Switzerland will try a former Gambian minister under ousted dictator Yahya Jammeh for crimes against humanity on Monday in a milestone case where a serial rape victim will testify after a multi-decade wait for justice.

Former interior minister Ousman Sonko will become the highest-ranking official to be tried in Europe under the principle of universal jurisdiction that allows grave crimes to be prosecuted anywhere, said Swiss campaign group TRIAL International which filed the complaint against him.

Nine Gambian plaintiffs will travel to Switzerland for the scheduled Jan. 8-30 trial at the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona in a case rights activists see as ensuring global accountability for the worst atrocities.

Sonko, 54, faces charges including murder, multiple rapes, and torture between 2000-2016 in what is Switzerland's second trial ever for crimes against humanity. He denies the charges.

"It has been a long period of waiting, waiting with anger, anxiety. But I am very optimistic now and I feel so happy. I am smelling justice," said Madi Ceesay, a 67-year-old plaintiff who says he was detained and tortured under Sonko.

The defendant's lawyer Philippe Currat plans to ask the court to abandon the case, citing problems with the investigations and hearings.

"Since the beginning, I have been stupefied by the way this file has been handled," he told Reuters, saying some of the evidence in the indictment was based on "secret" hearings in Gambia and that interviewees had not been informed of their rights.

<h2>'Struggling for 25 years'</h2>

One of the plaintiffs is Binta Jamba who, according to the indictment, was raped multiple times by Sonko between 2000-2002 after he murdered her husband in connection with an alleged planned coup attempt.

Once, in 2005, he held her captive for five days, beating her and raping her repeatedly, the indictment said. She fell pregnant by him twice and he paid for the abortions.

"Me and my family have been struggling with this for almost 25 years now," she said in a message sent to Reuters. "Without justice, I will never have peace in my life."

Currat says he can prove that Sonko was abroad during much of the period of the rape accusations.

He will also argue that many of the alleged crimes against humanity, including the rape charges, happened before a relevant Swiss law took effect in 2011 and are not admissible.

Sonko, 54, was arrested in early 2017 in Switzerland, where he was seeking asylum. Jammeh's 22-year repressive rule ended in January 2017 after he lost an election and was forced to flee.

Sonko could face a life sentence as the maximum possible penalty.

Currat says his treatment in Swiss jails has been cruel and that he was denied food and given inadequate medical care.

Fatoumatta Sandeng, the daughter of Solo Sandeng, a Gambian opposition activist killed in custody in 2016, said she is eager to look into Sonko's eyes in court. "If we don't hold people accountable, things like this will keep happening in Gambia, in Africa, all over the world," she said.

Donald Trump has escaped being removed from the presidential primary ballot of yet another state. Despite requests for his removal, California's Secretary of State, Dr Shirley Weber, has declined to remove the 2024 Presidential hopeful.

According to CBS News, Webber's decision comes despite an open letter by the state's Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, who asked her to explore "every legal option" to remove Trump from the state's 2024 presidential primary ballot.

In response to last week's letter, Webber only said that her decision would be guided by her office's "commitment to and respect for the rule of law."

"Removing a candidate from the ballot under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment is not something my office takes lightly and is not as simple as the requirement that a person be at least 35 years old to be president," she added.

After the two strikes, California's decision comes as a relief for Trump. &nbsp;

Kim lambasted the United States during a lengthy speech at the end of five days of year-end party meetings that set his country's military, political and economic policy decisions for 2024.

The meeting announced plans for further military development in the coming year, including launching three more spy satellites, building unmanned drones and developing electronic warfare capabilities, as well as strengthening nuclear and missile forces, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

This year, Pyongyang successfully launched a reconnaissance satellite, enshrined its status as a nuclear power in its constitution and test-fired the most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in its arsenal.

Kim accused the United States of posing "various forms of military threat" and ordered his armed forces to maintain the "overwhelming war response capability", according to KCNA's account of the meeting that ended on Saturday.

The meeting concluded that it is a "fait accompli that a war may break out on the Korean peninsula any time due to the enemies' reckless moves for invading the DPRK," KCNA said, using the acronym of the North's official name.

In an effort to deter Pyongyang, Washington deployed a nuclear-powered submarine in the South Korean port city of Busan this month and flew its long-range bombers in drills with Seoul and Tokyo.

The North has described the deployment of Washington's strategic weapons, such as B-52 bombers, in joint drills on the Korean peninsula as "intentional nuclear war provocative moves".

In an interview with Daily Mail, attorney Hannah Alexander stated that Tesla's reports to the authorities did not accurately reflect instances of injuries. Alexander, who works with the non-profit Workers Defense Project, cited her conversation with factory workers as proof.

As&nbsp;per Alexander, the under-reporting stretches to a worker's death on September 28, 2021. However, as per a report from the Travis County medical examiner, the worker, a contractor named Antelmo Ramírez, died of heat stroke. "We've had multiple workers who were injured," said Alexander, adding, "and one worker who died, whose injuries or death are not in these reports that Tesla is supposed to be accurately completing and submitting to the county in order to get tax incentives."

Tesla is yet to release a statement on the issue.

Last year, the Workers Defense Project filed a complaint on behalf of workers at Giga Texas&nbsp;with the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). It alleged that Tesla's contractors and subcontractors gave some hires false safety certificates.

As per video footage of the incident — including bystander video — on March 3, 2020, the officers punched 33-year-old Manuel Ellis and put him in a chokehold from behind. They also shot him with a stun gun and knelt on his back, which cut off Ellis' air supply.

Witness testimonies and the videos showed that Ellis was walking home after getting doughnuts from a 7-Eleven when he passed a police patrol car at a red light. Inside the car were Collins and Burbank.

The two officers claim they saw Ellis try to force open the door of a passing car, and that he became aggressive upon questioning. Collins, as per AP, also testified that Manuel Ellis demonstrated "superhuman strength" and&nbsp;lifted him off the ground and threw him through the air.&nbsp;

However, three witnesses testified that they saw no such thing and that Ellis didn't do anything to provoke the officers.&nbsp;

They said that after a brief conversation, the two white officers knocked down Ellis, even as he&nbsp;held up his hand in surrender. However, Burbank still shot him in the chest with a taser. A doorbell surveillance camera corroborated this.&nbsp;

Soon, many officers appeared for backup. Among them was Rankine, who arrived after Ellis was already handcuffed face-down. The officer knelt on Ellis' upper back.

Video evidence showed the victim addressing the officers as 'sir' and telling them he can't breathe. During his testimony, Rankine called the death a tragedy, but said: "The only response at that point that I could think of is, 'If you can talk to me, you can still breathe'".

As per an ET report, the threat actor posting under the alias "Perell" has shared a "sample dataset" on the dark web, which includes sensitive details of BSNL fibre and landline users.

The hacker is said to possess sensitive information, including email addresses, billing details, contact numbers, and other sensitive data. Besides this, information like mobile outage records, network details, completed orders, and customer information etc have also been compromised, reported ET, citing a person with knowledge of the development.

According to the report, the dataset shared by the hacker consists of about 32,000 lines of data. The threat actor 'Perell' however, claimed to possess approximately 2.9 million lines of data, across all databases. This, as per the report, includes information like a BSNL customer's district.

Indian cybersecurity watchdog Cert-In has reportedly been notified of the hacking attack.

While BSNL is yet to publicly acknowledge the breach, speaking to the publication, Kanishk Gaur, cybersecurity expert and founder of India Future Foundation, a think tank working on internet safety and cybersecurity, called the data breach "deeply concerning".

Delhi police have made two new arrests as part of their probe into the December 13 security breach at the Indian Parliament in the national capital.

As per reports, on Wednesday, police picked up an ex-techie and a 50-year-old man from Karnataka's Bagalkot city and Uttar Pradesh's Jalaun district, respectively.

A Times of India (TOI) report identifies the arrested men as a "50-year-old jobless man named Atul Kulshreshtha", and a senior software engineer, Sai Krishna.

As per a PTI news agency report, the two are being questioned over their alleged involvement in the security breach.&nbsp;

Citing sources, the news agency reported&nbsp;that one of them is said to be a close friend of Manoranjan D, one of the two men who disrupted parliament proceedings on the day.&nbsp;It goes on to identify the individual as Sai Krishna.&nbsp;

<h2>A long con</h2>

As per an NDTV report, the computer graduate would prey on grieving families, conning them out of small amounts to avoid triggering suspicions.

The case came to light last month, on November 15, when the Indian capital Delhi's Wazirabad police station received a complaint. A father reported that his daughter had gone missing. A report was registered and the missing child's details were uploaded to the missing portal of the Delhi police.

The family, using a QR code shared with them, transferred the money, awaiting their child's return. However, they never heard back from the man. They filed a complaint which led to the conman being traced. &nbsp;

<h2>The man behind the con &nbsp;</h2>

Identified as Shyamsundar Chauhan from Mau in Uttar Pradesh, the cyber conman is a 28-year-old graduate in Computer Applications.&nbsp;

Preying on distressed families, he would ask for small amounts of money ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹40,000 ($24 to $480). To pick his victims, he would scour police databases on missing people. This includes the ZIPNet (Zonal Integrated Police Network).

Talking to the press, Manoj Kumar Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Delhi revealed that in the last few days they "received multiple written and verbal complaints from parents in the North Delhi district that their missing child had been found, and they had paid money to police personnel, but they got no response after that, or were not reunited with their child."&nbsp;

The Deputy Commissioner said that the accused would often pose as a police officer and ask for money to facilitate the child's travel from another city.&nbsp;

"He would say the child has been recovered and ask for a small sum, saying that the child was in other cities, like Dehradun, and the money was needed to get them back. The parents would transfer the amount. One such incident took place under the Wazirabad police station, where ₹8,000 was taken from a family to get their daughter back."

As per the police, the predatory conman was arrested from Mau, Uttar Pradesh. Their investigation revealed that he had cheated 41 people from North Delhi and 904 people from Delhi-NCR.&nbsp;

An earthquake in Northwest China has claimed at least 116 lives. CCTV footage captured the haunting moment when the earthquake struck and&nbsp;wreaked havoc.&nbsp;The tremor, which was of&nbsp;magnitude 5.9 according to the US Geological Survey, hit Gansu province around midnight.&nbsp;

However, as per Gansu's provincial&nbsp;emergency management department, the earthquake registered a 6.2 magnitude&nbsp;on the Richter scale.

In China's Gansu province, at least 105 were killed and almost 400 were injured, said local officials. As per the state broadcaster CCTV, after the shallow tremor struck around midnight, 11 were killed, while 100 others were injured in the city of Haidong in the neighbouring province of Qinghai.

Hours after the earthquake brought down buildings&nbsp;and left behind a trail of destruction, distressing visuals of the natural disaster are going viral on social media.

CCTV footage from various establishments revealed the spine-chilling moment&nbsp;when buildings shook&nbsp;and possessions tumbled due to the strong earthquake.

Texas magistrate judges are now mandated to instruct migrants to return to Mexico, and those refusing to comply face severe consequences, potentially landing them a two-decade sentence.

While existing federal laws already allow charges for illegal entry or re-entry, Governor Abbott said that President Joe Biden's "deliberate inaction has left Texas to fend for itself." He made the statement&nbsp;during a press conference in Brownsville, Texas.

Ipsos CEO Darrell Bricker notes that the sentiment is not limited to those who never supported Trudeau; even past Liberal voters are expressing the view that his time has come and gone, citing a need for change.

"When you start poking away at it among people who actually say they voted for him or supported him in the past, their view is one or two things. One is his time has come and gone. He’s given a service, and it’s really Canada just needs a change," said Bricker, as quoted by Global News.

"And then there's another group among his supporters that say, not this time, because I don't think he can win, and we need to do whatever we can to stop Pierre Poilievre."

Bricker highlighted that there was a regional unity in the consensus that Trudeau should step down. He said that it extends beyond traditional regions critical of the Liberals to include areas like Ontario and Quebec.&nbsp;

"This time around, it just seems like people are either tired or they don't think he's got what it takes in order to be able to defeat his opponents," Bricker said.

"He felt tremendously guilty about many things he had done in his life, about the killing, about the looting," said Gordon, as quoted by CBS.

Despite portraying himself as a scholar and protector of Cambodia's culture, Douglas Latchford was accused of stealing many artefacts featured in his books.&nbsp;

As per investigators, Latchford sold most of the loot to wealthy collectors, and museums, keeping a few for himself.

"I would say that he was, in many ways, the mastermind behind the greatest art heist in history," remarks Gordon.

Latchford was indicted by US authorities in 2019 for smuggling, conspiracy, and wire fraud, but he died before facing trial. Testimony of former looters found by the investigators proved critical in the case against Latchford.

"It's quite remarkable to have looters actively assisting a team of investigators to recover artifacts that they had a first hand in helping remove from the country," said J P Labbat, who a former special agent with Homeland Security's cultural property, art, and antiquities unit.

Brad Gordon negotiated the return of Latchford's personal collection of stolen treasures with his family. Some other stolen treasures have been returned by museums. However, other stolen Cambodian antiquities, including those at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), are still being sought for repatriation.&nbsp;

The Met recently reached an agreement to voluntarily return 13 artefacts tied to Latchford.&nbsp;

As per Phoeurng Sackona, Cambodia's culture minister, the Met's announcement was a&nbsp;"first step". She looks "forward to the return of many more of our treasures," added Sackona.

Additionally, 33 stolen treasures from the collection of the late billionaire George Lindemann are voluntarily being returned by his family.

More than 30 other sculptures were discovered in 2008 when Architectural Digest published images from the Lindemann mansion. The Lindemann family voluntarily agreed to return the stolen treasures in September.&nbsp;

The artefacts, symbols of Cambodia's gods and ancestors, are on their way home after decades of being displaced, said Gordon. "We feel like the gods have spoken today. They want to come home."
