Real Madrid legend Luka Modric is set to stay at the club after reportedly agreeing to a one-year contract extension on his current deal. Modric, signed in 2012 from Tottenham Hotspur, will have completed 12 years at the Spanish giants when his contract expires in 2024. Currently, his contract was set for renewal, with Modric expected to either extend or hang his boots as he desired to end his playing career at the helm of the 14-time European Champions.

The deal, yet to be made public, was on the table for several weeks, with Modric keen on the stay at the club. While there were other offers, the 2018 Ballon d’Or was determined to stay with Carlo Ancelotti’s side who bagged yet another title on Saturday evening. The Spanish giants won their 20th Copa del Rey title that saw them end a nine-year drought for domestic cup success.

The new deal will see Modric complete 12 years at the Spanish giants where he has been part of a trophy-laden success story. In 11 seasons so far, he has won the Copa del Rey twice, and La Liga thrice, while he has won the Champions League on five occasions. His other accolades include the prestigious Ballon d’Or he won in 2018 for his excellent show for Real and the Croatian national side, having led them to the final of the World Cup.

Luka Modric to extend Real Madrid stay, set to sign new deal until 2024

Real Madrid are closing in on Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, with Spanish reports Wednesday saying a deal will soon be reached.

The England international, 19, is one of the brightest prospects in world football and is poised to move for over 100 million Euros ($110 million), with Dortmund said to want considerably more.

Bellingham excelled at the World Cup with England in 2022 and has also drawn interest from Madrid's Champions League semi-final opponents Manchester City.

The midfielder signed for Dortmund at 17 from Championship team Birmingham City for 29 million Euros ($32 million) and has become a key player for the German side.&nbsp;

Spanish newspaper Marca say any deal between Madrid and Dortmund will not be announced until the end of the Bundesliga season, with Bellingham's side a point behind leaders Bayern Munich in the title race.

Madrid are looking to find long-term replacements for their veteran players, including midfielders Luka Modric, 37, and Toni Kroos, 33.

Los Blancos brought in young French duo Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni over the past two summer transfer windows and sold holding midfielder Casemiro to Manchester United.

Bellingham has scored 21 goals for Dortmund in 130 appearances across all competitions since arriving in 2020.

Real will look to close the season on a high as they chase a double of Champions League and Copa del Rey while La Liga remains out of hand. Barcelona will be officially the champions of Spain for the first time since 2019 on the weekend while they will face Manchester City in the semifinal of the Champions League.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side is already in the final of the Copa del Rey where they will face Osasuna later this month. However, their eyes will be on the Champions League as they look to win the competition for the sixth time in less than a decade. They are also the defending champions of Europe, having beaten Liverpool in the 2022 showdown in Paris.

Spanish giants Real Madrid close in on Jude Bellingham deal - Reports

Jordi Alba struck a late winner for Barcelona in a 1-0 win over 10-man Osasuna on Tuesday to move the Catalans a step closer to their first La Liga title since 2019.

Xavi Hernandez's side climbed 14 points clear of second place Real Madrid, who lost 2-0 at Real Sociedad.

The visitors had debutant Jorge Herrando sent off in the first half for a professional foul on Pedri, as they sat deep and tried to frustrate hosts Barcelona.

Visiting goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez kept the leaders at bay in the second half but eventually substitute Alba, who has had reduced minutes this season, sliced home a volley to snatch a late victory.

"We're going to wait and see, but it's a giant step forward," said Xavi.

"We suffered too much. We missed some very clear chances, the kind where you can just push it in.

"And then came Jordi's goal, which sometimes makes it better to win like that."

Osasuna coach Jagoba Arrasate rotated heavily to rest players ahead of the Copa del Rey final against Madrid on Saturday, while Barca started with the same side which crushed Real Betis at the weekend.

The Catalans failed to carve out many clear opportunities in the first half against their defensive opponents.

The best chance fell to Pedri after left-back Alejandro Balde found him a few yards out from goal but he did not connect with the ball well, scuffing a shot wide.

Osasuna were reduced to 10 men before the half hour mark when Herrando pulled down Pedri as he ran in on goal.

Xavi brought on Ansu Fati after 35 minutes for Gavi, who appeared to take a knock, and the forward came close at the start of the second half but Fernandez denied him.

<h2>String of saves</h2>

Frenkie de Jong should have sent Barcelona ahead but fired straight at the goalkeeper from six yards out when Pedri found him.

Barcelona's frustration grew when Fernandez saved from Fati again and substitute Ousmane Dembele sent a shot wide from close range.

La Liga's top scorer Robert Lewandowski had another quiet night at the office. When the Polish forward did find the net it was ruled out for offside.

Eventually the breakthrough came with five minutes to go, with substitute Alba volleying home his second goal of the season after De Jong headed the ball into his path, sparking vigorous celebrations.

If Barcelona earn two more points from their last five games, they will be champions.

<h2>Madrid beaten</h2>

Former Madrid winger Takefusa Kubo and Ander Barrenetxea netted the goals for Real Sociedad against Los Blancos, tightening their grip on fourth spot and Champions League qualification.

Madrid defender Dani Carvajal was sent off after an hour for a second yellow card to make matters worse for Los Blancos, who face Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday.

"It's not the best way to prepare for games," said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"A defeat always hurts, it lowers your dynamic, the good feelings, so it's not the best way to prepare for what's to come.

"In the players' heads obviously is more, the Copa final, the Champions League semi-finals, that has an effect.&nbsp;

"When you don't have good concentration, you end up giving away gifts."

The Italian played a makeshift side because of injuries and suspensions, and he also left striker Karim Benzema behind in the Madrid capital ahead of Saturday's cup finale.

Kubo struck at the start of the second half for the hosts after Eder Militao gave the ball away in a dangerous area.&nbsp;

Carvajal was dismissed for a foul on Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal, giving Madrid an uphill struggle.

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois did well to parry a deflected Barrenetxea strike, but he could not keep out the forward's next effort, surprising the Belgian at his near post.

If third place Atletico Madrid beat Cadiz on Wednesday, they can move second.

Real Sociedad are eight points clear of fifth-place Villarreal, who have played one fewer game.

Bottom-of-the-table Elche were relegated after a 2-1 defeat at Almeria.

La Liga: Barcelona inch closer to first title since 2019 with 1-0 win over Osasuna

Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were on target as Barcelona thrashed 10-man Real Betis 4-0 on Saturday to tighten their grip on top spot and moved a step closer to their 27th La Liga title.

With only six games remaining, Barca recovered from a disappointing midweek loss at Rayo Vallecano and moved to 79 points and extended their lead to 11 points over second-placed Real Madrid, while Betis remain sixth on 49 points.

Christensen opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 14th minute with a point-blank header following a cross from Raphinha. Barca's job was made easier by Betis defender Edgar Gonzalez, who came off the bench in the 12th minute to replace an injured Luiz Felipe but was sent off 21 minutes later after seeing two yellow cards for two bad tackles.

The locals made the most of their advantage before the break, scoring twice within three minutes thanks to strikes by Lewandowski and Raphinha. La Liga top scorer Lewandowski increased his haul to 19 for the season with a first-touch shot from inside the box assisted by Jules Kounde in the 36th minute.

Raphinha had to wait a couple of minutes to celebrate scoring Barca's third as the assistant referee had initially ruled out his effort for offside before the decision was overturned following a VAR replay. "It's always fine to score and assist, but I think I can always do better," Raphinha told Movistar Plus. "The last game was very tough, we needed to respond, and winning by a large margin was important to have more confidence.

"(Manager) Xavi (Hernandez) warned us and we know what we can do and what we lacked against Rayo. We needed a little more attitude, needed to stay with the ball, and if we want to win the league it has to be like that in every game."

Barca took their foot off the pedal after the break, comfortable with seeing out the game, but managed to extend their lead thanks to an own-goal by defender Guido Rodriguez, who scored while trying to clear an Ansu Fati cross in the six-yard-box.

With the win secured, 15-year-old winger Lamine Yamal became Barca's youngest-ever debutant when he was brought off the bench by coach Xavi.

La Liga: Aged 15 years and nine months, Lamine Yamal becomes YOUNGEST player ever to debut for Barcelona

Girona striker Taty Castellanos hit an incredible four goals as his side thrashed champions Real Madrid 4-2 in La Liga on Tuesday, helping leaders Barcelona edge closer to the trophy.

Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid are 11 points behind Barcelona having played one extra match, with this defeat virtually killing any hope they had remaining of defending the title.

Fourth-place Real Sociedad earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Real Betis to frustrate the Andalusians, fifth, ensuring a six-point gap remains between them.

Girona's Castellanos was left in tears after missing a big chance against Barcelona earlier in April in a goalless draw, but made amends in spectacular fashion at Montilivi against Madrid.&nbsp;

The Argentine striker, on loan at Girona from New York City FC -- owned by the City group -- exposed gaps in Madrid's defence ahead of their Champions League semi-final tie against Manchester City in May.

Castellanos shut down his social media accounts after his bad night in front of goal at Camp Nou, but thanked those close to him for their support.

"It was a dream night, we had a great game against one of the best teams in the world, it was a dream night," Castellanos said.

"I never imagined this, (I'm) enjoying it with our fans, with the people who have sent me support -- my family, people in Argentina, they are always supporting me and that's fundamental."

In April 2022 Castellanos hit four goals for New York City against Real Salt Lake and repeated the trick a little over a year later.

"Obviously they are different days, it was a dream to score against Madrid and to score four -- you can't even imagine it," he added.

"I'm very happy for everything, for the fans, for the lads."

Castellanos now has 11 goals in La Liga this season in 29 appearances.

Ancelotti had said his team needed to stay in a positive winning dynamic in the league to stay at the top of their game in Europe, but badly took their eye off the ball in Girona.

"A tough night, yes, when you lose a game like that it's a tough night," said the Italian.

"On a defensive level it was a bad game, and that was the key to the match... the individual level was lower than normal too.

"Everybody's was, not just some people. The level was very low, because the defensive aspect, which was very good in recent games, today, we have forgotten."

<h2>Absentees</h2>

Ancelotti was hampered by striker Karim Benzema taking a knock in the win over Celta Vigo at the weekend, while goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois did not travel because of a stomach problem among other absentees.

Former Madrid defender Miguel Gutierrez set up the opening goal with a cross for Castellanos, which he headed home from six yards out after 12 minutes.

Castellanos doubled Girona's lead after 24 minutes when he got in behind Eder Militao and blasted through Andriy Lunin's legs.

Vinicius Junior pulled one back for Real Madrid with a header from Marco Asensio's fine inswinging cross, giving them hope of a second half comeback.

However Castellanos netted his third just 36 seconds after the interval after a fine run and cross from Yan Couto.

The striker pounced again after 62 minutes, again capitalising on a Militao mistake to net his and Girona's fourth.

Lucas Vazquez pulled another back for Madrid late on after more good work by Vinicius, but it was too little, too late.

<h2>Sociedad hold firm</h2>

Real Sociedad dug deep to clinch a goalless draw with Real Betis, to tighten their grip on Champions League qualification for next season.

It was a game of few clear chances, but Sergio Canales could have fired Betis in front after 74 minutes, firing inches over after good work by Juan Miranda.

Rui Silva saved well from Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino's drive deep into stoppage time at the other end.

Betis had the better of the second half but could not find the winner their fans craved and next travel to champions-in-waiting Barcelona on Saturday.

Osasuna beat Cadiz 1-0 thanks to Ruben Garcia's long-range goal, although they had winger Ez Abde sent off late on, minutes after coming off the bench.

"I never imagined this, (I'm) enjoying it with our fans, with the people who have sent me support -- my family, people in Argentina, they are always supporting me and that's fundamental." La Liga: Castellanos hits four as Girona beat Real Madrid 4-2

Ferran Torres's strike helped Barcelona emerge from a recent slump to earn a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday in La Liga, taking a big step towards clinching their first title since 2019.

Sevilla, fresh from thrashing Manchester United in the Europa League, snatched a late winner to beat high-flying Villarreal 2-1, with Youssef En-Nesyri heading home in stoppage time.

After two consecutive goalless draws for Barca, second-place Real Madrid cut into their lead by beating Celta Vigo on Saturday, but Torres's low first-half finish restored their advantage to 11 points with eight games remaining.

Diego Simeone's Atletico, third, arrived as Spain's most in-form side but Torres stroked home from the edge of the box in the 44th minute to secure victory for Xavi Hernandez's side.

Both sides had clear chances to score in the second half but Barcelona held on to their lead to inflict Atletico's first defeat since these sides met in January at the Metropolitano.

The hosts recorded a 23rd clean sheet of the season in La Liga, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen making a fine save to deny Antoine Griezmann an equaliser.

"I've always said Marc is among the top three goalkeepers in the world, and for our game, I think he's the best," Xavi told reporters.

"He's a guarantee, our defence too -- defensive work is fundamental and Marc has been decisive at various moments."

Xavi brought Frenkie de Jong back into the starting line-up after injury, but Pedri had to make do with a seat on the bench after his two-month absence.&nbsp;

Griezmann almost struck immediately against his former side, rattling the crossbar with a fine effort from distance within the first minute.&nbsp;

Barcelona broke the deadlock just before the interval, with Raphinha controlling a long ball and crossing to Torres on the edge of the box, who swept the ball home past Jan Oblak.

It was Barcelona's first goal since Torres' strike against Elche on April 1, ending a painful run of three games without finding the net.

<h2>End-to-end</h2>

Barcelona brought on Pedri to roars from the Camp Nou in the second half.

Gavi and Raphinha both mishit efforts from point-blank range in the space of a few seconds that should have put the game out of reach, before Ter Stegen palmed away Griezmann's cunning flick.

"It's a fact that being decisive makes you champions -- if you're strong in both boxes, you have a much bigger chance of being champions," said Simeone.

Barcelona had another golden opportunity to score a second but Robert Lewandowski selfishly shot wide from distance as he and Raphinha ran through on goal.

A simple pass would have left the Brazilian with an open goal, but desperate to improve his poor goalscoring form in 2023 -- he only has four league goals since the turn of the year -- Lewandowski went alone and scuffed his effort wide.

"Ferran is the happiest man in the world; Raphinha and Lewandowski are a bit sad," Xavi added.

"Happy because the team has won, but sad because they have not scored. Lewandowski is the top scorer with 17 goals -- imagine how all the others feel."

The Polish striker was not punished for his profligacy as Barcelona survived a late handball appeal against Sergio Busquets to triumph. &nbsp;

<h2>Sevilla secure</h2>

After knocking Premier League giants Man United out of the Europa League in midweek, Sevilla produced another impressive victory against Villarreal, sixth.

Since coach Jose Luis Mendilibar arrived the Andalusians are unbeaten in six games and far more solid than under his predecessor Jorge Sampaoli, climbing to 12th, eight points above the bottom three.

Rafa Mir slammed Mendilibar's revived side ahead in the first half but Villarreal defender Pau Torres pegged them back from close range.

Jesus Navas came close to a winner for Sevilla with a low drive which whistled past the post, before En-Nesyri, who netted twice against United, sent the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan into raptures again in the 94th minute.

Valencia earned a comfortable 2-0 win on the road against bottom-of-the-table Elche, but remain in the relegation zone, 18th, as they have a worse head-to-head record with Almeria in 17th.

Getafe's 3-1 defeat by Mallorca leaves the Madrid side 16th, just a point above Almeria and Valencia.

La Liga: Barcelona beat Atletico 1-0, Sevilla stun Villarreal

Marco Asensio and Eder Militao struck for Real Madrid in a comfortable 2-0 win over Celta Vigo in La Liga on Saturday, bringing the champions within eight points of leaders Barcelona.

Although Madrid's hopes of overhauling Xavi Hernandez's side are slim at best, coach Carlo Ancelotti insisted his team needed to keep winning their league games to stay in a good dynamic.

Los Blancos face Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final in May, ahead of their Champions League semi-final clashes against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

With Barcelona in action against Atletico Madrid on Sunday, Madrid applied pressure on their Catalan rivals with an easy win over Celta at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The first half was quiet before Asensio sent Madrid ahead in the 43rd minute, with Militao heading home early in the second half to double the lead.

"We'll fight until the last game, while it's mathematically possible," Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois told DAZN.

"We have to try and win the next three games and then when we play the Copa final, see how many points off we are, and if there's a chance.

"Our job is to keep winning, and not just to cut the distance but for good sensations before the Champions League."

Ancelotti made five changes from the midweek Champions League victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, resting veterans Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

The coach did start Benzema, who was upset to come off against Chelsea, but the French forward had a quiet night.

Instead it was Asensio who drew the focus, converting with a scruffy but ultimately effective finish from Vinicius Junior's cut-back.

Asensio now has five goals in his last 10 appearances for Madrid across all competitions, with several of those being as a substitute.

"Now the coach is giving me his trust and I'm taking advantage of the minutes, and I hope to keep it going because where I enjoy myself is on the pitch," Asensio told DAZN.

The Spanish forward also took the corner which Militao rose highest to head home in the 48th minute, putting the game beyond a Celta side which Madrid largely kept at arm's length.

<h2>Impressive Camavinga</h2>

Eduardo Camavinga, thriving in his left-back role, was arguably Madrid's best player and frequently drew applause from the Bernabeu for his convincing and occasionally tenacious performance.

"He's got energy, he's a complete player," said Ancelotti.

"As a complete player, he can play in any position with success."

Ancelotti's side completed their assignment and ensured that if Barcelona -- who have drawn their last two league games -- continue to stumble, they will be in a position to capitalise.

Perhaps more importantly for the Italian coach, they kept a fourth consecutive clean sheet across all competitions.

With Manchester City and free-scoring striker Erling Haaland on the horizon, this newfound defensive solidity could be particularly useful.

"I think lately we've been in a great run defensively," said Courtois.

"Today wasn't a great game on our part, we gave the ball away a lot but it's a victory, and we keep moving forward."

<h2>Sociedad strengthen grip</h2>

Real Sociedad took an important step towards securing Champions League football next season, coming from behind to beat Rayo Vallecano 2-1.

After fifth-placed Real Betis lost 3-2 at Osasuna earlier on, Imanol Alguacil's side moved six points clear of the Andalucians, tightening their grip on fourth.

Isi Palazon sent Rayo ahead early in the second half after robbing Jon Pacheco in the centre circle, driving into space and firing home.

However Alexander Sorloth headed home two minutes later to level from Aihen Munoz's cross, and Real Sociedad found the winner in similar fashion.

Munoz whipped a ball into the box, which substitute Carlos Fernandez got his head to, with his effort bouncing off Rayo defender Florian Lejeune into his own net.

Ante Budimir hit two goals inside the first 11 minutes to help Osasuna beat Betis and dent their ambitions of a top four finish.

"There are 24 points to play for, we'll keep playing," said Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini.

"We still hope to reach the Champions League."

La Liga: Real Madrid ease to 2-0 win over Celta Vigo in fading title challenge; Asensio, Militão on target

Barcelona have never "done anything" to "obtain some type of sporting advantage," the club's president Joan Laporta said on Monday amid investigations into payments made to a former refereeing chief. Last month Spanish prosecutors charged the Catalan club with corruption after payments of more than 7.3 million euros ($7.8 million) to a company owned by a former refereeing chief were uncovered earlier this year.

Barcelona say they paid Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former referee and ex-vice president of the refereeing committee of the Spanish football federation (CTA) between 1994 and 2018, for reports and advice related to refereeing.

The club "has never done anything with the goal or intention of altering the competition to achieve some type of sporting advantage," Laporta told a news conference called to discuss the affair.

The allegations of wrongdoing are part of a "smear campaign" against the Catalan side who are currently top of La Liga, he added.

As well as the club and Enriquez Negreira, two of the club's former presidents, Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, are facing the same charge of corruption.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has said Spanish football is enduring its "worst" ever moment because of the refereeing corruption case involving Barcelona.

"The reputation of our football is at stake. I am ashamed. We have no explanation from Barcelona," he added last month.

Xavi's Barcelona play yet another goalless draw in La Liga

A subdued Barcelona were held to a 0-0 draw at Getafe on Sunday, leaving them 11 points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. Champions Madrid beat Cadiz on Saturday to cut back Barcelona's lead, and with nine games remaining it seems highly unlikely they will catch Barcelona -- but Xavi Hernandez's side are limping over the line.

Barcelona drew 0-0 at home against Girona on Monday and followed that up with a second consecutive bore draw, the team still wallowing after their Copa del Rey semi-final thrashing by Madrid earlier in April.

The one positive for Barca was a 22nd clean sheet of the season in the top flight, with Getafe, 15th, not creating much danger.

After a slow start, the Catalans created the first clear chance at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, when Raphinha raced on to a long ball and fired against the post.

The rebound fell to Balde, but with the goal gaping, mishit an effort which struck the same upright.

The Getafe goalkeeper was again called into action early in the second half, making a fine stop from Franck Kessie, although the flag was raised for offside.

Lewandowski nodded narrowly wide from an Alba cross before Soria made another solid stop from a rasping Raphinha effort.

Getafe were content with the draw, sitting back as Barcelona probed for a breakthrough, although Borja Mayoral almost snatched a winner for the hosts on the break.

Ronald Araujo failed to clear the ball in his box and former Real Madrid striker Mayoral controlled the loose ball but slashed an effort wide.

Barcelona are still firm favourites to lift the title for the first time since 2019, but should they drop more points at home against Atletico Madrid next weekend, doubts could creep in.

The one positive for Barca was a 22nd clean sheet of the season in the top flight, with Getafe, 15th, not creating much danger. La Liga: Barcelona maintain 11-point lead at the top after goalless draw against Getafe

Barcelona on Monday called on La Liga president Javier Tebas to quit over "false" accusations allegedly made by him concerning their referee corruption case.

The Spanish giants made the demand after a newspaper claimed Tebas had written to the Spanish public prosecutor accusing two former Barca presidents of wrongdoing.

Last month the Catalan club was charged with corruption after payments of more than 7.3 million euros ($7.8 million) to a company owned by a former refereeing chief were uncovered.

In a statement following La Vanguardia's report Barcelona claimed Tebas "presented false proof" to the public prosecutor "to incriminate our club".

"FC Barcelona wants to express its deep anger, indignation and disgust," the statement read.

It went on to demand that Tebas "appears in public to provide answers", adding "for the dignity and respect of the presidency of La Liga Mr Tebas should resign".

Tebas in response denied "accusing anyone" in a post on social media.

Last month the club said they paid Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former referee and ex-vice president of the refereeing committee of the Spanish football federation (CTA) between 1994 and 2018, for reports and advice related to refereeing.

In Monday's statement a bruised Barcelona claimed they were the victims "of a media lynching for something that never happened - Barca have never bought off referees".

As well as the club and Enriquez Negreira, two of the club's former presidents, Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, are facing the same charge of corruption.

Barcelona calls on La Liga president Javier Tebas to quit over corruption saga

Barcelona have publicly demanded that La Liga President Javier Tebas step down from his position. Tebas has been accused of providing false evidence against Barca to prosecutors in the Negreira case.

Barcelona call for La Liga Chief Javier Tebas resignation

European football's governing body UEFA said on Thursday it was launching an investigation into claims Barcelona paid for favourable refereeing decisions. UEFA said its ethics and disciplinary inspectors would probe "a potential violation of UEFA's legal framework by FC Barcelona in connection with the so-called 'Caso Negreira'", referring to the Spanish league's former refereeing chief Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

Barcelona have already been charged with corruption by Spanish prosecutors for payments between 2001 and 2018 to a company owned by Negreira, totalling around 7.3 million euros ($7.95 million). The club say they were paying for reports and advice on refereeing but prosecutors have accused the club of seeking to gain favourable decision-making from officials.

Charges were filed earlier this month against the club, Negreira and two former Barcelona presidents, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, among others. Negreira, a former referee, was the vice president of the refereeing committee of the Spanish football federation between 1994 and 2018.

The investigation began after Spain's tax authorities identified irregularities in tax payments made between 2016 and 2018 by the company Dasnil 95, owned by Negreira.

Dasnil 95 reportedly received payments from Barcelona between those years. The last invoice was issued in June 2018. After that the refereeing committee was restructured and Negreira left the organisation. Joan Laporta, the current Barcelona president, has insisted his club is innocent.

"Let it be clear Barca have never bought referees and Barca have never had the intention of buying referees, absolutely never," he said.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has previously said Barcelona faced no immediate danger because the governing bodies of Spanish, European and world football all have five-year statutes of limitations. On the criminal level, the accused could face up to four years in prison. The case has caused tensions between Barcelona and old rivals Real Madrid, with the latter's president, Florentino Perez, not travelling to the Camp Nou for last weekend's Clasico, which was won by the Catalans.

Real Madrid have confirmed they will appear in the case as an "injured party" to defend their interests. Relations between the two rival clubs seemed to be improving of late, as they looked to launch a European Super League project together in 2021 and remain set on the idea.

Barcelona referee scandal: UEFA to launch probe for potential violation of legal framework

Argentine Jorge Sampaoli was sacked and replaced by Jose Luis Mendilibar as coach of struggling Sevilla on Tuesday, with the club just off the La Liga relegation zone. The side are 14th in the Spanish top flight but just two points above Valencia in 18th, the first relegation place. Mendilibar's first game in charge of the six-time Europa League winners will be on April 1, after the international break, with a trip to Cadiz, who are one spot below Sevilla in the table on goal difference.

La Liga: Struggling Sevilla replace sacked Jorge Sampaoli with Jose Luis Mendilibar after poor run

Barcelona&nbsp;snatched a 2-1 Clasico win over Real Madrid with Franck Kessie's late goal Sunday to move 12 points clear at the top of La Liga.

The victory dents Madrid's ambitions of retaining the title and leaves the Catalans close to lifting the trophy for the first time since 2019.

Carlo Ancelotti's Real took the lead through a Ronald Araujo own goal but&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;pulled level when Sergi Roberto tucked home just before half-time.

Both sides had chances to win the game and Marco Asensio struck for Madrid, but the goal was ruled offside by VAR, before Alejandro Balde set up Kessie in the 92nd minute.

"We came from a Marco Asensio goal that we didn't know was offside and from losing, we scored Franck's goal, and the truth is it tastes a bit better, winning like that in the last minute," Sergi Roberto told Movistar.

"There are a lot of games left and you can never give Madrid up for dead. 12 points is a tricky distance to have to go, but it's up to us, and that is good."

The build-up to the match was overshadowed by&nbsp;Barcelona's corruption charge in the "Caso Negreira" refereeing scandal.

Madrid joined Spanish prosecutors' complaint against&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;last week and their president Florentino Perez snubbed the game for the first time in over 20 years, amid rising tensions between the two Spanish giants.

That fed the match's intensity, both on and off the pitch, in Xavi's sixth Clasico as&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;coach but only his first at Camp Nou.

Xavi asked fans to make the stadium a pressure cooker and they responded, selling it out, whistling Madrid in possession and conjuring one of the best atmospheres of the season.

Madrid did not manage a single shot on target in their Copa del Rey semi-final first leg defeat by&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;earlier in March, but Karim Benzema stung Marc-Andre ter Stegen's palms inside the first minute.

Robert Lewandowski responded at the other end by testing Thibaut Courtois as the veteran marksmen exchanged shots.

When&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;conceded the opening goal of the game, it was friendly fire. Araujo deflected Vinicius' cross in at the near post, with Ter Stegen helpless.

Araujo, playing at right-back to counteract the Brazilian, has enjoyed his duels with Vinicius in the past but this time the winger triumphed, albeit fortuitously. &nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;supporters became enraged by his emphatic celebration in front of them.

It was the first goal from open play&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;have conceded at Camp Nou in La Liga all season long, and only the second strike at home and ninth overall.

<h2>Comeback charge</h2>

Barcelona&nbsp;complained defender Nacho, already booked, should have been sent off for a hand-off on Raphinha.

The hosts did not get their wish, but were building up steam and found the breakthrough just before half-time, from an unlikely source.

Selected in place of injured midfielder Pedri, Sergi Roberto was in the right place at the right time to control a loose ball in the box and arc it beyond Courtois.

Barcelona&nbsp;had significantly more possession than in their cup win over Madrid and significantly more chances.

Lewandowski sent a deflected piledriver narrowly wide as Madrid wobbled, prompting Carlo Ancelotti to roll the dice and bring on Rodrygo and Ferland Mendy.

It almost paid instant dividends as Madrid robbed Sergio Busquets and Rodrygo lashed inches over the bar.

Madrid substitute Asensio fired home what might have been the winner but the goal was ruled out for offside after a nervy wait for VAR instruction.

Barcelona&nbsp;seemed content with the draw but Kessie's last-gasp strike sparked wild celebrations at Camp Nou.

Asked if Madrid's hopes of defending the title were over, Courtois told Movistar: "Yes, we have to be honest, we will keep fighting until the end but it's (12 points) now, we have the better head-to-head, but they have to lose four games and we have to win them all.

"Nothing is impossible but it's very difficult."

La Liga: Barcelona take El Clasico 2-1, dent Real Madrid's chances of defending title

The La Liga title race could have a pivotal week in the title race as top of the table Barcelona host Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday, March 19. Separated by just nine points, the two arch-rivals will contest their fourth El Clasico of the season with the clash on Sunday having bearings on Real’s treble aspirations. While a win for Real will see them reduce the gap to just six points, a win for Barcelona in their own backyard could close the title race.

<h3>What is up for grabs in fourth El Clasico of season?</h3>

As things stand, Barcelona lead Real 2-1 from their three El Clasico’s from earlier in the season having won the Copa del Rey first leg 1-0 last month while also winning the Spanish Super Cup 3-1 in Riyadh. Real’s only win of the season came in the reverse La Liga clash and will look to go on parity with a win on Sunday. A win for Barcelona with 12 games to go after the current leg will see them gain upper hand and could see them lift the La Liga title for the first time since 2019.

<h3>Xavi’s side in form</h3>

Xavi's side has the best defense in entire Europe in the top five leagues as they have conceded only eight goals with Marc Andre ter Stegen keeping 20 clean sheets this season. A draw on Sunday will see the La Liga leaders stay at the top with nine points while the Los Blancos struggle to find a way domestically.

On the horizon, Real have a score to settle with the Blaugrana as they are set to meet them on one more occasion after Sunday. After the latest El Clasico clash, Real will also meet Barca in the return leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal at the same venue in the first week of April.

Even though the Los Blancos sit at the second position they still have to cover a huge gap. They currently have 56 points and are nine points behind the league leaders. Even without some of their key players like Pedri, Xavi's Barcelona are more than capable to produce 3 points.

The clash will also be the last La Liga game before the first international break of 2023 with players departing for different parts of the world.

Separated by just nine points, the two arch-rivals will contest their fourth El Clasico of the season with the clash on Sunday having bearings on Real’s treble aspirations. While a win for Real will see them reduce the gap to just six points, a win for Barcelona in their own backyard could close the title race. What is up for grabs in fourth El Clasico of season? As things stand, Barcelona lead Real 2-1 from their three El Clasico’s from earlier in the season having won the Copa del Rey first leg 1-0 last month while also winning the Spanish Super Cup 3-1 in Riyadh. Real’s only win of the season came in the reverse La Liga clash and will look to go on parity with a win on Sunday. A win for Barcelona with 12 games to go after the current leg will see them gain upper hand and could see them lift the La Liga title for the first time since 2019. Xavi’s side in form Xavi's side has the best defense in entire Europe in the top five leagues as they have conceded only eight goals with Marc Andre ter Stegen keeping 20 clean sheets this season. A draw on Sunday will see the La Liga leaders stay at the top with nine points while the Los Blancos struggle to find a way domestically. La Liga: Barcelona to close title race or will Real Madrid turn screws in high-voltage El Clásico? | Preview

The last nine years in European football have been taken by storm by Spanish giants Real Madrid as they have conquered the continental scene left, right and center. Masterminded by some of the greats of the game the Los Blancos have been recipients of 14 European titles, five of which have come since 2014. While European glory is no new to the team, it is their lack of domestic silverware at the domestic circuit that has surprised many with their last Copa del Rey title coming days before they started their latest golden chapter of European success.

<h3>Real’s European success</h3>

The shades of success for the latest glory days took 11 years of hunting before Iker Casillas in 2014 finally lifted the holy grail of the Champions League in 2014. Not since 2003 the Galacticos of Real conquered Europe while arch-rivals Barcelona were donning the La Liga and Champions League. A team furniture consisting of Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric took the 2014 season by storm and ended the wait for European success for the Whites of Madrid.

While 2014 may have started a period of European success, remarkably the Los Blancos have not lifted the domestic Copa del Rey. A halfway run in the 85th minute of the 2014 showdown final from Bale secured Real’s last Copa del Rey, beating Barcelona in the final. In context, it is the same period in which Arsenal won four FA Cup titles while Leicester City too have a domestic cup in their trophy cabinet having won the 2021 FA Cup.

When it comes to La Liga, Real have achieved success on three occasions since 2014 which while comparing their standards with other European giants has been way off. Since 2014, Barcelona have won four La Liga titles despite going through a period of transition and are likely to add a fifth at the end of the 2022-23 season.

English powerhouse Manchester City have won five PL titles and Bayern Munich have conquered the German Bundesliga on nine occasions. Juventus also have huge domestic success with a staggering seven titles with PSG conquering the same number of titles in their domestic French Ligue One. The afar mentioned teams have won 28 league titles between them while Bayern Munich remain the only side to have won the Champions League since 2014.

Considering, success at the domestic level Europe is supposed to be a big hard-hitting rock for many teams considering the two-legged affairs and the away-goals rule. Often big teams have been on the receiving end of the cruel away-goals rule, but Real have experimented and found the solution to overcome that drawback.

<h3>Core of team</h3>

In 2013 before the start of the golden modern era, Luka Modric was termed the worse signing of the season having marched his trade from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012. In 2014 Bayern Munich sold Toni Kroos in favour of Thiago Alcantara and surplus to requirements as the management believed he will not last long at the highest level. However, critics have been proven wrong in both Modric and Kroos’ cases as they to the day of writing have masterminded Real’s success and carry the burden of expectations of the fans.

Termed BBC (Bale-Benzema-Cristiano), the trio became the most decorated in the modern era of football as they scored goals for fun. Both Benzema and Bale were part of a successful era that not many teams across Europe had at their disposal. While City had Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure, Real’s striking dimensions were better than that of many. It took Bayern a long time to win the Champions League with Robert Lewandowski and his star-studded teammates. So, it was just the extra bandwidth in the striking department that saw Los Blancos make the difference.

Their defense was led by the talisman Sergio Ramos and Marcelo; it was their big winning experience that made the difference. The 2014 Champions League final is a good example of when they were struggling but found a way. They later had the services of Raphael Varane and Dani Carvajal who brought a core of success that was missing in the big teams like Juventus, Bayern and Paris Saint-German.

<h3>Ancelotti, Zidane’s reign of success</h3>

A good horse with a poor jockey is not the mantra to success, but Real had the formulae for success in the form of experienced Carlo Ancelotti in 2014 and 2022. While the Italian was far and away enjoying spells with Napoli and Everton having won the Champions League, boss Florentino Pérez did not have to look far.

An ill-fated short reign of Rafael Benitez was a dark cloud, Zinedine Zidane’s tenure saw history scripted on all fronts. He led Real to three consecutive Champions League titles while also gaining the tag of becoming the first team in the modern era to win back-to-back titles in Europe’s premier competition.

While the icing is already on the cake, another success in the Champions League in the 2022-23 season will be the cherry on the top more glory awaits for the record champions.

Explained: Why Real Madrid are the most successful European club despite domestic cup drought in recent years

Spanish prosecutors on Friday charged Barcelona with corruption over payments the club made to a former vice-president of Spain's referees' committee through a company owned by him. According to the prosecution, the Catalan club paid a total of more than 7.3 million euros to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, former referee and ex-vice president of the refereeing committee of the Spanish football federation between 1994 and 2018.

Two of the club's former presidents, Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, as well as Enriquez Negreira are facing the same charge, originating from the Barcelona prosecutor's office. Enriquez Negreira was allegedly paid for providing the club with advice on topics relating to referees.

"FC Barcelona obtained and maintained a strictly confidential verbal agreement with Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira so that, in his capacity as vice-president of the Technical Arbitral Committee (CTA) and in exchange for money, the latter carries out actions tending to benefit FC Barcelona in decisions by the referees," explained the Barcelona public prosecutor's office.

The investigation began after Spain's tax authorities identified irregularities in tax payments made between 2016 and 2018 by the company Dasnil 95 -- owned by Enriquez Negreira. Dasnil 95 reportedly received payments from Barcelona between those years. The last invoice, according to Cadena Ser radio, was issued in June 2018. After that the CTA was restructured and Enriquez Negreira left the organisation.

This week, current Barca boss Joan Laporta insisted his club had never "bought referees". Reports claim the Catalan side paid 6.5 million euros ($6.9 million) between 2001 and 2018 to Enriquez Negreira's firm.

"Let it be clear Barca have never bought referees and Barca have never had the intention of buying referees, absolutely never," said Laporta on Tuesday.

Barcelona says Dasnil 95 was paid to advise the club on refereeing matters. But the prosecutors suspect the money could have been used to corrupt game officials. On the sporting level, Barcelona face no immediate danger because the governing bodies of Spanish, European and world football have five-year statute of limitations, Liga president Javier Tebas has said. On the criminal level, the accused could face up to four years in prison.

"The problem concerns us because it harms Spanish football and sport," Spanish Culture and Sports Minister Miquel Iceta said on Tuesday.

Sanctions against the club could range from 'suspension of activity...to&nbsp; outright dissolution' as a company," Alberto Palomar, professor of law at Carlos III University of Madrid told AFP. The case has cast a shadow over Spain's refereeing body, which last week demanded that a single person's alleged actions not "tarnish" the "image" and "honour" of all referees.

Barcelona wasted a golden opportunity to extend their lead at the top of LaLiga as they were shocked 1-0 at lowly Almeria on Sunday thanks to a first-half strike by El Bilal Toure. Barcelona are top of the league standings on 59 points, seven ahead second-placed Real Madrid who were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Atletico Madrid on Saturday. Almeria are 15th on 25 points, two clear of the relegation zone.

Almeria halted Barca's seven game winning streak in the league and delivered another blow to the Catalans who, after going unbeaten in 18 matches in all competitions, have now lost two straight matches after being knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday.

The hosts were the better side in the first half and scored after 24 minutes when Luis Suarez sent a perfect long pass to Toure who was ghosting behind Barca's defence. The Malian striker ran towards the area and hit a thunderous strike in off the crossbar. It was only the eighth goal Barcelona have conceded in LaLiga this season, the least of any team in the top five leagues in Europe.

Almeria should have extended their lead but Leo Baptistao's strike was blocked by goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. Rodrigo Ely then missed a sitter from close-range, sending wide a header from a corner when he was all alone in the area.

How am I going to think that of a club as big as Barcelona and their history, which has given a lot both to my family and Leo?" he said. "For us, Catalonia is our second home and that is well known. I'm very sorry and I apologise to everyone, especially the Barcelona fans.” WATCH | Gravitas Plus | Argentina's New Messiah: The World is swept away by Messi-Mania × Matias, in his tirade, had blamed Barcelona president Joan Laporta for his brother's unceremonious exit from the club. Messi's brother issues an apology after tirade against Barcelona and Joan Laporta

After the verbal deal between Real Madrid and Kylian Mbappe fell apart just before the start of this season, it looked like this marriage is probably over for ever. However, new&nbsp;reports emerging suggest something different. As per Sportbible, there is chance that Real Madrid might chase the Paris Saint-German&nbsp;(PSG) striker all over again next summer, and for that they might just&nbsp;splurge as huge as £1 billion for the deal to go ahead.

Although no one related to either camps have made any comment or announcement on the same, if this deal goes through, it&nbsp;will be the biggest-ever transfer in the history of football. As per the report, Real Madrid will offer a sum of nearly&nbsp;£132 million while&nbsp;the overall package could be worth around £877 million. Kylian Mbappe&nbsp;will reportedly earn around £552 million in wages over a period of four years. Besides this, other add-ons and signing-on fees will be included in the deal.

Meanwhile, Mbappe rose to limelight following his last stint with AS&nbsp;Monaco in 2018 after which he joined PSG on a whopping transfer fee of&nbsp;€180 million. Since joining PSG, he not only helped his club retain the top spot in the league, with the national team that year also he also won his maiden World Cup in Russia.&nbsp;

Four years later in Qatar, Mbappe&nbsp;was amongst the best players as well, helping his team reach the summit clash&nbsp;against Argentina for the successive time. However, despite scoring&nbsp;a World Cup final hattrick, he couldn't help his team defend its title as Argentina won the match on penalties and lifted the trophy for the third time. For his magnificent performance throughout this edition, that included eight goals and two assists, he was also awarded with the Golden Boot.

This year amid all reports suggesting that he was unhappy at the club and was on a lookout, Mbappe signed a new contract with PSG where he is&nbsp;set to earn £547 million over the next three years, making him the highest-earning sportsperson of all time. This season in particular, he has 19 goals and five assists to his name in 20 matches played across all competitions.

Come next summer, we will see if Real Madrid still remain&nbsp;keen on signing the most sort-after striker in world football at the moment for a ground-breaking fee.

Real Madrid ready to pay £1 billion for Kylian Mbappe next summer - Reports

Real Madrid have reached an agreement to sign Brazilian teenager Endrick from Palmeiras, the teams announced on Thursday, beating a host of leading European clubs linked to the prodigy. The 16-year-old striker will join the European and LaLiga champions in July 2024, due to world soccer governing body FIFA's rules prohibiting underage players from playing abroad.

Real have reportedly trumped several top clubs - including Paris St-Germain, Chelsea, Barcelona, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United, who were chasing the young prospect.

Palmeiras and Real did not provide any details of the deal but Brazilian media group Globo said the transfer would be worth 70 million euros ($74.88 million), the second biggest in the history of the Brazilian championship only behind the reported 88 million euros Barcelona paid for Neymar in 2013.

"I want to thank Palmeiras for offering me everything necessary to become what I am today, for helping me to accomplish several of my dreams and for respecting my desire and that of my family to make another dream come true," Endrick said in an official statement published on the Palmeiras website.

"Until I join Real Madrid, I will continue to dedicate myself as I always have in order to offer Palmeiras even more on the field: more goals, more victories, more titles and even more joy for our fans."

Real said Endrick will visit the club's facilities in Spain next week. His compatriots Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo were also signed from Brazil when they were under 18. A stand-out talent from a young age, Endrick scored 170 goals in 176 matches for Palmeiras' academy.

Endrick, who has been at the club since 2017, was Palmeiras' youngest ever debutant at 16 years two months and 15 days before becoming their youngest ever scorer less than a month later. He is the only player to ever be crowned a champion in all the club's age groups - Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-20 and at the professional level.

"I know there's a lot of pressure, a lot of criticism, this is Barca," Xavi told a press conference on Saturday.

The day that I'm not sure (of myself), I will leave. I will not be a problem for Barcelona, the day I see I am not a solution." Xavi's side, La Liga leaders, face champions Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, where they won 4-0 last season. "It's a vital game for us, and for Madrid too, let's see who comes out of it as leaders," said Xavi. "I think (our) project is under construction. The debacle in Europe is sad, but we are on a good path. We are having a splendid season in La Liga. Karim Benzema missed a penalty for Real Madrid as they finally blinked in the La Liga title race, dropping their first points of the season in a 1-1 draw with Osasuna on Sunday.

Elsewhere Real Sociedad won 5-3 at Girona and high-flying Real Betis fell to a 1-0 defeat at Celta Vigo. After Barcelona beat Real Mallorca on Saturday, Madrid knew they had to win to stay top but were frustrated by Jagoba Arrasate's well-organised side at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Benzema, on his return to the side after injury, won a spot-kick but then fired it against the crossbar, and also had a goal disallowed for offside as Madrid tried to force a way through.

Vinicius Junior broke the deadlock just before half-time with a cross that snuck all the way into the far corner, but Kike Garcia's well-taken header early in the second period earned Osasuna a point.

"What we were missing was scoring that penalty, normally Karim scores them," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti told DAZN.

"He had no problem playing the 90 minutes. It's been a month since he's played, he has to get his best form back. He did his part, he had the chance from the penalty. It's an accident, sometimes it happens."

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez told the club's fans at an assembly on Sunday morning that a European Super League project was essential, but Osasuna showed domestic football can still offer a significant challenge. Benzema made his first appearance since September 6, while Andriy Lunin and Dani Ceballos started in place of injured duo Thibaut Courtois and Luka Modric.

Madrid probed promisingly down the flanks, while at the other end Abde Ezzalzouli, on loan at Osasuna from Barcelona, crashed a shot into the side netting on a bright display. Madrid opened the scoring in fortuitous fashion, with Vinicius whipping in a low cross which caught out goalkeeper Sergio Herrera and crept in at the far post.&nbsp;

Osasuna complained that Benzema and Antonio Rudiger were offside and interfering with play, but their protests were dismissed. The visitors were level five minutes into the second half, when Kike Garcia brilliantly looped a backwards header over Lunin. The goal meant Madrid have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the first seven league games.

"We were quite solid at the back," insisted Ancelotti. "We conceded a goal from a deep cross, it was quite strange. The team was balanced, the objective is always to be strong to avoid conceding."

Turning up the heat, Benzema drew a stunning save from Herrera, although he was offside, then neatly slipped through Rodrygo Goes, who fired over. The French striker won a penalty when he was shoved over by David Garcia, who was sent off, but hit the crossbar with his effort. Moments later Benzema had the ball in the net, but it was disallowed for offside.

The draw means Barcelona lead Madrid on goal difference after seven games, with both teams on 19 points and unbeaten. It is the first time the Catalans lead the league at the end of a fixture round since June 2020.

"We have to celebrate, they had won all their games and we came back from a goal down, the team did great work and played a great game," said Arrasate.

"If Madrid's players weren't offside then the goalkeeper's position would have been different (for the opening goal)."

Earlier Real Sociedad, seventh, came out on top after an eight-goal thriller at Montilivi.

Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth hit a first-half brace for the visitors either side of goals for Girona's Rodrigo Riquelme and Arnau Martinez. Valentin Castellanos put Girona ahead but Brais Mendez and Martin Zubimendi struck in the space of six minutes to restore the Basque side's lead.

Takefusa Kubo made the game safe for La Real late on. Real Betis fell to a narrow defeat at Celta Vigo, playing most of the game with 10 men after Luiz Felipe's 20th-minute red card.

Gabriel Veiga slammed home in the opening stages from distance for the hosts at Balaidos and they moved 10th while Betis remained fourth. Espanyol and Valencia shared a thrilling 2-2 draw which saw both sides reduced to 10 men after red cards for Martin Braithwaite and Marcos Andre respectively.

A clinical Real Madrid extended their perfect start to the LaLiga season when they beat city rivals Atletico 2-1 at the Metropolitano on Sunday.

Despite being second best for large periods of the first half, Carlo Ancelotti's side were ruthless in front of goal as strikes from Rodrygo and Federico Valverde put them in a commanding position. Mario Hermoso pulled a goal back for the hosts late on but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Victory means Real return to the top of the LaLiga table on 18 points from six games, two ahead of Barcelona in second. Atletico are seventh, eight points behind their neighbours.

"You're always very happy after winning the derby," Ancelotti said.&nbsp;

"We managed to double our lead and then defend really well. Our gameplan was to be solid at the back and to play direct with the ball between the lines.

"That's how we scored and we knew once we'd got 2-0 up that defending would be enough to get us over the line."

Atletico set up a grandstand finish through substitute Hermoso's header seven minutes from time following a rare mistake from Courtois who misjudged a cross, before the defender was sent off for a second bookable offence in injury time and Real held on to take the points.

LaLiga has raised&nbsp;Barcelona's spending limit by 800 million euros ($803 million), bringing it out of a spending deficit after the Catalan side sold off chunks of assets to patch up its finances, the Spanish league said.

Barcelona&nbsp;were given a cap of 96 million euros last year, which was slashed by January to minus 144 million euros - meaning the team had to find savings elsewhere to sign new players - after they ran up debts and future liabilities of 1.35 billion euros, with 673 million owed to banks.

Auba was recently cleared to fly to the United Kingdom to complete the formalities that come with joining a new club, including his medical. His personal terms are not expected to be a roadblock in completing this transfer.

However, it will be some time before the team gets the opportunity to train alongside the Gabon international as he is currently recovering from a minor fracture to his jaw, which he suffered during an attack on his home over the weekend. His recovery is well on track and he is expected to return to non-contact training in a week and full fitness in no more than three.
