Barcelona were stunned by Juanmi's late goal for Real Betis that secured a 1-0 win in LaLiga on Saturday and ended home coach Xavi Hernandez's honeymoon at the club as he suffered his first defeat since coming back to the Camp Nou three weeks ago.

It was Betis' first win at Barca in more than three years and took them up to third place with 30 points, six points behind leaders Real Madrid who play later on Saturday at Real Sociedad. Barcelona are languishing in seventh on 23 points.

With Barca's decisive Champions League match away to Bayern Munich coming up on Wednesday, Xavi rested three of his most important players - Gerard Pique, Frenkie de Jong and Ousmane Dembele - but the decision backfired.

Betis were dangerous on the counter-attack and Juanmi, who earlier had a goal disallowed by VAR for a close offside call, struck a clean finish past keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen after fine build-up play by Sergio Canales and this one did count.

“They scored when we were playing better, we can’t allow this type of counter-attack to happen,” Xavi told reporters.

“It’s a defeat that hurts. We were at home, playing well in the second half. We need to get better, but I think we deserved more. It was a unfair punishment after playing a good game.”

With Ousmane Dembele on the bench, Barca needed Philippe Coutinho to step up, but it was another disappointing afternoon for the Brazilian, who failed to create any chances.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said forward Eden Hazard still wants to succeed at the club despite being hampered by injuries and poor form since arriving in 2019.

Belgium international Hazard, 30, joined Real Madrid from Chelsea for a reported 120 million euros ($134.94 million). He scored four goals in 21 appearances in all competitions last season but has yet to find the net this campaign, having played 11 times so far.

Hazard has not started a game since their shock 2-1 Champions League home loss to Sheriff Tiraspol in September and was not included in the squad for Wednesday's return match in Moldova.\

"I have known Eden for a long time and know that his dream was to play for Real Madrid. It's a shame it hasn't worked out yet as everyone would like it to," Courtois said.

"I can see that he has got the desire, joy and he wants to help the team. He is looking to improve. It's not easy to take back your best form when you haven't played for the last two and a half years.

"He has showed in his entire career he is one of the best players in the world. He hasn't been able to show it lately, but that talent is not gone and I am sure he will get back, so we cannot kill him believing he is an average player because he is not."

'He wants to help the team': Thibaut Courtois reveals Eden Hazard still wants to succeed at Real Madrid

Xavi Hernandez started his reign as FC Barcelona coach with a 1-0 win in the city derby against Espanyol in the Camp Nou Stadium here. Although there were positive signs for Barca, they owed their win to a controversial penalty and some bad luck for their rivals, who saw two shots from striker Raul de Tomas hit the post.

Xavi made a declaration of intent in his starting 11 on Saturday night with 17-year-old Gavi and 19-year-old Nico Gonzalez joined by 17-year-old Ilias Akhomach, who was making his first team debut. The new coach's style was also quickly evident as Barca looked more aggressive and tried to pressure Espanyol high up the field.

Memphis Depay had Barca's first chance after just three minutes, but his volley was right at Diego Lopez, while Ilias fired over with his left foot. Espanyol were content to sit deep and soak up pressure and for all Barca's pressure, chances were few and far between, with Gonzalez seeing a shot blocked after a long Barca attack, while Lopez got down well to a Busquets` effort from outside of the area.

The half ended with Espanyol striker Raul de Tomas seeing a shot deflected inches over after getting in behind Barca right back Oscar Mingueza, Xinhua reports. Xavi replaced Ilias with another youngster Abde at the start of the second half and within a minute Barca were awarded a penalty after Memphis went down under a challenge from Leandro Cabrera.

It looked as if the defender had clearly got the ball, but the VAR confirmed the referee's decision and Memphis sent Lopez the wrong way from the spot. The game was scrappy after the goal, with too many niggling fouls and both Abde and Pedrosa were booked after squaring up to each other, a minute before Cabrera slid Abde's low cross out for a corner.

At the other end Ter Stegen punched away Adrian Embarba's free kick from a tight angle and De Tomas fired wide after again getting in behind Mingueza.

Abde was proving to be a threat for Barca, cutting inside and curling a shot just over the Espanyol crossbar, before beating Pedrosa for speed and sending the ball along the edge of the six-yard box.

Wu Lei came on for Espanyol in the 78th minute, just before De Tomas grazed the outside of the Barca post from a free kick and the Chinese winger then sent the ball over for Landry Dimata, who somehow headed wide with the goal gaping.

De Tomas hit the post with a powerful header after a cross from the left and Wu Lei was inches away from vital touch in the last seconds as Barca rode their luck to hold on.

La Liga: Controversial penalty gives Xavi debut win as Barca ride their luck vs Espanyol

Barcelona threw away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 at Celta Vigo in LaLiga on Saturday in a chaotic game which underlined the scale of the task facing incoming coach Xavi Hernandez.

Celta captain Iago Aspas completed a remarkable second-half comeback from the hosts by scoring in the fifth minute of added time after he had pulled their first goal back in the 52nd and Nolito had struck in the 74th to set up a tense finish.

Teenage forward Ansu Fati had given Barca the lead in the fifth minute and captain Sergio Busquets extended their advantage with a low strike from outside the area in the 18th before Memphis Depay added a third in the 34th.

But Barca experienced a huge drop off in performance in the second half and Celta's stunning comeback extended the Catalans' winless streak to four league games.

Barca are ninth in the standings with 17 points after 12 games while Celta are 14th on 12.

The Catalans began the day by finally confirming that midfield great Xavi would succeed the sacked Ronald Koeman as coach next week, announcing the appointment at 1:45AM local time.

Caretaker coach Sergi Barjuan named an identical starting 11 to the team that had won 1-0 at Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League thanks to a strike from Fati and the 19-year-old got his side off to an ideal start by curling into the far corner.

Barca grew in confidence and began to play the type of flowing football they were renowned for in the days when Xavi ruled their midfield.

Their third goal was the pick of the bunch, a sweeping move which began with a goal kick and ended with Dutch forward Depay glancing in a Jordi Alba cross into the net.

A near-perfect first half for the Catalans was soured by an injury to Fati and they were overpowered by Celta in the second period.

Celta's Thiago Galhardo had a goal ruled out soon after the restart and Aspas pulled them back into contention by pouncing when Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen spilled a cross into his path.

Nolito then had a goal disallowed for a handball but quickly made amends by scoring with a diving header, helped by some passive defending from Barca.

The Catalans looked like they were begging for the final whistle for the remaining minutes as Celta continued to pour forward and after they had missed several chances to score Aspas landed the equaliser with a sumptuous first-time finish from the edge of the area.

Moving on from Messi to top-four finish: Issues that Xavi will have to address at Barcelona

Barcelona said on Saturday they had named former midfielder and captain Xavi Hernandez as head coach on a contract until 2024, following the sacking of Ronald Koeman. The LaLiga club received the green light on Friday to sign the 41-year-old after they paid the release clause in his contract with Qatari side Al-Sadd.

Xavi played for Barcelona for 17 years, making 767 appearances and winning 25 trophies, including four Champions League wins and eight league titles.

"FC Barcelona have reached an agreement with Xavi Hernandez for him to become first team coach for the rest of the current season and two more seasons," the club said in a statement headlined "WELCOME BACK HOME, XAVI!"

"Xavi Hernandez, a youth team product at Barca, has left his current club, Al-Sadd of Qatar, after talks held over the last few days with the owners of the club."

Dutch coach Koeman was sacked&nbsp;after a 1-0 defeat by Rayo Vallecano last month which left Barca ninth in LaLiga.
The club are still ninth after Sergi Barjuan was appointed as caretaker coach and sit nine points behind leaders Real Sociedad with a game in hand.

Barjuan is set to remain in charge for their league match at Celta Vigo on Saturday, with Xavi arriving in Barcelona this weekend before his presentation on Monday.

"It wasn`t goodbye, it was `see you soon`. The Camp Nou has always been my home," Xavi said in a video addressed to the fans.

"You`re my fans, my people, the club that I love the most. And now, I`m coming home. See you soon, Culers. Forca Barca!"

Xavi`s first game would be a local derby against Espanyol on Nov. 20, after the international break.

A former Spain international, Xavi joined Al-Sadd as a player in 2015, becoming head coach after hanging up his boots in 2019. In April, he led his side to the Qatari domestic league title with the team unbeaten.

He turned down the chance to coach Barca in January 2020 after Ernesto Valverde was sacked, but remained linked with the job even after Koeman succeeded Quique Setien in August of last year.

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero has been ruled out for three months following cardiac evaluation, the Spanish club said on Monday.

The Argentine international received medical assistance on the pitch after he complained of chest pain during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Alaves in La Liga and had to be taken to hospital.

Barca said he now faces a lengthy spell out.

“Aguero&nbsp;has been subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Dr Josep Brugada,” Barcelona said in a statement.

“He is unavailable for selection and during the next three months the effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process.”

The 33-year-old joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Manchester City in July.
He has made five appearances in all competitions so far, scoring one goal, after starting the season with a calf problem.

“I talked to him and he is calm. He is confined to his room but considering the situation he is calm,” Barca caretaker manager Sergi Barjuan said earlier on Monday.

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero sidelined for three months following chest discomfort

Barcelona's miserable LaLiga campaign continued as they were held to a 1-1 home draw by lowly Alaves on Saturday in their first match since the sacking of coach Ronald Koeman.

Barca`s third consecutive league game without a win left them ninth in the standings, eight points behind leaders Real Madrid.

After a cagey first half, Dutch forward Memphis Depay put Barcelona ahead four minutes after the interval with a fine strike from outside the penalty area.

The lead lasted only three minutes, however, as Alaves winger Luis Rioja conjured up an excellent equaliser, playing a neat one-two with Joselu before rounding Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to score.

Barcelona also suffered injury blows when striker Sergio Aguero and defender Gerard Pique were forced off ahead of their Champions League clash at Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday.

After defeats by Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano which led to Koeman sacking, only 37,000 fans turned up at the Camp Nou to see the first game under caretaker coach Sergi Barjuan, the club`s worst attendance for 20 years.

"It`s another coach but the ideas are the same. We have the ball but we keep struggling to score," Barcelona defender Jordi Alba told reporters.

Eric Garcia had Barca`s best opportunity in the first half with a header and Aguero`s long-distance shot flew wide but the best chance fell to Alaves`s Edgar Mendes.

Barcelona came out with more aggressive intent after the interval and Depay produced a stunning strike to register his fifth goal of the season.

Rioja responded quickly, however, running on to Joselu`s backheel to round Ter Stegen and place the ball into an empty net.

Barcelona`s 17-year-old midfielder Gavi dribbled past four Alaves defenders and set up Memphis whose effort hit the post and Nico also created a chance for the Dutchman which was saved by keeper Antonio Sivera.

Alaves remained 16th in the standings.

Alaves remained 16th in the standings.

La Liga: FC Barcelona held by Deportivo Alaves in first game since Ronald Koeman's sacking

Barcelona should have sacked coach Ronald Koeman&nbsp;before Wednesday`s 1-0 LaLiga defeat at Rayo Vallecano, club president Joan Laporta said on Friday.

The Dutchman was fired after Barca lost their second La Liga game in a row following their 2-1 home defeat by Real Madrid in the Clasico on Sunday.

"Looking at the situation as of today, it probably would have been the best decision (to terminate Koeman`s contract before)," Laporta told a news conference to present Sergi Barjuan as caretaker manager.

"Now it is easy to say that but that are circumstances that led us to wait. We thought that Koeman needed more time. I take full responsibility but the situation got to a point that was unsustainable."

Laporta indicated that talks with 41-year-old former Barcelona great Xavi Hernandez, the manager of Qatar`s Al-Sadd, are advanced but no agreement had yet been reached.

Atletico Madrid conceded a last-minute penalty and had coach Diego Simeone sent off as they were held to a 2-2 draw by struggling Levante in LaLiga on Thursday.

Simeone's men appeared on course to grab all three points after going 2-1 ahead following substitute Matheus Cunha`s stunning 76th minute strike.

But for the second time on Thursday, visitors Atletico surrendered their lead through a penalty, following a handball by Renan Lodi.

Enis Bardhi converted his second spot kick of the game in the 90th-minute to hand 19th-placed Levante a share of the points.
The result left Atletico in sixth place with 19 points from 10 games, five adrift of surprise leaders Real Sociedad.

Winless Levante chalked up their sixth draw of the season to move onto six points.

However, the hosts were unlucky not to have secured their first league win of the season as they also missed a couple of great chances in the closing stages.

Antoine Griezmann scored his first league goal of the season with a header to give Atletico the lead in the 12th minute.

But they then allowed Levante to take control of the game and the hosts were rewarded for their resilience when they earned a penalty in the 37th minute following a foul by Luis Suarez.

Bardhi thundered the spot kick into the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.

"We relaxed and got sloppy after scoring the first goal. Need to play better, be more concentrated", Griezmann told reporters.

An increasingly frustrated Simeone made four substitutions in the second-half and his gamble paid off when Cunha came off the bench to score Atletico`s second goal from a Rodrigo de Paul pass.

Barca responded well and Fati levelled after 13 minutes with a wonderful curled finished from the edge of the box.
The youngster was then felled inside the box by Gaya four minutes before the break and Memphis Depay stepped up to net from the spot.

Former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez heaped more misery on his old club as Atletico Madrid claimed a 2-0 LaLiga victory over the Catalans at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday. First-half strikes from Thomas Lemar and Suarez were enough for the champions to secure all three points and heap pressure on the visitors` beleaguered boss Ronald Koeman.

Barca have won just one game in their last six in all competitions as their early season struggles show no signs of easing.

"We`re suffering, I`m going to be honest with you," Barca defender Gerard Pique said.

"We started well enough, we were brave, but then they create two identical situations and scored twice - whereas we could`ve played for three hours and not scored.

"It isn`t one problem, there are several. People can see what we lack. But we`ll recover. They`re difficult times, a lot of us haven`t experienced this before. We want to turn it around but it isn`t easy."

Atletico started the brighter and went close through Lemar and Joao Felix efforts from the edge of the box before the Frenchman opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Felix fed Suarez, who played a brilliant ball round the corner to send Lemar through and he powered his effort past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Suarez then missed a glorious chance to double the lead moments later as he skewed a one-on-one effort wide, but made no mistake on the stroke of halftime after Lemar returned the favour to tee him up.

Barca`s best opportunity to get back into the game fell to Philippe Coutinho, however the Brazilian`s tame effort was comfortable saved by Jan Oblak.

The victory moved Atletico level with table toppers Real Madrid, who travel to Barca`s city rivals Espanyol on Sunday, on 17 points from eight games.

Barcelona, meanwhile, sit ninth with 12 points having played a game fewer.

Real Madrid missed the chance to go five points clear at the top of LaLiga as they were held 0-0 by Villarreal at the Bernabeu on Saturday.

The result means Carlo Ancelotti`s side move onto 17 points, three above city rivals Atletico Madrid, who lost 1-0 away to Alaves earlier in the day.

It was a frustrating affair for the hosts where clear cut chances were few and far between, with the final ball too often lacking.

Arnaut Danjuma looked most likely to score for the visitors, forcing goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into a couple of smart stops in each half.

Real defender Eder Militao sent a header wide after the break from a Marco Asensio freekick as Madrid struggled to make a breakthrough.

A combination of Isco and Vinicius Junior were denied by Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli as Unai Emery`s side held on to secure a point.

La Liga: Champions Atletico Madrid suffer shock loss at Alaves

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman took no questions in a brief news conference on Wednesday and instead read a statement saying the under-performing club were in a period of transition and the process required patience.

The Dutch coach's position has become more precarious in the last week following a 3-0 thrashing at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Monday's surprise 1-1 draw at home to Granada in LaLiga, leaving his side with eight points from their opening four games.

Speaking ahead of Barca's LaLiga game away to Cadiz on Thursday, he said the club trusted him to lead the team through a period of transition and the focus would be on young players.

"The club is with me in this period of reconstruction. We have to reconstruct the team as a squad without making big investments and this takes time," Koeman told a virtual news conference, reading from a statement.

"The young talents we have can become world stars in a couple of years. The young players will have opportunities, just as Xavi and (Andres) Iniesta had in their day, but we ask for patience.

"Finishing high in the table would be a success on its own and in the Champions League we cannot expect miracles. The defeat against Bayern should be taken with perspective. The team should be supported, with words and with actions."

Koeman has become increasingly spiky in recent media appearances as his role has become increasingly questioned.

After the heavy defeat by Bayern he said he was tired of answering questions about his future while he had another heated exchange with reporters after the draw with Granada.

His relationship with president Joan Laporta has also become more strained after he criticised the club's chief in an interview with Dutch media for undermining him, saying he "says too much".

Laporta has released two videos in the last week on social media addressing fans on the team's predicament and also asking for them to be patient while the club deals with its colossal debt, which led to all-time top scorer Lionel Messi leaving last month to join Paris St Germain.

"Stay calm, we know what we have to do and we will fix this," Laporta said in the latest video released on Tuesday.

Vice-president Eduard Romeu, meanwhile, told newspaper Sport on Wednesday that fans will need to be patient with the club for the next two years while it gets its house in order.

"We ask for two years of patience from the fans. We ask for them to stay calm, even though its not easy after winning so much," he said.

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman calls for patience in unusual news conference

Real Madrid`s Karim Benzema netted a hat-trick as they capped their return to the refurbished Santiago Bernabeu stadium with a thrilling 5-2 comeback win over Celta Vigo in LaLiga on Sunday.

The Frenchman was unplayable at times as Madrid were reunited with their fans for the first time since March 1, 2020.

They played the whole of last season at reserve team Castilla`s Alfredo Di Stefano ground at their training complex.

"I feel good, I`ve got the support of the coach, the president, the players and the crowd," Benzema said.

"It`s a special night for us with the fans here and the atmosphere. It was a little strange to be playing in front of fans again, but they got right behind us. We need their support and they gave us everything today."

The crowd were, however, stunned when Santi Mina latched onto a defensive mistake to put the visitors ahead after four minutes.

Madrid recovered well, pinning Celta back, and the pressure eventually told after 24 minutes as Benzema equalised with his first goal following a Federico Valverde cutback.

Franco Cervi put Celta back in front seven minutes later against the run of play from a lightning counter-attack and they went in ahead at the break.

But Benzema, who had what he thought was an equaliser disallowed for offside just before halftime, headed Real level two minutes after the restart and from then on there was only going to be one winner.

The forward teed up Vinicius Junior whose composed finish gave Carlo Ancelotti`s side the lead for the first time.

New signing Eduardo Camavinga came off the bench to score on his debut, with the France midfielder tucking the ball home from close range, before Benzema completed his treble with a penalty three minutes from time to delight the returning home fans.

Real had started the process of reforming their stadium just before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, modernising the ground and adding a retractable roof.

Benzema grabs treble as Real win seven-goal thriller on Bernabeu return

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti defended his club on Saturday following criticism from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin this week.

Ceferin told German publication Der Spiegel that he would not mind if Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus - the three remaining clubs in the breakaway Super League project - were not part of UEFA.

He also criticised Real president Florentino Perez for claiming that European football clubs were in dire straits financially, before being linked with a 180 million euro ($212.65 million) bid for Paris St Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.

"I thought it was a bit strange that an organisation as important as UEFA spoke about the president of a 13-time Champions League winner like that," Ancelotti told a news conference.

"If the president of a 13-time Champions League winning club is incompetent, what does that make everyone else?"

Ancelotti also said that the club's South American contingent, who only arrived back on Spanish soil on Friday, would be available for selection against Celta Vigo on Sunday despite playing in CONMEBOL's extended international window.

"They came back yesterday (Friday) and have trained a bit. They won't have any issues in playing," he said.

"I'll talk to them, and if any of them are tired then they won't play, but it seems like they haven't had any issues and the travel hasn't taken it out on them either."

Ancelotti will be without Toni Kroos (pubis) and Dani Ceballos (ankle) for the LaLiga clash, while Ferland Mendy is unlikely to feature as he recovers from a tibia problem.

Luka Modric and Nacho Fernandez will, however, be fit for the visit of the Galician side.

Forward Sergio Aguero said he has no regrets over signing for Barcelona despite the fact that close friend Lionel Messi left the club in the same transfer window.

The Argentine, who arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City, said he was happy with the decision he had made - even if it meant taking a paycut.

"No doubt I'd sign for Barca again. Just for the name of the club, many players are open to giving up money in order to come," Aguero told Spanish radio station RAC1.

"When we spoke to Barca we knew about their finances, but I told my agent that I didn't care about money - all I wanted was to sign for Barca, even if it meant not earning what I was at City.

Aguero admitted he did speak with Messi about his situation, however, he denied media reports he had a clause in his contract allowing him to walk away if his countryman left.

Sergio Aguero has no Barcelona regrets despite Lionel Messi exit

Memphis Depay scored his first goal for Barcelona to salvage a 1-1 draw away to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday in LaLiga, while defender Eric Garcia was shown a straight red card in added time for a last-ditch foul.

Athletic defender Inigo Martinez had given the hosts a deserved lead in the 50th minute by heading home from a corner after his side had dominated the first half and seen a shot cleared off the line at the start of the second.

Barca struggled to cope with Athletic's intensity but cashed in when the Basques took their foot off the gas and seemed content to defend their lead rather than look for a second goal.

Frenkie de Jong hit the crossbar with a sumptuous chip and moments later Depay levelled in the 75th minute with a thunderous strike from a tight angle, his shot flying beyond the reach of helpless Athletic keeper Julen Agirrezabala.

The Netherlands forward then could have snatched all three points for Barca when he again got down the left hand side of Athletic's area, but this time he looked to place his shot and dragged it wide of the far post.

Barca defender Gerard Pique had limped off in the first half for Ronald Koeman's side, who were playing their second game of the season after thrashing Real Sociedad 4-2 at home last week, in their first league match since Lionel Messi left for Paris St Germain.

Garcia was shown a straight red card on his second outing for Barca when he hauled down Athletic forward Nico Williams on the edge of the area, but the hosts failed to capitalise from the resulting free kick.

"We did not play a good game, we moved the ball far slower than usual and we have to improve a lot," said Barca forward Antoine Griezmann.

"They pressed us very well and caused us a lot of damage while we made a lot of sloppy passes. We have to fix this because our opponents will start to notice and will be able to see how they can hurt us."

GLORIOUS CHANCE

Barca should have taken an early lead when Depay got to the byline from the right and his low cross deflected into the path of Martin Braithwaite from close range but the Danish forward leant back and skied his shot, letting a glorious chance go to waste.

Athletic then began their period of dominance and came close to getting the opener when midfielder Oihan Sancet rattled the underside of the crossbar, while speedy forward Inaki Williams ran Barca ragged.

Williams caused the visitors more havoc in the opening minute of the second period when he got behind the defence and the ball bounced towards Alex Berenguer but Barca defender Ronald Araujo got back to clear his shot off the line.

Athletic's goal arrived soon enough though, Martinez freeing himself from his marker to glance in Iker Muniain's corner and the 10,000 fans allowed into the club's San Mames stadium erupted.

But they failed to capitalise and Depay, who joined Barca on a free transfer from Olympique Lyonnais after impressing coach Ronald Koeman from their time together with the Dutch national team, made them pay.

"We feel like we have unfinished business today, we let the three points escape," said Athletic goalscorer Martinez.

"And it was our mistake because we let them back in to the game. The players they have up front can make the difference but we deserved a little more."

Memphis Depay thunderbolt earns Barcelona point at Athletic Bilbao

FC Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has said that the other teams are playing bold as the La Liga giants are without star player Lionel Messi, who recently joined Paris St Germain&nbsp;following 21 years at the club.

After Barcelona was held 1-1 away to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday (August 21), Koeman was quizzed about the game and the absence of Messi.&nbsp;

During the match, a late strike from Memphis Depay cancelled out Inigo Martinez's header to earn Barca a point. The coach said that "opponents are always more scared when Messi is around".

"I don't like to keep talking about the same thing but we're talking about the best player in the world and opponents are always more scared when Messi is around," Koeman told reporters.

"It's also the same for us, if you give a pass to Messi, he normally doesn't lose the ball. You can feel that he is not here any more. We all know it but we can't change it."

Lionel Messi to leave Barcelona due to 'financial and structural obstacles', says club

For the second time in a month football dominated both the front and back pages of newspapers in Argentina as a shocked nation dissected the news that Lionel Messi was leaving Barcelona.

A month after the Rosario-born superstar led the national team to their first major title in 28 years, Messi was again the centre of attention as the club announced he would end his 18-year relationship with them and not sign a new playing contract.

Following Diego Maradona's death last year, Messi is the best-known face in Argentine sport and a category apart for the country's media.

Most news sites have sections dedicated to domestic leagues, the national team, rugby and other sports. Most also have one exclusively for Messi, such is the volume of news he generates.

So the unexpected news of his split with Barcelona dominated the headlines in his homeland, with some newspapers live blogging the news and updates.

Broadcaster TyC Sports had 14 Messi-related stories on their home page; the normally staid La Nacion and sports newspaper Ole had seven each.

Television and radio discussed the reasons for the split and speculated on where he might go now. Some even had correspondents reporting live from outside Barcelona’s Nou Camp stadium. Football: Disbelief in Argentina as Lionel Messi to leave Barcelona

Barcelona joined rivals Real Madrid&nbsp;on Thursday in denouncing a proposed multi-billion-dollar investment and revenue-sharing deal between Spain's top soccer league, La Liga, and private equity firm CVC.

The statement came in the aftermath of the club announcing all-time top scorer Lionel Messi would leave the Camp Nou after 18 years due to financial constraints put on them by La Liga. [L1N2PC2AX]

The Spanish football league on Wednesday announced that CVC would inject 2.7 billion euros ($3.2 billion) into La Liga in exchange for 10% of its revenue and a 10% stake in most of its business, with 90% of the injection going to clubs.

"FC Barcelona considers that the operation that has been announced has not been sufficiently discussed with the clubs (the owners of the TV rights); that the amount is not congruent with the years of duration, and the deal affects part of all clubs'&nbsp;audiovisual rights for the next 50 years," a club statement read.

"The terms of the contract that La Liga is describing condemn Barcelona’s future with regard to broadcasting rights.

"FC Barcelona wishes to express its surprise at an agreement driven by LaLiga in which the teams’ opinions, including those of FC Barcelona, have not been taken into account.

"There has not even been a presentation of options offered by other competitors in order to evaluate the pros and cons in a post-pandemic situation in which there are still many questions that are left unanswered."

Barca, along with Real and Juventus of Italy, remain wedded to the ill-fated European Super League idea that was announced earlier this year, but collapsed after fan backlash as nine of the 12 founder clubs pulled out.

The Spanish football league's Executive Committee, which includes the bosses of Atletico Madrid and Sevilla but not those of Real or Barca, approved the planned CVC deal on Wednesday and it will now be put to a vote by all league members from the top two divisions.

Football: Barcelona join Real Madrid in rejecting La Liga's proposed CVC investment

FC Barcelona fans were left reeling on Friday after the club announced that star striker Lionel Messi would be leaving the Camp Nou, where he has spent his entire professional career.

Messi, now 34, had been expected to sign a new five-year deal, but negotiations fell apart at the last hurdle on Thursday night, with the club blaming financial restrictions imposed by La Liga.

"To suddenly end like this when you thought he was already contracted again... It`s really sad, really really sad," said 36-year-old student and Barca fan Jose Rivero, standing on the street in the Catalan capital.

Messi, who joined Barcelona aged 13, is the club`s all-time top scorer, helping them claim 10 league titles, four Champions Leagues and three Club World Cups during a glittering career.

Full page photographs of the six-time Ballon d`Or winner were splashed across the front pages of Spain`s newspapers, while regional newspaper El Periodico ran with the one-word headline "Unbelievable."

"We`ve been used to having Messi for 20 years and this day was always going to arrive. Now it`s here," said Tsvetan Georgiev, 36, a carpenter in Barcelona. "We have to accept it and support him wherever he wants to go."

With debts of more than 1 billion euros, Barcelona would have needed financial restructuring to resign Messi, whose last contract in 2017, was the most lucrative in world sport, according to Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

The Argentine`s next move remains unclear, and for now he is without a club ahead of the 2021-2022 season.

He has long been linked with a move to Manchester City, where he would be reunited with his former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola or France`s Paris St Germain, which according to The Athletic, has already made overtures.

Still, some observers believe that the announcement of Messi`s departure is actually Barca boldly calling La Liga`s bluff over its FFP rules.

'Really, really sad': Lionel Messi's exit sends shockwave through Barcelona

From Zidane to Mourinho: List of top managers sacked and signed by football clubs

Carlo Ancelotti has returned to Real Madrid as head coach for a second spell on Tuesday after Zinedine Zidane resigned from the position last month. Previously, the Italian coach managed the Los Blancos side between 2013 and 2015.&nbsp;

Ancelotti left Premier League club Everton to re-join his former side (Real Madrid) on a three-year deal.&nbsp;

“While I have enjoyed being at Everton I have been presented with an unexpected opportunity which I believe is the right move for me and my family at this time,” Ancelotti said in a statement on the Everton website.

In his previous spell with Real Madrid, Ancelotti led the Spanish giants to 'La Decima', which means the 10th European Championship in 2014.&nbsp;

He has won the European Cup or Champions League on three occasions, having also led AC Milan to glory in 2003 and 2007.

"Carlo Ancelotti will be the new first team coach for the next three seasons," a brief Real Madrid statement read.

Zinedine Zidane penned down an emotional letter to fans before leaving Real.&nbsp;

He said:&nbsp;"For more than 20 years, from the first day I arrived in Madrid and wore the white shirt, you’ve shown me your love. I’ve always felt that there was something special between us. "I have now decided to leave and I want to properly explain the reasons. I’m going, but I’m not jumping overboard, nor am I tired of coaching. In May 2018 I left because after two and a half years, with so many victories and so many trophies, I felt the team needed a new approach to stay at the very highest level. Right now, things are different. I’m leaving because I feel the club no longer has the faith in me I need, nor the support to build something in the medium or long term.”

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano broke the news via Twitter and was picked by several Madrid sports dailies Marca and AS, and the radio station Cadena Ser. According to Romano, the official announcement of his departure would be made "in the next hours/days".

A few days ago, Zidane had denied the reports that suggested that he had already told his players that he would be leaving at the end of the season.

"How am I going to tell my players that I am going now? It's a lie," he said after a 1-0 win at Athletic Bilbao.&nbsp;

Zinedine Zidane resigns as Real Madrid coach- Reports

Villarreal are looking towards Europe once again. Under the guidance of Unai Emery, the club from Spain’s eastern coast have put together one of the best seasons in their history. It’s worth remembering that Villarreal only made it to Spanish football’s top division for the first time in 1998 and they have grown and grown since then, bouncing back after a couple of relegations and aspiring to improve with each season.

For a team traditionally used to third-tier football to have reached these heights is an incredible achievement, and is to a great degree down to their excellent decision-making in the transfer market. Villarreal fans have enjoyed some of the best players in Spanish recent times; here are just five of the best.

Juan Román Riquelme, the genius (2003-07)

<img alt="Riquelme" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="4d5a32d3-92f9-4763-ba21-59b0850a5de8" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/riqu.JPG" />

The last number 10, as he is known in his native Argentine, Riquelme is the player who best sums up Villarreal’s rise. He arrived at the club in 2003 after not quite fitting in to a Barcelona side that opted instead to bring in Ronaldinho (a decision which didn’t turn out all bad…). At Villarreal, the playmaker won over the fans from the very first day thanks to his incredible technical ability, leading the team to the brink of a Champions League final, even if it was his missed penalty in the 2005/06 semi-finals against Arsenal which saw them fall just short. Despite that, Riquelme’s best seasons in European football were spent at Villarreal, where he won the Intertoto Cup, the club’s only international title to date.

Diego Forlán, the first ‘killer’&nbsp;(2004-07)

One year after Riquelme arrived at the Estadio de la Cerámica, he was joined by Forlán. The Uruguayan striker made Villarreal his new home following a tough first spell in Europe with Manchester United and become their second-top LaLiga Santander scorer of all time with 54 strikes over his three seasons in yellow, even pipping Samuel Eto’o to the&nbsp;Pichichi&nbsp;trophy in 2005. He was the first of the many excellent centre-forwards Villarreal have signed in recent times.

<img alt="Forlan" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="3068c162-dcac-4fc7-8c0f-19e064ee5504" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Forlan.JPG" />

Gerard Moreno, the latest star striker (2012-15, 2018-present)

The most recent of Villarreal’s quality strikers is Gerard Moreno, a player who arrived under the radar despite the fact he had been a regular goal scorer for RCD Espanyol for many years. Gerard actually came through the ranks at Villarreal, and following his spell at Espanyol returned ‘home’ with an inconsistent first campaign which saw him net just seven goals. 18 goals last season, however, and 23 this year have clearly demonstrated his talents. Only Lionel Messi scored more goals than Gerard in LaLiga Santander this season.

<img alt="Moreno" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="6196a3ee-527a-417e-96f0-9441003cbc2c" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Moreno.JPG" />

Pau Torres, the defensive colossus (2016-present)

During Villarreal’s years at the top level, they have always been a balanced team, focusing on building a strong defence as well as dangerous attacks. After enjoying the defensive efforts of Diego Godín, Marcos Senna and Bruno Soriano over the years, they now have academy graduate Pau Torres, currently considered one of the best centre-backs in the division and someone who Europe’s top clubs would love to have. He’ll be a key player for Spain at this summer’s European Championship too.

Santi Cazorla, the most charismatic playmaker (2003-06, 2007-11, 2018-20)

It’s hard to think of a more loved player in club history than Cazorla, who spent three different stints at Villarreal. Brought in from Oviedo to the club’s youth setup when he was 19, he returned from a loan at Recreativo Huelva to become the team’s captain and one of the greatest legends ever seen at the Estadio de la Cerámica. Given his unmatchable technical ability, his untameable competitive spirit and his close relationship with the fanbase, Cazorla remains an unforgettable figure in the club’s satisfyingly successful recent history.&nbsp;
