Upon being asked about thoughts on not picking Nair, Agarkar revealed they discussed his name during the chat, but looking at how stacked the Indian ODI middle order is, he, unfortunately, had to wait for his turn.
"Yeah, it was tough. Those are really special performances. Someone who averages 700-plus. We did have a chat," Agarkar said during the presser in Mumbai.&nbsp;

Chennai Super Kings batter (CSK) Ambati Rayudu retired from the IPL last year, leaving behind a spot to be filled ahead of this season. While many have speculated Tamil Nadu’s own Shahrukh Khan to take up that vacant place, ace India spinner Ravi Ashwin reckons CSK might go for someone else who is a like-to-like replacement for Rayudu.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin picked one name that CSK is likely&nbsp;to chase at the upcoming IPL 2024 mini-auction scheduled in Dubai on Tuesday (Dec 19), and it’s not the ‘apparent finisher’ Shahrukh Khan.

“I have a feeling that they will invest in Karun Nair. They are searching for a replacement for Ambati Rayudu. Shahrukh is not a replacement for him at No. 4. I have no idea who they are going to play in that position this season.”&nbsp;

“They might try a left-hand option, but if you look at CSK’s track record, they have never gone for an unknown commodity. They have never played anybody who just did well in their first season of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy,” Ashwin explained.&nbsp;

Without over-committing, Ashwin said, “Folks, brace yourself to see him play for the joint-most successful IPL side in history.”

“So, Karun Nair, folks, brace yourself to see him in yellow. I am not committing to anything, just doing a little Ravi Shastri impression,” Ashwin added. 
 
Explaining what makes Karun Nair a ‘perfect replacement’, Ashwin said he can bridge the gap between the top and middle order. Adding credibility besides his name, Ashwin added Nair can play spin well and has played at number four before, something MS Dhoni would like.

“He is somebody who can play spin well, could sweep and reverse sweep. MS Dhoni loves it when there is a batter who can play between the top order and the middle order in the No. 4 slot, especially in Chennai. I feel Karun Nair is perfect for that,” Ashwin expressed.

Backing Nair to break into a top IPL side with bigger responsibilities to handle, Ashwin said,&nbsp;“He has had a tough time in the last few years. It is not easy; you score a triple century in Test cricket, and all of a sudden, you find yourself nowhere. That is very difficult for any person’s mental makeup, but he has fought it out, so hats off to Karun. He did well in the KPL as well so, it all looks good for him.”

India’s only Test triple centurion other than Virender Sehwag, Karun Nair, has replaced KL Rahul at Lucknow Super Giants for the remainder of IPL 2023. Following suffering an injury against RCB on May 1st, KL had undergone scans in Mumbai and is now ruled out of this season and WTC final against Australia that begins on June 7th at the Oval in London.

Nair, who represented five franchises in IPL over the years - Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and RCB, has scored 1496 runs in 76 matches. LSG picked up Nair for INR 50 lacs.

Against RCB, Rahul tore a tendon in his right thigh while chasing the ball in the second over. He had to be taken off the field and didn’t return until LSG’s ninth wicket fell. Though he faced three balls, he didn’t score any run and couldn't rotate the strike either. After undergoing scans and consulting specialists, KL ruled himself out on precautionary grounds.

On his Instagram handle, he posted a photo saying, he’s gutted to be missing out, but it was the right call looking at the future. Rahul added his focus would remain on rehab and recovery in the coming weeks.

He further said, "As the team captain, it pains me deeply not to be able to be there during this crucial period. But, I'm confident that the boys will rise to the occasion and give their best performance as always."

Former chief selector Syed Kirmani on Monday said that the MSK Prasad-led selection panel is not experienced enough to challenge the decisions of head coach Ravi Shastri and captain Virat Kohli.

The ex-India wicketkeeper's comments come in the wake of the controversy over the exclusion of Karun Nair and Murali Vijay from the Test squad.

Both Nair and Vijay claimed that they they were not spoken to by the selectors before or after being dropped, a claim that Prasad has dismissed by stating that both the batsmen were duly informed.

When asked about the selection row, Kirmani told PTI: "If you ask me Ravi Shastri is the main selector, being the coach. He along with captain and senior members will discuss and put it (what they want) across to the selection committee.

"The current selection committee, with due respect, is inexperienced to these guys (Shastri and Kohli). And they better listen to what the team management wants because they cannot debate with Shastri and Kohli, who have much more experience," said the 68-year-old, who headed the selection panel in early 2000s.

The five-member panel is low on international playing experience with chief selector Prasad playing six Tests and 17 ODIs. The other four -- Sarandeep Singh (2 Tests, 5 ODIs), Dewang Gandhi (4 Tests, 3 ODIs), Jatin Paranjpe (4 ODIs) and Gagan Khoda (2 ODIs) -- too do not have enough experience in top-fight.

"Luck also plays a role in selection. Take my example. I was sidelined at the peak of my career," said Kirmani, who played the last of his 88 Tests in 1986, on the sidelines of the first Test against the West Indies in Rajkot.

Among India's finest wicket-keepers, Kirmani also has a lot to say about Rishabh Pant, who has broken into the Test mainly on the basis of his batting and not his glove work. The World Cup winner thinks Pant has a long way to go as he is yet to learn the basics of wicket-keeping.

"He is in the cradle of wicket-keeping. He is in the cradle of international cricket also. What is unfortunate is no coach is talking about technique anymore. The performance is what matters and MS Dhoni has proved that. The youngsters are following the likes of Dhoni from the point of batting as well as keeping.

"Having said that, basic technique is required. In batting he (Pant) can manage but in wicket-keeping you have to follow a certain technique to have a good collection and anticipation. You got to have the agility, you got to have a good vision.&nbsp;

"Unfortunately there is a trend of wearing glasses these days. When you have a good natural vision why bring a glass in front. Because of that you may lose sight of the ball and your anticipation can also go haywire. You might miss a catch or stumping."

At times, Pant stands up before the ball is bowled by a spinner, pointed out Kirmani. So, what does he need to do?

"He has to be on his toes before the bowler takes a turn, sitting crouching down. These are the basics. He has to be crouching down, he has to wait till the ball pitches and then react. After that, he has to move according to the swing, bounce.&nbsp;

"Wicketkeeper's ability is judged only when he is standing up to spinners. Anyone can keep against the pacers since you have a lot of time to move and anticipate. You have fraction of a second out there for these three-four coordinates to synchronise for a good collection in the form of stumping or a catch."

Kirmaini said Dhoni's talent is undisputed and rare but his style should not be aped by youngsters.

"If you talk about collection of the throw. He has to go right behind the stumps, not what Dhoni does (sometimes he takes it from ahead of stumps). Pant is following him. It is not technique. You have to get behind in line with the stumps, your eye level should be in line with the bails to see where the ball is pitching so that you can judge it better.

"Just by telling it is not right. It has to be shown in action. So far I have not been invited by anyone to coach a wicketkeeper or talk to him. I feel very disappointed. My experience is going waste," he lamented.

At a time when teams are opting for batsmen who can keep, Kirmani said wicket-keeping was always a specialist's job.

"Wicket-keeper has to be born which I was not aware of when I started. I spoke to Alan Knott (former England wicketkeeper) for the first time in 1971. I asked him 'why do they say a wicketkeeper has to be born? He said 'it is because right from the initial stages, you got to have a good vision, be nimble and agile'.

"How many are like that in this Indian team? Even in my time I can remember only the great Eknath Solkar."&nbsp;

KL Rahul, who is in the middle of a splendid IPL season, makes his way back while 27-year-old Punjab speedster Siddarth Kaul has been included in both, the ODI and T20I squads.

The BCCI selectors met in Bengaluru to pick six squads on Tuesday, including two T20I squads to face Ireland and England and ODI outfit to face England.

Kohli, who will skip the historic encounter as he will be playing for Surrey in the English County Championship, to prepare for the series against England, has been replaced by Karun Nair.

Barring Kohli, it will be the regular Test team that will play against Afghanistan.&nbsp;
