverpool, but young midfielder Elliott came off the bench to seal the points in stoppage time.

Liverpool's third successive league win moved them one point above second-placed Arsenal ahead of the Gunners' trip to third-placed Aston Villa later on Saturday.

With home games against Manchester United and Arsenal looming before Christmas, the Reds have a golden opportunity to cement their title credentials heading into the new year.

Klopp had called a television presenter "ignorant" for joking that the 1230 GMT Saturday kick-off was the German's "favourite" time to play.

The Reds boss has made a habit of complaining about the schedule whenever Liverpool have a match in the early Saturday slot after playing the previous Wednesday.

<h2>Liverpool leave it late</h2>

Initially, it seemed Klopp's dislike for the kick-off time would be renewed as Liverpool struggled to find any rhythm in wet and windy conditions in south London.

Liverpool were fortunate not to fall behind when Jefferson Lerma's close-range effort forced a superb save from Alisson Becker, with the rebound hitting the post before it was hacked off the line by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Palace were awarded a penalty when Odsonne Edouard was bundled over Virgil van Dijk, but Will Hughes had clearly fouled Wataru Endo before passing to the forward.

Referee Andy Madley was told to consult the pitchside monitor and overturned his penalty decision.

For the first time in the league this season, Klopp's side failed to muster a single shot on target in a dismal first-half display that ended fittingly with Alexander-Arnold misplacing a simple pass.

Palace deservedly took the lead in the 57th minute as Jarell Quansah's challenge on Mateta was deemed worthy of a penalty after Madley checked the monitor.

To Klopp's bewilderment, VAR only intervened to prompt the decision several moments after the foul.

Liverpool were furious but Mateta was unfazed, barely taking a run-up as he dispatched the spot-kick past Alisson with ease.

But luck was on Liverpool's side as Palace forward Ayew was dismissed for a soft second booking in the 75th minute and within 60 seconds the visitors were level.

If the sending off had an element of good fortune for Liverpool, there was more to come as Cody Gakpo's cross was only cleared to Salah, whose shot from 10 yards took a wicked deflection as it flashed past wrong-footed keeper Sam Johnstone.

Liverpool finally had some momentum and their late siege produced a winner in the first minute of stoppage time.

Elliott took possession 30 yards from goal and swerved away from his marker before unleashing a superb strike that beat Palace substitute keeper Remi Matthews at his near post.

In the final seconds, Alisson had to save from Joachim Andersen to preserve Liverpool's hard-fought success.

Premier League: Mohamed Salah's 200th Liverpool goal inspires fightback to beat Crystal Palace

Juergen Klopp adopted the role of peacemaker on Sunday when the Liverpool manager stepped in to pacify Brighton &amp; Hove Albion boss Roberto de Zerbi during an angry exchange with officials on the touchline of a 2-2 Premier League draw.

De Zerbi was shown a yellow card by referee Anthony Taylor in the 69th minute at the Amex Stadium for his remonstration as Brighton were denied a penalty after Kaoru Mitoma's shot hit the arm of Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.

The Italian manager continued to protest after being&nbsp;booked, before Klopp intervened and attempted to calm him down.

"In the moment when he got a bit outraged I used my age and tried to calm him down," 56-year-old Klopp, who has himself clashed with referees on numerous occasions in the past, told reporters.

<h2>Liverpool seek to end Man City run</h2>

Liverpool have been the only team to consistently challenge Manchester City in recent years, winning 10 out of 23 matches in all competitions under the reign of Jurgen Klopp. The two sides had epic battles in the 2018/19&nbsp;and&nbsp;2021/22 seasons, when&nbsp;City&nbsp;pipped their rivals by just a single point on both occasions, while the Reds clinched their first league title in 30 years in 2020.

But Liverpool, revitalised after a below-par campaign last season, have not won a league game at the Etihad since their 4-1 demolition of City in November 2015. The reigning champions, by contrast, have won 23 matches in a row at home in all competitions.

Erling Haaland is one goal away from obliterating the Premier League record for the quickest player to 50 goals -- the Norwegian scored twice in City's frantic 4-4 draw at Chelsea earlier this month to take his tally to 49 goals in just 47 appearances. Former Newcastle and Manchester United forward Andrew Cole is the current record holder, reaching the landmark in 65 games.

<h2>Will 10-point penalty fire up Everton?</h2>

Sean Dyche's Everton had turned the corner in recent weeks, winning three of their past five games to pull well clear of the relegation zone.

But last week's 10-point deduction for breaching Premier League profitability and sustainability rules means they go into their match against Manchester United level on four points with bottom club Burnley. Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell said the team would now have added motivation, fuelled by a burning sense of injustice at the "wholly disproportionate ruling".

Despite the sanction, the nine-time English champions are just two points from safety, thanks to the poor form of the newly promoted teams. United have climbed to sixth in the table after winning four of their past five league games but they are blunt in attack and remain unconvincing at the back.&nbsp;

<h2>Spurs seek to stop rot against in-form Villa</h2>

Tottenham boss Ange&nbsp;Postecoglou&nbsp;made the best start to a season by a new manager in Premier League history after 10 games but the team has dropped off top spot due to consecutive defeats. Spurs were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea after being reduced to nine men and then lost 2-1 at Wolves in a game in which they were leading going into stoppage time.

One headache Postecoglou must deal with is the absence of playmaker James Maddison, who has made such an impact since arriving in June but has been ruled out until the New Year with an ankle injury. Postecoglou will be wary of Aston Villa, who have continued their rapid progress under Unai Emery and are just a point behind fourth-placed Spurs and three points off the top.

The Birmingham club's 3-1 win against Fulham earlier this month was a 13th successive home win -- a feat they last achieved 40 years ago. But their away form is less impressive, with just two wins from six games on the road.

Premier League: Liverpool's Luis Diaz dedicates goal at Luton to his 'kidnapped' father

Premier League outfit Everton was handed a points deduction for breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations on Friday (Nov 17) by the authority. The news comes as a big blow to the Toffees who have avoided relegation to the second division in the final stages of the last two seasons. The FA have handed the Liverpool-based club a 10-point deduction that has seen them slip to 19th place with only goal difference separating them from bottom-placed Sheffield United in the Premier League.

Premier League: Everton deducted 10 points for breach of profit and sustainability rule; now sit 19th

Between tears, Luis Manuel Diaz, father of Liverpool striker Luis Diaz, recounted Friday how he was made to walk "too much" with little sleep in the nearly two weeks he was held hostage in a mountainous area of Colombia by members of the ELN guerrilla group.&nbsp;

Diaz, finally liberated Thursday after calls from around the world for his freedom, told reporters at his home in the country's north he went through a "very difficult" time, surviving "almost 12 days without sleep."

Diaz's wife Cilenis Marulanda, who was taken by the same ELN kidnappers on October 28 but rescued hours later, rubbed her husband's back lovingly as he broke down in tears mid-statement.

Behind the pair hung a string of golden balloons spelling out "Welcome Mane," his nickname, in Spanish.

Diaz walked with obvious difficulty as he arrived for the press conference, and had to be helped up from his chair afterwards and led away.

He told reporters he was not maltreated by his captors.

"I had to walk too much, up and down many mountains, trying to stay safe so that... I could return home," said the 56-year-old, who is no stranger to the mountainous region he has explored since a child.

But "this was a different story," he said Friday. "I would not want anyone to be in that mountain in the situation I was in."

Footballer Diaz's parents were abducted by armed men on motorcycles at a gas station in Barrancas, a town near the Venezuelan border.

Marulanda was rescued hours later and a massive search operation by ground and air was launched for her husband, with more than 250 soldiers involved.

The ELN, which is in peace negotiations with the government and is party to a six-month ceasefire that entered into force in August, described the kidnapping by one of its units as a "mistake."

<h2>'Peace in Colombia'</h2>

On Thursday, after days of intense negotiations, the rebels handed Diaz over to humanitarian workers at an undisclosed location in the Serrania del Perija mountain range, from where he was flown by helicopter to the city of Valledupar, some 90 kilometers (55 miles) from his hometown.

Hours later, he arrived by car to neighbors celebrating with drums and trumpet music outside his home, which was under police guard.

On Friday, Diaz told reporters he hoped his release was a step towards "peace in Colombia and so that everyone, and all the hostages, will have a chance to be free."

The abduction threatened to derail high-stakes peace negotiations between the ELN and the government of leftist President Gustavo Petro.

Petro took office last August with the stated goal of achieving "total peace" in a country ravaged by decades of fighting between the security forces, leftist guerrillas, right-wing paramilitaries and drug gangs.

More than 38,000 people have been kidnapped in Colombia over the years, mainly by armed groups raising funds with ransom money.

According to official data, the ELN still holds about 30 hostages.

Colombia's rights ombudsman Carlos Camargo said Friday the practice must be stopped as part of "fixed conditions" for successful peace talks.

But an ELN leader who goes by the name Antonio Garcia said on X, formerly Twitter, the organization "will not accept conditions or blackmail."

Luis Manuel Diaz is the founder and amateur coach of the only football academy in Barrancas, where his son showed promise from a very young age.&nbsp;

Diaz Sr. is credited with aiding the meteoric rise of his son who has played for his country 43 times and is the first Indigenous Colombian to make it to world football's top echelons.

Acquaintances have told AFP he sometimes sold food he cooked himself to pay for his son's trips to Barranquilla, the city where he had his debut.

He later played for Porto and now for Liverpool.

The ELN, one of Colombia's last recognized guerrilla groups, has some 5,800 combatants.

On Sunday, Diaz had begged the ELN to free his father.

Diaz had a tough period during the last 12 days while he stayed in England despite the news of the kidnap.

He was not in the matchday squad for the Premier League match against Nottingham Forest last Sunday where his teammates showed strong support to him in the tough time.

He was reinstated in the team for his side’s away match against Luton Town, where he made a remarkable return.

Having come on as a substitute, he scored a 94th-minute equaliser, with his side trailing 0-1 in the match.

He would then showcase his support to his family with a message in Spanish written on his inner shirt.

He is next likely to take the field on late Thursday evening when Liverpool take on Toulouse FC in the Europa League.

"Long live Freedom and Peace," President Gustavo Petro wrote on X, formerly Twitter, after the release. On Sunday, Diaz had begged the ELN to free his father. "I ask the ELN for the prompt release of my father, and I ask international organizations to intercede for his freedom," Diaz said on X. "Every second, every minute our anguish grows," the young footballer added.

Football: Liverpool forward Luis Diaz's father released by Colombia's ELN guerrilla group

Kidnappers of&nbsp;Luis Diaz's father have issued a new statement, a day after the&nbsp;Liverpool player made an impassioned appeal for his release. The kidnappers, belonging to the&nbsp;left-wing ELN guerrilla organisation in Colombia said they were in the process of releasing Luis Manuel Díaz.&nbsp;

Commander Jose Manuel Martinez Quiroz, one of the group's unit leaders released a statement under his signature and requested the authorities to suspend security operations to prevent any further delays.&nbsp;

“On November 2, we informed the country of the decision to release Mr. Luis Manuel Díaz, father of the player Luis Díaz. From that date, we began the process to accomplish this as soon as possible. We are making efforts to avoid incidents with government forces," read the statement.

"The area is still militarised, they are carrying out flyovers, disembarking troops, broadcasting and offering rewards as part of an intense search operation. This situation is not allowing for the execution of the release plan quickly and safely, where Mr Luis Manuel Díaz is not at risk."

The Gureilla group added that if the operations continued in the area they would have to delay the release due to the increased risks.&nbsp;

"We understand the anguish of the Díaz Marulanda family, to whom we say that we will keep our word to release him unilaterally, as soon as we have security guarantees for the development of the liberation operation.”

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has undergone surgery on the shoulder injury he suffered while playing for Scotland.

Robertson sustained the damage in a collision with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon during Scotland's Euro 2024 qualifying defeat earlier in October.

The left-back, who has played eight league games and scored one goal for Liverpool this season, was replaced by Kostas Tsimikas for last Saturday's Merseyside derby win against Everton.

He faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was unable to pin-point an exact date for his return to action.

"Robbo had surgery and all went well, as good as it could be, so the recovery starts after he wakes up," Klopp told reporters on Wednesday.

"I think it happened this morning. That's it. We don't know how long it will take or whatever, but the first step is done, that's good."

Klopp could make widespread changes for the visit of Toulouse to Anfield in Group E of the Europa League on Thursday.

But Klopp does not intend to take the French side for granted despite their limited European pedigree.

"Toulouse deserve all our respect. It is a really interesting story, winning the (French) Cup last year," he said.

"It was a massive thing. They are a young team, a talented team, you see them playing really nice football and they have a clear idea.

"They got a point against PSG and it was a massive one so we have to make sure we are really ready. Then it is about us. We have to create an atmosphere through the way we play."

Liverpool would go five points clear in the group with a win, leaving them firmly on track for the knockout stages.

"We want to win football games and this is the next opportunity," Klopp said.

"A win would bring us to nine points with Toulouse on four, but knowing that changes nothing. We have to play our best. We will make a few changes but not too much.

"The boys have shown they are really ready for the competition. That's what I wanted to see."

Cody Gakpo could return for Liverpool after the Dutch forward recovered from a knee injury sustained in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham in September.

"Cody is in full training now since Sunday, which means he is available for the squad. Whatever we do with that we will have to see, but that's good as well," Klopp said.

Premier League: Liverpool's Andy Robertson undergoes shoulder surgery

Manchester City beat Brighton 2-1 on Saturday to return to the Premier League summit and end Liverpool's brief stay at the top after their victory in the Merseyside derby.

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Jurgen Klopp's men beat 10-man Everton 2-0 in the early kick-off at Anfield, extending their dominance over their struggling neighbours.

But champions City put their recent wobble behind them as they saw off high-flying Brighton thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland.

Arsenal can become the fourth team to top the table on Saturday if they beat Chelsea in the early evening kick-off.

Liverpool had fortune on their side at home.

Everton's Ashley Young was sent off before half-time for two bookable offences, while Ibrahima Konate escaped a second booking in the second half with the game still goalless.

Liverpool struggled to make their man advantage count, but finally achieved the breakthrough 15 minutes from time when Salah smashed home from the penalty spot after Michael Keane handled.

Salah was then teed up by Darwin Nunez to make the points safe deep into stoppage time.

Everton manager Sean Dyche was angry about the decision not to send Konate off.

"I have no clue how he didn't feel it was a bookable offence," he said.

"I like to think there are a lot of fair-minded people here today who are stunned that wasn't a second yellow card."

Even Klopp said he could understand Everton's frustration at a lack of consistency from referee Craig Pawson.

But the three points mean the Reds have lost just one of their last 29 Merseyside derbies and remain unbeaten at Anfield in front of a crowd against Everton since 1999.

City, who had lost their previous two league games, dominated the first half of their match at the Etihad against Brighton, taking the lead through Alvarez in the seventh minute.

Jeremy Doku was the creator as he reached the byline and pulled back for Alvarez to tuck home his seventh of the season from 12 yards.

Haaland ended his brief goal drought by doubling City's lead 12 minutes later, driving home a fierce left-footed shot from just outside the area.

But it was a different story after the break and Brighton pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute.

Moments after Alvarez failed with an attempt to catch Jason Steele off his line, the ball was quickly sent upfield and, after Kaoru Mitoma's attempted pass was blocked, Ansu Fati tucked home.

City defender Manuel Akanji was sent off in the closing minutes but they held on to win despite late pressure.

Newcastle, whose early-season struggles are now a distant memory, romped to a 4-0 win against sorry Crystal Palace, with goals from Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson.

The win, their fourth in five Premier League matches, lifts Eddie Howe's men to fifth in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Brentford beat Burnley 3-0 while Wolves came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 thanks to a late winner from Sasa Kalajdzic.

Luton recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Nottingham Forest.

Manchester United play bottom club Sheffield United in the late kick-off, with Old Trafford in mourning over the death of club great Bobby Charlton.

Tottenham, who started the day at the top, are not in action until Monday, when they host Fulham.

Premier League: Man City return to summit after Liverpool win derby; wins for Newcastle, Wolves

Liverpool and Egypt football star Mohamed Salah called for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza on Wednesday as he pleaded for an end to "massacres" in the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Gazans have been facing dire shortages as the territory was effectively sealed off in the wake of the October 7 attacks by Hamas militants on Israeli communities and military posts that claimed 1,400 lives.

On Tuesday, a deadly rocket strike hit a Gaza hospital that Hamas blamed on Israel.

However, Israel denied responsibility, claiming the strike was caused by an errant rocket fired by Palestinian militants.

A Champions League and Premier League winner with Liverpool, Egypt captain Salah, 31, is one of the most popular athletes in the Arab world.

"It is not always easy to speak in a time like this. There has been too much violence and too much heartbreak and brutality," Salah said in a video posted to his 62.7 million followers on Instagram.

"The escalations in recent weeks is unbearable to witness. All lives are sacred and must be protected. The massacres need to stop, families are being torn apart."

After a visit by US President Joe Biden to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Israel said it had agreed to his request to allow aid into the besieged Gaza via Egypt due to mounting concern about dwindling supplies and warnings of a humanitarian catastrophe.

"What is clear now is that humanitarian aid to Gaza must be allowed immediately. The people there are in terrible conditions," Salah added.

"The scenes at the hospital last night were horrifying. The people of Gaza need food, water and medical supplies urgently.

"I am calling on world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of innocent souls - humanity must prevail."

Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah calls for end to 'massacres' amid Israel-Hamas conflict

Harry Maguire has come out in support of under-fire Jordan Henderson after he was booed by England fans during the side's international friendly versus Australia at Wembley. Henderson has been under the radar ever since he&nbsp;swapped his role as Liverpool skipper for the Saudi Pro League, joining Steven Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq in July.&nbsp;Maguire, who has been jeered by Manchester United and England supporters, feels those who slammed Henderson "aren't England fans".

Maguire told Sky Sports, "Proper England fans don't boo players. Don't boo players who dedicate their life to play and do everything they can to make this country have good memories and special moments for them and the fans and their families.&nbsp;I know a lot of top, top England fans and I know the England fans who have been with me ever since my debut."

They're right behind me and they're right behind Jordan as well. You heard a lot of cheers and yes, a few jeers, but they aren't England fans."

Henderson&nbsp;joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq from Liverpool in the close season. His switch has been widely criticised as many pointed out his&nbsp;previous public support for the LGBT community. It is to be noted that homosexuality is illegal in the Middle Eastern country, where Henderson will be seen playing in the near future. The 33-year-old was booed extensively in England's 1-0 win over Australia in the international friendly and the same incident followed in England's 3-1 win over Italy, following which they secured Euro 2024 spot.&nbsp;

Ahead of the Italy clash, England coach Gareth Southgate had urged people to stop the booing. "People might disagree with&nbsp;Jordan's stance ... but I don't think it's a reason to not select him and I don't actually think that's a reason to boo him," Southgate told reporters on Monday. "We'd like all the fans behind us. I'll always pick the players I think ... give us the best chance of winning, unless there's something that I feel is not appropriate. 'Proper England fans don't boo players': Harry Maguire comes in support of Jordan Henderson

England international Jordan Henderson has admitted that money was a 'contributing factor' in his move to Saudi Arabia. During one of the first TV interviews since his move to Al-Ettifaq, Henderson clarified his previous position wherein he said money was not a motivator for him.&nbsp;

The former Liverpool captain said he understood why people were disappointed in him and that he should have been more clear with his previous statements.&nbsp;

"Yeah, definitely, I've said that before. I tried a little bit, I had an interview a few months ago and maybe some of the stuff I said didn't come out in the way that I thought I said it," Henderson told Channel 4.&nbsp;

"An example of that would probably be in terms of when I said I didn't go out there solely for the money, I think that's a big difference. It's not a sole reason, rather than saying I didn't go out there for the money."

Ever since Henderson moved to&nbsp;At-Ettifaq to play under Liverpool great Steven Gerrard, he has come under heavy scrutiny from fans across the globe. Henderson was closely associated with the LGBTQ+ community during his stint at the Merseyside and his move to a country where gay rights are frowned upon is being regarded as the main reason for the pushback.&nbsp;

<h2>No regrets about the move&nbsp;</h2>

England international Jordan Henderson has admitted that money was a 'contributing factor' in his move to Saudi Arabia. During one of the first TV interviews since his move to Al-Ettifaq, Henderson clarified his previous position wherein he said money was not a motivator for him. The former Liverpool captain said he understood why people were disappointed in him and that he should have been more clear with his previous statements. "Yeah, definitely, I've said that before. I tried a little bit, I had an interview a few months ago and maybe some of the stuff I said didn't come out in the way that I thought I said it," Henderson told Channel 4. "An example of that would probably be in terms of when I said I didn't go out there solely for the money, I think that's a big difference. It's not a sole reason, rather than saying I didn't go out there for the money." Ever since Henderson moved to At-Ettifaq to play under Liverpool great Steven Gerrard, he has come under heavy scrutiny from fans across the globe. Henderson was closely associated with the LGBTQ+ community during his stint at the Merseyside and his move to a country where gay rights are frowned upon is being regarded as the main reason for the pushback. Jordan Henderson doesn't understand why he was booed by English fans

English referee chiefs have made public the VAR audio of the decision that led to&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;forward Luis Diaz having a goal wrongly disallowed in the Reds' controversial defeat at Tottenham.

VAR official Darren England and his assistant (AVAR) Daniel Cook did not over-rule the incorrect on-field decision of offside after Diaz had scored what would have been the opening of Saturday's Premier League clash in north London.

Liverpool&nbsp;went on to lose 2-1 and had Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota sent off as their unbeaten start to the season came to an end.

Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) released a statement admitting a "significant human error" had led to the wrong decision being made.

But&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;were furious with the blunder and said on Sunday they would explore their options given the "clear need for escalation and resolution"

PGMOL have provided a detailed report alongside the audio to the Premier League, which has in turn shared with&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;and the other 19 top-flight clubs.

The audio reveals the conversation between the VAR officials, who only realise their error after the match has restarted.

In the recording, England says "check complete, check complete. That's fine, perfect" before the replay operator and Cook question whether the correct decision has been made.

England utter an expletive when he realises the error and says "they've restarted the game. Can't do anything, can't do anything" as the replay operator makes repeated calls to delay the match.

The referees body said in a statement on Tuesday that "standards fell short of expectations" and it has identified three key learnings "to mitigate against the risk of a future error".

They will stress the importance of accuracy ahead of efficiency to video match officials, while a "new VAR communication protocol will be developed to enhance the clarity of communication between the referee and the VAR team in relation to on-field decisions".

"As an additional step to the process, the VAR will confirm the outcome of the VAR check process with the AVAR before confirming the final decision to the on-field officials," the statement said.

"We recognise standards fell short of expectations and acknowledged the error to&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;immediately after the conclusion of the fixture."

<h2>'Systemic weaknesses'</h2>

England and Cook have not been included among the officials for duty in the coming weekend's Premier League fixtures.

The pair had already been replaced for the remainder of their matchweek seven duties.

England was due to be fourth official at Nottingham Forest against Brentford on Sunday, with Cook scheduled to be assistant referee for Monday's Fulham versus Chelsea clash.

Premier League chiefs admitted human error and systemic weaknesses had contributed to the costly mistake.

Calling for "higher standards" in VAR decision-making, a Premier League spokesperson said: "Having reviewed all relevant footage of the disallowed Luis Diaz goal during the Tottenham Hotspur FC versus&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;FC match on Saturday, and PGMOL's report into the incident, it is clear that there were not only human errors but systemic weaknesses in the VAR process.

"We accept PGMOL's immediate recommendations to ensure that such failures are not repeated in the future.

"However, a wider review to seek consistently higher standards of VAR performance will be conducted by the Premier League and PGMOL, supported by other stakeholders, and where necessary further recommended actions will be brought forward and implemented.

"We have communicated fully with&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;FC on this matter and have shared PGMOL's findings and relevant footage of the incident with all Premier League clubs."

VAR audio released after blunder over Liverpool forward Diaz's disallowed goal

In a meeting of two former European champions in crisis, Ajax and Marseille drew 3-3 in "a crazy game" while Liverpool and West Ham were also winners Thursday in the opening round of Europa League group games.

In a meeting of two former European champions in crisis, Ajax and Marseille drew 3-3 in "a crazy game" while Liverpool and West Ham were also winners Thursday in the opening round of Europa League group games. Liverpool fell behind for the fourth time in five matches this season but fought back to beat LASK 3-1 in Linz to make Jurgen Klopp the first coach to win 50 European games at the Merseyside club. West Ham, who won the Conference League last season, also hit back to beat visiting Serbian club TSC Backa Topola 3-1 Brighton, making their European debut in the Europa League, and Aston Villa returning to Europe, after 12 years, in the Conference League, both fell behind early and although they each equalised twice, lost 3-2. In Amsterdam, Ajax, who have won just two games all season and sit 12th in the Dutch league met Marseille who are third in Ligue 1. However, after a meeting between Marseille fan representatives and the club's hierarchy reportedly turned nasty, coach Marcelino, only appointed in June, resigned on Tuesday after just seven games in charge. On Thursday, both teams tore into the game. Ajax carved open the visiting defence in the first 20 minutes and took a two-goal lead with goals by Carlos Borges and Steven Berghuis. "I knew the players would get back into the game and we'd score the goal that would set us free. It was a crazy game, but I also think we were in control," said interim Marseille coach Jacques Abardonado. Jonathan Clauss and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit back before halftime. Also read | UCL roundup: Lazio goalkeeper scores 95th min equaliser, Man City fashion comeback win 'It could have been 6-6' As both sides peppered the opposing goals, Kenneth Taylor restored the home edge but Aubameyang levelled again with 12 minutes left. Marseille finished with 25 attempts on goal. "It could have been 6-6," said Ajax coach Maurice Steijn. "I don't want to talk about a crisis, I saw a great match in a full stadium." In Brighton, Djibril Sidibe put AEK ahead with a bullet header from 13 yards. Brighton twice levelled with Joao Pedro's penalties. AEK twice regained the lead when sudden deflections in the rain opened up chances. Mijat Gacinovic buried one and Ezequiel Ponce tucked home the winner. "We can improve but it's difficult to accept this defeat," said Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi. "I can't be happy when we win at Old Trafford and sad today with a good performance." "We didn't show as much experience as AEK Athens." Liverpool, playing in the Europa League for the first time since finishing runners-up in 2016, changed their entire starting 11 away to LASK. They fell behind to a 14th-minute rocket from Florian Flecker. Darwin Nunez levelled with a 55th-minute penalty kick after Luis Diaz was brought down. After 61 minutes, Klopp started to replace teenagers with regular starters. Within two minutes they were ahead when Ryan Gravenberch, on his full debut, burst down the right and crossed low for Diaz to score from close range. Two minutes from the end Mohamed Salah, a second-half replacement, poked home a third. "I'm really, really happy, because I said before, I knew it would be difficult and it was difficult," said Klopp. "A well-deserved win in the end, and that's it." Elsewhere in the Europa League, Romelu Lukaku earned last year's beaten finalists Roma a 2-1 victory at Sheriff in Moldova. Abdallah Sima scored the only goal as Rangers beat Real Betis 1-0 in Glasgow. Bayer Leverkusen crushed Swedes Hacken 4-0, Rennes cruised past Maccabi Haifa 3-0 in France, and Spaniards Villarreal lost 2-0 to Panathinaikos in Greece. In the Conference League, Aston Villa fell behind in the third minute to Legia Warsaw and despite equalising twice lost 3-2. "We have to be demanding of ourselves to impose the game plan, but we didn't do it," said Villa boss Unai Emery, three-time winner of the Europa League. "I like demanding games that are a challenge and not easy. Now these will be the types of matches we will face in the group." WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Liverpool get kind Europa League draw, Brighton to face Ajax and Marseille

Liverpool's Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah is the latest target of the Saudi Pro League. Al-Ittihad, who signed Karim Benzema, Fabinho and N'Golo Kante earlier this transfer window, are reportedly going all out for the 31-year-old. However, it is believed Liverpool do not want to sell a player os Falah's calibre with the transfer window closing on September 1. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has also insisted that Salah is 100% committed to the Merseyside club.

Liverpool's new boy Alexis Mac Allister was given a huge reprieve by the Football Association (FA) on Tuesday, August 22 after his red card against Bournemouth was rescinded following a successful appeal. Mac Allister, on his Anfield debut, was sent off by referee Thomas Bramall in the 58th minute and saw the Reds play the final half an hour with 10 men. The direct card would have seen him miss this week’s contest against Newcastle United, but will now be available after a successful appeal.

<h2>Relief for Liverpool</h2>

"After the game, I saw it back. I think if you have a list of points, what we need to give a red card, besides contact there's nothing else, no other boxes ticked," Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager said on Saturday.

"It's a decision we all agree if he gives a yellow card VAR would not overturn it and if he gives a red card VAR will not overturn it because contact means it's not a clear and obvious mistake."

Despite the red card, the Reds started their home campaign on a high as they beat Bournemouth 3-1 to remain unbeaten in the Premier League. They started their season against Chelsea in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge last week.

"An independent regulatory commission has removed Alexis Mac Allister's three-match suspension following a claim of wrongful dismissal," a Football Association spokesperson said.

"The Liverpool midfielder was sent off for serious foul play during their Premier League game against Bournemouth on Saturday, 19 August."

The Reds will now hope for a better outcome in their upcoming fixture against Newcastle, who started their home season with a 5-1 win against Aston Villa. Klopp’s men will look to build on their fifth-place finish in the Premier League, having narrowly missed out on a Champions League place last season.

Klopp’s men will be involved in Europa League action this season and will have to play fiddle on Thursday night.

So far at the season of the season, they remain one of seven teams yet to lose a match in the Premier League. They currently sit on four points from their opening two matches with surprise package Brighton sitting top of the pile with six points. Champions Manchester City and Arsenal remain the other sides with a 100 per cent win record in the Premier League.

Liverpool have signed a much-needed defensive midfielder and it’s a name nobody would have seen coming at the start of the week, with the club officially announcing the arrival of Japan and Stuttgart captain Wataru Endo ahead of their Saturday fixture against Bournemouth.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has entered the Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, parting ways with&nbsp;Liverpool, on a three-year deal. The development was confirmed by both the clubs on Thursday (July 27).&nbsp;As per reports in the British media, Henderson acquired a big deal as the Saudi club -- who recently hired Steven Gerrard as the manager --&nbsp;would pay approximately a whopping 12 million pounds ($15.55 million) to the ex-Liverpool skipper along with add-ons.

Thus, the 33-year-old&nbsp;is likely to receive a weekly salary of around 700,000 pounds, according to British media. Henderson, who ended his 12-year-stint at Anfield, shared an emotional post on his official Instagram account, on Wednesday (July 16), as he confirmed his departure and wrote, "It's hard to put these last 12 years into words and it's even harder to say goodbye. I will always be a Red. Until the day I die. Thank you for everything. You'll never walk alone."

Henderson had a merry run in Liverpool, playing close to 500 games across all competitions -- such as the&nbsp;Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. However, his move to the Saudi Arabian side is also making waves for another reason. Saudi is a place where&nbsp;homosexuality is illegal and Henderson has often been a vocal advocate&nbsp;for LGBTQ+ rights as well as an avid supporter of Stonewall's Rainbow Laces campaign.

As for the Al-Ettifaq club, it finished at the seventh spot in&nbsp;the top-tier Saudi Pro League last season. With the admission of Henderson and an astute young manager in Gerrard, a lot is expected of the club in the coming years.&nbsp;

Speaking about Gerrard's signing, it surprised many as English managers often stay in their home country. He further added, "Look, at the end of the day we don’t know if Steven Gerrard had a lot of possibilities at this very moment, but I feel like as a manager if you’re out of the picture for too long maybe the door is slowly getting shut on you for these types of opportunities. Maybe it was one of those things he felt like ‘Hey, I want to stay busy, I’m still young, this is right now the opportunity I’ve got so let’s grab it'."

OFFICIAL! Liverpool's Jordan Henderson joins Saudi club Al-Ettifaq on a three-year deal

Former Liverpool player Ryan Babel recently opened up on Steven Gerrard's surprising move to manage Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. Babel, who shared the Liverpool dressing room with Gerrard, feels there is a trend&nbsp;of young managers and former players entering the managerial world. He believes this&nbsp;might have played a part in Gerrard's mind to consider switching&nbsp;to the Saudi.

Backing Babel's point of view, there is a huge influx of players and young managers in the Saudi Pro League, mainly due to financial gains. While English managers mostly prefer to stay in their home country, Gerrard's move might have come as a surprise but it can surely be seen as the beginning of a new trend. Much of this will depend on how he progresses&nbsp;in managing&nbsp;Al-Ettifaq.

On being a part of the Saudi club, Gerrard told Al-Ettifaq's Twitter account on July 23 (Sunday), "When I went to Saudi I got a real family feeling. It made me actually feel welcomed. There are three things I always consider in order -- it needs to be right for my family first and foremost. We have to be excited and motivated by the challenge."

"Secondly I think the football project needs to be ambitious, it needs to be for the right reasons, and then of course you need to feel secure with the contract, but this comes at the very end," he stated.

In recent times, Cristiano Ronaldo (Al-Nassr), Karim Benzeme (Al-Ittihad), etc. have moved to the Saudi League. Even&nbsp;Robbie Fowler, a former teammate of Gerrard,&nbsp;recently took over as the coach of the Saudi second-division team Al-Qadsiah.&nbsp;

All eyes are now on Gerrard and how Al-Ettifaq fares under his guidance. In the last season, they ended seventh in the top-tier Saudi&nbsp;League.

'It is.....' Ryan Babel reacts to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard's move to Saudi as Al-Ettifaq manager

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is set to join former teammate Steven Gerrard at Saudi club Al Ettifaq after a deal was struck between the clubs, The Athletic reported on Wednesday.

Henderson, 33, led the Reds to their first Premier League title for 30 years in 2020, a year after lifting the Champions League.

Klopp has also seen midfielders Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner depart on free transfers since the end of last season.

But Liverpool have reinforced that area of the field with the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool maintained their pursuit of Champions League football next season and pushed Leicester ever closer to the relegation as Curtis Jones scored twice in a 3-0 win at the King Power on Monday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold rounded off another fine performance in his new hybrid role between right-back and midfield with a stunning strike as Liverpool closed to within one point of the top four.

Jurgen Klopp's men still need a late-season collapse from Newcastle or Manchester United, but a seven-game winning streak from the Reds has upped the pressure on their rivals, who both have three games remaining to Liverpool's two.

"It's all we can do," said Klopp. "It would be a real shame if they slip and we're not there. So we have to do our job.

"I think we have qualified for European football which six weeks ago wasn't in sight."

Seven years on from shocking the world to win the title, Leicester's Premier League days look numbered as they remain two points from safety with two games remaining.

They face another daunting task when they travel to Newcastle next Monday in a match that could seal their fate should Everton or Leeds win over the weekend.

"It's pretty simple, we need to win our next game," said Leicester interim boss Dean Smith. "It will be tough at St James' Park. It would be nice to take the lead for once."

The Foxes' defensive frailties were again exposed as a bright start from the hosts was quickly forgotten when Jones struck twice in three minutes just after the half-hour mark.

Luis Diaz was allowed to race onto a long ball forward from Alisson Becker before it broke for Mohamed Salah to cross for the unmarked Jones to tap in the opener at the far post.

Salah was the provider again moments later as Jones produced a magnificent touch to control and finish past the helpless Daniel Iversen.

"I thought the second goal looked like we had frazzled minds from the kick-off," added Smith.

"We have to have clearer minds and think clear under pressure."

The home crowd quickly turned on their own side and there were boos when Cody Gakpo fired straight at Iversen with a glorious chance to make it 3-0.

Scoring goals has not been Leicester's problem this season, but they even looked blunt in attack as belief drained from Smith's men.

Liverpool's upturn in form after a difficult season has coincided with Alexander-Arnold's new role as a deep-lying playmaker in midfield when in possession.

The England international displayed his quality on the ball with a sumptuous strike into the top corner 19 minutes from time after Salah tapped a free-kick into his path.

The Egyptian should have had his customary goal to add to a hat-trick of assists.

Salah was sent clean through on goal by Gakpo, but slotted wide with just Iversen to beat to the astonishment of most inside the stadium.

That miss could yet prove important with Liverpool four goals behind Newcastle on goal difference.

But the visitors got the main job done with another three points ensuring they will at least play Europa League football next season.

English Premier League: Liverpool thrash Leicester 3-0 in bid to enter top-four

Liverpool crushed Leeds 6-1 as Cody Gakpo's controversial opener provided the spark for the Reds' first win in five Premier League games on Monday.

Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead at Elland Road when Gakpo's goal was allowed to stand despite the ball striking Trent Alexander-Arnold's arm in the build-up.

It was reported the VAR official did not check the incident because it happened too far back in the move, but Leeds were furious at the perceived injustice.

Mohamed Salah rubbed salt into Leeds' wounds when he increased Liverpool's lead four minutes later before Luis Sinisterra got one back for the struggling hosts.

Diogo Jota's double, another Salah strike and Darwin Nunez's late effort ensured Liverpool ended their five-game winless run in all competitions.

After coming within a whisker of winning a quadruple last season, Liverpool have been reduced to scrambling to reach next season's Europa League or Europa Conference League, with the Champions League seemingly out of reach.

With that target in mind, the eighth-placed Reds are now within two points of seventh-placed Brighton.

"It's the best game we've played this season from all different perspectives," Klopp said.

"My favourite part was in the 92nd minute when we chased the poor boy on the ball from Leeds. The counter-pressing was the best for, I want to say, decades!"

Klopp has compared fan criticism of Liverpool potentially not making big-money transfers in the coming close-season as like a five-year-old asking for a Ferrari for Christmas.

But on the evidence of this composed display and the recent fightback from two goals down to draw 2-2 with leaders Arsenal, Liverpool still have the foundations in place for a return to prominence next term.

"The second half against Arsenal was super important to us. We have to do what we did tonight again and again," Klopp said.

"I hope these one-and-a-half games gives us the right sign for the end of the season.

"I would like to see us with the same desire and passion. That's the job, to bring it consistently."

Leeds crumbled again eight days after their 5-1 home defeat against Crystal Palace and sit just two points above the relegation zone with seven games left.

Javi Gracia's team were booed off after becoming only the second club to concede five or more home goals in successive Premier League games.

<h2>Rampant Reds</h2>

After marking the 34th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster before kick-off, Liverpool quickly seized the momentum before their dubious opener in the 35th minute.

Alexander-Arnold blocked Junior Firpo's pass with his elbow before picking out Salah.

When Salah passed back to Alexander-Arnold, the right-back squared for Gakpo to slot home from close range.

Leeds were fuming, only for VAR to opt against checking the incident despite their protests.

Gakpo's fifth goal since signing from PSV Eindhoven in January was followed by the latest example of Salah tormenting Leeds.

Salah's eighth goal in six appearances against Leeds came in ruthless fashion.

Jota was allowed to advance unchecked before slipping a pass to Salah, who finished with unerring precision.

Ibrahima Konate handed Leeds a goal in the 47th minute when the Liverpool centre-back allowed himself to be dispossessed by Sinisterra on the edge of the area.

Sinisterra gratefully accepted the gift as he clipped his shot over the exposed Alisson Becker.

But Leeds' comeback hopes were extinguished within five minutes as Curtis Jones' raking pass picked out Jota, who drilled past Illan Meslier from just inside the area for his first league goal in 12 months.

VAR did disallow a Liverpool goal when Salah's effort was ruled out for offside against Virgil van Dijk, but the rampant Reds still bagged their fourth of the night in the 64th minute.

Gakpo took Andrew Robertson's pass and teed up Salah for an emphatic finish from six yards.

Jota swept in Jordan Henderson's cross after 73 minutes before Nunez put the final flourish on Liverpool's powerful performance when he controlled Alexander-Arnold's pass on his chest and fired home in the 90th minute.
