Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has made heads turn during the ongoing Asia Cup. Currently part of the commentary panel of the continental tournament, Gambhir is in the news for showing the middle finger to a section of the crowd during the rain-abandoned India-Pakistan group stage clash, in Kandy, on Saturday (September 02). The video went viral where fans were allegedly taunting Gambhir by chanting Virat Kohli's name (with whom he had a spat during IPL 2023) before the ex-cricketer made the obscene action.

However, Gambhir has explained his actions and made a big claim. The 2011 ODI World Cup-winning member claimed that not everything is shown on social media, alleging anti-India chants from Pakistan supporters in the crowd prompted him to make the controversial gesture. Thus, his action&nbsp;had nothing to do with Kohli chants.

<h2>'I can't hear things being said about my country'</h2>

Talking to the media on Monday (September 04), during&nbsp;India's final group stage game versus Nepal in Kandy, Gambhir said, "Whatever is shown on social media, there is no truth to it. People show what they want to show on social media. What actually happened was there were anti-India slogans being chanted, I heard chants of 'Hindustan Murdabad'. There were slogans about Kashmir also. So there will obviously be a reaction, one way or the other or laugh at it. There were a couple of Pakistani people... they were shouting anti-India stuff. Obviously, it was a natural reaction. I can't hear things being said about my country."

Gambhir further asserted, "That's why that reaction came out. If you talk bad about the country, what do expect me to do? Should I smile and go away or keep quiet? I am not that kind of a person. I just want to say this, when you have come to watch a match, support your team. There's no need to give political reactions there. There is no need to bring up Kashmir there. There is no need to speak ill about India. You support your team, your country. There were Indian crowd also, they were supporting their team."

From Group B, Bangladesh are pretty much through to the next round whereas Afghanistan need a huge win over Sri Lanka -- on Tuesday (September 05) -- to topple the Islanders and advance ahead. For now, the Lankans and Bangladesh look certain to reach the top four.

India: Hundreds participate in flag march showing changed Kashmir

India is celebrating its 76th anniversary of Independence Day and security forces on the line of actual control have been put on high alert near border areas. In North Kashmir security forces have inputs that terrorists might try to sneak in from across the border to disrupt peace in Jammu and Kashmir here's a report.

India: Security forces are on high alert in Kashmir

Kashmir was always famous for places like Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, but with the opening of areas close to the line of control, a huge number of tourists are visiting and exploring these areas. Along with the beauty of these mountain ranges, tourists are excited to see a border that divides the two countries.&nbsp;

The guns have fallen silent on the Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan for over two years now. And after these peaceful years, the government of Jammu and Kashmir, along with the department of tourism, have opened many areas close to the LoC for tourists and visitors.&nbsp;

The people living on the line of control are finally living a peaceful life and are ready to welcome tourists from across the country and world. The areas close to LoC in North Kashmir include Keran, Gurez, Tangdhar, Machil and Bangus that have been added to the new list of tourist places in the valley.&nbsp;

"We have been promoting the border areas. We don’t want haphazard development; we want to maintain our ecology. It was very difficult to come to these places few years ago but after the abrogation of article 370, we are opening border areas and tourists are loving it. Tourism is the back bone of the valley and this will help in building the economy of these areas. The response has been fantastic, people are so excited," said Raja Yaqoob Farooq, Director, Tourism, Kashmir.&nbsp;

The department of tourism has prepared a plan to build infrastructure in these areas while keeping the&nbsp;environment in mind. They are also providing employment and generating economic opportunities for the local people of these areas.

“Keran is a very important tourist destination among the bordering areas open for tourists. We are trying to provide the infrastructure. You can apply for an e-pass. Within 24 hours, you get the pass to visit. The biggest gain will be for the locals. Tourism can provide employment, it can help in building infrastructure, it will boost the local economy,” said Ayushi Sudan, DC Kupwara.&nbsp;

With breathtaking views of hills and rivers, these places are being promoted as adventure tourism destinations. And what is exciting is waving at people from across the border. People from various parts of the country come to witness these visuals.&nbsp;

“I am extremely happy; I had seen this on the social media and I came to see the place with my family. It looks better than what I saw on social media. Looking at Pakistani people from so close&nbsp;is also very nice and exciting. I will tell everyone to come here. It’s without fencing border and is amazing" said Raju J, a tourist.&nbsp;

Significantly, Kashmir has witnessed record breaking tourist arrivals in the last four months. With all the major tourist destinations of the Kashmir Valley like Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg fully booked for most of the season. The government says that promoting these sites will also help in meeting the huge influx of tourists visiting the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

"When there used to be ceasefire violations, we used to run for our lives. It’s so peaceful now. Nothing happened in&nbsp;last 70 years, but in the last four&nbsp;years, things have changed drastically. Our roads are better, our water and electricity is better. I congratulate the central government and Indian army for their exemplary work. It’s a beautiful scene when people from both the countries wave at each other," said Mumtaz Khan, a local.&nbsp;

The Indian Army has played a major role in opening these areas to the public. The entire security system in these areas is under the Indian Army and they are not only protecting these areas but also promoting them as tourist destinations. The local people of the area say that without the Indian Army, it would not be possible to welcome tourists in these areas.

Our roads are better, our water and electricity is better. I congratulate the central government and Indian army for their exemplary work. It’s a beautiful scene when people from both the countries wave at each other," said Mumtaz Khan, a local. The Indian Army has played a major role in opening these areas to the public. Crafts from India’s Kashmir valley are famous across the world and to give further impetus to the industry, young artists and designers are incorporating new designs and techniques to create unique art pieces. One such artist is Shahnawaz Ahmad Sofi, who for the first time has merged the silk carpet calligraphy craft with Kashmir’s famous walnut wood art.&nbsp;

While Srinagar has been listed among the most creative cities in the world, the artisans and craftsmen from Kashmir have been innovating with the traditional arts of the valley. In Srinagar’s downtown area of Noorbagh, the artist is designing unique art products with the amalgamation of two Kashmiri crafts -&nbsp;the calligraphy silk carpets with the famous Kashmiri walnut woodwork.&nbsp;

After completing his graduation from the Institute of Music and Fine Arts, Shahnawaz started experimenting with new designs. He not only started using calligraphy for the first time but also merged the two arts together, creating unique products for markets across the world.&nbsp;

“I have been thinking about innovation from the very beginning of my career, our craft was going through a bad phase. I thought of making something unique and new. I wanted to club two crafts together and I thought of making products using Silk carpet calligraphy on top of walnut wood art. Walnut wood is extremely famous in the Valley and merged the two crafts. As you can see the products behind me, the base is walnut wood and carpet craft weaving on top of it. That is what I created, and it will help the two crafts. The weavers and artisans can benefit from this. These pieces can be used as wall decorations,” said Shahanwaz, craftsman and innovator.&nbsp;

Shahnawaz has also been training his artisans to use these new techniques. He has held workshops with artisans where they were taught how to merge the two crafts together. Shahnawaz says that by doing so, he will be helping artisans from two different arts and help save the heritage as well.&nbsp;

According to Shahnawaz, the art pieces created by him have yet not been put out in the market, but he is already getting a great response from his buyers and orders for these products are pouring in from across the world,&nbsp;especially from the middle east.&nbsp;

“The innovations will always benefit us. I am already getting a huge response for these products. It will help all of us, the weavers especially. I am getting a great response from Gulf countries. The walnut never used to go to the gulf countries but after these products are made, we are getting a lot of great response from those countries. We need to create new ideas. We have to keep modernising the crafts,” said Shahnwaz, craftsman and innovator.&nbsp;

The artist says that the main idea is to revive the various art forms in the Kashmir Valley and see the scope of amalgamating various arts with each other. &nbsp;He feels that through new designs and techniques, the younger generation will get attracted towards the art and it will help to save these crafts.&nbsp;

The Jammu and Kashmir Government for the first time, has established a digital hi-tech Command Control Centre for real-time surveillance of the Amarnath Yatra routes. This is sure to help the government manage the pilgrimage smoothly.

Amarnath Yatra is one of the toughest pilgrimages of Hindus and Jammu and Kashmir government has been working round-the-clock to make every little aspect of the yatra easy for the pilgrims. The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir had ordered setting up of the hi-tech Command Control Centre.

The Command Control Centre has around 60 people from around 20 government departments working day and night. The departments working in the Hi-tech Command Control Centre include Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, NDRF, SDRF, Health, PHE, PDD, Telecom and many others.&nbsp;

There are around 17 PTZ High Definition 360-degree view cameras placed all through the routes from base camps to the cave. Dozens of static cameras have also been placed at strategically important places from both Baltal and Chandanwari base camps.

"This integrated command control centre is a one-stop solution. We are monitoring the monitoring yatra using technology in a dynamic way. It has really helped us in making immediate decisions. For example, if there is a problem in the yatra route due to weather, we can intervene from the centre. If, God forbid, an earthquake takes place, the command centre will tell the pilgrims about the emergency number they need to call on. It will be a single-stop solution. Officials from many departments are here, be it the fire services or the army. We can take effective action in case of a disaster," said V K Bidhuri, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir.

All the pilgrims coming for the Amarnath yatra have been provided with RFID (radio frequency identification number). This helps the authorities to monitor the location of the yatris while they take the pilgrimage from their base camps.&nbsp;

The digital Hi-tech Command Control Centre will play a very important role in identifying medical emergencies, potential disaster situations, locating missing individuals, and facilitating their recovery.&nbsp;

"There are people who come in groups, and sometimes some of them get cut off. The centre can help them even if they don't know their RFID number. We can track them with their&nbsp;Aadhaar number or name and we can track their location. RFID thus would help in ensuring the security of pilgrims. Moreover, we would come to know if anyone misbehaves. The quality of the cameras is phenomenal. The cameras are also monitored by the Amarnath shrine board, police and even Lieutenant Governor. No one can escape the responsibility, said Bidhuri.

According to the government estimate, around 80,000 pilgrims have completed the Amarnath Yatra in the first six days.&nbsp;

The Kashmiri copperware craft industry has been gasping for survival. Machine-made copperware products have taken over the markets. The artisans associated with the craft are trying to keep the art alive and one such artisan, Mohammad Aslam Bhat has taken it upon himself to give a new shape to the industry so that it survives forever.&nbsp;

With new designs, techniques and the introduction of unique products, Mohammad Aslam Bhat is trying to revive the craft of copperware in the Kashmir Valley. He was recently awarded by the state government for his unique ideas and innovation in the craft. Every morning, Bhat comes to his shop in the old downtown area of Srinagar to create unique copperware products which not only the locals but tourists coming from across the world like and buy.&nbsp;

''The number of artisans is coming down with every passing day, and the main reason is the machine-made products. The artisans were finding it difficult, but I have introduced some unique ideas and products which no machine would be able to make. And by God's grace, my work is going on. I want the other artisans to also innovate. This art should never die, and we must keep working on saving the craft. The government has to help as well. It's a craft going on for centuries. Copperware was my family business and I saw the machine products taking over. I studied the market and saw what buyers are wanting and that's how I started making products which were never made like showpieces and jewellery. Due to the award, a lot of people associated with the craft got encouraged too, '' said Mohammad Aslam Bhat, copperware artisan. &nbsp;

Copperware is a must-have in every Kashmir home. Earlier it was only traditional utensils made of copper used in the Kashmiri homes and now it's the decorative pieces from vases to lamp shades to phone holders to earrings and many other accessories. The process of making these products involves many artisans, which starts with moulding the raw material into various shapes followed by hand carving these products. It takes these artisans days to make a single product by hand.&nbsp;

The demand for these handmade copperware products has increased after these new designs and innovations.

''People always want something new and unique. One of the reasons I see a lot of people coming to my store is that what I sell, they won't be able to get it anywhere in the world. That is why I want other people associated with the art to innovate so that we can save this craft industry. The tourists see these products, and no one leaves the store without buying anything. And I have made sure to keep the Kashmir tradition alive in it, I have used all the Kashmiri motifs so that when people see my products, they should know it's from Kashmir. The kids today have the internet, and they can make whatever designs they want to. I do teach kids here and there is a lot of scope for this art, '' said Mohammad Aslam Bhat, copperware artisan. &nbsp;

The Kashmir's copperware artisan's association has called for a ban on machine-made products and sought government intervention to save the centuries-old craft of the Kashmir Valley.&nbsp;

With new designs, techniques and the introduction of unique products, Mohammad Aslam Bhat is trying to revive the craft of copperware in the Kashmir Valley. He was recently awarded by the state government for his unique ideas and innovation in the craft. Every morning, Bhat comes to his shop in the old downtown area of Srinagar to create unique copperware products which not only the locals but tourists coming from across the world like and buy. ''The number of artisans is coming down with every passing day, and the main reason is the machine-made products. The artisans were finding it difficult, but I have introduced some unique ideas and products which no machine would be able to make. And by God's grace, my work is going on. I want the other artisans to also innovate. This art should never die, and we must keep working on saving the craft. The government has to help as well. It's a craft going on for centuries. Copperware was my family business and I saw the machine products taking over. I studied the market and saw what buyers are wanting and that's how I started making products which were never made like showpieces and jewellery. Due to the award, a lot of people associated with the craft got encouraged too, '' said Mohammad Aslam Bhat, copperware artisan. Copperware is a must-have in every Kashmir home. Earlier it was only traditional utensils made of copper used in the Kashmiri homes and now it's the decorative pieces from vases to lamp shades to phone holders to earrings and many other accessories. The process of making these products involves many artisans, which starts with moulding the raw material into various shapes followed by hand carving these products. It takes these artisans days to make a single product by hand. The demand for these handmade copperware products has increased after these new designs and innovations. ''People always want something new and unique. One of the reasons I see a lot of people coming to my store is that what I sell, they won't be able to get it anywhere in the world. That is why I want other people associated with the art to innovate so that we can save this craft industry. The tourists see these products, and no one leaves the store without buying anything. And I have made sure to keep the Kashmir tradition alive in it, I have used all the Kashmiri motifs so that when people see my products, they should know it's from Kashmir. The kids today have the internet, and they can make whatever designs they want to. I do teach kids here and there is a lot of scope for this art, '' said Mohammad Aslam Bhat, copperware artisan. The Kashmir's copperware artisan's association has called for a ban on machine-made products and sought government intervention to save the centuries-old craft of the Kashmir Valley.
