The Spanish La Liga have stepped up their attack on cash-rich clubs Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester city. The league claims that the two clubs have continuously breached financial fair play rules and have lodged a formal complaint with UEFA.

La Liga claim continuous 'FFP breaches' against Manchester City, PSG

LaLiga have filed a complaint to UEFA against Paris St Germain and Manchester City over alleged Financial Fair Play violations, the Spanish professional soccer league announced on Wednesday. The organisation said it would take "further legal action to the European Union, France and Switzerland" justice systems as it understands that "these clubs are continually breaching the current regulations" of financial fair play.
LaLiga said it lodged the complaint against Manchester City to UEFA in April before filing the one against PSG last week.

The Spanish league also said it was "contemplating expanding that complaint" against City due to "new data" that has come to light. Although the statement did not give any specific details, the English champions signed Norway striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund on a contract that reportedly could cost them over 300 million euros ($313 million), including his salary, agent fees and bonuses. LaLiga president Javier Tebas said last month the organisation would take legal action against the French club after Kylian Mbappe snubbed a move to Real Madrid at the 11th hour and renewed his contract with PSG until 2025.
LaLiga reacted angrily to Mbappe`s contract extension, saying PSG`s new offer to Mbappe "attacks the economic stability" of European football.

"It is scandalous that a club like PSG, which last season reported losses of more than 220 million euros ($232.32 million) after accumulating losses of more than 700 million euros in prior seasons ... with a squad cost around 650 million for this season, can close such an agreement," LaLiga said at the time.
After months of negotiations with Real Madrid, France international Mbappe ended up staying with the Ligue 1 champions for a reported annual salary of 50 million euros until 2025.

This is not the first time that LaLiga has filed complaints against "state owned clubs" PSG and Manchester City. PSG is owned by the state-run Qatar Sports Investments, while City is under Abu Dhabi ownership.
In 2017 and 2018, it had also filed complaints against the two clubs over breach of financial fair play rules, leading to sanctions by UEFA. However, City and PSG lodged appeals with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), who ruled in the two clubs` favour, a decision the Spanish league called "strange”.

LaLiga also announced it was "studying different legal options in Switzerland" against PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi for "possible conflicts of interest" derived from his different roles running the French club, and his different roles in UEFA, European Club Association (ECA) and BeIN Sports.

La Liga file complaints against Lionel Messi-starrer PSG, EPL champions Manchester City to UEFA

FC Barcelona are one of the most successful clubs in the history of football. The Spanish giants have not only been a force to reckon with in the La Liga but have also dominated European football for decades. Some of the greatest footballers of all time have donned the Barcelona jersey and have played for the Blaugrana. However, FC Barcelona currently find themselves in a massive financial mess.

Barcelona are debt-ridden and are facing one of their worst-ever financial crunches. The situation is a dire one and the club's vice-president Eduard Romeu has claimed they need at least 500 million Euros in order 'to save the club' this year. Barcelona are seriously strapped for cash and have not been able to fund big signings.

One of the most valuable clubs in the world, Barcelona were once known as a huge spender in the transfer market. They have signed the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Greizmann and Philippe Coutinho among others, who are some of the most expensive footballers of all time. Barcelona also had Lionel Messi in their squad until 2021 and he was one of the highest-paid footballers in the world at the time.

However, the club is no more stable financially and have had to let go of a number of superstars due to the crunch. Some of the star players like Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique also had to take pay cuts last season as Barcelona struggled to match La Liga's salary cap requirements. Now the club's vice-president Romeu has said Barcelona need 500 million Euros to save themselves.

"The number doing the most damage is asset imbalance. The negative capital of €500 million. You could add €150m to that in losses this season if we didn’t do anything. I said it before, if someone wants give me €500 million... That is what we need to save Barca," Romeu told Spanish outlet Sport in an interview.

Barcelona's debt has reportedly reached a staggering 1 billion Euros. In October last year, it was reported that the club owed around 98 million Euros in fees to other clubs for player transfers. They are in a critical situation and might need to sell some more big names this season while expecting not too many significant arrivals at the Camp Nou this summer.

Among the top players who can be sold this summer is Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong, who has been heavily linked with Manchester United and is likely to be offloaded soon by the Spanish club, who are in desperate need of unds. United are expected to sign De Jong for around 70-80 million Euros, as per reports.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has issued a brutal response to La Liga president Javier Tebas after he claimed Kylian Mbappe's latest deal with PSG was an 'insult to football'. Mbappe snubbed Real Madrid to extend his stay with his current club PSG in one of the richest deals ever in football history.

As per reports, Mbappe will be earning a whopping 4.9 million USD per month as per his new three-year contract with PSG and is also set to take home a signing-on bonus of around 100 million USD. Tebas slammed PSG for not respecting the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules in order to ensure Mbappe extended his contract at PSG by snubbing Madrid.

"What PSG is doing by renewing Mbappe with large sums of money...after posting losses of 700 million euros in recent seasons and having a wage bill of over 600 million euros, is an INSULT to football," Tebas said in a tweet.

He also aimed a dig at PSG president Al-Khelaifi and called him more dangerous than Super League. A Super League was proposed last year which would have involved only 12 of the most powerful clubs in the world. The proposal received intense criticism and had to be dissolved soon owing to the backlash.

"PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi 'is as dangerous as the Super League'," Tebas added.

Al-Khelaifi has now responded to the La Liga president's comments about him and his club. The PSG president hit back at Tebas and said La Liga isn't at the same level as it was 4-5 years back. Al-Khelaifi said Tebas might be worried that Ligue 1 has become stronger than La Liga now.

"I think the president of our league can respond to that. Maybe it's a good thing if Ligue 1 is doing better than LaLiga," Al-Khelaifi said at Mbappe's first press conference with him after signing his new three-year deal at PSG.

“We have Mbappé, he stays with us and the rest, honestly I don’t care," he added.

'Insult to football': La Liga president slams PSG after Kylian Mbappe rejects Real Madrid to stay in Paris

Barcelona defeated lowly Mallorca 2-1 on Sunday to snap a three-match losing run at Camp Nou in all competitions as they climbed to second in LaLiga behind champions Real Madrid. With Real already having secured a record-extending 35th LaLiga title on Saturday, Barcelona made sure the disappointment of being out of the running for the top prize did not distract them from the job at hand.

Memphis Depay`s first-half strike calmed nerves at Camp Nou, where almost half the seats remained empty as fans disappointed with their team`s showing this season opted to stay away. Captain Sergio Busquets extended their lead early in the second half from a rebound.

Mallorca defender Antonio Raillo took advantage of a lapse in Barca`s defense to fire home a consolation from close range in the 79th minute. Xavi Hernandez`s team leapfrogged Sevilla to second in the standings. They are two points ahead of Julen Lopetegui`s side with 66 points.

With four games left, champions Real hold an unassailable 15-point lead over Barca. Mallorca are 16th with 32 points, a point above the drop zone.

"It’s very frustrating seeing Real Madrid win the league so early and with such an advantage,” midfielder Frenkie de Jong told Movistar Plus.

"But we have to admit that we struggled this season, didn’t play to our standards and were not able to compete with them. I hope next season things change for the best."

Barcelona are now in a close race with Sevilla and Atletico Madrid to secure second spot in LaLiga, with the three clubs separated by just five points. The club that finishes second will earn an extra 3.4 million euros ($3.58 million) as they will feature in the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Following a brilliant through pass by Jordi Alba, Depay fired Barcelona ahead in the 25th minute with a close-range finish. The Catalans extended their lead early in the second half when Busquets controlled a rebound in a crowded area and found the space to drill the ball into the back of the net.

Mallorca’s goal came from nowhere and the final score made the match look closer than it was. Teenager Ansu Fati was given a standing ovation when he made his first LaLiga appearance for Barca since November, coming on as a second-half substitute.

The 19-year-old has struggled to regain full fitness after suffering a number of injury setbacks over the past year.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang strike earns FC Barcelona tough win against Real Sociedad

Real Madrid and Villarreal reaching the Champions League semi-finals this week showed the strength of LaLiga, Barcelona manager Xavi said on Wednesday as he eyes a return to Europe`s elite competition next season.

Real knocked out holders Chelsea while Villarreal stunned German champions Bayern Munich to reach the last four of the competition on Tuesday.

Xavi could only watch on as his side are in action on Thursday in the second-tier Europa League, hosting Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg of their quarter-final. The tie is level after a 1-1 draw in last week`s first leg in Germany.
However, Xavi praised his Spanish rivals for their progress and said it showed the quality of the league.

"What happened on Tuesday shows that LaLiga is not far behind the Premier League," Xavi told a news conference.

"No matter what, LaLiga will always be LaLiga and it`s very competitive. I saw both games. I am a soccer fan. And in the end our main goal is to be back in the Champions League.

"By the way, Villarreal are a big club now, aren`t they? You all should put them on your big clubs list."

The Europa League represents Barca`s only realistic chance of lifting a trophy this season as Real have a 12 point advantage at the top of the LaLiga standings. Barca are second, level on 30 points with third-placed Sevilla.

However, Xavi denied there was pressure on his side to win silverware due to Real`s form.

"It is the history of Barca that demands of us, not Madrid," the Spanish coach said. "We do not look at Real Madrid to mirror ourselves. Our history is our biggest pressure and responsibility.

Real Madrid and Villarreal show LaLiga not far behind Premier League, says Barcelona head coach Xavi

Barcelona striker Luuk de Jong scored a header in added time to give his side a 3-2 win at struggling Levante after a remarkable, end-to-end game in which his side gave away three penalties. Barca are the first team in LaLiga to win a match after conceding three penalties and De Jong`s last-gasp goal saw them record a seventh consecutive league win, lifting them into second in the standings on 60 points after 30 games.

But they are still a long way behind leaders Real Madrid, who have 72 points from 31 after beating Getafe 2-0 at home on Saturday. Levante are 19th on 22 points. Levante took a surprise but deserved lead against a lacklustre Barca in the 52nd minute when captain Jose Luis Morales scored from the spot after a foul by Dani Alves.

Moments later the hosts earned a second penalty, for a handball by Eric Garcia, who had prevented Levante from taking the lead in the first half when he scrambled a shot from Morales off the line. This time striker Roger Marti stepped up to take it and his effort was saved by Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The visitors quickly made Levante pay, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang heading home a cross from Ousmane Dembele in the 59th minute.

Teenage midfielder Pedri then gave Barca the lead in the 63rd, thumping a first-time shot into the bottom corner after being teed up by 17-year-old Gavi, who had also been hauled on from the bench in the second half. Levante then won a third penalty of the second half when Dani Gomez latched on to a through ball and was tripped by Barca defender Clement Lenglet. Gonzalo Melero assumed taking duties and made no mistake against Ter Stegen to level in the 83rd.

But there was time for one final twist in an enthralling encounter when substitute De Jong connected with a Jordi Alba cross and headed into the bottom corner in the second minute of added time. "The fact we won while conceding three penalties shows we are very competitive and have a winning mentality," said Barca coach Xavi.

"I was concerned about this game because Levante are a difficult side with great players and they have beaten sides like Villarreal and Atletico Madrid. We`ve earned three golden points that keep us in the fight."
But when pressed on whether Barca had a chance of catching runaway leaders Real, the coach added: "It`s very difficult because Real Madrid seldom slip up. But if they drop a few points in the next two weeks we can start to believe a little more."

La Liga: Barcelona register emphatic victory despite conceding three penalties versus Levante

Gareth Bale was greeted by loud boos on Saturday as he made his first competitive appearance on the Santiago Bernabeu pitch in more than two years during Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Getafe.

The 32-year-old had made only four previous league appearances for Real this season -- all away -- and his last outing at the club's home ground had been in February 2020 when Madrid were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City in the Champions League.

In the past Bale, who joined Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 for a then-record transfer fee of 100 million euros, has had run-ins with the club's management and almost left in 2020 after he fell out of favour with then manager Zinedine Zidane.

Recently, however, he has suffered multiple fitness setbacks and the fans and as well as local media have turned on him.

"The booing is understandable but our fans need to understand that their support is very important too," Real coach Carlo Ancelotti told reporters.

"Yes, Bale was booed but he is a serious professional, he is doing well in training and if necessary he will play this final stretch of the season. The fans have to understand that."

Bale recently hit out at Spanish newspaper Marca for comparing him to a "parasite" over claims that he was sucking money out of the Spanish club.

He was also accused by Madrid media of faking a back injury after he missed Real Madrid's 4-0 defeat by Barcelona but then showed up for his country just four days later to score two goals as Wales beat Austria in a World Cup playoff game.

But Bale, who came on as a substitute midway through the second half on Saturday, still has the backing of his Madrid teammates.

"We all are with Bale," said Real Madrid captain Marcelo.

"It is difficult, it has happened to many people at Santiago Bernabeu that has a very demanding fanbase but we are all important.

"We are at the end of the season, we have a lot at stake, we have to help each other. It's sad but we all have to go out there and give our best."

La Liga: Karim Benzema scores brace as Real Madrid register thrilling 2-1 win against Celta Vigo

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice as a rejuvenated Barcelona gave a football masterclass to inflict a humiliating 4-0 defeat on rivals Real Madrid on Sunday, thrashing Carlo Ancelotti’s LaLiga leaders on their own ground.

A sold-out Santiago Bernabeu stadium watched silently as a much-improved Barca under the command of new coach Xavi Hernandez dominated `El Clasico` from the start.

With Ousmane Dembele and Ferran Torres exposing Real`s defensive frailty on the flanks, Barca opened the scoring in the 29th minute with an Aubameyang header from a Dembele cross.

Barca kept up the tempo against a disorganised and lifeless Real Madrid and extended their lead when defender Ronald Araujo headed in from a Dembele corner.

Ancelotti tried to change the dynamic, making two substitutions during the break but Barca scored in the first minute of the second half with an angled shot from Torres after a backheel by Aubameyang.

Five minutes later, former Manchester City forward Torres returned the favour, teeing up ex-Arsenal striker Aubameyang for his second goal.

Barca had several opportunities to extend their lead, but Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois avoided any further humiliation.

With Real Madrid sitting comfortably on top of the standings with 66 points, Sunday’s Clasico was never likely to determine the fate of LaLiga’s title race.

But pride was on the line and Xavi`s much improved Barca showed that their recent return to form was genuine.
After their fifth consecutive league win, Barca are third in the standings on 54 points with a game in hand, three points behind second-placed Sevilla.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scripts unique El Clasico record with stunning brace as Barca thrash Real Madrid

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his first three goals for Barcelona in a 4-1 win at Valencia - the third a deflection attributed to him only after the match, lifting his side to fourth place in LaLiga on Sunday.

The former Arsenal striker, who last found the net in October in the Gunners' 3-1 win over Aston Villa, now has 10 goals overall this season.

Frenkie de Jong scored the second goal for Barcelona, who looked much improved after struggling at the start of the campaign in the wake of the departure of talisman Lionel Messi.

Initially the fourth goal was attributed to Pedri, but when the referee issued his match report after the game, he switched it to Aubameyang as Pedri's strike was deflected off the striker's back on its way in.

Carlos Soler scored a consolation goal for the locals.

The win lifted Barcelona into fourth place on 42 points from 24 games, tied with Atletico who are fifth on goal difference. Real Madrid top the table with 57 points.

Barca were once again clinical upfront, scoring four goals from only six shots on target. They have now netted 10 goals in their last three league games.

"We are beginning to find that efficiency that we were lacking earlier in the season," captain Sergio Busquets told reporters.

"I hope Aubameyang is that one piece that we were missing upfront. He is a great player that arrived hungry because he was not getting many opportunities at his last club. It is a luxury having him in our team."

It was also a busy afternoon for the video assistant referee, who had to intervene at two key points, disallowing a first-half goal for Valencia after spotting that the ball was inches out of play at the start of the move, and later overturning a penalty for Barca due to Aubameyang being very narrowly offside.

Barca appear to be refinding their confidence in the last few weeks under manager Xavi Hernandez. They were in charge of possession from the beginning, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen was solid at the back, frustrating almost all Valencia's efforts to fight back.

La Liga: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bags hat-trick as Barcelona thrash Valencia 4-1

Barcelona fought back to beat Atletico Madrid 4-2 in a LaLiga thriller at the Camp Nou on Sunday as they clinically saw off the champions by scoring four goals from their only four shots on target in the game.

The win moved Barcelona up to fourth place on 38 points from 22 games, leapfrogging Atletico, who are now two points adrift in fifth. Real Madrid are top with 50 points and host Granada later on Sunday.

Barcelona dominated every part of the game from the beginning and were unperturbed when Yannick Carrasco opened the scoring on the counter eight minutes into the first half.

Jordi Alba got the equaliser two minutes later with a magnificent volley from a Dani Alves cross, and Gavi headed Barca in front a few minutes later.

Ronald Araujo extended their lead before halftime, striking home on the rebound from inside the six-yard box after Gerard Pique`s header hit the bar.

Alves scored their fourth right after the break, smashing home a low shot from the edge of the box. Atletico coach Diego Simeone made four substitutions and Luis Suarez reduced the deficit, heading a loose ball into the net from close range.

Alves spoiled his man-of-the-match performance when he was sent off with a straight red card after he stomped on Carrasco in the 69th minute.

Usually known for being rock-solid, Atletico`s defence have leaked 30 goals in 22 league games so far, five more than they conceded during their entire title-winning campaign last season.

Lacking their usual discipline and prone to mistakes, they have now let in the most goals of the top 10 LaLiga sides and have won only three of their last 10 games in all competitions.

Barcelona exploited Atletico`s fragility on the flanks, with Alves and Adama Traore both excelling for Xavi Hernandez`s much improved side.

"Today we have seen the Barca that we want," Jordi Alba told reporters.

"We have played with a lot of intensity, and it is a game to be very proud of in such a difficult year."

La Liga: FC Barcelona rope in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as he terminates contract with Arsenal

The 1.99 billion euros ($2.24 billion) media rights deal between LaLiga and private equity firm CVC is likely to open the door for similar high-stake investments across Europe’s major soccer leagues, LaLiga told Reuters on Monday.

"We are the first but won`t be the only one,” Spanish soccer league executive director Oscar Mayo told Reuters in an interview.

“Many leagues are calling us to ask if we can help them on how to structure their deal."

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s launch of the partnership, the first of its kind in soccer with a private equity fund, Mayo added: "France is in the verge of doing so and already have the support of their government, Portugal and Italy are also close. It won`t take long to see similar deals being signed.”

Reuters reported in December that buyout funds including CVC and Bain Capital were lining up preliminary bids for a stake worth some 1.5 billion euros in the French league media rights business.

Beyond a much-needed cash injection, Ligue 1 hopes that private equity firms could help make French soccer more attractive, and double or treble revenues in five to 10 years.

"The industry have matured enough now to have the credibility to do this type of partnership," Mayo said.

"Ten years ago the clubs were losing money, lots of players were suffering with unpaid salaries, we had a debt of more than 300 million euros with the government. The industry was not ready, it was difficult even to get financial help from banks. We needed to create stability and structure through the Financial Fair Play so we could inspire trust to investors."

The 1.99 billion euro investment will secure CVC an 8.2% stake in a new company that will manage revenues from LaLiga`s broadcasting and sponsorship rights for 50 years.

LaLiga expects the total value of its business to increase from 24.2 to 33-35 billion euros in between seven to 10 years, and it will also help the clubs to invest their share of the money the right way.

The clubs will have to allocate 70% of funds for infrastructure and modernisation projects. Up to 15% can be used to sign players, with the remaining 15% for reducing debt. Each club will present their projects to LaLiga before June and it will have to be approved.

"We want to build in four years what would have taken 20 years to do in normal circumstances. We`ll grow faster than other leagues and close the gap to the English Premier League," Mayo said, explaining that first installment of 400 million euros was delivered in January and in July CVC will have paid the first 1 billion euros.

The other 1 billion will be paid in installments over the next two years.

"The clubs will be modernised, the fan experience will be better and our value will grow. The other European leagues are aware of that and will follow our path," Mayo said.

CVC has invested in Formula 1, Moto GP, rugby and tennis and it is the third time the private equity fund has tried to invest in a top European league, after separate plans with Italy`s Serie A and Germany`s Bundesliga were scrapped last year.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao are taking legal action against LaLiga over the deal. The three clubs opted out from the deal, calling it "an illegal transaction that causes irreparable damage" to Spanish football.

A stunning late goal by Antonio Puertas gave Granada a shock 1-1 draw against Barcelona in LaLiga on Saturday. Striker Luuk de Jong`s second-half header, following a perfect cross from Dani Alves, gave Barca the lead but Puertas pulled the home side level with his 89th-minute goal.

The Catalan giants were reduced to 10 players when Gavi was sent off in the 79th minute for fouling Alex Collado. "It all got very complicated after the red card," Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets told reporters. "We managed the game well in the second half, especially after the goal, but we were too anxious. After Gavi was sent off it was difficult for us to control the ball."

Barcelona are sixth in the standings with 32 points from 20 games, 14 points behind leaders Real Madrid. Granada, who are unbeaten in LaLiga since late November, are 12th with 24 points.

De Jong and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, two of the most criticised Barca players in the first half of the season, were the bright spots for the Catalans for the second consecutive league match.

The Dutch forward, who had a goal disallowed by the video referee for a close offside, almost scored minutes later with a bicycle kick for the second week in a row, while Ter Stegen made a marvellous one-handed save of a powerful, low shot from Granada’s Darwin Machis.

Alves, making his first league appearance following his return to Barca after six years, helped the team with an assist and two crucial defensive clearances.

"It all got very complicated after the red card," Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets told reporters. "We managed the game well in the second half, especially after the goal, but we were too anxious. After Gavi was sent off it was difficult for us to control the ball." Barcelona are sixth in the standings with 32 points from 20 games, 14 points behind leaders Real Madrid. Granada, who are unbeaten in LaLiga since late November, are 12th with 24 points. Barca dominated most of the game but Granada redoubled their efforts when teenager Gavi was sent off after collecting a second yellow card. Granada pressed until Puertas was in the right place at the right time to strike, sending a left-footed shot into Ter Stegen`s top left corner.

Real Madrid strike duo Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr both scored a brace to give the LaLiga leaders a 4-1 home win over Valencia on Saturday, putting them back on track after last weekend`s disappointing loss to Getafe.

Benzema opened the scoring shortly before halftime from the penalty spot, his 300th goal in all competitions for Real. He is the fourth player in the club`s history to reach the milestone after Alfredo di Stefano (308), Raul (323) and Cristiano Ronaldo (450).
Fan favourite Vinicius, who missed Real`s last two games after testing positive for COVID-19, came back with a vengeance and scored twice early in the second half.

Goncalo Guedes scored Valencia`s consolation goal in the 76th minute with a header on the rebound after Thibaut Courtois had saved his penalty kick. Benzema sealed the emphatic win two minutes from the end with a low shot from inside the box.

"It`s an honour and I`m proud to reach 301 goals with Real Madrid because they are the best club in the world," Benzema told reporters. "We played a great game for ourselves but also for the fans, who deserved it after the loss to Getafe."
Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of the standings to 49 points from 21 games, eight points ahead of Sevilla who have two games in hand and host Getafe on Sunday.

It took a while for Carlo Ancelotti`s team to warm up on a freezing winter night at Santiago Bernabeu, where the fans are becoming used to gathering between scaffolding as Real Madrid continue the 800-million-euro ($908.72 million) renovation of their home.
After a flat beginning, Real found their rhythm late in the first half as Luka Modric struck a shot that rattled the crossbar from the edge of the box.

The hosts kept pressing until they found the opener after Casemiro fell inside the area when challenged by defender Omar Alderete. Benzema stepped up and rifled the ball into the top right corner beyond Jasper Cillessen.

Real kept up their pace after halftime and Vinicius scored twice in nine minutes, first after a beautiful combination with Benzema, clearing two defenders before finishing all alone in the six-yard-box. His second came from tapping in a rebound on the goal line following an effort from Marco Asensio.

Benzema`s goals meant he stayed clear at the top of the scoring charts in LaLiga this season with 17, followed by Vinicius on 12. Together they have scored 29 of Real`s 45 league goals this campaign.

Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr shine as Real Madrid thrash Valencia 4-1 in La Liga

An early goal from Turkish striker Enes Unal shocked LaLiga leaders Real Madrid as they lost 1-0 at Getafe on Sunday and ended an unbeaten run that had lasted 15 matches in all competitions. With 46 points from 20 games, Real Madrid are still top but are not as comfortable as before. Sevilla are second with 38 points and two games in hand, and will visit second-from-bottom Cadiz on Monday.

Getafe, led by former Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores, extended their unbeaten streak in LaLiga to six matches and are 16th in the standings, three points above the relegation zone. It was their first win over Real in a decade. Unal scored with a low, powerful strike in the ninth minute after pressuring Real defender Eder Militao into giving up the ball inside the box.

“Let’s be honest, we lost because of a rare individual mistake from Militao who is probably our best player this season,” Real midfielder Casemiro told reporters. “We tried really hard but their keeper was inspired. We were not in our best form today. In Real Madrid we need to play better; it’s not acceptable to lose any game this way.”
Real Madrid had almost 75% of possession but managed only four shots on target during the entire game.
"There is not much to say after a game like this," said manager Carlo Ancelotti. "It looked like our team took a few more days of vacation after Christmas."

The team clearly missed the spark that forward Vinicius Jr usually brings as the Brazilian was absent after a positive COVID-19 test on Wednesday. Belgian midfielder Eden Hazard was named to the substitutes` bench for the second time running by Ancelotti after being out of the starting 11 for three months.
Hazard came on in the second half but contributed little to what was probably Real Madrid`s worst match of the season.

Croatian midfielder Luka Modric was the lone positive note for the leaders as he created most of Real`s opportunities, including a long shot in the first half that hit the bar.

Barcelona striker Luuk de Jong`s first-half header and a stunning stoppage-time save by Marc-Andre ter Stegen secured a 1-0 win at Mallorca on Sunday in a match where the Catalans were missing 14 players due to COVID-19, injuries and suspensions. Barca climbed two places to fifth on 31 points from 19 matches, one point behind Atletico Madrid in fourth and 15 adrift of leaders Real Madrid who have played a game more.
It was vindication time for striker De Jong after several media reports that Barca want to move him on this month.

He got his second goal since arriving from Sevilla in the close season - his first for more than three months.
The Dutchman was Barca`s best player on Sunday as he also hit the post twice in the first half, once with a bicycle kick. The goal came just before the break when he headed home from close range after a cross by Oscar Mingueza.
Barca dominated the game until the final minutes when Mallorca started pressing for an equaliser and almost got it.
Ter Stegen saved Barca in added time with an unbelievable handball-style reflex save with his right arm, denying Jaume Costa whose close-range strike looked like a sure goal.

GOLDEN POINTS
"It was an historic win for us, I`m not exaggerating," Xavi told reporters. "Missing so many players, to go back home with a win - it`s three points worth their weight in gold. "The young players showed up and Ter Stegen made a stop for the ages. I`m thrilled that we manage to win." Barca made the trip without the suspended Sergio Busquets, five injured players (Ansu Fati, Pedri, Memphis Depay, Martin Braithwaite and Sergi Roberto) and eight due to the COVID-19 outbreak at the club (Sergino Dest, Philippe Coutinho, Ez Abde, Jordi Alba, Alex Balde, Ousmane Dembele, Gavi and Dani Alves).

Coach Xavi Hernandez, who said on Saturday that it was "ludicrous" the game was going ahead, had to call on nine players from Barca’s youth academy, starting two of them, Ilias Akhomach and Ferran Jutgla, up front alongside De Jong.

But it was the Dutchman`s night as he led the visitors to victory and back into European spots for the first time since Xavi replaced Ronald Koeman as coach in November. “It was important to win on a Sunday when Real Madrid, Betis, Rayo Vallecano and Real Sociedad all lost points," Barca defender Eric Garcia told reporters.
"We managed to overcome a very complicated situation missing many key players. In the end, we owe Ter Stegen for 71% of our win. That stop was incredible.”

The Catalans had already been hit by a number of COVID cases including Ousmane Dembele, Samuel Umtiti, Gavi, Clement Lenglet, Dani Alves, Jordi Alba and Alejandro Balde.

Barca, who last played in the league in a 1-1 draw at Sevilla on Dec. 21, are seventh on 28 points from 18 games.

FC Barcelona's struggles over the past few years have been well documented with the club struggling with their finances and failing to make an impact in the Champions League as well as the La Liga. Lionel Messi's departure from the Spanish club this year has further worsened their woes as they have been relegated to the Europa League after failing to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League this season.

Barcelona were in a must-win situation in their final Champions League group game against Bayern on Friday. However, they were thrashed 3-0 by the German champions. Barcelona finished third in Group E behind Bayern and Benfica as they were sent to the Europa League.

Frenkie de Jong, who is one of the most talented players in the Barcelona squad at present, has been advised by former Dutch star Ron Vlaar to leave the Spanish club. De Jong has been a pale shadow of his own self at Barca and has struggled to deliver consistently in the midfield.

Former Netherlands defender Vlaar believes De Jong is under immense pressure at Barcelona and plays like someone who is carrying the weight of fifty kilos of potatoes on his back. The Dutchman wants De Jong to leave Barcelona and move to a team like Bayern Munich where he can thrive.

"De Jong now plays football like he has fifty kilos of potatoes on his back. You know what he can bring, but on this team it just doesn't show. I think he's totally out of place right now. A change? To another club? I think Frenkie would play football differently for a team like Bayern," Vlaar said on TV station RTL 7.

While they are out of the Champions League, Barcelona have also struggled in the La Liga so far this season. They are currently placed seventh on the points table with 23 points from 15 games. Arch-rivals Real Madrid are on the top spot with 39 points from 16 matches so far this season.
