Real Madrid have completed the formalities to sign Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain, according to French media reports and renowned transfer pundit, Fabrizio Romano. The news comes a day after Madrid won their record-extending 15th UEFA Champions League title.

Mbappe's transfer saga has been one of the most intriguing storylines in world football in the last few years. After much back-and-forth, Mbappe last month announced he was leaving Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a free transfer.

"Kylian Mbappé to Real Madrid, HERE WE GO! Every document has been signed, sealed and completed. Real Madrid, set to announce Mbappé as new signing next week after winning the Champions League," reported Romano.&nbsp;

"Mbappé made his decision in February; he can now be considered new Real player," he added.&nbsp;

Mbappe departs PSG on a free transfer, meaning the French club will lose huge money on a player for whom they rejected a over $200 million offer from Madrid in 2021. Mbappe departs PSG, having not secured a Champions League, and instead joins the record winners.

Mbappe's transfer saga has been one of the most intriguing storylines in world football in the last few years. After much back-and-forth, Mbappe last month announced he was leaving Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a free transfer. His next destination is most likely to be the Spanish capital but the comments regarding AC Milan have further stirred the pot. "When I was a kid, I was a fan of Milan, and I always said that if one day I come to Italy, I am going to play at Milan," Mbappe told Sky Sport Italia. "So we never know what can happen, but I always watch the Italian league - every game of Milan. Since I was a young kid, I was with a family close to mine, they are big Milan fans, and I was always there as a kid in their house to watch Milan's games. So now I keep watching the games, but we never know what can happen," he added. While a move to Milan appears a pipe dream at this stage, Milan fans would be happy that one of the biggest footballing stars on the planet prefers their club. "The only thing I can say is that I watch Serie A, it's a really good league and we see that next year, they're going to have many teams in the Champions League. They improve a lot, and I wish them good luck." Also read | Explained: The transfer saga of Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid and when the deal could materialise Mbappe to Real Madrid? Mbappe's contract with PSG expires on June 30 but according to FIFA rules, a player in the final six months of his club contract is free to negotiate with any other club. Multiple reports have claimed that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez had already sealed the deal with Mbappe in the last few months and only some formalities were left to be completed. Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti has refused to entertain questions regarding Mbappe's move to Bernabeu saying he can only talk about the current Madrid players. “Kylian Mbappe? I’m only going to comment on my players as they’re very, very good. Vinicius is improving every day, Jude Bellingham immediately understood what it means to be at Real Madrid.” Madrid are currently concentrating on the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, scheduled on June 1 at the Wembley in England. After the continental final, Mbappe's transfer to Madrid could be finalised. (With inputs from agencies)

Kylian Mbappe to AC Milan instead of Real Madrid? Star footballer gives MAJOR hint on his future

Barcelona ended the season with a 2-1 victory at Sevilla in LaLiga on Sunday, making departing coach Xavi Hernandez's farewell bittersweet after a trophy-less season in which they finished 10 points behind champions Real Madrid.

The final game for Xavi, who was sacked on Friday, leaves Barca second after a disappointing campaign in which they lost the Spanish Super Cup final to Real Madrid and were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris St Germain in the last eight.

"I don't think the work has been appreciated enough," said Xavi. "A double last year (LaLiga and Super Cup) and this year we haven't been up to the task because of details.

"I leave with some mixed feelings because the work is positive even though we didn't win the titles this season. I think we were on the right track and I still think so."

Barca came out all guns blazing from the start and took the lead in the 15th minute through Robert Lewandowski who scored his 19th league goal of the season from close range after latching onto Joao Cancelo's cross.

Sevilla levelled with Youssef En-Nesyri's strike in the 31st and went close again but failed to beat Marc-Andre ter Stegen before Barca got the winner on the hour through Fermin Lopez.

"Today is not the best time to talk about the future but we have a lot of good players," said Ter Stegen. "We have to work a lot more on an individual level to be able to compete with anyone next year.

"Xavi has always given us a lot. He worked every day so that we could succeed. On a personal level he's been a friend for many years and it's never easy to let him go," he added.

Kylian Mbappe confirmed on Friday that he will leave French champions Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, with Real Madrid widely expected to be his next destination.

The announcement brings an end to a prolific association with his hometown team, which began when he signed from Monaco in 2017 in a deal worth 180 million euros ($194 million).

"I wanted to announce to you all that it's my last year at Paris Saint-Germain. I will not extend and the adventure will come to an end in a few weeks," Mbappe, 25, said in a video posted on social media.

"I will play my last game at the Parc des Princes on Sunday."

Mbappe's arrival in the capital as a teenager in 2017 came after he had helped Monaco win the league title.

After initially joining PSG on loan, his transfer fee became -- and still is -- the second largest in football history.

It came just weeks after PSG paid a world-record 222 million euros to sign Neymar from Barcelona.

PSG have dominated French football since their 2011 Qatari takeover, but despite also adding Lionel Messi to their line-up for two seasons, European success has remained tantalisingly out of reach for a club that has spent billions on some of the world's best players.

The closest they came was the 2020 Champions League final defeat by Bayern Munich, when PSG academy graduate Kingsley Coman scored the winning goal against his former club.

The defeat to Dortmund this week ruled out the prospect of Mbappe facing his likely future employers, 14-time European champions Real Madrid, in this year's final.

Mbappe did not find the net in that tie but has scored 43 goals in all competitions this season, with 26 of those coming in Ligue 1.

The napkin upon which Lionel Messi signed his first-ever unofficial Barcelona contract is up for sale and the bidding has started at a whopping price of $275,000.

The napkin upon which Lionel Messi signed his first-ever unofficial Barcelona contract is up for sale and the bidding has started at a whopping price of $275,000. The world-famous napkin and its lore has been shared numerous times throughout the years but collectors now have the opportunity to get their hands on the extraordinary piece of history. London-based auction house Bonhams has started the bidding which will run until May 17. Experts are of the view that the napkin might fetch anywhere between $375,000 to $625,000. What is the story behind the napkin? Lionel Messi was born in 1987 into a working-class family in Rosario, about 300 kilometres north of Buenos Aires. Barcelona spotted Messi when he was just 13 and recognised that he had the qualities to become an all-timer. However, not everyone in the upper hierarchy of the club was convinced of signing an unknown South American kid. They kept dragging the deal, which made Messi's father impatient. On 14 December 2000, a fateful meeting occurred between Carles Rexach, Barca's sporting director, and agents Josep Minguella and Horacio Gaggioli at the Barcelona tennis club. Also read | Lionel Messi magic hits MLS as Inter Miami crush New York Red Bulls in marathon win Rexach confirmed the club's interest by reaching out for the napkin and writing on it with blue ink, what would become an iconic piece of football memorabilia. "In Barcelona, on December 14, 2000, and in the presence of the gentleman (the agent, Josep Maria) Minguella and Horacio (Gaggioli), Carles Rexach, technical secretary of FCB, commits under his responsibility, despite the opinion of others who are against signing Lionel Messi, as long as the agreed fees are maintained." Gaggioli held on the piece for almost 25 years until deciding to sell it. Messi's formal contract was drawn up later, but this napkin was the springboard to greatness for FC Barcelona. The signing of the contract changed not only the fortunes of Barcelona Football Club but also the footballing landscape as Messi would go on to sweep as many as eight Ballon d'Or's and win one of most memorable World Cups in recent memory. Also read | Lionel Messi called ‘possessed dwarf’ with the face of ‘devil’ by Monterrey coach Where is Messi currently? Messi is currently plying his trade in the Major League Soccer (MLS) where he is enjoying his football, away from the rigours of European football. However, the Argentine will be gearing up for the Copa America, scheduled to start next month where he will be defending his crown. Argentina won 2021 Copa America by beating Brazil at the Maracana, which would propel Messi to do the unthinkable on the world stage, two years later in Qatar. (With inputs from agencies)

Real Madrid have enjoyed&nbsp;yet&nbsp;another stellar season in European football as the Spanish giants are on course for yet another league and Champions League double. Last Saturday was a significant step towards the landmark after the Los Blancos secured their 36th La Liga title with a 3-0 win over Cadiz. However, the club has now confirmed that they won’t be lifting the La Liga title at the end of their next match against Granada in a fitting display of sportsmanship.&nbsp;

While much of the eyes are on the Wednesday (May 8) evening fixture against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, the Los Blancos travel to Granada on Saturday for their latest La Liga clash. Here is why Real Madrid won’t lift La Liga trophy after Granada match on weekend

Real Madrid clinched their 36th La Liga title after a win over Cadiz&nbsp;was coupled&nbsp;with a defeat for Barcelona against Girona on Saturday (May 4). Having won 3-0 against Cadiz, a&nbsp;4-2 defeat for Barcelona against Catalonian giants Girona meant that Real won La Liga title with four matches to spare in the season.&nbsp;This&nbsp;is the club’s second La Liga title under coach Carlo Ancelotti&nbsp;having&nbsp;also clinched the 2022 title under him. The win for Girona also assured their Champions League qualification for next season.

<h2>Real Madrid win La Liga&nbsp;title</h2>

Heading into Saturday, Real Madrid were on 84 points&nbsp;while&nbsp;Barcelona started the day on 73 points&nbsp;with&nbsp;both teams each playing 33 matches. Earlier in the day, goals from Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham and Joselu helped Real Madrid win 3-0 against Cadiz. Later in the day, despite leading&nbsp;twice&nbsp;Barcelona lost to Girona 4-2 at the home of their local rivals. The result meant Barcelona could&nbsp;now&nbsp;reach a maximum of 85 points while Girona&nbsp;in&nbsp;second place in La Liga&nbsp;also&nbsp;cannot breach the 87-point tally of Real Madrid as they can&nbsp;reach&nbsp;a maximum of 86 points (if they win all their four matches).&nbsp;

Real Madrid’s hunt&nbsp;however&nbsp;won’t end with La Liga as they are still in the running to win the Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;where they host Bayern Munich on Wednesday. With 36 La Liga titles&nbsp;the&nbsp;Los Blancos remain the most successful club in the history of the Spanish top flight.&nbsp;

(@realmadrid) May 4, 2024 × Real Madrid win La Liga title Heading into Saturday, Real Madrid were on 84 points while Barcelona started the day on 73 points with both teams each playing 33 matches. Earlier in the day, goals from Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham and Joselu helped Real Madrid win 3-0 against Cadiz. The win meant that Real Madrid reached 87 points with four matches to go. Later in the day, despite leading twice Barcelona lost to Girona 4-2 at the home of their local rivals. The result meant Barcelona could now reach a maximum of 85 points while Girona in second place in La Liga also cannot breach the 87-point tally of Real Madrid as they can reach a maximum of 86 points (if they win all their four matches). The result also had historic silver lining to it as Girona (74 points) sit above Barcelona (73 points) with four matches to go in the season. No local rival from the Catalonian region has finished above Barcelona since World War ll. In 1941-42, Espanyol finished ninth while Barcelona 12th but since then the Camp Nou outfit have never been piped by a local rival. Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez on Wednesday reversed his decision to step down at the end of the season and agreed to stay in charge of the La Liga giants for the 2024-25 campaign, a club spokesperson confirmed to Reuters. Xavi spent most of the day in meetings with Barca officials and agreed to honour the last year of his contract, with a series of unspecified conditions set by the club, sources said.

Xavi is set to speak to the media on Sunday, prior to their La Liga game against Valencia and club president Joan Laporta is expected to hold a press conference on Thursday to talk about the decision.

"Xavi will continue and is very excited, there is unanimity in the club's board that he should continue," club vice-president Rafa Yuste told reporters outside Laporta's home in Barcelona later on Wednesday.

Xavi played for Barcelona for 17 years, making 767 appearances and winning 25 trophies, including four Champions League titles and eight La Liga crowns. But despite being a club great and winning La Liga last term, Barca's stuttering form this season put him under pressure.

When he first announced his decision to step down in January, Xavi said that he felt "liberated", adding that the pressure and demands of the job meant that he could not enjoy himself at his boyhood club.

Xavi said then that his decision was "for the good of the team" and that the players would "be freed up" moving forward. His words were heavily criticised by pundits, but seemed to have a positive impact, with Barca going unbeaten in their next 13 competitive games.

Yet two defeats in their last two games have left them facing a trophyless season. A 3-2 La Liga loss at leaders Real Madrid on Sunday left them 11 points adrift of their bitter rivals with six games left. That defeat came a few days after they were knocked out of the Champions League in another heartbreaking 4-1 defeat against Paris St Germain.

Sources told Reuters that Xavi was promised that no major changes in his staff were expected and Laporta assured him that they will be able to sign top-level players, despite the club's deepening financial problems.

Barca face challenges related to their massive wage bill and a 1.6 billion-euro Camp Nou stadium renovation project and it could be another challenging close-season for Xavi in the transfer market when they may be forced to sell key players to meet La Liga's financial control requirements.

Second-placed Barcelona extended their unbeaten streak in LaLiga to nine games with a 1-0 home win over mid-table Las Palmas on Saturday, courtesy of a second-half header by winger Raphinha after the visitors were reduced to 10 men in the opening period.

Barcelona, who face Paris St Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals next month, have now won seven of their last nine LaLiga outings to move onto 67 points from 30 games.

They are five points behind Real Madrid and five above third-placed Girona, who host Athletic Bilbao and Real Betis respectively on Sunday.

"The game turned good for us after the sending off of the goalkeeper (Alvaro Valles) and we deserved more goals to win comfortably, but today we had a summary of what our season is all about," coach Xavi Hernandez told Movistar.

"We knew that Las Palmas defended with a very high defensive line, so I played with Lamine (Yamal) and Raphinha, who are good at creating space."

The Barca manager was not on the bench as he was serving the first game of a two-match ban after being sent off during their 3-0 win at Atletico Madrid before the international break.

Xavi's side have now kept five consecutive clean sheets in LaLiga for the first time since they managed six between August and October 2022.

<h2>Raphinha Strikes</h2>

Barcelona forwards Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were denied early goals for an offside in the build-up before the Brazilian found the net in the 59th minute, heading a superb cross by substitute Joao Felix into the top corner.

Las Palmas went down to 10 men after 24 minutes when Valles was sent off after rushing out and bringing down Raphinha.

As a result, Las Palmas' only forward Munir had to come off against his former club to make way for keeper Aaron Escandell.

Barca dominated possession in the rain at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, scoring from one of their two shots on target.

Lewandowski could have extended their lead in the 35th minute but his header hit the bar.

Fermin Lopez then fired inches wide of the post before Raphinha missed the target in similar fashion shortly after.

Joao Felix, who set up Raphinha's goal three minutes after coming on, hit the bar from point-blank range in the 68th.

The result extended Las Palmas' winless run to six games -- their worst this season -- and they sit 12th with 37 points.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has said racists in Spanish football should be sent straight to jail from the stadiums for their actions. The Brazilian's statement comes after La Liga was marred by more racist abuse incidents.&nbsp;

During a third-tier game of Spanish football on Saturday (Mar 30), Rayo Majadahonda goalkeeper Cheikh Kane Sarr was given the marching orders after remonstrating with one supporter behind his goal over alleged racial abuse. The game was suspended as Sarr's teammates walked off the pitch.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, Sevilla manager Quique Sanchez Flores was subjected to racist language by Getafe fans who also yelled "Acuna monkey" and "Acuna, you come from monkeys", at the World Cup-winning player.&nbsp;

Reflecting on the situation, Vini Jr. took to his X (formerly known as Twitter) account and said: "This weekend, I won't even play. To Sarr and @RMajadahonda may your bravery inspire others."

"Racists must be exposed and the games cannot continue with them in the stands. We will only have victory when the racists leave the stadiums straight to jail, a place they deserve," he added.&nbsp;

‘Straight to jail’: Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr on how racists should be treated

Real Madrid are all set to land long-term target Kylian Mbappe in the summer transfer window after the striker confirmed his desire to leave Paris Saint-Germain in February. Mbappe, long linked to Real will possibly complete his move to the Spanish giants once the season gets over. It is expected that he will complete the move before the start of the Euro 2024, where he will be representing France. Speaking on the move, defender Dani Carvajal reckons the move will only make La Liga and Real Madrid better while there will be no disharmony in the camp.

<h2>Carvajal on Mbappe move</h2>

"It seems like it's a possibility that he could come at the end of the season," Carvajal told COPE radio on Tuesday.

"The best players have to play for Madrid, and he's one of the best."

"It would be good for La Liga, for [Spanish] football. If great players come to our league -- to our team, even better -- but [Robert] Lewandowski went to Barcelona, and he's a top player. It makes our league grow, our football is better and that's good for everyone."

It is expected that Mbappe will take a pay cut to make his move to the Madrid capital and will earn less compared to his current salary at PSG. He is even expected to take a salary lower than Jude Bellingham when the move materialises in the summer. However, he will be paid something in the region of $100 million as signing-on fees which will be one of the highest in the history of the sport. The fee could raise some eyebrows in the Los Blancos camp but Carvajal has dismissed such claims.

"Jealousy, no," Carvajal said when asked if Mbappé's signing could spark a negative reaction from some teammates.

"It's down to those people who've been at the club longer to make sure that everyone pulls in the same direction in the dressing room,” Carvajal added.

While the long-term target remains to sign Mbappe, for the short term Real will look to clinch the La Liga and Champions League double as they face a tough run in the business end of the campaign. They will face Manchester City in the Champions League and potential tie against either Bayern Munich or Arsenal.

Kylian Mbappe transfer: Dani Carvajal dismisses talks of jealousy in Real Madrid camp ahead of big move

Real Madrid have filed a complaint against a referee after he omitted alleged racist abuse hurled towards Vinicius Junior, from his La Liga match report involving&nbsp;Osasuna over the weekend.&nbsp;

The Spanish club claimed that referee Juan Martinez Munuera did not deliberately include the&nbsp;"insults and vexatious shouts" made towards their star forward.&nbsp;

"The referee voluntarily and deliberately omitted the insults and vexatious shouts directed repeatedly towards our player Vinicius Jr, despite these being insistently pointed out by our players at the very moment when they were taking place," Madrid said in a statement.&nbsp;

"Real Madrid once again condemns these violent attacks of racism, discrimination and hatred, and demands that the necessary measures be taken, once and for all, to eradicate the violence that our player Vinicius Junior has been suffering."

The allegation&nbsp;by Real Madrid against the referee comes a few days after La Liga claimed it was filing a complaint with the prosecutor's office over the deplorable chants made against the Brazilian.&nbsp;

According to LaLiga, chants of&nbsp;"Vinícius chimpanzee" were heard before Atletico Madrid's UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.&nbsp;

Real Madrid have filed a complaint against a referee after he omitted alleged racist abuse hurled towards Vinicius Junior, from his La Liga match report involving Osasuna over the weekend.

Real Madrid have filed a complaint against a referee after he omitted alleged racist abuse hurled towards Vinicius Junior, from his La Liga match report involving Osasuna over the weekend. The Spanish club claimed that referee Juan Martinez Munuera did not deliberately include the "insults and vexatious shouts" made towards their star forward. "The referee voluntarily and deliberately omitted the insults and vexatious shouts directed repeatedly towards our player Vinicius Jr, despite these being insistently pointed out by our players at the very moment when they were taking place," Madrid said in a statement. "Real Madrid once again condemns these violent attacks of racism, discrimination and hatred, and demands that the necessary measures be taken, once and for all, to eradicate the violence that our player Vinicius Junior has been suffering." The allegation by Real Madrid against the referee comes a few days after La Liga claimed it was filing a complaint with the prosecutor's office over the deplorable chants made against the Brazilian. According to LaLiga, chants of "Vinícius chimpanzee" were heard before Atletico Madrid's UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. The abuses were hurled against Vini Jr. when he wasn't even involved in the match. Real Madrid accuse referee of omitting racial abuse against Vinicius Junior from match report

Barcelona cruised to an emphatic 3-0 win at Atletico Madrid on Sunday with goals from Joao Felix, Robert Lewandowski and Fermin Lopez, to move second in the LaLiga standings.

The hosts dominated the early exchanges, but Barcelona grabbed the lead in the 38th minute following a fine passing move with Lewandowski teeing up Felix for an easy close-range finish.

Lewandowski extended the advantage two minutes into the second half as Raphinha stole the ball from Atletico's Rodrigo de Paul to set up the Pole for his 13th league goal of the season.

The visitors seemed untroubled by coach Xavi Hernandez being sent off in the first half and Lopez sealed the rout in the 65th minute with a towering header off Lewandowski's second assist of the night.

"It was probably the most complete game. It was a match similar to the one against Napoli," said Xavi referring to their midweek win in the Champions League.

"It's an ideal match for our methodology and philosophy of play. We are Barca, nobody relaxes here. We are going to try to improve and compete for the two most important titles.

"I am passionate and I want my team to win. For me the sending off was unnecessary and unfair but we have to accept it."

Barcelona moved above Girona, who were beaten 1-0 by Getafe on Saturday, in the table with 64 points, eight behind leaders Real Madrid.

"We are believing until the end. Trying to cut points and fight for the league," Lopez said. "Xavi told me to play calmly. I think we are in a good dynamic and we hope to extend it as long as possible".

Atletico, who were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time following Nahuel Molina's red card, suffered their first home loss of the season to leave them fifth with 55 points, one adrift of Athletic Bilbao in the last Champions League qualifying berth.

"They were better. The second goal took us straight out of the game. Congratulations to them because they played a good game," Atletico manager Diego Simeone said.

"Nothing to complain about my players. They gave their all. Let's stay calm and push for fourth place. It will be complicated and difficult."

La Liga: Barcelona sink Atletico Madrid to climb second on points table

After Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior was subjected to deplorable racist chants by Atletico Madrid fans, LaLiga has said it will file a complaint with the&nbsp;Spain prosecutors' office.&nbsp;

The racist chants against Vini Jr. were heard before Atletico's UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday (Mar 14) night.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to LaLiga, chants of&nbsp;"Vinícius chimpanzee" were heard in one of the videos circulating on social media.&nbsp;

Rafa Benitez sacked by struggling La Liga club Celta Vigo

Real Madrid midfield Jude Bellingham has hit back at the Spanish&nbsp;Football Federation (RFEF) for imposing a two-match ban on him for dissent during the La Liga match against Valencia over the weekend.&nbsp;

After the UEFA Champions League match against RB Leipzig on Wednesday (Mar 6), Bellingham termed the suspension as "ridiculous".&nbsp;

"I didn't say anything offensive, I didn't say anything different to what my team-mates said and I think that sometimes because I'm new they want to make an example of me," said Bellingham.&nbsp;

"In the end I have to be responsible for my actions and I'm not proud, but I think two matches for that is a bit ridiculous, but if it's two matches I have to take my responsibility and I'll cheer from the stands," he added.&nbsp;

Apart from the ban, the English player was fined&nbsp;$652 (£513) while Madrid was asked to fork out&nbsp; $760&nbsp;(£598).&nbsp;

Bellingham was handed the punishment despite Madrid appealing the red card. RFEF in its statement said Bellingham showed&nbsp;"contempt or&nbsp;disregard" towards referee&nbsp;Gil Manzano when Madrid players and staff surrounded him.

Controversy erupted in the high-octane La Liga match between Real Madrid and Valencia on Saturday (Mar 2) as the match ended all squares after a bizarre photo-finish. Midfielder Jude Bellingham scored the winner deep into the stoppage time for the Los Blancos but the goal was disallowed as the referee had blown his whistle, moments before the ball nestled into the back of the net.&nbsp;

Soon after Bellingham planted the supposed winning header, he ran towards the corner flag to celebrate with Brahim Diaz as the Valencia defenders sank into the ground. However, cameras soon picked&nbsp;&nbsp;Gil Manzano, the man with the whistle, adding another twist to what was a topsy-turvy game from start to finish.&nbsp;

Anguished that the goal was chalked off, Bellingham lost his temper and charged alongside his teammates at the referee and allegedly mouthed:&nbsp;"It’s a f*cking goal, the ball is in the air. What the f*ck is that!"

Manzano didn't like what he heard and reached for his back pocket, flashing a red card in the direction of the England international.

The tempers continued to flare as Vinicus Jr. got into a heated altercation with a Valencia player before others had to intervene to separate the two. Meanwhile, fullback Dani Carvajal could be seen gesturing animately towards the Real Madrid bench as the controversy unfolded.&nbsp;

Watch | Controversy erupts during Real Madrid's La Liga match as Bellingham gets red-carded

Veteran midfielder Luka Modric's curling strike gave Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Sevilla on Sunday, lifting them eight points clear of Barcelona atop La Liga where they are unbeaten in 20 games.

Madrid's last league loss came in September.

Third-placed Girona are a further point adrift. They are not in action until Monday when they take on Rayo Vallecano.

With Jude Bellingham and Joselu both injured, and Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Carvajal suspended, Madrid faltered in the early exchanges and Youssef En-Nesyri missed an early chance for the visitors.

Sunday's game appeared headed for a stalemate until 38-year-old Modric, who was on as a late substitute, produced a blistering strike from outside the box after 81 minutes as the referee waved away angry Sevilla claims for off-side.

An equally impressive Lucas Vazquez strike had been wiped off by VAR after 10 minutes, a decision which prompted jeers and brought a yellow card for Real coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"We deserved the win, we kept up the intensity until the very end and this is what happens when you achieve that," said the Italian coach.

The match saw 37-year-old Sergio Ramos' return to the Santiago Bernabeu where he spent 16 seasons, but it was Modric who stole the headlines.

"We proved that we never give up. That is in Real Madrid's DNA," said Modric.

"We would have preferred to have scored earlier, but it's even more thrilling when it comes late."

Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde had a lively game, hitting a post and scraping the crossbar in the first half as Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo also went close.

Vinicius was the man behind Lucas Vazquez's goal which was ruled out when Nacho had clearly fouled Youssef En-Nesyri in the run-up.&nbsp;

A minute's silence was observed before the game in memory of victims of the apartment block fire in the Spanish city of Valencia.

On Saturday, Xavi's rejigged Barcelona side thrashed Getafe 4-0 to climb to second with recalled duo Joao Felix and Raphinha on the scoresheet.

Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong and Fermin Lopez were also on target.

"We knew which spaces to attack and opened them up on several occasions and that's where the goals came from. It's a victory which gives us a little more peace of mind," said Barca coach Xavi.

Bottom side Almeria twice came from behind to hold Atletico Madrid to a 2-2 draw. The stalemate left the hosts winless this season after 26 matches.

Atletico, who lost 1-0 in the Champions League last 16 first leg tie at Inter Milan in midweek, remain fourth, 13 points off leaders Real Madrid.

“The club wishes to confirm through a written statement to the Competition Committee of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), that we have reported the campaign of persecution and harassment towards the referee Díaz de Mera and González Fuertes (VAR) for tomorrow evening's game against Real Madrid orchestrated by Real Madrid TV, the official club television channel of Real Madrid,” a statement on Sevilla’s website read.

“We wish to formally report these events to the RFEF to see if these actions can be considered as a violation of competition rules or any other regulations. The club also wishes to reiterate its strongest condemnation of these orchestrated campaigns aimed at undermining the image of the refereeing body, causing serious harm to Spanish football and calling into question the integrity of the competition,” the statement added.

The clash on Sunday evening will be crucial for both sides as they search for a vital win to achieve team targets. With 62 points so far in the La Liga campaign, the Los Blancos could open a nine-point gap over second placed Girona who are not in action until Monday evening. A defeat to Sevilla coupled with a win for Girnoa could make matters interesting at the top of the La Liga standings.

On the flip side, Sevilla are engaged in a thrilling relegation battle despite the achievement of European glory last season. A win for the Roji Blancos will see them open a 10-point gap between themselves and 18th placed Cadiz.

Barcelona have little room for error if they are to defend their LaLiga title, manager Xavi Hernandez said on Friday ahead of his side's trip to Celta Vigo.

Barca's hopes to overtake bitter rivals Real Madrid and this campaign's surprise package Girona in the title race suffered another blow last weekend after a 3-3 home draw against relegation-threatened Granada.

Barca are third in the standings with 51 points from 24 matches, 10 behind leaders Real and five less than Girona.&nbsp;Xavi is aware that anything other than a win against 17th-placed Celta on Saturday would make matters worse for his team.

"The squad is united and training hard," Xavi told reporters. "But we can't afford any more slips. I am positive that we can make up the lost ground. That's the direction we are working in, improving in defence, in pressure.

"These are three very important points that would improve our league position," he added.

Barca will visit Italian champions Napoli in the first leg of the Champions League's round of 16 next week, but the Spaniard said his focus remains on the Celta game for now.

"I'm not thinking about Napoli yet. We are totally concentrated on both competitions," he said. "I think this season could still turn out well. It's all about how the team reacts in the next few games, and we'll be giving everything we've got,"&nbsp;Xavi added.

The 44-year-old midfield great, who announced his decision to step down from his position as Barca coach in January, said he wants to finish his stint on the best possible note.

"I love Barca and would give all I have for this season to end on a high note," he&nbsp;said.

Ancelotti said he did not think the league leaders' squad would be affected by rumours and talk surrounding Mbappe in the weeks ahead.

Catalan minnows Girona, second and now trailing leaders Real Madrid by one point, could not find a way through against their Basque visitors.

Los Blancos face city rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu and can potentially move four points clear at the top.

Girona's draw leaves them six points ahead of champions Barcelona, third, and they were left upset after Yangel Herrera had a goal ruled out for offside in the build-up.

The offside against Savinho occurred 36 seconds before the midfielder found the net, set up by the Brazilian winger, with Girona arguing VAR should not have intervened.

Some crosses had been half-cleared by Real Sociedad before Savinho scooped the ball to the back post for Herrera.

"The reality is that if there's a second, third phases (of play), VAR should not get involved, I think it's obvious," said Michel.

"Beyond the goal ruled out, I think it was a very, very difficult game ... and it's a good point."

Despite leading the league in goals scored, Michel Sanchez's side were largely kept at arm's length by La Real.

After Herrera's goal was disallowed, Real Sociedad's Mikel Oyarzabal also had one chalked off for a clearer offside infringement.

Alex Remiro made a solid save to deny Herrera in the final stages as the hosts were frustrated and Michel was sent off for complaining on the touchline.

Valery Fernandez missed a fine chance in stoppage time after Yan Couto scrapped hard to win the ball back and crossed for the Spanish winger.

Without La Liga's joint top goalscorer Artem Dovbyk, who watched from the stands after suffering knee discomfort according to Spanish reports, Girona did not shine in attack.

They will have the chance to make amends next weekend when they visit Real Madrid in a crunch showdown.

However coach Michel will not be in the dugout, while Herrera and Daley Blind were both booked and are also suspended for the key clash.

"I don't like that they sent me off, I protested, it's true, but I didn't lack respect for anyone," said Michel.

"The red card leaves me furious."

<h2>Roque red</h2>

Champions Barcelona took the lead against Alaves through Robert Lewandowski in the first half and doubled their advantage when Ilkay Gundogan volleyed home soon after the break.

Samu Omorodion pulled a goal back for the hosts before 18-year-old striker Roque pounced and a few minutes later was harshly dismissed.

Barcelona's victory helps them cut the gap on league leaders Real Madrid to seven points before Los Blancos face Atletico Madrid in a derby clash Sunday.

They have won both of their matches since Xavi announced last weekend he would leave the club at the end of the season.

Xavi selected Andreas Christensen in defensive midfield for the first time in his Barcelona career, with the Catalans still unable to find a reliable replacement for Sergio Busquets.

The Danish defender was solid and showed Xavi he is an option for the future in the role.

"He was comfortable, aggressive, didn't lose the ball, kept his eyes open -- we were good on transitions, he gave us discipline," Xavi told reporters.

Roque, who arrived in the January transfer window from Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense, was on the pitch less than 15 minutes after he was shown two yellow cards.

The second was for an innocuous challenge on Rafa Marin, but there was no video review as VAR cannot ask officials to check second yellow card incidents.

Barcelona coach Xavi said Friday La Liga was "completely adulterated" by rivals Real Madrid because of heavy criticism towards officials broadcast on the club's television channel.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti dismissed Xavi's words as "unprofessional" but Roque's red card will only add more fuel to the flames.

"We will appeal it because it's clear that it's an error, it's another error from the referee towards us," Xavi told DAZN.

"Evidently it's an unfair red card."

LaLiga: Girona drop two points in loss to Real Sociedad; Barcelona beat Alaves 3-1

Barcelona's 18-year-old Brazilian striker Vitor Roque came off the bench and scored with a header to snatch a 1-0 win against visitors Osasuna in LaLiga on Wednesday.

In their first game since manager Xavi Hernandez announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season, Barca once again struggled up-front but managed to find the winner in the 63rd minute when Roque netted from a Joao Cancelo cross one minute after coming on.

Barca moved third in the LaLiga standings on 47 points, eight behind leaders Girona and seven adrift of second-placed Real Madrid, who have a game in hand and will play at Getafe on Thursday.

Osasuna, who finished the game with 10 men after captain Unai Garcia was sent off in the 66th minute, are 12th with 26 points.

It was Roque's first goal for the club since arriving from Brazil earlier this month after Barcelona signed him from Athletico Paranaense during the summer window in a deal worth 61 million euros ($65.8 million), including add-ons.

It helped Barca recover from a traumatic evening on Saturday, when visitors Villarreal scored two stoppage-time goals to secure a 5-3 LaLiga win before Xavi's shock announcement.

In a half-empty Montjuic Olympic Stadium in front of 37,888 fans, Barcelona's third worst attendance of the season, Barca dominated possession in the first half but managed to record only one shot on target.

Already missing several starters due to injuries including Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Gavi, Joao Felix and Alejandro Balde, Xavi suffered another setback early against Osasuna, when forward Ferran Torres was forced off in tears with what looked like a hamstring injury five minutes into the game.

He was replaced by 20-year-old Fermin Lopez, who was himself subbed in the 62nd minute to give way to Roque, who ended up scoring the winner in his first action on the pitch.

Garcia was sent off for a second yellow card for holding the Brazilian from behind to stop a counter-attack.

However, even playing with a man down, Osasuna took control and pressured Barcelona for the remainder of the match, with Raul Garcia hitting a strike against the post and Barca goalkeeper Inaki Pena denying the substitute again when his shot looked destined for the top-left corner.

"It was a week that was not normal, everything that happened (Xavi's bombshell). It's the coach's decision and we have to give everything for him," Barca's Pedri told DAZN.

"The win tastes very good. It was difficult game because of where we were coming from in a strange week for us.

"These are the last games that we are going to enjoy with him. We want to give him victories".
