They end the campaign on 79 points, seven behind champions Atletico Madrid and five off second-placed Real Madrid.

"We didn't do the business in important games this season," matchwinner Griezmann said.

"Of course I'm happy with the goal but still disappointed with how the league campaign has gone. We weren't good at the start of the campaign but we've been almost perfect in 2021.

"I'm happy for Atletico, for (coach) Diego Simeone, Koke, for my friends there and their fans. They deserve it."

Coach Ronald Koeman named a much-changed starting XI, with Lionel Messi, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Jordi Alba and Pedri all absent, and initially it showed in a somewhat disjointed first half.

Defender Oscar Mingueza was required to make a crucial block early on as Sergi Enrich bore down on goal after Frenkie de Jong lost the ball in a dangerous area, in an otherwise uneventful first 45 minutes.

With the game seemingly destined for a draw, it sparked to life in the closing stages.

On 81 minutes Griezmann smashed in from an acute angle following good work from Ousmane Dembele down the right-hand side.

Barca were given a scare four minutes from time when Takashi Inui saw an effort smash back off the crossbar, however the Catalans held out to secure the three points.

Eibar, meanwhile, finish bottom of the table on 30 points and return to the second-tier Segunda after seven years in Spain's top flight.

Football: Griezmann strike secures third place for Barca in La Liga

Atletico Madrid pipped city rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title on Saturday after Luis Suarez fired them to a 2-1 comeback win at Real Valladolid, which secured them the Spanish championship for the first time in seven years.

Valladolid took a shock lead in the 18th minute when Oscar Plano slotted past Jan Oblak to complete a sweeping counterattack after Yannick Carrasco had lost control of the ball following an Atletico corner.

Just as they had done in last week's comeback win over Osasuna, Atletico missed a series of clear opportunities but they drew level after a moment of magic from Angel Correa, who danced his way through the defence before arrowing into the bottom corner in the 57th minute.

Suarez then pounced on a giveaway by the Valladolid defence to score in the 67th and put Atletico on their way to a victory that would secure the title no matter what happened in Real Madrid's game at home to Villarreal.

Valladolid missed a couple of glaring opportunities down the other end while Geoffrey Kondogbia wasted a chance that would have given Atletico a more relaxing finish when he blasted into the side-netting.

Real Madrid ended up fighting their way back from a goal down to beat Villarreal 2-1 which meant they would have swiped the title from Atletico's hands if Valladolid had equalised thanks to a better head-to-head record.

However, Diego Simeone's side saw out the victory and wildly celebrated on the pitch.

"Atletico have had an incredible season despite all the difficulties we've had. We've been the most consistent team and we are champions," said Suarez.

The game was played behind closed doors like all of Atletico's matches this season although several hundred supporters cheered them on from outside the stadium.

Atletico finished top of the standings on 86 points while Real came second on 84. Valladolid finished 19th and were relegated to Spain's second division along with 18th-place Huesca and Eibar, who finished bottom.

SENSATIONAL START

Simeone's side went top in December after a sensational start to the campaign and stayed there despite numerous moments when it looked like their run to the title might fizzle out.

They were beaten at Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao in April and conceded a last-minute penalty away to Elche but got away with a 1-0 victory when Fidel Chaves hit the post.

They left it late to beat Osasuna in last week's penultimate match and lived dangerously against Valladolid, too.

"Our first half of the season wasn't normal and neither was the slump we had," added Suarez, who joined Atletico last year after being forced out by Barcelona.

The Uruguayan, 34, was close to tears after the game and thanked Simeone's side for giving him a chance to keep proving himself at the top level.

"The situation I had to live through was very difficult, I was treated badly. But Atletico opened the door for me to prove I was still good enough," he said.

Simeone added: "To stay top of the league for so long is an enormous achievement. I'm so grateful to the players, especially those who played less, as we had to stay united behind the same objective as a team, and we did that throughout."

La Liga Live Streaming: When and where to watch Atletico Madrid vs Real Valladolid?

Barely a week has gone by this season without Diego Simeone pronouncing his mantra of "one game at a time" and now it really rings true, with Atletico Madrid one match away from winning La Liga.

If they beat Real Valladolid on Saturday, they will be crowned champions for the first time since 2014 and few could argue given they will have been top of the table since December.

But Real Madrid are lurking, only two points behind, and ready to dip their neck over the line at the last moment. They have not led La Liga since October 17.

Real Madrid will have to win at home against Villarreal to have any chance but the omens looks good for Zinedine Zidane's side, given their opponents may not be at full strength.

Villarreal are in a three-way battle to finish fifth and sixth, with the team that comes seventh dropping out of the Europa League and into the new and less lucrative Europa Conference League.

But Villarreal could do even better and qualify for the Champions League if they defeat Manchester United in the Europa League final, four days after their game at Valdebebas.

"We will have an eye on the Manchester United game," said Villarreal coach Unai Emery on Wednesday.

A draw for Atletico could mean the top two are tied on points but that would see the trophy returned to Real Madrid, who would sneak it on head-to-head.

In some ways, Atletico might benefit from the situation being clear. They will almost certainly have win to claim the title and can look for victory from the start.

Valladolid might have been relegated already had results gone against them last weekend but instead they are still fighting to be the one team out of three that survives.

Huesca and Elche are the others scrapping to finish 17th, with both of them two points ahead of Valladolid, the trio sandwiched between already-relegated Eibar and Getafe, who are safe.

It means only a win will give Valladolid hope, a scenario that could play into Atletico's hands if it encourages their opponents to attack, opening the spaces that were denied by the defensive approach of Osasuna, who so nearly spoiled Atletico's chances last weekend.

Luis Suarez's 88th-minute winner, which completed a stunning turnaround after Renan Lodi equalised only six minutes before, had the feeling of a pivotal moment, a dramatic twist to prove decisive in who harnesses the prize.

Yet Real Madrid's priority on Sunday was survival and they beat Athletic Bilbao at San Mames to take Atletico to the last day, when the tension will be at its highest.

Simeone admitted "anxiety exists" among his players but in 10 years in charge he has tried to expunge the fatalist tendencies that haunted the club for so long.

Real Madrid have benefitted before, when Atletico conceded in the 93rd minute in the 2014 Champions League final in Lisbon and lost in extra-time. Atletico went close in the 2016 final in Milan too, only to be beaten by Real Madrid on penalties.

Now Simeone's team are within touching distance again, the difference this time that Real Madrid have no control, their own success now depending on what happens at the Jose Zorrilla stadium, 200 kilometres away.

Win or lose, it could be Zidane's final game in charge and there are serious doubts around the future of Ronald Koeman as well, ahead of Barcelona's last match against Eibar.

Barca's disappointing end to the season means they could even surrender third place if they lose while Sevilla will hope for the chance to overcome a two-point gap when they face Alaves on Sunday.

Real Sociedad in fifth are a point ahead of both Real Betis and Villarreal, the tussle for the Europa League still alive. Betis travel to Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad are at Osasuna.

Elche host Athletic Bilbao and to stay up, they will have to better Huesca's result against Valencia at Mestalla. Valladolid must beat Atletico and hope Elche and Huesca both lose.

Football: Atletico on cusp of La Liga glory but Real Madrid ready to pounce

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has no special plans for Saturday`s La Liga title showdown with Barcelona.

The Argentine`s league leaders visit the Camp Nou two points ahead of the Catalans and a win would all but rule Barca out of the title running with three games remaining.

Real Madrid, who take on fourth-placed Sevilla on Sunday, also sit two points behind Atletico and could be the main beneficiaries if the meeting ends in a stalemate.

Simeone, however, insisted he would not change his usual set-up for a more attacking one.

"We`re playing with a really clear idea this season as you can see," he told a news conference on Friday.

"Sometimes it`s gone really well and sometimes it hasn`t. We don`t change a lot. We`ll try and play using the good points of how we`ve been playing up to now.

"They (Barca) are a side who have won a lot of points on the spin, they play good football and have done a great job in recovering from a slow first half of the season.

"We`ll look to take the game in the direction we want it to go in and play our own game."

Simeone has a fully fit squad, with defenders Jose Maria Gimenez and Renan Lodi returning to full training on Friday.

The Argentine has never won as a coach at the Camp Nou, however he did secure a maiden La Liga victory against Barca earlier this season when the sides met in Madrid.

The same result on Saturday could help to secure a first title for the Rojiblancos since 2014.

'Best player in history': Atletico Madrid midfielder praises Lionel Messi ahead of clash

Atletico Madrid stayed in charge of La Liga's four-way title race by earning a nerve-shredding 1-0 victory at struggling Elche on Saturday, riding their luck to the extreme when the hosts missed a penalty in stoppage time.

Marcos Llorente scored the only goal with a deflected shot in the 23rd minute but gave away the penalty in the 90th after a careless handball as Atleti defended a free kick after sitting on their slim lead rather than looking to put the game to bed.

Elche midfielder Fidel Chaves's spot kick beat goalkeeper Jan Oblak but came off the post, providing another twist in an action-packed game in which Atletico had two goals ruled out for offside and a penalty award taken away following a VAR review.

Fidel's spurned penalty threw Diego Simeone's side a lifeline in the thrilling title race while leaving Elche still 18th and in the relegation zone. They would have moved out of the drop zone if Fidel had scored from the spot.

The win took Atletico to 76 points with four games left but Real Madrid moved two points behind them by beating Osasuna 2-0. Barcelona are third on 71 points and visit Valencia on Sunday. Sevilla, on 70 points, host Athletic Bilbao on Monday.

It was the second time this season Atleti had benefitted from their opponents squandering a late penalty, with Oblak saving from Alaves' Joselu to secure a 1-0 home win in March.

It was also the second stroke of fortune in three days for Atletico, who sank to a chastening 2-1 defeat at Athletic Bilbao last week and looked set to lose top spot to Barca, who then fell to a shock 2-1 loss at home to Granada on Thursday.

Atleti visit Barca next Saturday in what could be a pivotal weekend in the title race, with Real hosting Sevilla the next day.

'AN OBLIGATION'

"Winning today was an obligation and we were able to get the job done," said Llorente.

"At this stage of the season everyone has so much at stake, whether you're fighting relegation, going for Europe or the title. Every team is playing as if their lives depend on it."

Atletico went on the attack early on against Elche and should have taken the lead after a slick move between Angel Correa and Luis Suarez, who could only find the side-netting.

Suarez did manage to put the ball in the net soon after following a move with Llorente but was left frustrated again when the goal was ruled out after a VAR review for a fractional offside.

The Uruguayan missed the target early in the second half and then had a second goal chalked off, this time for a clear offside.

Suarez was replaced by midfielder Saul late on as Simeone sought to protect Atletico's lead.

The move almost backfired when Elche's Antonio Barragan caught sight of goal from close range but volleyed just over the bar.

Fidel's spurned penalty was an even bigger let off but, somehow, Atletico remain in the box seat in the title race.

Llorente added: "I don't believe in luck. But we've got the three points which gives us huge belief for what's left to come."

"At this stage of the season everyone has so much at stake, whether you're fighting relegation, going for Europe or the title. Every team is playing as if their lives depend on it." Atletico went on the attack early on against Elche and should have taken the lead after a slick move between Angel Correa and Luis Suarez, who could only find the side-netting.

La Liga: Atletico Madrid ride luck to win after late Elche penalty miss

Barcelona suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat by Granada on Thursday, conceding two second-half goals to blow the chance of moving top of La Liga.

The result was a body blow for Barca, who had lost just once in their previous 22 league games and no longer have the destiny of the title in their own hands.

"We're really down. We tried until the end but we weren't good enough in the attacking third and they've scored with their two attacks," Barcelona defender Jordi Alba told Movistar.

"It was a unique chance to go top after such a tough year. It's not in our hands but we need to win all the five remaining games and see what happens."

Things started well for the Catalans, who took the lead on 23 minutes after Antoine Griezmann teed up Lionel Messi for his 26th league goal of the season.

The Argentine forward was denied by Granada keeper Aaron Escandell one-on-one shortly afterward, and it proved to be a vital step in the context of the game - as well as the title race.

Darwin Machis leveled the scores on 63 minutes after Oscar Mingueza failed to cut out Luis Suarez's through ball and in the aftermath, Barca coach Ronald Koeman was sent off by referee Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes.

The hosts were stunned 11 minutes from time when substitute Jorge Molina headed in Adrian Marin's pinpoint cross from close range to secure a first-ever away win at Barcelona for Diego Martinez's side.

Barca sits third in the standings on 71 points, two points behind league leaders Atletico Madrid. They trail great rivals Real Madrid, who also have 71, in second place due to their inferior head-to-head record.

Koeman's red card means the Dutchman will likely miss Sunday's trip to former club Valencia, as well as next weekend's title showdown with Atletico.

Barcelona blow the chance to move at the top of La Liga

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone insists his side are not getting carried away with the La Liga title in touching distance.

Atletico had a 10-point lead at the top of the table just two months ago but the chasing pack have closed the gap in recent weeks, with Simeone`s men winning just two of their past five league outings.

However, they were handed a major reprieve on Thursday when Granada beat Barcelona to leave Atletico two points clear at the top of the table on 73.

Only three points separate the top four clubs, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla all in hot pursuit of the leaders.

Atletico know that winning their remaining five games - starting with a visit to Elche on Saturday - will allow the club to lift their first La Liga title since 2014.

However, Simeone said they are not thinking that far ahead.

"You`re just thinking and focusing more than ever on the next game," Simeone told a news conference.

"With four sides so close together I can only think about the next game and put my confidence in the boys who are having a great season.

"There`s always pressure there. If you play after and your rivals have won, there`s pressure - but you can say the same if you`re playing before them. You just need to focus on yourself in these situations.

"It`s something new, but it`s good for Spanish football that there`s four sides battling it out for the title. Each game is more important than the other."

Atleti will be without fullback Renan Lodi, who has a thigh injury. Otherwise Simeone has a fully fit squad to choose from for the trip to third from bottom Elche, who sit just a point from the safety zone as the season reaches its climax.

Atletico Madrid's Simeone not getting carried away with title in sight

History was made during Athletic Club’s Sunday night clash with Atletico de Madrid this weekend. It was Iñaki Williams’ 189th&nbsp;consecutive appearance for the club in LaLiga Santander, moving him into second on the all-time rankings ahead of Real Sociedad legend Luis Arconada. Only Juan Antonio Larrañaga, who played in 202 matches in a row, has a longer streak.

Curiously, Williams’ incredible run actually began against Atlético de Madrid. He returned from an injury to play against&nbsp;Los Colchoneros&nbsp;back in the 2015/16 campaign, on April 20th&nbsp;2016. After playing the final five matches of that season, he played in all 38 of Athletic Club’s games in 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20, as well as the first 32 fixtures of the current campaign. In other words, there hasn’t been an Athletic Club league match that hasn’t featured Williams since a 1-0 win over Malaga all the way back in 2016.

Williams’ story is a unique one. Born in Bilbao to a Ghanaian father and Liberian mother, he grew up in neighbouring Pamplona and started playing for local teams in the area. Since he lived far away from the complex, teammates would take turns bringing him to training and Williams remains grateful for the support he received from those teammates and the various coaches and directors who helped him along the way. He was so talented that Athletic Club took notice while Williams was playing in Pamplona and he was soon incorporated into the club’s Lezama academy.

Playing for the Basque side’s B team, Bilbao Athletic, Williams really stood out and first-team coach Ernesto Valverde was so impressed with what he was seeing that he handed the youngster his first-team debut against Córdoba in December of 2014, aged just 20. A few months later, in February 2015, he netted his first goal for the team by scoring against Torino in the Europa League.

Before long, Williams had become Athletic Club’s talisman in attack, complementing Aritz Aduriz perfectly. By scoring big goals in big moments and by causing problems for opposition defences every time he produced one of his trademark sprints, Williams was key in the various successes enjoyed by Athletic Club over the following seasons.

Williams became so important that he was never dropped. It takes good health and a clean disciplinary record to set a consecutive appearance record like his, but it also requires the unwavering confidence of a coach – or coaches. Over the period of Williams’ 189 LaLiga Santander matches in a row, he has had five coaches and everyone has consistently named him on their team sheets.

In the boardroom, they believe in Williams too and, in 2019, he penned a nine-year contract that will run until 2028, a commitment rarely seen in modern football. No other player in LaLiga Santander has a contract that runs that far into the future, but Williams and Athletic Club are a match made in heaven and they want this special bond to continue.

“I have always said that I am where I want to be,” he stated as he signed his new deal. “It’s a matter or pride for me to be linked with this great club for so many years, a club that has given me everything. Athletic Club always believed in me and this is my home.”

Atletico Madrid's players have expressed their "satisfaction" at the club's decision to withdraw from the European Super League project on Wednesday.

"From the Atletico squad we want to communicate our satisfaction over the final decision to withdraw the commitment to the Super League project taken by our club," a statement by captain Koke said on Twitter.

"We will keep fighting to help from our position so that Atleti grow with the values of effort and sporting merit that have always characterised us, so that all of you continue to feel reflected in that identity. We will continue working hard, focused on the match tomorrow."

Atletico became the lastest club to pull out of the huge controversial competition on Wednesday, with the project on the brink of collapse.&nbsp;

Only Real Madrid and Barcelona officially remain, after England's 'Big Six' teams were the first to quit, before the Italian trio Inter Milan, Juventus and AC Milan followed suit.

Atletico said in a statement earlier on Wednesay the decision to join had been made "in response to circumstances that no longer exist today".

The club added the "first team squad and coach have shown their satisfaction with the club's decision, understanding that sporting merits must prevail over any other criteria."

Atletico were one of three La Liga sides involved in the breakaway tournament, with Real Madrid and their president Florentino Perez at the heart of the project.&nbsp;

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman said in a press conference on Wednesday: "I spoke with the president [Joan Laporta] yesterday and he explained the club's position.&nbsp;

"But a lot has changed since then. It's best not to say much now, no one knows what will happen. There were teams that were in; now they say they don't want to be in. What I want most is the best for this club."

Sevilla came from behind to win 2-1 at Real Sociedad on Sunday and stay in contention for an unlikely La Liga title bid.

The visitors, who won a dramatic match at Celta Vigo 4-3 in their last fixture, fell behind in the fifth minute to a goal from their former forward Carlos Fernandez.

But they responded with two quick-fire strikes by midfielder Fernando and striker Youssef En-Nesyri in the 22nd and 24th minutes to move into the lead.

Brazilian Fernando created the danger for the equaliser and then pounced on a poor clearance from Robin Le Normand to score.

En-Nesyri also showed good anticipation when he put his side in front moments later, following up a deflected shot which came off the post to steer the ball into the unguarded net.

Sevilla comfortably defended their lead in the second half to record a fifth win in six league games which included a 1-0 victory at home to Atletico this month.

Sevilla are fourth in the standings on 64 points after 31 games, three behind leaders Atletico Madrid who host Eibar later on Sunday. Real Madrid are second on 66 after 30 games and Barcelona third on 65 from 30 matches.

Sevilla have not won the Spanish title since 1946 and have not finished in the top two since 1957 but En-Nesyri dared to dream.

"We`ll go all out to win the seven games we have left and try to win La Liga. We`re going to fight for the title," he told reporters.

La Liga: Sevilla stay in title race with comeback win at Sociedad

Real Madrid player Lucas Vazquez will be out of action for the remainder of La Liga after straining knee ligaments during the 2-1 win over Barcelona, his club said on Sunday.

The winger was involved in a rough challenge with Barcelona's Sergio Busquets on Saturday and was substituted. He was Madrid's key right-back this season due to injured Dani Carvajal.

Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid have gone on top of the table after beating their arch-rivals Barcelona. Benzema's superb piece of skill and a deflected Toni Kroos free-kick put Madrid in charge and while Oscar Mingueza pulled one back for Barca, they fell to defeat in what could be Lionel Messi's final appearance in this fixture.

"We're still in it," said Barca coach Ronald Koeman.&nbsp;

"We've lost a game against a team who is also fighting for the league but we have eight-game left and we will fight to the end."

Victory means Real Madrid go level on points with Atletico, with the top three now separated by a single point.&nbsp;

With Atletico stumbling and both Barca and Real Madrid hitting their stride, this game looked set to define, if not the title, then who would become favourites to be crowned champions in May.&nbsp;

La Liga, Real Madrid vs Barcelona: When and where to watch the ElClasico?

Valencia's players walked off during their La Liga game with Cadiz on Sunday in protest against racist abuse, with coach Javi Gracia later claiming they were told they would be punished if they refused to resume the match.

The fixture was stopped in the 37th minute after Valencia said their player Mouctar Diakhaby was the victim of a racial insult.&nbsp;

Diakhaby had been involved in a heated exchange with Cadiz's Juan Cala before indicating to the referee David Medie Jimenez that he was leaving the field.&nbsp;

The Frenchman's team-mates followed him off and Cadiz also went down the tunnel soon after.

Around 15 minutes later, the Valencia team returned and a further five minutes afterwards, the game restarted, this time without Diakhaby.

Diakhaby was replaced by Hugo Guillamon and watched the second half sitting in the stands.

"In the changing rooms we were told if we didn't return, we would be sanctioned," said Gracia, who would not specify who had made the threat.

"In that moment, we spoke with Diakha, about how he was, and he told us that he wouldn't play but he understood perfectly we had to continue playing to avoid a possible sanction, so we returned."

Valencia defender Jose Gaya also told Spanish television after the game: "He (Diakhaby) told us he was insulted in a racist way. We went back out to play because they told us they could penalise us with three points and something more. He asked us to go back, he's gutted, it was a very ugly insult."

Valencia had earlier indicated it was Diakhaby's decision that the team return to the pitch.&nbsp;

<h2>- 'I believe in my player' -</h2>

The club wrote on social media shortly after the game resumed: "The team have held a meeting and decided to continue the game, in order to fight for the honour of the club, but denounce racism of any kind.&nbsp;

"We offer our complete backing to @Diakhaby_5. The player, who had received a racial insult, requested that his teammates return to the pitch. We support you Mouctar."&nbsp;

Cadiz coach Alvaro Cervera said Cala insisted he had not racially insulted Diakhaby.&nbsp;

"We returned to the changing room, we talked," Cervera said.&nbsp;

"Cala said that at no time did he insult the player. I believe in my player."

La Liga would not comment on the incident after the match.

An official complaint from Valencia or mention of the incident in the referee's report could lead to further investigation and sanctions against Cadiz.

President of the Valencian regional government Ximo Puig wrote on Twitter: "Equality and rejection of racism. That is the most important match. A hug to Diakhaby. This is his house, his land."

The exchange occurred after a tussle between Diakhaby and Cala in Valencia's penalty area.

As Cala ran back to his own half, the pair continued to argue, with Diakhaby suddenly sprinting towards Cala, who was standing close to the halfway line.

Several players rushed over to separate them, with Gabriel Paulista among those shouting at the referee.&nbsp;

Diakhaby was visibly distressed and his reaction earned him a yellow card.&nbsp;

After being escorted away, Diakhaby spoke individually with the referee before walking off, together with Gabriel.&nbsp;

The Cadiz players waited a few minutes longer before also leaving the pitch.

The referee was not close to the argument between Diakhaby and Cala, and Gracia said "there was no record from the referee that this had happened".

Cala was then also substituted at half-time, having earlier scored the opening goal for Cadiz, with Kevin Gameiro equalising for Valencia.&nbsp;

Cala's replacement Marcos Lopez scored a late winner to secure a 2-1 victory for Cadiz.

Last month, Athletic Bilbao's Inaki Williams gave evidence in court as part of an investigation into Espanyol fans racially insulting him during a match in January last year.

In December 2019, a second tier game between Rayo Vallecano and Albacete was suspended after Albacete refused to come out for the second half following chants from Rayo fans calling their striker Roman Zozulya a Nazi.

Valencia's players walked off during their La Liga game with Cadiz on Sunday in protest against racist abuse, with coach Javi Gracia later claiming they were told they would be punished if they refused to resume the match. The fixture was stopped in the 37th minute after Valencia said their player Mouctar Diakhaby was the victim of a racial insult. Diakhaby had been involved in a heated exchange with Cadiz's Juan Cala before indicating to the referee David Medie Jimenez that he was leaving the field. "In that moment, we spoke with Diakha, about how he was, and he told us that he wouldn't play but he understood perfectly we had to continue playing to avoid a possible sanction, so we returned." Valencia 'threatened with punishment' for walking off in racism protest

Lionel Messi celebrated becoming Barcelona's highest appearance maker of all time by scoring twice as his rampant side crushed Real Sociedad 6-1 away in La Liga on Sunday with a stunning team display.

Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring by netting against his old club in the 36th minute and right back Sergino Dest stretched Barca's lead shortly before halftime after latching on to a sweeping pass from Messi.

Dest struck again early in the second half before Messi controlled a sumptuous pass from Sergio Busquets and scored to mark a night on which he overtook Xavi Hernandez as Barca's record appearance maker, with 768 games for the club.

Ousmane Dembele struck his side's fifth goal of the night in the 71st minute after a brilliant solo run while Sociedad's Ander Barrenetxea hit arguably the best goal of the game to give his side a rare moment of joy.

Messi, however, had the final say, finishing off a flowing team move in the 89th minute to score his 23rd league goal of the season, increasing his lead at the top of the scoring charts.

The victory took Barca above Real Madrid into second place in the standings on 62 points, four behind leaders Atletico Madrid with 10 games left to play.

"This is a difficult place to come, Barca always used to struggle here but we came flying out of the blocks," said Griezmann.

"We worked very hard, we won the ball lots of times deep in their half and reacted well every time we lost it. It was a great Barcelona performance."

Barca used to dread facing Sociedad away from home, failing to beat them in San Sebastian for more than a decade, and even though they ended up hammering the Basques they did not get off to the best start.

Sociedad forward Alexander Isak should have given the hosts an early lead from close range but could only shoot straight at keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who denied the Swede again moments before Dest doubled Barca's lead.

"This wasn't our best game and they were clearly better than us and overwhelmed us," said Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal.

"They were more ruthless than us; we went into halftime feeling bad as they scored all their chances while we couldn't convert ours and the second half was very different as a result. But no-one likes to lose like that."

FC Barcelona's Gerard Pique sustains knee ligament sprain: Club

Barcelona&nbsp;pulled off a stirring comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit and reach the Copa del Rey final, beating Sevilla 3-0 after extra time in Wednesday's semi-final second leg to go through 3-2 on aggregate.

Danish forward Martin Braithwaite grabbed the decisive goal with a scrappy diving header early in the extra period after Ousmane Dembele had given Barca the lead in the 12th minute and Gerard Pique had levelled the tie deep in added time, moments after Fernando had been sent off for Sevilla.

Sevilla, who won the first leg at home 2-0, deployed uncharacteristically negative tactics yet they wasted a glorious chance to make it 1-1 in the second half and effectively kill the tie when Lucas Ocampos squandered a penalty.

Barca will meet either Levante or Athletic Bilbao in the final in Seville on April 17, looking to lift the Copa del Rey for a record-extending 31st time.

"I haven't been this happy for a long time, it was a magic night," said Barca's Jordi Alba.

"It's just a shame our fans weren't there to see it. We played superbly and we were always convinced we would go through but we couldn't score until the last minute. I'm so proud of the team. We have a lot of things to improve but if we fight like we fought today everything will be easier."

Barca had won 2-0 at Sevilla on Saturday to go second in La Liga, leading their coach Ronald Koeman to declare his side had every chance of turning the tie around.

But their preparations were overshadowed when former President Josep Maria Bartomeu was arrested on Monday and the club's Camp Nou offices were raided in a probe related to allegations of improper management and business corruption.

The club will elect a new leader on Sunday and the three candidates, Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Toni Freixa, were all present in the Presidential box to witness the comeback.

Koeman described the night as his best since he took charge of the team last August and set his sights on lifting his first trophy as Barca coach after plenty of successes as a player under Johan Cruyff.

"We've taken a big step towards winning an important trophy," he said.

"We had to play a complete match and that's what we did. We kept going until the last minute, we got a bit lucky but we always believed in ourselves and we deserve the victory."

Dembele got Barca off to an ideal start with a scorching strike into the top corner from outside the box and they would have scored a second with a deflected effort had Sevilla's Marcos Acuna not cleared the ball off the line.

Barca continued to dominate in the second half and left back Jordi Alba almost levelled when he flew high into the air to meet a cross on the volley and rattle the crossbar.

Sevilla then launched a rare attack and earned a penalty when Ocampos was felled by Oscar Mingueza.

The Argentine, making his comeback from an ankle injury, scuffed his shot, however, and German keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen caught the ball to keep his side in the competition.

Sevilla defended deep for the remainder of the game but could not prevent Pique heading home a Griezmann cross to force extra time and the Catalans had all the momentum plus an additional man to complete a famous win.

Barcelona reach Copa final with epic comeback win over Sevilla

Atletico Madrid bounced back from recent poor form with a hard-fought 2-0 win at Villarreal on Sunday that allowed the La Liga pace-setters to extend their lead to five points.

An own goal from Alfonso Pedraza and Joao Felix's powerful strike gave Atletico a precious win after a wobble which had allowed Barcelona and Real Madrid to gain ground in the title race.

Diego Simeone's side had come into the match off the back of a Champions League last 16 defeat to Chelsea and a league run in which they picked up just five points from their previous four matches.

However despite Villarreal coming close on a number of occasions Atletico held on for a win that ensures they keep second-placed Barca at bay and crucially increase the gap between them and rivals Real Madrid to six points ahead of next weekend's local derby.

Madrid can go back to within three points of Atletico when they host Europe-chasing Real Sociedad on Monday night.

"We suffered, and even after the second goal they had good chances. But we come home with a very important victory at this point in the season," said Simeone.

Atletico opened the scoring thanks to Pedraza's odd own goal mid-way through the first half, which came after long VAR check to see if Stefan Savic, who was initially credited with the goal, had strayed offside for Thomas Lemar's cross.

Savic's header was saved by Sergio Asenjo only for the ball to ricochet off Pedraza and into the net as the 24-year-old defender fell over.

Gerard Moreno should have pulled the hosts level when he met a Daniel Parejo cross but couldn't muster a decisive finish and Savic recovered easily to clear the ball off the line.

<h2>- 'I love rebel players' -</h2>

Suarez could have doubled Atleti's lead eight minutes after the break when he pounced on a defensive lapse to let off a powerful shot, only for Asenjo to pull of a superb reaction save to deny the Uruguayan.

However Joao Felix gave the away side the two-goal cushion they needed in the 69th minute, quickly latching onto a poor clearance by Pau Torres to lash home the second from just outside the penalty area.

Felix appeared to direct an angry look at Simeone after scoring, reportedly prompted by a lack of game time.

"I love rebel players, those that have pride. The goal brought something out in him," Simeone said.

"He needed it, and the team needed that goal."

The hosts responded, with Carlos Bacca somehow shooting wide when Moreno laid on a simple finish for the Colombian with 12 minutes remaining.

And teenage substitute Alex Baena was unlucky to finish the match without his first La Liga goal, first clipping the post in the 82nd minute and then forcing a brilliant save form Jan Oblak with a stinging volley.

However they couldn't recover and sit seventh thanks to a run of seven matches without a win.

Earlier Real Betis moved above Villarreal as they maintained their bid for European football next season thanks to Juanmi's late strike which earned them a 1-0 victory at struggling Cadiz.

Spaniard Juanmi rammed home a close range header with six minutes remaining to squeeze Betis past the home side and put them sixth.

Betis are just two points behind Sociedad in the automatic Europa League qualification spot.

Real Valladolid climbed out of the relegation zone despite extending their winless league run to eight in a 1-1 draw at Celta Vigo.

Valladolid were denied a first league win since January 2 by Jeison Murillo's stoppage time header.

In an intense relegation scrap Valladolid are level on 22 points with Alaves and Eibar, Elche are 19th on 21 points and rock-bottom Huesca have 20.

Atletico hold La Liga rivals at bay with tight Villarreal win

According to 90min, Liverpool and Manchester United are asking to be kept informed of his situation at Sevilla after his impressive performances in La Liga this season, whilst West Ham also reportedly approached the January transfer window.

The Morrocan striker has shown promising signs ever since his arrival in January 2020. Inter are also keeping a close eye on Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, according to a Spanish media report.

Sevilla FC's sporting director Monchi replied to WION's query regarding En-Neysri's transfer rumours during a media interaction, where he said: "Well, we are worried about the present. Barcelona in the league, Barcelona in the cup. But En-Nesiry's performance as a striker is very good and a lot of other clubs are looking at him."&nbsp;

Never worried about selling players: Sevilla's Monchi on La Liga hotshot En-Nesyri's future

Real Madrid will attack Atalanta in Wednesday's Champions League last-16 first leg in Italy and go all out for victory despite missing close to half of their squad due to injury, coach Zinedine Zidane said.

Real are missing nine first-team players including captain Sergio Ramos, record signing Eden Hazard and top scorer Karim Benzema but have managed to overcome their injury problems in recent league matches, winning their last four outings.

"We're focusing on the players we do have available and we're going to prepare the game well and try to win it. We always go out on to the pitch to win, we never accept anything else," Zidane told a news conference on Tuesday.

"We know there's a second leg to come but we're only focused on tomorrow's game. We want to keep up our run of form and we know how difficult the game will be but we're concentrated and committed to putting in a good performance."

Zidane added that there was "no reasonable explanation" for the club's litany of injuries.

"We didn't have a pre-season campaign but neither did anyone else and we have had a lot of absences. But we'll compete with the players we do have and we're ready for the game," he said.

Real Madrid have not got past the Champions League last 16 since winning the competition for a third time in a row in 2018, going out to Ajax Amsterdam in 2019 and Manchester City last year.

Zidane likened Gian Piero Gasperini's Atalanta side to the Ajax team that took the Champions League by storm two years ago, saying they were "a very attacking team, physically strong and who do many things well".

"Gasperini was the Juventus youth coach when I played for them and he has done a great job, I love him as a coach," added the Frenchman.

Real Madrid to go all out for win at Atalanta despite injuries, says Zidane

&nbsp;Lionel Messi scored with two scorching strikes as Barcelona hammered Alaves 5-1 on Saturday in La Liga to warm up for their upcoming Champions League clash with Paris St Germain in style.

Portuguese forward Francisco Trincao put Barca in front after a cut-back from 18-year-old debutant midfielder Ilaix Moriba and Messi thought he had doubled the lead later on when knocking in on the rebound but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside against Antoine Griezmann.

Messi then took matters in to his own hands from outside the area and thumped the ball off the far post with such venom that it landed just inside the opposite post.

Alaves's Luis Rioja pounced on a mistake by Ilaix to reduce the deficit in the second half but Barca came roaring back with a second strike from Trincao, another long-range missile from Messi and then a fifth goal crafted by Messi and Griezmann and finished off by left back Junior Firpo.

A seventh consecutive league win took Barca up to second in the standings on 46 points, eight behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

"Messi is in a fantastic moment of form," said Barca coach Ronald Koeman.

"We know how decisive he is and right now he is in the mood. With him playing in this form, everything is easier. If we want to beat PSG, we need Leo and everyone else at the top of their game."

Barca had suffered a painful 2-0 defeat to Sevilla in Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final first leg and Koeman rotated his side to make for fresher legs for Tuesday's first leg at home to PSG.

He rested Jordi Alba and started without Sergino Dest, Ousmane Dembele and Pedri but there was no rest for Messi, who unleashed a ferocious shot for his first goal.

He also sparked the move for Barca's third goal, racing on to a through ball and attempting to round keeper Fernando Pacheco, who succeeded in snuffing out Messi but could only parry the ball into the path of Trincao, who tucked it into the net.

Messi was hungry for a second goal of his own, however, and got one less than 60 seconds later, dribbling past two defenders outside the area and rattling a left-footed shot into the far corner.

Now toying with his prey, he released Griezmann with a delicious chipped pass and the Frenchman sent in a low cross for Firpo to complete the thrashing.

Koeman expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance after making several changes and said they were feeling confident ahead of Tuesday's showdown against PSG, who will be without an injured Neymar.

"We believe we can get through the tie. They have some injuries but so do we and we'll have to play very well to knock them out," added the coach.

"We have to be more efficient than ever in attack and strong in defence. I'm sure it'll be a marvellous game."

Real Madrid's French duo Karim Benzema and Ferland Mendy struck in the second half as the Spanish champions overcame an injury crisis to beat Getafe 2-0 at home on Tuesday and close the gap to La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid to five points.

Benzema leapt to connect with a curling cross from Vinicius Jr. and head Real in front on the hour mark, giving the hosts a deserved lead after dominating the first half against an unambitious Getafe side who had only one shot on goal all game.

French left-back Ferland Mendy doubled their lead six minutes later, starting the move with a bursting run through midfield before sliding in to knock home a cross from Marcelo.

The victory took Zinedine Zidane's side into second in the standings and left them five points below Atletico, who drew 2-2 with Celta Vigo on Monday to end an eight-game winning streak but have two games in hand.

"This win gives us a lot of confidence, I think we are on our way back to our best," said Benzema.

"Getafe always makes things difficult for you but we put in a big performance. We're just focusing on ourselves, we're not looking at the league table but we're going to try to win every game because there's still a long way to go in the season."

Real were missing nine first-team players through injury or suspension, which led Zidane to field an unorthodox 3-4-3 formation which was particularly effective down the left-hand side due to the twin threat of left-backs Mendy and Marcelo.

He also gave 20-year-old midfielder Marvin Park his first start for the club, although the youngster only lasted 55 minutes before being taken off for 19-year-old Sergio Arribas.

Defender Victor Chust also came on late to make his league debut.

The Spanish captain has not played for the club since 2-1 defeat by Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals on January 14. Since his absence, Zidane's team has witnessed a string of defeats.&nbsp;

The Los Blancos were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by third division Alcoyano last month, while last Saturday they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat by home to Levante after having a centre back Eder Militao sent off after nine minutes.

The loss saw them slip behind Barcelona into third in the standings and 10 points adrift of runaway La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid, who also have a game in hand.

However, Sergio Ramos is yet to decide his future in Real Madrid with just five months remaining in the contract and having played for 16 years at one club.&nbsp;

Lionel Messi underlined his worth to Barcelona by scoring a sensational free-kick on Sunday but Atletico Madrid are in charge of La Liga after beating Cadiz to stand 10 points clear at the top of the table.&nbsp;

Messi's stunning effort in a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao had been matched by the Argentinian's friend and former team-mate Luis Suarez, who earlier curled in a superb free-kick of his own in Atletico's 4-2 victory over Cadiz.&nbsp;

Atletico end the weekend even further ahead after Real Madrid's defeat by Levante on Saturday, which means Zinedine Zidane's side are now level with Barca on points, both of them struggling to keep pace in the title race.

"Every game is an important step towards reaching the goal we set ourselves at the start of the season," said Diego Simeone. "We have to keep pushing each other."

Barca's win at least maintains their momentum while Messi's 650th club goal may have carried extra satisfaction for the Argentinian, who had the details of his contract published in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo on Saturday night.&nbsp;

El Mundo claimed the deal signed by Messi in 2017 shows he could earn up to 555 million euros over its four years, describing it as "the colossal contract that ruined Barcelona".&nbsp;

"Someone has done it with bad intentions to cause problems," said Ronald Koeman. "You have to respect a player who has given so much to Spanish football and to this club. I didn't have any doubts that it wouldn't affect him on the pitch."

Few can argue with Messi's contribution in that regard, with the 33-year-old showing against Bilbao why the club have gone to such lengths to keep him.&nbsp;

Bilbao briefly drew level through a Jordi Alba own-goal early in the second half but Antoine Griezmann's strike secured Barca their third consecutive victory, with Ousmane Dembele and Frenkie de Jong both impressive again.&nbsp;

Asked what Messi worth is to the team, Griezmann said: "What a question, we are enjoying him, he is a legend. I hope we can keep enjoying him for many more years."

<h2>- Suarez haunts Barca -</h2>

But Barcelona continue to be haunted by the spectre of Suarez, whose tremendous free-kick and then a penalty helped Atletico push their advantage into double figures.&nbsp;

While Messi's free-kick was closer and bent perfectly into the top right-hand corner, Suarez's shot was further out and hit harder, a fizzing effort that curled into the left side of the net.

"The other day they were practising free-kicks," said Simeone. "I told him we had not seen him score many goals from free-kicks so that's why I smiled when I saw him score this one."

"After spending so long at Barca with Messi, it was difficult," added Suarez.

He was the driving force again, his two goals making it nine in his last eight games and 14 now for the season.&nbsp;

His goals and assists have now earned Atletico 12 extra points in the league, with Barcelona's decision to let him leave, especially for title rivals, seeming more misjudged by the week.&nbsp;

It could get even worse for them and Real Madrid, given Simeone's side still have a game in hand over each of them.&nbsp;

Both would have been given hope by a rousing display from newly-promoted Cadiz, who were inspired by the relentless Alvaro Negredo.&nbsp;

The 35-year-old scored twice, could have had a hat-trick and certainly did not deserve to be on the losing side.

But Suarez's double, between goals from Saul Niguez and Koke late on, sealed another three points for Atletico, who now have the La Liga crown within reach, even with half of the season left to play.

'I believe so': Zidane says still has players’ backing despite Real Madrid Copa del Ray humiliation

The Spanish soccer federation on Tuesday suspended Lionel Messi for two matches after the Barcelona forward hit an opponent in an off-the-ball incident during the Spanish Super Cup final against Atletic Bilbao.

Messi was facing a suspension of up to 12 matches for swinging his arm at an Athletic Bilbao player during Barcelona’s 3-2 defeat in the final of Spanish Super Cup. The federation’s competition committee didn’t deem the incident to be severe and imposed a lenient penalty against Messi.&nbsp;

Messi appeared to have swung his right arm aimed towards the head of the Athletic Bilbao forward Asier Villalibre as they ran toward the penalty box. After the incident, Messi was handed his first red in 753 appearances for Barcelona.&nbsp;

Referee Gil Manzano, in his match report, stated that Messi hit his opponent with “excessive force” when the ball was not close to him. The suspension will force Messi to miss Barcelona’s match against Cornell in the Copa del Rey and against Elche in the Spanish league.

The Spanish soccer federation on Tuesday suspended Lionel Messi for two matches after the Barcelona forward hit an opponent in an off-the-ball incident during the Spanish Super Cup final against Atletic Bilbao. Messi was facing a suspension of up to 12 matches for swinging his arm at an Athletic Bilbao player during Barcelona’s 3-2 defeat in the final of Spanish Super Cup. The federation’s competition committee didn’t deem the incident to be severe and imposed a lenient penalty against Messi. Messi appeared to have swung his right arm aimed towards the head of the Athletic Bilbao forward Asier Villalibre as they ran toward the penalty box. After the incident, Messi was handed his first red in 753 appearances for Barcelona. The suspension will force Messi to miss Barcelona’s match against Cornell in the Copa del Rey and against Elche in the Spanish league. Meanwhile, Barcelona was handed a shock 2-3 defeat by Athletic Bilbao after the latter scored an extra-time winner to lift the coveted Spanish Super Cup. Lionel Messi banned for two matches after historic Barcelona red card

Barcelona announced on Friday that the club's presidential elections have been postponed after a rise in coronavirus cases prompted heavy restrictions in the region.&nbsp;

The elections were set for January 24 but the Catalonian government told the club on Friday morning that exceptions to the rules would not be made to allow people to vote.

The delay means Barcelona will not have a new regime in charge for the last week of the January transfer window while Lionel Messi's future is set to remain unresolved for a while longer.&nbsp;

Messi's contract expires at the end of June, when he could leave the club for free, having failed in an attempt to secure an exit last summer.&nbsp;

A new date has not been set for the elections but the club said in a statement it would ask the Catalonian government to&nbsp;allow people to vote by post.&nbsp;

The statement read: "For its part, the club has understood the impossibility of holding elections on the scheduled date due to mobility restrictions decreed by the Catalan Government in the current context of pandemic, which is why the date of the elections must be&nbsp;delayed.

"In this sense, the club has asked the Catalan Government to evaluate the possibility of modifying the current sports legislation in order to enable voting by post on the new date of the elections, a request that the Government has undertaken to study."

Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Toni Freixa are the three candidates who will stand, after each gained the required number of signatures from club members. Laporta and Font are considered the two favourites to win.

Laporta was Barca president between 2003 and 2010, overseeing the appointment of Pep Guardiola as coach and his hugely successful first two years in charge.&nbsp;

Laporta also claims to enjoy a close relationship with Messi and insists the Argentinian can be persuaded to stay.&nbsp;

Font, meanwhile, has framed himself as the candidate for the future, although he has also been clear Messi signing a new contract would be a priority.&nbsp;

Font has been keen to emphasise his close ties with Xavi Hernandez, the club's former midfielder touted as a potential replacement for Ronald Koeman as coach.&nbsp;

Laporta, Font and Freixa are bidding to succeed Josep Maria Bartomeu, who brought his turbulent tenure as president to an end in October, following mounting pressure from fans and his public falling out with Messi.&nbsp;

After a dismal year on the pitch, Barca fans will hope a new president brings a fresh start but the winning candidate will be constrained by the club's dire financial situation, caused by an enormous wage bill and worsened by the consequences of the pandemic.&nbsp;

Shortly before Bartomeu resigned in October, Barcelona had announced losses of 97 million euros for the previous season, with debt more than doubling to 488 million euros.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The team are third in La Liga, seven points behind Atletico Madrid, who have two games in hand.

An interim board has been led by Carles Tusquets since October. The three candidates will meet with Tusquets later on Friday when a new election schedule could be confirmed.&nbsp;

Barcelona presidential elections postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions, club confirm

The LaLiga 2020-21 season has been full of surprises. While both the giants Real Madrid and Barcelona started the league on a sluggish note before picking up pace, the likes of Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad, Villareal, Sevilla among others have flourished to leave the football fans hooked to their screens. &nbsp;

While it hasn’t been the easiest of the season when it comes to organising or even playing matches behind closed doors amid the COVID-19 pandemic, LaLiga has come out on top to produce some great football.&nbsp;

Former Real Madrid midfielder and La Liga ambassador, Fernando Hierro on Wednesday admitted that it has been a complicated season when it comes to playing or watching football as he said, as a footballer, it was always about the electric atmosphere in the Spanish club or during European competitions. The former Spanish international further lauded the quality of the Spanish top-flight as he said that the quality of players and clubs this season have made the LaLiga more exciting to watch as a fan of the game.&nbsp;

When asked for his perspective as a former player about how he looks at the table, which is pretty tight in the middle and bottom, Hierro said he has been left surprised to see Valencia (16th) sitting so low in the table while adding that the competition in the league has grown. As a former Valladolid player, Hierro wished his former club hit form soon.&nbsp;

“I am surprised. Valencia have got great players. There are teams bottom of the table who are changing coaches. Huesca, Osasuna, Alaves...Valladolid, I played there for two years with Ronaldo as the chairman. The teams are pretty equal and I think we will have to wait for the end of the season to know who the relegated teams are, it is that tight. La Liga has been very competitive this season. I am very surprised Valencia are so low in the table,” Fernando Hierro, LaLiga ambassador and a legend of the game said answered WION’s query during a media interaction.&nbsp;

“I was lucky to have watched the last Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid as a LaLiga ambassador. It is difficult for the fans and local clubs to play matches in front of empty stands. It's very complicated. You know it is a special year with lots of matches lined up and this season, the teams are quite equal. What's important is for the players is to not get injured and COVID-19 has affected a lot. It is a difficult year for players, trainers and all involved in the football industry. I think LaLiga and the clubs are putting a lot of efforts to make sure the season goes without any major problems,” the former Spanish international further said. &nbsp;

Hierro further heaped praise on Real Sociedad, who have touched new heights under the management of Alguacil Imanol and new signing David Silva. &nbsp;

“Real Sociedad have surprised me the most because there are many lively players. I like Sevilla a lot too. Villareal started off well. Real Madrid and Barcelona are always there. Of course, they started a bit low and it is difficult with all the competitions in Champions League and Super Cup. Villareal is another team. Atletico Madrid are consistent and that is why they are four points clear in the top of the table,” the former Real Madrid midfielder with 601 appearances for Los Merengues said.&nbsp;

However, with the January transfer window going on and summer transfer window approaching, the biggest question among the football fans remain whether Lionel Messi will sign a new contract with Barcelona or not. Even the future of Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos is hanging in balance. When asked if Messi and Ramos’ departure will have an impact on LaLiga, Hierro cited the examples of Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo as he said the structure and competitive nature of the league make LaLiga a worldwide spectacle. &nbsp;

“Messi came in as a young Argentian player. But clubs go through a lot of rebuilding. Barcelona are going to have presidential elections now and I think, Messi's next move will depend on who the next Barcelona president is and club's project. It is a special case of Messi and even Sergio Ramos for that instance. They represent two of the best clubs in the world. The likes of Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo left as well but the structure and competitive nature of La Liga are above individual players. The El Clasicos, derbies - it is a worldwide spectacle more than just individuals. But having said that, I would want both Messi and Ramos to continue in LaLiga,” Hierro said.&nbsp;

With game week 19 of LaLiga set to start from January 19, fans can watch all matches of LaLiga on Facebook Watch as the second phase of the league awaits.&nbsp;
