The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil routes, is witnessing heightened tension as reports suggest over 100 commercial vessels have been redirected amid ongoing instability linked to the Iran blockade. According to reports, the US Navy is quietly coordinating ship movements to reduce risks in the region, where navigation has become increasingly dangerous.

US Strikes Iran's Radar Sites as Trump Toughens Demands

President Donald Trump sought to change several terms of a proposal to end the US-Israel war on Iran, according to media reports in the United States, as a finalised deal remains elusive.
The New York Times reported on Saturday that Trump’s changes involved toughening the deal terms, and the US has sent the new framework back to be considered by Iran, according to officials familiar with the proceedings.

Iran & US Still Exchanging Proposals & Counterproposals To End War

Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sunday (May 31) said that Tehran will not agree to any agreement with the US that does not guarantee that the rights of Iranians are secured. In a video statement on state television, Ghalibaf said that Iranian negotiators do not trust the enemy’s words nor its promises. This comes as Tehran and Washington continue to exchange proposals for a framework to end the war in the region.“We will not approve any agreement until we are certain that the rights of the Iranian people have been upheld,” Ghalibaf said. He added Iranian negotiators “neither trust the enemy’s words nor its promises”.Earlier on Saturday (May 30), the New York Times and Axios reported that Trump had sent back the latest framework to be considered by Iran with “tougher” terms. Its details were not immediately clear.Speaking in an interview with Fox News, US President Donald Trump said, “I would rather get a deal, because we can open the Strait immediately upon signing. The one guarantee that I have is that there will be no nuclear weapons.”Iran has reportedly demanded the release of $12 billion in frozen assets before entering substantive negotiations on its nuclear programme, according to Iranian media. Tehran also rejected earlier claims by Trump that its stockpile of enriched uranium would be destroyed, calling the remarks “baseless” and insisting no such agreement had been reached.Iran has also insisted that Lebanon be included in any future agreement, even as fighting continues in the region. This comes amid accusations from Beirut that Israel is pursuing a “scorched-earth policy” through its expanded military operations against the Iran-backed Hezbollah.Meanwhile, Trump has repeatedly suggested that military options remain on the table if talks fail. “I’m in no hurry,” Trump told Fox News, adding, “If we don’t get what we want, we’re going to end in a different way.”Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. The United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve, or SPR, is shrinking fast. Since the war with Iran began, the amount of oil in America's emergency oil stockpile has dropped by about 50 million barrels.

That is a fall of 12 percent. Stocks now stand at 365 million barrels. That is the lowest level since April 2024.

Amid global turmoil in West Asia and elsewhere, Indian students pursuing higher education in the United States are now facing mounting financial pressure. A weaker rupee, geopolitical tensions and rising travel costs are increasingly making overseas education increasingly expensive for the millions of Indian students who go abroad to pursue higher education every year. For many aspiring students, the dream of an international degree remains alive, but as the rupee continues to weaken and global uncertainties deepen, financing that dream is becoming increasingly difficult.<h2>How many Indian students go abroad for higher education?</h2>According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in 2025, over 1.2 million Indian students enrolled in higher education overseas; the year before this number stood at 1.33 million. A quick look at MEA data shows that while the overall number remains high, outbound enrolments have seen a year-on-year decline. The reason for this decline: uncertainty surrounding global mobility, stricter visa rules, policy caps, and economic volatility. Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/cywyddau-who-is-shrey-parikh-indian-origin-teen-wins-america-s-biggest-spelling-competition-takes-home-50-000-prize-scripps-national-1780033420442">'Cywyddau': Who is Shrey Parikh? A new report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies has raised alarm over the state of U.S. missile stockpiles following the Iran conflict. Analysts warn that key weapons systems, including Patriot and THAAD interceptors, have been heavily depleted and could take years to fully replenish. The official also said US forces intercepted drones launched from Iran during the operation. Reuters first reported the strikes. Meanwhile, in the early hours of Thursday (May 28), three explosions were reported east of Bandar Abbas, a major Iranian port city and naval hub located near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency said the blasts occurred around 1:30 am local time and briefly triggered Bandar Abbas’ air defense systems. “The exact location and source of these sounds are still unknown, and follow-ups are continuing to determine them,” Fars reported. Bandar Abbas is considered strategically important due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. The reported strikes come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran over regional security and maritime traffic in the Gulf. Fresh US Strikes in Iran, Explosions Heard in Bandar Abbas

Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said in a written statement that the war with the United States had shown that American military bases in the Middle East are no longer safe, while the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps said it would respond forcefully to any U.S. strikes.

Iranian media on Tuesday (May 26) reported that Tehran’s negotiators were seeking the release of about $24 billion in frozen assets held abroad as part of ongoing efforts to end the war with the United States. This comes as the top Iranian delegation was in Qatar to hold talks over key issues, including the release of funds. Tehran earlier said that it was finalising a 14-point framework for a deal on ending the conflict. Despite the ongoing talks, tensions between the two countries renewed after the US military struck Iranian missile launch sites and boats near the Strait of Hormuz, saying that they acted in “self-defence”. The move drew sharp condemnation from Tehran, which accused the US of ceasefire violation and warned of retaliation.Tasnim news agency reported, citing a source close to the negotiating team, “Iran’s frozen assets are to be released during the course of the negotiations, and this amount is estimated at $24 billion in accordance with the 14-point memorandum of understanding.”It added that around half of that sum “should be made available at the start of the announcement of the memorandum.”The report came as a senior Iranian delegation arrived in Qatar for high-level talks. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati travelled to Doha on Monday (May 25) to discuss key aspects of the negotiations, including the phased release of frozen Iranian funds.According to Tasnim, Ghalibaf’s visit to Qatar was “aimed at reaching an understanding on the implementation of Iran’s demand and the method of accessing $12 billion in the first phase,” among other issues. While there is no official figure for the amount of Tehran’s frozen assets abroad, Iranian media reports have estimated the total between $100 billion and $123 billion. The issue of frozen Iranian funds has remained a major point of friction between Tehran and Washington for years. In 2023, around $6 billion in Iranian assets held in South Korean banks was transferred to Qatar as part of a prisoner exchange deal involving five American citizens detained in Iran. However, the funds were never released after relations sharply deteriorated following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which triggered the Gaza war and intensified regional tensions.Disclaimer: WION takes utmost care to accurately and responsibly report ongoing conflicts in West Asia involving Israel, Iran, the US, Gulf nations and non-state actors like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Islamic State, and others. Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, the newly appointed head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, delivered a hard-line message in his first public address, declaring that Iran would not back down in its confrontation with the United States and Israel. “There will be no retreat” in Iran’s fight against the US and Israel, Zolghadr said, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency. “The military field, the diplomatic field, and the people sent forth into the streets demonstrated this through their courageous resistance and brought the enemy to its knees,” he added.&nbsp;Zolghadr, a longtime regime insider, was appointed to lead the National Security Council in March after the death of his predecessor, Ali Larijani, who was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike. Iran’s new security chief, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, vows 'no retreat' against the US and Israel as the IRGC claims Tehran is stronger

“The military field, the diplomatic field, and the people sent forth into the streets demonstrated this through their courageous resistance and brought the enemy to its knees,” he added. Zolghadr, a longtime regime insider, was appointed to lead the National Security Council in March after the death of his predecessor, Ali Larijani, who was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike. Before taking over the role, Zolghadr served as the second-in-command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). His appointment is widely seen as a sign of the growing influence of the Revolutionary Guard within Iran’s leadership since the conflict escalated. Calling for national solidarity, Zolghadr urged Iranians to maintain ‘unity and cohesion’, saying social unity itself is another battlefield in the struggle. “A collective effort to prevent any divisive words or actions will bring beloved Iran to final victory, God willing,” he added.
