Liverpool great Steven Gerrard believes the club still need Mohamed Salah as he urged the star forward to "reverse away" from an extraordinary outburst where he accused the faltering Premier League champions of "throwing him under the bus". The Egypt international was omitted from the squad that travelled to Italy for Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League win at Inter Milan following a blistering attack on manager Arne Slot and the club hierarchy after being left on the bench for last weekend's 3-3 draw at Leeds. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher labelled Salah a "disgrace" for his comments but Gerrard urged the player and management to reunite for the good of everyone at Anfield. "He's obviously really upset he's not playing, which I respect," former Liverpool captain Gerrard told TNT Sports. "A couple of lines about throwing people under the bus, wrong. Need to reverse a little bit away from that, to deal with that with the manager." Gerrard added bust-ups between players and management were nothing new. Salah's remarks sparked reports that Liverpool's third-highest goalscorer in history could leave Anfield in January despite signing a lucrative new contract in April. The 33-year-old posted a picture of himself training alone in Liverpool's weights room on Tuesday. Liverpool’s legendary forward, Mohamed Salah, might have already played his last game for the club as his relationship with manager Arne Slot gets from bad to worse. Champions League: Liverpool lose 1-4 to PSV at Anfield, Arsenal end Bayern Munich's unbeaten start

From Anfield to Westminster, two giants of British life are struggling. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party — once commanding a decisive lead — is now seeing record-low approval ratings amid growing voter frustration and a resurgent Reform UK. Meanwhile, Liverpool FC, long a powerhouse of English football, have stumbled dramatically, losing six of their last seven games and sparking questions about strategy, morale, and leadership. This video draws parallels between the political and sporting crises — exploring how leadership fatigue, internal divisions, and public disillusionment have shaken both Starmer’s government and Klopp’s Reds.

Arne Slot urges patience with ‘best striker’ Isak after record Liverpool move

Alexander Isak's move to Liverpool moved a step closer on Saturday (Aug 30) after Newcastle United signed German international striker Nick Woltemade for a club record fee reported to be worth up to £69 million ($93 million). On 16 March 2025, Alexander Isak secured his place in Newcastle United folklore by helping the club win its first major trophy since 1955 and ending a 70-year drought.
What is the reality?
Playing for Liverpool, representing the six-time European and 20-time English champions, is a dream for any professional player. While not many get the opportunity, 25-year-old Isak is one of those players who could be about to pursue his dream. The striker has a release clause in his current Newcastle contract and letting go of an opportunity to play for Liverpool could come back as the biggest regret of his life. Isak has all the qualities to be a success story at Liverpool, having scored 54 Premier League goals and helping the club reach Champions League football on two occasions in the last three seasons. He has been named in the Premier League Team of the Season on each of the last two seasons, underlining his credibility. Considering an opportunity to represent a club of Liverpool’s caliber may not come again, Isak is using all his cards in the arsenal to push for a switch. ALSO READ | Asia Cup 2025, India's Probable Playing XI: Shubman Gill to open, Sanju Samson at No.3; Tilak Varma to miss out
Why are Newcastle blocking Isak’s transfer?
As things stand, Isak’s current contract runs out at the end of the 2027-28 season, meaning he still has three more years remaining on the deal. In this case, the club is pushing its best to keep the Swedish striker. On the other hand, all of Newcastle’s major transfer targets have turned down the opportunity to join the club. This list includes Benjamin Šeško, Hugo Ekitike and other transfer targets. A Champions League and Premier League season without big match winners could affect the club’s chances as well. The club will also look to take advantage of a World Cup year, meaning it will be essential for the player to keep his hopes of playing in FIFA’s biggest tournament. In case he is unable to force a move to Liverpool and Newcastle end up fining the player with a suspension, it could hamper Isak’s chances of playing at the World Cup. However, the opportunity to play for Liverpool and the opportunity to lift a few more trophies will play in the player’s mind. Therefore, a transfer to Liverpool will present an ideal opportunity for Newcastle to inject cash into the club, while the player could also have his dream move.

A £260 million outlay on Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez is far from over, with Isak and Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi linked with moves to Anfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez are among those to have been sold to raise funds, while the club are still reeling from the tragic death of Diogo Jota in a car accident last month. The transition has exposed some teething problems in pre-season as a slick attacking force has been picked off on the counter-attack. Arne Slot, though, is confident his side are ready as they look to defend the title for the first time since 1984. "I think we’ve lost five to six players that played quite a lot of minutes for us last season, and we brought in four new ones, so then it’s normal that there’s a little bit of adaptation," said Slot. “But we are definitely ready for the league to start.” Can Villa, Newcastle rattle 'big six' again? As the Premier League's traditional "big six" of Liverpool, Manchester City, United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have flexed their financial muscle in the transfer market, Villa and Newcastle have been squeezed out. Constrained by the need to meet financial sustainability rules, Villa's only major signing has been Ivorian striker Evann Guessand from Nice. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has had to field constant questioning on the status of Isak, who sat out pre-season preparations in a bid to force through a desired move to Liverpool. The Magpies' attempts to replace the Swede have repeatedly fallen down with Sesko, Mbuemo, Hugo Ekitike, Liam Delap and Joao Pedro among those to opt for moves elsewhere. But both Villa and Newcastle have consistently outperformed some of the "big six" in recent seasons and will be targeting Champions League qualification again this season. Reds legend Ian Rush and Palace chairman Steve Parish laid wreaths on the side of the pitch before kick-off, while the Liverpool end was awash with banners and flags paying tribute to the Portuguese international. A minute's silence, however, had to be cut short due to disturbances in the crowd. Jota's death has dampened the excitement over Liverpool's transfer spending spree to build on a squad that romped to a record-equalling 20th league title last season. All four of their new signings at a cost of £260 million ($350 million) -- Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Frimpong and Milos Kerkez -- started. Ekitike's role this season could depend on whether Liverpool are successful in their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. But the Frenchman -- signed from Eintracht Frankfurt last month for an initial £69 million -- did his case to be Slot's preferred number nine no harm at all. Wirtz also bagged his first assist for the Reds when Ekitike spun onto the German's pass and fired into the far corner after just four minutes. Palace were making their first ever appearance in the fixture but the Eagles again showed their ability to match one of the Premier League's giants over 90 minutes. Mateta missed a glorious chance to level when he failed to beat Alisson Becker when one-on-one. Liverpool unbalanced But from the rebound Sarr charged into the box and was tripped by an out-of-sorts Virgil van Dijk. Mateta coolly sent Alisson the wrong way from the penalty spot to equalise. Liverpool's players were sporting a "Forever 20" emblem, referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number, that they will wear all season. The Liverpool fans had risen to chant Jota's name as the game entered the 20th minute when their side retook the lead. Frimpong's chipped cross caught out Henderson and flew into the far corner. Ekitike wasted a great chance for his second early in the second half from another Wirtz pass as this time he fired over. However, Slot's new-look side are still to find the right balance between attack and defence as has been evidenced during pre-season. Liverpool forward Luis Diaz completed an $88 million switch to German powerhouse and defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on Wednesday (July 30). In an announcement made by the record German champions, Diaz will be the latest addition to the already prolific forward line of the Bavarians, as they try to challenge for European glory. The witch also means Liverpool will have one vacant spot on the team roster as they continue their pursuit of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in the transfer window.

The Reds have already generated $174mn in transfer activity, which could see them lure Isak from Newcastle.

In an announcement made by the record German champions Bayern Munich, Luis Diaz will be the latest addition to the already prolific forward line of the Bavarians, as they try to challenge for European glory.

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz completes Bayern Munich switch in $88mn deal

It was a sorrowful July 2025 for Liverpool and its fans as the month started with the tragic death of star forward Diogo Jota, and the club went into a state of mourning. Still in the grief of Jota’s death, Liverpool have been in a ‘show must go on’ state as they continue to make headlines in the transfer window with the signings of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and now with the potential arrival of Alexander Isak. So are Liverpool the new irresistible force in European football as the defending Premier League champions are set to break the bank yet again?
The irresistible force of Liverpool
Already blessed with a lethal attack, Liverpool’s forward line consists of Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez (unless he leaves) and others. However, adding the attacking talent of Ekitike, Wirtz and Isak, they could have one of the best attacking lines in Europe. Isak has been Newcastle’s best player in the last three seasons, helping the club reach the Champions League on two occasions. While Luis Diaz is on his way out, Ekitike is already a proven talent in his position. The Frenchman has played a huge role in recent years for Eintracht Frankfurt to help them clinch Champions League qualification. He scored 15 goals and assisted eight further goals to help Frankfurt finish third in the Bundesliga. On the other hand, Wirtz has already proven himself in the Bundesliga, playing a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen clinching their maiden Bundesliga title in 2023-24. In Leverkusen’s title-winning season, he bagged 11 goals and 11 assists, while last season he amassed a tally of 10 goals and 12 assists. Isak’s numbers also make for significant reading, bagging impressive numbers with Newcastle United over the last three seasons. In the 2024-25 Premier League season, he scored 23 goals and assisted six goals as Newcastle sealed Champions League qualification for the second time in three seasons. ALSO READ | IND vs ENG, 5th Test: 'Bumrah is fit to bowl as per his workload', says India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak Combining the above trio with the strength of Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s attacking third could be the best in the business. While Manchester City and Real Madrid showed flaws in the final third last season, Liverpool could only get better with every deal done. The Portuguese striker was driving in a Lamborghini through Zamora, Spain when his flat tyre suddenly burst and pushed the car off the road. His 25-year-old brother Andre Silva, who played for Portuguese second-division club Penafiel, was also inside the vehicle when it burst into flames following the collision. Jota is reported to have been behind the wheel at the time, police believe. The sporting community was left stunned following the accident. Thousands honoured the Premier League champion and Andre and extended their sympathies to Rute and the kids. Jota had wed his high school sweetheart just two weeks prior to the deadly crash. Only 20 hours before his death, Diogo and Rute had put up a shared post on social media terming their wedding “a day we will never forget.” In one photo, Rute wrote, “My dream came true” — to which Diogo had replied, “But I’m the lucky one.” The couple met at school as teenagers and had been together for 13 years.
