Virgil van Dijk has urged Liverpool's players and fans to make Anfield a "horrible" place for opponents during the Premier League title run-in.
Liverpool are 11 points clear of second-placed Arsenal at the top of the table, with 11 games remaining after Sunday's 2-0 win at the home of champions Manchester City.
Arsenal have a game in hand, but Arne Slot's men are galloping towards a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title and have seven of their remaining league matches at Anfield.

Liverpool looked nervous during last week's 2-1 home win against Wolves and have also dropped points recently against Everton and Aston Villa.
"I mentioned it after that (Wolves) game, that obviously it's pretty normal, humans, there could be some anxious feelings kicking in," said Liverpool captain Van Dijk.
"And that could still be the case, but I think it only helps us and them as well to make Anfield horrible for the opponent, like most of the time we have been doing that, and obviously the way we play obviously helps with that as well."
He added, "So let's make sure those seven (home games) are going to be amazing, as loud as possible, and I don't think we have to speak about it, because normally that is the case."
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai gave Liverpool their first top-flight victory at the Etihad for nearly 10 years as they capitalised on Arsenal's defeat by West Ham the previous day.
Liverpool fans chanted "We're going to win the league" in the closing stages of the match, looking forward to celebrating just their second English league title since 1990.
"A couple of days ago there was noise also about other things and it could go the other way," said Van Dijk, who is now preparing for Wednesday's home match against Newcastle.
"Obviously, the result on Saturday and the result (at the Etihad) gives them (the fans) the belief.
"It's down to us to just keep focusing on the game ahead of us. That's what we do and that's what I told the boys as well.
"It's all about recovery now and being ready for Newcastle. It will be a big test again and we need our fans to be in great shape."

Premier League: 'Make Anfield horrible for the opponent,' says Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk to fans

Liverpool's charge towards the Premier League title has slowed ahead of a trip to Manchester City on Sunday, giving Arsenal hope of closing in on the leaders.
The Gunners can move to within five points of the Reds should they see off lowly West Ham at the Emirates.
Behind the top two, the race is on for a place in next season's Champions League.

Only six points separate third-placed Nottingham Forest from Newcastle in seventh before they face off at St James' Park.
AFP Sports looks ahead to the pick of Premier League action this weekend:

Liverpool's title test

Arne Slot's men appeared to be cruising towards a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.
However, two 2-2 draws at Everton and Aston Villa in the past 10 days have brought the title race alive again.
But Manchester City, the dominant force in English football during the last decade, were outclassed by Real Madrid in midweek as they crashed out of the Champions League before the last 16 stage for the first time since the 2012/13 season.
The English champions may also be without Erling Haaland, who did not get off the bench at the Santiago Bernabeu due to injury.
But Pep Guardiola's men showed what they are still capable of in a 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle last week and are in need of points themselves in the top-four race.
"They've had maybe one or two months in the seven or eight years he's (Guardiola) there now that weren't the best, maybe partly because of injuries as well," said Slot.
"Injuries come back, they've signed three or four players, I can see them coming back already if you look at the result against Newcastle."
Arsenal have the chance to up the pressure when they face West Ham 24 hours earlier.
Mikel Arteta's side will be without a recognised striker for the rest of the season but have won 23 points from a possible 27 to remain in the race.
"If we constantly look at Arsenal or what other teams are doing, that would not help us," added Slot.
"We already know how difficult it is to go to the Etihad, so we don't need Arsenal to get involved in that even more."
Chelsea crisis Chelsea need to bounce back quickly if they are to retain hope of Champions League football next season.
The Blues flirted with a title challenge towards the end of 2024 but have won just twice in their last nine league games and crashed out of the FA Cup.
Manager Enzo Maresca said his side's meek 3-0 defeat by Brighton last weekend was the worst performance of his tenure to date, amid concerns star man Cole Palmer could leave without the lure of the Champions League.
Chelsea travel to Aston Villa on Saturday, whose own hopes of a top-four finish are starting to fade.
Unai Emery's men pushed Liverpool all the way in a four-goal thriller on Wednesday but find themselves down in ninth, five points off the top four, due to an inconsistent season.
Nottingham Forest's acid test
Not in their wildest dreams could Nottingham Forest fans have imagined sitting third in the table with just 13 games to go.
However, they face a stern test of their credentials to make it back to European football's elite competition for the first time in 45 years.
Forest visit Newcastle on Sunday before hosting Arsenal and Manchester City in their next two home league games.
Newcastle have suffered back-to-back league defeats either side of their League Cup semi-final heroics against Arsenal, with Magpies manager Eddie Howe annoyed by his side's see-saw form.
"I think we have days where we can look far from the team that we are when we're on it," said Howe. "It's a real frustration for us because to be an elite team, you've got to be consistent."

Premier League: Liverpool face Manchester City as race for top heats up

Liverpool's Premier League title charge was slowed by Aston Villa after a pulsating 2-2 draw on Wednesday left neither side satisfied.
Arne Slot's men open up an eight-point lead at the top of the table over second-placed Arsenal, but the Gunners now have a game in hand over the Reds.
Liverpool led through Mohamed Salah but were also forced to come from behind after Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins swung momentum in Villa's favour.
Trent Alexander-Arnold's deflected shot secured a point for the visitors, but it should have been more as substitute Darwin Nunez missed a glorious chance to snatch victory.
"You can understand there is one person in the dressing room who feels quite down," said Slot on Nunez's late miss.
"If you watch the game back we created far more chances than them, we did everything we needed to do. The only thing that wasn't perfect was conceding from a set-piece."
Villa, though, could also have won it in stoppage time as Morgan Rogers and Donyell Malen went close.
A point does little for Villa's hope of returning to the Champions League next season as they remain in ninth.
"A draw I think is fair for both teams because they had also chances to score," said Villa boss Unai Emery.
Liverpool are now 22 Premier League games unbeaten, but after conceding at the death against local rivals Everton, a second 2-2 draw in eight days offers Arsenal hope in the title race.
Slot's men also face a tough trip to Manchester City on Sunday.
"We're happy where we are," added Slot. "A bit too much now we played games where we deserve more than we got.
"We want to achieve something together this season and we have all the ingredients for it but still 12 games to go."

Liverpool onslaught

Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio were handed their first Villa starts by Emery as he reacted to a disappointing 1-1 draw against 10-man Ipswich on Saturday.
Rashford nearly had a hand in the opening goal but had strayed offside before his cross was turned into his own net by Virgil van Dijk.
Villa were masters of their own downfall when the opener did arrive on 29 minutes.
Andres Garcia's backpass went straight to Diogo Jota, who unselfishly squared for Salah to fire in his 29th goal of the season.
Villa were level within nine minutes as Liverpool failed to properly clear a free-kick into the box and the ball fell kindly to Tielemans, who produced a classy finish on the volley.
Jota should have restored the visitors' advantage immediately when be blazed high and wide with just Emi Martinez to beat.
Instead it was Villa who led at half-time as poor Liverpool defending allowed Watkins a free run to meet Lucas Digne's cross with a header into the far corner.
The Liverpool onslaught followed in the second half to extend Slot's run of never having lost an away Premier League game.
Jota curled a fine effort from the edge of the box off the bar.
Alexander-Arnold was a growing influence on the game when he levelled on the hour mark with the aid of a deflection off Tyrone Mings.
Slot threw on Luis Diaz and Nunez off the bench in search of a winner and one of his substitutes should have delivered a vital three points.
Nunez had an open goal to aim at after being picked out by Dominik Szoboszlai but fired over to the disbelief of his manager.
Martinez then had to rush off his line to deny Nunez another clear run on goal.
Villa, though, had the majority of the chances in a frantic finale.
Jacob Ramsey's strike was ruled out for offside before Rogers and Malen's powerful drives flew just off target.

Premier League: Aston Villa dent Liverpool's title charge with hard-earn draw

James Tarkowski struck in the 98th minute to salvage a 2-2 draw for Everton against Liverpool as four red cards were issued after full-time on a dramatic final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
Liverpool edge seven points clear at the top of the Premier League but were denied a vital win by Tarkowski's blistering strike after Mohamed Salah put Arne Slot's men in front.
Everton's Abdoulaye Doucoure, Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were then sent off as tempers flared at the final whistle on a night Liverpool will come to regret if they do not go on to lift a record-equalling 20th English top flight title.
"Very tough," said Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. "We saw the celebrations they had in the end so we know how much it meant for them but the fact is it was disappointing for us."
Everton are set to move to a new 53,000 capacity stadium in Liverpool's Bramley Moore Dock next season and gave their home since 1892 a night to remember against their local rivals.
"Mental probably sums it up," said Everton boss David Moyes. "A brilliant finish for us, to finish the last Goodison Merseyside derby and score in the last minute is in a way fitting."
Liverpool's quest for a quadruple came unstuck with a shock FA Cup exit to second-tier strugglers Plymouth on Sunday.
Slot made 10 changes as he resorted to his strongest available side with Salah and Van Dijk among those who had been afforded the weekend off.
Everton's own FA Cup exit to Bournemouth on Saturday had punctured some of their momentum since Moyes' return for a second spell in charge.
The Toffees had won their previous three Premier League games to pull nine points clear of the relegation zone and got off to a flying start.
Liverpool were caught napping on 11 minutes by a quick free-kick by Jarrad Branthwaite to free Beto, who beat Alisson Becker for his third goal in two league games.
The visitors could have been swept away in the feverish atmosphere early on but the Reds immediate response was the making of champions.
Alexis Mac Allister started and finished the move as the diminutive Argentine midfielder ghosted into the penalty area to head in Salah's teasing cross.

Salah strikes

Everton then suffered a huge blow as their creative hub Iliman Ndiaye limped off in tears after a long stoppage.
The first half never recovered its flow amid a flurry of fouls and yellow cards as the Premier League fixture with the most red cards in history threatened to boil over once more.
The home crowd briefly erupted once more when Branthwaite fired home only for the celebrations to be cut short by the offside flag.
Slot was growing visibly frustrated with his side's lack of penetration going forward and turned to his bench for an impact with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jones and Darwin Nunez sent on to find a winner.
The changes worked as Salah delivered what looked like a potential title-clinching moment.
Jones and Nunez exchanged a one-two and when the former's shot was blocked by Branthwaite, it fell kindly for Salah to prod in his 27th goal of the season.
Only a brilliant save by Jordan Pickford crucially denied Salah a second late on.
And Everton rallied when Liverpool failed to deal with a hopeful ball into the box and it fell to centre-back Tarkowski to fire into the top corner.
A lengthy VAR check followed for offside and Everton fans had to be cleared off the pitch before the game could restart.
When it did there was more fireworks as Doucoure and Jones were both shown sent off clashing after the Everton midfielder celebrated in front of the travelling Liverpool support.
Slot and Hulshoff also saw reds for taking their protests towards referee Michael Oliver too far after the game.

Premier League: Liverpool held by Everton, four red cards in fiery last Goodison Park derby

Liverpool overturned a first leg deficit to reach the League Cup final with a 4-0 win over Tottenham on Thursday, ramping up the pressure on Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.
Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk were on target for the Reds, who will face Newcastle at Wembley on March 16 for the first silverware of the English season.

Liverpool remain on course for a quadruple in a dream debut season for Arne Slot.
They enjoy a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League, have cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League and visit Championship strugglers Plymouth in the FA cup fourth round on Sunday.
"To reach a final should always be special," said Slot. "It was a very good performance from our side."
Spurs' trophy drought on the other hand goes on. Tottenham last lifted silverware in 2008 and Postecoglou now has one less opportunity to fulfil his promise of winning a trophy in his second season.
There is speculation the Australian could be shown the door if another goes awry away to Aston Villa in the FA Cup at the weekend with Spurs languishing 14th in the Premier League.
"We have given up a good opportunity tonight and we cannot shy away from that," said Postecoglou. "They were by far better team. They were too good for us."
Despite having more glamorous titles to win, Slot showed his desire to make the League Cup his first trophy as Liverpool boss by naming his strongest available team bar the usual rotation in goal for cup competitions as Caoimhin Kelleher replaced Alisson Becker.
New signing Kevin Danso was forced straight in to Tottenham's injury-ravaged defence, while Mathys Tel also made an early debut off the bench after Richarlison hobbled off injured.
Liverpool had scored four in each of the previous two meetings between the sides at Anfield and repeated that feat to make light of their 1-0 first leg defeat in north London last month.

Liverpool onslaught

The home side had taken the first quarter to find their stride but the pressure built after Szoboszlai ran offside before sweeping home Salah's pass.
From the Egyptian's next delivery into the box, Spurs did not escape as Gakpo drilled in first time to move clear as the top scorer in this season's competition with five goals.
Antonin Kinsky kept Salah waiting for his goal with a fine save moments later, but at the other end of the field Richarlison lay prone to leave Postecoglou's team further depleted.
Already without record signing Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert in attacking areas, Tottenham never looked capable of mounting the threat they needed to survive the Liverpool onslaught.
The decisive blow came five minutes into the second half when Kinsky rushed off his line but was beaten to the ball by Darwin Nunez and caught the Uruguayan.

Liverpool remain on course for a quadruple in a dream debut season for Arne Slot including a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League. Sports Football

Also Read: Real Madrid legend Marcelo announces retirement after trophy-laden career Liverpool remain on course for a quadruple in a dream debut season for Arne Slot. They enjoy a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League, have cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League and visit Championship strugglers Plymouth in the FA cup fourth round on Sunday. "To reach a final should always be special," said Slot. "It was a very good performance from our side." Spurs' trophy drought on the other hand goes on. They were too good for us." Despite having more glamorous titles to win, Slot showed his desire to make the League Cup his first trophy as Liverpool boss by naming his strongest available team bar the usual rotation in goal for cup competitions as Caoimhin Kelleher replaced Alisson Becker. Liverpool onslaught The home side had taken the first quarter to find their stride but the pressure built after Szoboszlai ran offside before sweeping home Salah's pass. Salah ruthlessly dispatched the resulting penalty into the top corner for his 26th goal of the season. Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch fired off the post as Liverpool put their foot down to kill the tie off. The killer third goal came 15 minutes from time when Connor Bradley, who excelled in the absence of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, played in Szoboszlai to slot home. Liverpool thrash sorry Tottenham Spurs to reach League Cup Final

Cody Gakpo struck twice as Premier League leaders Liverpool thrashed Ipswich 4-1 to maintain their six-point lead over Arsenal, who survived Myles Lewis-Skelly's controversial red card to snatch a 1-0 win at Wolves on Saturday.
Arne Slot's side cruised to their second successive league victory thanks to a first half goal-spree at Anfield.
Dominik Szoboszlai's 11th-minute opener fizzed past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton from Ibrahima Konate's assist.
Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool's advantage in the 35th minute with a fierce strike for his 23rd goal in all competitions this term.
It was also the Egypt forward's 100th Premier League goal at Anfield.
Gakpo killed off Ipswich before half-time when he bundled home after Walton parried Szoboszlai's shot in the 44th minute.
The Dutch forward netted again in the 66th minute, heading past Walton from Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross.
Jacob Greaves' stoppage-time diving header was little consolation for third-bottom Ipswich, who have conceded 10 goals in their last two league games.
Liverpool's 16th win from 22 league games this season keeps them on course for a first English title since 2020.
The quadruple-chasing Reds have a game in hand on second-placed Arsenal, who left it late before keeping the pressure on the leaders.
Arsenal, without ill captain Martin Odegaard, had Lewis-Skelly contentiously sent off for tripping Matt Doherty to stop a Wolves counter-attack in the 43rd minute.
It was a cynical challenge but Arsenal were furious, protesting that the tackle was too far from goal to warrant a red card.
The Premier League Match Centre confirmed on social media that the 18-year-old defender was sent off for "serious foul play".
But Wolves were also reduced t0 10 men in the 70th minute when Joao Gomes earned a second booking for a foul on Jurrien Timber.
And Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori won it for Arsenal in the 74th minute with a half-volley that went in off the far post.

Premier League: Cody Gakpo stars as Liverpool rout Ipswich, Arsenal survive red card drama to beat Wolves

Darwin Nunez struck twice in the final minutes as Liverpool got their Premier League title charge back on track with a dramatic 2-0 win against Brentford on Saturday.
Arne Slot's side were in danger of enduring a third successive league draw after wasting a host of chances at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Of all the candidates to end Liverpool's wobble, Uruguay striker Nunez would have been low down the list given his struggles over the last two seasons.
But he rode to Liverpool's rescue with a stoppage-time brace that lifted the Reds' seven points clear of second-placed Arsenal.
The Gunners can close the gap back to four points with a win against Aston Villa in Saturday's late game.
But Liverpool will hold a game in hand on Arsenal and have the destiny of the title still firmly in their grasp thanks to the much-maligned Nunez.
Slot had admitted he couldn't find a way to get the best out of the former Benfica star earlier this week.
The 25-year-old had scored just four goals in 26 games in all competitions prior to his unexpected double in west London.
Slot will gratefully take Nunez's contribution as Liverpool's first win in three league games kept them on course for a first title since 2020.
Since the turn of the year, Liverpool had only won one game in four in all competitions, beating minnows Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup third round.
They had drawn their previous two league games against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, while also losing 1-0 at Tottenham in the League Cup semi-final first leg, making this victory essential to steady their nerves.
Brentford kicked off with the joint-best home record in the Premier League, an impressive statistic they underlined by scoring twice in the closing stages to draw 2-2 with Manchester City on Tuesday.

Nunez late show

Thomas Frank's side should have had Liverpool on the ropes when Mikkel Damsgaard failed to convert Mads Roerslev's ball across the six-yard box.
Brentford threatened again as Bryan Mbeumo forced Alisson Becker into action with a drive from the edge of the area.
Luis Diaz glanced wide from Ibrahima Konate's pass before Ryan Gravenberch's long-range blast was tipped away by Mark Flekken.
Konate shot wastefully wide and Brentford captain Christian Norgaard headed over as chances kept coming at both ends.
Liverpool had been denied three points at Forest by Matz Sels' superb saves and they were being frustrated by another in-form 'keeper, with Flekken saving well from Dominik Szoboszlai's low shot.
Szoboszlai was inches away from breaking the deadlock when the Liverpool midfielder slammed a 25-yard strike against the bar.
Cody Gakpo should have done better than poke narrowly wide from Salah's pass after Liverpool carved open the Brentford rearguard.
Early in the second half, Salah's shot deflected off Keane Lewis-Potter and was heading towards goal until Nathan Collins made a last-ditch clearance off the line.
Slot sent on Andrew Robertson and Nunez, who immediately headed wide from the Scot's cross to the visible dismay of his manager.
Alisson saved twice in quick succession from Mbeumo's free-kick and the Brentford forward's follow-up effort.

Liverpool's shot tally had reached 34 without a goal and they were nearly punished for their profligacy when Mbeumo's header was saved by Alisson.
As the seconds ticked away, Liverpool grew more desperate and Trent Alexander-Arnold's 30-yard rocket did nothing to ease their angst as it fizzed just wide.
But their pressure was finally rewarded in stoppage-time as Alexander-Arnold's cross picked out Nunez and he kept his cool to slot home from close range.
Slot danced a jubilant jig on the touchline and the Dutchman was celebrating again moments later as Harvey Elliott's pass found Nunez inside the area and he lashed a blistering finish past Flekken.

Chris Wood fired Forest in front early on at a raucous City Ground, but Liverpool dominated almost the entire 97 minutes and got back on level terms thanks to substitute Diogo Jota's goal with his first touch.
Only a brilliant goalkeeping performance from Matz Sels denied the leaders victory, but the point maintained a six-point cushion over Forest for Arne Slot's men, who also have a game in hand.
Forest had won their last seven games in all competitions to raise the possibility of matching Leicester's incredible title win of 2015/16.
The in-form Wood had the home fans believing after just eight minutes when he slotted in Anthony Elanga's pass.
Liverpool enjoyed over 70 percent possession and had 23 shots on goal but only posed a serious threat in front of goal after the break.
Jota had only been on the field a matter of seconds when he nodded in Kostas Tsimikas' corner.
Sels then made incredible saves to deny Jota, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo a winner, while Salah also had a goalbound effort cleared off the line.
"I could not have asked for more," said Slot. "Second half was outstanding.
"There are not many teams that can create so many chances against an opponent so defensively strong. Unfortunately we couldn't get a second."
Liverpool's second consecutive league draw opens the door for Arsenal to cut the gap at the top to four points when they host Tottenham in the north London derby on Wednesday.

Man City, Chelsea stumble

Any suggestion City could get themselves back in the title race was ended in a late collapse in west London as Brentford struck twice in the final 10 minutes for a deserved point.
Phil Foden's double had City on course for a fourth consecutive win after a run of just one victory in 13 games.
However, the English champions' defending was not convincing all night and they were punished as Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard netted for the Bees.
Foden's return to the form that saw him crowned Premier League player of the year last season was the one positive for City.
But Pep Guardiola will reflect on a missed opportunity to make up ground on the top four as City remain down in sixth, 12 points off the top.
Foden produced a brilliant deft touch from Kevin De Bruyne's inviting delivery and then smashed in a rebound for his fourth goal in five league games.
Brentford wasted a host of chances before conceding but finally got some reward for their attacking endeavour when Wissa slotted in from Mads Roerslev's cross to become the club's all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League.
They completed the comeback in stoppage time when Norgaard's header had too much power for Stefan Ortega.
"We are not (at our best) and we didn't take the right decisions," said Guardiola. "It's fine, it's not a good place to come. Unfortunately, we couldn't win."
Fourth-placed Chelsea's miserable run extended to five league games without a win but they were grateful for captain Reece James' stoppage-time equaliser salvaging a point in a 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth.
Cole Palmer's cool finish from Nicolas Jackson's through ball had given Chelsea the perfect start.
But Bournemouth hit back through Justin Kluivert's penalty, before Antoine Semenyo's blistering near-post effort put the visitors in front.
James has endured another injury-hit season but showed his quality by curling home a free-kick at the death.
West Ham boss Graham Potter enjoyed a winning home debut as Fulham were beaten 3-2 at the London Stadium.
Carlos Soler, Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta were on target for the Hammers to take Potter's men above Manchester United and Tottenham into 12th.

Premier League: Liverpool frustrated by Forest, Man City blow late lead at Brentford

London, United Kingdom: Liverpool boss Arne Slot slammed the controversial decision not to send off Tottenham's Lucas Bergvall before the teenager sealed a 1-0 win in the League Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday. Slot was furious that Bergvall avoided a second booking after tripping Kostas Tsimikas with a sliding tackle.
Tsimikas was forced off the pitch following the challenge but referee Stuart Attwell opted to give Liverpool the chance to counter-attack. When Liverpool lost possession just seconds later, Tottenham took advantage by breaking into the space vacated by Tsimikas to score the 86th minute winner.
Dominic Solanke's pass was converted by Bergvall for the 18-year-old's first Tottenham goal. But fuming Slot said: "The decision made had a lot of impact on the result tonight.

"The fourth official told me why he thought it wasn't a second yellow and he heard that probably from the referee. "What we can say about it is that he said he didn't stop the counter-attack, every manager would say they prefer the second yellow than a free-kick. "Spurs weren't happy with a few decisions that happened (against Newcastle) on Sunday. Maybe today a decision went in favour of them, which is of course very unlucky for us."

It was a cathartic victory for Postecoglou, who has been under fire from frustrated fans throughout a turbulent season. Injury-hit Tottenham are languishing in 12th place in the Premier League amid criticism of the Australian's overly-attacking tactics.
Postecoglou, who saw his injury problems mount when Rodrigo Bentancur was taken to hospital with a head injury suffered in the first half, admitted it was a relief to see his side overcome adversity for a change. "Very proud. We had to deal with some adversity again. We started well and then lost Rodrigo, in the way it happened with quite distressing scenes when he went down in that manner. We had to compose ourselves," he said.
Postecoglou's claim earlier this season that he always wins a trophy in his second campaign with a club has been used to ridicule the former Celtic boss as Tottenham's struggles increased.
But he is convinced Tottenham are heading in the right direction as he tries to bring the club their first silverware since the 2008 League Cup. "People can keep mocking me about it but we will see," he said. "We haven't achieved anything yet, just that feeling of getting a result in a big game against arguably the best team in the world right now."

On Bentancur's first half injury, which needed nine minutes of treatment including an oxygen mask on the pitch, Postecoglou added: "He was conscious when he got to the dressing room. "My understanding is it was a head injury. It was worrying and always a concern but from what I know hopefully he will be OK."
Liverpool's first defeat in 24 games in all competitions was only their second loss since Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp in the close-season. The Premier League leaders have gone two matches without a win after Sunday's disappointing 2-2 draw with lowly Manchester United.
But Slot, whose team won 6-3 at Tottenham in the league in December, isn't overly concerned, with Liverpool having the chance to overturn the deficit in the second leg at Anfield on February 6. "The good thing for us is if you ever lose a game it's best in a tie with a second leg. It's still far from ideal for us," he said. "If you compare it to the 6-3, we won't reach that level in every game. You could expect a reaction from Tottenham."

Football, Sports | League Cup: Arne Slot fumes after Tottenham Hotspur teenager Lucas Bergvall avoids red card to sink Liverpool 1-0 in semifinal first leg

Also read: Spanish Super Cup: Barcelona defeat Athletic Bilbao without Dani Olmo to reach final "The fourth official told me why he thought it wasn't a second yellow and he heard that probably from the referee. "What we can say about it is that he said he didn't stop the counter-attack, every manager would say they prefer the second yellow than a free-kick. "Spurs weren't happy with a few decisions that happened (against Newcastle) on Sunday. Maybe today a decision went in favour of them, which is of course very unlucky for us." Inevitably, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou saw the incident differently. Asked if Bergvall was lucky to avoid a red card, Postecoglou said: "Great question, no he wasn't. Slot left fuming after Spurs teen Bergvall avoids red card to sink Liverpool

Lucas Bergvall condemned Liverpool to only their second defeat this season as the teenager's late strike earned Tottenham a controversial 1-0 win in the League Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday.
Bergvall struck with just four minutes left in north London, but Liverpool boss Arne Slot was furious that the Swede was still on the pitch to score his first goal for Tottenham.
Already on a yellow card, the 18-year-old had escaped a second booking moments earlier after tripping Kostas Tsimikas.
Tsimikas was out of position after the tackle when Bergvall scored from an attack that started on the left flank vacated by the Liverpool defender.
Tottenham's victory was a welcome tonic for Rodrigo Bentancur, who was taken to hospital after suffering a worrying injury.
Bentancur stooped to head a corner in the seventh minute and stayed on the ground after falling unchallenged.
His team-mates showed immediate concern and play was stopped as Bentancur received medical attention for nine minutes.
The 27-year-old was given oxygen through a mask during the treatment as a hush fell on the capacity crowd.
At half-time, Tottenham moved to ease fears over Uruguay star Bentancur, who only recently returned from a seven-game ban for using a racial slur about team-mate Son Heung-min.
"We can confirm Rodrigo is conscious, talking and will go to hospital for further checks," the club said in a statement on X during the half-time interval.
Responding to criticism of Tottenham's spluttering form and his attacking tactics, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou claimed earlier this term that he always wins a trophy in his second season.
The under-fire Australian could do with backing up that boast given Tottenham's poor form in the Premier League.
Tottenham last won a trophy when they lifted the League Cup in 2008 and the competition is shaping up as an opportunity to end that long silverware drought.
Liverpool won the League Cup last season in what proved to be Jurgen Klopp's last trophy.
Slot has taken Liverpool to the top of the Premier League and the Champions League since replacing Klopp, making this a rare flop from the Reds under the Dutchman.

Slot frustrated

It was Liverpool's first defeat in 24 games in all competitions since a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in the league in September.
That was the only other loss endured by Slot this season and, following Sunday's disappointing 2-2 draw with lowly Manchester United, he is facing the first test of his prolonged honeymoon period on Merseyside.
The second leg at Anfield on February 6 will decide who advances to the final.
Newcastle won 2-0 at Arsenal in the first leg of the other semi-final on Tuesday.
Postecoglou had handed a debut to goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who replaced injured duo Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster after signing from Slavia Prague in a £12 million ($14 million) deal at the weekend.
With Liverpool well below their best, the 21-year-old Czech wasn't forced into action until late in the first half when he held on to Alexis Mac Allister's header.
Slot grew frustrated with Liverpool's miscues, gesticulating at his backroom staff after Cody Gakpo's shot was saved by Kinsky.
There was more angst for Slot when keeper Alisson Becker turned an ambitious turn inside his own area, allowing Bergvall to steal possession and start an attack that ended with Pedro Porro chipping just wide.
Slot sent on Trent Alexander-Arnold and he almost made an instant impact with a shot that was cleared off the line by Radu Dragusin.
Darwin Nunez, another of Slot's substitutes, was denied by a fine save from Kinsky.
Bergvall escaped a red card before snatching his priceless winner in the 86th minute.
Dominic Solanke showed impressive strength and determination to hold off Ibrahima Konate, laying a pass into the path of Bergvall, who slammed low past Alisson.
Kinsky made a superb stop to repel Nunez's agile back-flick in stoppage-time as Postecoglou finally enjoyed a night to savour.

Mohamed Salah hints at Liverpool exit, says 'my last year at the club'

London, United Kingdom: Rampant Liverpool smashed West Ham 5-0 on Sunday to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points as Manchester City returned to winning ways at troubled Leicester.
Nottingham Forest climbed to second in the table with a fifth straight win at Everton while Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham conceded late to draw 2-2 against Vitor Pereira's rejuvenated Wolves.
Arne Slot's Liverpool look unstoppable in their quest for a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title, recording their 23rd win in 27 matches in all competitions this season.
Luis Diaz opened the scoring against Julen Lopetegui's hapless team on the half-hour, before Mohamed Salah set up Cody Gakpo for the second with some audacious footwork.
The Egypt international then scored his 20th goal of the season shortly before half-time to put the visitors in total control.
Trent Alexander-Arnold made it 4-0 with a deflected shot from distance in the 54th minute and Diogo Jota completed the rout, courtesy of another Salah assist following a surging run.
"I enjoyed it a lot because it doesn't happen many times that I could just sit back and enjoy," said Slot, flying in his first season in the Anfield hotseat after replacing Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool's striking success has come against the background of mounting speculation over the futures of Salah, Alexander-Arnold and captain Virgil van Dijk.
All three can discuss a move to a foreign club on a free transfer from January 1 but remain focused on winning a second Premier League title together.
"The only thing on my mind is I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be part of that," Salah told Sky Sports.
"I will do my best for the team to win the trophy. There are a few other teams catching up with us and we need to stay focused and humble."

Earlier, defending champions City travelled to relegation-threatened Leicester drained of confidence after just one win in all competitions since late October. Their frailties over the past two months, which resulted in nine defeats in their previous 13 games, were on display again.
But Savinho's first-half goal and an Erling Haaland header after the break made it 2-0. City's bid for a fifth straight title looks to be over as they are 14 points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
But the result lifts them to fifth in the table and within striking distance of fourth-placed Chelsea.
"It is not enjoyable right now, it is just relief. We have done incredible things for many years," said City boss Pep Guardiola.
"Our mood is in a better position. It was tight in the second half, they were much better.
"We don't have energy to sustain 90 minutes. Hopefully the new year can help us bounce back."
Nuno Espirito Santo's Forest beat Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park, leapfrogging Chelsea and Arsenal.
Chris Wood chipped over Jordan Pickford for the opening goal in the 15th minute after being set up by Anthony Elanga.
Wood turned provider for Forest's second, which came just after the hour mark when Morgan Gibbs-White produced some neat footwork before firing home.
Injury-hit Spurs were on track to end a torrid December on a high after first-half goals by Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson cancelled out Hwang Hee-chan's brilliant opener for Wolves.
Tottenham captain Son Heung-min also squandered a 43rd-minute penalty, but it did not appear to be too costly until substitute Jorgen Strand Larsen smashed home in the 87th minute.
"I'm the person in charge, so of course it hurts," said Postecoglou, whose team have won just one of their past seven Premier League matches.
"When I see how hard they are trying, it hurts even more because you want them to get a reward and I think today they deserved a reward for their efforts."
Crystal Palace won just their second home league game of the season, seeing off bottom club Southampton 2-1, thanks to goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Eberechi Eze.
Dango Ouattara scored an 89th-minute leveller as Bournemouth drew 2-2 at Fulham.
Chelsea and Manchester United are in action on Monday, with Arsenal travelling to Brentford on Wednesday.

Premier League: Liverpool thrash West Ham to go eight points clear at the top

London, United Kingdom
Christmas Premier League chart-toppers Liverpool are overwhelming favourites to see off struggling Leicester on Boxing Day (Thursday).
Meanwhile both crisis-hit Manchester clubs will seek a festive fillip, with faltering champions City at home to Wolves and United away to Wolves.
Second-placed Chelsea host Fulham while in-form Arsenal will fancy their chances against relegation-threatened Ipswich on Friday, even without the injured Bukayo Saka.
Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham, licking their wounds after a brutal 6-3 hammering by Liverpool, face a tough assignment at high-flying Nottingham Forest.
AFP Sport picks out some of the major talking points in the run-up to one of the busiest points of the English football season.

Liverpool top of the tree

Liverpool are top the table on Christmas Day for the first time since the 2020/21 season and will want to make it count.
Just once in the past seven top-flight campaigns in which they have sat at the summit on December 25, have they gone on to win the title.
Arne Slot's side returned to winning ways in style on Sunday, overwhelming Spurs following two frustrating draws.
They are four points clear of Chelsea with a game in hand. It would be a huge surprise if they slipped up against Leicester at home, especially with Mohamed Salah enjoying a purple patch.
The Egypt international is the first player to reach double figures for both goals (15) and assists (11) before Christmas in the history of the Premier League.
Leicester won their first match under new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy earlier this month but have collected just a single point in their past three matches, conceding nine goals.
The leaky Foxes have not won at Anfield since 2000 and are just two points clear of the drop zone after returning to the top flight this season.

Saka blow forces Arsenal rethink

A buoyant Mikel Arteta said the Premier League title race was "on" after Arsenal swept Crystal Palace aside 5-1 on Saturday.
But one dark cloud was Saka limping off at Selhurst Park, with the England winger set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
It is a blow for Arteta, depriving him of his most potent attacking weapon -- Saka has scored nine goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions this season -- just as Arsenal are finding their form again.
"It's going to be a really good exercise for all of us to think about ways to overcome another challenge, because we've already had a lot in the season," said Arsenal boss Arteta, whose team are third in the Premier League table.
Arteta has a number of attacking options, with Gabriel Martinelli a candidate to fill the void, but Saka, 23, offers something unique.

Virgil van Dijk says there is "no deadline" regarding his contract situation as the clock ticks down to the end of his Liverpool deal.
The Netherlands international's current contract expires at the end of the season and from January 1, he will be able to negotiate with overseas clubs.

However, it is understood that the 33-year-old's preference is to stay at Anfield.
"There is no deadline at all. We will see what the future brings. Is there an update? No," he told reporters.
Van Dijk is one of three key players whose deals are entering their final six months, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah the others.
Salah moved fourth on Liverpool's all-time list of scorers with 229 goals after his two strikes in their 6-3 hammering of Tottenham on Sunday.
The Egypt international has 18 goals so far this season, including 15 in the Premier League, and also has 15 assists.
Salah scored 44 goals in all competitions during his debut season for Liverpool in 2017/18.
Van Dijk hopes the 32-year-old forward can go on to have his best campaign for the club, who are four points clear at the top of the Premier League.
"The numbers speak for themselves," he said.
"He's a very special athlete. He's done amazingly for the club, and hopefully he can play his best season ever for the club, stay important with his goals and assists, and be clinical.
"He is a professional. We've been there, he's been there, so onto the next (game). And next season? I don't know."

'There is no deadline,' says Virgil van Dijk on future at Liverpool

London, United Kingdom
Liverpool swept four points clear at the top of the Premier League as Mohamed Salah's masterclass inspired a memorable 6-3 rout of Tottenham, while Manchester United crashed to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth on Sunday. Salah delivered a sublime performance featuring two goals and a pair of assists as Arne Slot's side ran riot in north London. The 32-year-old is now Liverpool's fourth top scorer ever with 229 goals.
Salah's brace took him past Billy Liddell, with only Ian Rush (346), Roger Hunt (285) and Gordon Hodgson (241) ahead of him. The rampant Reds have won 21 of their 25 matches in all competitions under Slot and have a game in hand on Chelsea to strengthen their lead in the title race.
This was a remarkable display of Liverpool's firepower as Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister scored to put them in command. Dominik Szoboszlai grabbed Liverpool's third and Egypt star Salah took over after the break before Diaz netted again.
"For 60 minutes we did everything we had to do, we were comfortable and good with the ball. The main thing is we worked very hard," Slot said. "But you have to be on top of your game for the whole game and we didn't do that."
Punished for Ange Postecoglou's insistence on sticking to his high defensive line, it was the first time since 1997 that Tottenham had conceded six goals in a home league game.

James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke scored for Tottenham, but an eighth league defeat this season leaves them languishing in 11th place as the pressure mounts on Postecoglou. "If you want to discount the fact we're missing a goalkeeper, two centre-backs and a left-back and that hasn't coincided with how we're doing... I don't know what to say anymore," Postecoglou said of his critics.
United boss Ruben Amorim, who once again left Marcus Rashford out of his squad, is set for a miserable Christmas following the worst result of his brief reign. Languishing in 13th place, United have suffered four defeats in nine matches in all competitions since Amorim arrived from Sporting Lisbon in November to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag.
United's second successive loss after their League Cup exit at Tottenham on Thursday underlined Amorim's belief that their road back to the top will be long and arduous.

Premier League: Toppers Liverpool thrash Tottenham Hotspur 6-3

Liverpool, United Kingdom
Arne Slot says he is not surprised that Liverpool are flying on all fronts just months after he replaced Jurgen Klopp as he prepares to rest some stars for their League Cup quarter-final against Southampton. The Reds are top of the Premier League and the Champions League, with 19 wins in 23 games in all competitions so far. Slot said at Tuesday's pre-match press conference that it was "normal for Liverpool to be fighting for every trophy and to be for a long time in every cup".
"This happened last season when this club won this competition," he said. "So I am not surprised that with the quality we have we are competing at this moment for these three trophies, and the fourth one (the FA Cup) is starting in January."
The Dutch manager, short of fit defenders, is set to rotate his players for Wednesday's tie as he plans for a trip to Tottenham in the Premier League at the weekend. He does not expect forward Diogo Jota, who scored as a substitute on his return from injury against Fulham, will be fit enough to start but Federico Chiesa could get some minutes for the first time since September.

Caoimhin Kelleher will be back in goal, having recently impressed while deputising for Alisson Becker during his lay-off, and defender Kostas Tsimikas is nearing a return. "I'm aware of the fact that we have only four defenders available and probably the ones that have started a lot of times will not play 90 minutes for sure and maybe not even at all," said Slot. "So it's going to be either academy players that are going to get playing time or it's going to be players that nobody would expect to see in the last line that are going to play in the last line tomorrow."
Slot must sit in the stands for Wednesday's match on the south coast after collecting a third booking of the season against Fulham. The former Feyenoord boss is calmer on the sidelines than the expressive Klopp but he admitted he has "fire" inside him.
"I don't always think you have to show it to have that fire," he said. "I think it's clear that if you work at a club like this or around the world at a top club you do have this fire inside you that you want to win every game."

Manchester United scored two late goals on Sunday to deepen the pain for beleaguered Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as Chelsea moved just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. Elsewhere on a day of high drama in the English top flight, Wolves manager Gary O'Neil and Southampton boss Russell Martin were both sacked, paying the price for their teams' struggles.

In the marquee game of the day at the Etihad, City defender Josko Gvardiol opened the scoring but Bruno Fernandes levelled from the penalty spot in the 88th minute and Amad Diallo struck two minutes later to seal a 2-1 win. Defending champions City -- who have dominated English football over the past decade -- now have just one win in 11 games in all competitions and Guardiola is desperately searching for answers.

"I don't have a defence, I'm the boss, I'm the manager. I have to find a solution and I don't find a solution," said the Catalan after the low-quality encounter. "This is a big club, when you lose eight out of 11, something wrong is happening. What can I say? The schedule is tough, the injured players? No. "I'm the boss, I'm the manager and I'm not good enough. It's as simple as that."

Guardiola's men trail leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand, by nine points and sit outside the Champions League places, in fifth spot. Injury-ravaged City were far from their best at the Etihad but appeared to be on course for a vital win as the clock ticked down against their neighbours before they self-imploded.

Diallo and the Portuguese midfielder cut out Matheus Nunes' sloppy back pass then chopped down the United winger in his attempt to make amends. Fernandes coolly converted from the penalty spot to equalise. Diallo then raced onto a simple long ball over the top of City's flat-footed defence, finishing neatly to complete a remarkable turnaround.

The win is a huge relief for new United boss Ruben Amorim, who had won just one of his first four Premier League matches. "I think for the fans it has a deep meaning, especially in this context, in this moment," the former Sporting Lisbon boss said after his first experience of a Manchester derby. "We had a difficult moment one week ago against Nottingham (Forest) at home with a storm. It was a really tough moment after the game. Today, we are more happy, but it's three points that we have to continue."

United finished the day 13th in the Premier League table -- where they started -- after Tottenham hammered bottom club Southampton 5-0.

Enzo Maresca's high-flying Chelsea beat Brentford 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to close to within two points of long-time leaders Liverpool, who have 36 points. The home team dominated the first half and got the reward they deserved shortly before the break when Marc Cucurella nodded home Noni Madueke's cross.

Nicolas Jackson doubled Chelsea's lead in the 80th minute and they held out for the win despite a late strike from prolific Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. It is a fifth straight win for Chelsea, who look increasingly like being Liverpool's main challengers this season, with Arsenal and City faltering.

But Maresca is still being coy over his side's title chances. "It's not about how many games we win," he said. "It's about being realistic. There are things we have to do better. That's why I said for me we are not ready."

Tottenham's romp on the south coast was the latest chapter in a topsy-turvy season for Ange Postecoglou's men, who have now won seven and lost seven of their 16 top-flight matches. James Maddison opened the scoring in 36 seconds and further goals followed for Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Sarr in a staggering 25-minute spell.

England midfielder Maddison grabbed a second goal deep into first-half stoppage time to make it 5-0 but there were no additions in the second half.

Shortly after the match Southampton issued a statement saying they had made the "difficult decision to part ways" with Martin with the club rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, nine points from safety.

Wolves, also in the relegation zone, fired O'Neil after a fourth straight defeat. In the early kick-off, Ismaila Sarr scored twice as Crystal Palace moved four points clear of the relegation zone following a 3-1 victory at Brighton.

Liverpool were rocked in the 11th minute as Fulham midfielder Andreas Pereira met Antonee Robinson's cross with an agile volley that deflected in off Robertson.

The Reds suffered another blow when Scotland left-back Robertson was sent off in the 17th minute for a professional foul on Harry Wilson.

But Slot's men have made a habit of coming from behind this season and Cody Gakpo equalised in the 47th minute with a stooping header from Mohamed Salah's cross.

The Dutch forward's ninth goal in all competitions this season was the prelude to a period of sustained Liverpool pressure.

But Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz delivered a sucker punch as he bundled over the line from Robinson's cross in the 76th minute.

That set the stage for a dramatic finale as Jota levelled in the 86th minute with a cool finish past Bernd Leno from the edge of the area. "I don't think I could have asked for more from my players, especially after going down to 10 men," Slot said. "It's an emotional game. It's good to see our performance after so many setbacks." Arsenal failed to take advantage of Liverpool's rare stumble as the Gunners were kept at bay on a frustrating afternoon at the Emirates Stadium. ALSO READ | Ligue 1: PSG coach Luis Enrique insists having 'my best' season Lack of firepower The north Londoners have become a force from set-pieces, scoring 23 goals from corners since the start of last season. But their lack of firepower outside of that route has been questioned this season and once again they were hampered by a failure to turn pressure and possession into goals. After a second successive league draw, third-placed Arsenal remain six points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand on last season's runners-up. "We fully deserved to win the game," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said. "It's Frustrating, especially when we concede zero chances and dominate the game so much." Newcastle handed Ruud van Nistelrooy his first defeat as Leicester boss with a 4-0 rout at St James' Park. Former Manchester United striker Van Nistelrooy had taken four points from his first two games since replacing the sacked Steve Cooper. But Newcastle ended that encouraging start as Jacob Murphy struck in the 30th minute and Bruno Guimaraes nodded the second goal in the 47th minute. Alexander Isak bagged the Magpies' third two minutes later and Murphy netted again on the hour to leave Leicester two points above the relegation zone. Jack Taylor's stoppage-time goal gave Ipswich a priceless 2-1 win over relegation rivals Wolves at Molineux. Kieran McKenna's team went ahead through Matt Doherty's 15th-minute own goal. Just as Wolves fans were calling for owners Fosun to sell the club, Matheus Cunha grabbed a 72nd-minute equaliser. But Taylor headed home from a 94th-minute corner to seal Ipswich's second league win since their promotion to the top tier. Third-bottom Ipswich are just one point adrift of safety, while second-bottom Wolves are three points behind them after an 11th loss in 16 league games piled further pressure on boss Gary O'Neil. Arne Slot insisted Darwin Nunez is still an important part of Liverpool's plans despite the struggling striker falling below the "standard" in the Champions League win against Girona. Mired in a lengthy slump, Nunez has scored only one goal in his last 10 appearances and three in total all season. In Liverpool's victory in Girona on Tuesday, the Uruguay international cut an increasingly frustrated figure after missing several chances.

Slot admitted he kept Nunez on for an extended period, before eventually replacing him in the 71st minute, in the hope he would score a confidence-boosting goal. After receiving criticism in midweek, Nunez posted on Instagram: "They are not all, they are some. Thank you Reds for your support, we are all still together."

Slot believes the 25-year-old needs the support of fans and his team-mates to help him rediscover the form that made him such a sensation at Benfica prior to his move to Anfield in 2022.

"All our players feel the support of our fans but he is definitely one of them. Mo (Salah) is scoring so many goals he likes the support of the fans but doesn't really need it at the moment," Slot told reporters on Friday. "We all saw they did something with him when he missed a few chances on Tuesday and everyone needs an arm around you, either from a team-mate, the fans or your manager.

"But I also made it clear to him that he is not only judged on the goals he scores, he is also judged on the team performance and he adds something to the team performance as well with his work-rate and how much he does winning the ball back high up the pitch."

- 'Disappointed' -

Slot's only issue with Nunez was a dip in his work-rate against Girona that drew a rebuke from the Reds boss. "Ideally he would have scored a few goals more. But what should always be there is work-rate and I think that is what he has, apart from two games," Slot said.

I said that to him yesterday and the last half-hour against Girona wasn't of the standard he should have. "That had a lot to do with him being disappointed at missing a few chances."

Nunez's position will come under increasing pressure with Diogo Jota and long-term absentee Federico Chiesa set to return to the squad for the visit of Fulham on Saturday.

Chiesa has played for just 18 minutes in the Premier League since joining Liverpool from Juventus in the close-season. The Italy forward has only three appearances in all competitions for the Reds, who sit four points clear at the top of the Premier League as they chase a first title since 2020.

"Federico missed quite a lot for a long time, was ill last week, so we have to wait and see how he is exactly doing," Slot said. "But maybe Diogo is in the squad and maybe Federico as well, but that depends a bit on the numbers we have and also how he recovered from his illness."

Champions League: Real Madrid down Atalanta in key clash, Mohamed Salah keeps Liverpool perfect

Liverpool's Premier League lead was cut to seven points by Arsenal and Chelsea after the Reds conceded a 90th-minute equaliser in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Newcastle on Wednesday.

Chelsea thrashed 10-man Southampton 5-1 to go second on goal difference ahead of Arsenal, who beat Manchester United 2-0.

Manchester City snapped their seven-game winless run by beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 to go fourth.

Mohamed Salah's second-half double was not enough to extend Liverpool's seven-game winning run in all competitions as they failed to win for just the third time in 21 games under Arne Slot.

Twice the league leaders were forced to come from behind at St James' Park as Alexander Isak blasted Newcastle into a 1-0 half-time lead.

Curtis Jones levelled before Anthony Gordon restored Newcastle's lead.

Salah twice converted Trent Alexander-Arnold assists to turn the game around, taking his tally for the season to 15 goals.

However, there was a late sting in the tale as a rare error from Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher allowed Fabian Schar to squeeze in a late equaliser for the Magpies.

"He has done remarkably well for us and even today he was good. Unfortunately, he misjudged the situation," Liverpool boss Slot said of Kelleher's blunder.

Arsenal take advantage

Arsenal took full advantage by inflicting Ruben Amorim's first defeat as Manchester United boss.

Once again the Gunners were able to rely on their prowess from set-pieces to get the job done.

Jurrien Timber broke the deadlock, heading in Declan Rice's corner nine minutes into the second half.

William Saliba did not know much about the second, as he diverted in Thomas Partey's header from Bukayo Saka's corner, but the Frenchman did not care as Arsenal had the breathing space they craved.

A fourth consecutive win in all competitions confirmed Arsenal's return to form and applied a little pressure on Liverpool.

"A special day. It's a joy to play in this stadium with that energy, it's something incredible," Arteta said.

"We scored two set-pieces, but we could've scored from open play many more."

Amorim added: "The set-pieces killed the game. They can put a lot of players near the goalkeeper and it's almost impossible to fight for the ball.

"We already know we have to be better."

Chelsea put bottom-of-the-table Southampton to the sword at St Mary's even before the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Jack Stephens pulled Marc Cucurella's hair.

Axel Disasi's early opener for the Blues was cancelled out by Joe Aribo.

But Christopher Nkunku pounced on sloppy Southampton passing from the back to make it 2-1 before Noni Madueke added a third.

Stephens then saw red in a bizarre incident as he jostled with Cucurella from a Saints corner.

Cole Palmer made sure he got in on the act with Chelsea's fourth before Jadon Sancho's first goal since his loan move from Manchester United rounded off the scoring.

De Bruyne eases Man City crisis

City bounced back from their barren run thanks to Kevin De Bruyne's return to the starting line-up for the first time in nearly three months.

The Belgian teed up Bernardo Silva for the opening goal before firing in the second himself.

Jeremy Doku sealed a much-needed three points for Pep Guardiola's men, who are now nine off the top.

"Definitely we needed that after many games without winning," Guardiola said.

"Kevin De Bruyne was excellent. When he's fit he's so important for us. It's just one game but it was important to break this run."

Aston Villa ended their eight-game run without a win with a dominant first-half display to beat Brentford 3-1.

Morgan Rogers' wonder strike, Ollie Watkins' penalty and Matty Cash's effort made it 3-0 inside 34 minutes before Brentford's Mikkel Damsgaard got one back.

Everton thrashed Wolves 4-0 thanks to two Craig Dawson own goals in a huge clash at the bottom of the table.

Ashley Young and Orel Mangala put the Toffees 2-0 up at half-time, before Dawson's goals twice rubbed salt in Wolves' wounds after the break.

Victory lifts Everton five points clear of the relegation zone, while Wolves sink to 19th.

Premier League: 'As football players...,' Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool players ready to 'go to war'

Liverpool are the only team with a perfect record in this season's Champions League after beating title-holders Real Madrid 2-0 in their heavyweight clash on Wednesday, with last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund among the night's other winners. The showdown at Anfield saw Real attempting to extend a run of eight games unbeaten against Liverpool.

However, Arne Slot's Premier League leaders were too strong, with Alexis MacAllister putting them ahead early in the second half. Kylian Mbappe endured a frustrating night and squandered a chance to equalise for Madrid after an hour when his penalty was saved.

Mohamed Salah then missed from the spot at the other end but substitute Cody Gakpo headed in Liverpool's second goal on 76 minutes.

They are the sole side with five wins from five in this new-look Champions League, and are now guaranteed to advance at least to the knockout phase play-offs in February.

Perfect Liverpool on top of Champions League with win over Real Madrid, Dortmund also among winners

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has hit out at Mohamed Salah, calling him "selfish" after the Egyptian forward publicly voiced his frustration over the club's failure to offer him a new contract.

Jamie Carragher Blasts Mohamed Salah Over Contract Drama

Mohamed Salah says he is disappointed by Liverpool's failure to offer him a new contract and believes he is "more out than in" as he nears the end of his existing deal. The 32-year-old, who has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season, is out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. The Egypt international showed his enduring value on Sunday, scoring twice in Liverpool's 3-2 victory at Southampton, which took them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

But his comments after the match suggest Salah, who arrived at Anfield in 2017 and has won the Champions League and Premier League with the club, could leave for free. "We are almost in December, and I haven't received any offers yet to stay in the club," he said. "I'm probably more out than in. You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands."

Salah is one of the three key Liverpool players who will soon be heading into the last six months of their deals, with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also out of contract at the end of the season.

All three will be free to speak to overseas clubs in January if they do not sign an extension before then. Asked if he was disappointed not to have received an offer from Liverpool, Salah added: "Of course, yeah. I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end, it is not in my hands or the fans' hands. Let's wait and see.

"I'm not going to retire soon, so I'm just playing, focusing on the season, and I'm trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well. I'm disappointed, but we will see."
