Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has&nbsp;made a bold statement on&nbsp;the future of Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez as the club enters a crucial phase in its recent history.&nbsp;After the 2-0 defeat to Everton on Wednesday (April 24)&nbsp;the&nbsp;Reds’&nbsp;title hopes are out of their hands as they now focus on the&nbsp;summer&nbsp;where&nbsp;big decisions will be made&nbsp;on the future of the new manager and club legends Salah. Speaking to Sky Sports after&nbsp;Liverpool’s&nbsp;derby defeat to Everton, Carragher reckons the duo could soon leave the club.

<h2>Carra makes bold statement on future of&nbsp;Salah</h2>

"There is&nbsp;a real&nbsp;discussion for the new manager about what the future holds for Mo Salah -&nbsp;it's&nbsp;the first time&nbsp;we've&nbsp;asked that question. He only has a year to go on his contract.

"He's&nbsp;looked a shadow of himself for a lot of this season&nbsp;but especially&nbsp;since&nbsp;he's&nbsp;come back from injury.&nbsp;He is&nbsp;Liverpool's&nbsp;legend, superstar, one of the all-time greats. But&nbsp;he's&nbsp;been so far off it."

Speaking of Nunez, Carra thinks he has&nbsp;been given&nbsp;enough time to impress and has failed on big occasions&nbsp;including&nbsp;scoring at Old Trafford and in the derby on Wednesday. He also thinks Liverpool will not challenge for the Premier League title if they stay with Nunez as the center forward.

"You want him to do well because he gives everything,&nbsp;he causes trouble, he&nbsp;gets the odd goal. But after two years, when Liverpool are going for the title or in big games, you need your man to score at Old Trafford or Goodison Park.&nbsp;This&nbsp;is the business end.&nbsp;He's&nbsp;ground to a halt.

"After two&nbsp;years&nbsp;there's&nbsp;going to be no improvement in him.&nbsp;This&nbsp;is what he is. He can cause trouble&nbsp;but&nbsp;he's&nbsp;erratic with his finishing -&nbsp;it's&nbsp;not enough to win you&nbsp;trophies&nbsp;so&nbsp;there's&nbsp;a big decision to&nbsp;be made&nbsp;on him," said&nbsp;Carra.

The summer will also see the arrival of a new manager at the helm for Liverpool&nbsp;with&nbsp;Jurgen Klopp set to leave. The Liverpool manager had announced his intention to leave the club at the end of the season with Wolves game on the final day of the Premier League season&nbsp;marking&nbsp;his farewell.

Jurgen&nbsp;Klopp’s&nbsp;final season as Liverpool manager is all set for a dramatic collapse after the club lost its latest Premier League match against arch-rivals Everton on Wednesday (April 24) at Goodison Park. 'One of the better Dutch coaches': Virgil Van Dijk heaps praise on Jurgen Klopp's potential successor

Liverpool are all set to follow in the footsteps of their arch-rivals Manchester United as they look to appoint a new manager&nbsp;at the helm&nbsp;for the 2024-25 season. With current manager Jurgen Klopp set to leave at the end of the season, the 19-time English champions have set their sights on Arne Slot, current Feyenoord manager. It is reported that Liverpool have opened negotiations with&nbsp;Feyenoord and have made formal contact with the Dutchman for a move to England's top flight.

<h2>Arne Slot to Liverpool?</h2>

According to several reports in the Dutch and English media, Slot remains one of the tempting options Liverpool are keeping tabs on&nbsp;at the moment.&nbsp;This&nbsp;comes a week after the Reds&nbsp;were linked&nbsp;with Ruben Amiron, current Sporting Lisbon manager. Slot&nbsp;is considered&nbsp; as&nbsp;a good candidate&nbsp;having&nbsp;impressed while working at the Rotterdam-based club. Under his guidance, Feyenoord won the 202-23 Eredivisie title while also taking home the KNVB Cup in the 2023-24 season.&nbsp;

Slot was close to winning a European Trophy with Feyenoord,&nbsp;having finished&nbsp;runners-up to AS Roma in the Europa Conference League in the 2021-22 season.&nbsp;

As things stand, Liverpool will have big shoes to fill in the summer when they&nbsp;decide to&nbsp; announce their successor to Klopp. Current Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso was the prime target to replace Klopp, but he has now committed his future to the club, ruling out a return.&nbsp;

Liverpool to follow Manchester United’s footsteps, consider THIS Dutch manager to replace Jurgen Klopp

Atalanta progressed to the Europa League semi-finals despite losing 1-0 to Liverpool on Thursday as they triumphed 3-1 on aggregate to move one step closer to a first ever European final for the Serie A side. Atalanta had stunned the Premier League club 3-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final last week at Anfield, levelling another huge blow to Liverpool's dreams of a fairytale ending in manager Juergen Klopp's final season.

"We gave ourselves a massive hurdle (in the first leg), but I liked the game a lot for a long time, the commitment, the desire, the power the boys showed was incredible," Klopp told TNT Sports. "It is mixed emotions. We would have wished that we could have gone to Dublin (for the final), but that hasn't happened. "We now have one competition left (Premier League) and we will throw ourselves into that completely."

Liverpool got off to a quick start in Italy as talisman Mohammed Salah scored from the penalty spot in the seventh minute, fuelling hope that a remarkable comeback was in the making. But while Klopp's men looked little like the shaky side who were steamrolled by Atalanta at Anfield, particularly in the first half, Gian Piero Gasperini's team held on in what the manager had called the biggest game in the team's history to earn a semi-final place against Olympique de Marseille.

"If you don't win without danger, there's no glory to your triumph," Gasperini said. "The fans always ask us for the shirt to be soaked in sweat, and that's one thing we must have at a minimum."

Salah had Liverpool's best chance at a second goal when he was sent in one-on-one against goalkeeper Juan Musso, but he chipped the ball well wide. Later in the first half, Salah almost set up Luis Diaz with a ball over the top into the area, but it hit the arm of Isak Hien. Liverpool screamed for a penalty to no avail, and Diaz was booked for dissent.

"Last week we were very poor and they had a good game," Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk told TNT Sports. "They deserved to go through because we made it far too difficult for ourselves. "Tonight was a good game and we showed great fight. It was an improvement but the reality is we are out. We are disappointed to be out of the competition as we really wanted to win it."

Liverpool, who won the League Cup earlier this season, now turn their attention back to the Premier League. They are level on 71 points with second-placed Arsenal and two points behind leaders Manchester City.

They play at Fulham on Sunday in a quick turnaround. "We won tonight and we kept a clean sheet, so there are so many more positives we can take. Yes, it is a bad feeling to be out so we have to get back up," Van Dijk added. "We have been through difficult moments all together, so showing maturity and togetherness is the key to this. We need everyone now for the last push in the league."

AS ROMA BEAT AC MILAN TO GO AHEAD

AS Roma beat AC Milan 2-1 at a buzzing Stadio Olimpico on Thursday to complete a 3-1 aggregate win and set up a semi-final showdown with Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League.

Defender Gianluca Mancini, whose 17th-minute header had helped Roma edge Milan 1-0 at the San Siro last week, gave them another early lead in the quarter-final second leg, scoring on a rebound from close range in the 12th minute.

Paulo Dybala doubled the advantage for the hosts 10 minutes later with a curled shot inside the far post before Matteo Gabbia pulled one back for Milan five minutes from time, nodding home a cross from forward Rafael Leao.

Last season's runners-up Roma, who were beaten on penalties by Sevilla after a 1-1 draw in the final, advanced to their fourth European semi-final in a row. They will next face the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions Leverkusen, who beat West Ham United.

Newly-crowned Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen reached the Europa League semi-finals but almost lost their season-long unbeaten record as they struck late to draw 1-1 away at West Ham United for a 3-1 aggregate victory on Thursday.

Xavi Alonso's side trailed to Michail Antonio's early header and were far below their usual high standards in the first half as the dominant hosts carved out several more chances. Leverkusen, who clinched their first German title at the weekend, improved dramatically after the break and squandered numerous opportunities before substitute Jeremie Frimpong's shot deflected past Lukasz Fabianski in the 89th minute.

The final whistle sparked loud celebrations from the travelling Leverkusen fans who can now look forward to a semi-final against AS Roma who they lost to at that stage last season. Leverkusen are now unbeaten in 44 matches in all competitions this season and remain on course for a treble.

Liverpool bows out as Atalanta book Europa League semi-final place

It was a Thursday (April 11) evening horror show for English clubs in Europe after Liverpool stumbled to a 3-0 defeat against Atalanta at home in the Europa League. On the other hand, West Ham United also dented their chances of Champions League qualification after they lost to Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg ties of Europe’s second-tier competition. The results now have huge bearings on the final outcome of how many teams will qualify for the Champions League from Europe as England now drop in the UEFA coefficient rankings.&nbsp; However, it is Aston Villa who will have suffered the most despite their 2-1 over Lille in the Europa Conference League.

<h2>Aston Villa's aspirations of Champions League qualification dented</h2>

Going into Thursday evening, England were second in the UEFA coefficient rankings, however, defeats for West Ham United and Liverpool meant that England dropped to third with Germany replacing them in second. So as things stand, England will have only four automatic Champions League spots to play with as Aston Villa sit fifth and will have to contend with a Europa League berth. Had England been fifth it would have meant both Villa and fourth placed Tottenham would have played in next season’s Champions League.

Currently, Italy’s AS Roma and Germany’s Borussia Dortmund are qualifying as fifth placed teams from their respective leagues. However, the job is far from done for the latter as Germany has only three teams in Europe while England still has five teams who can boost their chances for more spots in the Champions League qualification.

UEFA Coefficient Rankings

Italy: 18.714

Germany: 16.928

England: 16.875

Villa though can still dictate and secure a Champions League berth for next season. Considering they win the Europa Conference League coupled with other teams reaching at least the semifinal of their European competitions (Champions League, Europa League), it could see them reach the premier competition. While teams get an automatic Europa League berth on winning the Conference League, Villa’s prize could be even bigger considering their fate is still in their hands.

<h2>Can Villa still miss out on the Champions League?</h2>

In another scenario, Villa could miss out on the Champions League qualification if they win the Conference League and finish fifth in the Premier League. If West Ham United win the Europa League, it will be the Hammers who will replace the fifth placed team in the Premier League as only five teams can qualify from the same league. In this scenario, it will be the fifth placed team that will have to prophet its berth to West Ham.

Why defeats for Liverpool, West Ham in Europa League dented Villa's Champions League qualification prospect?

Liverpool slumped to a shock 3-0 home defeat by Atalanta on Thursday as Gianluca Scamacca struck twice for the Italian side in their Europa League quarter-final first leg. On a chastening evening for former European champions in the continent's second-tier club competition, AC Milan lost 1-0 at home to fellow Italian side AS Roma. Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen secured a last-gasp 2-0 home win over West Ham United.

Atalanta took the lead at Liverpool after 38 minutes when an unmarked Scamacca latched on to Davide Zappacosta's cross to strike a low shot past keeper Caoimhin Kelleher who should have done more to keep the effort out.

Scamaca pounced on poor Liverpool defending to fire home from a fine cross by Charles De Ketelaere in the 60th minute before Mario Pasalic sealed the rout seven minutes from time with a simple finish off a rebound from Kelleher.

"Unfortunately, there is nothing really positive to say about the game," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp told TNT Sports. "I know already that if we do a couple of things better, we will be better. Can we win it back? Yes, if we play good it is possible. Can we win 3-0? I have no idea. But this feels really bad and that's important."

Late strikes by Bayer Leverkusen substitutes Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface earned the Bundesliga leaders a two-goal advantage over West Ham and they remained undefeated this season with 37 wins and five draws across all competitions.

Leverkusen dominated the game but the visitors' keeper Lukasz Fabianski pulled off a string of saves and kept out dangerous efforts by Alejandro Grimaldo and Patrik Schick to keep the scores level at the break.

Hofmann gave Leverkusen the lead in the 83rd minute, scoring with a first-time effort and striker Boniface doubled the advantage in stoppage time with a header into the bottom corner.

The hosts, who can clinch the Bundesliga title on Sunday, had 33 attempts on goal -- 13 on target -- compared to one sole effort by midfielder Mohammed Kudus for Europa Conference League holders West Ham.

Roma upset hosts Milan as Gianluca Mancini scored to end the capital club's nine-match winless run against Stefano Pioli's side. Roma, who had last beaten Milan in 2019, took the lead thanks to Mancini's pinpoint header from Paulo Dybala's corner in the 17th minute.

"We should have been more courageous," Milan coach Stefano Pioli said. "We created some chances, but I didn't see the same quality as in the last matches. "This team can do more, I know that. I didn't expect the defeat, we weren't precise, we lacked the flair."

Portuguese champions Benfica claimed a 2-1 home win over Olympique de Marseille through goals by Rafa Silva and Argentine forward Angel Di Maria. The second legs will be played next Thursday.

Europa League: Liverpool humbled by Atalanta, AS Roma beat AC Milan

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has reached a verbal agreement in principle to join Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp, who departs at the end of the season, a Sky Germany report has claimed. Amorim has been in the hot seat to join the English club ever since Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso announced he was not moving to Merseyside to join his former club.&nbsp;

According to the publication, Amorim has discussed a three-year contract to join Liverpool, although a final deal was yet to be signed. Reports indicate that returning Michael Edwards has a big say in the signing of Amorim as the next manager.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Amorim has been a hot pick for several clubs looking for a manager. Apart from Liverpool, the Portuguese has been on Barcelona and Bayern Munich's managerial shortlist as well.

<h2>'Can't say like Xabi' - Amorim</h2>

Notably, on the eve of the Lisbon derby against Benfica, which Sporting ultimately won 2-1, Amorim gave the most clear hint that he was planning a move to Liverpool.&nbsp;

The Portuguese said there was no guarantee that he will stay in Portugal beyond the season to oversee Sporting.&nbsp;

"I cannot guarantee that I will stay at Sporting next season," Amorim said in a press conference when quizzed about his future.&nbsp;

"I can’t say that like Xabi Alonso did. We have time to discuss my future, we will do that at the right time," he added.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/revealed-heres-how-much-liverpool-would-have-to-pay-sporting-to-land-ruben-amorim-after-alonso-snub-705992" target="_blank">Also read | Revealed! Here’s how much Liverpool would have to pay Sporting to land Ruben Amorim after Alonso snub</a>

Amorim added if Sporting did not win any silverware this season, he would leave the club.&nbsp;

“Sporting is already dealing with the future, I can’t decide. I gave my word and I can’t go back on it. If we don’t win titles, I’ll leave Sporting. It was clear from the start, it was the bet I passed on to the players. We have to win titles. First we’ll see if we can do it and then we’ll decide things."

Amorim has a release clause in his contract which means if Liverpool want to bring him to Anfield next season, they would have to simply trigger the clause. Amorim can be allowed to leave the Portuguese club for as little as $16 million when the release clause becomes active in the summer. The fee further drops to $10.5 million the following season.

Klopp leaves Liverpool at the end of the season after successful nine years at the helm. The club is currently involved in a three-leg title race whilst challenging for the Europa League where there is a high possibility that Alonso's Leverkusen could meet them in the final.&nbsp;

Sporting coach Ruben Amorim reaches agreement in principle to join Liverpool: Report

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has urged his players to be angry when they face arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday (Apr 7) evening. The Merseyside Reds are currently challenging for the title while the hosts battle for the Champions League spot.&nbsp;

Ten Hag urging his troops to be angry stems from the agonising defeat against Chelsea where they conceded twice in the stoppage time to lose the game 3-4.&nbsp;

"We can play to a very high standard. We can compete with the best and beat the best in the Premier League. When you can do that, you can also do it across Europe. We need to learn how to bring big games over the line," said Ten Hag.

"We have to recover very quickly. We have to turn this around. We will be in a positive mood and we will be looking forward. We have to take energy but we will be mad, and angry. From anger, you can take a lot of energy and that is how we have to do it," he added.&nbsp;

United recently dumped Liverpool out of the FA Cup after scoring late in extra time to stun the 2022 champions who were gunning for an unprecedented quadruple. Ten Hag's men had a horrid game but Liverpool failing to take their chances allowed United to come back into the game.&nbsp;

<h2>Three-horse title race</h2>

The title race has been a three-horse race for the major part of the year. Both Manchester City and Arsenal collected three points from their weekend matches and attention now turns to Liverpool to do the same.&nbsp;

Liverpool are currently second in the points table, one point behind leaders Arsenal, having played a game less. A win against United would massively boost Liverpool's credentials but a loss or draw would be a huge dent.&nbsp;

Manchester United players urged to be ‘angry’ by Erik ten Hag to stop Liverpool’s title hunt

Liverpool reclaimed the Premier league lead in an enthralling title race as Alexis Mac Allister's thunderbolt and a late header by Cody Gakpo secured a nervy 3-1 home victory over bottom club Sheffield United on Thursday.

Juergen Klopp's side have 70 points from 30 games, two ahead of Arsenal and three more than champions Manchester City, both of whom won on Wednesday to crank up the pressure.

A bizarre opener by Darwin Nunez after 17 minutes when he closed down keeper Ivo Grbic and blocked his attempted clearance into the net looked set to open the floodgates as Liverpool sought the win they needed to dislodge Arsenal from top spot.

But the Reds were way below their best and an adventurous United side stunned the Anfield crowd shortly after halftime when a Connor Bradley own goal levelled the scores. The visitors looked capable of hanging on for a shock point before a loose ball came out to Mac Allister in the 76th minute and he smashed a swerving right-foot effort into the top corner.

Gakpo then made sure of the points in the 90th as Liverpool took another step towards the perfect Klopp send-off as the manager prepares to leave at the end of the season.

"We had to dig very deep, but that is normal. Our attitude was good, the football was not great in a lot of moments," Klopp said. "Then Macca's goal was the complete game changer."

United are 10 points adrift of the safety zone and look set for a swift return to the Championship.

<h2>LIVERPOOL KNACK</h2>

If the key to winning titles is to keep grinding out wins even when performance levels dip, then Liverpool have the knack.

United were supposed to sacrificial lambs under the Anfield lights but gave their hosts a mighty scare until midfielder Mac Allister's moment of magic settled the nerves.

Liverpool were struggling to quell a lively United side but the Argentine took matters in to his own hands with a finish that sent the home crowd into raptures -- his fierce shot spinning and rising into the top corner past a helpless Grbic.

"You're hoping that shot flies into the Kop and you write off a few more seconds. But that's why these are world-class players, they go right to the end and more," a rueful Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said.

If that goal was spectacular, Liverpool's opener had been comical as Grbic took too long to make a routine clearance and Nunez jumped to block with the ball rebounding into an empty net off the Uruguayan who had his back to goal.

Liverpool had begun in sloppy fashion with James McAtee wasting a first-minute chance for the visitors when his effort was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.

Despite having a remarkable 83% of possession Liverpool never looked secure and an increasingly confident United equalised when Gustavo Hamer met a cross with a header which glanced in off the leg of the unfortunate Bradley.

Liverpool would not be denied though and chalked up their seventh win in their last eight league games to keep their title destiny in their own hands.

Premier League: Liverpool back on top as late goals ensures dramatic win over Sheffield United

Pep Guardiola has conceded that the title race was out of Manchester City's hands after the treble winners played an attritional draw against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday (March 31).&nbsp;

Guardiola was speaking at the post-match conference where he was quizzed if Liverpool were the clear favourite for the title.

“Yes. Always who is first is favourites, second is Arsenal and we are third,” the manager said.

Questioned if there were concerns that with only 27 points to play for, his team would fail to catch the two teams in front of him, the Man City boss gave a measured response.&nbsp;

“It’s not in our hands. All we can do is think of Aston Villa [on Wednesday]. If you are top of the league – like we’ve been before – you are favourites," he said.&nbsp;

“We prefer to win, obviously. We take the point. A tight game. I recognised my team, I’m so proud. They tried. Our intention was there. We’ll see what happens. We need to refresh our minds and legs before Aston Villa.”

<h2>City-Arsenal tie remains goalless</h2>

The much-hyped title decider between the two teams was a rather dull affair with both managers refusing to take the extra risk to secure the three points.&nbsp;

Arsenal, playing away from home, opted for a defensive approach, often defending in a 5-3-2 shape which nullified the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva from operating between the lines and in half-spaces.&nbsp;

Man City striker Erling Haaland cut a sorry figure throughout the evening and could barely get touches inside the opposition penalty box. The centre-back pairing of Gabriel and William Saliba did a titanic job while Declan Rice in the midfield kept the Arsenal defence resolute.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Liverpool came from behind to secure a 2-1 win against Brighton at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp's men conceded in under 90 seconds, courtesy of a stunning finish from Danny Welbeck. However, the Reds kept their composure and continued to create chances before Luis Diaz pounced on a back pass from a Brighton defender and scored past Bart Verbruggen to equalise the scoreline.&nbsp;

From thereon, the pressure was only increased on Roberto De Zerbi's team and eventually, Mo Salah slotted one to the back of the net in the second half to collect three crucial points for his team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

‘It’s not in our hands’: Guardiola on Premier League title race after Arsenal draw

Arsenal nullified reigning champions Manchester City's attack for a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday (Mar 31), allowing Liverpool to take top spot on a pivotal day in the Premier League's three-way title race.&nbsp;

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal, in the hunt for their first league title in 20 years, are second in the table on 65 points with nine games remaining, while City are third with 64. Liverpool, on 67 points, claimed the lead with their 2-1 comeback victory over Brighton &amp; Hove Albion earlier on Sunday.

The match failed to live up to its billing as a battle of titans. City dominated possession with 72.2 per cent and came at Arsenal in waves.

But the visitors frustrated Pep Guardiola's men - including league-leading scorer Erling Haaland - with a textbook defensive display to extend their unbeaten league run to nine games and end their streak of eight losses at the Etihad.

Usually prolific Man City were restricted to just one shot on goal and it was the first time in 58 games that they have not scored at home.

"We want all the three points obviously, and we tried our best to get the win but we'll take the point and move on," Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard said.

"We had to defend a lot, a bit more deep than we would have liked. It was a tight game and a tough one. So much can happen before the end of the season, we have to take it game-by-game."

Gabriel Jesus had Arsenal's best chances, firing two shots just wide in the first half and then narrowly failing to meet an inviting cross from Bukayo Saka.

City's best opportunity was Kevin De Bruyne's early corner kick that glanced off the shoulder of Nathan Ake but fell to keeper David Raya.

City parked themselves in Arsenal's half over a final tense few minutes but the visitors held strong.

The normally reliable Haaland failed to make contact with the ball when he seemed to have a simple finish from Josko Gvardiol's header late in the game, holding his head in his hands in frustration while the City fans groaned.

While Arsenal lacked the firepower of recent weeks - they had scored an astounding 33 goals in eight successive league victories - shutting down City was mission accomplished for the Gunners, who were clobbered 4-1 at the Etihad last season before City ran away with the title.

"We can't be satisfied when we draw," said Arsenal defender William Saliba. "We leave with one point, but we are not satisfied. We know they are the best team in the world, so we have to be focused.

The compensation package that the Reds may have to offer to avail the Portuguese's services has now been revealed. According to a report in The Telegraph, Amorim has a release clause in his contract which means if Liverpool want to bring him to Anfield next season, they would have to trigger the clause simply. Amorim can be allowed to leave the Portuguese club for as little as $16 million when the release clause becomes active in the summer. The fee further drops to $10.5 million the following season. While the fee might appear exponential, especially when hiring a manager, the recent market movement suggests that Liverpool are getting a bargain. Notably, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich had to shell out $32.4 million to appoint RB Leipzig's Julian Nagelsmann in 2021 while Chelsea under Todd Boehly spent an astronomical $27 million to acquire Brighton's Graham Potter. Liverpool's first choice to replace the charismatic Jurgen Klopp was Alonso. The fact that the Spaniard played for the club and has a clear connection to the city meant that strong rumours were going around, suggesting that Alonso was all set to come to La AXA next season. Also read | Premier League: Liverpool to miss out on signing Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso Alonso releases statement However, with Leverkusen on the precipice of winning the Bundesliga title and the club moving ahead in the right direction, Alonso preferred to stay in Germany and build a dynasty with his young team. “Last week I had a meeting [with club officials] and informed them of the decision to continue being coach of Bayer Leverkusen,” said Alonso, ahead of the start of the final leg of the season. “After lot of talks about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. I feel this is the right place to be for me as a young coach. My job at Bayer is not over. I want to help the club, help the players to develop, the board is great … it’s all fantastic here," he added. Klopp leaves Liverpool at the end of the season after successful nine years at the helm. The club is currently involved in a three-leg title race whilst challenging for the Europa League where there is a high possibility that Alonso's Leverkusen could meet them in the final. Revealed! Here’s how much Liverpool would have to pay Sporting to land Ruben Amorim after Alonso snub

Liverpool have pulled out of the race to sign Xabi Alonso as their next manager after reports in Germany stated that the Reds have cooled their interest considering he is likely to stay at Bayer Leverkusen. Alonso, a former Liverpool player has been a sensation with his coaching technique leading Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga and the quarterfinal of the Europa League. They are also in the DFB Pokal semifinal and will be the favourites to win that title as well considering the caliber of their opponents. Alonso could also cross paths with Liverpool in the Europa League if both teams reach the final of the tournament.

With Klopp leaving and Alonso all but out of the race to be the new manager, the Reds could switch their attention to Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon. The Portugal gaffer is considered by many as the next Jose Mourinho and has been doing great with the Lisbon outfit.

Premier League: Liverpool to miss out on signing Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso

English Premier League side Liverpool's outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp got irked at a reporter after losing a thriller to Manchester United in FA Cup on Sunday (March 17). Klopp termed the reporter's question as stupid when asked if his side lacked the energy in extra-time during the match. Notably, United's Amad Diallo scored a goal in the 121st minute to help his team win 4-3 and book a place in the competition's semi-finals.

"It's a bit of a stupid question, If you see us often, you can ask us the other times why we have so much energy. I don't know how many games we've had recently and how many Manchester United have had. This is sport. I am very disappointed by that question, but you thought it was wise," Klopp replied to the reporter's question.

'I had other things to think': Jurgen Klopp plays down rivalry with Man United ahead of FA Cup clash

England have named their squad for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium as they prepare for the Euro 2024. The announcement made on Thursday (Mar 14) saw little surprises but saw the return of Joe Gomez after three years in the England squad. Manager Gareth Southgate named the 25-man squad which consists of players from four leagues in Europe. Southgate also revealed that Ben White was not included in the squad having asked to stay at Arsenal.

<h2>Gomez&nbsp;returns after three years</h2>

One of the consistent performers in the Liverpool squad, Southgate had a decision to make when White opted to withdraw. Gomez, who has been in the Starting XI in recent times owing to several players either being injured or suspended at Liverpool, attracted the attention of England's manager which saw him lift the League Cup glory. He last played for England in October 2020 when the Three Lions beat Wales 3-0 in an all-British affair.

<h2>Ben White to sit out</h2>

Reflecting on Ben White’s reluctance to join the squad, Southgate was unclear on the reason why he opted to stay away. However, according to reports, White is unhappy and has fallen out with assistant coach Steve Holland.

"I spoke to him post-Qatar and there was reticence from his side. I don't know why that is. There is no issue between us at all and there's also no issue with Steve, which has been mentioned in articles and I don't like that," said Southgate.

"I have to accept things are false about me, but I'm not prepared for that to happen to my coaching team. That is not the reason Ben is not with us,” added the English gaffer.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez returns to England squad after three years; Ben White asks to be left out

Arsenal&nbsp;matched their biggest Premier League away win with a 6-0 pummelling of Sheffield United on Monday after scoring five times in the first half when they tore the home side apart and have closed within two points of leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta's team are third with 61 points after 27 games, a point behind Manchester City but with a much better goal difference than their title rivals. The Blades remain rooted to the bottom on 13 points, 11 adrift of the safety zone.

The Gunners are the first Premier league team with seven wins in a row this season and appear to be gaining momentum at just the right time to keep the pressure on the top two.

"A great performance and a big result for us again with the amount of goals we scored and the clean sheet," said delighted&nbsp;Arsenal&nbsp;manager Mikel Arteta.

"The team shows signs of wanting more, very positive. The energy is really good at the moment. When you are winning everything is easier, we have to maintain momentum now."

Arsenal&nbsp;were ruthless as they sliced through United's defence with ease from the start. Captain Martin Odegaard opened the floodgates with his fifth-minute goal, firing home from the middle of the box after a cute cutback from Declan Rice.

There was more misery to come for United goalkeeper Ivo Grbic on a night that saw six different names on the scoresheet.

Jayden Bogle put through his own goal in the 13th before Gabriel Martinelli struck two minutes later, sending scores of weary United fans to the Bramall Lane exits, while Kai Havertz (25th minute), Rice (39), and Ben White (58) also netted.

"We won 6-0 today and recently we've won a lot, but the work we do without the ball from the front to the goalkeeper is really good and it's a pleasure to be a part of," said Odegaard.

EARLY FIREWORKS

Arsenal's early fireworks had the 9-0 Premier League scoring record looking in jeopardy, but Blades fans were spared more misery partly due to Arteta's substitutions including forward Bukayo Saka heading to the bench after an excellent 45 minutes.

Arsenal&nbsp;were denied a seventh goal thanks to an excellent save from Grbic who batted away a curling shot from substitute Gabriel Jesus that looked destined for the far corner.

They matched their best Premier League away win set in the 6-0 rout of West Ham United on Feb. 11 and record six-goal away victory margin in a 7-1 top flight win over Aston Villa in 1935.

The Gunners did make history on Monday though by becoming the first English side to win three consecutive away matches by a margin of five or more goals.

They also became only the second English team to score at least five goals in three successive top flight away matches after Burnley in September 1961.

United have lost their last four games at Bramall Lane in all competitions having conceded 21 goals and scored two.

Coach Chris Wilder said it had been a painful season for his "damaged group of players. They've had to take some big hits.

"(Arsenal) cut us wide open, they are doing that to a lot of teams, I'm not saying that makes us feel better because that is another long night for this club.

Arsenal matched their biggest Premier League away win with a 6-0 pummelling of Sheffield United on Monday after scoring five times in the first half when they tore the home side apart and have closed within two points of leaders Liverpool. "A great performance and a big result for us again with the amount of goals we scored and the clean sheet," said delighted Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. "The team shows signs of wanting more, very positive. The energy is really good at the moment. When you are winning everything is easier, we have to maintain momentum now." Arsenal were ruthless as they sliced through United's defence with ease from the start. EARLY FIREWORKS Arsenal's early fireworks had the 9-0 Premier League scoring record looking in jeopardy, but Blades fans were spared more misery partly due to Arteta's substitutions including forward Bukayo Saka heading to the bench after an excellent 45 minutes. Arsenal were denied a seventh goal thanks to an excellent save from Grbic who batted away a curling shot from substitute Gabriel Jesus that looked destined for the far corner. Manchester United legend Garry Neville has described Chelsea as "blue billion-pound bottlejobs" after their latest cup defeat on Sunday (Feb 25). Playing at Wembley Stadium, Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost 1-0 in the final after Virgil van Dijk scored a 118th-minute winner for Liverpool. After the match, Neville took a dig at Chelsea and their spending having spent more than 1 billion dollars on player transfers in the last two years.

"In extra-time, it's been Klopp's kids against the blue, billion-pound bottlejobs," said Neville.

After a string of controversial decisions in the match, it was the Reds who came out on top condemning Chelsea to their sixth consecutive domestic cup defeat on Sunday. The defeat means Chelsea will either have to win the FA Cup or somehow manage to finish in the top six of the Premier League to earn a ticket to European football next season.

“For Chelsea, I have no sympathy for them whatsoever. Mauricio Pochettino's players have shrunk. They have shrunk right in front of our eyes and in front of their fans."

The West London outfit are currently 11th in the Premier League standings and will need a remarkable performance in the final few weeks of the season to at least guarantee a seventh-place finish. However, Chelsea’s best chance of reaching European football next season will be to win the FA Cup where they are still going strong.

'Blue, billion-pound bottle jobs': Man Utd legend Garry Neville blasts Chelsea after cup defeat to Liverpool

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso will be a hot managerial property during the European summer after impressing with the German side during the 2023-24 season. Alonso, in charge of Bayer, has led them to the top of the Bundesliga standings despite the one-sided domination of Bayern Munich in the German league for the last decade. With vacancies at Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, the Spaniard has attracted interest from big giant clubs. However, the former World Cup winner insists he is not paying attention to such links and is focused on the Leverkusen job.

"Maybe you have questions about my future," said Alonso before his side's game against Mainz on Friday.

"I have nothing new to say about that. I wanted to say that in advance.

"Right now I'm the coach here, that's for sure. For the future I have nothing new to say, we'll see,' he further added.

Alonso’s stocks were once again inflated on Wednesday (Feb 21) when Bayern decided to part ways with coach Thomas Tuchel. The sudden departure after a poor run of form has sparked rumours of a potential takeover from Alonso at Bayern having also played for the club in his playing days.

Apart from Bayern, Liverpool remain the most interested club in Alonso’s services with links again stretching back to playing days. Alonso famously won the Champions League with the Reds in 2005, scoring in the final. Current Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is on his way out of the club, ending his almost nine-year association with the club.

Apart from Liverpool and Bayern, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona are also keeping tabs on the manager. However, neither is likely to get the services of Alonso for several reasons which makes him property at Liverpool and Bayern.

Real Madrid are unlikely to part ways with Carlo Ancelotti unless there is a serious collapse while connections with the Los Blancos during playing days see him as an unpopular choice at Barcelona. Manchester United’s season is getting back on track and a Champions League spot next season could earn current boss Erik ten Hag a reprieve.

'I have nothing new to say': Xabi Alonso avoids speaking on Bayern Munich, Liverpool links

Liverpool will have a task in hand on Sunday (Feb 25) when they take on Chelsea in the final of the League Cup at the Wembley Stadium. The Reds having emerged victorious 4-1 in both&nbsp;their last two Premier League outings have been troubled with injuries as key men Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah are facing a race against time to make the Starting XI. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp though is optimistic about the inclusion of the duo with the final taking place in three days.

The Reds have been in impressive form in recent weeks despite losing to Arsenal in North London a fortnight ago. Liverpool beat Brentford 4-1 over the weekend and followed that with another win on Wednesday against Luton by the same scoreline. However, the win against Brentford came at a cost with Nunez and Salah both suffering injury scares.

Nunez was substituted at half time while Salah came on in the second half of the match where he scored his 15th Premier League goal. Klopp will be optimistic on the inclusion of the duo despite him claiming they could have played on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp optimistic on Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez's inclusion in League Cup final vs Chelsea

Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo scored two minutes apart in the second half to open the floodgates as an injury-bitten Liverpool opened some space at the top of the Premier League with a 4-1 comeback victory over Luton Town at Anfield on Wednesday.

Juergen Klopp's team have 60 points after 26 games, four points above Manchester City and five clear of Arsenal, although both chasing teams have a game in hand. Luton Town remained in 18th. "Exceptional game," Klopp said. "I liked lots of the first half, but I saw that the boys and crowd didn't like it as much. "I told the boys it was a top game and we have to be calmer in decisive moments, then there were fireworks and wonderful goals -- fantastic night and it is just really good."

Luton's Chiedozie Ogbene shocked the Anfield faithful with a goal in the 12th minute and Liverpool, who were missing several key players including Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez, trailed at halftime of a home league game for the first time this season.

"We made them angry, didn't we?" said Luton manager Rob Edwards. "The second half we just saw Anfield, full-throttle. We saw Liverpool. They suffocated us and their fans were amazing."

Liverpool's patched up side came out after the break in top gear. Van Dijk scored in the 56th minute, shaking off a defender to head in a corner from Alexis Mac Allister and Gakpo headed in what Klopp called "a grenade" from Mac Allister's pinpoint cross two minutes later.

Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott added to Liverpool's lead in the 71st and 90th minutes. "We are a resilient team and we want to fight for one another. It's a hectic season," Elliott told Sky Sports. "For the lads that are injured we wish them well and we want to come back quickly."

The hosts had 29 shots, 13 of them on target, and a Liverpool goal felt inevitable as Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski made a string of big saves from shots by Conor Bradley, Gakpo and Van Dijk within a few minutes before Van Dijk finally connected. "The final bit wasn't really there in the first half," Elliott said. "But football is a game of two halves and in the second half we showed it. Liverpool have been hit by recent injuries -- terrible timing with the League Cup final against Chelsea looming on Sunday and amid a tight title race. The leaders were already missing goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai and Thiago Alcantara among others. The battle to avoid relegation is also fierce with Luton level on points with 17th-placed Everton.

Premier League: Liverpool injury crisis deepens with Jota out for months, confirms Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has signalled his potential successor at the club after he hinted at Xabi Alonso potentially taking over at the club next summer. Alonso, currently in his second season with German side Bayer Leverkusen, has been linked with Liverpool manager role after Klopp decided to step down from his role at the end of the season. Ahead of the Brentford Test, Klopp has shown his support for Alonso, stating he has a long way to go in club management.

<h2>Klopp hints at Alonso </h2>

"If you would have asked me eight weeks ago about Xabi Alonso, I would have gone 'Oh my God!' Always what I said, the dinosaurs if you want, Ancelotti (Carlo), Mourinho (Jose), Guardiola (Pep), maybe me, we will not do it okay, maybe Mourinho - but all the rest will not do it for the next 20 years.

"The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is a standout in that department... Former world-class player, from a coaching family as well which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing. The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional."

With Klopp set to depart, the management at Liverpool are on the hunt for a new manager for the 2024-25 season. While experienced names are also on the radar of the hierarchy of Liverpool, it is expected that Alonso will be the favourite to take over having represented the club during their playing days.

In terms of management, Alonso is enjoying a stellar run with Leverkusen as they are unbeaten in 31 matches in all competitions this season. The Spaniard’s side is currently five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and will look to end the season with their maiden title in the German top flight.

Liverpool are all set for a crunch showdown in the Premier League title race as they enter the Premier League weekend with 54 points in 24 matches. The Reds could open a five-point gap at the top with a win, however, if results go against them they could also slip third in the Premier League standings.

Klopp hints at Alonso "If you would have asked me eight weeks ago about Xabi Alonso, I would have gone 'Oh my God!' Always what I said, the dinosaurs if you want, Ancelotti (Carlo), Mourinho (Jose), Guardiola (Pep), maybe me, we will not do it okay, maybe Mourinho - but all the rest will not do it for the next 20 years. "The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is a standout in that department... Former world-class player, from a coaching family as well which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing. The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional." Southampton book FA Cup tie against Liverpool with win over Watford

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has called for calm surrounding speculation over a number of the club's star players following the news he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have 18 months left to run on their contracts and captain Van Dijk raised alarm bells when the Dutchman said he was "curious which direction the club will go" once Klopp leaves.

"It's completely normal," said Klopp at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's Premier League clash against Chelsea. "A week ago no one knew about my situation. There was still 18 months on their contracts and no one asked, so give us a break. No one has to worry."

"Write what you want, the club is stable. Everything will be fine, I'm 100 per cent sure. I would recommend to stay calm. Very often the fans' concerns are not as big as you might think. You underestimate the intelligence of our supporters."

Klopp revealed on Friday that he had told the club two months ago of his plans to leave but that it would have been a show of bad faith to try and tie players down to longer deals before announcing the news publicly.

"You cannot work like that, especially not with the relationship we have. There is enough time to do everything," he added.

"These players love to be here, I know that for a fact, don't forget that. It is not that they have one foot out. They want to know a little bit of perspective but that will happen, especially behind the scenes."

Liverpool could give Klopp an unforgettable send off as they lead the Premier League by five points and are still in the running for trophies in the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.

But Klopp insisted there was no rush Salah back from a hamstring injury he suffered with Egpyt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

"There was no pressure on him other than wanting to get fit as quickly as possible anyway. But we don't rush," said Klopp. "You do what you can do and, whilst that happens, we have to wait. Mo’s not ready for this game or the next. He’s injured and a muscle injury takes time."

‘It’s completely normal’ - Jurgen Klopp on ‘dressing room environment’ following his shock exit call

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he will "sleep a bit better" after his "biggest rival" Jurgen Klopp rocked the football world with his shock decision to leave Liverpool at the end of this season.

Klopp stunned Premier League leaders Liverpool on Friday when he revealed he will step down once the current campaign is over.

The Reds boss has been Guardiola's main competitor for domestic silverware during their time in England.

While Guardiola has largely come out on top in the trophy stakes during City's dynastic era, the Spaniard is well aware of the threat posed by Klopp and his team.

Paying tribute to the German after City's 1-0 win at Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday, Guardiola said: "He's an absolutely incredible manager, I don't know him closely but I think he's an incredible person as well.

"I have the feeling that when he leaves at the end of the season, part of us at Manchester City is leaving too. They have been our biggest rival, Liverpool in the last years."

Klopp said he was leaving Liverpool because he no longer has the energy required to manage such a high-profile club after nine years at Anfield.

Although the two have never been close friends during their spell in England, their mutual respect is clear.

Guardiola, 53, can empathise with the 56-year-old over his decision after he walked out on Barcelona for similar reasons in 2012.

"All the managers will (feel tired) when you've done many years, I feel it completely. I felt it at Barcelona so I understand it completely," he said.

Although City have won the last three Premier League titles, their reign is under threat from Klopp again this term.

Liverpool currently sit five points clear of second placed City, who have a game in hand.

The prospect of eventually playing a Liverpool team not managed by Klopp -- one of the few coaches who can match Guardiola's intense competitiveness -- is a pleasant thought for the City boss.

Their last showdown in the Premier League will come on March 9 when City visit Anfield for a crucial clash in the title race.

"He's been my biggest rival so I think he will be missed," he said.

"I am a little bit pleased because without him I will sleep a little bit better the night before we play against Liverpool but I wish him all the best. He doesn't admit but he will be back."

"I will leave the club at the end of the season," Klopp said in an emotional video posted by Liverpool on Friday.

Premier League: Jurgen Klopp announces surprise Liverpool departure after nine successful seasons

Liverpool&nbsp;moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 4-0 demolition of Bournemouth that extended their unbeaten league run to 14 games on Sunday. The visitors were frustrated in a cagey first half of few goal-scoring chances but found a higher gear after the break with Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota both scoring twice.

Nunez made it 1-0 in the 49th minute after a slick passing move carved up Bournemouth's defence and the influential Jota put the game out of reach of the hosts with two clinical finishes in the 70th and 79th minutes. Uruguayan Nunez put the seal on a dominant&nbsp;Liverpool&nbsp;display with his second goal in stoppage time.

Liverpool&nbsp;have 48 points from 21 games with champions Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa on 43 points. City do have a game in hand of Juergen Klopp's side. Bournemouth are in 12th place with 25 points. Klopp admitted he was not happy with what he witnessed in the first half but was delighted that even without absent leading scorer Mohamed Salah his side showed they have plenty of firepower.

"We were not flexible enough in the first half and it was not a good game and I told them at halftime it was not great," Klopp told Sky Sports. "In the second half we changed formation and were all of a sudden much more fluent. We scored the goal and then everything looked different. It's great for Darwin and great for Diogo."

Bournemouth's Justin Kluivert was involved in the main first-half action, getting away with a heavy tackle on Luis Diaz and then almost creating a goal for the hosts. Liverpool&nbsp;switched Nunez to a more central role after the break and it soon paid dividends. Curtis Jones laid off a long pass to Jota who then picked out Nunez with a first-time pass and the finish was never in doubt.

Jota made it 2-0 when he was picked out by Cody Gakpo and the Portuguese struck again with another cool finish after miss-kicking his initial shot after being set up by Premier League debutant Conor Bradley who got his chance in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Joe Gomez provided the assist for Nunez's volleyed second goal in stoppage time, meaning Nunez is the first player to 10 goals and 10 assists for a Premier League club in all competitions this season.

Premier League: Liverpool thrash Bournemouth 4-0 to go five points clear

Liverpool survived an Arsenal barrage to claim a place in the FA Cup fourth round in dramatic fashion as a pair of late goals sealed a 2-0 win on Sunday.

While Kevin De Bruyne's long-awaited return for Manchester City in the holders' 5-0 rout of Huddersfield was a memorable moment on Sunday, it was Liverpool's victory in the blockbuster third round clash at the Emirates Stadium that stole the spotlight.

Jurgen Klopp's side rode their luck for long spells as Arsenal wasted a series of chances before Polish defender Jakub Kiwior headed Trent Alexander-Arnold's free-kick into his own net with 10 minutes left.

Luis Diaz wrapped up the smash and grab raid in stoppage-time.

Liverpool's first FA Cup win over Arsenal since the 2001 final was a significant moment as the Premier League leaders inflicted a psychological blow on one of their main title rivals.

Arsenal have now won only once in their last six games in all competitions, an unexpected stumble that leaves them out of the FA Cup and League Cup and five points behind Liverpool in the title race.

No wonder Klopp celebrated with such gusto at the final whistle, pumping his fists in acknowledgement of a victory that could springboard Liverpool's bid to win four trophies.

"In the end we came through. I'm really happy we could win this game. Arsenal could have won it without a doubt. We finished it off and it spoke for the character of the boys," Klopp said.

The Reds, who drew 1-1 with Arsenal in the Premier League in December, face Fulham in the League Cup semi-final first leg in midweek and are also through to the Europa League last 16.
